Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey My Mom's Basement listeners, you can find our episodes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube, and Prime members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. This week, I have Cain Velasquez rejoining the show. He was on the show a few weeks ago talking about, you know, his wrestling debut and his transition from mixed martial arts to wrestling. And he was in AAA back then. Well, he's in WWE right now, if you weren't aware, and he has a match with Brock Lesnar at Crown Jewel for Brock Lesnar's WWE Championship coming up. So it's, you know, obviously a huge change from where we were even a month ago for Kane. But joining him is one of my favorite wrestlers of all time. If you are a grapple fuck, if you are a from-the-top-rope fan, you know that I have talked about this guy more than i've talked about almost anyone in the world he was my favorite wrestler to such a degree
Starting point is 00:00:51 that i dressed up as him for halloween i dressed my dogs up as him i owned all of his t-shirts not even just the official wwe ones but the bootleg jersey shore airbrush ones as well. Ladies and gentlemen, joining Cain Velasquez on the show this week is Ray Mysterio, a top ten wrestler of all time, a top three wrestler in my personal favorites ever. For me, I go Daniel Bryan one, Shawn Michaels two, Ray Mysterio three. Since I saw Ray Mysterio come out in that Daredevil gear at WrestleMania 19, I was hooked. I was just, oh my god, I cannot believe that the coolest wrestler I've ever seen is dressed up as the superhero that I'm so into right now. I was so into Daredevil. I owned the VHS that came with the bonus Evanescence music video at the end of the credits.
Starting point is 00:01:40 It was a whole thing. But this was such a surreal interview for me that when I told my family who I had on the show, they were blown away. They were like, oh, my God, are you going to be incredibly nervous to talk to Ray Mysterio? Dude, basically your hero. He really was. And he is going forward because I'll tell you what, after spending this interview with him and the few minutes I spent with Ray afterwards, he is one of those people that encapsulates the opposite of never meet your heroes. He was the hero that you want to meet. I think Sam Roberts, I posted an Instagram, you know, saying I met my hero today and Sam Roberts commented and he said, Ray is the exact kind of hero that you want to meet. And he could not be more correct. Ray was the coolest dude imaginable, and I'm excited to get into this interview. Before we get into that, though, as always, I got to remind you, SimpliSafe. Our friends at SimpliSafe are keeping the lights on
Starting point is 00:02:35 at this podcast, and we really appreciate that. You want to know why they're keeping the lights on? They want to spread the good word of their program. A recent Gallup survey shows that Americans worry more about burglary than almost any other crime, more than mugging, more than terrorism, more than car theft and murder. I'll tell you what, since I started doing these ad reads, I started worrying a little bit more. It started putting it in the back of my mind. Man, what if someone breaks into my home? Well, I'll tell you what, the good thing is, nobody's going to be breaking into my home. You want to know why? Because SimpliSafe sent me a package.
Starting point is 00:03:07 And in this package was the easiest to install SimpliSafe security system I've ever seen. It took me two seconds. You know, all these other home security companies, they don't make it easy. They prevent you from getting their security systems just because they're confusing to install or they're too expensive month to month. It's a hassle. This, that, the next thing. That's why SimpliSafe is my top choice, though. That's not the case for SimpliSafe. I set it up in two seconds, like I said. It's very simple. There's over 2 million burglaries reported every year. That's one every 13 seconds. You don't want your apartment, your condo, your home to be the one
Starting point is 00:03:42 without this, and then you get added to the list. You get lost in the shuffle. It's not even like a big deal. You tell your friends, if someone broke into my house, they're like, yeah, big deal. Over $2 million a year, one every 13 seconds, Bob. And the average loss in one of those burglaries? Over $2,000. You know what you could buy for over $2,000? A lot of shit. A lot of toys. Tell you what, a lot of toys. If you're listening to this podcast, you're a nerd like me. A lot of Funko Pops. SimpliSafe protects your whole home, every window, room, and door with 24-7 monitoring for just a fraction of the cost. Their police dispatch is also up to 3.5 times faster than all of the other home security systems because they use video verification technology. Remember, there's no contract, hidden fees, or fine print.
Starting point is 00:04:21 It's designed to blend right into your home. There's no wires. There's no drilling. It's easy to order, easy to set up, usually in under an hour. Like I said, it took me way less than an hour. Prices are always fair and honest. Around the clock monitoring is just $15 a month. You visit simplisafe.com slash mom right now. You get free shipping and a 60-day risk-free trial. You've got nothing to lose. Go now. Be sure you visit simplisafe.com slash mom so they know our show sent you. That's simplisafe.com slash mom. Coming up this weekend, we got UFC 244. That is probably the card that I'm looking forward to more than any other this year, mostly because it's at the Garden. It's right down the block from the office. We've got the baddest motherfucker in the game championship in the main event, Nate Diaz versus Jorge Masvidal. This weekend,
Starting point is 00:05:09 it looked like maybe it was off. Nate Diaz put out a statement being like, listen, I popped a USADA test. I'm not coming. I'm not on steroids. These assholes are saying I'm on steroids. Dana White clarified that very quickly. In under 48 hours, he was like, listen, nobody failed anything. There was an abnormality. The fight's still on. Everything is perfect. We know Nate isn't taking steroids. No offense to Nate Diaz. If he was taking steroids, his body wouldn't look the way it looks. He's got a, you know, obviously he's in great shape and he's in tremendous shape. I'm picking him in the main event this weekend. But Nate Diaz is not a body that's on steroids. The little vegan stoner Nate Diaz, no thank you. The guy that's accused
Starting point is 00:05:45 everyone of being on steroids for years, yeah, he got pretty much so angry that someone even suggested that he was on steroids that he was willing to turn down the biggest payday of his career just to clear his name basically. And it got me thinking, if steroids were presented to me and you didn't have to do the needle, I'm not a big needle guy. I know I have tattoos. I feel like that's different. That's not like a regular needle. I had an endoscopy last week. I know I'm going on a tangent here, but I don't care. I had an endoscopy last week.
Starting point is 00:06:10 They put the needle in my, the guy was like checking my normal vein in the pit of your elbow. And he's like, ah, this one's not that good. And he just stuck it right in a vein in my hand, the back of my hand. It hurt like a motherfucker. So I was thinking, if steroids didn't need needles, if it was just like a pill, would I take it? The answer is yes. Duh. I would love to look like a superhero. I think I would look like, it would be like Steve Rogers. I look like Steve Rogers right now before the super serum. If I started taking steroids, man, I don't need to take no USADA test. I don't need to pass anything. And if I were to take any steroids, they would be
Starting point is 00:06:42 steroids for my eyes because my eyes are horrible. I'll tell you why. I spend way too much time looking at my digital screens. For me, I know I spend hours at a time looking at my screens. Between my phone, being at work, binging new shows, playing video games, I just got that new Call of Duty, scrolling right before bed. That is why I started wearing MVMT's Everscroll Blue Light Filtering Glasses. They're built to protect your eyes from blue light that's known to cause eye strain, discomfort, and poor sleeping patterns. I'm out. improve your focus, your mental clarity, sharpen your vision, uses out the ass for these things. There's a ton of different fashion forward frames to choose from as well. They don't look like any
Starting point is 00:07:30 of the other computer frame glasses out there. They take MVMT's best-selling glasses frames, so the regular ones, literally the shit that everyone is buying, they take those, they just add a blue light filter to them. You don't have to sacrifice style for functionality. They just look like regular glasses. There's also no yellow tint that you find in other blue light blockers. Pick from round frames, clear frames, colored frames, etc. MVMT selection is always expanding with new traditional and fashion forward styles to choose from. Everscroll blue light filter and glasses start at just $65 and whether you're at the office, scrolling through your phone, or unwinding after a long day, Everscroll glasses have got you covered.

Let's get into this interview with Cain Velasquez and the one, the only,
Starting point is 00:08:28 Rey Mysterio. We'll start with Cain, because like I just mentioned, you are completely changed from where you were in life, I don't know, three weeks ago, a month ago? How did this all come about? How did you link up with the WWE? This has been going on for quite
Starting point is 00:08:43 a while. I first went to a elimination chamber match with daniel cormier and like kind of reignited my love for pro wrestling um and my first step was like hey let's see if i could even do it so went to the performance center for about a week trained and just really liked the uh the atmosphere really liked the training um and you know i was talking to the wwe for a while there you know to try to do something and um it didn't really work out yet so i did the two triple a shows yep um and they know that i was serious and really want to do this for, you know, just for the long haul. So, yeah, we got something, you know, together.
Starting point is 00:09:30 And from what I understand, this whole deal came together from the phone call to the debut in like 24 hours. It was something rapid like that when you showed up on SmackDown. Is that true? It was throughout that whole week of just finally getting the negotiations done. But I mean, what really sparked it in that moment was watching Raw when Brock ended up hurting Dominik and ended up hurting Rey as well. I've seen Brock for a while in the WWE and
Starting point is 00:10:05 just the way he carries himself and does everything. He's a bully. Bullies need to get hit in the mouth so that's something here to do. And how did you guys link up? When did you first hear that you would be working with Cain Velasquez? Someone coming from outside of the WWE.
Starting point is 00:10:22 I was actually really excited when I had heard that he had been up at the Performance Center, you know, because I've been a fan of Kane's. Yeah, you're a fight fan, correct? Yes, big fight fan, and I saw Kane take
Starting point is 00:10:38 Brock down, and I was, like, this was maybe two years ago, since he went to the PC Center? Yep. Yeah, I was like, man was maybe two years ago since you went to the PC Center? Yeah. I was like, man, if that fight ever happens in a wrestling ring, Kane and Brock, I'd say that's a seller. So you guys weren't familiar with each other? You guys didn't know each other personally before you got linked together?
Starting point is 00:10:58 I had met Kane in Mexico City. We were doing a media day. And we said hi to each other. And we took pictures. And we connected then you know uh this was probably about three years ago wow yeah so um um again you know uh i thought it would it would be a really great attraction yeah especially having it in the octagon now coming to the ring it's an interesting like toss up and what did what was your reaction
Starting point is 00:11:23 when you found out you would be working with ray mysterio like do you remember who told you that you know you're going to be working with the most legendary luchador of all time for me just awesome you know and just um you know proud and just just blessed that that i do get to you know work and and just kind of you know learn from ray as well um i've gone over to san diego and trained with him um as well and um no man just ray's Diego and trained with him as well. No, man, just Ray's been welcoming me with open arms and it's just been amazing. And I did see you guys were posting pictures
Starting point is 00:11:52 training together. What has the training process been like when you're actually in ring getting to show some stuff? Have you been teaching wrestling? What's your experience in actually being a teacher? The only person I've taught is my son. I figured, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Yeah, two years ago since he started training. The fundamentals, just the way I was taught, which is very different on how they train upcoming wrestlers nowadays. It's just a different style of training but with Kane with Kane I mean there's really not much I can teach him because he knows all the fundamentals man he comes from a wrestling background amateur wrestling and his discipline is just on point man you know what are the differences that you just mentioned from when you were coming up and they were training you to how they train new wrestlers now I don't know. I guess for me, it was just much more harder. It wasn't as soft, I should say.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Is it more of the horror stories that we hear of bumping on concrete and stuff like that? Not even that. And again, it might just be me taking it in from that time because, again, I was eight years old. That's crazy, again, I was eight years old. That's crazy, man. I was eight years old, jumping in the ring with 18-year-olds.
Starting point is 00:13:11 So maybe because I was a kid, everything was much harder. The bumps were harder. The chops were harder. The slams were harder. But I took appreciation to the sport like you have no idea. And how did you feel when your son Dominic
Starting point is 00:13:24 told you that he would follow in your footsteps? Were you worried as a parent or were you like, this is awesome, I got a new tag team partner? It never crossed my mind to worry. Not until now. Sorry. At the time, no. And he was playing football throughout his school years up until high school. Finished high school and never once did I
Starting point is 00:13:46 hey, come on, let's go train. Let's go try it in the ring. Never. If it comes natural, it comes natural. I never thought it would come. Not until he was 19 is when he told me, Dad, I would love to try and break into the business.
Starting point is 00:14:03 See if I got what it takes. I was like, wow, that's cool. But if I probably would have pushed him, it probably wouldn't have been the same. So I'm glad that it came out of him. He wanted to do it, and now I'm here for him. And now you're here also for Cain Velasquez in that same mentor role. Do you see yourself ever maybe taking up that mentor role post-retirement like Shawn Michaels has at the Performance Center? It seems like he gets a lot out of that.
Starting point is 00:14:29 Right. You know, they say, and I haven't been there yet, that it's very hard to leave what you're passionate about. Yeah. You know, it's very hard because you can never say, no, I'm done. So maybe that might be a passion that might grow within me after I say it's over be in the ring teaching kids
Starting point is 00:14:51 especially kids because you have to be a certain age to start training wrestling professional wrestling especially in the PC but if I can groom kids like I did at one point at eight years old that wanted to learn how to become a wrestler,
Starting point is 00:15:08 by the time they're 16, they'll be golden. I was 14 and I was like, man, I'm tired of training. I want to wrestle. Kane, you were wrestling for a little bit with a mask on and now you're in the WWE. It doesn't appear like you're going to be wrestling with that mask on. Was that
Starting point is 00:15:23 a decision that you made? Was that a decision that someone else made? Could we see the mask maybe come back? Anything could happen in the future. As of right now, you know, wrestling Brock, I want to wrestle him without the mask. And, you know, it'd be like we did it back in the day, like we did it back in 2010. Yeah. Have you heard from Dana White since you came to the WWE? I saw that he said to the media, you know, that he wished you all the best
Starting point is 00:15:50 and it seemed like you guys have a very good relationship. But have you talked to him? I did, yeah. When we were in the middle of the whole deal, he called me up. We ended up talking, and it was all very positive. It seems like he has a better appreciation for wrestling now, probably post-Ronda Rousey and maybe post even seeing someone like Matt Riddle and guys that have come over.
Starting point is 00:16:12 Back in the day, he would talk trash about it, all that fake stuff, this, that, the next thing. Now he's very appreciative and very supportive. He said that he hopes you have the same success Ronda has. So it's got to be cool to be one of those people that really showed Dana White this is legit. It is. And I think he's realizing it now that it's it's really good just cross promotion between, you know, I will always be a part of the UFC in some way. You know, whether it's promoting, whether it's helping like other other fighters out. I love I love the coaching aspect, you know, of of of sports.
Starting point is 00:16:48 So I'm always coaching when I'm'm always coaching when I'm training myself. So I think there's a lot of room for me and the UFC to still grow and still have a relationship, even though I'm doing WWE full-time now. And you have said that you're doing WWE full-time. You've withdrawn from the USADA testing pool and all that. WWE is completely your main focus right now, you you've moved on from mma yeah i think that's very admirable uh transitioning a bit to wrestling gear and wrestling masks uh ray i think you're the greatest of all time when it comes to the actual aesthetic of a wrestler how important do you think that is to a wrestler because there's some guys like stone cold steve austin who can go out in a pair of boots and black tights with nothing on them,
Starting point is 00:17:27 and he can become the biggest star this industry's ever seen, maybe. Yes. And then there's someone like you who catches your eye immediately. And you hooked me in WrestleMania 19, was the first WrestleMania I ever watched live. You came out in that daredevil gear. And that was immediately for me. Before the match started, I was like, that's my favorite wrestler.
Starting point is 00:17:44 So how important do you think attire is to a wrestler the look of a wrestler I was again going back to my old school days my uncle was always very elegant Rey Mysterio Sr the way he dressed or the way he presented himself
Starting point is 00:17:59 in the ring was always very flashy boots always clean you know back then if you got a stain on the boot because i helped them wipe off the the stains a lot from the uh the paint on the mat you know with alcohol and um and swabs you just clean up his boots you know but he would always wear a different mask every time he'd wrestle so i kind of picked up that uh that elegance from from him uh and i know i guess i started a trend here of just every time i'm on tv wear something different different color my design always stayed the same um but i would wear a
Starting point is 00:18:39 different color and of course i when i got into wrestlemania's i started doing the the uh superhero theme and that's when it really took off. Yeah, I mean, I got to bring up the superhero theme for me because those were always my favorite. It would be a thing where I would legitimately—I'm obviously a huge nerd. So I'd be like, oh, my God, what's Rey going to come out as this year? The Dark Knight year, obviously. I was like, he's got to come out something Dark Knight. He came out as the Joker.
Starting point is 00:19:01 He had all the face paint and all that. What are your favorites out of the superheroes that you've done that you look back on and you're like, that was awesome? I think definitely the Joker is one that stands out just because it was the first villain that I've ever done. It's so different, right? You had the face paint on under it, everything like that. The wig when you came out. That was cool. And the match served purpose for the outfit, too.
Starting point is 00:19:23 It was a couple seconds, 45-second match. You, like, stole it from out from under JBL. Which I thought was really historical, man, to have JBL go out in that fashion. You know, incredible. I tipped my mask off to him. But besides that outfit, I would have to say, even though it's not considered one of the superheroes, but the Avatar outfit that I wore. Avatar was cool, yeah. I thought that was really cool.
Starting point is 00:19:47 What was that, WrestleMania 27? Or no, that was Captain America, actually. Yes. Captain Mexico, I'm sorry. Exactly. And then out of all of the attires that you've worn and all of that, do you ever feel like the match will sometimes make the mask or make the attire? In that if you go out and you have an incredible match i'm thinking of the match against chris jericho at the bash oh nine
Starting point is 00:20:09 where i'm like that gear seems iconic to me now but i think it's because that match was so awesome do you ever feel like that or maybe even halloween havoc the yellow the purple the jumpsuit phantom yeah uh i think that that definitely made or both made each other the match, same as the outfit. That was definitely a very stepping stone for my career, having to wrestle Eddie in 97 at Halloween Havoc. The fact that that was the same year that my son was born. Dominic was only a month old. So it was just a very special night. And I think that outfit was designed to make
Starting point is 00:20:47 history along with that match absolutely and we'll get to that match a little bit later i have matches written down for you and fights written down for you that i'd like to get a little career retrospective on but before we get to that i sticking with superheroes for just one more question how do you feel about all these old school directors coming out francis ford coppola this guy this guy scorsese talking on superhero movies, saying they're not cinema, they're not this. I know you're a big fan, so I'm just trying to get you to rally with me. Man, it's hard to hear comments like that. It's crazy, right?
Starting point is 00:21:16 With that magnitude. I was actually, I hadn't seen Spiderman. The Far From Home? Far From Home, yes. And I was watching it last night. I was Yes And I was watching it Last night I was telling Ken I was watching it
Starting point is 00:21:27 On my way in From San Diego to New York And I was I only caught Like the first 45 minutes And I Was having a ball I loved it
Starting point is 00:21:35 Awesome movie right It has a lot of A lot of humor in it I mean Mysterio himself I loved it Yeah Loved it man Loved it
Starting point is 00:21:43 So I How can you talk trash What are your favorites out of the recent superhero movies? I didn't like the last Avengers. You didn't like Endgame? I wasn't a big fan. Me personally. Ray, you're breaking my heart.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Me personally. I thought I could have Did you like Infinity War before? Yes, I did. I know some people that go that way. See, I loved Infinity War and then when I watched Endgame it was like Man that breaks my heart But again We're just hard critics
Starting point is 00:22:12 Yeah I guess so Kane are you a big movie guy? What are your favorite movies? A lot of comedies, a lot of action movies One of my all time favorite movies One that nobody Probably has ever heard of um late 80s movie um the blood of heroes i have not heard of it so you're correct yeah so it's one of
Starting point is 00:22:33 the movies that kind of got me well it was i think it's a movie that was ahead of its time it's a mix of like mma american gladiators and american football all mixed into one and I started like for me watching it I started doing that me and my brother and sisters we would fight like they would in the movie you know so that to me is kind of what got me started I guess into MMA as well. What are your other favorite like fighting
Starting point is 00:22:58 movies? Are you a Rocky fan? Do you like the Creed movies? Have you seen Warrior? The Tom Hardy MMA movie? No I haven't seen that. That's a good one. As far as fighting movies, I'm more of a comedy. Oh, yeah? All right.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Name some comedies. The Big Lebowski is one of my favorites. Classic. Jeff Bridges. I'm always... Yeah. Oh, amazing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:21 I like those stupid comedies. You know, what was that one? Oh, amazing, yeah. I like those stupid comedies. What was that one? Ben Stiller. I forget. Ben Stiller's awesome, too. Yeah, Ben Stiller. I love Ben Stiller. Yeah, me too.
Starting point is 00:23:33 One of my favorites as well. Big Ben Stiller, guys, yeah. Zoolander, Dodgeball. Stupid comedies. I love Zoolander. I love Dodgeball. Meet the Fockers. Meet the Fockers.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Meet the Parents was the first one, right? Yeah. Meet the Fockers, yeah. All right, so I've got Five fights written down for you Kane And I've got five matches written down for you Ray That kind of span Maybe not your careers but a large Portion of your careers we can start with you Kane When I name these fights
Starting point is 00:23:59 Just tell me what you remember about them If you could add anything to them if you can Your UFC debut UFC 83 against Brad Morris What do you remember about him if you could add anything to him if you can your ufc debut ufc 83 against brad morris what do you remember about that um what i remember about that uh i remember um the fight should have been stopped earlier than what than what it was um you know went in there just just beat up uh morris you know and i think the fight should have been stopped earlier. Super early UFC card. Were you nervous about making that, like, Bright Lights debut? So that was Matt Serra, GSP2, and it was a huge crowd. When I went out there, it was a huge crowd.
Starting point is 00:24:39 I feel like NCAA wrestling got me kind of used to, you know, competing in front of people. Yeah. So I knew that that was going to happen. And, you know, but again, just the task at hand and, you know, focus on what I had to do kind of blocked the people out of it. Just I was just focused on what I had to do. All right. Moving on. Your first fight with Brock Lesnar, UFC 121.
Starting point is 00:25:05 What do you remember about that man it was um you know everything that i've worked for and everything that that i wanted to do in the sport um you know it came down to that match came out of that fight um it was like my dreams and hopes and everything all into that into that fight um at the time brock was a guy that was you know very like unbeatable right he was huge good wrestling a lot of power um you know just very very intimidating figure you know so a lot of a lot of pressure but for me it was like yeah man i was just destined to be there and to to beat him on that night. How did you tune that out of your brain, the intimidation part of Lesnar?
Starting point is 00:25:49 Because he had that aura around him at the time. Like you said that he was unbeatable. So how did you tune that out and be like, I am the one to beat Brock Lesnar and then go on to do it? It's different, man. When you're a fighter and you fight, I'm sure every guy's mentality is different, man. But my mentality out there is I'm a killer, you know, uh, it's kill or be killed. I'm going to go out there and fuck him up. That's how I feel all the time. Whenever I get into conflict, I'm a fucking killer. I got this. All right. Um, your, your fight against Junior
Starting point is 00:26:18 Dos Santos, uh, the UFC on Fox debut when you lost the UFC title, what do you remember about that? Uh, going in in you know not being able to to practice what like how I should fight you know having little injuries here and there um it was really tough but you know what um I just it was hard man um it was hard to go out there and try to do the things that I want to do and not being able to. But, you know, Dos Santos is a tough dude, and he beat me that night, yeah. So skipping forward to the second fight where you regained your title against him.
Starting point is 00:26:52 What do you remember about that? Coming back and actually literally taking the title from the man who stole it from you, that had to feel amazing. Did that feel better than even the first title win? Oh, I love revenge. I love it. Yeah, yeah, that's all that was in my head love revenge. I love it. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:05 That's all that was in my head, man. I just like shit myself low when you said that. I mean, again, it's just in that moment, you know. It's like to me competing and, you know, going against someone is everything, you know. And for like Dos Santos, I think he's a great human being you know but competing is something else it's something different like i'll compete at anything that's how competitive i am but for him to go in and take something away from me that i've worked so hard for um i had to make an example out of him i had to to punish him um and that's all I was thinking about at that moment. Keep in mind that Kane is here to face Brock for revenge of Dominic.
Starting point is 00:27:49 Yeah. So, this is going to be something. I mean, revenge for Dominic and also what he's done to him already. Yeah. It's going to be really sweet for all of us. I mean, I feel like I'm part of the Mysterio family now. So, really do it for all of us, right? And then finally for you, your fight against Travis Brown, UFC 200.
Starting point is 00:28:06 A big return to the octagon for you, and you really got it done. It felt good. It felt good, yeah. Travis Brown, again, a lot of respect for what he's done in the sport, and just a human being as well. It's hard to fight those guys that,
Starting point is 00:28:21 like him and Noguera, guys that you don't hate, that you like, you know. But, hey, man, again, it's competing. It's competition. I like that fight with Travis Brown because I'm always working on new stuff and always trying to get better, you know. And I did that spinning back kick, you know, in that fight that I've done in practice just recently. And I've landed a bunch of times. And it's like, okay, I can do it here. So it was great just to be a part of UFC 200.
Starting point is 00:28:53 Maybe bring that spinning back kick out against Brock at Crown Jewel. Of course, maybe. All right, so moving over to Ray. I've written down five matches, five matches that, for me at least, as a longtime Rey Mysterio fan that I would love to hear a little bit more about. The first one, Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Psychosis, July 10th, 1995. This was a legendary match among tape traders. Tape traders used to talk about this match like it was the greatest thing ever.
Starting point is 00:29:19 Now you can find it on the network. But do you remember anything about this? This is ECW? Yes. Yeah. Very first match that we had? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Man, I remember anything about this? This is ECW? Yes. Yeah. Very first match that we had? Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:27 Oh, yeah. Man, I remember walking into the locker room. I remember getting picked up at the airport and taken to the travel lodge. It was like a tower. Do you remember who picked you up? Was it like one of the people on the roster? No, Kathy. Okay.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Kathy Fitzpatrick, which I still have. We're in contact every time we go to Baltimore. She comes down to the shows and has a good time. But she picked us up. She brought us to the hotel. And I remember seeing a bunch of cops outside the hotel. Like, what's going on? Keep in mind, I'm only 18 years old.
Starting point is 00:29:55 Going into 19 maybe. And cops are coming down the stairway and they have this dude handcuffed. And big riot. And it was New Jack. Get out of here. And we're like, what's going on, man? It was like 12 noon.
Starting point is 00:30:09 New Jack was getting arrested like the night before, the day of? The day of the show. Yeah, so we're like, holy shit. We had no idea who it was.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Of course, we checked in. Later on that night, we go to the arena and we're backstage and the same guy that got arrested was like,
Starting point is 00:30:23 oh shit. Terrifying personality to be around. I've been around him before. He makes eye contact with you. You look the other way. But that was actually a great welcoming to the ECW vibe, man. And was that your first, like, real big show in America? That was, yeah, I would have to say.
Starting point is 00:30:41 The first official show with a company in America that was hot at the time. I remember both Psychosis and I walked up to Paul Heyman and we said, excuse me, Paul, is it okay if we use a chair during our match? He's like, you can use whatever you want. Just go out there and have a good time. That's exactly what he did. Probably the most ridiculous question he ever got in ECW of all places. Probably, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Next up, my favorite match in the history of WCW. We touched on it before. You versus Eddie Guerrero, Halloween Havoc 97. That was an incredible moment. That whole week was very tense because I had heard throughout the whole week that they wanted me to lose the mask. That's where the whole rumor started. And as far as I was concerned, I knew that come Halloween Havoc, that was the day that I was going to lose the mask. Were you okay with that?
Starting point is 00:31:39 Were you trying to come to grips with it? I was trying to convince them not to do it because I'm very prideful of what I've been wearing for so many years. Of course. The respect, the tradition, my beliefs. So, of course, they gave me the runaround, and I ended up making it to the show. Everything's laid out for the night, and 20 minutes before I walk out to the ring, everything gets reversed. So now I'm keeping the mask and I become Cruiserweight champ. Were you overjoyed?
Starting point is 00:32:13 Were you going out for that match almost like with a sigh of relief? I was tense. I was really, really tense. Definitely not the way I wanted to go out and face Eddie Guerrero that night. But for some reason, God had a plan, and the plan was to make that match a historical match. Definitely. For whatever reason it was, but he made it a historical night, and I'm blessed to have been part of it. That was a pinnacle in my career.
Starting point is 00:32:41 Definitely. Up next, I have another match written down against Eddie Guerrero. This is one of my personal favorites. It's become almost, I want to call it like a cult classic, SummerSlam 05 ladder match for the custody of Dominic. What do you remember about this, especially now we're in 2019? Dominic is coming up. I don't even recognize him as the kid that he was, you know, in the front row at SummerSlam.
Starting point is 00:33:00 I'll tell you what I remember, and still to this day, we give my son Dominic shit for this. When he went up behind the ladder and he went, kind of shake it. It's very, very emotional now, I'm turning 46 years old, to go back and to see or to memorize or remember the moments that I got to share with my son when, you know, this type of business, you don't get to do stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:33:32 You know, so I'm very blessed to have had both my son and one of my brothers in the ring who actually, if I'm not mistaken, between Eddie and Bruce were the ones that came up with this storyline that was incredibly genius.
Starting point is 00:33:53 Eddie and Bruce Prichard? Yes, which was incredibly genius. And, you know, who would have thought that 15 years later my son was going to be part of a bigger storyline. And people are still talking about that original match. People are still bringing it up all the time. There's people that grew up like you watching it as a kid that remembers and that admires what happened back then and what's happening now. Yeah, and as a kid, it really was. I never hated anyone more in my life than when Eddie was trying to steal the custody of Dominic from you with the I'm your poppy shirt, all that. Oh my God. I'll tell you what, I actually
Starting point is 00:34:29 did hate one person more. It was Chavo. When he put you in the truss, hit you with a chair on the knee. Oh my God. I was at the SmackDown the next week and he was cutting a promo. I was standing up and I was screaming such profanities at him that my brother had to tell me to sit down. Moving on, Rey Mysterio versus Kurt Angle versus Randy Orton, WrestleMania 22. This is, much profanities at him that my brother had to tell me to sit down um moving on ray mysterio versus kurt angle versus randy orton wrestlemania 22 this is for me a ray mysterio fan this was the pinnacle for me you winning the world heavyweight championship at wrestlemania 22 it's my favorite match ever under 15 minutes wow and and you're right it was very short um is it true that that that your time got cut right beforehand and you had to rush things?
Starting point is 00:35:05 Or was that match always going to be the sprint that it was? I don't really remember. I was just so caught up that day with my nerves and my family being there and making sure that everything was on point. It's just one of those days where you get caught up with the emotion that, you know, everything just kind of played out the way it should have played out. I just remember being in the ring with two of the greats. I'm a big fan of Kurt Angle and I'm a big fan of Randy Orton still to this day. I think he's one of the best performers in WWE to this day. I'm just very blessed to have won the title in that way. It was just very historical for me as well. Super emotional. It's such a moment.
Starting point is 00:35:58 It's a WrestleMania moment that still they play back all the time. Your entrance was awesome that night with the entire Aztec headdress. So cool, POD. Mad one, yeah. The fifth match on here, another one that we mentioned before, Chris Jericho versus Ray Mysterio, the Bash 09. Wow. Man, I've always had incredible chemistry with Jericho. You have, all the way back to WCW. I was just reading on Twitter the other day that he put out a comment that he pretty much was laughing at me when he knew I was a wrestler.
Starting point is 00:36:33 Like, this kid really wrestles? And then, of course, he saw me at the J-Cup in 95. And he said, man, you fucking blew my mind, man. I had no clue there was guys like you doing what we do. Who would have thought years, years later we were going to end up in a ring together, same company. Not once, but twice. And work against each other. And just unbelievable chemistry that we had with each other.
Starting point is 00:37:01 Still, I have to say that Jericho amongst Eddie and Kurt, some of my favorite guys to be in the ring with. Would that be if you had to name just a couple? I wouldn't put you on the spot and say name one. No, without a doubt. You know, there's historical matches that you have that you like, just makes you feel proud that you were able to share the ring like The Undertaker. To me, that was like, wow, I was able to share the ring like the undertaker to me that was totally wow
Starting point is 00:37:26 i was able to do that royal rumble uh no just the mat the single matches that i had with him on you had a singles with him at the royal rumble though right yes i had i had actually two well i believe one was on smackdown was at the rumble yeah you're right but those are moments that you cherish and like wow totally but there's moments that and i had incredible chemistry with the undertaker like it was yeah toe-to-toe it was the perfect david versus goliath which he actually seems to have a lot of good chemistry with smaller opponents like that you look back at his matches with jeff hardy and all that yeah yeah could be maybe one of those things for him very true but then then you have the guys that you just you knew you were going to be in the ring with them pretty much half of the year yeah you. You know, that was Eddie.
Starting point is 00:38:06 That was Jericho. Dean Malenko, without a doubt. Through my phases in my wrestling career, you know, AAA, WCW, WWE, I had my favorites. I think those were some of the guys in the U.S. Psychosis in Mexico, Hooves in Mexico. And Kane, for you, what are the names that you're like? Now you're in the WWE. Now you're competing against Brock Lesnar, hopefully winning his title at Crown Jewel. Who do you want to compete against that you're watching the WWE and you say, I would love to have a match with blank?
Starting point is 00:38:35 To me, just the best guys. You know, I feel like even in my MMA days, it's like I never picked opponents. It was more of like, I want to fight against the best guys. I want to prove myself. I want to, I want that challenge. You know, have you had the experience yet to know whether or not you maybe prefer facing a bigger opponent in that Haas type battle or a smaller opponent in, like I said, the David versus Goliath, you know, which one that you like, or if, if you're down for everything right now, cause you're still so early on. I'm down for anything right now. Watching Ray growing up and watching
Starting point is 00:39:09 his style and everything, somebody that I've looked up to. For me to be a tag team with Ray, that'd be the shit. I would love to see that. Once you heal up, I would love to see it. We'll end on that note. Obviously, you can tune in to Crown Jewel on Halloween. on uh october 31st on the wwe network guys it
Starting point is 00:39:29 was a pleasure thank you so much likewise thank you
