Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, My Mom's Basement listeners. You can find our episodes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube, and Prime members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. Hello and welcome to My Mom's Basement and a very special Lanterns recap edition of My Mom's Basement with the professor back, Jose Youngs. We're excited to have him back. We wanted to get him in the basement to break this down.
Starting point is 00:00:21 That's a good episode to get him in here because a lot happened on Lanterns this week. How are we doing, Jose? I'm great, man. I'm really excited to talk about Green Lantern. I don't know how much you guys like Green Lantern, like the character. Green Lantern, and I'll just, I'm sure you, I don't know if you were going to ask this, but I have, like, I'll just talk about it. Like Green Lantern fans are so interesting in the comic book world. It's really the only superhero that I, from my perspective, like, everyone like has their favorite James Bond.
Starting point is 00:00:53 Like, oh, what's your favorite James Bond? That Green Lantern is like the only conversation you can have like that. There's no who's your favorite Superman. who's your favorite Batman? Like, who's your favorite Green Lantern? Like, I grew up on Kyle Rainer. And that's our pal T. Bob, who came on the podcast a few weeks ago, said the exact same thing.
Starting point is 00:01:09 I was talking about how much he loved Kyle Raynor and the parallax version of Hal. And I feel like that might just be that age range. Like, if you grew up in 90s, you're probably a Kyle Rainer lanterns guy, right? 100%. Because Hal Jorn was super evil until, like, 2000, like, mid-2000s with, like, the rebirth, which is amazing but then there's also Alan Scott, there's John Stewart, there's Killawad, there's Sinestro, there's
Starting point is 00:01:34 all these other Green Lanterns that have existed that everyone has an opinion on. And I know people that only read Green Lantern. Like that's the only thing they read. Like if you like outside of like Batman, Superman Wonder Woman, you probably read other things. Green Lantern is very
Starting point is 00:01:50 much like I only read Green Lantern. Like those people are like the Star Trek fans of comic books. Like I really I really like Star Trek. I was going to say like Dave Matthews band fans when they're like, oh yeah, Dave. I saw they changed his belt buckle this week. Like they go to 28 shows a year at fucking Saratoga. Like there's just that kind of fandom is so fascinating.
Starting point is 00:02:14 And the lore is probably some of the best lore you'll ever get in comic books. And if you like, if you like Green Lantern, I've, you read comic books, essentially. Like it is a good barometer for are you a comic book? That's a buck-knower book. It's a real book-knowers book right there. And I find it interesting too because Robbie, I think when this show first got announced when we were giving our takes on it, he's like, yeah, we might piss off some of the lanterns people. They're a little different. I remember saying that.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And just like the battles you could have, there is probably, I can only imagine the amount of internet ink that was spilled on the fact that John Stewart and how we're going to be the two for this show and blah, blah, blah. And I love it. I love discourse that I am not involved with, and I just know there's sort of action behind it. Oh, yeah. Green Lancer fans are. I feel like even when this show got announced and they were saying that there's going to be two lanterns,
Starting point is 00:03:07 people were like, wait, how does that work? Because there's the only one that could have the lantern, and you go into that. But I think there have been stories with multiple lanterns in them. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That almost universally. Like, there's the lantern core where there's like,
Starting point is 00:03:20 the Green Lanterns are essentially the Jedi. Like, there's the Guardians, and then there's the space cock. There's who can wield the lightsaber slash ring. There's trainees. There's like essentially if you just copy paste lanterns to Jedi, you get the same story, which would make Kyle Jordan the perfect vater
Starting point is 00:03:38 because it becomes parallax and Kyle Rainer. Essentially like a Luke Skywalker type thing. And then was it actually parallax or was his mind just corrupted? It's a whole thing with Green Lantern. But yeah, there's usually always two. because it's not a trainee situation. It's like you're the backup in case how Jordan has to like go into like the Andromeda Galaxy or it gets hurt.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Like because originally Guy Gardner was the backup and then he gets hurt and then John Stewart becomes the backup to replace the backup type situation. There always needs to be someone. Yeah, exactly. What's that, uh, the goalie, the e-woke or whatever, the emergency. Oh, yeah. John Stewart was the e-bug for a minute. That's so funny.
Starting point is 00:04:23 That's a great one. That's so funny. I'm glad you said the Jedi thing because we've noticed that throughout the show, the parallels between them where you're like, all right, they want you to remove all attachments and remove all fear and fears the pathway to the dark side kind of stuff. And it seems like the guardians, at least what Teabob also, who's a huge lanterns fan, came on and talked to us about it. He said they a lot of times have the right intentions and the wrong execution of what they're going for. And that feels like the Jedi. Yeah, and then I literally watch episode one and they end up in Rushville. I'm like, they're just back on Tatooine again.
Starting point is 00:05:01 It's a desert town in a small town where nothing happens and the Jedi show up and they're like, can you please leave? I'm like, this is Tatooine. Anyway. Yeah. I feel like Kyle Chandler's Hal is maybe he could become parallax and that become that Vader. But I've seen even people. comparing him to quigon and i kind of see that in that is he sort of a gray lantern and is he's not
Starting point is 00:05:28 always listening to the guardians he's slamming cars at the polls with john stewart in the passenger seat he's doing some things that you're like i don't know if that's like what the lantern should be upheld to but it's working for i think it's and i'm sure we'll get to it when we're talking about this but the end when john stewart's like oh it kind of corrupted his mind and stuff like that at the end when he turns down the ring. That is, that has to be the first seed for Parallax. Because Parallax, I don't know if, what did you say, T. Bobbi? I don't know if he talked about it.
Starting point is 00:06:00 But Parallax, the entity was retcons in the comic books. So originally it was when Emerald Twilight happened and Hal Jordan killed all the lanterns and took all their rings and then killed Sinestro and then wiped out the core and that's how Kyle Rainer got the ring. That was eventually retconned in. Jeff Johns is Green Lantern run. And I'll talk about it briefly. If you tell me that Jeff Johns' Green Lantern run
Starting point is 00:06:26 is the single greatest run in DC Comics history, ever. I will not argue that. Wow. It is he, I have never seen a cat, because Green Lantern was struggling, and then Jeff Johns took it, and now it was up there with Mr. Merrick,
Starting point is 00:06:48 with Tompkins Nightwing, with the vision. It is that level. And I know Reddit did like the best comic books of like the first 20 years or something like that of the 2000s. And it was like Jeff Johns's Green Lantern was number one. Is Hal the main Green Lantern in his? So that's, so that he brings Hal back. And he retcons parallax.
Starting point is 00:07:10 So for people that weren't aware, Hal Jordan kills all the Green Lantern's because Coast City was destroyed by Mongol and death of Superman. and he went crazy because if you replace CoCity with Padmay, he goes crazy because he's the perfect Greenland because he's Darth Vader. That was eventually retcons where parallax, the yellow like virus infected him. So it wasn't he went crazy with sadness. It's an actual virus infected his mind and made him crazy.
Starting point is 00:07:43 And then when they got the virus out, he became a hero again. And so that is what Jeff Johns introduced retcon to Parallax. He retcons this, he made the senestro core, which is like the yellow, like they work off of fear. They made, he made Sinestro like this fascist dictator. So you have this intergalactic war between the green and the yellow lanterns. He introduced the emotional spectrum, which is like the land, which is green, yellow. There's the red lanterns, which is like anger. Blue drinks?
Starting point is 00:08:14 Essentially, yes. Essentially, yes. So we got the red lanterns, which is atrocious, atrocious. I never know how to pronounce the name. There's the, there's blackest night, which fucking slaps. Batman, right? Where he's one of them. But then you get like, he's the, he's one of the leaders at one point where like the black
Starting point is 00:08:35 ring can raise the dead and you get like a zombie army of lanterns. Then there's the white ring where it's like the antithesis. There's the pink ring with love. There's the orange ring with like courage. It's awesome. It was amazing. And then so he really did retcon almost everything about the Green Lanterns and everything landed.
Starting point is 00:08:54 I know James Gunn talks about making up the like origin of the infinity stones for Guardians too. He's like, yeah, I kind of wrote that up in 10 minutes. You talking about this and like, did he take inspiration from this for like there's going to be the soul stone, there's going to be the space stone and they're all in charge of different things and they all have different colors associated with them? Is there any part of them you think that was like a little bit like he's a comic reader? He probably read Jeff Johns Greenlander.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Probably took some aspects of that. That is kind of like the rings did the the stones did do things in the comic books. But you didn't. They weren't as O.P. As the movies, but they did do things. Okay. But you'd have, you'd have to assume anything outside of that. And then people have tried to do this.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Like they tried to do the green arrow thing. They tried to do the flash thing. they're trying to make all these teams. And like no one can do it as good as Jeff Johns did. He's the man. It would be crazy if you build up to that point. And it becomes almost, I know people say like a Thrones-esque thing where people have their houses that they like and everything is intertwined.
Starting point is 00:10:03 I mean, this show is doing crazy numbers. Maybe it's doing numbers good enough where Lantern Season 2 is about that. And you dive deeper to Sinestro. I mean, we still got half a season in this too. like they might be setting that up here where it becomes clear by the end of the season. And like the Sinestra ring, the yellow ring was also kind of retcon too, which is another great thing because Guy Gardner had the yellow ring in the 90s. Like if you read Death of Superman, Guy Gardner is the Green Lantern,
Starting point is 00:10:30 but he has the yellow ring and he has like a leather jacket and jeans because it's the 90s and it's extreme. And the bull cut, of course. And the bowl cut of course. So like that was retconned as well. he's the one that made the guardians like kind of like the guardians in the show are are what Jeff Johns wrote
Starting point is 00:10:49 like before they were before they were very like mystical type things and now they're like kind of almost arrogant like what we see in the show is what Jeff Johns did like almost to a T outside of being freakishly tall they're usually like small Yoda type people
Starting point is 00:11:07 yeah yeah T Bob told us the same thing about the small like size I kind of like that scene where she grows, but it also could have been shrunk down. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true. Before we dive deep into the episode, let's remind everyone about Draft Kings. The weight is over. Football is here, and so is draft Kings.

Starting point is 00:13:30 All right. So Lantern's episode five. It's called Lights Out. Opens in 2007, a time period we have not yet seen. And as soon as they flash that, you're like, all right. I'm lock it in because obviously they're about to do a reveal. And it's Kerry coming into Rushville. We see the Rushville sign and everything.
Starting point is 00:13:47 She's being followed when she gets to the diner. There's people already basically waiting for her there. And they're like, we fucking killed your dad because he was a snitch. They're threatening her and who comes into save her. But Zoe, looking at the exact same age, she looks in 2016, might I add. And they get to the point where she fucking cuts off her own pinky. Didn't like seeing that. Two minutes into the show,
Starting point is 00:14:09 squeamish. That was like hard to see. And she saves her and basically says one day people are going to come after me and I'm going to need your help. I'm going to need someone with your gritty sense of the world to defend me. Will you help me? Will you pledge your allegiance? She says yes.
Starting point is 00:14:26 She's like, all right. Let's grow you a new pinky. And they fucking hit the title card on you. I think they hit the title card there. Awesome intro. Jose, is there any connection with the Gotham stuff with her saying say hi to Barb? Her last name's Kane. Is there any Batwoman connection there?
Starting point is 00:14:41 Not only do you think there's Batman, but like people haven't, I haven't seen enough discourse where like Kane is Martha Wayne's maiden name. It's Martha Kane married Thomas Wayne and became Martha Wayne. So like there's so many avenues you could go into. But I, God, I hope there's a Batwoman like or Batman type situation because it's so James gone. Like we're not going to show you Batman yet. but we're going to show you that woman instead.
Starting point is 00:15:11 Which is like infuriating, but like at least we're going that direction. But yet you'd have to assume. You'd have to. On the phone, say how to barb. Clems, she said how to barb. Maybe she was talking with the stranger things barb. Actually, no, she was in the 80s. So I love, I love, love, love the just like the time skips and like the constant like foreshadowing.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I love that. I might have gasped when I saw 2007 there. I was like, oh, we're doing a new year. It's, I still remember when the five years later in, uh, infinity and game, the entire gasping of the theater. I'll never forget that for the rest of my life. Uh, by the way, I was like, when, when the pinky gets chopped off, I was like, do I have to go back now and see that their pinky was missing this one fucking time?
Starting point is 00:16:04 I thought the same thing. I was like, this show was pretty good. Yeah. Stuff show. or something. Yeah. Or it would be shot from a completely different angle when you couldn't see it. And I'm like, these mother, this fucking Lindeloff motherfucker.
Starting point is 00:16:15 But then they're like, let's grow back. I'm like, all right, we're dealing with the alien technology. Also, Zoe, just like absolute badass. And then you're like, all right, I kind of am rooting for you. But you're the Manhunter and I've heard how bad you are. So it really did muddy the waters very well there, I thought. The whole episode did. Between her, between John, between Hal, everyone had rightful justifications for their
Starting point is 00:16:38 actions, I thought. Totally. And like I talked to Tommy and Glennie. I talked to some people after the episode and they were like, are you afraid people are going to view John as like a villain? I think there's a lot of the show left where I don't think that is going to be the way they view him by the end of the show. But even in this episode, I didn't really view him as a villain. Yes, I love Kyle Chandler and he's playing Hal as the most likable guy in the world. So when John is the foil to his plan sometimes that you thought would maybe work out, sure. But like by the end of the episode, when John fucking skipping ahead throws the ring. I'm kind of on his side.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Totally. I'm going to tell you guys right now. If this parallax, again, I don't know this power. I don't know enough about parallax. And I'm sure he does some pretty wretched stuff, it sounds like. It's Kyle Chandler. I might be rooting for Parallax when it's like at some point, you got to just go with your guy, right? Like, there was rumors before the season that like the Knicks could never get Janus in a pack in a cat package.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Maybe they'd change Jalen Brussels. And I'm like, oh, then I just stop rooting for the Knicks. Jay, like, you gotta go with the girl that brought you to the dance kind of thing. Kyle Chandler, I've been at the dance with him since Friday Night Lights. That's my fucking guy. If he's killing the lanterns, then fuck the lanterns, fuck the guardies. I don't care. Kyle, I am a Kyle Chandler guy.
Starting point is 00:17:50 I've already become a Thanos guy. I'll become a paradox guy. Oh, and a snap, too. It's crazy. It's so crazy that you said that because, like, to tangent really quickly, there is an unbelievable DC Marvel. crossover classic issue where Kyle Rainer and Silver Surfer are pitted against each other by Parallax and Thanos.
Starting point is 00:18:14 Oh, what? It's fucking awesome, dude. It's so sick. Thanos approaches Kyle Rainer and Parallax approaches Silver Surfer, and they're both, obviously, they don't know who they are, right? And Thanos is like, I'm a good guy. Like, come help me. I need to, I need your room.
Starting point is 00:18:34 And Kyle Rainer's like, yeah. That makes sense. And then same thing with Parallax and Silver Surfer. And then they fight. And then they realize what's happening. And they team up and they win. And then there's this force of energy that's inside a cardboard box. And if anyone has read DC versus Marvel from like 1996, you know what that cardboard box means.
Starting point is 00:18:56 But that issue slats. And it's so interesting that you brought up Parallax and Thanos because they are so, they are so, like, equal signs towards each other across the pond all right i guess i'm flat out i'm just announcing it boys planting the flag parallax guy right here right this big parallax guy right big parallax guy right then john stewart wakes up in the car he does have another accent slip in this episode fuck you the way he said you and he said that i was like oh there's the british accent again um and hal kind of walks up and explains he made him call Anton to the diner as a distraction. And they're going to be able to pit Anton and his crew against William Macon while Hal goes after the real target, Zoe. So a little
Starting point is 00:19:45 bit of a convoluted plan, but I liked it. I enjoyed how kind of like thought out it all was. He also throws in that lanterns don't kill. I feel like that was a big, that was one line in the midst of the rant, but I felt like that was something that we're going to have to think about going forward the militias gearing up in the town and everything um a good scene between them and another one where should he have maybe taken john stewart out of the car to make sure that car didn't light on fire a few seconds later yeah but i kind of get what he's saying he's like this guy just fucking betrayed me he's coming after the ring i'm trying to save this whole town everyone's telling me to leave you know everyone's thrown up in chaos in their minds yeah that was uh
Starting point is 00:20:29 i'm glad you brought up making because there's a big thing theory that he becomes black hand because it's William Hand becomes his black hand with blackest ring and there's like all these things like since no one the hospital is like not really there it's like a fake hospital like do people die and he just brings because there's also I saw an interview with him where he's like yeah I got to wear a ring and everyone was like when when did he's talking about his like wedding ring to Zoe or is he talking about I don't know no he said he got to wear a lantern ring so everyone's like oh is this
Starting point is 00:21:01 William Hans. Is this the blackest night right here? So that's a big theory too, especially because he got his heart cut out. So he's like dead, dead. But like if you zombie him, that would be crazy. I like that actor too. He's such a good actor. And I feel like he's big enough that he shouldn't just be a thoroughway player.
Starting point is 00:21:21 So that was a big possibility too, which is also why like he was fine with people dying because you could just bring him back. So that's a big thing. theory too. Yeah, crazy scene. Crazy scene. Everything you're saying. And then the car does burst into flames while Zoe watches. That was fucking, that was cold. It was hot, but it was
Starting point is 00:21:41 cold. So like when you have him still in the car, you're like, I can't believe he's still in the car. Then it's on fire. Then she comes. You're like, oh, now she's going to save him. And then she just lets him just burn up. And I was like, this fucking show, man, it really does. And it goes in a direction
Starting point is 00:21:57 that I guess we want other shows to go and they just never have. And I guess you're just quality TV, man. We are eating good every single week. I am never going to complain about, like, even if they don't stick the landing here, they've given me so much. This felt like a season finale, boys.
Starting point is 00:22:14 It definitely did. I was like, I can't believe we have three more left. I go, wait, is this episode at least six maybe? Yeah. We have three more left. Oh, my God. It's unreal. I love everything about the, yeah, Clem nailed it.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Like, as soon as it was over, I'm like, oh, the season's over. Yeah. I know, Jose, you haven't watched the series, but Jeff texted me and said it felt very much like a Watchman episode to him, almost like there's a big reveal episode in Watchmen that has kind of similar vibes to this one. And when he said that, I could definitely see the comparison there.
Starting point is 00:22:50 So I do think so. And then Clem, I think a Clem theory from episode one that I gave you a lot of shit for is coming to, through wish in here because Zoe goes up to her grandson and talks about having to be seen without being seen or see without being seen. And she tells them a lot of people are going to die today. And he says, are you going to die? She says, maybe, but don't forget everything I told you.
Starting point is 00:23:18 And in this scene, I'm like, Clem put a fucking child on the Suss List episode one. And I think this kid has some kind of Manhunter connection or something where when we skip forward to 2026. Did someone come after Hal for revenge, if that is the real Hal body or whatever? I think this kid's a fucking manhunter, or at least half. Bob, our girl Zoe says
Starting point is 00:23:40 she, the manhunter gave her a miracle. And you're thinking, you know, it saved her life out of the blue. Maybe that's the miracle. Or maybe it's a goddamn alien baby in her belly that she fucking raised. And now it is Manhunter 2.0, half manhunter. Whatever you want to call it, Bob.
Starting point is 00:23:57 he's number one on the suss list. He's number one. The original Manhunter. We know the manhunter. Gonzo now replaced son of Manhunter. Yeah. So it is weird because this was like a finale. So you reset, it's like, do we reset the suss list?
Starting point is 00:24:12 Yeah, when you skip 10 years forward, this kid is going to be like, like, said he's fucking a number one recruit on the team or whatever. He's going to be a problem. He's the starting quarterback, right? And I was like, that kid, no chance that fucking bum with that noodle arm. could make even with a town of a thousand people to make starting quarterback and bob's here like oh kids are innocent that's just someone who doesn't have kids i know kids i got you i know they're not all innocent man they are diabolical quick tangent i'll try to wrap this story up as quick as possible we make sienna put her phone in the kitchen at night because we don't want her scrolling at night
Starting point is 00:24:50 you know because then she'll stay up all in that attention and we have all these locks to like turn it off but she can find ways around because they're kids she put her phone. So I go out to, like, the kitchen before I go to bed. I see her phone charging. I'm like, all right, whatever, go to bed. My wife in the morning is like, yeah, Sienna just was on her phone. And I'm like, I go, no, her phone was out in the kitchen.
Starting point is 00:25:10 She took the case off, put it upside down and put the wire. And it looked like it was charging. And she had the phone out on her own. And I'm like, yo, she's 11. And like, you got to respect that. Oh, no, I said to where I go, listen, I got to like, what is it? Like, I apologize. I didn't, you know, understand your game.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Wasn't familiar with your game. Yeah. Like, I, she's, she's always been a sweet kid from day one, too. So it's like, you never think she's going to deceive you. She pulled like a grown-ass man veteran move on my ass. I said tip of the cap right there. Now we have to, like, readjust out.
Starting point is 00:25:46 We're now going to locker. We're making half-time adjustments with parents. And this fucking suss motherfucker out in Rushville or whatever, those Midwestern motherfuckers are the most suss of all. So, yeah. I'm not going to say I know that I'm not going to do my victory lap still feel bad for putting Sparky the dog from Wanda Vision on the Susslet. But at least everyone's antennae are up, thanks to me. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:07 She's basically a lantern. She made a fucking phone construct and put it on the counter. Speaking of constructs and holograms, Hal talks to his own halogram. And I loved that the halogram liked John Stewart more than Hal did. He's like, I like that kid. like he has his head on the shoulders, right? Like he was like a fan of him just from that one conversation. And Kerry comes to shoot him as cover.
Starting point is 00:26:35 She's like, they're watching. I have to fucking pretend to shoot you right now. Reveals that she owes Zoe and begs and pleased with Hal to just leave and save all the lives in the town because she's like, Zoe would be willing to take out all these bodies if it meant she could stay alive. So there's a dilemma with that, obviously. And then at the same time, John wakes up with Zoe in the hospital. She just let him burn.
Starting point is 00:26:58 And the makeup they did, a CGI, I'm sure it's a combination of both, looked fantastic on him. But he says, I don't trust the Guardians. You know, they created the Manhunters. She plans on killing Hal by wasting all the battery life on the ring. And she wants to tell the Guardians or she wants him to tell the Guardians that Hal like died honorably taking Anton's team away or whatever. Is the low battery on the ring a common theme in the comic books? Yes, for sure. It's very reminiscent of back of the day Thor needed to hold his hammer to be Thor.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Otherwise, he would just be Donald Blake, the human. It was a way to kind of nerf Green Lancer and not be so Opie. It's why they add like weird weaknesses to all the rings. So otherwise, if you just do whatever you want. Yeah, because it was, it did feel almost like phoenesque in this episode at times when they're like, percent battery and you that i've never heard bring the lantern with you at that yeah yeah there's a like that's kind of like kyle became a little op in the like early late 90s early 2000s where like he had like a like a reserve charge in the rain just in case type thing they had kind of had to
Starting point is 00:28:10 dial that back a bit but i do remember like especially if you read the original like when when kyle rayner becomes green lantern and after the whole fringing situation and woman in the fridge uh he's like fighting major force and he's like what do you and then he loses his power he's like what do you mean there's no juice left and like that's he has to fight major force without the ring for a bit and then he finds an asteroid and then it turns into the lantern uh i feel like everyone has that one friend that's phone is always on low battery and they're asking for a charger in this show hal is that friend he's just constantly on low battery this guy's got to fucking charge up that's right he doesn't plug that thing in before he goes to sleep
Starting point is 00:28:51 Ironically, that's my goddamn daughter, Sienna, the one who pulled the phone. She's got 3% battered. She puts her phone next to the charger at night with 3%. And then she's like, she's stealing chargers. We have a whole situation. I'm going to stop. I realize where this is going. I have to say, though, and it's kind of going back to Sienna.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Young Hal, just like young Sienna, is so charming and delightful. I love Young Hal. And I'm like, if we do get young Kyle Chandler in this show or future, you know, movies or shows, I just love that guy, man. He's just so delightful. Is that what Hal is like in the books? Is he closer to this Howe that we have that's a little more grizzled or does he have like a, you know, a little more charm to him? No, Hal is what John Stewart is in the show. Oh, that's right. Yeah, like cold and everything.
Starting point is 00:29:42 John is the John at the end of this episode when he turns the ring back. that's the John Stewart I know from the comedy. Yeah. Where he's like, F you. Like, I don't want to whatever like that. He's the architect. He's like the one that rebels against, like, leadership. Yeah, he's the guy.
Starting point is 00:30:01 That's the John Stewart I know. I like this, how, though. It's a, it's very like Tony Stark, we'll call it, Jack Sparrow type vibes where he's like, this is just a fun thing to play. Yeah. And, Jose, we've talked about it the first five episodes here, but obviously, like, don't you just feel that we're just getting such a well-built character for all the future DCU movies? Like, he's better constructed than Superman right now.
Starting point is 00:30:31 And it's Batman. It's not even their fault, really. But it's like he has a full eight-episode Lindelof show to come out. And the writing has been tremendous. The writing has been tremendous where they've been dropping hints about. future shows and movies that you like when they're talking about there's only 14 races who can shape shift and replicate a human and then there's i'm like well one of them is a martian and if we're talking about martians and manhunter's like where is this going right now and then
Starting point is 00:31:01 when oh i have this huge thing i think that kid the the the noodle-armed mouth-breathing idiot that that clem was talking about i'm like that after this episode i'm like that kid might be Martian Man Hunter. That kid might be Martian Manhunter. That would be wild. Because like Anton and everyone, was that his name? Yeah. The one where he's like, remember he shows how or he shows John the genocide and you don't
Starting point is 00:31:27 really hear it. You don't see it, but you can like hear it. I'm like, well, what's the pain of it? And I'm like, well, the white Martians did wipe out the green Martians. Are these the remnants of the green Martians? And then he's like, we tried to. I would love that. And then he's like, remember when he was talking.
Starting point is 00:31:44 to make and he's like and making was pretending he's like what was our kids name he's like we couldn't conceive i'm like so was the tradeoff for regrowing your finger and protecting you you have to sire my martian child which is like a surrogate so you're telling me there's a possibility that a martian and a manhunter had a kid and it becomes martian manhunter there you go brilliant Absolutely brilliant. That was my third. But like, that's what the show is doing to me. Like, I'm just like seeing things that might not be there, but like I need them to be there.
Starting point is 00:32:21 By the way, I want to shout out. I was going to say Chris Mundy is the actual showrunner. Lindelof is a producer and he wrote some of it. Chris Mundy is the showrunner. And he was a producer for 44 episodes on Ozark. And he came straight to this. I think he also did. I think he did.
Starting point is 00:32:39 he did 101 episodes of the original criminal mind series as well he produced the latest season of true detective which it's not one of his greatest things on the list um but you do 100 episodes of criminal minds and then 44 episodes of ozark that leads to a show like this i think for sure and then you're inspired by true detective and no country for old man and injecting that you know energy into the show for sure totally definitely um hal walks into the diner bodies every everywhere. It's massacred. Anton is in there. And this is where the plant starts coming at the place. So Hal tells him it's William Macon and you got to go after William Macon. And I loved this little exchange where Anton's like, hmm. So they must have been having coitus, William and John, because that's
Starting point is 00:33:27 what the alpha does. They seek out, you know, and they try to assume that thing. And Hal just can't let like his pride like down in that moment. He's like, well, I mean, they had a little bit, but it's mostly me. They're, you know, on the alpha. Like, they were mostly coming after me as the alpha. That was really funny, I thought, when they're talking about that being involved. And then you have that really funny exchange intercut with John Stewart burnt to a fucking crisp. And Zoe going on this, like, deep emotional, like, not really emotional. She's kind of cold as she delivers it.
Starting point is 00:34:00 But this monologue about how she chose her form to put herself through adversity, the form of, like, an Indian woman in Nebraska and to talk. talking about the strength that that builds and everything. And you're going back and forth between, not back and forth, but you were straight from like kind of like Hal making a gay joke to like that serious, really deep conversation. It was a funny dichotomy. That's the line when she's like, or that. And then when Anton confronts making, he's like, oh, it's weird that you took a position
Starting point is 00:34:33 of power or whatever. Usually you don't. Usually you need like, you like the weaker side. so you can experience like the culture. I'm like, oh, so you mean like a child who can't throw a football? I'm like, and at that point I was like, Jose, what are you doing? But I'm like, the more I watch the show, I'm like, it has to be. This has to be the thing.
Starting point is 00:34:54 But I can't put it out there because I might be wrong. But like it's the tea leaves are there. Wow. I was going to say before, this is almost like this show for Jose is like what Wanda vision was for Marvel fans who are like, Oh my God, this show is good, but there's all these little breadcrumbs. And then none of those breadcrumbs ended up meeting a fucking thing. That's literally what I think. Well, you know what's so funny?
Starting point is 00:35:18 Anton in this show, people thought was going to be that red lantern antinuous or whatever you said. Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. There were theories about that. So in this episode, it becomes pretty clear that those theories are not going to come to fruition. And I was reminded of something that I hadn't thought of in years, Clem. Someone said lanterns finally has its own aerospace. engineer. Do you remember when they mentioned an aerospace engineer in WandaVision? We were like, Reed Richards is in the universe. And it was just an aerospace engineer.
Starting point is 00:35:48 That's amazing. We pinned such a, we're like, all right, well, the date having the heart on it might not mean anything. And Mephisto might show up in season two of Wanda Vision. But the aerospace engineer is definitely really. That's a hundred percent. No doubt. That's Reed. Yeah. It would take us another six years to get Reed Richards in the MCU. It's not even close. I mean, when they say this is, you know, the DCU true detective, it is because it's like Jose's brain is doing what everyone on Reddit did where they're putting all the things and Yellow King means this means that and it's just a perv fucking Walmart man. That's right. Like I'm like and like all my theories could be moot next. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:31 That's why it's amazing. And the line I had a shout out. Our boy Hal. When you're like us, you know, it's less about preference. It's more about opportunity, about, you know, who is having to be it. Which is weird because I think Hal Jordan had like this, it's the only awful thing I don't like about how Jordan. I can't remember her name, but there were some, like, weird tension between like this.
Starting point is 00:36:52 I'm going to use air quotes because she's an alien underage green lantern. Oh. Was she underage? I'm like, you, if. What era was this 90s? No, this was like way before parallax. Yeah. I'm like, dude, you can't say that line.
Starting point is 00:37:07 if you know enough about Hal Jordan. That's real weird. Don't like that. I don't like that. Don't like that. But it's like an alien weird. It's a whole thing, yeah. I have to ask Jose this.
Starting point is 00:37:21 And I think I've had the question answered probably by Jose. Teabot might have mentioned it. Might have come up on the show. I can't remember this. Abin-Sir. Who the fuck's Abin-Sir again? I know it's important. Abencer was the lantern.
Starting point is 00:37:36 again another thing that Jeff John's kind of retconned so Avincer was the green lantern before Hal Jorny so Hal Jordan has Aventer's ring that's the other kind of big trench switch up from the comic book lore and the
Starting point is 00:37:52 and the show lore is the guardians don't choose the lanterns the ring chooses the lantern so the ring lands and it's like within seconds like you die your heart stops the ring flies off and finds a new person so So Abencer crashes on Earth and find, and it's essentially between Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan to be the next Green Lantern.
Starting point is 00:38:15 And he chooses Hal Jordan, which is like a thorn in Guy Gardner's side, which is, I'm hoping, plays into this show because like not only were you the backup, you were the second choice backup, which is so perfect for Guy Gardner run. That's exactly the type of thing he would be in the comic book. So he becomes the Green Lantern. Avincer at the time had just crashed. And he, because Hal Jordan was the like test pilot for the Marines or military something. He wasn't, he was just that. So that was it. Like he just crashed and landed in like somewhere near Coast City, ring selected Hal Jordan.
Starting point is 00:38:51 And it's not, are you afraid? That's the other. That's the difference I don't quite like. It's you might be afraid. But the ring kind of speaks in your mind and is like, you have. the strength you just don't know it yet like yeah you will like when the time comes you will overcome fear it's not there's no litmus test the ring tells you like you have it in you whether you know it or not um so that just kind of becomes that and then jeff johns kind of recond it so he crashes outside
Starting point is 00:39:22 and it's essentially i think it's sinestro or atrocious or something like that i can't quite remember but it's it's it's Ben Rekon. And they come and kill him? Yeah, like there was like an attack and they like, they blew up the ship and landed by Hal Jordan. I can't quite remember who did it. But yeah, that's been Rekon too. Because in this, they reveal like Zoe, like he realizes like, oh, you killed Abincer.
Starting point is 00:39:51 And I was the hunter because she was, I guess, just out for survival. They're programmed for survival in all of these moments. I also didn't love when she puts the blood in his eyeball. That just made my eyes water almost as much as the pinky cup made me squeamish. This whole episode is getting me a little bit. The machine heals them. They also make a note that it took a sample from him too. I was like in his arm.
Starting point is 00:40:15 I was like, is that coming back? What was that sample that that machine took? And what could that even possibly be used for if it does come back? I don't know. Is it that that's the other thing. I'm like, oh, is that Martian Man Hunter? Are we getting growing? Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:40:30 This is Marsha Mephisto we're dealing with right now. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's going to drive me absolutely insane. And then, like, did you guys talk about how his, like, affinity for the birds and everything? I'm like, oh, they're just going to do the hawk girl romance, like, right out of the gate because he loves birds. No, we didn't really talk about that. Although I didn't realize, so I just looked up Lantern Showrunner to try to get Chris Mundy's name. Did you guys know when you look up lanterns-related stuff, a green bird flies across the Google screen?
Starting point is 00:40:59 I like that. I like that. Yeah, I just found that out. I kind of like that too. I like the scene where she calls William and they have like their final phone call where they're speaking the alien language to each other and it's like they're goodbye and he's like grateful to have pledged himself.
Starting point is 00:41:14 I thought that was good. And even the scene where the first guy comes in as a human bomb and you know, they all have the fucking bombs in them. And he's like, I'm just looking for directions or whatever. Boom. And then it's just off to the races from there. The militia follows. Anton goes into the, the Megan home, and he starts quizzing, William, on all the first thing I said to you.
Starting point is 00:41:36 What was the last thing I said to you? That was so good. And you felt the tension between him. Even when he fucking cuts his heart out, goes Temple of Doom on his ass, Kalima, and realizes it's not the crystal heart. I thought that was great. I really like the guy that plays Anton. I know he's like one of those guys we were talking about. He was in the wire.
Starting point is 00:41:54 He's definitely one of those guys that, like, leveled up. his scenes just by his presence. Oh, for sure. Yeah, he was like a proper actor. Yeah. Someone's like, if you see this guy in an HBO show, you know you're about to get like a plus material from whatever show you're watching. It's a legit show if they have this guy.
Starting point is 00:42:13 And then, I mean, again, I've only seen him in The Wire and this, maybe one other show on HBO I'm talking about. And it's like, yeah, batting 1,000 for sure. Yeah. And then Dilla Hunt as Macon as Macon was fucking great too. He's no country for old men guy. and you can see the experience he has. The heart with the pinky, with the blood drop and the burn.
Starting point is 00:42:35 Like, this was a pretty, like, this was a tough. Weirdly, the blood, the heart was the easiest that went down for me. Oh, yeah. I didn't even watch the heart. I was, like, staring at the corner. I did this on Monday morning because the Giants were playing Sunday night, so I couldn't watch it at night. And, like, again, it's like, when you're eating breakfast and watching,
Starting point is 00:42:54 it's like a little more, I was like, oh, I can't keep doing this. And I'm like, we're probably going to be cutting. another hard out by the end of this episode at this rate. So that was a lot. It was a squeamish one for sure for me. Satellites start laser in the whole town. I love the way it looks
Starting point is 00:43:08 fucking red beams at first. It was awesome. Then John jumps up and fucking chokes out the guard. He asks for like, he's like the fan feels like pins and needles on me. Can you fix that? Boom. Snatches a choke. Parents being annoying as fuck. Why did I write? Oh, his parents are being
Starting point is 00:43:24 annoying as fuck. When he calls him, he's like, you got to patch me through to the guardians. They're like, John. Did you get the ring yet, John? And he's like, guys, Patrick Binder through the fucking guardians. I'm doing something right now. And he goes into the gun store. He's ready to fucking get the ring. And even in this moment, like, yeah, he's going after Hall. And I don't like to see my lanterns fighting because I just like the chemistry between them. I want them to be together. But I understand what he's doing here. I didn't think of him as like the villain in this moment. It's like he's got to fucking do what he's got to do. He almost just got
Starting point is 00:43:53 killed by the guy. No, I felt like we were dealing with like two wrestlers that are good guys and yeah, we're kind of just, you know, try, both trying for the title belt in their own way. And I like them both. So I'm like, I kind of be happy whoever wins here. I just, I know the bad guys. I don't want them to win because that feels a lot worse for everyone. This just kind of took me off.
Starting point is 00:44:14 When you said the, um, the red lights coming down and just think about like how much different stuff with this was so awesome. am I crazy to say Bob? I made the case the other day for I don't remember which one about best comic book show I think this could be potentially Best Comic Book TV show of all time
Starting point is 00:44:33 It's not It doesn't have penguin for me I love it It's not penguin for me So that is probably the cold Which is crazy that that was just a couple seasons ago And I've got a watchman too So watchman I have probably right around there
Starting point is 00:44:49 Yeah I think it's has, and like, it's like, I think it might end up being better than Loki, but like that's the only one from Marvel I can think of. Wow, you're so much. I think I'm higher on Loki than you. Okay. What about you, Jose? It's not quite Loki for me.
Starting point is 00:45:06 Is it, you like a better than Wanda Vision? Yeah, I think I will see the, I know Wanda Vision ended. I know. I know. The finale is a bad taste in your mouth. Because this could still. Vondavision Peak might still have the peak of this. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:22 Yeah. Because I'm thinking of like the peak moments, Wanda Vision was bananas. Yes. And that when she says no and fucking rewinds and shit like that, even when Quicksilver shows up for the first time, and it's the first time you have a Fox X-Men character in MCU. That was like,
Starting point is 00:45:39 what the fucks have? But then it was a Boner joke. See, that's the thing. I know. I know they made it Ralph Boner. I also love all the different errors. And as someone that grew up, watching shows for a few of those eras.
Starting point is 00:45:50 Like, it really did hit. So, yeah, I probably have to do a rewatch. I think I said this when I brought up the question last time. I should probably do a Wanda Vision. At least just kind of browse around. But, I mean, this show, it's really good. It's really good. And this is probably the best episode.
Starting point is 00:46:07 Oh, five. But she said, like, insane, right? We say this every week. Oh, I said last night. I think people are saying this the best episode yet. And we have three more to go. I didn't like. I don't mean to put it down.
Starting point is 00:46:18 is up there already you didn't like the the john story backstory episode yeah that was i thought that was the weakest but it had certain things in it that i did like i i like the artist history that they gave him i like the howl screwing up his mission and kind of screwing up his military prestige his rankings like i like that stuff some of it was less good than the other episodes but still it added to his backstory in a way where i was like all right that was cool yeah it was so like it was a necessary episode. Like, now everything is, means more. It just,
Starting point is 00:46:52 the Hal seen at the end, when Hal tells his parents before him, and it tells him, like, you're never taking this fucking ring junior. Like, that was awesome. Yeah. And I felt like it's, it like lulled and they went, after that. Like, it has, you know what I'm saying? Like, then the next episode was just unreal again.
Starting point is 00:47:08 But Kyle Rainer is the artist in the comic book. That's like a big thing. Yeah. He's the comic book artist, right? He's a comic book artist. And that's why he is so. such a unique green lantern because he makes like weird things
Starting point is 00:47:22 that you would have known that a normal lantern wouldn't normally make like when he was fighting major force and instead of punching him he just creates an electric chair and straps major force it's like it's like weird stuff like that that I love hot cow and it's just goofy 90s mask which is amazing I miss the masks
Starting point is 00:47:40 a lot I wish they had the green lantern mask it's like the bizoro mask I love those little domino I love or the, what is it, Cato from Green Hornet, that type of mask. Those, I missed those and it's like John Stewart choosing not to wear the ring was such a major character development point in the comic books. But I get it. It would probably look really silly. They do in one of the, like, one of the how flashbacks they showed, he has the mask on and like on the news or something. But it's very blurry and it's kind of like in the background.
Starting point is 00:48:14 You could tell they were trying to give you that fan service without being like, we're not going to make. Kyle Chandler wear the mask every week. We don't want to get memed. We're D.C. This happens to us in Florida. Before we go into the finale of the episode, the finale of episode five, which felt like a finale, tell everyone about Square.
Starting point is 00:48:31 Support for today's episode comes from Square, the business platform that helps sellers become neighborhood favorites, whether you're gearing up for a busy season or just trying to keep up with everyday demand. Square keeps your business running smoothly from payments to NPS to online orders, inventory staff and more all in one place so you can focus on your customers and not your to-do list. I use Square all the time. I talk about it. There's a farmer's market in my town. Every Monday we go to the farmers market. The small businesses all use Square makes it easy,
Starting point is 00:49:02 brings everything together in one system. So business owners don't have to juggle a bunch of tools. Their hardware and software are designed to be easy to use. The day-to-day operations feel simpler. Squares AI powered tools help automate routine tasks. giving sellers more time back. Hell, hell, if you go to a flea market or anything like that, and there's a comic seller there, they're probably using Square. Support small businesses, of course, support small business comic stores. And support Square.
Starting point is 00:49:30 Right now, listeners can get up to $200 off Square hardware when you sign up at square.com slash go slash MMB. That is, S-Q-U-A-R-E dot com slash go-m-B. get started with Square and build a setup that works the way you do. Shout out square. And then Hal goes after Zoe on 5% battery. Really cool scene here where they blow the tower. And you're like to blow in the water tower.
Starting point is 00:50:00 Water tower is full of that smoke. That's like anti-lantern smoke. He has to go in there, throws Anton self-destructed ass into a tornado. That was a cool concept. Graham, Hal. I like that. Then he puts the glasses on where you kind of get his vision. of the green that he could see.
Starting point is 00:50:18 Zoe's handcuffed to the helicopter. He goes to the helicopter. She tore her hand off, bit her hand off. There's just a fucking hand attached to the helicopter. He goes back to the motel for a charge. John ambushes him and they get to do a great fight scene here. Like a really cool choreographed action scene. John kicking him through the closet was devastating.
Starting point is 00:50:37 It was like a crazy kick. The satellite then attacks them. Hal makes a bubble around him at the last second. John runs out of there alone, and then Zoe walks up on him. And she's all cocky and hell, even though he just got to do a fist fight with John Stewart, knows better. And he's like, yeah, I don't think John would do that. Why would John leave you here or whatever? He's like, I think bait.
Starting point is 00:51:00 And it was bait. She turns around, boom, John shoots her in the face, back into the left, picks up the watch and the rubble. He gives it to a little girl. And then he kind of just get this like long span. seen dead bodies everywhere the militias running up on great scenes of him with the ring he grabs the ring he puts it on he sees a bird when he does it um and hal gives him like they replace me they'll replace you too but the scenes of him with the ring and the lantern walking through town cinema absolute fucking cinema the way it was presented score all of it so good
Starting point is 00:51:38 spectacular absolutely spectacular and i think it they nails the like from that point on That was as close to Hal Jordan in the comic, John Stewart in the comic books as you can get. I thought they were going to fade out there too. I didn't even think we were going to get that scene in the audience that adds more to his character. I thought that would have been a cool fade out, him walking into town. Kerry being like the wars fucking over, drop your guns. Like that was, it was as good as an episode of that thing. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:05 That, they, like, I thought it was getting into a few times. Like, oh, he shoots, shoots the manhunter. And then like, that's it. and then but like they just kept giving you more and they kept giving you more and then the scene in the diner oh yeah he cut out the heart that's important too yeah cut out the heart cut out the backpack the crystal heart the way it crystallized that was very cool some people were also given the scene shit because they were like oh what she you know relied on survival for everything willing to do anything she turns around and get shot in the face why did she escape that i don't know that was kind
Starting point is 00:52:38 of a checkmate moment in my mind where like she turns around i think she's so almost like she didn't expect that. There's the last thing she expected was the guy that she made fall in love with her with the shooter in the face. And the only thing, like when Macon was talking to Anton, Anton's like, you would never give up so easily type situation. Like, you would never accept defeat so easily, which either means that's not the real manhunter that we saw get killed or a clone type
Starting point is 00:53:07 thing, or she didn't give up easily. And there's still more to come. Or she thinks by giving up her Manhunter kid can then survive and people pay less attention to him because they're like, we got the Manhunter, when there's two. Sith, Rule of two. Manhunter's, Jedi. The Sunnter's Jedi. Vader, it's amazing. Everything is amazing.
Starting point is 00:53:32 I might know it was John Stewart rules when he fucking snipes him. And I'm just like, this guy is just so, so fucking. I'm going to make a very extremely niche. like not even metaphor but comparison here this show it's like the we just like the fucking water tower with the fucking that whole scene is banana land and we got in like the fifth episode of the season and just the way that everything is has shaken out the fight the the town just blowing up which
Starting point is 00:54:02 I think like another couple of shots in town because at that point you're like oh the Manhunter needs to go this is a real fucking problem no no uh you know disrespect to her but holy shit. And so my thing is, so when I went to a little place called fire and ice, Jose, you know about fire and ice? The restaurant? The restaurant in Boston. The restaurant in Boston. It is an extremely niche thing. Bob, let me tell you a little thing about this place called fire and ice. They had what they had a strip club. They had what in Providence do at the province place. Well, that's, this is unreal. I go into this place, Bob, in Boston. I go fun place to take kids in
Starting point is 00:54:41 Boston over the summer. when it's a hard boy in the rocket right and i'm like all right cold fire and ice basically this place is like a habachi place like if you go to say a botch except it's that with a buffet so it's basically all you can eat and there's there's a protein section where it has chicken steak pork anything you can think of pretty much burgers dogs anything you can think of all different kinds of like seasonings too then there's the the the the carb section pastas rices yada yada yada, yada. There's all these different veggies there. Then they have all the sauces. So you have your soy sauces. You have like alabaca sauce. You have anything you want to do to, you know, Pesto. And you can
Starting point is 00:55:19 just, you go, you make a full bowl with as much different stuff as you want, protein and et cetera. They throw it on the grill. They cook it in front of you. They throw whatever sauce you want. You go, you eat it. Then you go up for a second. That's what this show is like, Bob. It's like fire nice. I couldn't believe. I'm like, we are eating good today. AJ ate like four bowls of just protein just steak and chicken he is not my son I don't know where he came from and the rest of the rest of us are like
Starting point is 00:55:45 I can't believe this is real life that's what this show is like I can't believe we had a fucking tornado come out that looked that great on TV and like the whole drama where you see the Manhunter's escape everything played out just tremendously we had Chekhov's
Starting point is 00:56:00 Crystal Heart which already came to fruition we have three episodes left I am just eating fucking good in this season right now and Jose can't believe I just mentioned Fire Ice, by two different Bostonians, my boy Carabas and my boy Mario, that that is the place you go for birthdays.
Starting point is 00:56:16 All the rich kids you go there on their birthdays. I'm not joking when I say you comparing lanterns to Fire and Ice might be my favorite segment in the history of podcast. I don't think I have not thought about Fire nice in probably 20 years.
Starting point is 00:56:40 That's so funny. That is so funny. Of everything, of any, you could be like, what do you think Clem's about to say or no? That would never. Jose was Zoe, and my take was the little bullseye. He's like, he did not see that coming at all.
Starting point is 00:56:57 The vent diagram of people that reference was for is just Jose. Bro, you, like, there's like less than 1% of people that would understand that reference and you found one of them. It plays. That's why I brought it up because I'm like, this guy's a New Englander. He probably dealt in some fire and ice back in the day.
Starting point is 00:57:20 Fucking fire nice, man. That was the spot. I mean, this is different, but similar. And I couldn't believe how much I got. I did Fogo de Chow for the first time ever last week. Oh, yeah. My God. What an establishment.
Starting point is 00:57:30 Welcome to the real world. Yeah. This is your Neo and that Pogo de Chow was. Morpheus. Welcome to the real world. Yeah. Oh, I am a faux good de chowat guy now. It was mind-blownly good. I get CERLIN steak, garlic steak, steak
Starting point is 00:57:47 wrapped in bacon, chicken wrapped in bacon, lamb chops, pork chops. It was everything. It was biblical. It wasn't experience. Biblical, the good way of phrase. And then the episode ends with the conversation between John and Leanna or Leanna. I don't know how I said. I think of Leanna at the bar.
Starting point is 00:58:04 She looks a little upset to know that Hall is still alive. She kind of looks down. She's like, he's still alive? He's like, yes, he is. Shit, maybe we're going to have to take him out then. And he says he feels empty with the ring and he doesn't fucking want it. And the way he takes it off, throws it away.
Starting point is 00:58:19 I love that. And more than anything, like Jose alluded to earlier, I love what that means for Guy Gardner getting the ring. The fact that it took a guy being like, I don't fucking want this for him to get it. I think that's perfect. And it's perfect for, I don't know a ton about Guy Gardner in the comics. the character in Superman
Starting point is 00:58:38 and just the little bit of Guy Gardner that we've seen so far my God, that's like, it's perfect and it explains how he got the ring because the whole show I've been wondering like if John was ready, like how the fuck did guy get the ring? Well, that makes sense he didn't want it.
Starting point is 00:58:52 And they nailed, was it Nathan Philean was there? Is that his name? Yeah. He nailed it. That is Guy Garland. I'm really excited to see him in this. I assume he's going to be in next week, I think. He has to. And some of my favorite panels of Green Lantern involved and Justice Society involved Guy Gardner.
Starting point is 00:59:13 There is a, I might have mentioned this one Superman came out. There is a very famous issue of Justice Society where Guy Gardner is arguing with Batman. And Batman's like not giving it back. He's just like, shut up, dude. Like, why are you being an asshole? And then Guy Gardner like runs at him. and Batman one shots Guy Garter. Like just knocks him cold to the point where his,
Starting point is 00:59:42 and like every like Adam and everyone's like, what fucking shot? Holy shit. And then like Guy Gardner is essentially written out of the comic book for like two episodes issues because he's on connoisse. And they like, they keep flashing back and he's just out on like the headquarters floor. and he wakes up and he's nice.
Starting point is 01:00:06 Like the punch rewired. It's humbled him. It's like when the white's concussed and he acts really nice. Exactly. Yeah. 100%. And it comes full circle where eventually in the Jeff Johns run. Actually, it might have been the Grant Morrison Green Lantern.
Starting point is 01:00:21 I can't remember. Batman is suspicious of the good Hal because he's like, I know what you did. Like he killed all the lanterns. He's like, because you know Batman's the one that's always like hesitant. And then they fight and Hal Jordan is. was like a fwack and like one shot batman and full circle moment full circle moment some of the best show and power scaling some of the best lantern panels are because again this is why lantern's so good like they always call back to like when when you have to fight without a ring like there's an
Starting point is 01:00:52 awesome couple of panels where senestro is fighting how Kyle Rainer and Kyle Rainer doesn't either doesn't have his ring or it's deep powered and Kyle and like sinestro's like I've been trained in this and this he's like naming all these martial arts he's trained in and he's like who's trained you and then kionr just walks up and just uppercuts him and he's like fucking batman that's awesome it's like the panel is like a batman punch like it's just like full it's like a superhero uppercut he's like batman training i was like god green lantern writing just slaps when it's on point that's awesome i saw a comment someone left where they're like true karma is the guardians wanting john stewart as their lantern and then they get guy gardner
Starting point is 01:01:40 instead and the way this is gonna play out Jose this i didn't even dabble i didn't even dabble in the cocktail section of fire and ice but i imagine there's the good cocktails and desserts there that's kind of what these guy gardener episodes are going to be like or it's going to be fun a little quirky not as serious as the other stuff but i cannot wake i mean that was the one thing you could say Superman. It's like, that guy is goofy as fuck, but he's entertaining as hell. So I'm very good. And by the end, when he shows up and he's flipping tanks with middle fingers and
Starting point is 01:02:11 shit, he's still goofy, but you're kind of like, all right, he's a fucking superhero. Like, at least he's like, he's competent. He's an asshole, but he's competent. Yeah, if you read the death of Superman run, like I told you when he had a yellow ring, like guy tries to fight Doomsday. And, like, so he is heroic. Like he walks up on Doomsday's like, let's do it. And Doomsday obviously crushes him.
Starting point is 01:02:37 And fearless, but more out of like arrogance than confidence, it seems. A hundred percent. He's like, let's like, I'll fight you right now. And then he, the only issue I have with Guy, the only issue, that's my only issue with the portrayal of Guy Gardner. I don't remember the terminology for it, but like people beating him, it's him getting beat up are used to show how powerful other people are. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:58 Does that make sense? But he's still, he's still. He's still such a good character. And then there's the, speaking of, there's the four horsemen. It's like Kyle, Guy, John, and it's Kyle, Guy, John, and Howe, the four. And they even do four. Oh, shit, really? The four.
Starting point is 01:03:16 And then one of them dies and they all stand in front of the grave and they all hold the four up. I'm like, this. Oh, damn. This is so funny and it's amazing. Oh, it's the best thing. Green Lantern is amazing when he's on point. well this has been a great episode Jose thank you for joining us dude this was fun I gotta just raise this last question here because I didn't notice it
Starting point is 01:03:39 I've been seeing a lot of people saying a the hotel sign it goes from like a half yeah to a yellow light oh and then the the no vacancy the oh is lit like a ring it's yellowish and then people are saying even like the title card they're like I could swear it's getting yellower, which I saw that, Glenn, and I watched for it this week. I think they chose selective moments of the title art. I think the title is pretty fucking green, but the motel thing I didn't think of, and I don't think at this point in the universe, Sinestra has ever had the yellow ring. It seems like he's just in prison for killing a guardian after maybe having a green ring or whatever, but I think they're building to that by the end of the season. They have to, right? He should be the
Starting point is 01:04:24 fucking Green Lantern villain. Well, yes, so in the in the comic books, Senestra was House Mentor, but he was expelled because he discovered like a dictatorship. I don't remember the planet. And then that's how he obtains the yellow ring. And then he founded the Sinestro Corps. So yeah, that has to be it. It's going there. I like the guy that got to play Sinestra too.
Starting point is 01:04:48 I want more of him. I like that one conversation we got between him and Hal. It was really good. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was really nervous how goofy the pink skin would come off. they nailed that.
Starting point is 01:05:00 It's pretty muted. It's pretty like subtle, much more subtle than like the Mark Strong one in the Green Lantern movie, which I even, I didn't think it looked horrible, but it looks a lot more cartoonish and contrasty. The only positive thing I say about that movie
Starting point is 01:05:13 is they at least nailed the aesthetics. Yeah. Nothing else about it was. I don't love the CGI mask. Yeah, that was the one thing. I would have rather the mask not, and even the suit, maybe not been like moving the whole time. But like, other than that,
Starting point is 01:05:28 I kind of like the look of it, yeah. I wish we had a middle ground. I don't like the lantern suits hanging in a closet. I get that that's great for the show, but like it's supposed to be like and it turns on. Yeah. It's like the one time where people complain about nanotech, it's like the one time where people would accept that. Yeah, it's not even really nanotech. It's like his suit is always on.
Starting point is 01:05:51 But just in terms of, yeah, it's like boom. It's on. You also have. People want like in the new Spider-Man movie, people freaked out of over him, like putting the mask back on. They're like, yes, it's fabric again. And then like, when you become a lantern, you have like a permanent, like, semi-force field around your body at all times.
Starting point is 01:06:11 Like, so you don't, like, it's kind of like Magneto has like that magnet force field around them. It's the same thing. Green Lantern lore, man. I love everything about it. Shout out to Jeff Jones. He's like we're only, like, at the tip of the iceberg for it, too. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:24 And I am fully prepared. Whoever DMs me, because every time I'm on your show, I get flooded with DMs. I'm going to tell you now, pick up. Here are the ones you got to read. Jeff Johns' Green Lantern. 10 out of 10, 11 out of 10. If Meltzer was here, that'd be a seven-star movie.
Starting point is 01:06:44 Jeff John's Lantern, Grant Morrison's Lantern, read Emerald Twilight, and then read Green Lantern, Green Arrow from way back in the late 60s. That's John Stewart's introduction. That is about as heavy of a comic book as you can read in terms of like topics. Because it's like this is where Speedy, who is Green Arrow Sidekick, becomes like a heroin addict. Oh, je. Yeah. The cover of him with the fucking needles.
Starting point is 01:07:15 Yeah. It's because they were, they were tackling like real life. And that's why Hal Jordan comes back and you see the famous thing where he's like, a black man comes. I've talked to you guys about this, where black man's like, why are you protecting the purple in red skin? but not black skins here on earth. So it's like it's very heavy, but you should read that. And you'll get a huge appreciation for what the show is doing right now. So those are the four that I would read.
Starting point is 01:07:40 I love that. The four. You looped it back around with the four. That's right. All right. We will talk to you guys next week on my own basement. Thanks for listening.
