Murdaugh Murders Podcast - TSP #158 [Part One] - Debbie Barbier Tells on Herself + Why It Matters that John Monk’s Son Was Arrested for CSAM
Episode Date: July 30, 2026Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have some questions about a Spartanburg County Police report… made by none other than Debbie Barbier… When Greg Parker’s attorney Deb...orah Barbier told Spartanburg police she'd been “harassed” in a hotel lobby the morning of Mandy's contempt hearing on June 22, 2026, the department did something our team has never seen done so thoroughly for a harassment complaint made by a woman: it investigated. Multiple officers. Multiple weeks. Untold public monies. Search warrants signed by magistrate judges with no explanation of what probable cause existed — including a search of Mandy's Marriott room records and private guest information divulged over the phone. Hours of surveillance footage later, police could not locate the confrontation Barbier described, and the case is now listed as "inactive". We’re revisiting what South Carolina's harassment statute actually says, and ask why protected first amendment activities keep getting recast as crimes… and why behavior matching the statute is disregarded. Then we relook at McClatchy reporter John Monk’s coverage of Mandy's contempt proceedings through the prism of his 44 year old son’s federal indictment on child sexual abuse material charges — to which Monk Jr. has pleaded not guilty. This is Alec Murdoch.
I need police and an ambulance immediately.
Murdoch, Death in the Family Official Podcast, is here.
I'm joining Patricia Arquette, Jason Clark, and the cast to uncover all things Murdoch.
Family first.
To unravel the story piece by piece was really surprising because you don't want to believe it.

I don't know what will happen next after Deborah Barbier allegedly accused me of being involved in harassment in a police report following a very strange incident before my hearing in Spartanburg, South Carolina last month.
But what happened in this investigation was deeply concerning to me, and we need to talk about it.
My name is Mandy Matney.
This is True Sunlight, a podcast exposing crime and corruption, previously known as the Murdoch Murder's podcast.
True Sunlight is a Luna Shark production written with journalist Liz Farrell.
Well, where do I start?
Obviously, with gratitude again, because we have raised nearly $80,000 through our Secretary of State approved GoFundMe account that will go toward my legal fees.
Let's be very clear here.
This massive amount of money is sending a massive message to the state of South Carolina,
showing how many people from around the world more than 1,000,
see my contempt order as wrong and unjust.
More than 1,000 people were willing to donate their hard-earned money
for me to do everything I can to get this ruling reversed.
Stay tuned to our social media for an update on our next legal moves,
but I just want to say thank you again for making a horrible situation so much easier
by showing your support and reminding me that I'm not crazy here.
It is the system, and we must do what we can to make it better for all of us.
On that note, can I also say that I am tired of waking up to my sweet husband, David,
saying, are you ready to hear something that's really effed and going to make you super mad?
No, David, I am never ready to hear that.
Because every day since Judge Keith Kelly issued his unprecedented $176,000 judgment against me
for asking that my deposition be held in a safe place,
well, the universe just keeps telling me over and over how dangerous and frankly,
effed of a place South Carolina really is, especially for women.
And it's now become a place that I know long,
want to call home, which breaks my heart because I was enchanted by and determined to change
this place for the better. But now even the salt air makes me sick to my stomach. It smells like
corruption, and it feels like even the air isn't safe for me to breathe. The greatest American poet
of all time, Taylor Swift, once wrote, quote, They say I abandoned the ship, but I was going
down with it, my white-knuckle-dying grip, holding tight to your quiet resentment.
And now, that's exactly how I feel about South Carolina. It's a ship I must abandon if I want to
save myself. For years, I ignored the quiet resentment the establishment in this state had against me,
because your voices of support always drowned it out. It was hard to believe that I was so unsafe and so
hated and a place where I could hardly go to the grocery store without getting stopped by a
stranger who said thank you for your work. Those messages of support were the fuel that kept me
fighting in South Carolina and trying my best to try to make the justice system better for all of us.
We took a sledgehammer to the good old boy system and we let sunshine pour through its
darkest corners. We showed people from all over the world that there are two
systems of justice in South Carolina. One for people like the Murdox and apparently
Greg Roman and Greg Parker and then one for the rest of us. And we did this
through our explosive investigative reporting in our cut-throat commentary.
I should have known better. The good old boy system would not crumble so
easily without a fight. Sure, people threw bricks at us along the way. But when we
built something big with those bricks and made it all the way to the red carpet as executive
producers of a hit Hulu show. After that, the good old boy machine bucked back in a way that I
could no longer ignore and a way that I should have predicted but did not. It wasn't just the law
affair, the stolen text messages, the harassment, a judge at a standing desk, physically looming
over me and telling me over and over through his orders, words, and actions that I had fewer
rights than the good old boys in this state. It's the feeling of seeing for myself that top-to-bottom
corruption exists in South Carolina and knowing how easily I could be swallowed whole and
spit out by crooked cops, dirty attorneys, and immoral judges. It takes my breath away sometimes.
We flew too close to the sun.
We exposed powerful, terrible people on this podcast who would have likely have gotten away with their dirty deeds and despicable crimes if it wasn't for us.
And now, we're paying for it.
Which brings me to Deborah Barbier's police report that we talked about on Cup of Justice this week.
It did not surprise me that Deborah Barbier literally called the police in Spartanburg because my friend Jeff took a photo of her in a public place,
the hotel lobby at the AC Hotel in Spartanburg, where I will never stay again because they
apparently gave out my private information over the phone. But anyways, see, I'm not at all surprised
that Deborah Barbier, captain of the backyard swimsuit police, and of Greg Parker's legal team,
who literally asked Judge Kelly for Lunashark to be banned from taking photos in the courtroom
due to unflattering photos of their team, I'm not surprised that she literally called
the police because someone took a photo of her in a public area at a hotel where he had a right to be
as he was a guest. Debbie really hates her photo being taken. Hmm, I wonder why. If there's one thing
I've learned about Deborah Barbier, it is that there is no bottom to her. Literally,
ew, I've heard some things. That's all I'll say. Ew, Debbie. Ew. But Deborah Barbier calling the
police, and blaming me isn't the part that worries me the most about this AC Hotel Police Report
situation. It's that the Spartanburg Police Department investigated this claim of harassment
further than I've ever seen any police department ever do, including the Beaufort County Sheriff's
Office on my harassment claim against Jim Seidel. David, will you read exactly what Deborah
Barbier alleged in the first place to warn a multi-officer, multi-week,
investigation that included search warrants.
On scene, I spoke with the victim, Deborah Barbier, who is a lawyer in town for a trial.
Ms. Barbier stated that this incident occurred this morning at approximately 0.715 hours.
Ms. Barbier stated that when she went down to the front desk, she noticed an unknown white male
sitting in the breakfast area.
Ms. Barbier stated that the suspect then stood up and started videoing her and screaming,
quote, smile for the camera, end quote, and kept screaming her name.
Ms. Barbier stated that she did not respond and then left.
Ms. Barbier stated that the case today is against Amanda Matney and believes her to be involved in the suspect's actions.
First of all, the breakfast area at the Spartanburg AC Hotel is a good 50 feet from the front desk.
I saw Jess' video.
He was not screaming.
He was not confrontational.
He was not intimidating or threatening, in my opinion.
Although, it's funny, isn't it?
How Debbie ridiculed me on the stand for being scared for my safety.
And this.
This is what she calls the police over.
And she immediately called the police and told Judge Kelly that morning at my hearing
that she was being harassed and feared for her safety because someone took a photo of her at the hotel lobby.
Again, this is the hearing that she asked for and insisted that it would be in person.
So all of this could have been avoided and much cheaper if Judge Kelly would have just stuck to what he said
about the final hearing being virtual.
Deborah B. Barbier.
Hmm.
What does that B stand for?
Claimed that this run-in at the AC Hotel was harassment,
and she demanded a follow-up interview
with Lieutenant Kirby at Spartanburg PD a few days later.
David, will you read what Lieutenant Kirby wrote?
Quote, I spoke with Mrs. Barbier on the phone
and listened to her concerns about
this encounter with, quote, Jeff inside the AC Marriott Hotel Lobby on June 22, 26.
Mrs. Barbier also advised Jeff showed up at the courthouse where she was set to testify in court
in the Honorable Judge Kelly's courtroom. I was advised by Mrs. Barbier that she represented a co-defendant
in the Alex Murdoch case and has since been harassed and followed by members of Lunas Shark Media.
Okay, hang on, that is a lie.
We literally complimented Deborah Barbier in the early days of MMP
when she represented Corey Fleming.
To us, at the time, she was like a breath of fresh air compared to Dick and Jim.
And God, that's even hard for me to say now.
I need y'all to hear this clip from MMP episode 37.
First of all, the big difference was that Corey didn't hire a good old boy.
He hired a legitimate defense attorney named Deborah Barbier.
Unlike Elyke's defense team who managed to insult victims and the judges,
while arguing baseless claim after baseless claim,
Barbier stuck to the task at hand,
arguing that her client, Fleming, deserved bond.
We maintain this view every time we spoke about Deborah Barbier
when she was representing Ehrlich Murdoch's best friend.
Oh, and in episode 12 of True Sunlight podcast, Liz literally said, quote, we applaud Debbie Barbier for her emotional intelligence, decorum, and quiet strategy in this case.
Like, come on, this is embarrassing because God, we were so wrong about Debbie.
But this is important.
We only started criticizing her when she represented Greg Parker and only really started reporting on her in a way that she absolutely
deserved due to her revolting actions against me, a journalist, covering a legal case.
It is simply a lie to say that our fans would have been harassing her and following her
since the Murdoch days. And Debbie, girl, he was not following you that day. There are only a few
hotels in the small town of Spartanburg. We obviously picked the one closest to the courthouse. I thought
it would be safe because Team Terrible is based out of Columbia, which is only an hour and a half
away. But of course y'all had to stay at a hotel the night before my hearing. And of course,
you probably charged me for it. And of course, I can't even see what you are charging me for
because Judge Kelly issued a confidentiality order on your fees.
Deep breath, Mandy. So yeah, we all happen to stay at the same hotel and all happen to be attending the same dumb
hearing. Again, Debbie, girl, no one was following you, and to take a page out of your own playbook.
If people have been harassing you and following you for so long, why didn't you hire private
security? Why did you dare to enter a public space? Why didn't you hire security, Debbie?
Anyway, David, please keep reading from Lieutenant Kirby's report.
I requested Mrs. Barbier provide me with a background summary of the entire incident, and if
she could explain why the situation started.
I advised Mrs. Barbier that I have limited information other than a gentleman recording you
and shouting your name inside of the lobby of the A.C. Marriott Hotel and appeared at the
Spartanburg County Courthouse where you had legal matters to attend on the same day.
I received some screenshots from Mrs. Barbier with one showing her at the customer service
counter inside the AC Marriott Hotel. The other screenshots were from social media post showing
Jeff with a screen name on Instagram. Other screenshots show social media conversations mentioning
Debbie Barbier. I will upload these screenshots to Spillman once it comes back online. I also received
an email from Mrs. Barbier containing a link to Dropbox, which contained information she has shared with me.
box folder contains a folder labeled, quote, Mandy Matney, with approximately 126 screenshots,
voicemails, and email correspondence from several senders. These messages consist of screenshots
from social media pages, photos of bad business reviews on the victim's business page, and
messages. The assumed intent for these messages and screenshots is to criticize, or,
or insult Mrs. Barbier.
It appears all these messages and critiques are all prior to Mrs. Barbier
arriving in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
I attached a link to the Dropbox folder she shared,
and I also downloaded that folder,
which will be secured either in Spillman or Axon.
Okay, it's kind of funny if all of this weren't so terrifying,
that Lieutenant Kirby was basically like,
I have limited information other than a gentleman video recording you and shouting your name
inside the lobby of the AC Marriott Hotel and then appearing at the Spartanburg County Courthouse
where you had legal matters to attend to on the same day. Because literally that's all this boils down to.
Jeff was there to support Mandy, which entails having to see Debbie. And not to give her big head,
but she did make quite the impression during that first hearing where she brought up Mandy's bathing suit picture.
So this is essentially like if you were to attend a concert and the band you were seeing happened to be staying at your hotel.
And the morning of the concert, you snapped a photo of that band in the hotel lobby where you had a right to be and were having breakfast.
This would be like that.
And then you going to the concert and the band seeing you and calling the police on you because, oh my God, you showed up at the concert.
It's like that, except way worse.
It's so incredibly far from the crime of harassment, which I'm sure Debbie knows.
And then Debbie was like, oh, wait, there's more.
And she showed the police screenshots of people, including of Jeff, criticizing and insulting
her, likely for her own actions in this case.
Insults and criticism are protected by the First Amendment.
Debbie, the super lawyer who charges her clients an ungodly amount so she can live in her
$3 million mansion, should know that.
David, will you read the statutory parameters for the crime of harassment in South Carolina?
A.
Harassment in the first degree means a pattern of intentional, substantial, and unreasonable intrusion
into the private life of a targeted person that serves no legitimate purpose and causes the person
and would cause a reasonable person in his position to suffer mental or emotional distress.
Harassment in the first degree may include but is not limited to.
1. Following the targeted person as he moves from location to location.
2. Visual or physical contact that is initiated, maintained, or repeated after a person has been
provided oral or written notice that the contact is unwanted or after the victim has filed
an incident report with a law enforcement agency.
3. Surveillance of or the maintenance of a presence near the targeted persons, A, residence,
B, place of work, C, school, or D, any place regularly occupied or visited by the targeted person,
and four, vandalism and property damage. Section B. Harassment in the second degree
means a pattern of intentional, substantial, and unreasonable intrusion into the private life of a targeted
person that serves no legitimate purpose and causes the person and would cause a reasonable person
in his position to suffer mental or emotional distress.
Harassment in the second degree may include but is not limited to verbal, written,
or electronic contact that is initiated, maintained, or repeated.
C. Stalking means a pattern of words, whether verbal, written, or electronic, or a pattern of
conduct that serves no legitimate purpose and is intended to cause and does cause a targeted
person and would cause a reasonable person in the targeted person's position to fear one death
of the person or a member of his family.
Two, assault upon the person or a member of his family.
Three, bodily injury to the person or a member of his family.
Four, criminal sexual contact on the person or a member of his family.
David is David here with an aside.
It seems like this statute does not include
any hers. Perhaps I should file the next police report to be taken more seriously, because as
Justine Vanderlune points out, men are apparently the only gender or sex who can possess
reasonable fear. Okay, so none of that describes what Debbie even alleged here, which we'll get to
in a minute. It sure does, however, seem to describe what has been happening to Mandy for the past
eight months. Remember when a former FBI agent hired by Mark and Debbie said on the stand that he
himself had to confirm exactly where Mandy lived? Remember the repeated pattern of disturbing posts
from Jim Seidel fixating on Mandy's every move? Remember when he apparently waited for Mandy
and me in the parking lot outside of a hearing? Remember when he posted a photo of himself
in Savannah blocks away from where Mandy was before she posted her location?
Remember when the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office told Mandy there was nothing they could do about it?
Because we do.
From what this police report said, Debbie didn't prove a pattern of harassment.
She literally just gave the police a whole folder of quote-unquote evidence of people criticizing her for her actions prior to this photo slash video being taken, which isn't a crime.
But she wants to make it one, right?
She wants people to be terrified to ever say her name on the internet because the internet, unlike the internet, unlike the.
Jessie Judiciary is the only place that holds her to account and exposes her for who she is and what
she does to people like Mandy and what she does to women. There was no requirement for Mark or
Debbie to pursue contempt charges against Mandy to the extent that they did, especially after she
gave her deposition. So in a way, Debbie has inserted herself in this incredibly public case and
willingly played the role of the villain attorney for her master, Greg Parker. If she wants a private
life, she should stick to less headline-grabbing cases that tend to piss the whole internet off.
But wait, the police report somehow gets worse.
More on that after a quick break.
The justice system can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be.
We all want a drink from the same cup of justice, and it starts with learning about our legal system.

Now, getting back to the part of this Marriott-A.C. Hotel incident that really freaks us out.
The fact that the investigation kept ongoing. David, will you read the next part of Officer Kirby's report?
On 62926, as of this date, I have not received a case summary or brief from Mrs. Barbier.
On 629, 2026, I secured a search warrant to obtain video and documents from the AC Marriott.
Judge F. Adams issued the search warrant.
On 7126, I accompanied Sergeant J. Powell to the AC Marriot to obtain the requested footage and documents.
Sergeant Powell recovered a USB thumb drive and several pages of documentation.
We responded back to the police department and upon inspecting the U.S. thumb drive,
it only contained a single video of the customer service counter.
Deputy Report for Incident C2606-0527.
We responded back to the A.C. Marriott and ultimately had to request their IT department to
download the video and place it on an external drive.
I reviewed the videos provided, which consisted of approximately 530-second videos,
and was unable to locate the confrontation Mrs. Barbier advised.
I will upload that folder into Axon Evidence.
So Debbie didn't do her homework, and the police still went out of their way
to get a search warrant from a magistrate judge, who was,
been on the bench since I was literally a toddler. That judge, Judge F. Adams, approved it without an
actual crime being articulated, from what we see. And then, Lieutenant Kirby searched through four
hours of camera footage and could not find anything that matched Debbie's account she advised.
And again, what is the crime that they are even investigating? But they kept going? After that,
David, will you read Sergeant Powell, a different officer's report written after Debbie didn't do her homework.
On July 1, 26, I, Sergeant Powell, met with AC Hotel Marriott General Manager Joe Dunnan.
During this meeting, I presented Mr. Dunnin with a search warrant provided by Lieutenant Kirby,
which had been signed by a Spartanburg County magistrate judge, see copy scanned into the case file.
The search warrant requested any video surveillance recordings related to the incident that occurred in the lobby of the AC Hotel on June 22, 26, between 0600 and 100 hours.
The warrant also requested any room rental records from the AC Hotel on or about June 21, 26, under the names Mandy Matney, Amanda Matney.
Mr. Dunnan provided me with a thumb drive that was represented.
to contain the requested video surveillance and room rental documentation.
See scanned documents in the case file.
Upon review, it was determined that the thumb drive did not contain surveillance footage
covering the entire lobby area.
Mr. Dunn subsequently arranged for a member of the hotel's IT department to assist with
locating and downloading the requested video footage.
I completed the search warrant return on July 2, 26.
at the Spartanburg County Courthouse.
Hang on, they got another search warrant for my room booking records.
After they searched through videos and failed to find the incident that Deborah B. Barbier described,
and after, she sent a bunch of social media screenshots that apparently showed that people were angry
with her for the way that she has treated me in all of this.
And then the Spartanburg Police Department continued to investigate this,
and got a warrant for my room records?
And notice how they phrased the fact
that they never found the incident that Debbie described.
Was this an error in the cameras?
Or did Debbie misrepresent what actually happened to police
in order to accomplish what I think is her big game goal, defaming me?
And it is infuriating,
because how many times did Micah Francis report legitimate harassment
to the Myrtle Beach and ORI County Police Departments.
Too many times.
And every single time, they said that there was nothing that they could do.
Remember, when her tires were slashed?
And they told her it was a freaking civil matter.
Then there's the flip side to that.
Deborah B. Barbier, a former U.S. attorney.
She gets her photo taken in a public place before a very public court hearing.
and she gets the Spartanburg police to spend weeks investigating that incident with multiple officers and multiple warrants signed by judges.
We asked the Spartanburg Police Department for the status on the report and they said inactive,
which I guess it's good that they are no longer spending time on it,
but also concerning they never reached out to me or to Jeff to get information on the incident.
Or maybe to ask Jeff if I ever told him to do anything.
anything to make Debbie feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
And that answer would be no.
This was a police report designed, like so many of Mebby's filings,
I believe, to further defame me and discredit me and scare me into silence.
The truth is that it did scare me, but I won't and can't be silent about it,
because I still believe that there is safety in the sunlight.
back to the part where Debbie immediately went to Judge Kelly the morning of Mandy's hearing on June 22nd.
And based on my opinion and based on this police report and based on everything I've seen with my own eyes and heard with my own ears on Jeff's video, which police never asked for, by the way.
It's like I said on a couple of justice. Mark and Debbie take any tiny scrap of truth they can just so they can twist it and remold it for their advantage.
just so they can turn it into something else altogether,
which I'm sure is a great strategy
when you defend otherwise indefensible actions,
including your own.
Okay, so according to the police report,
it took some doing to get video of the lobby,
the place where Debbie says the harassment occurred.
And obviously the mission to get the video
ended in finding no evidence of what she says occurred.
Surely after this so-called incident
that Debbie has used to depict man,
and our listeners as bad actors, Mark Tinsley subpoenaed for the hotel surveillance footage and
the body-worn camera footage, and Debbie and Coe filed a motion to block the subpoena.
In court on July 7, Parker attorney Rhett Reicherd argued that these subpoenas had nothing to do
with the case at hand. Not only did Judge Kelly agree with that, he seemed to scold Mark
Tinsley and vaguely hint at filing a complaint against Mark's law license for discovery abuse.
It was surreal, y'all.
Judge Kelly barely gave Mark the opportunity to explain how these two things are connected to the case.
For years now, and especially in the past eight months, Parker's attorneys have sought to make our names, and most especially Mandy's, synonymous with Mark Tinsley's name.
They want Judge Kelly to regard Mark as in cahoots with us, as if anything we've been doing in this case hasn't been above board and part of the normal reporting process.
assess. They claim that Mandy and Mark were working together in 2020. They weren't, nor have they ever. And
they want the judge to look at that and say, well, this is a mess. And if Mark and Mandy were working
together and Greg and Greg were working together, well, that's the same thing. And it's so is not.
So Mark Tinsley subpoenaed for that footage because Debbie's credibility matters here. Debbie can't
over and over and over mislead the judge into three.
thinking that Mark Tinsley was in some sort of arrangement with us.
Again, he wasn't and never will be, because that is not how this is supposed to work,
and it's not how it can work.
She's done all that without being challenged on the likelihood of her claims.
It would be pretty hard to keep claiming that Mandy's this ringleader of harassment
when the harassment Debbie's claiming happened didn't happen.
And like Mandy said, it's just rich that we're even having to discuss this in the context
of the contempt case and what Parker's attorneys turned it into beyond a big old billing fest.
Beth and I got into it this week with a male content creator known for taking on cases involving
women and abuse. He is known for crying into the camera about the women, most of whom were killed,
and he just gives, in our opinion, grifter vibes. We might be wrong, but that's just our opinion.
On Monday, our former boss, Will Folks at Fitz News, posted a screenshot on Twitter showing that Mandy registered the GoFundMe fundraiser for her legal defense with the South Carolina Secretary of State's office, per the rules.
The screenshot he posted needlessly included Mandy's home address.
I say needlessly because Will could have blurted out.
Should have blurted out, but he didn't.
He also commented that this Mandy thing, as he referred to, he referred to,
to it keeps getting weirder. What's weird about that will? That Mandy follows the rules?
Or that our listeners believe in the work we're doing and suggested a GoFundMe for her legal fund?
Or that our listeners have showed up the way they have, helping in every way they can.
Is that the weird part? Or are you the weird one? Anyway, the mail creator commented that
Mandy putting her home address down on the registration form, quote on
unquote, proves, and that's the word used, that she does not fear for her safety.
Imagine going to this intellectually dishonest place. To do what? To judge Mandy, to judge whether a woman
has a right to be worried or scared in her own context. When a strange man with a criminal
record and a ceaseless fixation on Mandy makes it his career, and I'm not being hyperbolic there,
to post about her and write about her and spread lies about her.
When this strange man with a criminal record boasts about working with Parker's attorneys
and brokering a $9,000 sale for our private work product text messages,
of which neither he nor the seller were a party to,
when this strange man literally demonstrates he knows where and when Mandy's deposition is going to be held
and threatens to show up at it.
But sure, filling out a required document that's specifically,
specifically request her physical home address proves that she's not scared.
Okay.
When we challenge this male content creator publicly on his thinking,
he called Mandy and David idiots for not using a fake address that you can apparently buy online.
Uh, what?
Anyway, I bring this up because watch the silence and nothingness that happens when people like this male creator.
Find out that Debbie Barbier, a former assistant U.S. attorney, made specific claims of ongoing
harassment that occurred on camera, and yet the camera doesn't show that.
What are the male content creator and his brethren going to say about the police
determining that the 125 separate pieces of evidence that Debbie provided them to show
that this harassment has been ongoing since her days of representing Corey Fleming?
don't show anything but insults and criticism.
Are they going to ask us for Jeff's video and call it out?
L-O-L. We all know the answer to that one.
Mandy's not allowed to fear for her safety
when a creep-leg Jim Seidel is partnering up with highly aggressive
and adversarial attorneys who are deposing her in service of a lie
that they've embraced about her professional relationship with Mark Tinsley.
But Debbie Barbier is allowed to accuse Mandy and our friend,
Jeff of a crime and involve the judge and the police. And when the evidence comes in and literally
does not show what she said happened, who cares, right? It is so beyond frustrating. Now, I've thought
long and hard about doing this and I'm still not sure how I feel about it because as a journalist,
I really value my ability to have free conversations with sources. Without them ever worrying,
I'll use it against them. It's been over four years now and there have been just so many lies at this
point publicly that I feel like I have to do this.
So remember how Debbie told police that our fans have been harassing her since her Murdoch
days, insinuating that this is who we are, that this is because of us, people who encourage
harassment.
David, will you read the text message Debbie sent me on March 17, 2022?
Hi, Liz.
I want to apologize for not being able to respond yesterday.
It's been a crazy busy week to say the least.
I will do better next time.
Also, thank you for the kind words tweeted today.
This is a tough profession, and it's nice to receive compliments.
Now and then, hope to talk soon.
David and Grace, will you read this section in my deposition when Mark Moore tried to depict me as not reaching out to Greg Parker for comment?
David will read as Mark Moore, and Grace, will you read as me?
So, Miss Farrell, exhibit B.
Number seven is called. It's from a publication called Ethics and Journalism. Are you familiar with it?
Yeah.
Okay. Have you, I take it, you were familiar with it before you walked into the room today. Is that right?
Yes, sir.
Okay, all right. And it talks about best practices. The no surprises rule. A fair and full opportunity to respond.
and it says, quote,
an opportunity to respond means that a reporter or a journalist should reach out to a subject
before an article is published to give the subject an opportunity to hear and comment on what's being said about them in the article,
a chance to answer questions and offer additional information or to inform the reporter's work.
Is that context right?
Yes.
Okay. Do you do that, Ms. Farrell?
Oh, sometimes. Yeah, I do.
Okay, so you choose when and when you don't do it. Is that right?
Yes, I do.
Okay, all right. And if, if, for example, you've decided that you don't like a person or their position, you're not going to reach out to them, is that right or wrong?
That is inaccurate.
Okay, well, why don't you tell me how, how, when you decide to reach out to people or not?
I've told you already
If I'm going to get a lie back
Or if I think the source is not going to be honest with me
I have no use for them
And not to bring Mrs. Barbier
Am I pronouncing that correctly?
Barbier, Barbier.
Barbier.
Again, we're...
Well, let me just say something.
I think she can speak for me reaching out for comment
So I've reached out to her for comment in the past
So not about this case, but about another one.
Okay, just to explain something there.
I was struggling with whether to reveal a source.
Debbie on the record during that deposition. And so I kind of hedged in case I was misremembering,
which cases she and I had spoken about. David, will you read from our notes on the July 6th hearing?
And I apologize to everyone that this isn't necessarily verbatim what Mark Moore said about me,
but we were unable to record the hearing. So this is from what I scribbled down.
We asked Ms. Farrell whether she conducts the subjects of her articles for comment before they're published,
as is recommended by the journalist's code of ethos.
She admitted that she chooses when she will and when she won't do that.
Now will you read the part where Mark Moore was fake outraged
over how journalists very occasionally get court filings.
Again, these are from our notes, so it's not verbatim,
but the sentiment is true to fact.
Mr. Tinsley has given them court filings,
And I haven't seen anything like this before in my career, Your Honor, by going on their show and called Ms. Farrell and Ms. Matney to share information and reporting, and given them documents he just filed before they hit the docket so they can report on it faster than their competition.
Thank you. Now, with David as Debbie and Grace as me, will you two read these text messages from March 21, 2022?
Hi, Mrs. Barbier. I'm so sorry to bother you. I'm going to be posting a story on what transpired last week in B2B Parker at Al Case. I'm reading the defendant's supplemental brief now. I know you're busy, so I won't put, quote, did not respond to comment, end quote. If there's anything you'd like to say now or add when you can, I'm happy to include that even after it's posted. Thanks, Liz.
Hi, Liz, because the motion is still pending before the court, I generally don't comment.
If there are any pleadings you want to see, even though I am in trial, I can get someone to send it to you.
Let me know. Thank you.
No problem. I think I have everything that was filed as a Friday.
Everything that is in public index, that is.
Mr. Tinsley has filed a reply to the supplemental brief.
I think that's the last thing filed.
Oh, you know, Debbie, just telling me she doesn't judge.
generally comment on ongoing litigation, but she's willing to give me documents.
Honestly, that's all I have left in me to say about this today.
I am so sick of my own optimism in hoping that the lies will stop, that the court will step in
in the right way, that they'll leave us all alone and let us do our jobs without mischaracterizing
every single thing that involves us. Every single thing that comes out of our mouths gets
chopped up and repurposed and presented to an unquestioning judge who seems to have already made up his
mind on matters. Mandy, how can people help us here? First, please don't ever harass or threaten
or follow anyone. We have learned the hard way that Team Parker will absolutely take any shred
of anything resembling harassment and literally call the police on me. I don't need that right now.
What I need is for y'all to keep showing up for me, to keep sharing my story and the GoFundMe,
which again serves as a reminder to the South Carolina justice system,
just how many people are tired of injustice in our state.
Keep correcting the false narrative being pushed about what happened with my deposition,
the deposition that I sat for twice.
We are still building a strategic legal team for my next steps,
and I would greatly appreciate the help of anyone with legal experience
or strategic PR experience who could advise us through this tough time.
We have an army and we see you and we appreciate you.
Because of you, we will keep fighting through the darkness until sunlight prevails.
And we will be right back.
Now it's time to talk some more about journalists and ethics.
More specifically, let's talk about John Monk from the state newspaper,
the main paper of record for South Carolina next to the Posting Courier out of Charleston.
I'm going to be up front with y'all.
I have never had any particular regard for John Monk as a reporter, one way or the other.
For nearly 20 years, we were colleagues, and I am pretty sure he had no idea.
And frankly, I only knew him by name.
I can take off the names of reporters in South Carolina who worked for McClatchie,
who made a difference with their reporting, and his name was,
on that list. He was a reporter and had been at the paper for a long time. He covered crime and courts
and politics. And I barely remember people talking about him at the packet. In 2019, Mandy and I
had multiple run-ins with John Monk, though, through our editor at the time because John, based in
Columbia, seemed to have decided on his own behalf that the Beaver County Bow crash, which involved
the grandson of a certain former 14th Circuit solicitor, as well as well.
as teens from a neighboring county was automatically his story, despite the crash occurring in the
coverage area of another McClatchy paper, the island packet, where Mandy and I worked.
The packet was small, but it was known for punching outside its weight class.
Mandy and I were told by our editor, who was also John's editor, that this was the packet's story
and that John had been told to knock it off. And it's weird because I didn't even get to the
this feeling that John was scooping us or trying to compete with us. He just didn't consider us.
It was cluelessness and arrogance more than animosity, I think. The Island Packet couldn't
possibly have reporters capable of covering such a thorny story. Despite being told to back off and after
several weeks of our reporters at the packet dominating the boat crash headlines, John tried to
sneak another one past everyone. Mandy and I discovered it in the system,
while we were covering the Heritage PGA Tour golf tournament.
Not only was it a story that a packet reporter had already reported on,
it contains several errors of fact, which, you know,
I pointed out to our editor,
and I'm sure that contributed to our editor's feelings of annoyance with Mandy and me.
John could disregard his directive and not have it get addressed,
but when we pointed it out and asked for clarity to avoid confusion,
then we were the bad guys.
I think that's a story that many, many, many women can relate to in the workplace.
Because what was this guy's problem?
Anyway, in 2022, when I was walking to my car after a hearing at the federal courthouse in Charleston,
John approached me on the street by staring at me.
And for those of you who don't know, John has the appearance of a shopkeeper in Diagon Alley.
He stared at me and asked, who are you?
No niceties.
Just who are you? I said Liz Farrell and he said, who are you with? I said Fitznews and he said,
oh, okay. And that was it, at least according to my aging memory. I'm certain though I remember this
part correctly. It was strange, especially because John didn't look like the last photo I'd seen of him
and the way he was walking around the courtroom like he worked there. I had assumed that he was a
part-time janitor or some sort of retired civic volunteer at the courthouse. I'm not even saying that
to be mean or make a joke. I literally thought that's what he was doing. Later, when we were all covering
the Russell Lafitte hearing, I was talking in the reporter's room about some part of the case or other,
and a reporter with ABC 4 News named Drew Tripp asked me how I knew what I was talking about. And I pulled up
the public record on my laptop, and he was standing over my desk and reading it. And I was,
It was either something we had paid for through Pacer or got through FOIA or a source, I can't
remember. Out of professional courtesy, though, I offered to just send it to him. As he was giving me his
contact info, John Monk walked right up to my laptop with his notebook and leaned down as if he'd been
invited there. He was not part of the conversation that led to this exchange. He didn't say hi or how
are you or do you mind? He just dipped right in. And I know men out there who would be like,
that's right, John, go get them. Push your way in there. Women aren't supposed to be reporters.
So she must be a helpful secretary. That said, this is how my impression of John was formed.
That in his clear slant, or is it habit, or a professional investment for future tips,
or just man-to-man generosity of reporting his fact.
things attorneys tell him even after the attorney's credibility has been tested and proven
non-existent. Here's why we're in the predicament we're in now. Because we do the math on public
filings and we're not afraid of changing our position when the math changes. Look at our stance
on Becky Hill. At first, we thought it was all just this manufactured outrage on the part of Dick and Jim
and Joe McCullough, that they were using Becky and her naivete to bolster their own plan B
for Elek Murdoch's murder redo.
But as we learned more and reported those facts,
we learned that Becky is, in fact, a hot mess.
She's a liar, and her lack of professionalism and desire for popularity and relevance
gave Team Murdoch the inn that they needed with the Supreme Court.
We didn't hide that.
We didn't write around it.
We reported the facts of it and compared what we learned to everything else we knew to be true.
We weren't buddy-buddy with Becky Hill as our comrade.
colleagues have allowed the trolls to claim despite knowing that they were the ones cuddling up to her and even committing alleged crimes with her.
Ugh.
I know it sounds like I'm whining sometimes, or at least I feel like I'm whining, but then I remember that this is me, gaslighting myself, because I was trained by the dark lords of society to do that from the time I was born.
Women calling out inconsistencies or patterns or injustices or bad faith acting or even just narrating the damning facts aloud are often cast in the worst light possible.
Attacked for even bringing it up?
Vilified?
Burned at the stake.
Yeld at physically harmed, killed, pushed out of positions, fired.
All while more laws get made.
to protect the bad guys.
It's one thing to joke about the patriarchy
and the good old boys.
It's another thing to experience
the daily beating of it so publicly.
Anyway, John Fing monk,
just to quote Mandy in her book.
It got worse, y'all.
And more personal.
For one, and to be clear,
we don't care about this,
but it does say something about who he is.
Mandy is the only major player
in the Murdoch case
whose book he never wrote about.
He repeatedly refers to us as podcasters
and self-described journalists,
despite knowing our backgrounds,
credentials, and accolades as journalists,
and our literal reporter bios still being live
on McClatchy's website
that describe us both as journalists.
Again, we do not care,
but it's a pointed decision on his part.
It was clear what he thought of us,
which, again, no skin offers.
knows us, we find him to be a problematic journalist too. And we've not been shy about saying that.
But still, still, it was shocking when he started covering the contempt hearings in April and didn't
even pretend in the usual way he pretends, in our opinions, to be objective. His reporting was
obtuse, ill-informed, and wholly misleading, to the point where hundreds of people called out
his sloppy, inaccurate reporting that reeked of jealousy in the comments on Facebook.
As so many people wrote on the Island Packett's Facebook page, his writing felt retaliatory.
Literally, you could have switched his byline for mebbe and no one would have blinked an eye.
One of the more egregious things he reported on, though, was that I had expressed fear
for my safety and brought a security guard with me to my first hearing, and he, John
Monk, Mr. Security Expert, didn't see any threats in the empty courtroom. It's astounding how
intentionally stupid and cruel men like John Monk, or should we call him, junk actually are. But even
worse than that, if you can imagine it, after my unprecedented $176,000 contempt ruling,
John Monk wrote a scathing, inaccurate article about my proceedings that directly hit my credibility,
which I not only take seriously, I have to take seriously.
It's like a swimmer doing lapse.
Without credibility, I am nothing.
John, or Junk, specifically wrote that I admitted on the stand to making things up for content on my podcast.
Because he was ignoring the truth of what I said.
Eric Bland has said this so many times.
Attorneys argue the facts.
When the facts aren't on their side, they pound the law.
And when neither the facts nor the law are on their side, they pound the table.
I characterized Debbie's position as banging her fist on the table on a cup of justice episode.
And of course, Debbie pounded me with questions.
Like, there's a video of the hearing.
Did I bang my fist on the table?
I said, it's an expression.
and explained from the stand the meaning behind what I said,
which she obviously knows.
She knew it was metaphorical.
But John Monk, who's covered courts for literally 40 years,
apparently closed his ears to my answer
and reported what Debbie claimed as fact
that Mandy Matney admits to lying about Deborah Barbier.
When, in reality, John, you're the only liar in this equation.
You lied when you said,
I admitted to making things up for my podcast.
I never make things up for my podcast.
I never make things up for my journalism.
Because one, I would never do that, and two, I don't have to.
Look around, John.
South Carolina is so backwoods, so incestuous, and so corrupt to the core, that the truth is always
more fascinating than fiction ever could be.
Like this week, for example.
We learned in a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office that John Monk's son, Jonathan Andrew Monk,
was hit with a nine-count federal criminal indictment for attempted production, distribution,
and possession of child sexual abuse material.
Yeah, let me say that again.
John Monk, the man who has covered South Carolina courts for literally 40 years,
and has consistently, in our opinion, written in fact,
favor of defense attorneys under the mask of being an unbiased reporter, that man's 44-year-old son
is now an accused pedophile. I just need to pause for a second because, oh my gosh, Liz, please help me.
Jonathan Andrew Monk was a drama teacher at Heathwood Hall, a private religious school in
Columbia, South Carolina. According to his Instagram page, he appeared to be around children.
a lot, both from his work as a teacher and his involvement with theater. He was a member of the
Trust Us Theater Group in Columbia, and yikes, that is not a good name for this situation.
What Jonathan Andrew Monk is accused of is horrific, and our hearts go out to the two minor victims
and their families in this case. According to the indictment, Jonathan Monk is accused of,
quote, knowingly attempting to employ, use, persuade, induce, and,
entice and coerced two minors ages 16 and 15 to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose
of producing a visual depiction of such conduct and the visual depiction was produced using
materials that have been mailed, shipped, and transported in and affecting interstate and
foreign commerce by any means on or about November 29, 2024.
Monk, whose Instagram handle is Secret Monk, is accused of using kick screen names,
Rizzler Twizzler, blobby John with three ends, 19, gliz, gliz, supergliz, 18,
and Scubody 1777 to distribute the child sexual abuse material in August, October, and November of 2025,
according to the indictment.
He faces a minimum of 15 years in federal prison and a maximum of 30 years.
He has pleaded not guilty, and he has been appointed a public defender as of now,
that public defender's name is Taylor Davis Gilliam. In South Carolina, it is well known that the recipients
of target letters in federal criminal investigations often engage former federal prosecutors to mitigate
whatever might be coming their way. I'm not saying it always works in the target's favor,
though in both Mandy's and my experience, we have seen federal investigations disappear after a target
letter has been sent and the target engages former U.S. attorneys before an indictment can come
down. And we're not saying it's necessarily a bad thing. The feds aren't perfect, man. They get things
wrong and if you can afford to hire someone with influence in the U.S. Attorney's Office or if you're
friends with someone who's willing to help you as a favor who has influence in the U.S. Attorney's
Office and you know you're being wrongfully targeted or can help them with their investigation,
I mean, sure, do it. I'm also not saying that this is what is happening here. But you're
G.D. Wright, I'm going to ask the question. I mean, listen, I'm under no illusions.
John Monk does not like me or respect me or Liz, but even knowing that, and even knowing his
history of getting in his little jabs at us whenever he can, even in consideration of that,
John's coverage of the past few months of the Lawfare launched against me, the bizarre proceedings
with Mark Moore, Deborah Barbier, again, two very influential former federal prosecutors
now practicing criminal defense law, which reminds us to talk about our thoughts on why
Greg Parker chose to hire criminal defense attorneys to defend him in a civil suit.
Well, that has been over the top, slanted, obtuse, misleading, dishonest, and again,
almost word for word, out of the mouths of Mebby's.
In a nutshell, defamatory and maliciously so.
Every single story he wrote about my contempt hearing left me baffled.
I kept asking why this man would so blatantly twist the truth in a way that was really obvious to most McClatchy readers,
according to the angry comment sections under each of his articles about me.
Why was he apparently trying so hard to twist the truth?
to impress MEB. On crime analysts this week, I spoke with Laura Richards about how it's well
known among criminals in South Carolina that if you get charged with a federal crime, your
chances of getting a reduced sentence tend to increase dramatically when you hire a former
federal prosecutor. Like Jim Seidel hired a former federal prosecutor when he was caught misusing
nearly $200,000 from a PPP loan, aka your tax dollars, and spent that money on crypto and a new
house for himself. Seidel's attorney in that case apparently worked with Mark Moore and Deborah Barbier
at, of course, the U.S. Attorney's Office back in the day. Interesting, right? And we'll be right back.
The thing is, we're driven by connecting dots, not making assumptions about people we don't like or
We base our coverage on court filings, timelines, receipts, interviews with experts we trust,
observation, and we connect the dots. And then we do it again from the very beginning every time
there's a new development to see if what we've reported on, if the dots we've connected,
based on the evidence and what we're seeing, still stands. We approach our work fanatically,
and like investigators would. Sunlight changes through the hours, days and years,
and things tend to look different
than more you know.
That said, John Monk's stories
about the contempt hearing
were either the result of extreme confusion and laziness
or an inability to maintain objectivity
as he's so well known for being objective,
or a very deep bow at the waist
at the throne of Mark Moore and Debbie Barbier.
The question has to be asked.
When did John Monk know his son was the target
of a federal investigation
and was it before he continued to
the highly unusual, overly aggressive and diabolically tactical contempt hearings involving
two former U.S. attorneys. That answer matters because there is a potential conflict of interest
there, in our opinions. David reached out to John Monk on Tuesday night for comment, sending
John the U.S. attorney's offices press release, but first I want to talk about John reaching out
to David for comment from Mandy on July 10th. In the text that John sent David, he tells him that he's
texting him because he doesn't have Mandy's number to contact her directly, which is interesting
because John had reached out to David in the past for comment from Mandy. David, will you read
your response to his request for comments? You don't have her phone number because Debbie B. Barbier
posted her phone number on the public index maliciously, and Mandy has been harassed ever since,
requiring her to get a new phone number.
She's been harassed incessantly and terrified by a felon and his cronies,
which you've refused to recognize.
Is it because she's a woman?
That's why you don't believe her.
In fact, we consider your reporting choices an extension of that harassment
as you validate this onslaught of lawfare against the First Amendment,
journalism and women's right to feel safe in their surroundings.
You should be ashamed of yourself and be better at journalism.
And this is why we love David.
Stand by your woman.
But John didn't include that as a comment.
Even though he routinely, like I said, reached out to David to get comments from Mandy in the past.
Instead, he wrote in the story that the state had reached out for comment and got now
response, which as you can hear is not true. So given John's lack of interest in hearing what any of us
have to say, when David requested comment from John on this story about his son, David simply copy and
pasted an April 30th response that John had texted to David in his search for comment about
the contempt hearings at the time. David, will you read that? This is a breaking news story,
and we are publishing shortly.
However, since we are publishing digitally, we can very likely include a response in the story
when you send it.
Text me to let me know you've sent it.
Obviously, we changed the word story to podcasters, just so John wouldn't get confused
and understand that this was a request from the podcasters.
And the response we got to our request for comment regarding his son's indictment and
arrest was, thanks, we'll let you know.
Credit to John for promptly responding, by the way.
But that's all we've gotten so far from him.
Now, are the sins of the son, the sins of the father?
Absolutely not.
I am sure this is heartbreaking and devastating for the entire monk family.
But I'm not here for hugs or flowers right now.
It's hard for me to muster any sympathy,
knowing how John's words have contributed to this notion
that I had no right at all to fear that Jim's side.
would appear at my deposition, which he was threatening to appear at. I'm here looking like a
character in doom, covered in dust and sweat and unable to breathe in this atmosphere. Like I said,
it's important to know what the state newspaper knew about Jonathan being a target of a federal
criminal investigation and when they knew it, and what John Monk himself knew and when he knew it,
because he was covering my hearings with Mebby at the helm.
And I have to ask this.
Was he doing it in the way that he did because he needed their help?
Again, we are not saying that this happened,
but we have a responsibility to ask the question.
Reporters have influence.
You know this,
especially the ones who look like the people
they had been reporting on for half of a century.
I don't ever want to take pleasure in another human's pain,
and I really hate that this is happening for the students and the faculty at the school that Jonathan worked at,
and I hate that this allegedly happened to the victims.
Sorry, the alleged victims, who were 15 and 16,
the ones we know of anyway, because remember,
the trading and distribution of CSAM materials repeatedly re-victimizes the children in these types of images.
Those alleged victims aren't allowed to be wholly believed by reporters like me who know how hard this system is on them going forward.
I'm not allowed to wholly believe them until they are dragged through this court system and their alleged abuser is either found guilty or pleads guilty.
So yeah, Jonathan Andrew Monk is innocent until proven guilty.
And I'm sure this was probably one of the worst days of John Monk's life.
But forgive me for my coldness, because I know how the trolls and my colleagues who worship at John's
altar will criticize me. But over the past two days, I've sat and watched my colleagues in the
press either completely ignore that Jonathan is a son of longtime crime and courts reporter
for the state newspaper or elect to not reference John Monk by name at all. John Monk gets an
anonymous reference to his career at the end of the story. And if this were my son, y'all know the
headlines would read South Carolina podcaster's son accused of pedophilia, and I would understand
it because I've been a journalist for 15 years. I know that my work focused on exposing crime
and corruption would and should be called into question if a human I raised was accused of such a
horrific crime. But South Carolina is a state that values influence, power, and access. And though
he and others would deny it, John Monk is a major part of that system. In our opinions, and from what
we've seen, there's a secret code between the press and the powerful in this state. And that is to
never call out the elephant in the room, to maintain the status quo by protecting each other.
John Monk has done nothing in our opinions to ever call out blatant lies and contradictions
that come from criminal defense attorneys.
Time and time again, he seems to value the scoop over the inconvenient truth that the story
he's been given and the sources giving it to him need to be examined closer.
There's a real consequence for that, and I have been one of those consequences.
I simply want to know the truth.
When did John know that his son was a target of a criminal investigation?
And when did his bosses at the state know?
And what exactly did they do next?
We reached out for comment on Wednesday from John Monk's editor at the state.
As a publication time, we have not gotten a response.
But you can be sure we will update you if we hear back from him.
We will be following this story of Jonathan Monk's case closely.
We are also curious about his teaching timeline and his interactions with students.
There is always more to every story.
