Murdaugh Murders Podcast - TSP #87 - Bowen Turner Arrested (Again!) For Violating Parole + JP Miller’s Settlement Offer to Protesters
Episode Date: February 13, 2025Once again, investigative journalists — aka “bloggers,” “viral podcasters,” “spewers of bilious screed” and “self-proclaimed journalists”— Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have to ...tear up the script as their usual onslaught of breaking news hits on production day … but this time, they only have themselves to blame. On Tuesday, Mandy received a tip that thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner, of Orangeburg, South Carolina, had been at his county golf course that morning throwing back beers in direct violation of his latest parole conditions. With receipts in hand, Mandy immediately went to the authorities and ole Bowen Turner was arrested that evening. On today’s episode, Mandy and Liz talk about the behind the scenes of Bowen’s latest run-in with the law and what happens next, plus they share recordings of Bowen talking with his parents in the days before and after his latest parole hearing this past September. One thing they learned? Bowen’s dad had predicted Bowen’s golf club demise on Tuesday. Also on the show, the latest in the Mica Francis case and JP Miller’s collection of frivolous lawsuits against peaceful protesters — including an email that JP sent to three of the defendants’ lawyer, offering his unsolicited ideas on how they can settle his cases against them. Premium members will get an extended episode cut, featuring Bowen Turner’s latest attempt as getting off the sex offender registry. Yo, Bowen Turner is back in jail for the foreseeable future, and that is a big deal.
My name is Mandi Matney.
This is True Sunlight, a podcast exposing crime and corruption previously known as the
Murdoch Murders Podcast.
True Sunlight is a Lunashark production written with journalist Liz Farrell.
Hello and happy Thursday. Like most weeks, we had a completely different show planned for this week,
and then... Thrice-Accused Rapist Bowen Turner's arrests changed all of that.
So a lot of our coverage related to the J.P. Miller saga, including our follow-up reporting
into YouTuber Jan Lancaster, will have to wait until next week. Thankfully, reporter Beth Braden
has been keeping a close eye on J.P.'s judicial madness. So here is Liz with a quick recap before we get into
the rest of the episode.
Alright, so as you know, JP Miller's judicial clowning started about a month ago, on January
10th, when he filed 10 lawsuits in Myrtle Beach Magistrate Court. Less than two weeks
later, on January 21st, he added three more. Then,
three days later, he was like, boom, here's another one. And five days after that, on January 29th,
JP's felonious churchy business daddy, Wayne Miller, along with church members Dylan Markfurtin,
and Christina Best, also went to Magistrate Court and filed a total of 14 lawsuits between them.
All of them targeted at three OG protesters plus two new people. That left some of the protesters
facing four different frivolous lawsuits. And that's not all. JP then headed back to Magistrate Court on January 30th and January 31st and he filed
an additional six lawsuits.
That is a total of 34 lawsuits filed in Myrtle Beach Magistrate Court by JP and his churchy
business buddies in the past four weeks.
But so far, and predictably, but also thankfully, given that this is South Carolina and we all
know how the good ol' boy justice system works there, this is not going JP's way whatsoever.
As of the end of the day on Wednesday, a total of 15 of these cases have already been dismissed.
Now it's not clear how many of those cases were dismissed by the court alone or as a result
of JP and his Clown Town Court conspirators dropping their complaints.
The first of JP's cases to be dismissed happened on January 27th, just a week after he filed
it if that tells you anything.
Then on February 5th, two more of JP's cases were dismissed following a hearing. Chris Helms, an attorney for one of the February 5th defendants, said his client had no idea
who JP was and that she was not affiliated with Solid Rock.
Helms has since filed a motion for sanctions against JP for that one.
That hearing is set for March 19th.
On February 10th, all of Dylan Mark Ferting's lawsuits were dismissed.
Mark Ferting, who misspelled his last name in court documents, is reportedly a member of Solid
Rock as well as the son of Kristen Fazio, who is the former principal at Faith First Academy,
which was the school attached to Solid Rock. It closed in 2024. Mark Furting had named Alexandra Cuozzo,
Kristi Taylor, Melissa Pfeiffer,
and Sandra K. Karen in his lawsuits.
Then on February 11th, six more lawsuits,
two filed by Wayne Miller, two filed by Christina Best,
and two filed by JP were also dismissed. Also on February 11th, Columbia attorney Philip
Corey filed a notice of appearance on behalf of three of the protesters, Ali Quazo, who y'all
heard from last week, Melissa Pfeiffer, and Sandra Karen. In addition to the notice of appearance,
Corey filed a counterclaim against JP for each of his clients, as well as
a motion for a change of venue to move the cases out of Myrtle Beach Magistrate Court and into
Horry County Circuit Court. Meaning, they want to take this to Big Girl Court, where JP will
actually have to hire an attorney and could be on the hook for way more than the
$7,500 limit set for magistrate cases. A date for that hearing has not been set yet.
Now, we read Ali's 16 page counterclaim and her answer to JP's complaint. And we will
get into all of that in a later episode. But something happened this weekend that we need
to tell you about real quick. Ali's attorney received an email from John Paul Miller that I'm going to have David read.
Hello. How are you? Hope you're well. I received a letter saying that you are representing Melissa, Alexandra, and Sandra.
If you would like to settle, I can assure you that all lawsuits against them will be
be dropped if they would agree to the restraining order concerning myself, as well as a one-sentence
apology for the harassment.
Thanks so much for considering.
God bless. Capital P, lowercase j, lowercase p.
So let me get this straight. His negotiation suggestion is, if you admit to more than the
things I'm asking the court to force you to admit to, then I'll drop the part where
I want money. The literal origin of these lawsuits is that the protesters are calling out JP's alleged
coercive control abuse of Micah.
And he hates that, and he wants them to stop.
But then he sends an email where he displays
what appears to be a real need to control
and abuse and overpower people.
And if it wasn't obvious before, it should be now.
JP picked
Magister Court not only because it's the Wild West and a much cheaper route for
him to go, he picked it because he doesn't care about the money, he cares
about his ability to bully. In his lawsuits he's claiming emotional damage
and a loss of income because of supposedly each of these individual
protesters, but he's willing to drop that claim,
that frivolous and absurd claim,
in exchange for making the protesters essentially
sign away their First Amendment rights
and bow down to him and kiss his feet.
JP wants a one-sentence apology for the harassment,
so I'm a writer. I'll give him one.
I'm sorry that you're such a shamefully bad and hypocritical
pastor that the protestor's presence outside your church
businesses is stronger than your ability
to convince potential church members that you're not
the broken and morally bankrupt man you so obviously appear
to be.
I think it's time for JP to take a seat at his piano and
maybe play himself off the church stage.
Most weeks the justice system in South Carolina feels dark, disastrous, and dire
to me as a journalist and an advocate for victims. But every once in a while,
the light finally shines through and the hard
work finally pays off. That is what happened on Tuesday, at least in my small corner of
the world, and we have to talk about it and celebrate justice when it finally works the
way it should. So what happened? On Tuesday, while Liz and I were working on this week's
script full of all sorts of shocking
news and other cases we cover, an amazing woman who works at a Hillcrest golf course
in Orangeburg, South Carolina reached out to me on Instagram.
The woman, who I am going to call Hannah the Hero, would like to stay anonymous and as
much as I want to shout her name from the rooftops because
of what she did yesterday, I also will respect her wishes and her privacy."
Yesterday, Hannah The Hero said that Bowen Turner was at the golf course where she worked
and that he comes in at least once a week and drinks 12 to 18 beers while he plays golf
by himself.
This is all allegedly.
That said, Hannah the Hero said in the message that workers at Hillcrest have tried calling
Orangeburg police on Tuesday, and they said unless he was a disturbance, they couldn't
do anything about a thrice-accused rapist who was freshly paroled under one main condition
to not drink alcohol because of
his track record of being dangerous while he drinks. Yeah, they said that they could
do nothing unless he was causing a disturbance.
But Hannah the Hero didn't stop there. She then tried calling the state probation office,
who didn't answer. Bowen was not under their supervision, but we will get into that later.
Hannah the Hero stayed pesky. She told me that the last time Bowen was at her work,
he gave her the creeps and she didn't realize who he was until someone else told her to look him up.
With no help from law enforcement, Hannah the Hero then decided to message me on Instagram,
and I am so glad she did. Hannah the Hero told decided to message me on Instagram. And I am so glad
she did.
Hannah the Hero told me what was going on, and then she sent me actual receipts, with
Bowen Turner's name all over those receipts, buying beers on beers on beers on beers, Mick
Ultra after Mick Ultra after Mick Ultra, before noon, on a Tuesday, by himself.
This man was literally just released from prison on Halloween for violating his Useful
Offenders Act parole. He didn't have many rules to follow, but the main one was no drinking alcohol,
because every other incident where he was arrested has involved alcohol. So the terms of his parole were not strict
at all. But Bowen being Bowen just couldn't stay at home at least for the winter and give society
a break. He had to go golfing several times, apparently, while drinking openly in the same
community where alleged rape victim Dallas Stallers' family still lives. Bowen had to rub it in all of our faces, but everything always works out for him.
So if he wants to get drunk on a Tuesday in public by himself, he will do it.
But uh-oh, as the good ol' boys always do, he underestimated the power of pesky women.
So back to yesterday.
Hannah the Hero sent me receipts and sign-in sheets dating back to January that Bowen proudly
signed Bo Turner.
I asked if I could pass this information onto two other heroes that I knew would do something.
Attorney Sarah Ford, who has relentlessly fought for victims in this case, and Dallas
Stahler's father, Carl Stahler, who y'all have to hear on episode 91 of COJ.
Carl and Sarah immediately got to work, alerting SEDC and the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office,
where Carl has worked as a reserve deputy.
The heroes at SEDC victim services immediately sprung into action, and we sincerely thank
them for that."
It's important to know that Bowen was not released under the Department of Probation,
Parole, and Pardons.
He was released under intensive supervision of the Useful Offenders Act at SEDC.
Yes, I said intensive supervision.
So why would Bowen be so comfortable with getting tanked at his local municipal golf
course in broad daylight if he was under intensive supervision?
What happened there?
Hold on to that thought for a minute.
Several hours went by and I started to get more and more furious. Were they going to wait to send
officers to Bowen until his BAC was back to zero? Was SEDC actually going to do something about this,
or were they just gonna ignore it? Last night, I wanted to report Bowen's probation violation
publicly. I wanted to post his picture and the receipts showing what he did. I wanted
to put pressure on agencies to finally do their jobs and intensely supervise him like
they were supposed to be doing to protect the public.
But Liz reminded me that if I did that, we would run the risk of Bowen running off. And
I'm always going to pick the greater good over me getting
any scoop or breaking any news. So we waited patiently."
This morning, we got the official word from the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office and
SEDC that he was booked around 9 p.m. on Tuesday night for violating the terms of his conditional
arrest under the Useful Offender Act. These conditions were pretty freaking simple.
Do not drink alcohol, ever.
Do not break the law, etc., etc.
But Bowen Turner could not do that.
More on that in a minute.
We'll be right back. Hey there, listeners.
EB here and I want to tell you about a new weekly podcast that I'm hosting.
I love being a lawyer, being a speaker.
I absolutely am looking forward to being an author of my book, Anything But Bland, but
I'm excited to tell you that I'm launching my very own podcast called Good Skill, betting
on yourself.
I delve into the idea that success isn't merely about luck,
but is instead achieved through honing skills
and strategic efforts and planning.
Each episode of Good Skill offers listeners
an insightful journey into the minds of individuals
who are reshaping their respective industries
and their careers.
Good Skill serves as a beacon of
inspiration with a roster of interesting guests like independent journalist, media disruptor,
and Cup of Justice co-host Mandy Matney. These conversations empower listeners seeking to make
their mark in the world. Visit the ericbland.com website to learn more or listen wherever you get The South Carolina Department of Corrections issued a statement that said, Turner was arrested
without incident last night by agents from SCDC's Office of Inspector General
with assistance from the Orangeburg County
Sheriff's Department.
He is being held in the Orangeburg Calhoun
Regional Detention Center.
He will appear before an SCDC Administrative Review
Hearing Officer who will review his case
and based on review findings make a
recommendation to the SCDC intensive supervision administrative review
authority. That board will determine whether Turner violated the conditions
of his release. He will be held in the detention center until that process
takes place which should be within the next two weeks.
All right, so what does that mean?
From what we're hearing, the terms of Turner's release
were clear cut.
There's no drinking alcohol,
and if you are ever caught drinking,
you go straight back to jail and then prison
after the Intensive Supervision Administrative Review
Authority reviews the charges.
But of course, this is also America
where we have due process and whatnot.
And that due process tends to help men like Bowen Turner,
but that's another discussion for another day.
So in the next two weeks, Bowen Turner will go
before the SCDC Intensive Supervision
Administrative Review Authority Board
who will decide how long Bowen Turner
goes back to prison for.
We have been told he should be sentenced to at least a year to 18 months because this
is a complicated sentence and to fully understand how we got here, I highly recommend listening
to episode 71 on the 10 systemic failures that got us to this point.
But for a quick recap, just to solidify that we are here right now
because of a man who has proven to be incapable of following the law and a system that has
chosen to protect him over the victims. Reminder, Bowen was first accused of sexual assault
of a teenager at her home in May 2018. Sled investigated that accusation and their investigation never resulted in
charges. Less than a year later, Bowen allegedly raped Dallas Stoller at a party in Bamberg
County, South Carolina. He was charged for Dallas' assault in January 2019. Just six
months after he was charged, Bowen was out on bond and assaulted Chloe Bess at a party in yet another county in June
2019.
If this system were working, Chloe never would have been assaulted.
Bowen would have stayed behind bars until his trial for Dallas' assault.
Oh, and if they valued the safety of innocent women more than they valued the comfort and
freedom of an accused rapist, then Dallas
Stoller would be alive today.
She died from self-inflicted wounds while she was waiting for justice in her case after
being relentlessly bullied by Bowen's friends to include his friend's parents.
Even though Turner violated his bond conditions more than 60 times, including one time when he visited the cemetery
where Dallas was laid to rest.
The system just keeps giving this man grace.
In 2022, Turner was represented by a powerful lawmaker,
state Senator Brad Huddo,
who is known for his influence in the state house,
particularly his influence on deciding
which judges get appointed.
Huddo worked his good old boy magic hard for Bowen, really hard,
and he managed to magically turn a bond revocation hearing into a plea agreement hearing
with little notice to the victims and their families who were there to outline for the court
the numerous times Bowen had violated his house arrest without any repercussion.
And Huddo did this with the helpful hands of prosecutor David Miller, who has many times
tried to be a judge, and Judge Markley Dennis, who doesn't normally appear in Orange County,
but he sure was there that day.
And Dennis basically said, sure, buddy.
And they violated, in our opinion, the victim's rights by not allowing them to have a real
say before sentencing was decided. Now the South Carolina Court of Appeals decided in January that the victim' rights by not allowing them to have a real say before sentencing was decided.
Now the South Carolina Court of Appeals decided in January that the victims' rights were
not violated, but I highly suggest that you all listen to episodes 72 and 73 and think
about what a shame that decision was from the Court of Appeals because here we are.
Back to April 2022, Hutto managed to get prosecutor David Miller and Judge Markley Dennis to agree
to drop the rape charges and allow for Bowen to plea down to simple assault
for what he did to Chloe Bess.
And what did Judge Markley Dennis decide was a good enough sentence for this man?
Five years probation under the youthful offenders act with one year suspended
sentence in a surprise to literally no one,
Bowen violated his parole in less than a month
after that sweetheart sentence
and was back in jail for public disorderly conduct.
And he reportedly threatened to bite a deputy
during his arrest.
He was sentenced to a year in prison
under the Youthful Offender Act,
which brings us to November, 2023,
when he was released from prison the first time.
Less than five months after Bowen was released from prison for his
offense of violating probation, in March 2024, Bowen Turner was arrested again
when he was in a DUI crash in Florence County, South Carolina. He was charged with driving
under the influence, having an open container of beer or wine in a motor vehicle,
not wearing his seatbelt, public disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.
Ma'am, I am a white boy, okay? Can I please speak to you? Ma'am, you can stop five minutes
before the jail. Can I please speak to you? Ma'am, it is important that I speak to you.
please speak to you ma'am it is important that I speak to you ma'am I cannot go there okay I feel unsafe can I please speak to you ma'am I will tell you
whatever you want to know you wanna ma'am I cannot go there ma'am ma'am I
cannot go here ma'am I can't go here ma'amam. Ma'am, ma'am, ma'am. Ma'am, I feel unsafe, ma'am.
Ma'am, I can't go here, ma'am.
Yeah, remember that?
So in that absolutely insane incident
where Bowen Turner nearly crashed his car into another car
and was so lucky he didn't kill anyone.
The court basically gave him another pass.
All of the charges, except for the resisting arrest charge,
were adjudicated within lightning speed.
Bowen pleaded guilty to the other charges
and got time served for his sentence.
Time served being the 17 days he remained in jail
while they tried to figure out what to do with him
for violating the terms of his probation.
Not only have we never seen a DUI case
get pleaded that quickly before,
several attorney sources of ours hadn't either.
Usually cases like that take months, not days.
And that's not even the grossest part.
The worst part about Bowen's March 2024 arrest
is that Sarah Ford and Karl Stoller had to fight like hell
to keep Bowen behind bars.
The judge was set to let him go again,
but still they gave him time served for charges
that could have extended his prison sentence
and added at
least a few more months in prison. Bowen has never gotten the max sentence on
anything he has been charged with, which makes us ask the question, what are max
sentences even for? So Bowen spent about seven months in jail and get this, on
September 25th, he pleaded guilty to resisting arrest
in Florence County General Sessions Court.
Judge David P. Carricker Jr. gave Bowen Turner
another easy pass by sentencing him to 18 days,
time served for the resisting arrest charge.
So because of all of these massive failures from powerful men who apparently do not care
about the safety of women, Bowen Turner was released from prison on Halloween in 2024.
We shouted about his release from the rooftops because we were terrified another woman was
going to be hurt or even killed.
We plastered his photo all over social media
and we told women to be alert and be vigilant
because nothing about Bowen's behavior has convinced us
that his little time in WyoA prison
has reformed him in the least bit.
Well, that message eventually reached Hannah the hero
and because of her vigilance and her bravery,
Bowen Turner is now behind bars
where he should remain until at least 2026,
if the system works the way it should.
Can I also give a shout out to Hillcrest Golf Course
for taking a stand here,
for showing this man that their golf course
is not his playground where he can violate his probation
and taunt and endanger others without consequences.
Whew.
So yesterday was a roller coaster of emotions
for many of us that were involved in Bowen's arrest.
But you know the most powerful emotion that I felt
between anger, worry, disgust, and sadness?
I felt relief.
I felt a wave of relief
knowing that I would be reporting this story,
the one where the bad guy does a bad thing
and gets caught and goes to jail,
and not another story.
This month marks six years since Mallory Beach lost her life in a boat crash
caused by a very drunk 19-year-old Paul Murdoch.
Since 2019, Liz and I have been watching Bowen Turner's case
because it felt so similar to Paul Murdoch's.
Both appeared to be young, privileged white men raised in South Carolina families
that refused to discipline them even when their actions hurt others.
Both Paul and Bowen allegedly suffered from untreated alcoholism from a young age, according to sources.
Unfortunately for Paul, he lost his life before he faced real consequences for his actions. He was killed by his father, Elick,
who was endlessly frustrated with Paul for the boat crash
and subsequent lawsuit exposing
Elick's multi-million dollar crimes.
Paul never got the opportunity to pay
for what he did to Mallory.
But Bowen Turner, who is now 22,
has been given dozens of opportunities
to turn his life around.
And he has taken all of those chances and used them to spit in the face of every powerful
man that has ever helped him and every victim who wanted him to get help.
Today I am relieved because I am reporting on Bowen Turner's return to jail rather than
the story that I feared the most.
Every time I get a message about Bowen Turner,
my heart drops and I fear the worst.
I fear that Bowen's reckless and dangerous behavior
will one day kill another human being.
And what we're doing here on True Sunlight Podcast
is important because it took every single one of us to change the
course of this story.
I spent so many hours on the phone with people who loved Mallory Beach and now I want to
do everything we can to prevent a tragedy like what happened to Mallory.
So today, sunlight wins, justice wins, vigilance wins, And let this be a lesson in peskiness paying off in the long run, every single time.
Those of us in the sunlight should celebrate, because we don't get days like this that
often.
And now, for those of you who have enabled Bowen Turner, you should have the day that
you deserve. That includes Senator
Brad Hutto, Markley Dennis, Solicitor Bill Weeks, Prosecutor David Miller, Judge
Carraker, members of the JMSC who sought to downplay all of this in the name of
paying back David Miller for all of the favors that he did for them this go
around. And that includes you, Todd Rutherford.
Oh, and to all the pathetic pricks in Orangeburg who chose to support Bowen Turner to the detriment
of Dallas Stoller.
And that includes Bowen's parents.
Shame on all of you.
If any of you are capable of feeling emotions, today I hope you feel deep shame and regret,
and also I hope you feel relief.
Blood could have been on your hands today.
I hope each of you learn a lesson in what happens when you enable a man who has proven
to be incapable of following the law, and what happens when you use your
position of power to support evil at the expense of public safety.
Again, all of you monsters should take a deep sigh of relief and spend the rest of your
lives making better choices to make up for what you did here.
And all of you should sincerely appreciate and apologize to a long list of heroes, including
Chloe Bess, Hannah, Sarah Ford, Carl Stahler, employees at the SEDC Victim Services, and
the South Carolina Victims Assistance Network. assistance network. Sunlight won today, and we will carry that momentum into tomorrow.
Now we're not saying we're fortune tellers, but we knew that when the state allowed Bowen
to leave prison this past fall that we would be seeing him again, sadly. Like Karl Stahler
said last year, Bowen has allowed himself to get
institutionalized and once again, if the state had done its job and David Miller hadn't rolled
over in court so Brad Huddo could rub his belly, Bowen would have maybe had a chance at actual
rehabilitation. Because again, Dallas Stahler's blood isn't just on David Miller's hands,
it's on Bowen's hands. And if he has any semblance of a conscience
buried within that keg of a human body,
the state robbed Bowen of an opportunity
to figure out how to carry that burden with him
for the rest of his life in a way
that doesn't cause further damage to him
and everyone within his vicinity.
Now, as you heard a little bit earlier,
after Bowen's arrest in Florence County last year,
we foiled for the dashboard cameras
from the State Highway Patrol officer's car
who drove him to jail.
And you saw how gross those were, right?
Bowen, with evidence of his single vehicle car wreck
on his face and wearing a shirt unbuttoned all the way
with his beer belly hanging out,
calling the female trooper a bitch and using homophobic slurs to her, rack on his face and wearing a shirt unbuttoned all the way with his beer belly hanging out,
calling the female trooper a bitch and using homophobic slurs to her.
And Bowen telling her to take him to his grandma's house and not to jail because he's a white
boy and white boys don't belong in jail.
You remember all that?
Obviously, we learned a lot about Bowen from that video that you heard earlier and the
ones that we've shared before
and where he was on his rehabilitation journey, which is to say back behind square one. When we
heard that he might be getting released last October, we decided to FOIA for his prison phone
calls for the days before and after his parole hearing in late September. We finally got those
phone calls in December and we've been holding on to them for
this day here, the day we knew would come. The calls we got were between Bowen and his mother
and father and they were heavily redacted. But there were some very interesting moments. We've
had so many questions about Bowen's parents and why they keep rescuing him. Why aren't they holding him accountable?
Over and again in his prison files,
the state has noted that Bowen has a very strong
support system at home with his family.
And that's clear.
In these calls, Bowen's parents seem very loving,
but beleaguered.
They don't seem to have that same arrogance
or entitlement that we saw with the Murdochs and Paul, or
that we maybe assumed before hearing these calls.
And I think any parent listening to these with maybe troubled children of their own
might recognize themselves in these calls, in fact.
But conversely, and in our opinion, Bowen's parents seem steamrolled by him at times.
They half-heartedly entertain his notions and his plans and his requests,
and we occasionally see them try to push back,
but it's pretty clear Bowen is in charge here.
Let's take a listen starting with a call
from September 22nd.
This is three days before his parole hearing,
and Bowen sounds tired or out of it.
when sounds tired or out of it. What times are we getting home last night? We got back here before the Carolina game was over.
I don't even remember exactly.
What time did we get here?
Not 11.
Not 11. I think we kid 45, something like that.
I saw Carolina 150 to 7.
Yeah.
Yeah. Um.
On the TV, like, they're at the stand for
Stephanie, which is
not good, but anyway.
So. So you get 25 to hit him? Not good, but anyway.
So you just told me to chop the hay down?
I took a chameleon and just put the...
I already ate that peanut butter.
How?
I already ate all that peanut butter.
You had four jars and you ate it?
Yes ma'am.
How do you eat four jars of peanut butter in a couple of days? I don't know, but it's my dear, but it's not that hard.
It must be smart.
They're not like the size jars, they're the ones in the street.
After a more small talk, Bowen asked to speak with his father and they talked about the Carolina game. Now, every time Bowen says goodbye to his parents, they tell him that they love him,
and he responds that he loves them too.
So the next day, he called and his mother picked up, right as Bowen was talking to someone
at the prison.
You know what was badass, too, when I had like Decepticons come?
What's your name?
How are you? Yeah, I'm kind of like Decepticon scum. I know. Boo! That's just hard. All the life departments while you're here.
How are you?
Yeah.
I'm fine. How are you?
I'm fine.
I'm fine.
I'm fine.
That was hard.
All the life departments while you're here.
That was hard.
Huh?
Me and my roommate are talking about best Transformers lines of all time.
The what, now?
The best Transformer lines of all time. The what now? The best transformer lines of all time. I was like,
listen, if you gave me a headset and played all of Optimus Prime battle speeches, you
his prime battle speeches and then you could drop me in Gaza and the Israel war would be
over in two days. Like I'm going to war. Okay? Give me 24 hours. Yeah, we'll settle this.
He goes... Yeah. And then we were talking about John Wick. I was like one of the hardest movie lines of all time was when John Wick
The dude was like no John Wick is not the boogeyman. He's who you seem to kill the boogeyman
And you pissed him off
Right the most badass movie line and then I'll come out and watch man where he was like you don't understand
I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me
We're just and then we got on the Transformers thing we were talking about there I'm not locked in here with you. You're locked in here with me.
And then we got on the transformer stalling over time out there.
Bowen continues to keep talking to the roommate
while his mother is on the line.
There are minute long chunks redacted out of there
in between Bowen's bursts of movie quoting.
His mom just sits on the line and listens.
Finally, she tries to change the subject
and perhaps remind Bowen that she's on the phone
by asking him if they got to go outside today.
Bowen says, yes, ma'am, and then asks the roommate
which Transformers movie had Megatron in it,
and he says something about someone fighting for Cybertron.
Then about two minutes of the call is redacted
before we pick up again with Bowen talking about
what he bought with $60 in canteen money
that someone other than his parents, I guess, sent to him.
And he purchased chips, drink mixes, pizzas,
french fries, donuts, Ajax, and toilet paper.
Then he asks his mom for another $20 and the
phone call is redacted for another minute. Bowen's mom tells him about his dog who just got neutered,
and then Bowen talks to his dad about when to be at the hearing and where it'll be. They end the
call and then Bowen calls back. After he says hello to his dad, the recording is redacted for
three minutes. And then it picks back up again and they talk about Bowen's back. After he says hello to his dad, the recording is redacted for three minutes.
And then it picks back up again and they talk about Bowen's fears about the parole hearing. I'm like, they're gonna try and do something to wear, you know what I mean? Yeah, they ain't gonna try to do anything, though.
And I always worry about...
That's the basic game.
I'd be worried that they're gonna come up with some BS charge, you know what I mean?
No, they ain't gonna do that.
His dad then changes the conversation to Monday Night Football.
On September 24th, one day before the hearing, Bowen again talks to his dad about his concerns.
Again, the call is heavily redacted, but from the parts that we can hear, one of Bowen's
biggest concerns is whether he is going to have to wait around court all day. He tells his dad that he has heard
that SEDC inmates get priority and will get heard first.
But I know as soon as I'm done, I can leave.
I don't have to sit there and wait.
Yeah.
So I'm sure they'll try to get you out.
I hope they do. I'm not trying to sit there.
It's just so boring in that home, so I can they do. I'm not trying to say that. It's just so boring in that home. So I can imagine.
I'm sorry. I get so bored.
I sit there and I like to walk around the room.
Yeah, I can imagine.
Cause it's not like here, like here I have a TV, a tablet, you know?
Yeah. And I can't help nobody.
So yeah, the boy is getting what seems like his millionth chance at life is complaining
about how boring that process is for him.
He tells his dad that whenever he has a court appearance, the other inmates ask him about
what the yard is like and that annoys him.
And then he seems to do a racially based impression of someone asking him if he knows their cousin,
little Draco.
Bowen's like, there are a thousand people here.
I don't know everyone.
His dad laughs a little but says, you never know.
You might know them.
Then his dad tries to change the subject and they talk about a funny episode of Big Bang
Theory.
After talking more about their dogs and the weather, the conversation turns to Bowen's
parole hearing and what's going to happen afterward.
His dad tells him that he imagines one of the conditions will be that Bowen will have
to register at the Dawn Center, a county-run drug and alcohol treatment center in Orangeburg,
the day after his release.
Here's Bowen's response, and get ready,
because this is the height of irony and foreshadowing.
Yeah, I would imagine you gotta go
for aid and register again,
and then she's probably, you know,
just like last time,
how you going through the dawn center like next day. See, I'm gonna gonna tell him that at least give me two days. Let me lay down.
Well, it's better just to get it over with.
You want me to lay down? So she told you? So that's what she told you?
No, no, she didn't tell me that, but I'd imagine it'd be something like that.
I mean, probably be something like that.
I mean, probably be the same rules as last time.
But you're gonna do a better job this time and I won't bitch about anything, anything like that.
Cause you got one year, you know?
I'm just gonna buy me a damn gaming system
and stay at the house."
Yikes!
Well, that loser plan went south, huh?
Bowen's dad continues to tell him, you just need to behave for another year.
Yeah, I mean, you need to be able to complete one year.
But you know what I'm saying?
I just need to buy me a gaming system and find a game that I
like and just stay at the house. Well I mean that's things you can do, I would imagine.
To keep yourself occupied.
But I'm ready to take off. I I wanna go to the driving range.
If I gotta go to the ball center,
I wanna go to like the Hillcrest driving range that day.
If I gotta go to the ball center that morning,
well, we'll put.
We ain't getting ahead of ourselves, we'll see.
Golf, you say, at Hillcrest,
near your court mandated alcohol treatment center, you say?
I hate to be repetitive, but this right here
should have been a big red flag
that Bowen is not ready to leave jail.
He's not going to take it seriously.
And also, all of us know what a dad means
when he says we'll see, right?
We don't even know Bowen's dad, but we know that tone.
And that tone immediately is like, he's on to you here, Bowen, but Bowen keeps going.
I was mad because I was starting to play the best golf I ever played.
Well, ain't nothing to get mad at now.
I mean, I was starting to hit my irons really well. Couldn't chip the shit
and couldn't putp the shit still, but I was hitting my irons really well. Yeah. But I
could tell you know, but we aren't going to get anymore where I don't trust you Bowen.
You know I didn't trust you last time because every time I'm going to play by myself, I
knew what you were doing.
Yeah, son.
I'm not stupid.
Sometimes I like to play by myself though because you can kind of get away with some
music that you always drank when you played by yourself.
No, I didn't.
Not every time.
Yeah, you did.
No, I didn't.
Not every time. Yeah, you did. No, I didn't.
Not every time." And the rest of the call is redacted.
But can you believe that?
Bowen isn't even out of jail yet at this point,
and he's concerned about how his parole hearing
is going to go.
He is worried that they're not gonna let him out.
In the meantime, Carl, Sarah, Chloe, and us, and you guys, we're all like, stop letting
him out.
He has proven that he's not ready.
He is not taking this seriously.
And his dad knows this too.
Bowen Turner is already planning his own demise.
He's not even out the door, and he's like, I'm gonna do what
I want. We've got a lot more to share on this, after a short break with our amazing sponsors. Okay, so Bowen called back to talk to his dad about something bad that another inmate
told him could happen at his parole hearing.
We don't know what that is because that part was redacted, but here's the rest of that
conversation, some of which was also redacted.
We're going to play the parts all together. the last time? No, they aren't gonna do that. Well dad, I want to make sure because you know they
will try to do me any type of way. I don't want to just go in there. I want to call you back at five.
Bowen, I'm gonna tell you something right now. That's nothing to worry about. That's not gonna
happen. The reason you're in jail is because of those charges, right? Yeah, but this is what I'm
trying to say. That's the reason your parole got revoked.
Now I ain't gonna sit here and argue with you about this.
That's not what I'm saying, dad.
You're not listening to what I'm saying.
I know exactly what you're saying.
I know.
Bowen, that's not gonna happen.
Happened to him?
How couldn't it happen to me?
I'm just telling you, Bowen.
All right, don't sit there the issue is, but oh, how true are those words?
Anyway, the call ended after that.
We're not sure if they hung up or continued and it was redacted.
That same day, though, there was another call.
Yeah, I'm just a little nervous about tomorrow.
Yeah, don't be nervous.
It'll be alright.
I just don't want to be.
But see, I get worried because I always return home.
I get worried they're going to make up some charge
and you know what I mean?
But when they ain't going to make up any charge,
what kind of charge could they make up?
I don't know.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
I always get nervous about stuff like that because they don't want me home
and I feel like people will do anything to keep me from coming home. No, you can't. Don't worry. Interesting, right? Bowen is saying that he's worried
that the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office
is going to make up charges against him,
as if that has at all been a problem for him.
Every charge Bowen has had, he has fully earned.
Anyway, you can see why his dad loses patience with him,
but it's curious how they seem to both think
that there might be lingering charges out there, right? They said if they were gonna do it, they would have done it a long time
ago. What, pray tell, are they talking about? After Bowen's hearing, he calls his parents and
they talk about how fast the hearing was that day and what they thought of the judge. There's a
two-minute redaction in the middle, but we're going to play it all as one piece. You back?
Yeah, that was quick.
Yeah, yeah, I knew it would be fairly quick.
Were you there?
Yeah, I was there.
You didn't turn around, never turned around and looked.
Well, because I didn't know if the media was there.
You know, when they're there, I don't like to turn around.
Well, I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around.
I don't like to turn around. I don't like to turn around. I don't like to turn around. I don't like to turn around. I didn't know if the media was
there you know when they're there I don't like to turn around well I don't
blame you I'm just I'm just kidding with you you know but I was the media there
anybody any media no nobody yeah but that judge was cool I liked him he was
quick he didn't get you know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah, he didn't try to
give a speech or anything like that. And, you know, yeah, that's what I liked. He was good.
I guess in their minds, the good judges are the ones who don't take time to make sure defendants
like Bowen hear the truth about themselves and their situations.
After the hearing,
Bowen clearly started thinking about his freedom.
Later that day, here's what he asked his mom.
Hello?
Hey.
Hey.
Hey, will you give me a candle for my room
for when I come home?
A candle?
Yeah, I'd like a good smelling candle. Yeah. Thank you.
What makes you think about that? I don't know. I was reading stuff about candles
earlier on the news. Not on one of the news things. What did it say? It was
like on one of these like men's ones where it's got like the best
colognes or the best
candles and stuff and it just had me thinking like I wouldn't mind having a candle.
So that was bizarre.
I should note that also in another call that day Bowen's mother sort of tiptoes into the
area of maybe scolding Bowen, but instead she offers an explanation
for why she didn't take his call earlier in the day.
The explanation was, I'm working.
And from her tone, it seemed like this wasn't the first time
he's tried to call her when she's at work.
His excuse was, well, he needed more money for the canteen
because he's run out of what he called cooking food and said that cooking food is what he does to pass the time.
Reminder, he's had at least two canteen deposits over the past three days,
according to these phone calls.
The next day, he calls his mom again.
And while she's telling him about work that day and about a tornado
watch that had been issued, Bowen interrupts her with this. I was looking at this watch on the news today. I said that's a badass watch and it was like
one of those budget things
I'm gonna get this watch and then it's like forty five hundred dollars. I said get the out of here man. And that's a budget watch?
That's what I was saying. I was like where who budget?
Who's budget is that on?
Yeah, I mean we're talking about Jeff Be Bay versus budget? What are we talking about?
Oh yeah. It ain't our budget. It ain't for a safe pay to the teacher. Yeah, I'll show it to you when I get out of the G-Shot. It's a G-Shot. I'll show it to you.
Okay. Well, the G-Shot, they have a bunch of different high points that they
Know this one's like $400
Are the one you were looking at? Yes, ma'am
Maybe it could be a Christmas present. We'll have to wait and figure out money for
That's fine. I mean, it's not I don't have to I want to get like I don't know I'll figure out some kind of cuz I want to wear a watch I'll find something
I'm sure I can find one on eBay
Yeah
But what we talk to we'll have to see
But maybe the quickness with the money you get you could get one and
We might not be able to do as much as we did last year with the money you get, you could get one. I'll go with this one. You'll go for me?
We might not be able to do as much as we did last year.
We'll see.
I think I want for real Christmas
a card to be like golf balls.
He wants golf balls.
Again, how'd that turn out for you, Bone?
But seriously, this whole exchange has severe Ralphie
from Christmas Story vibes to it.
He wants that Red Ryder BB gun,
and when his parents are like, you'll shoot your eye out,
he gets pouty and is like, yeah, maybe some socks then.
It is so manipulative.
The only difference here is that Ralphie was 10 and Bowen is a man.
Anyway, both of Bowen's parents work for the state of South Carolina and I can't even
imagine how much money they spent on trying to help him stay out of prison only for him
to screw up again and again and again.
During that same call, Bowen gave his mother some shopping instructions for clothes he was going to need when he got home
jeans shirts
Patagonia shorts which his mother looked up while she was on the phone with him and was shocked by the price tag
Then he asked for this
I want to get like a jacket like a
another like dress jacket
What kind of dress jacket? Not necessarily a dress jacket but like a Not to rub salt in the wound, but I don't think Mr. Turner is going to be wearing that
fancy jacket to dinner for a while.
Anyway, the next day, there was Bowen's biggest request of all. He for a while. Anyway, the next day there was Bowen's
biggest request of all. He wanted a car.
Much of the call is redacted, but it ends with Bowen asking his mom to put his dad on
the phone.
His dad tries to talk about the weather, but Bowen has an agenda.
It sounds like his ATV.
You know, the one that he was pulling the day that he got into his little DUI crash
last year.
That ATV is either with law enforcement still or with someone else.
Whatever that story,
Bowen is pissed about it. He tells his dad he wants that ATV back to strip it.
And in some ways, this conversation is the best example of Bowen's relationship with his parents.
I said they do these things called skeleton four-wheelers, right?
Yeah. So basically what they'll do is when
something like this happens because that engine in that four wheeler is still
good you know what I mean yeah they'll buy they'll find the old
parted out four wheel like the frame of it yeah and they'll stick those big
engines in it and people will buy those for a lot of money to turn them into like mud
machine
You know what I mean?
Yeah, he's been explaining to me how to do it and I'm sure if I watch enough YouTube videos and stuff
I could probably figure it out
Well, we'll see about
So they're not gonna do anything with that for us
So you need to just go ahead and tell them to bring it to the house and I could sell it and we could at
Least get some money back for it
But you see what I'm saying cuz I want to help cuz I hate
Yeah, I don't like
We'll pay all right. I know
Just tell them to drop it off at the house, dad.
I'm telling you, just trust me on this one.
Alright, boss.
Alright, boss.
But we'll talk.
Just trust me on this one, dad.
Sure, you spent our family's limited resources
on my super expensive fancy defense
to keep me out of prison.
Sure, I immediately violated that
trust by getting arrested again, making the whole thing pretty much a waste because now I'm a sex
offender. Sure. I went to prison and you now became people with a kid behind bars and had to
foot the bill for that and listen to me complain day after day as I play the victim. And sure,
I got out again and again didn't last very long on the outside because I wrecked
an expensive pickup truck and ATV and then I got arrested and recorded on camera insulting
women and being racist and homophobic and elitist and demanding and just overall disgusting.
And sure, that landed me back in prison. And I'm about to get out again.
And I'm already talking about going golfing by myself, where you know I try to secretly drink.
But trust me, dad.
So, after deadline on Wednesday, a report was published by a local TV station about
Bowen's arrest, saying that in addition to everything we've told you in today's episode,
that Bowen had tested positive for THC, which is 0% shocking.
But when I read the article, I assumed that that meant that Bowen was tested on Tuesday
night when he was arrested.
More than that, I was confused
as to why SEDC didn't send us the warrant knowing that we had been on this story all day and we were
the first to report it. Then we all found out why. When we finally got the warrant late Wednesday,
it was immediately obvious. Because had they sent us the warrant, they likely knew that something would stand out to us
that wouldn't stand out to the other reporters
covering this story.
Bowen failed his drug test on February 6th,
but was only arrested after they knew there was a witness
to Bowen's parole violations Tuesday,
and that they knew that the victims knew,
and possibly they even that the victims knew and possibly they even
knew that I knew.
Why wasn't Bowen arrested last week when he failed the drug test?
Is this yet another good ol' boy thing or did they not know about the drug test results?
And by the way, I find that hard to believe.
It should not take long for THC results to come back.
And they were certainly available Tuesday evening, right?
Because it's there in the warrant.
I don't know why I'm surprised by any of this
because it's more of the same.
We all started the day off happy,
knowing that we finally had some evidence
that good people who stand up and do the right thing
in South Carolina do get rewarded.
Hannah stood up for what was right and the justice system responded, which was amazing.
And it still is.
And I'm still happy about that.
And more people need to be like Hannah.
But come on, South Carolina.
Why does there always have to be a spotlight on you
to do the right thing?
And where is the media right now?
They should be asking questions and applying more pressure.
We cannot do this alone.
The Fourth Estate has never been more important
and it crumbles further every time
legacy media ignores a story like this one.
Here's the thing that I have learned.
The audacity of little men like Bowen Turner is endless.
Like JP, Bowen Turner is a societal menace who will not stop until the legal system stops him.
In the last few years of covering these men with endless audacity, we have learned how
to report on them in a way that is actually helpful and not hurtful to the victims.
You know the other day on Cop of Justice, Eric Bland asked Liz and I if we ever wanted
to interview
Elick Murdoch and JP Miller, and we both said no.
And I think that's what makes Liz and me different from most journalists.
We understand that men like Elick Murdoch and JP Miller and Bowen Turner could give
long internet-breaking, click-worthy interviews.
But we also know that these men have a history
of lying, manipulation, and talking themselves out
of whatever they get into.
So instead of interviews with alleged abusers,
we like to expose them in other ways,
like their prison phone calls that show the world
how messy and manipulative
these men are when the masks are off.
Bowen's mask has been off for a long time, and the phone calls only assured us of what
we knew, that he hasn't been rehabilitated and he has not learned from his actions, and
he deserves to spend every bit of the remainder
of his five-year sentence behind bars.
We can only hope that SEDC Intensive Supervision Administrative Review Authority sees that
too.
