Hey there. EB here, your faithful Cup of Justice co-host.
I am so excited to tell you about my new book, Anything But Blank.
In this memoir, I share stories about my childhood, marked by bullying, my father's job loss,
and the indomitable spirit that propelled me into the law and ultimately international
recognition during the Alex Murdoch murder trial.
I believe in certain life principles that have helped me and helped others achieve success.
From the power of organization and a sense of urgency to the importance of truth, leadership,
and resilience.
With vivid recollection from challenges and triumphs framing each chapter, success isn't
about luck.
It's earned through skill and hard work.
Please visit TheErikBland.com to learn more about the book,
Anything But Bland is the manifesto for those seeking triumph over adversity
and a guide for anyone aspiring to reach their full potential.
I don't know if we will ever find out who killed Stephen Smith. But after the recent developments with Buster Murdoch's lawsuit,
I'm hoping with all of my heart that we are getting closer to the truth,
and more importantly, closer to getting justice for Sandy Smith.
My name is Mandi Matney. This is True Sunlight, a podcast exposing crime and corruption, previously known as
the Murdoch Murders podcast.
True Sunlight is a Lunashark production written with journalist Liz Farrell.
Hello and we are back in Hilton Head.
We have two positive updates to start off our show today.
The first is that thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner, currently in SEDC custody for violating
his parole yet again, was denied by the Court of Appeals in his attempt to get removed
from the sex offender list.
Remember when he got his sweetheart deal, pleading down to just one assault charge and
getting probation?
When he was specifically told that if he violated his probation, he would be put on the sex
offender list.
And of course, he broke the rules almost immediately after that.
Then did it again two years later and again this year.
So yeah, the South Carolina Court of Appeals was like, no-bo.
And honestly, I will take that one as a win because you never know with these good ol'
boys.
Another win is that Krista Bauer Gillies' autopsy is now listed in the online Harris
County database as complete, for the first time since she was killed in October.
This is good news, as Krista's loved ones have been anxiously awaiting the autopsy report,
as it is a key component for the case against Lee to move forward.
Lee Gilley, Krista's husband, who was accused of strangling Krista to death and killing
his nine-week-old unborn baby has managed to delay his arraignment
hearing multiple times.
He is currently out and about around Houston after he managed to pony up the money for
his $1 million bond last October.
He is approximately one of 800 defendants in Harris County, Texas who are currently
out on bond for murder charges, and that is according to a former Harris County prosecutor.
We have not seen the results of this autopsy, but we hope that Lee Gilley will be indicted
this month before his hearing on April 29.
Texas law states that the DA's office has 180 days to indict a defendant.
If it extends past 180 days,
the defense can make a motion for dismissal
and the court is compelled to drop the charges.
However, if the DA has a good reason
for the delay in the indictment,
they can get an extension from the court.
Mid-April would be the 180-day deadline in this case.
And so yes, we hope to see this indictment any day now.
We also encourage anyone listening to this podcast to follow the Justice for Krista Facebook
and Instagram pages.
Krista's loved ones are asking for her supporters to wear purple every Tuesday in Krista's memory
and posting with the hashtag for Krista
in support of getting her justice.
Now let's talk a little bit about the latest
in Buster Murdoch's defamation case,
which at this point I could also call the latest
in the Stephen Smith investigation.
So if you listened to Cup of Justice this past Tuesday,
you got to hear our jaws hit
the floor when our co-host Eric Bland revealed not one, but two unusual occurrences that
happened the same week Buster filed a memorandum in federal court that indicated he planned
to present evidence showing that he didn't kill Stephen Smith, and that evidence included
depositions from people who have personal knowledge of
the events leading up to Stephen's death in July 2015.
The two odd occurrences that Eric told us about happened the same week in which we appear
to have been the only ones to have reported on those depositions, which is also very odd.
The national media has been covering the Stephen Smith case
since right after the Murdoch murders in June 2021, right after Mandy first made the very daunting
decision to write about this mysterious purported connection to the Murdoch family along with
Gloria Satterfield's death, known to the public. When Mandy first made the very daunting decision
to publicly write about this mysterious purported connection
to the Murdoch family along with the glorious Atterfield death.
Mandy and I had been working on the Stephen Smith case since right after the boat crash
in 2019, but it hadn't been written about since fall 2015 at that point.
We hadn't published anything about what was in Stephen's investigation file.
Once it was out there, once the South Carolina Highway Patrol
made the very unusual decision to release the lightly
redacted case file, which included recordings of law
enforcement interviews, national media and social media took it
to a whole new level and sure did a whole lot of speculating
beyond what was attributable to the South Carolina Highway
Patrol case file.
But now we have the son of Elec Murdoch, the son whose name was repeatedly given to investigators
back in 2015 as rumored to be connected to Stephen's death in some way.
Publicly saying that he has sworn depositions from people who know what led to Stephen's
death and we get crickets. Warned up positions from people who know what led to Stephen's death?
And we get crickets?
Guys, Buster is helping here and not one headline on that.
It's baffling y'all and really speaks to how fickle the press can be sometimes.
The media banged on Sandy Smith's door and harassed her with phone calls, begging for
her to talk to them and to be on their shows and appear in their documentaries,
all in the name of getting justice for Stephen and for Sandy's family.
So where are those people now?
Oh, right. Some are getting sued by Buster.
But the news is the news is the news.
Also, where are the armchair detectives and podcasters and wannabe influencers who glommed
onto Sandy in the name of wanting to help her?
Where are the trolls who accused us, the people who have had a relationship with Sandy for
six years now, of exploiting her and who accused Sandy of exploiting Steven?
Where is everyone now that there's this pretty big development in Steven's case?
Okay, I'm not going to keep harping on it because you guys know where we stand on the way the press
and social media treat victims of violent crimes and their families.
So let's talk about what Eric Bland dropped on us.
First, he said that Randy Murdoch called him last Thursday, the day we published our episode of True Sunlight
about the depositions, to tell him that someone had come forward with information on Stephen's
death.
So on the same day the public learns that Buster and his legal team are saying that
they ostensibly know what led to Stephen's death that night, Buster's uncle, the one
who was law partners with Elick but didn't testify in Elick's uncle, the one who was law partners with Elic but didn't
testify in Elic's trial, the one who was representing Stephen's father in a workers
comp claim at the time of Stephen's death and who the Smith family says inserted himself
into the case in a way that became suspicious to them once the Murdoch name started popping
up, called Eric Bland of all people.
The same Eric Bland who sued the pants off of PMPED in Gloria Satterfield's case
and made sure the world knew about what Ellic and Corey did
right under their law partner's noses.
Randy called Eric to tell him
that there's new information about Stephen's death.
The same Randy Murdoch, by the way, who Darryl Williams says told him to come forward in
late 2015 after an article ran in the Hampton Guardian all but accusing the Murdochs of
being involved in Stephen's death to say that it was actually Sean Connolly and possibly
Patrick Wilson who were responsible.
And this is an account of Darryl's, by the way, that differed greatly from one he had
given earlier to lawyers.
And when a so-called private investigator associated with attorney Andy Savage, who
briefly represented Sandy in 2021, spoke to Darrell Williams that same summer, he said
that Darrell was now denying that Randy had ever told him to do any such thing.
But again, it's the same Randy Murdock who called Eric Bland.
The same Randy Murdock who, in a December 1st, 2021 jailhouse call with Ellic, seemed
to indicate that he had knowledge of who was being subpoenaed to the grand jury in Ellic's
case.
Something that is supposed to have been kept very seriously secret.
Remember that?
We'll play the call just for fun.
I mean, the fact is every time there's a new, you know, a new case that comes up,
a new, you know, revelation of, you know, something you took, both those same
people very, very quickly are going to the, um, being subpoenaed to the state grand jury.
So, I mean, it's just, you know, there's going to be more to come.
Obviously, you know that.
And so, you know, you're right about that.
Just, I mean, the quicker that it all can come to a head, the better, obviously, I
think.
Again, in last week's filing, Buster seemed to indicate that he had knowledge of what
was happening with the grand jury in Stephen's case.
Right?
We'll talk more about that in a minute.
This is all to say that Randy Murdoch called Eric Bland.
Now, Eric Bland's firm represents Sandy Smith, so obviously there was a logical reason for
Randy to call Eric,
but the timing on that is interesting,
given that Buster had made that filing four days earlier.
Of course, Randy could have been referring to information
that came in after Buster's filing,
but it's still very notable that the uncle,
who allegedly involved himself in Steven's case back then is kind
of doing so now.
Also, I should tell you that Randy has denied inserting himself in the case in 2015 and
denies being on the scene of Steven's death as Steven's family has accused him of doing.
I should also note that State Highway Patrol Trooper Tommy Moore has confirmed that a photographer
from PMPAD was there and when the crime scene was still cordoned off, insisting that they
be let in.
Which, generous interpretation of that, right?
PMPAD was a personal injury law firm and its lawyers, including Ellic and his daddy, were known
to chase road fatality cases in exactly this manner.
Anyway, did Randy call Sled with that information?
Because what is Eric supposed to do with that?
It's now third-hand knowledge.
This whole thing seems confusing, but also very familiar.
Hang on to that thought for a second, because I need to tell you about a second bombshell
that Eric dropped this week.
He told us that a journalist called his office last week, refusing to give her name and saying
that she wanted to meet with him in person to share information with him about Steven's
death.
First, can people please stop calling themselves journalists when they are not trained to be
a journalist?
How do I know this woman wasn't a journalist, you ask?
Well, I'm guessing.
But I also know that real journalists identify ourselves in all of the ways.
We use our real names in phone calls.
We use our real names in phone calls. We use our real names on social media. We
do not hide behind anonymity because we cannot do that. It would destroy our credibility
otherwise.
Second, again, what is with this sudden influx of Steven-related information?
Wright as Buster is saying he intends to prove, and in fact can prove, that
he had nothing to do with Steven's killing, Right as Buster is throwing down the gauntlet
with his defendants, saying truth is a defense of defamation. So let's hear it, guys. But
it's fine. We'll take it. We just want answers. We just want the truth about what happened
to Steven Smith. And so far, Buster seems to be doing the work.
Okay, that aside, let's talk about Buster's
latest filing this week.
Like we've told you, one set of Buster's defendants
has been allowed to stay in federal court.
The other
two sets were sent back to Hampton County. Now, Buster has been trying to get the court
to reconsider its decision about the Warner Brothers defendants, the ones who are still
in federal court. This whole time, Warner Brothers' argument has centered around the original complaint
in which Buster mostly focused on what happened
in the Netflix documentaries, where a redheaded background actor wielded a bat.
Warner Bros. has basically been like, stop lumping us in with that.
And their lawyers have told the court that Buster really doesn't have an articulable
claim against them, so they moved to have the case dismissed. In response, Buster's
team was like, time out, we can fix that lickety split. So on Tuesday, they filed
an amended complaint against just the Warner Brothers defendants and it is
bold. First, this is related to two documentaries. The first is Low Country,
the Murdoch dynasty, which aired
on HBO in November 2022. And the second is Murdoch Murders, Deadly Dynasty, which aired
on Discovery ID in June 2022. Buster's argument is this, I'm suing you because most of your
documentaries were spent talking about my family being evil and interfering in criminal cases and my great grandfather
offing people and turning them into crab bait when they became problems and my family picking
and choosing who gets held accountable criminally and all of us just you know generally thinking
we can get away with whatever we want and then after all that you guys were like and here's this
case about a gay teenager
being killed in Hampton County, and here's Buster Murdoch, who is rumored to be involved.
It's the juxtaposition of those two things taken as a whole that Buster says amounts
to defamation by inference or implication.
So let's start here.
Buster's original complaint never
indicated whether he considered himself a private citizen in this case, which is
important. If the court considers Buster to be a private citizen, he will not have
to show that these defendants reported what they did with malice. If he's
considered a public figure, he will have to show the court that they intended to
harm his reputation with these documentaries. We've talked about this before, but Buster was pretty much just
a guy before 2019 when his brother's boat crash had people on social media talking out
about the family. And Buster remained pretty much just a guy until 2021 when his mother
and brother were murdered.
Obviously, Warner Brothers is going to argue that at the very least Buster was a limited public figure
and that the Murdoch story and all its ancillary parts were a matter of great public concern and interest
because it's not just a story about murders, it's a story about influence and the two systems of justice that exist in South Carolina.
While there's a really good argument as to why Buster should be considered a private
citizen, for instance, Elg's crimes are not Buster's fault or Buster's shame to bear,
we're going to predict that if this goes to trial, the Warner Brothers lawyers are going
to be wheeling out photos of Buster from during this time.
Maybe the one where he was at a wedding
and seemed to proudly be wearing a cummerbund
with his family's monogram on it,
or maybe all the photos he took with people
asking for selfies at bars.
And maybe they'll even use this call
between Buster and his father on October 24th, 2021, shortly after Ellick
was jailed for the first and last time, as it turns out.
No, it was a good trip. It was, you know, it's different going to Vegas with young children.
But, you know, everything was still fun. And then going to Sedona was a good time.
Did you get to gamble any?
Yeah, yeah, so I did go gambling and then the next day there was an article created
about how I'm misusing funds.
By gambling?
Yeah, someone took a picture of me and John Marvin in the casino.
You're kidding me.
Uh-uh. What a
fucking... are you kidding me? No. How do they recognize you? No. Man, I guess, I mean, I'm a
national figure, I think. I guess you're gonna attention to Hampton County and the Lowcountry
and South Carolina that even with this, I think Buster could argue that he was trying
to handle things as best as he could at the time.
That said, we have our answer on how Buster sees himself legally.
In this complaint, he says it explicitly, quote,
Plaintiff is a private figure who prior to the events giving rise to this action had not achieved
fame or notoriety to any extent and does not exert any influence or control over government affairs.
More on that after a quick break break and we'll be right back.

Buster's team cleaned that up in this filing.
They're now putting it on the media.
And they're establishing a narrative, a familiar narrative, of what happened to Stephen that
night.
Here's David with how he is phrasing it now.
On July 8, 2015, Stephen Smith, whose car had given out of gas, was walking along a rural road
in Hampton County, South Carolina. It was late at night. As he was walking along the road, he was allegedly struck by a part of a vehicle and
killed. News sources now report that his death is being considered by a statewide grand jury,
and the media has reported on individuals unrelated to Plaintiff allegedly being involved
with his death. The Plaintiff, even though he has been falsely accused
of harming Stephen Smith as described below,
has not been notified by any law enforcement entities
of any allegations against him related to Stephen Smith.
Obviously, that's the version of Stephen's death
that was put forth by the coroner and
medical examiner at the time, and Steven's family and others.
Maintain that Steven would have never put himself in a situation to get hit by a vehicle.
And obviously, you know that Steven's body was exhumed in 2023 and the report came out
that he was hit in the spot where he was found
and that it was likely an object protruding off a vehicle. Again, pointing to the side-view mirror
theory, which we take issue with, specifically because it's the theory attached to Sean Connolly,
who at the time had a flimsy side- mirror on his truck. And specifically because investigators, who know what bodies that get hit by cars look
like and what roadways, where incidents like that happen, look like, couldn't wrap their
heads around Steven being hit by a vehicle.
But we will argue that another day.
Let's talk about what Buster said there about news sources reporting.
He is right, but he originally attributed that
to the state grand jury.
Here's what he said last week, quote,
"'The parties will all rely on the exact same factual proof
to demonstrate who killed Mr. Smith.
And this proof is and will be entirely derived
from the exact same foundational series of events
from the days and moments leading up to Mr. Smith's death,
the ensuing investigation and origins of any rumor
connecting Mr. Murdoch to Mr. Smith's death,
to the initiation of grand jury proceedings
against individuals who are not Mr. Murdoch.
And last week, we asked the question about why he would know that for sure.
Was that leaked to him?
Or did he simply know because he didn't do it?
That said, even though Buster has denied involvement in this case,
he's never been formally cleared of that by SLED.
Meaning, no one has firmly said, officially anyway,
beyond Sandy's former attorney, Andy Savage,
that the Murdochs were not involved in this.
Which brings us to this.
Remember how we reported that Andy Savage's
voluntary pro bono involvement in Sandy's case was concerning?
How she was led to him at the advice of someone
who she didn't really know.
And how he immediately shut her down
and told her not to speak to the media
counter to what most attorneys in this situation
would say to a mother seeking justice.
Remember how our suspicions deepened when
Elick Murdoch brought this up on Buster, January seek out anything, any transcripts from it.
I don't know.
I know...
It ain't no big deal.
All in a scene, it's the same old thing.
Brooklyn told me some stuff that was on it and it was stuff that's wrong.
So it's just that same old...
Stephen Smith and Gloria and all that bullshit?
You know, I think it probably had to touch on that.
I think this one hit maybe a little bit more on the boat wreck.
I just know that there was some stuff that Brooklyn said that was said in the little
show and it's just stuff that's not important but it just shows that if they
believe, if they are willing to state that in fact that they just don't know what you're
saying because it's just stuff that's not true.
I understand. So are they still trying to say out there like there's some mystery surrounding
Gloria's death about how she died?
Saying what now? About how she died. Saying what now?
About how she died and they're still trying to make some innuendo there.
About Gloria?
Yeah.
I don't know.
Are they still saying anything about Stephen Smith, even though Andy Savage?
Yeah, I mean I don't think anybody...
He's still connecting to us? Yeah, I don't think anybody took the heart of Andy Savage.
Did they ever come out and say there's no connection?
No.
You don't know Andy Savage about?
No.
SLED has not released anything.
They didn't even release a statement about what was the most recent thing.
There was something, something came out not long ago talking about how there's been like
a breakthrough in evidence to do with like the homicides and Sled would come out and
issue a statement saying that there has been no further evidence like gathered.
So personally, I would not count on Sled to help in any way.
So is this just a concerned father lamenting about the blowback onto his son?
Or was LA counting on Andy Savage
in some way to help clear Buster's name?
Was he expecting that from Sled?
Okay, on the last few words Buster said
in that passage David read,
were that Buster has not been notified
by any law enforcement entities
of any allegations against him
related to Steven's death.
Which is likely true, but according to the case file, the Murdochs were aware that Buster
was being looked at.
And Buster was on our radar long before you were, you know?
Yes, sir.
The Murdochs know that.
They know that he's on our radar. So it's not
like what you're telling me is very valuable information and I'm glad that you're talking
to me. But I don't want you to think like, oh, I put Buster on the radar, therefore somebody
is going to be like, oh, it's your fault. No, you know, the Murdoch's already know.
But also, law enforcement officers are allowed to lie when trying to gather information. So who knows? It doesn't necessarily change Buster's assertion that he had never been
told by law enforcement that he was on their radar. We wanted to note that.
At least one of the investigators in this case
was telling people that the family knew for whatever that is worth.
The case file indicates that there were plans to talk to Buster, but there was no evidence
that that ever happened. Okay, so a few more things about Buster's amended complaint. He
went hard in the paint when it came to demonstrating the portrayal of his
family, accusing Warner Brothers of using this to implicate Buster in Steven's death. Here is David
with a roundup, of which we've edited down to just Buster's characterizations of what was said and
shown in the documentaries. Quote, plaintiff's family is an all-powerful legal dynasty in Hampton with improper influence on local law enforcement and the judicial system
End quote quote the Murdoch family has a sinister
depraved and menacing presence within the Hampton community end quote
menacing presence within the Hampton community." End quote.
Quote, the Murdock family has covered up
and will continue to cover up crimes
to preserve their family legacy.
End quote.
Quote, the Murdock family hold incredible power
and influence, were guarded by a great protector
and are never held accountable for their acts
because they are covered up by the
family and its influence." Community members were afraid of the Murdock family. The family lacked
empathy for others. One of the Murdock children, Plaintiff's deceased brother, would
brother would quote kill little baby animals and quote and quote could kill anyone and quotes
quote there would be no conviction in Stephen's death because Buster's family would cover it up due to its powerful influence the Murdock family would do it to preserve its reputation and legacy."
End quote.
Um, there are literally no words right now.
So I'm just going to say side eye emoji times a 100.
This is what I meant when I said Buster went bold because, well, one, we have our experience
alone reporting on this case
and also other cases in the Lowcountry talking to numerous law enforcement officers, lawyers,
insurance adjusters, Hampton County residents, former clients and colleagues who shared with
us their personal experiences with Ellic, Randolph, and other members of the family.
Two, there's all those people who bravely shared their personal stories about the Murdoch family
on the record in all the news reports
and documentaries that are out there.
Three, there's all those books that have been written
about the family, including one that calls Randolph
and his brother pedophiles.
Four, there's everything that went down
in the investigations of the murders,
the financial crimes, and the boat crash.
Meaning, if Warner Brothers has to show the court that their portrayals of Buster's family can be backed up,
there might be a line of reluctant, but subpoenaed, witnesses around that block.
So Buster says it's not true that the community is scared of his family,
that most or none of what David just read to you is true, and not to culturally appropriate here, but bless Buster's heart.
Is it? Does he? Does he maybe not know? Buster was considered the golden child, according
to sources who were close to the family. And he was very close to Maggie, and maybe because he himself understands
the concept of empathy, and maybe Maggie showed it too, he thinks that no one could possibly
think these things about the Murdochs and the community? Because again, in our experience,
talking to hundreds of people, that is the family's reputation. It doesn't mean that
there aren't people who don't think that they're good or kind or still consider them all friends
It's just there are people out there who say that but maybe that's the point
Maybe Buster is saying in your documentaries you reported on all these horrible things people are saying about my family
And now you want to talk about me in the context of Stephen's death. You want to then ask the question
Well, whoever could it have been
who killed Stephen after all of that? He says that they led the audience to make the logical
jump to Buster being involved. In his amended complaint, Buster also took issue with Warner
Brothers' use of stock video from virulent anti-LGBTQ demonstrations while a reporter talked about how hard it
would have been for Stephen to have been gay in the South. Buster said that was a foreshadowing
of Warner Brothers' later implication that Stephen was killed because of his sexual orientation
and that Buster was romantically tied to him. Quote,
Defendants had no reliable or credible information indicating that Mr. Smith's death
was the result of his sexual orientation or connected to plaintiff.
He also took issue with how they visually portrayed him.
We've already talked about the Netflix documentary with the background actor with red hair and
a baseball bat.
Here he says, quote, the series depicts side by side images on the screen of plaintiff and Mr. Smith, with the image of plaintiff purposefully arranged such that it appears he is looking in Mr. Smith's direction and laughing and concludes, but then later on, it just kept coming up Murdoch's Murdoch's Murdoch's and then everything was just like swept under the rug.
Finally, in the amended complaint Buster points out that the defendants did not include,
I guess what would be called exculpatory evidence in a criminal case. He says they didn't mention
that Randy was Joel Smith's attorney at the time of Stephen's death, but Sandy does say that in the
HBO version of the documentary anyway. Buster also says that the documentaries failed to mention that there was evidence of a hit-and-run.
And that's a tricky one because the only ones saying it was a hit-and-run were the ones not investigating the case officially,
like Hampton County Police, Sled, The Corner, and The Medical Examiner.
Buster points out that the documentaries didn't mention that the case file included other
potential people of interest.
And I think he means Mark Bickhart, who claimed to be Stephen's boyfriend at the time, a
man that Stephen had gone to see on Hilton Head Island right before his death, and then
Sean Connolly and Patrick Wilson, which we've reported on many times in the past.
So this is going to get really interesting. And we're choosing to remain optimistic right now, despite those bombshells Eric dropped
on us in Cup of Justice, which, like we said, sounded awfully familiar.
Information appearing out of thin air that might or might not be coordinated in an effort
to, I don't know, finally clear Buster's name or help Buster with his lawsuit.
Hmm.
This is why we do what we do.
Because we shouldn't have to feel cynical about this.
It should be seen as hopeful.
But it's really hard to trust a system
given everything that we have learned
over the past six years
about how things really go down in the low country.
Regardless, Buster's case deals
with some very important issues in media
because it's unavoidable.
Buster's name was mentioned in the case files repeatedly
by people who said they heard it
was him.
Rumor, and that's how it should have been reported.
Generally speaking, the media typically doesn't get to see this much of a case file in an
open investigation, where law enforcement is documenting its process in terms of who
they question and why.
But the media did get to see this, all of this, because the highway patrol released
it for some unknown reason.
And why isn't Buster suing them for that?
He could have legally cited a FOIA exemption there and chose not to.
That said, media had the right to report on it.
It seems pretty clear that it was and is in public interest.
So the question here is likely going to be how far.
How far can true crime documentaries go in how they illustrate what they are reporting?
In our opinion, it's a fair question to raise about how an investigation is conducted and to provide
important context that supports why these questions are being asked.
But drawing a conclusion about a person committing murder despite them not being charged in said
crime?
That is much, much trickier.
Buster says that is what these documentaries did to him. And the documentaries are saying, no sir, we did not.
So shifting gears to the Micah France's story,
we have a doozy of a 911 call for you from John Paul Miller.
But first, a quick note about the Chris Skinner case.
As you know, Chris, the quadriplegic husband of a woman J.P. Miller was allegedly having
an affair with at the time, died in September 2021 after falling into his neighborhood pool.
The death was ruled an accident, seemingly based on Susie Skinner's account of it.
Susie Skinner, who was not there at the time.
But videos of Chris's death seemed to show
him intentionally propelling himself into the water. In other words, it seems like he killed
himself. We've seen several people online upset about Myrtle Beach Police Department announcing
that they had reopened Chris's case earlier this year, only to then immediately announce that they had closed it with no change
in their original determination. Which, what a bunch of dodo birds. Why were they even looking
into this case again? No one was suggesting that this was a murder, at least no one on this team.
And we're the team that called for the coroner to take another look at the case because we think the death certificate could be wrong. We just want to assure people that it's okay. Ignore Myrtle
Beach police trying to act like they're useful in this case. The coroner is still looking
into Chris's death and that is what matters. There are a few reasons why we think it's
important that it gets looked into again and that Chris's death certificate get changed if the coroner sees what the rest of us
seem to be seeing on the video. One, according to court documents Chris had
allegedly told JP Miller to stay away from his wife shortly before his death.
Two, though Chris's probate file doesn't list any life insurance policies that he
held, we don't know for sure whether Suzy held a policy on Chris.
And if so, we don't know when that policy was taken out.
And that is important because if Chris's death was a suicide and there is a policy and it
was less than two years old at the time of Chris's death, it's highly likely that it
would not have been paid out in the circumstance
of suicide.
So if that is the case, I imagine the insurance company would want to take a gander there.
And three, which takes us actually back to point one.
If Chris killed himself, then that is very problematic for JP Miller because according
to testimony recently in Magistrate Court, Suzy and JP are, as Judy
Gemstone would put it, girlfriends and boyfriends.
And this would mean that both of their spouses died by suicide and under mysterious circumstances.
And that would, or at least should, factor into whatever charges the FBI might be considering
against JP.
And it might even lead to a few wrongful death cases.
Who knows?
More on JP after a quick break.
Okay, so we got another absurd 911 call from liar liar pants on fire JP Miller, and whew, this one from St. Patrick's Day is a doozy.
I would say I have secondhand embarrassment for both JP and Horry County police from this
phone call, but honestly, I have none left
after almost a year of listening to these doofuses
continue to entertain JP's antics while wasting tax dollars.
At this point, I'm honestly just worried
about what JP thinks that he can get away with next.
So to set the scene, I have to remind you
of where JP is in this moment on March 17th,
2025, and how he went from the almighty PJP with more than 700 church members just a year
ago to a paranoid pastor preaching in a strip mall while he's being investigated by the
FBI. Yes, his new church is in a strip mall off
Highway 17 in Myrtle Beach. More on that in a minute. I would normally say, oh how the mighty
have fallen. But like Elick Murdoch, JP was never really mighty. And Micah has shown us that in the
past 11 months since her death. She showed us that JP never wanted an equal partner.
He wanted a wife who he could control.
Micah showed us that JP started pursuing her
when she was just a 15-year-old babysitter,
and he was a married father and pastor
at the church she thought was a part of her destiny.
Micah showed us how JP allegedly pressured her
into getting plastic surgery before their wedding
and how he allegedly took advantage of that surgery
to gain mental control over Micah,
convincing her that she had suddenly been diagnosed
with bipolar and schizophrenia
from her reaction to her surgery,
a diagnosis that not a single medical professional
that we have spoken to believes could be true.
This diagnosis put Micah at a disadvantage
in her marriage from day one.
She said that she was abused sexually, spiritually,
mentally and physically throughout the course
of their seven-year marriage.
Before it all came tumbling down, JP presented himself as a former bad boy pastor who found
Jesus and worked hard to build solid rock into a thriving Christian community. But really,
in this last year, Micah has shown us that JP was just a bad apple from a bad seed,
a man who built his church off the back
of his creepy criminal father,
who taught him how to weaponize religion,
forgiveness and Jesus and take from the most vulnerable.
Ironically, JP brought all of this unwanted sunlight
on himself from the moment when he announced that
Micah died by suicide before her death was ruled a suicide. In that sermon, J.P.
Miller, of course, asked his congregation to pray for him. And if there is a God, he
absolutely did not answer that prayer because J.P JP's last year was most definitely his Pastor Disaster Era.
JP Miller could not survive the sunlight brought on by Micah and her army of supporters.
From the tabloids around the world covering his affair with Suzy, to the TikTokers and
YouTubers exposing every rotten inch of this churchy business bro.
The world overwhelmingly rejected everything about JP Miller and supported everything about
Micah.
That support for Micah was evident outside of his churchy business in Myrtle Beach.
Every Sunday following Micah's death, where an army of Justice for Micah supporters protested with purple shirts
and signs calling for coercive control legislation, accountability in Micah's case, and more support
for victims in Horry County where women are chronically mistreated by the police.
Like I said, it has been a year for PJP, perhaps the first year of his life where karma has come
back swinging.
He lost custody of his children.
He has been charged and arrested with assault for confronting a protester.
He has lost the vast majority of his church members, down from about 700 last year to
roughly a few dozen loyalists remaining.
J.P. Miller is now at the center of an ongoing FBI investigation involving the circumstances
that led to Micah Miller's death, a place where no churchy business bro, especially
with a bar business on the side, ever wants to be.
J.P. has tried to gain control of his spiraling reputation on multiple fronts in the past
year — from starting and deleting a TikTok account where he promised to prove that Micah
really did kill herself, but instead of proving anything, he just ended up deleting it.
To that strange one-hour NewsNation interview where he dodged every important question, showed
zero remorse for his wife's death, bashed his wife's family and friends, and
wouldn't stop touching his nose. PJP is in his pastor disaster era and we love
that for him. Oh wait, there's more. At the beginning of this year, JP and his
silly lawyer Russell B. Long,
pronounced Russell B wrong, announced a quest
to fight back at the protesters
and reclaim JP's narrative and Solid Rock's reputation.
Since January, 34 lawsuits and dozens of restraining orders
were filed against protesters by JP
and Solid Rock Church members.
And in the words of Eric Bland this week on Cup of Justice,
boy, did he open a can of whoop-ass on himself.
Not only have most of those lawsuits already been dismissed and settled by him,
and guys, it is remarkably absurd that he ended up having to pay several of the
people who he was suing. But the three remaining lawsuits that are now on the circuit court,
which were filed by three protesters, the ones who used the GoFundMe money that we promoted on this
podcast to hire a lawyer to fight JP, those are actually counter-suits, meaning he is exposed
and he could end up paying well over five figures,
all for his silly little attempt to silence protesters
while abusing the court system.
Oh, and that's not all.
The cherry on top of JP's pastor disaster era
came when Jane Doe One filed a massive lawsuit
against JP, his father, and their churchy businesses for alleged sexual abuse.
The lawsuit inspired another victim, Jane Doe Two, to file her lawsuit with similar sexual
assault and abuse allegations against JP, Wayne Miller, and their churchy businesses. But the best part of all is that Jane Doe One
and Jane Doe Two are being represented
by two of the most fierce and ruthless attorneys
in South Carolina, Randy Hood and Mark Tensley.
Mark Tensley eats men like Ellic Murdoch for breakfast,
as we all saw in the Murdoch trial.
I cannot wait to see the hornet's nest.
These two are kicking in the Miller's crumbling
churchy kingdom.
It's going to be great.
Safe to say, if there is a God,
he did not answer JP's prayers in the last year.
And for that, we are thankful.
From where we sit, after reading thousands of police reports,
medical reports, sermons, transcripts,
court documents, and newspaper, J.P. Miller finally got the year that he deserved.
Anyways, after all of that, you would think that this man would lay low.
You would think that there would be a voice in his head that would say, J.P.
The plan is not working right now, so maybe just stop with the whole trying to silence people who just want justice for your wife
and just be quiet for a minute.
Maybe spend time away from the people who worship you and take a step back to maybe
see the mess that you have made.
And maybe just be glad that the cops have not once charged you with filing a false police report for
the more than 60 times that you and your churchy friends have called them in the past year.
Yes, 60.
But no, JP still treats Horry County and Myrtle Beach Police like his personal secret service
team, who he can call whenever he feels slightly uncomfortable.
And of course he does, because why not?
Imagine if every woman in Myrtle Beach called the police every time they felt threatened
and police treated them just like they do with JP Miller, with respect and decency and
believing them.
And not like they treated Micah in the months leading up to her death,
by labeling her as a 1096, aka mental health subject, and dismissing her every claim.
So, on March 17th, JP Miller called the police on two protesters who were in the parking lot of his
new mini-mall churchy business Mercy Church Ministries.
Ory County Dispatch, this is Amy.
Um, Highway 17 bypass south.
I'm standing at our home school. We have a little home school thing for the parents.
Anyway, there's two ladies that are outside the storefront.
They were acting crazy and videotaping us and the kids.
What city are you in? There's two ladies that are outside the storefront. They're ratting crazy and videotaping us and the kids.
We're in Owy County.
We're right in front of them.
We're not in the city.
It limits the Myrtle Beach, but we're right on the edge of it, on the bypass.
Owy County.
CA-23.
We're near Palmetto Point Boulevard, I guess, near that light.
Copy.
Are they still out there?
Yes, they are.
And I'm inside.
I can see through the window.
And they're just crazy.
I went to get there.
I went to videotape their license plates so we can get to who they are.
And they just started screaming even louder.
What's your first impression?
Okay.
We have to set the scene here because I don't know how JP, who is being accused in multiple
lawsuits of sexually assaulting children years ago,
is telling police with a straight face, with no irony in his voice at all, that he has a place
at the strip mall off a frontage road on Highway 17 where kids are being homeschooled. As if his
presence around students isn't alarming enough, at least according to what we've read so far in these lawsuits.
Even without that factored in, that strip mall does not look like a great location for
school unless you want your kids to get diplomas in tetanus shots and Keno.
So remember how JP Miller was apparently playing Churchie Business musical chairs a few months
ago, specifically right around the time the FBI raided his home in a very public, very large, and very embarrassing way.
Remember how he moved Solid Rock Church services to different locations, sort of
hopscotch-ing around? One of them was literally named the Rat Hole, and the
other was in another sketchy strip mall inside a throwback MMA gym. And remember how he started two new churchy business LLCs?
Well, I guess one was technically started
by his very elderly granny.
And that one was Mercy Church Ministries.
Well, this 911 call came from Mercy Church Ministries.
And let us explain briefly
why this new churchy business looks super sketch. Mercy Church Ministries
was incorporated with the South Carolina Secretary of State's
Office on November 11, 2024, which was just 10 days after the
FBI raided JP Miller's Coldwater Circle home. And the
registered agent of the church was listed as Molly Fleming. Of
course, with a bit of digging, we quickly realized that Molly
Fleming is the name of JP's maternal grandmother, even though it was spelled wrong in the initial
Secretary of State filing. Remember, JP's daddy seems to be a fan of the misspelled
name in formal filings approach to post-scandal living, so it wasn't exactly surprising to
see that. We requested the payment receipts for the filing and reported what we found in True
Sunlight podcast episode 79 and began posting about it on social media.
And it was then that JP and his associates began updating the filings in what seemed
like an attempt to fix the errors that we were pointing out between a non-existent address, which got updated to a Pro-Packinship,
as well as the misspelling of Molly's name, which was corrected from M-O-L-L-I-E to Molly
with a Y.
And after a couple of weeks of using a P.O. box at Pro-Packinship, the registered agent
and registered address were changed again on January 7th, and they were changed to a third party registered agent in Charleston, which is what people do when they don't want you to know they're connected to the business entity.
And think about that trajectory for a second, because did JP graduate from home school in a weird strip mall?
The goal appears to have been, it can't be connected to JP, right?
So from where we sit, the goal appeared to have been, this can't be connected to JP.
But then he started with his own Nana and ended it with a third party agent. That literally
might be the big boy business equivalent of a kid putting a blanket over his head and legit thinking that he's now invisible.
So okay JP, you're a scary ghost.
Oooh.
According to property records, on November 20th, 2024, Mercy Church Ministries paid $155,000
for a storefront in a run-down strip mall on the Highway 17 bypass.
The address of the new building was 4869 Highway 17 bypass
south. That is the same address that JP used when he began filing his few dozen protestor lawsuits
the end of January. It's also where the protestors have been each Sunday since JP began having
service there after he sold the building at 803 Howard Avenue in Market
Common for $2.15 million in February.
So in the span of a few months, JP moved his churchy business from a sprawling picturesque
property in the quaint Market Common neighborhood that his dad passed on to JP's church, by
the way, sometime after his dad's own scandals, to a $155,000 barebones
storefront and like barebones in a starving, been through it sort of way.
This isn't chic minimalism that we're talking about here.
And that storefront used to be a salon.
And Google Maps Street View did not do this strip mall any favors to make it look, I don't
know, like an appropriate place where you'd want your kids to hang out with an accused
child sex offender.
Literally from the street view staring at this strange aqua-roofed storefront sits the
exact type of vehicle one would picture when they hear the words creepy kidnapper van.
Then there's an enormous sign that says,
Hollywood Bar Grill.
There's some store called Golf Nickers.
There's a Bear Wax and Beyond Salon.
And guys, I'm still describing the very same parking lot
as J.B.'s church.
Now hop on a scooter from there and press the gas for approximately 10
seconds down frontage road and you will land directly in front of Wayne Miller's churchy business,
All Nations it's called. And it's sandwiched naturally between a title loan shop and a crematory.
Yes, a place where bodies are cremated. Great place to homeschool children, right? Now, the
children thing bothers us because witnesses told us that there were no
children in the building at the time of JP's call and it sounds like JP is
possibly lying to police again to prompt them into responding and be at his
beckon call. He knows there's no legal recourse to people in public filming him and some other adults
from a public parking lot, but filming kids as they're in school does make that situation
different doesn't it?
And again, I cannot believe JP still feels comfortable doing all this and that there
are absolutely no consequences for him crying wolf over and over and over again to police.
So will someone at the police department please hand this guy a mirror and say, it's you,
you're the problem JP.
Like I said, JP has a history of lying to the police.
Remember when he told police Micah was homicidal and suicidal and he got her committed because
she clearly said something that worried him.
Remember when he told police that Micah was crazy and that she was lying about
them being separated and that her car was marital property.
Remember when he claimed that Micah had stolen money from Solid Rock?
And let's not get started on the litany of lies he has told police and at
least one judge about things that he says the protesters have done and said.
Anyway, this time JP claimed to have an actual witness on the scene ready to speak with police.
Can I have a witness here that saw the whole thing?
Alright, give me just a second.
I've got construction work that was helping us.
One text five, go ahead.
Copy, give me just a second, I'm on the phone.
And it's just been a verbal so far.
I'm sorry, say that again.
It's just been a verbal so far.
I'm sorry. Say that again.
It's just been verbal so far.
They haven't done anything physical, correct?
Correct. But they are videotaping our children,
which is weird, so we can't come outside.
How old do they look, 20s, 30s?
How old are those ladies? 30s, 40s?
All of them 40s, 70s?
Yeah, 40s 40s 40s
Maybe 50s 140 150 and I have the light and play to one the other one
One like this plate is um
And it's a white
CX man, it's a white. All-9. It's a white.
All right.
You said a white.
And the other one is a white Fusion.
She's standing in front of her license plate.
And won't let us take a video of it.
Okay.
All right.
So I have this in.
We're going to send some officers out for you.
If anything changes, just give us a call back, okay?
Okay.
Thank you so much. Bye-bye.
He said videotaping our children. Our. That should send chills down parents' spines.
The most frustrating part of this call is that Horry County again took this fool of
a man seriously, and they apparently sent an officer to the scene.
Remember how Micah begged police
to do a wellness check on JP before her death
because she was worried that strangers were in her house
and what they could do with her laptop?
Remember her begging the police to believe her
when she said that he was dangerous,
and her loved ones were worried about her
because of JP's escalating and erratic behavior?
Remember how she told police about how JP's son,
who is currently facing a domestic violence charge,
was following her around town?
Remember how she also said JP's sister's baby
was staying with them
and she was worried about that baby's safety?
Remember how none of that
amounted to any real response or investigation from any Horry County
police? And yet again, here's another scenario when JP tells Horry County
police to jump for him and they say, how high? According to the CAD report, police
responded to the mini-mall and told JP that
people were allowed to film in the parking lot, and they told him if he had a problem with that,
he needed to work with the mini-mall owners on privatizing the parking lot. Which, I'm glad they
didn't take this stupid matter any more seriously and didn't open it up for further investigation. Yay for that. But I have a lot of problems with
this. One, the CAD report listed this as an emergency situation. Can you imagine how many
women across Horry County were experiencing bigger emergencies that day that they could have used
police backup for? If every woman who felt uncomfortable
due to a man's unwanted presence near them
called the police and police said,
absolutely ma'am, that's an emergency.
Could you imagine that?
Why is it that men's comfort is constantly prioritized
over women's safety in Horry County?
Which brings me to my next issue.
Two, the quote unquote problem listed in the CAD report is literally, quote,
two females arguing and acting crazy outside.
It says that, and it clarifies that it's simply a verbal argument,
which is not a crime, but triggering to read as a woman who is constantly
called crazy while calling out the behavior of bad men.
Which brings me to my next point.
There is no follow-up listed in the report checking to see if any children were there.
If police cared about public safety like they are being paid to provide. Shouldn't it concern them in the least bit that a pastor, who is currently being sued
for multiple alleged sexual assaults, apparently is running some kind of mini-mall home school?
If there were no children on the scene, why wasn't JP questioned about that and reminded
by police that it is illegal to file a false police
report. He escalated the need for police by claiming that these so-called
children were in the building with him. Why wouldn't they follow up on that at
all? And finally, this is yet another encounter where Horry County Police
emboldened JP to continue to use their power for his personal protection.
He knows, especially by now, that they are not following up to disprove any of his claims.
He knows exactly what to say and how to say it to get police to respond in his war to
silence the Justice for Micah protesters.
And what is stopping him?
Nothing. Public humiliation stopping him? Nothing.
Public humiliation has not stopped him.
Legal defeat has not stopped him.
A 24 officer FBI raid on his home hasn't stopped him.
Two major lawsuits haven't stopped him.
A night in jail hasn't stopped him.
I say this to anyone around JP Miller and especially to the protesters.
Please be careful.
Videotape absolutely every moment and stay within your lines to protest.
The police cannot be trusted to correct J.P. Miller's behavior.
He has learned that he can lie to police, or at least it looks like that to us.
And we worry about what he will do next with that. He has learned that he can lie to police, or at least it looks like that to us, and
we worry about what he will do next with that.
We are frustrated as both police departments that failed to help Micah in those three desperate
months leading up to her death still have not recognized their mistakes, publicly at
least.
What a world of difference would it make
for Horry County or Myrtle Beach police
to advocate for coercive control training
and policy changes to save women dying in slow motion
in front of them the way that Micah did.
Now, I need to go back to this phone call
that was made just two months before Micah's death
and a phone call that will always make me wonder,
what if one officer just listened to her?
What if one officer heard her cries for help,
and at the very least, opened an investigation?
What if one person of authority treated her with an ounce of the decency
and respect that they
still provide her husband.
What if they picked up JP the way they picked up Micah that night and showed JP that two
could play that game?
Hi, I have somebody who I believe to be in a manic state and is a direct danger to the
people in his household and himself and others.
I need an immediate pickup, not the 72 hour pickup that a spouse can initiate.
I need this to be a little quicker because he is a flight risk.
There's been domestic violence. He put his hands on me. Um, and I need an
immediate pickup, not a 72 hour where he can flee the county. Okay, what's the address?
Where I think he should be.
Water, which is one word, cold water.
Circle?
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, 29588.
And who is he to you?
Can you say that one more time? Who is he to you? Can you say that one more time?
Who is he to you honey?
He's my husband.
And when he put his hands on you?
Yeah, he tried to front punch me, but thankfully I was standing up so he made contact, but it didn't knock the wind out of me like it should have.
And he pushed me down in front of thousands of people at Disney World and so
yeah and his best friend even saw that happen. He slapped drinks right out of my hand.
When did he put his hands around your throat?
That was before I got I was in the hospital after that from just a panic attack of what was happening.
That was about a week ago, but I just got out of the hospital a couple days ago.
And when I got out, he was impersonating my identity with the phone that he had in his hands.
I didn't even have my phone or anything. And he's texting everybody. He hacked my social media.
And he's got guns in the home and a baby staying there right now.
Or that baby is going to be at that house where he's used guns as intimidation in
the past, where he's put his hands on me.
And he's on an anti-psychotic medicine that he's misusing.
And I even got off the phone with the pharmacy.
He didn't pick up his latest prescription, which he should have on January 3rd.
And I believe at this point, based on the people that he's come in contact with,
some of them reported to me that based on how he was talking,
they feared he had killed and buried me somewhere."
We can't stop thinking if they just listened to her then.
But no, Horry County Police identified Micah's cries for help as, quote, a civil issue.
They identified her as a 1096 in this CAD report and advised her that JP had evicted
her from her home.
And then they wrote,
Nothing further.
Micah's blood is forever stained on their hands.
The question is, how many more women will they do this to
before something changes? And how much longer will they continue to waste
resources on JP's absurd complaints before they stand up to him? Stay tuned,
stay pesky, and stay in the sunlight. True Sunlight is a Lunashark production created by me, Mandy Matney.

I know that we talk about a lot of horrible attorneys on this show, but we want to highlight
one attorney who has always done the right thing for us since we
have known him. He has helped us secure the right partners at the right terms. But now, he's doing
so much more. Greg Finch from Bowen-Fallagin in Savannah, Georgia has given us a great opportunity
this year to do our part to help knock out cancer. This year, we've joined Greg's fundraising team to help raise
funds and awareness through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Greg, tell us why that is such
a big deal. So what does LLS do and why do we need your help? LLS is the preeminent organization
that helps raise funds, awareness, and performs research to fight against blood cancers. We all
know someone who has been impacted by blood cancer, whether a parent, child,
a loved one, someone who had to go through the fight of their life to fend off blood
cancer.
This is a scary condition that affects all of us, and I've seen firsthand from the
kids who have fought blood cancer just how important the villages and support teams around
them are.
No one should fight this fight without a village
and without the best chance of survival." You may know one of our dearest friends
and premium member, Tammy Daniels. Well, her dad Larry started one of our favorite island escapes,
Coco's on the Beach, where we hosted our Lunashark Premium Beach Bash last year.
But Larry is currently battling leukemia, and we are proud to help fund life-saving
research through LLS.
Until May 10th, we will be sharing Greg's fundraising page at greggslls.com.
Donate what's on your heart to help in this fight because every single dollar counts.
