Hello and welcome to My Mom's Basement presented by Barstool Sports and a very special
penguin edition of My Mom's Basement presented by Barstool Sports. It is Robbie, Fox, and Clem,
as always. We're down here in Gotham. I'm actually in Austin. We're here for another
pop-punk show. I feel like a bit of a rock star doing My Mom's Basement from the Road so often because of our rock tour and stuff.
But Clem, how are we doing and what did we think of the first episode of The Penguin?
We're doing good, Robbie.
The reason we're doing good, I feel like we're about to watch a show for the podcast that's good.
We have a good TV show.
At the very least, I'd say like that's almost –
I don't want to say the floor is good because then I'm setting myself up
for a whole lot of pain, but I feel like the floor is good.
I said when they announced that the Penguin was going to be aired
during the 9 p.m. slot on HBO, even though that's just a thing
like old people even know anymore, I felt like that was a good sign
because there's so many absolute hits that have aired in that slot.
The Sopranos, Game of Thrones.
Basically, if HBO thinks you're prime cut, a filet mignon, if you're a steak connoisseur like myself, who won that draft, by the way, you would put it in the 9 p.m. slot.
And based on one episode, I think we have some filet mignon.
Is that crazy to think right now no like
honestly i watched the episode and like probably halfway through it i was like all right this is
hbo sunday night quality like they weren't fucking around this is really fucking good i mean i got
chills the first time i got chills watching this episode when the title screen hits for the first time like the intro to it hooks you
so much on such an insane level that when they hit the penguin for the first time i was like oh
this is gonna be special like you could tell colin farrell's we saw him in the batman obviously
i get the shirt on for today um but we knew his performance a little bit you really get to expand
on it in this and like it took me
all of five minutes to be like holy fuck he might win an emmy for this yeah i and right before uh
the episode got released there were the quotes coming out he was saying how much he hated the
fat suit and how he doesn't want to look at it again i'm like well i think we're only going to
get one at one season of the penguin because i feel like colin farrell farrell's a guy who'd be
like fuck this i'm out i don't if i don't like, fuck this. I'm out. I don't,
if I don't want to do it anymore,
I'm not doing it.
But yeah,
you said it.
Like,
I think if I remember our Batman recap,
we liked the character.
I think I wanted more.
I thought I was going to get more of him,
but I guess the plan was always to like have his own series.
And that's the thing about this series that I don't know.
I guess it's a good thing.
It doesn't feel like it's part of the Batman movie
or it's a continuation or a sequel.
It feels like they could have just made this
without the Batman movie ever being made
or future plans for these characters in Gotham
to have these arcs.
And it felt like it's just a,
let's just make a good fucking TV show.
And like you said, just the things,
like the way the music hits,
the way they hit those screens,
the acting performances,
everything.
It's like,
holy shit,
we have a good goddamn TV show.
And I hate to say it,
but I honestly think like all those MCU shows on Disney plus have had my brain thinking,
well,
it's going to be a TV show.
It's going to kind of be like a diet code version of the movie.
And this one feels like it is just pound for pound gonna be as good as like
most of the some of the stuff we've seen on hbo so i am very excited i also was like do we put
as the um thumbnail slash headline james gunn saves the dcu with the penguin even though the
penguin i mean it was already planned out it might have been shot before james gunn took. But I think it would be like the funny thing to like try to be the nerd experts
and be like, no, well, actually, it was before James Gunn took over.
Nonetheless, though, I feel like we said D.C. needs some wins to like get the momentum going.
This feels like a fucking week one, 56-0 drubbing.
And you're like, oh, oh man we might have a team that
we could pencil into the playoffs right here yeah i mean what you said about the mcu shows i relate
to so much because watching this kind of had that thought in my brain i'm generally the most
positive about the mcu shows even the shows i don't love i try to find the stuff that is good
from watching this though it is like such a noticeable jump up in quality. It reminds you that superhero movies and shows can kind of go in a completely different direction and not just be like inspired by other superhero movies and shows and take it to the place where it's like the quality level just goes up and up and up.
I saw a tweet about the Batman, the movie itself, and someone was like, I love the Batman because Matt Reeves said, what if we took a superhero movie and just shot it like a real movie?
And it's like, of course, he's not the first person to do that.
They did it with The Dark Knight.
They did it with even, I would say, the Keaton Batman movies to a degree.
But they really, really like hammer that home here.
The look of Gotham looks exactly like it did in the movie.
And it feels lived in it feels like a place where you know you see the
corner store and you're like i think that's the one from the fucking batman you see the underpass
of the bridge you're starting to pick out locations the iceberg lounge such a great you know now that
it's uh devastated by the flood from the end of the batman such a great look and such a great um
almost like reset for us where in the batman he didn great look and such a great um almost like reset for us
where in the batman he didn't have it all but he was doing pretty well and now we're in this power
vacuum and it's like he's kind of got to start at the bottom and make his way up yes he's positioned
well but it's going to be exciting and the other thing that we haven't even really mentioned yet
the whole lead-up we've been saying it looks like they're making the sopranos but the penguin
after one episode i can confirm they're making the Sopranos, but the penguin after one episode,
I can confirm they're making the Sopranos,
but penguin.
And someone that just did a full rewatch of the Sopranos.
It's like,
well,
I've got another like bald mafia guy who you kind of like him.
He kind of root for him and he see his good sides,
but he's also like an absolute horrible person as well.
I feel like it's just me and Jimmy G just hanging out yet again,
Jimmy Gandolfini.
So yeah. And again, another top notch actor hitting that role. And you said it too, like,
I mean, obviously we're both from the New York area, the tri-state area, like that is New York.
Like you smell the fucking like subway or the underground and the trash everywhere. And then,
but you're also getting just enough. Cause he said, it doesn't feel like I'm reading a comic book in the traditional sense of
superheroes flying around,
but it's like,
Oh yeah.
Like this is what it would look like if this is the post flood of the
Batman.
And this is how they're building through it.
That train just sitting underground.
I thought it was such a cool visual and it's something I would see in a
Superman book or sorry,
a Batman book where you're just like,
Oh yeah.
Gotham is kind of a fucking dump.
I loved seeing even like,
let's get into the actual episode itself now.
I loved seeing them begin with the news footage as well.
It was like a nice transition from the movie to the show
where it felt like they were like, all right,
we know that you might have the vibe
of the movie in your head.
We're going to remind you everything that happened there.
You see the mayor give a statement.
You see, you know, news footage all over the city, the floods, which I love seeing that shit.
Like, I loved even in Spider-Man Homecoming when they're like, hey, we're going to open this movie cleaning up the wreckage of the Avengers battle.
When you do the little stuff like that that expands on a movie like that, I absolutely love it.
So that was one of my favorite things. And then, yeah, my other thing was gotham looks the same as it did in the batman
i don't know how much money they spent doing that i feel like there's maybe one or two moments in
the show where i could tell that they were on a green screen set but otherwise i thought it
looked fucking fantastic uh i my first note was the same exact as yours i always love fake news
reports when they're done well and and those are done spectacularly.
It's one of my favorite ways to be like, hey, we're going to, you know,
tell you the events that have happened since we saw you last
or stuff you just need to know about.
And that's one of those things you can rewatch two or three times
and you pick up a whole bunch of new stuff on.
So I'm always a sucker for that.
And you kind of mentioned the Spider-Man where they did that as well.
And, yeah, I mean, I was – so at this point I'm like, all right,
we have something here.
I just wanted to make one more comment about what I said about the MCU shows
and to a lesser degree, the Star Wars shows,
because obviously Andor hit in its own way.
I said my biggest,
the thing that got me always upset about the boys is I would love the boys
seasons and every episode could live
on its own and I don't feel like the MCU
I don't think every episode could live on its own
it had to be part of the whole season if not
other parts of the MCU
and again and at the end of the
season it was like kind of underwhelmed
I just cancelled Disney Plus the other day
I told you I'm due to resubscribe in two
months I still have two months left but they're not just automatically getting my money anymore if there's times where I don't need Disney Plus the other day. I told you I'm due to resubscribe in two months. I still have two months left, but they're not just automatically
getting my money anymore. If there's times
where I don't need Disney Plus, I'm fucking done
with it. You have to start earning my
money back. My kids are probably
growing. They have enough stuff going on.
They're not always watching Bluey.
If there's not a Star Wars or an MCU show
I have to cover for the pod, I'm just done with
Disney Plus. I'm going to be a month
to month person at this point because they just have to win me back.. I'm just like done with Disney Plus. I'm going to be like a month to month person at this point
because they just have to, they have to win me back.
And that is obviously Iger's fucking like goal.
Because if people like me are giving up on you,
like the only people left are Robbie at that point.
And by the way, speaking of Disney Plus and MCU shows,
Agatha All Along also came out this week.
Yes.
We have mentioned, we're not going to like recap that week to week,
especially because the Penguin is going to be a week to week show for us.
And it seemingly is going to be a great week to week show that we're going to want to recap.
But I kind of had the idea that I'll go in and I'll watch Agatha All Along
and I'll just explain what's happening to Clem and we'll see how that goes.
So not next week.
Next week will be the Comic Book Club with Jose.
Secret Wars, the original Secret Wars.
Go and read it. That's coming out on the 26th. We recorded the episode already. Not next week. Next week will be the comic book club with Jose secret wars, the original secret wars,
go and read it.
That's coming out on the 26th. We recorded the episode already.
I think it went very well.
I mean,
come on,
you can't go wrong with a Jose episode.
And that's also,
it's a weird schedule for the penguin.
So we got it on Thursday this week.
We're not going to get a new penguin on Sunday,
but in the future,
this will be the HBO Sunday night show.
I don't know why it was a one
week delay, but that's why it kind of worked out perfect with the comic book club next week. And
then the week after we'll be back for Penguin episode two. Yeah. So we'll have a gap where we
haven't watched the Penguin and we wouldn't have had a Penguin episode. That comic book fills in
perfectly there. If you haven't read Secret Wars yet, buy the book. If you can't buy the book,
you can get it online. I use Zip Comics at one point, even though I have it because i'm so old my eyes stink so i had to zoom in that was made me feel a
million years old i didn't bring that one up on the pod and i'm sure you can find like youtube
videos that can kind of read through it if you just want to like audiobook it or do whatever
you want to do but learn about this shit jose gives us a ton of fun nuggets about stuff before
during and after and how it affects marvel and and how it might affect the MCU down the road. Absolutely, so look out for that, and then we go back to the Penguin, he pulls up
to the Iceberg Lounge, the destroyed Iceberg Lounge, and the beginning is just, you know,
you don't get real dialogue from them, they do that cool shot from behind, which that's such a
staple of the Batman universe, I feel like, Craig Frazier is the director of photography, did such
a good job on the movie.
And then we start off with what I think is going to be a common theme throughout the show,
hilarious physical comedy in Colin Farrell's hammer swings when he's trying to break into the wall.
Everything this guy does from the waddle to the hammer swings.
Later on, he has to dump a body the way he throws the body.
His physical comedy, yes, there's a lot of Gandolfini in his performance, but it reminds me a lot of Breaking Bad style physical comedy.
The Walter White style of just like you're laughing at like, this is the guy we're watching do all these major operations, and he's kind of just like a goof.
I loved that about it.
The major, the kingpin of New Mexico, they didn't think how they're going to move the barrels right and yeah something that a normal person would do and this guy especially the penguin
he has his limitations and it's easy to see when a guy like devito's playing the pain because he's
so small and he's kind of has that rotund look but you but like this guy is hulking even if he
is a lot fat and it's just incredible and the penguin left was it that pronounced in the batman
because i have to go that's the thing i was like it couldn't have been we would have talked about
it i have to go back and re-watch the batman i had it on my list i'm really excited to go re-watch it
you know with some distance the three hour run time it still gets me mad to this day like did
we really really need to do that did we really yeah it's
it's really long and i think as we said at the time i've re-watched it a ton when i re-watch it
it i wouldn't say it like falls off a cliff in the third act because i really like the third
act and i love the ending when it's like batman realizes he can't be about vengeance he has to be
providing hope for the people and all of that but once they get to the arena it is like all right
come on now let's i i'm now you're saying this and i'm kind of remembering like talking about it
yeah that uh all right but you know what the fast forward button we have at the house but the first
75 of it that's just detective story is so fucking good like i'm excited for the batman 2 to continue
that detective story because as we mentioned on the
podcast, Matt Reeves is very much like
the movies will be about Batman.
We're not doing the typical thing where you
make the first movie about Batman's origin
and then the second movie, the Joker, someone
comes in and kind of takes over.
I think that's what the shows are for, which is
great. And then we meet Alberto
Falcone. Not
Falcone. Sometimes they're Falcone. falcone sometimes they're falcone in this show
they're falcone uh they're grounding everyone also oswald cobblepot no uh-uh oscob which again
they were like we've got to ground the character i don't think cob is more grounded than cobblepot
really i didn't know if they were changing if that was just nickname stuff so he's just oscob
yeah okay that's fair which i'm fine with, that doesn't bother me as a comic fan, but it just seems like, eh, you didn't need
to do that.
This is like a ratio.
We're doing some Ellis Island on people and we're just taking away their comic heritage.
There was a great tweet because they said they did it to make the character more grounded.
And I forget who, but someone tweeted, I'm going to start calling Benedict Cumberbatch
Benedict Cumber to make him more grounded you mean ben come ben come
um and then we we meet alberto we could tell he's kind of a loose cannon but he is the heir to the
the falcon throne at this point with carmine dead so oz tries to hit like a spin zone on him
he's like oh i was trying to bring you your shit you
know like this was promised to you and all that and we talk about the drops the drops are seemingly
the main drug in Gotham we learned that from the Batman I think it's still carrying over to this
and I think it'll be probably a big part of this show when talking about a mafia and stealing shipments and stuff like that um and
then i had colin farrell's acting in his eyes is so incredible because he's wearing the fat suit so
he can't get as much facial reaction but it's all in his eyes the way he's looking at carmine the
way carmine starts to laugh at him and oz starts to get annoyed in his eyes unmistakable gandolfini
and his performance like unmistakable it has to be
directly inspired uh we learned that falcone put maroney in prison and has the ring i think we
might have known that from the batman movie actually but has the ring as a trophy and then
he mocks oz and clem mocking oz cob might not be the best idea. We learned quickly fucking pulls the gun.
Boom title screen.
And it's like,
Oh,
holy fuck.
We're going to put together maybe a do list and a don't list for the
penguin.
Don't list,
make fun of Oz Cobb,
especially like it was kind of an innocent thing.
He was like just the kid that he was looking back fondly on this guy.
And I don't think it was by,
maybe that's what he wants to be.
And that would be fine.
We'll see how the character evolves.
But Alberto,
not the best.
How do we have an Alberto in the book?
What's he like?
Is he a hard,
this guy was an absolute hard.
Oh,
and I was like,
please kill this motherfucker right now.
Oz.
Not that I know of.
And I want to apologize to the listeners.
I've been talking into a mic that wasn't on for 15 minutes.
I just realized I switched the mic and this is the actual podcast mic.
So I hope I wasn't too bad audio wise.
I couldn't tell.
But yeah, I don't know.
And Alberto from the books, he could exist for sure.
They've done so many Penguin stories in the last 20 years, even that he could be part of that.
But yeah, he played the role so
well that he had me convinced for like when penguin first saw him i was like all right penguin might
have to fucking kill this guy right away but the guy was such a good actor and in their scene their
back and forth i was kind of convinced like all right maybe he dies in episode two or three but
like this is going to be a character in the show and they let us know right away like don't trust anyone in that way brings his body down does the thing where he throws it
dumps it that really made me laugh which is real dark comedy to laugh at someone throwing a body
and then we see the kids trying to rob his car and he shoots at him grabs one of them and then
in such an unbelievably fucked insane move has the
kid help him with the body and i'm thinking he's just gonna have him throw it in the trunk and be
like i'm taking your id you know i remember you don't tell anybody no no no he's like you're gonna
drive me to my alibi you're gonna drive me to the junkyard you're gonna drive me here it's this kid vick and he's
terrified i wrote from his perspective from vick's perspective you can make a a show like the night
of out of this pilot where it's like he thought he was jacking some rims with his friends and he
is now an accomplice to murder and almost getting murdered himself you know skipping ahead a bit
but i i thought this was great.
I thought their dynamic was great.
And one of my favorite lines, where is it?
I think it's when he, it's when they get food,
which was another crazy thing.
Peng was like, I'm hungry.
Are you hungry?
And it's like, I'm hungry right now.
You can eat right now.
But he's like, I asked for extra pickles.
They give me two pickles.
What is extra?
That means one is normal. They they give me two pickles what is extra that means one is normal
they're giving me two pickles now and the kid offers him the pickles and they're disgust
on colin farrell's face when he's like do i want one of your pickles no he's cracked me the fuck
up but i said welcome to the team fic this is when he's he's like look at the sunset kid gives him a
cigar and you're like okay this is when is when we got to get rid of Vic.
But he begs for his life. I didn't think he was the best actor.
I feel bad saying that because he's younger, begs for his life.
And then Penguin says, all right, you're part of the team.
I would like already skipping ahead to the finale of the Penguin.
I would like it if we really see this relationship grow over the entire season and the final episode penguin
will fucking wax him oh wow see i'm the opposite i i like vic i like him a lot and i hope i hope
by the season finale we have seen this kid that was kind of just doing some innocent-ish hooligan
stuff with his friends to just becoming this badass dude with all the kids he has like like
some like boyish life in his eyes right he
looks super young and yeah i don't again i don't want to say he wasn't the best actor just when he
was begging for his life i was just like yeah it's hard to stand opposite colin farrell i and i think
when he was kind of had the speech impediment and penguin kind of sniffed that out i think he's like
this kid's kind of flawed like me and he's you know in the life of crime and i think that's the
probably the one thing that saved the kid as crazy as i don't know i think it was the stutter
yeah yeah i think he's like all right this kid i'm gonna like take him under my wing penguin
wink wink oh very nice which then takes me to my question do we have like are would you spoil
anything for me is victor aguilar is he a guy that is in the batman comics is this you know i don't
think it's robin but someone who's like a guy who it's like his real name is vict Aguilar is here guy that is in the Batman comics is this, you know, I don't think it's Robin,
but someone who's like a guy who it's like,
his real name is Victor Aguilar.
He could be.
I do not know of him.
I don't think I want to know either.
Cause I don't,
I don't think I do either.
Yeah.
How he comes,
blah,
blah,
blah.
I want to see it all play out on the screen.
I just like watching this and being like,
he's Christopher Moltisanti for the purposes of this show.
That's pretty much who he is here.
It's Tony's driver in the first episode and all that.
And like the pickle thing,
the way Colin reacted was very,
I thought that was like how that character would react.
But then I also,
the fact that the kid would offer him his pickles,
I thought was kind of sweet.
You know,
I would just not even think of it.
I do like the kid.
Yeah.
I like the kid.
I like the kid.
The kid played everything pretty well.
I would say in terms of like you, you got put in a horrible situation with a fucking psychopath murderer and he talked
your way out of it pretty well to the point where like maybe you're his number two now he's bringing
you around all the operations that was good when he goes in and the guy's like we got 30 of the
product and stuff and the kid is just behind him i've had those moments where like i'm backstage
and cody rhodes is bringing me around and nobody knows who the fuck i am and you just feel guilty being
there and you're just like i'm gonna stick to the guy that brought me here so that like that whole
dynamic and that scene made me laugh i liked the dynamic with his lady friend who's like i need an
alibi come on sounds like we had a great night Like everything about the vibe of this show.
I love,
and it did give me some vibes of the night of at times,
especially when we see some gross ass feet.
That was a part of that show that nobody even like,
like,
I don't know why they made it a part of the show in this.
It makes sense with the penguin.
He's got the club foot,
but gross,
Clem gross.
That this,
this makes me upset. the clubfoot I like that we understand
why the penguin walks the way he walks and it clearly uh bothered him but now I'm just mad
about the night of because that became like a multi-episode like arc that no one gave a fuck
I never paid off or anything it was a ran rap and shit also John Turturro in that show weird
there's little connections between uh he's not in this unfortunately we're not gonna see john taturo
as carmine falcon i mean he died in the batman and this is all post batman we know there's gonna
be some flashback scenes and they had to recast him so mark strong will be playing the younger
version mark strong is fantastic though so and in the pictures i've seen he's totally like you
could buy him as a young
john tituro they did a good job i think they put like a nose prosthetic on him maybe i think they
put like hair on him they're gonna make me like his kid too i know it they're gonna make me like
alberta sofia or alberto alberto they're gonna be like he was a good kid and then his dad was
such an asshole no elbows on the table stuff like that because that kid was a fucking prick i was so happy he got killed they
did a good job with falcone and the batman 2 making him typical mobster where he's very likable
until he's not like he didn't bruce goes to meet with him he kind of like puts the charm on he's
playing pool he's like oh what's up kid like i i haven't seen you in years like what do you want
to know and the way he kind of puts his arm around Bruce's shoulder and eventually tells him, like, yeah, your father wasn't the best guy.
You know, we all have to turn to crazy shit like that.
You realize, like, oh, fuck this.
He's not a good guy.
Oh, and you know what?
Now it's ringing a bell.
He frames Moroni for the murder, I think, or in some way.
I think it's Moroni's looped into that.
I think when he put Moroni away.
Gotcha.
Another line I loved out of the penguin. way i think it it's maroney's looped into that i think when he put maroney away gotcha um another
line i loved out of the penguin when he goes he gets called in to meet with the family and he's
like telling the kid like this could mean anything we don't know what it means such a tony soprano
performance and then when he leaves in the car he says sit tight maybe look for your sense of humor
it's got to be around here somewhere so funny his personality his like the way he talks, even his accent, which is like it's like a like a parody.
But it's also like it could be real.
It's a comic book.
So who gives a shit?
Right.
I liked it.
I liked it.
You know?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then we get a great unsettling introduction to Sophia Falcone when she walks in the room and great casting because those eyes,
she just looked almost glazed over and Oz looks back and he's like, Oh, like he gets a little
unsettled. His reaction tells us all we need to know about her. It's like, I thought you were,
uh, she's like in Arkham. Nope. Got out. And you're like, Oh, okay. I don't know what she did,
but I know that she's not one to be
trusted here they call her a psycho killer at one point which is crazy and i loved her calling oz on
his lie of she's like hey you know about this secret shipment that only alberto knew about and
you brought it up to my family to be like hey like there's got to be yeah there's got to be a way
where there's got to be a way where there's got to be a
scenario where he's not coming back if you're bringing this up right she brings him out to
dinner and stuff and that was all it felt tense with her and she was one where i was like oh she
can absolutely rival colin farrell in these scenes like the way they meshed was nice it was awesome
when they introduced her did you notice
as they're talking like it's like behind it's like blurry the doors open and she comes in
i'm like who's coming in there is it someone trying to whack him or is it you know just like
coincidence and then she comes in this all white i'm like again that's like that's quality fucking
television right there that's hbo it's not tv it's hbo that was an actual thing they used to say because it was a cut above the nonsense you would see and uh i i i saw something i don't know
if it was on twitter or video but it's i was seeing like the people who are talking about
her performance in the show she i guess she crushes it which makes perfect sense and i'm
just so happy because i need i need her to crush this role because i'll just go out this will be
the only time i go on on a brief rant about this.
What they did in the final season of How I Met Your Mother was offensive to those of us that followed the show from day one and fell in love with it.
And to anyone else who watched it, made it through that entire journey.
And not the last episode, which is a flaming dumpster fire of dog shit.
The entire season was.
And anyone who fights me on this, I'll tell you, instant block.
You just tweet me.
If you want to get blocked, that's the easiest way to get blocked from me
is tell me that How I Met Your Mother season, final season was good.
That actress was awesome too, and I was so happy she was.
I'm not going to spoil it, but what they did to that actress
and that character and that whole fucking beautiful TV show
angers me to my core.
I'm becoming Oz Cobb right now.
So wait, wait, wait.
It's not going to break bad.
This actress is in How I Met Your Mother?
Yes.
As what role?
The mother.
Spoiler.
She is.
Long, old ass show TV spoiler for those who are watching How I Met Your Mother.
I keep getting confused.
I'm not a How I Met Your Mother guy.
I know the broad strokes of how they ended it with Robin.
So it always confuses me that Robin is the mother,
but she's not.
She's not the mother, but she winds up with him.
Spoilers.
How I Met Your Mother spoilers right now.
I'm letting you guys go now.
If you don't want it, skip ahead to five minutes
because I'll probably go on this rant
for another few minutes after that.
They introduce the mom to Ted.
Who's like the main character was looking for the,
you know,
telling his kids through Bob Saget's voice about their mother.
And then you meet the mother.
She's delightful.
You've all learned how great this character is through stories about her
throughout the entire series.
And then they're like,
oh yeah,
she died.
And I want to marry her.
And rather than that,
it's cool.
You can marry her.
And I'm getting so fucking mad talking about it right now,
Bob.
So let's just say if this actress can crush this role of Sophia well enough, I can then.
It's like when Karketty was the mayor of The Wire and he was always Karketty.
Littlefinger became such a good character.
He trumped Karketty for me.
It's not easy to do.
It happened a few times with Wire Game of Thrones characters.
She can do it here.
And I need it to happen.
I don't know about Sophia.
I was going to ask you about her again. However, I picked up some it here. And I need it to happen. I don't know about Sophia. I was going to ask you about her again.
However, I picked up some clues here.
She said they called me hangman in Arkham, which I feel like that might be her character
name.
She might have like a villain named hangman.
And I realized it was very like obvious to me.
And maybe I was thinking of Gloria from the Sopranos.
She had a scarf around her neck.
And then she said hangman.
And I'm like, oh, this bitch either hangs people,
try to hang yourself or both.
And then in the other scene we see of her,
I noticed her neck is covered.
So I feel like we might have some story that's lying on that neck there.
I could be completely wrong,
but I feel like there's a Batman character potentially known as the hang
man.
Sophia Marone is that person.
So I love this actress.
She's crushing. She's good
and Wolf of Wall Street is kind of the nice straight
and narrow wife that gets cucked by
Margot Robbie. So
I like this actress and I'm hoping she
can crush it to the point I never think about having my
grandmother again. I will not talk about that show
the rest of this series. That's a promise
to you guys out there. And if I do, Bob, cut
me off, edit it out, and we'll be good.
She is a character from the comics.
I know her.
She,
the long Halloween is one of the best Batman comics ever.
And it was not the basis for the Batman,
but it was very like inspired by the Batman.
It's a detective story that takes place on Halloween.
She was introduced in the long Halloween part two by Jeff Loeb and Tim
sale.
And as a very similar,
you know,
my boss's daughter type role um i don't
remember a ton of that story that comic i can it's in my storage unit i can go back and read it but
um she definitely for sure is a character in the comics beautiful um and then let's tell the people

Let's get back into the penguin so i love the moment
where they get back in the car and the radio's on and he's listening to dolly nine to five what a
subtle thing that almost again i don't want to give james gunn all the credit for something he
could have nothing to do with almost james gunny uh music is on point i'm gonna say that we get a call we have another song later
on and i'm like yep this is we're doing a good job and that is i think that always raises uh like a
show or a movie like a letter grade for me as if the music is really fucking good
and you're doing poppy stuff when you hear nine to five what do you think of honestly i just dolly i don't deadpool too he oh yeah hit it dolly he does
the thing i i love and but one of the weirdest things yesterday somehow that song came on or
i heard it or i saw the words nine to five and i was like i gotta listen to this song i could
just have to and i never had a chance to and it came on the next day dude what are the fucking
weird and then it ended with it too and i just turned it up day dude what are the fucking that's weird and then it ended with it too
and i just turned it up to like 28 on the fucking volume and i'm just fucking grooving around in my
living room with dolly and tell you what it's the perfect song to pick where it does get a laugh out
of us like the penguins listening to fucking dolly but then when they hit it for the credits too
you're like yeah everyone loves dolly come on let's be honest let's be honest dolly barton
fucking who doesn't
fuck with her i'm gonna go on a youtube rabbit hole i know you see him on twitter sometimes of
when she like it's i think barbara walters was kind of like being like weird to her and she just
she's like the nicest most wholesome human on the planet and you just smile and listen to dolly
speak so dolly speaking dolly singing no matter what dolly's doing i'm there maybe the next disney boys trip
has to be dolly boys when you go to dollywood dollyland i'm in i'm on dollywood i'm 100% in
for dollywood and this does kind of like you're building the character of oz and like he's a dude
who just likes to listen to dolly sometimes who doesn't you know and it like talking about
grounding him it does it makes him feel real him feel real. Like little things like that.
Little things like he has a fucking Dolly Parton CD in his CD tray.
Like that makes him feel a little real.
I even like when he pulls the car up to the Falcone residence and then she comes down.
She's like purple car.
You're like, it's actually plum.
And then when you thought they couldn't get any more like the Sopranos, they loop in his weird fucked up relationship with his senile mother.
And it's like, oh, my God, they're going all the way.
They're going full Sopranos.
And I loved it.
I wasn't complaining.
Even seeing that dynamic.
And she's like, what did you do?
What did you do?
I shot Alberto.
And it's like he's just telling her flat out the truth of the matter.
Seeing Vic in the background when she sees Vic. And she's like, he's just telling her flat out the truth of the matter. Seeing Vic in the background when she sees Vic and she's like, someone's in my house.
Ah, let's call the police.
Like that was all funny.
Him trying to introduce himself there.
You felt the secondhand awkwardness and embarrassment for him just being along for the ride the whole time.
He obviously serves as like our view of this whole world right now.
But I also love when she's like what are you
a weak little pussy boy oswalt you're a weak little pussy boy you can't run away from this
he's trying to get her to skip town and everything because he's like they know they're they're gonna
know and she tells him no go fucking get gotham go get everything you've worked for all these years
and puts him on his path i think we're gonna get a very Livia-esque kind of thing from her.
I don't think they're ever going to –
I don't think he's going to fucking try to suffocate her or anything like that.
But I think she's going to kind of be a puppet master for him in a way,
even though she is senile.
I think she's going to help him out.
I think she's like a positive limb for him.
I think she may be.
I think she may be but i i could see like
i could see it going downhill for her this season as well yeah it definitely could because at first
i'm thinking when he's entering that house we're getting um what's his name tommy's mom from
goodfellas who just doesn't understand yeah son's there just to give her a necklace and he loves
yeah i didn't i think he was gonna tell her everything like yeah i also like seeing that
house it just reminded me of like it looks like you drove to the Queens of Gotham.
Yes, 100%.
But she's like my big, strong bull.
And I'm thinking like, he's probably had that club foot his whole life.
He's probably had to fight through stuff his whole life.
She's probably had to deal with all the bad stuff he's done his whole life.
And she fucking rides for him.
And I appreciate the people that ride for this guy.
So I am very excited about his mom i wrote his mom
rules that was like my note i don't know what else to say his mom rules i also think my favorite line
delivery in the whole episode was in this scene when she's like what did he do to you and he's
like he laughed at me the way he says it is so good i that was another part of the character i
like i like that after he killed him he was mad and then
he was just like fuck like fine and then they cut it off because that is like he's not just this
heartless guy or didn't probably want to do it because there's yeah his whole life is now kind
of fucked for a bit but i just love that uh there's layers to this character here if alberto
yeah if alberto doesn't mock him i really don't think he shoots him there i don't think he was
so power hungry obviously he wants to be the king him, I really don't think he shoots him there. I don't think he was so power hungry.
Obviously, he wants to be the kingpin of Gotham.
But I think he would have played the game with Alberto for a little bit at least and probably thought this guy's going to get himself killed anyway.
I think that was the whole point of have him have a drink.
He's like, let's get him the drink.
It's going to get the drops, get the drops, you know, like that's it was smart.
And then he's just like, oh, fuck this.
We're just going to start shooting.
And then we meet Salvatore Moroney. He goes in to meet Salvatore. I think he's just like oh fuck this we're just gonna start shooting and then we meet salvatore maroney he goes in to meet salvatore i think he's at blackgate prison and salvatore
is played by clancy brown a tremendous actor who's been in so much over the years most notable to
people my age as the voice of mr crabs oh batman me boy you know he's hitting those um but i know him from so much obviously he was
in star wars not too long ago he was the devil character in the first bill burr episode he was
actually in the rebooted dexter when they rebooted dexter he was the villain for that season new
blood and he is right under the trinity killer john lithgow as like the best dexter villain oh
wow really just so fucking good yeah and he's been in obviously like legendary movies over the years as well.
But I know this was great casting.
Great, great casting.
Cause he's not a typical like mobster.
You don't look at him.
He's not typical.
Hey, Hey, what this, you know,
It's like, he is the line of,
is he a, that guy or he's so good at the, that guy.
He's like the goat, that guy. He's the, he, that guy yeah like the goat that guy he's the he he
might be the goat that guy what do you know him from so my thing that i always come back to and
i don't think of it at first i never do he's the garden shawshank shawshank so that is the first
thing and then he is he also in the green mile or do i just confuse the green mile and shawshank
uh no he's not in the green mile he's in ragnarok which
i forgot all about i he's always a voice excuse me so it's gotcha suit searcher is that the oh
the fire monster yeah yeah yeah but he is also in gen v which i know yes from the first episode
he has that yeah and i was looking at this guy and i'm like who the fuck is he and then i go
through his imdb here and you know he's in billions uh means apparently so much you forget
it's crazy yeah so he's all this guy yeah he's been working for years i think we have this rant
on him every single time he shows up because we do we definitely do he's been in a bunch of stuff
that we've recapped and we're just like glancy brown great name too just a great
fucking name glancy brown this is a glancy brown podcast glancy if you'd like to do an interview
with us we'll interview you about all of the shit that we have unfortunately forgotten that you were
in that we forget every time that you're you show up in some we're like oh yeah you said fucking
shawshank too he's in so much stuff he goes back to 83 it's unbelievable this guy just churning out content
and still giving great performances because this scene was really good as well where
he's like fuck off he's like i don't want anything to fucking do with you and penguin's like
i don't think you're in a position not to hear me out here and gives him the ring and he's very
confused on how he got the ring he doesn't know that it went down to alberto obviously he's been locked up the whole time but the creepy ass smile
a penguin gives him as he's leaving where he just like smiles through that fucking makeup and the
scar and everything another moment where i was like god damn the subtle things like that that
smile as he leaves or the stuff that are making me love this show. And I didn't realize until like right before
I hadn't thought about it.
I'm like, wait a minute.
He was playing the guy the whole time.
Like I thought he was legitimately looking to get.
I know I did too.
Become part of the crew and they had me
and that's just good fucking TV.
It's just good writing.
Yeah.
And like there's something to a lot of the shows
we've recapped recently don't really get
good until a few episodes in which is really weird sometimes we're always like all right
episode one and two you know they they had to put two out at once to make sure they hooked us
because it didn't really hook us till the end of episode two this show hooked us in five minutes
it reminds you like hey just put the interesting stuff at the start.
Let's start at the most interesting point in the story.
And that's what they did with the thing.
Oh, so fucking good.
Thank you, Matt Reeves.
I know he's not the showrunner on this.
Let me get the showrunner's name because I watched her the little after the.
Oh, yes.
And the way she talked about it was really fucking good.
Showrunner.
I think her name is Lauren something.
I want to give her her her credit here.
It's Lauren, Lauren LaFranc, which almost feels like it could be like a Falcone ask name.
And then we get this crazy scene where Oz spotsfia and her mob or gang from the car and then realizes he got a gun get out of there step on the gas they're trying to whack him
and he hides in the trunk comes back around and then gets into it with one of the members that
actually sees him guy gets hit by a fucking school bus that's crazy dude that's a meme i gotta
get that yes when we had the guy slitting his throat on fire for for dragons and that's become
it that's lives its own life i get tagged so many tweets because i guess i tweeted the gif out
that so many people use it and it just tags me and i'm like oh baby this thing did catch fire
bus run over me is football seasons here that could be used a million different times
that was a good like fight scene too where like the struggle of wrapping the seat belt around
him stabbing him with the fucking thing from the car and then him backing up into that and then
even the wave to the kids on the bus just like that felt very soprano z as well when tony would
get like hits put out on him he's just wrestling the guy and yes again for a comic book franchise it's not just all you know bat suits and fancy gadgets you can just have like
a street a gritty street fight which i appreciate and then we see sophia falcone not one to fuck
with she's got him in like a greenhouse and he's all naked and he's all fucking hairy he's got the
big penguin suit on they also said he wore a penguin dick at some point even though you don't
see it god colin farrell was like they made me a penguin dick at some point, even though you don't see it. Oh, God! Colin Farrell
was like, they made me a penguin dick, and they said, you're not
going to see it on screen, but we just, we wanted to
make a penguin dick. And he was like, alright,
I'll wear the penguin dick then.
I've never seen this before, where they take the
wire that fucking, you know,
Tony would go, hello, rat.
And they put it around his arm,
which they're literally clipping
his wings, and they're pulling it, and he's bleeding and screaming his head off.
They have the kid who was there that night, one of the kids who ratted on Penguin, and he's just fine ratting on the kid and being like, he's a liar.
Shoot him in the face.
She's fine shooting him in the face.
It's like, oh, my God.
And then, boom, car crash, cinder block on the gas pedal,
and you recognize the car from the one they throw Alberto into.
It's Alberto in there.
It's his payback, and he's got no ring on.
So they framed the Maroney crime family for the murder of Alberto.
So good.
Even the little debrief he has with Vic afterwards, he was like, come on.
I thought we talked about the head and stuff.
And Vic is like, I didn't know if I should go to the front the trachea the back i was thinking
of the spine he's oh all right all right all right all right kid enough and then they go and get
slush puppies which another i was like holy fuck slush puppies exist in the batman i love slush
puppies and everyone had the friend who did the suicide or whatever you call it where you mixed
all the flavors together and he like that is with someone i i'm probably one of those people who'd be like it's just so
much better it's not good when you're mixing together it's not just good it's better that's
such a good line i'm a snack boy we have our takes that we live and die on right and that's
one of uh the penguins takes and like they kind of allude to the plan but they don't really talk
about um are you are you going to be able to do this and he's like yeah i can do it and you're like oh he is he and it's like i thought you have to
like shoot a guy i didn't really say you have to like butcher a guy and go to a fucking mob house
and i know throw a card through the thing and like you're like oh and again this is tv this is
running and then when you go back you're like man i feel like i had a full hour where they built it
up they did some stuff behind the scenes and it all paid off in the end.
What a fucking concept, right?
What a concept.
Keep it going, DC.
Come on.
It was contained.
Like you said, like, I don't know if every episode we can expect to be this contained,
but like start to finish is the end of a story.
Like if this was just a Penguin mini story that they put out a one-off of,
it would serve that purpose totally well.
You'd be like, oh, cool.
That was a cool glimpse into the world of Oz Cobb.
But I'm excited to get more.
This is going to be a really fun show to recap, I think.
We get to recap a fucking mob show that takes place in Gotham City.
That's so cool.
That's so badass.
That's it, though.
That's all I had for the episode.
I don't know if you had any more notes
um but great start as good a start as i could have asked for for the penguin no i've had like
that that mafioso torch where they're doing something that is so like probably hurts so
much more than some of the other traditional torches you might see on the screen and i i
just appreciated that i at some point i couldn't even like listen anymore i was like all right
let's just get this over with like i couldn't watch them like ripping his arm apart and like they have me
hook on and sinker.
So I'm,
I'm expecting high things now.
Do you have any episodes?
It is.
I don't,
I could pull that up.
The penguin.
Cause I'm hoping it's not too many.
I feel like we have a good eight to 10.
I think we could do a nice tight,
awesome series on,
even if it was six,
I'd be fine.
We got eight.
Yeah.
We got eight. I can live with got it i could live with that and i believe screeners have been sent out to some critics i think critics there are critics that have seen the full season and have given a great
reviews like i've seen nothing bad about the people that have seen more than just episode one
i've seen a few and there was a few that were like tremendous great yada yada yada i don't know if like if this is like kind of the
bar we're gonna hit sold uh yeah it's gonna be one of my favorite shows of 2024 right agreed
agree and it's just fun watching colin farrell get to play around as the penguin yes like the
writing is a is a cherry on top for sure but watching him just act like he's fucking tony
soprano as the penguin i'm like oh this. And we've gotten exclusively good penguins.
I got to say Burgess Meredith,
the original in the sixties,
Danny DeVito,
an icon,
a legend in Batman returns.
And now Colin Farrell,
the penguin,
everyone talks about how the Joker,
like you play the Joker and you get nominated for an Oscar right away.
The penguins becoming a fucking real iconic role.
He's becoming the hipster well you know a lot
of people told a joke but you know it's you know oz yeah i even like there was a little line where
maybe it was alberto maybe it was someone else mocking him saying like what do you think they're
gonna throw a parade for you in the streets and it's like are you referencing fucking batman
returns right now i know that we're the parade in the first one but like yeah like um great little
nods and references like that i think we're gonna get a little more of that in the future too i saw
people saying like true batman fans will appreciate the little nods and stuff that's pointed out so
stay tuned next week again will be our secret wars recap because we've got no penguin until sunday
but after that we will be back for more penguin recaps. I'm actually going to have to do
next month, I think one or two penguin recaps from Europe. So we'll see how that works out.
I'm going to be very interested to see how this all plays out too. Cause I think like
when I like certain Marvel villains, like the, you know, the team man and that's your boy cap,
you don't like that. But if I start falling in love with Batman villains,
Batman's your dude. I don't know how. But if I start falling in love with Batman villains, Batman's your dude.
I don't know how we're going to.
Batman's rogues gallery.
I'm actually like,
I'm okay with that.
I make an exception.
I'm like,
you could fall in love with those films.
This will be very interesting.
This goes the next couple of months here.
All right,
everyone.
We'll see you next week.
Everyone go look for your sense of humor.
It's got to be around here somewhere.
