Hello and welcome to My Mom's Basement
and a very special Lantern's Penultimate Edition of My Mom's Basement
with the My Mom's Basement Lantern's correspondent,
Teabob, back in the basement on high demand, highly requested.
Everyone said, we need more Teabob.
We're giving you more Teabobbob.
What's going on, T-Bob?
Hell yeah, boys, what's going on?
I changed after Wob.
I got my pod race episode one shirt on.
That's respect to nerd up.
Very, very, God, I don't want this show to be over.
That's the only thing that bums me out is how much I don't want this show to be over.
Sunday was so good.
The show was so good overall.
So thanks for having me back, boys.
Can't wait to get into it.
Of course, Clem, how we doing?
We're doing good.
Bob as someone that has reviewed more than a few comic book shows on this that we were hoping would be over and felt like they were a thousand episodes.
I feel like we are at about a dozen right now in terms of episodes and I could take a dozen more.
And we are not even close to that number.
And like you said, I feel like we ended the show last week and now we are two weeks ago.
And now we're getting all this as this secondary show.
And it just doesn't stop.
It's a nice, dense meal.
eating right now. And it's, we're getting into desserts, boys. I don't know what's coming up next,
but man, hell, yes. I'm excited to dive in. Something that does excite me before we even get into
the episode is the fact that someone tweeted or threaded James Gunn and they said like, he called it
the season finale. And they were like, season finale. And he wrote back confirmed season finale. So
it seems to imply we're doing a season two of this. And after seeing the numbers, the first few weeks when
they put it out like the biggest three episodes stretch in, you know, HBO, modern HBO history
or whatever. It's not surprising. I just really hope that they do the right thing next week and
leave us on a moment where Kyle Chandler can remain in the show, whether it's the halogram,
whether it's actual hell, whether it's parallax, which there's a lot of parallax theories going
out. I feel like T. Bob was pretty early to that. I just need Kyle Chandler in the show because once again,
the chemistry between him and Aaron Pierre in this episode,
them on the boat,
it went from funny to heartfelt to like so emotional,
unbelievable acting in this episode.
It's so funny that you mentioned that, Bob,
because like last night I'm watching and I just,
I love Kyle Chandler.
I've never seen him.
I never watched Friday Night Lights.
And I know he's probably popped up in stuff like here or there.
that I've seen and he's been good.
But I don't think I've ever seen him in such a prominent role.
And for somebody who grew up a bit jaded against Hal Jordan,
like part of my problem with him in the comic books was I always felt he was a little
one note.
He lacked a little bit of depth.
I've talked about the constructs before where he was more of like a,
no a train or a baseball bat or a giant glove or something then Kyle Rainer have all these like
crazy comic book stuff but um but that was kind of his whole personality he's just a fearless
pilot and he's a badass and and that's kind of that he's a bit of a rebel look at a ham solo
Kyle Chandler has added so much depth and pathos to this character really this entire episode did
but he's just got an irresistible uh charisma and charm when he's
on screen with that little shit-eating half-smile that he always pulls as he's manipulating the
situation. So yeah, I'm right there with you. You've actually got to find a way, ideally,
to keep Hal involved. And then from there, is this show going to be the Green Lantern show
or Lanterns, there's all different colors. And this is, I'm going to have to yield to my
correspondent here. Yellow Lantern, Red Lanterns. Are these guys cool?
Are the character's cool?
Or is it like,
Three Lantern's obviously the man,
and then everyone else falls behind them,
or are they pretty fucking awesome in their own right?
Because listen,
I know Lindelof and company can make anyone look cool
because they've just crushed this first season.
But in the books and whatnot,
like when I see yellow,
and it's kind of like, listen,
just give me the green Cooper Trooper.
Maybe the red shell too,
because obviously Maripa.
I don't need to have all these.
I don't need too many colors of the rainbow here.
What do we say,
are we excited about potential different color lanterns?
being part of this series, if that's the case.
So I would say this,
for my own personal journey with Green Lantern,
the Blackest Night Color Spectrum Wars
where you got black lanterns and blue lanterns
and guys like atrocitous red lanterns,
I've read some of that.
That was not my prime.
I know when it was going down,
I believe it's written by Jeff Johns.
I know when it was going down
that the Lantern nerds and the comic quote nerds
did seem to be very into it.
Now, that does not apply to yellow lanterns,
okay?
Because Sinestro has always,
always been around, right?
It's always been the story,
he's house teacher,
he ends up getting a yellow ring.
And last night, and I did the same thing,
because I'm loving this show,
kind of knocking the rust off my brain.
And in the original books,
when I was reading,
I think he got it from this group called the Quarrians,
who I believe were in a,
we're in an almost like inverse universe of our own,
like an antimatter universe, maybe.
It could be conflating things.
But Sinestro has always had the yellow ring.
The green ring used to have a weakness to yellow,
which always made their battles kind of specifically interesting.
I don't know if we've seen anything in this show that would say whether or not that that weakness exists.
But I guess I think it would be very hard.
to make the full spectrum work in a television show,
but James Gunn has shown a real knack for taking absurd comic book stuff
and making it work in live action.
And as you said, if Linda lost there,
he's, I'm certainly going to extend my trust to him,
but I'm mainly just excited to have Sinester in the picture.
I think he's, I think he's a very dynamic villain,
a very powerful villain.
And I think he looks like he's,
forging a yellow ring there or something going on with that flame shooting out of the island that he's on.
Like, I don't know how they're going to working in.
I've also gotten a real kick out of watching the lanterns logo slowly turn yellow with each subsequent episode.
People are saying that.
They're saying the fact that it's called lanterns and it's not called green lanterns,
maybe is hinting at something happening towards the end.
They're saying the actual Hal Jordan ring that was dug up and taken off his finger last week has gold trim on it.
And they're like, is that a hint that there should never be gold?
There should never be yellow at all on that lantern ring because it's a weakness.
Some people straight up think that John Stewart is going to become a yellow lantern at the end of next week's finale.
And that will be like a kind of a big like, oh my God, he's harnessing, you know, the power of fear.
And that is the yellow ring and everything.
I believe the first piece of concept art that James Gunn showed for lanterns had him in like a yellow lantern soup.
So I think there's a chance we're going towards that next week.
And that would be an interesting cliffhanger for the show.
I don't know how they would play that off with him being in Man of Tomorrow next.
You know what I mean?
I don't think he's going to show up in Man of Tomorrow as a Yellow Lantern.
I mean, it could, like there's, again, there's a million different directions they could go here because I think there's, I, so, okay, there's a couple of things I want to talk about here.
but first, there is precedent for having a yellow ring, but not being evil.
For a while in Guy Gardner's story, after he was Green Lantern, I can't remember exactly how,
but he had Sinestro's ring.
And for a while there, he was just a superhero rocking a yellow ring, just going around and doing
Guy Gardner's shit.
Then he ended up becoming warrior.
He got this entirely different power set.
So I, I, even though it feels like.
like this is the implication.
I don't necessarily believe
that yellow ring just equals evil.
And to kind of support that,
probably my favorite part
of this show, because it's something
that I never recognized as a kid growing up
has to do with
the concept of fearlessness.
In the comic books,
it is always presented
as a pure positive.
Okay, you're fearless. Great. That's badass.
That's why you're a green lantern.
Right. You, you rarely,
at least in the stories I read ever bore down into,
but what does it actually mean to be fearless?
And I think that's exactly what Lindelof has done this entire series.
And what it means is pretty fucked up, right?
Like look at how John grew up and all the sacrifice they took to kind of instilled on him
creative.
And in this episode, you get the halogram who now realizing I'm dead and I can actually
finally let down my guard for a little bit, let down my exterior.
He literally says, you know, I'm not.
he basically paraphrate, like, I'm not fearless because I'm badass and fearless because I'm
broken.
Yeah.
Have no love in my life.
Like, you saw his reaction when he saw, when he heard that he was in love and he wanted to
go see her because like, my God, like I was vulnerable with you.
Like I told you things.
Like I allowed you in.
So is being fearless a good thing?
Or is the Lantern Corps another iteration of the Guardian's original experiment, which were
manhunters?
Yep.
which again, born of good intentions, but did not work out.
And maybe Sinestro or somebody sells you on this idea that, you know, maybe fear is not the worst thing or that you can't do good things through fear.
I don't know, but I did love seeing that rain get to him.
And for the first time, we see Aaron Pierre have to have to deal with something that we all feel on a daily basis.
And just here in T. Bobsey, Jeff Johns, when I know,
Jose was putting him on like the highest of pedestals.
Again,
our two Lord Lantern correspondents here are simpatico,
even though they've ever met.
And if we ever could get you,
that might have to be a preview for season two,
is we bring the boys in together.
We get Jose.
Yeah,
that would be for my most basement listeners,
that's the Justice League getting together
because we brought our friend Jose on the podcast after you.
And the first thing he said when we're like,
what's your, you know,
background with the lanterns, remind the people.
He's like, well, I'm more of a Kyle Rayner guy right away.
Like you guys are so large. Oh, no way. Oh, yeah. Big time. So I think we got to make that happen one day for the listeners for sure.
And he wax poetic about Jeff John. So knowing how much he loves the Johns run and hearing your take on what it entails, I'm like, okay, I feel like there's good material there.
How they bring it to the TV screen. We'll see if, you know, if that's even the way they go. That's the thing. This show has a million other things going on other than what color lantern we might have next season.
Another thing that I love about,
and we can get into all the guys,
which is great,
but another thing that I love,
because again,
everything around this show revolves on this concept of fearlessness
is as a writer,
I believe it has to be so fun to write these characters
because you can make them so badass
and make them make decisions that in any other context you would question,
but we accept it just as like,
yeah,
yeah,
that's it.
Like when John just willingly,
steps through the portal
to another planet. You know, like, just how
John's just so calm with everything, right?
Like, his life's falling apart around him.
He's sacrificed all of his business
ambitions. He's ruined his relationships
with his brothers. These are all things
that in any other show you would spend
so much time on.
But because they're
fearless, you're allowed to create John
as such a confident character
that he can be like, I'm right, no matter
what, and I'm just going to do what the
fuck I want to do. And I'll
figure it out. Like I'm not scared about losing the business. I'm not scared about having to pay
300k to this person who's blackmailing me. I'm going to figure it out. And I actually found
that to be a very fun aspect of this show. Episode three, I feel like laid the groundwork for that
because again, in a way, like he's broken in a sense that he's like almost robotic. And maybe that
goes back to like the Manhunters where like literally half robots and he's like the next version of it.
you have to break a child to make them fearless.
And he was broken as a child.
So now everything else is excused.
And you kind of get the Hal Jordan side of that this week,
where you start with a 1975 title card.
And it's like, oh, shit, we're going back to Hal's childhood.
And I love the baseball analogy.
When he's sitting there and he's in trouble because he wouldn't give up the ball
and his dad comes down in the exact jacket and you're like, oh, shit.
Okay, this is Martin Jordan.
And he gets into a fight with the coach where,
he agrees with his son.
He's like, wait a minute, hold on.
Complete game, two outs.
Like, how good was this other kid's stuff?
Like, what's going on here?
I mean, they get into the fight and everything.
That was perfect.
That was such a good intro for that.
Like, that's the Jordans.
I love the sports accuracy there too.
Because what they say, they were up to nobody on one out.
Like, come on, dude.
Like, you should leave that guy ahead.
Yeah.
That's a legitimate.
Actually, it's funny note that means nothing.
the show has done a fantastic job with their sports set up so far, right?
You had the questioning of the alien in the first one where they're talking about Nebraska football.
You had the baseball scenario.
You had the quarterback bringing up the O line on signing day,
but that's when they made their first mistake.
Oh, yeah.
They were like number 40.
It was like number 29.
They're skinny and small.
It's like, oh, no, no, y'all have been perfect.
With your sports knowledge, we just tripped here at the finish line of the signing day scene, dude.
That was so funny.
I said tweets about that.
They were like, there's no way.
It's almost to remember the Titans like Ryan Gosling is a liability.
Like they were tweeting that for the O line of like, no, absolutely not.
They're not the ones that are, you know, having this quarterback get to go wherever you
wants in signing day.
No, you can't be number.
You literally can't play a line to be like number 40 and 80, like and everything.
But, but even conceptually, I do love.
the kid having the O-line, even up there for signing.
But, but yeah, so you get Howell's dad.
And I love what they did with that story.
Because again, it's diving deeper.
Traditionally, Hal's dad just dies because I think he was a test pilot too, right?
Yeah.
I believe in the combo.
Yeah.
And he just dies because he's flying prototype planes.
So this idea that he has this sort of tortured demon inside of him, this
tortured existence where his father ends up,
killing himself kind of indirectly.
How's dad kind of does the same thing.
And then maybe even now, Hal has done the same thing.
We're not entirely sure.
Because I'll ask you all this.
Do you all think that the show is trying to tell us that how knew he was going to die
by telling John, don't tell anybody you were here?
Because like if people know, you're going to be the last one to see me alive.
Maybe.
Maybe.
And also the baseball analogy, people are, you know,
taken in a couple different directions of like his dad telling him,
you got to give up the baseball.
Some people are saying that's like his dad telling him like,
you got to give up.
I don't think his dad is telling his son in his last moment.
Like, yeah, you give up like everyone else.
I don't think he's leaving the safe and the lockbox and everything for him.
If that's the case,
I like it as a don't give up and him picking up that baseball at the end of him being like,
I'm going to break this curse.
I like that analogy.
I also like the ring analogy of just straight up.
He's not giving up the ring.
and like he's not willing to do that.
I thought those conversations were so good.
Almost reminded me a little bit of like some of the Tony Soprano Melfi scenes where he's talking about feeling bad about what he's passed down to AJ.
And like that this is like this sick thing.
And he's he's like, I'm fucking sick.
And I've given it to him now.
Like that was like really heavy and a heavy way to start obviously like the penultimate episode when I think some people probably go into it expecting more action or something.
something like that.
But I thought it was one of the strongest scenes in the show,
especially coming back around at the end after the funeral
and having that shot of him picking up the baseball,
whatever you even take that to be interpretation-wise.
I felt like that was a really strong episode ending and like bookend.
See, so now they were talking it out,
I'm kind of thinking that it's maybe like,
does the baseball represent that family curse?
And he's telling him like, you don't, you don't, maybe, maybe like it's okay.
You don't, you have to let it fucking, you have to,
because he tells him like, great, you have to let it go.
He says, why? Because it's fucking tiring.
Right. And it tired out his father to killing himself and tired out him to killing himself.
So in a way, you could almost view how picking up the baseball is being like,
he can't give it up that he, that he's doomed to kind of suffer the same fate as,
as his forefathers.
So some great, I love when this is something that Tolkien talked about a lot back
in the day, but this idea of
applicability
versus allegory
where in one, it's the author
dictating meaning to the audience, and the other,
it's the audience taking what they're learning
and applying it themselves
and figuring out the meaning of themselves. So I like
when writers
create a situation like that
that can kind of, you can interpret a couple of different ways.
It's kind of comes the eye of the beholder situation.
And just like the title of
episode, the Jordan Boys legacy. And, you know, he does mention it in the story, right? And you're like,
is it depression, their legacy and killing themselves? Or, and it does feel like Hal is trying to
break that, which, I mean, we're all just like, please bring Kyle Pat Chandler back. I want a lot.
If it has to be the construct, Calsie Halligram, I'll live with it. I'd love to have the real
version alive, whatever it may be. Go get that baseball. Go bring us back our little, our little
Hal. Listen, good casting on the kid, too. I bought him as a young Kyle Chandler. Yeah. And I was
like, man, I hope he keeps that baseball.
It's all I was thinking during that scene.
And when he threw it, I was so let down.
And then when he came back to the end,
it just kind of jolted me back up.
And the line that Hal's dad says to the teacher or the coach,
when he says, stuff is all that matters.
And I do think that's what matters to these lanterns
and kind of their, umph, the genesis,
the stuff inside them.
And I think that's why Hal got the ring when he was younger.
Yeah.
I do a little bit more of the popsicle dude when he's like,
put the popsicle on your nose it'll swell up less he's like oh he's a sweet moment he's like
i don't know just makes sense like the way he said it was so like that's like the how that we've
seen through seven episodes it's so funny though because all of this does call into question
or make me excited to learn more of guy gardener's story because everybody else is working so hard
for these rings and and and guys just like such a cocky prick and just so full of
self-belief,
that they're just like, yeah,
I mean, he has the,
he has the stuff.
And I love that they're always
riveting it for a gym teacher with a gym teacher.
Yeah, got out to all the gym teachers out there,
dude, okay?
And the athletic directors,
whatever he was.
Yeah. And listen,
let's be honest.
I mean,
I don't know about T. Bob, you know,
college football star and all that kind of stuff.
And Bob, you know, obviously you're on the other side,
the nerd side of the spectrum.
I know when I graduated college,
I was like, man,
the people that went to college for a gym teacher, that was the move.
And I was so jealous of all the gym teachers out there.
And for that to become like a slur in 2026 or I'm like, what are we talking about?
That was the dream job right there.
And you said it best to you up, it's so funny.
I'm looking back to who's going to be the yellow lantern.
Are there red lanterns coming?
I forgot we have a green lantern.
That's probably going to be the green lantern in season two if they have it, right?
And he's pretty fucking awesome for what he is.
It looks like it.
I love to, um,
I thought it was very fun.
And I don't know, well, I don't know if this.
So in the comics, I remember, I think I played football at Michigan and then blew out his knee.
I wonder, I wonder if that's the case here.
And if we'll get into that, but, but I love, I loved a couple of things with the Halligrant.
And sorry, my brain spinning.
There's a few things.
What this show does with time skips is very narratively satisfying.
I love time skips and shows.
I think it allows you to, to play with, with a lot of storytelling,
techniques that you can't otherwise.
And so having the halogram
have to deal with like, how was my funeral?
Was, you know, who all was there?
Even the letter that he wrote to himself, right?
And then having to have him figure out like, wait a second,
like you, I didn't train you?
Like, you're not the Greenlander?
Who the fight?
Like, who's this guy, Gardner guy?
It just creates this.
It's a rich, rich tapestry from which they're able to create a lot of
interesting dynamics.
And if you're a lantern,
heard hearing him get him with the Mogo line was fantastic because I was wondering if that popped
you if that was Mogo pointing at the screen yeah oh yeah oh yeah that was big time I was Leo de Caprio
sitting I'm like oh he's gonna fall for it I looked up Mogo he looks like a pool ball he literally
looks like a striped pool ball yeah it's a planet where the equator is like basically the
lantern symbol like the band of the ring and then yeah yeah someone someone put like they took
the planet and they put like gloves and like shoes on it to make a character with that really
cracked me up then john calls his brother says he needs the 300k and he's like i'll think about help
and basically brings the halogram to the fortress of storage which i still love and he was very hesitant
to help and i liked why he was like playing charades getting him outside wants to meet this sheriff
carry and then you get that scene where he on the way shows him how he could make the construct without the
ring and Hal's very impressed.
I think that's coming into play later on where he was asked,
uh, or he asked him about the battery life of it.
And at one point, the halogram doesn't answer.
I think the ring is probably dead at that point already.
And John is just keeping the construct alive.
I mean, that would be cool.
And you built it up with the bird with this.
There's been enough where I could buy that.
And, and keeping the hallogram alive now we know is.
is insane, right?
Because,
Hal's like,
and that's what I love here.
We're getting a more genuine how of like,
what if he actually was a teacher that was cool with like training this guy and,
and we give appreciation and whatnot.
The aliens earlier in the season also were amazed that he had the green construct without
the ring.
Yeah.
Does he have some sort of inherent,
inherent lantern powers?
I don't know.
I think it'd be cool.
I don't know.
You know, in the law,
in the overall lore of like green.
and Lantern comics and stuff.
I don't know if that's something that could be possible.
But I would like that for John Stewart.
When Hal goes crazy,
he absorbs the central,
he absorbs the main central batteries power,
becomes parallax.
He later reignites Earth's sun when it's dying and sacrifices himself.
So he ends up going out,
the hero eventually been in Kyle,
uh,
over time,
I can't remember exactly how, but he's getting into these massive battles,
and he's becoming more and more powerful,
and he becomes this being called ion.
And essentially, he had started to almost internalize the,
the lantern power.
Kyle Rainer had.
And it was,
it was imbued inside of him.
And then he ended up using that to reignite the central battery
and bring the Green Lantern Corps back eventually,
but he kind of became a regular human once again.
So I guess there is some precedent in the books for,
humans be able to
to kind of wield that power
or carry that power
outside of just a ring.
And they also showed us he's able to
make constructs way more complex
than Hal Jordan in that like he could put every
gear and screw in so they actually work.
Can he create a battery with the construct?
Can he create like a lantern
where he could go charge it?
And it's almost like a like a self-charge.
I think that'd be cool too.
That's another great storytelling technique
is the dying battery thing.
because I don't know about y'all.
I'm anxious the whole time.
I'm like,
we gotta move to.
We have to get this show.
Is there a low power mode?
He put low power mode on?
Are you guys like me when that iPhone turns yellow?
It's time to throw it.
I don't, my daughter lives at 3%
and it just completely gives me anxiety
just thinking about having her phone.
I cannot.
It's the worst.
It's the worst.
So I think it's like a very meta situation
where Lindelof is kind of playing off like a,
modern societal convention and using it to apply like pace to the story and it really works
and it would be great because i know there have been some nitpicker saying listen this that was
more than an hour guys and it's like okay the construct thing is an all time like but we've we've
hinted at this before and listen you're it's i i don't know about lost and probably some watchman stuff
it's hard to catch lindel off in his own trap for like especially season one stuff yeah oh yeah
boy is just cooking then you want to say lost season seven they lost their
way. I don't even know how long it went. But I, he has this shit with a little bow on top for us.
So I believe in this. And it kind of blew my mind. You brought that up, Bob. If you want to, yeah,
that's a really good point. But even if you wanted to be like super strict about the interpretation,
the hallogram's not up constantly, right? Like if we were, if we were looking, if we, if we were looking at
just the amount of time that we saw him on screen, it would still technically be well under an hour.
And then it might be a bit of a cop out because it does.
feel like we're assuming that it's kind of going on in the background.
But obviously, I don't think the ring would have too much latent sort of power drain,
like maybe like our real life batteries, because he gets it off the dead body and it still has
a little bit of juice in him.
I like the knocking thing too.
Yeah.
I was wondering what they were going to do with that.
I've never heard of that.
But, but yeah, I like that as a little way to kickstart and get a little extra juice out.
I like that.
I like when Hal like chipped off apart in a pretty.
prior episode, I think is episode five or six.
The big, like crazy episode where they kill Zoe, when he like chips off apart to keep the halogram in place, he calls it like sensory protocol or something.
I thought that was cool.
Which is interesting because John doesn't need century protocol, right?
Like, I mean, he, he, he doesn't need it.
Yeah.
We see that girl Maggie at the hat ceremony.
She kind of confronts John when he arrives, takes his watch from him.
Noah then goes out with the O-Line says he's not making the decision tonight.
he's focused on on the game.
Now, as sports guys, if you're at that hat ceremony and you're all fired up,
you want to see where your quarterback's going, is part of you a little annoyed at that decision
or part of you like, all right, bro, I know we got the game tonight, but your future is more
important.
Or are you like, no, you just should have not had the hat ceremony.
I like either have a pep rally or have the hat ceremony.
It's a little bit of pomp and circumstance to be like, no, actually, guys, we're focused on
tonight's game.
It's also brutal.
They said he didn't want it too.
So the town just put it on.
He's like,
I said it didn't want it.
Oh,
he did say that.
Okay,
okay,
okay.
So that makes,
that that makes,
that kind of gives them a bit more of the past.
And like,
don't have it.
Now I got to know,
Teabob is a man that grew up in the South where football is religion and religion
is football.
And obviously you,
you know,
you were very skilled and I don't know who your high,
how your high school teammates were.
Did you have a hat ceremony?
Did you have teammates at a hat ceremony?
Oh,
yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was awesome.
We had, we had the, we've said the number one running back in the country
transferred to my high school, my senior year.
So he had a big ceremony.
But yeah, dude, it was badass.
We had a, you know, it was in front of the school, hats laid out, LSU.
And there were a few other guys who were going like, he went to big Georgia.
And then there were a few other guys going to smaller school.
So we kind of did it as a group.
But then it was fun, man.
That was like 2007.
So it was kind of like, you know, rivals had become a huge thing.
time. So I remember that day, we got to go to ESPN zone, all the top recruits in Georgia did,
which was like a David Busters basically. And we got like free game cards. So I was so pumped,
dude. We just got to do unlimited games at ESPN zone all day. I was ecstatic. But it, but it was like
a very good core family memory where my mom has the LSU gear on. My dad does, you know,
them signing and and hugging and like yeah it was it was it was it was really cool signing day used
to mean some not as much anymore but it used to mean some i was going to say as a guy who's a
casual college football fan signing day would make its way to the national you know consciousness
very easy is p.n you know six o'clock a block stuff you had the whoever the biggest names were in
the country where they had you know put the hats on and the fact that it's kind of just disappear i
guess because the guy could just be like, ah, this guy, this other school paid me.
I'm going to go there next year, right?
Well, now they have the early signed day, which is like during the playoff and then,
or right before.
And then as you, it's really also, it's the portal thing where yeah, guys can, guys can go anywhere
at a drop of a hat.
But what do you all, what do you all think?
Maybe I'm reading too much out to it.
They put a lot of focus on that Nebraska hat.
They did.
And I didn't know if that was just like.
we're in Nebraska but they they held on that one for a second they they really did they held on it they put in that firm focus they stay and and so I wonder because all the time in shows like this every second of footage is so expensive that it is very rare that anything is is is unintentional and also really the sun's kind of storyline as a whole right like what what where where what are we
where are we going?
I think he's a manhunter.
Oh, he's a manhunter,
gee Bob. In case you didn't know,
Noah's a motherfucking manhunter.
And that's this special gift
that Carrie was talking about from Zoe.
It seems like, oh, they couldn't have kids
when they were talking to Anton with,
oh, we couldn't have kids. We couldn't conceive.
She couldn't conceive. So had to make,
and then she told him in that last episode
when he was a child,
like remember everything I taught you.
Never forget it. And it's like, okay.
that is yeah that that makes sense guys that like that makes complete sense and also saying john was
building arcs for like disasters and his name is noah noah's arc
we're this motherfucker had a noodle arm you're going to tell me he became the star quarterback
and the hats the hats so we focused on the Nebraska hat i also saw navy was on there
I saw Michigan was on there.
And then the other one, they said it could be Florida State or Notre Dame.
I do know this.
I remember this was a big Mike in the Mad Dog trivia.
It's like Super Bowl quarterbacks that won the Super Bowl winning quarterbacks and presidents.
And there was like three or four colleges where it had both.
Michigan was one.
Navy was one.
I don't know if Nebraska was one.
But this guy wants to be a quarterback and he wants to be the president.
And I feel like that was not a mistake right there.
manhunter. He's absolutely a manhunter.
You're a thousand, and this is going to
create, or it could create like a
super moral quandry
for, yeah,
for John or Hal or whoever.
Like, if you figure that out, are you going to
take this kid out? Which would zinc
almost gets back to the concepts we were talking about earlier
where it's like, are the guardians right?
Because the guardians will order you to kill that kid.
Is that right? Is that wrong?
And is he half manhunter? Is he half human,
half manhunter? Because I also think that would be kind of
interesting.
where that creates even more of a moral quandary
where it's like he's human though.
The manhunters in general have been interesting
in this show though because
while certainly obviously
they've done evil in the past
Zoe the manhunter that we ran into
like she didn't have a negative effect
on Rushville right?
No, only positive.
The only like negative thing she did I guess
was she killed Abin Sir.
Is that his name?
Yeah.
Evan sir, right?
Avent sir.
Yeah, that's right.
Well, that's right.
That's the only thing we learned of that she was doing that was so negative, really.
Like she made the, nobody in the town was getting sick.
She helped out multiple people that were in desperate, desperate straits.
Now, whether it was her or somebody else among Manhuners, I guess she had to pay and atone for crimes of the past.
And like, I understand why the alien group, obviously, because we just saw their world, why they would want revenge on that group.
but I don't know what they're going to do with that.
It is interesting me that that was a mostly positive character
from everything that we saw that John had to kill
on the Guardian's orders.
This is going to potentially lead to a very disturbing dark scene
where John kills Noah, rips his heart out
and it doesn't crystallize.
He's like, oh, all right, guys.
The basement boys told me this was a man.
Yeah, sorry.
We're like, oh, hand up.
That's on us.
That was on us.
Do you think there's something that's going to happen next week with Billy Macon as well?
Because he, like, confronts John in the gym and gets all pissed off again and carries in between the two of them.
We had the fight scene by Guy Gardner's lantern signal.
Yeah.
Is he just a red herring for next week?
Because I think there's a chance next week.
It could be unveiled that, like, Kerry killed John to save her son.
Like, he found out.
She was like, fuck.
Or that it was literally Noah.
I guess it could have been Billy as well.
I'd just be surprised if it was Billy.
He's a good actor.
Maybe he cast him.
I don't know.
Wait, wait, so you raise a good point.
Would she have had, is that the motivation that she would have had to kill Hal if she thought that she had to protect Noah?
Do we, what do you all think about how getting the feeling that she killed him?
What did you all make that?
That like kind of hit me out of nowhere.
Like I didn't see him saying that.
And then when he did say that, I was like, holy fuck,
because he said it so definitively.
Like, she was the one that fucking killed me.
The last time we heard him with that much sureness in his voice,
he's like, that's an alien right there.
Like, he just knew it.
You know, he sniffed it out.
And I was like, Hal, I love Carrie.
She's on the motherfucking sussle.
She's right below her son or half son on that.
I know.
I guess it's a full son.
It's a half manhunter, full son.
I don't, it's, this is a lot to deal with that.
See, that's the thing.
I don't think it's a manhunter like that was pretending to sling.
lowly age as a child. Like I believe that he was like a kid at one point and now he is in high school.
He may not even realize what he could he may not even realize what seems like a good kid inside of him.
Also I didn't notice this until you all said it, but fortress of storage is so good compared to the fortress of solitude.
And it's just like decrepit normal storage facility. Yeah.
that has a black hole portal to
to another planet on it.
I love,
it's very Hal,
in my opinion,
too,
that he keeps this black hole thing
just in a,
like a grocery bag.
Yeah.
Yeah.
In the safe.
It's just like a Walgreens bag.
Yeah.
Busted it out and then lifting it up.
That was so good.
And that's when he,
he,
show Kerry the Hallogram and they have like a very emotional moment.
Again,
great,
great acting.
Kerry's acting is phenomenal.
phenomenal.
John is the TV that Hal would yell at every Sunday, but he never missed a game because he was a huge fan.
That's how Kerry described it.
My God, that was a great line.
Like, what a great way to describe a dynamic between two people.
I loved that.
And that's when the Hallagrant's like, yeah, Carrie killed me.
They head to the safe and they find that portal.
I loved the John Stewart line.
He's like, ask me if I'm afraid.
It's like, are you afraid?
He's like, fuck no.
Step right through it.
I love that.
He's just so badass, man.
He's so big and badass.
Yeah, to go back to the scene of the Halle Graham and Kerry,
you're seeing each other again, too, again, like you said,
fantastic acting.
And I really love how they figured out a bit of an impossible problem,
which is when you have the character like Hal,
who is so cocksure, so closed off emotionally,
it's a roundabout way of doing it, but they figured out a way to have him be vulnerable.
And it's by using a past version of himself that no, he's, he is now dead so he has nothing to protect so he can finally open up and watching him see her and being like, did I tell you everything?
I like, I told you how I told you how my dad died and everything.
And then they extend that into the scene of the boat.
It's just what a way to, to open up the, the tough exterior of, of Hal Jordan.
even when she kind of busts his balls a little and she's like,
he's like,
I could see why I liked you,
you know?
Yeah,
that's the kind of person that would unlock that fucking box that is.
What she called?
X.
Tax,
yeah,
they called them text.
Yeah.
That was a great lot.
I love that.
There's like almost a similar.
It's not similar,
but in Ironheart,
there's a character that Ironheart,
the character,
Rie Reeliams lost and she kind of comes back through like a hologram type
AI type thing in that show.
And they,
play some similar beats, some different.
It's not like a mystery as to how she died and everything like that, I don't think.
But it was not handled well and seeing it handled so well in this.
I've seen it in another show as well where they kind of like bring someone back like an AI
version of them.
And it's kind of played in like, this is bad.
It's not the real person.
I really like the way the halogram has played.
Like this version of him that's willing to compliment John too in the car.
He's like, huh, it's weird.
Like hell never complimented me.
Like you said too, the fact.
the fact that he has nothing anymore and he's allowing himself to be vulnerable because of that.
I love that.
Yeah, and I felt so happy for John.
That was good acting by Pierre.
Yeah.
I was still trying to be the cool, tough guy, but obviously feeling some type of way.
I mean, think about it.
Pierre, John basically blew up his entire life just to get an apology from how.
Yeah.
Like, whatever he had issues, he has family issues, he has, he has some,
real hung up unresolved issues with Hal Jordan
and desperately wants his approval,
apology, acceptance, whatever it is.
And that was the first time where he gets it and he tries not to show it,
but he almost can't, he can't help himself.
Yeah, he's like, oh shit.
Yeah, it's really impressive.
I wonder if fucking impressive.
I wonder if the Hal apology does fill a void for him.
And then also it's on the command of his mom,
Bernadette, right?
because she's the one who tried to get this all done.
He's like, why would you come here?
And he's like, my mom told me to.
And if he, if he calls her mom by the end of this season,
it's like mission accomplished, right?
Because that will feel very earned when it's all said.
True.
Also, so this Maddie thing, I think we could all agree.
This feels very weird.
How goddamn, like, how big of a plot, the amount of money,
she takes the watch.
And I don't know how it's going to pay off.
That's being weird.
I do feel like, it's way too.
satisfied. Yeah, she's too
cocky and Johnson was too willing to pay
it. Yeah.
And it's like if I wanted to
justify it within the characters, I would say
it's just because I don't know about her, but on the
John's side, he's obviously
got like such a singular focus
on the lantern stuff, right? Like it is
his drug. He was out of the game.
He was sober,
living a clean life. And the first
time he took a little hit
of a little lantern drama.
My guy woke up like
two weeks later in an apartment with with needles everywhere.
I mean, so like he, to me, it's almost like he doesn't give a fuck about the money,
whatever, I'll get that later.
I have to figure this out.
And this could be a possible impediment.
And I went out the way.
But they are making it into such a big thing.
I wonder.
Yeah, I just wonder where they're going with this.
Yeah.
Someone said, Hal is so steadfast on no one can know I was here.
And maybe this is John's way of doing like, I'm going to do whatever it takes.
Now, the reason for that,
we still don't know, you know,
and that's why there are all these balls up in the air
as they juggle them and you're like,
how is this all going to make sense in the end?
And they have, what, 50 minutes to wrap it up?
And I, I, crazily enough,
think they can do it if they so choose.
There's a character from the Green Lantern comics
that some people think could be Maggie.
Eresia Rob?
She looks like Eresia from my memory,
but I'm pretty sure Eresia, yeah, was she human?
I might be getting my blonde lanterns confused,
but I always thought she was an alien that looked vaguely human.
Yeah, I don't know myself.
I've seen some theories about that.
I find that a little hard to believe too.
Like she's going to become a lantern after blackmail in one of them.
I don't know.
She seems fearless.
That's true.
True.
That's a point.
You know what?
That's a point.
And there's a little bit of fear slipping into John Stewart if he's willing to pay that, right?
He's a little bit afraid that that's going to get out.
or or again he just feels like he's on a
a tight schedule and he's like I can't
fucking deal with trying to be arrested or having to explain my
like we got to keep this thing we got to keep this thing moving
the only issue I would have with her being a lantern maybe
but whatever I'll allow them to sell me on anything
is that's a lot of humans at that point
for you know for for for regarding an entire sector of space
we've already got three humans which is fine
because we never had a human up until this point.
But to add yet another one to the mix,
unless the guardians just think like,
well, I mean, yeah, I guess to be fair,
how Jordan did go on to become the greatest
or one of the all-time greats, if not the goat.
So maybe like, okay, these humans just have something.
But definitely one of the stories that's going to be interesting
to see how much they touch in this final episode
and how they do it.
And by the way, I know there's some timeline fuckery,
because it was pointed out on Twitter that in the first episode when we see the interview with Hal Jordan,
I believe he says that his father died when he was eight or something like that.
And then in this episode, he's clearly older than eight and his dad is talking to him.
I think he's like 11 in this episode or something like that.
It's unfortunate.
It's not something that really breaks the show for me where I'm like,
all right, maybe they were two years off the timeline when they talked about it.
Some people are acting like that shows over.
I'm not watching the finale.
Timeline was wrong when he was a kid.
I thought so he said it was nine.
AJ's nine and he starts kid pitch next year.
So I don't.
Yeah.
Okay.
I don't know.
It's close enough where I'm like,
I didn't remember that in episode one,
he even said that specific age.
I know that maybe people should be accountable to us there on timelines.
If that is breaking you on the show,
I don't think you're enjoying the show.
Like, that's fine.
That's fine.
I don't watch the Ryan Reynolds.
You're enjoying the show.
Yeah, exactly.
So they get to this planet, this like sand planet, kind of like a cracked desert with a green sky.
There's this huge ship or structure of some sort in the sky, weird looking.
And John is going, why do I?
I know this place.
I feel like I've been here before.
And he finds this skull.
It doesn't look like a human skull.
Almost looks like a gorilla skull, like the way it's like curved in the back.
Yeah.
And this is the planet that Anton showed him when he was sort of.
It's like a torture device basically when he's letting him see the destruction, the genocide that they went through and everything.
I thought that was shot in a way where it feels like we're in the third act now.
That's like a, oh yeah.
Oh, fuck.
We've arrived and we're in the end game now to borrow a line from Marvel.
And I liked all of that.
Even when he's looking and he's seeing the light, it's like, okay, there's like a mystery unveiling itself here.
Some people even think that structure in the sky, we never saw like a full shot of it.
But they're saying what if next week they reveal from above?
It looks like the yellow lantern symbol.
I mean, so again, the yellow ring originally came from, it was either a planet or alternate universe.
I'm not sure, but I believe a place called the chordians.
Again, I'm purposely not looking stuff up.
I'm trying to pull just from memory,
so I apologize, guys,
if I'm getting it wrong.
So I thought initially that that's where you were.
Did they ever say the alien race's name?
Do we know?
I don't know.
I don't think so,
but I don't know.
I could be wrong on that.
They did not say the planet name because I know where
theorizing what they thought the planet was.
Someone's an A maybe.
I saw it somewhere.
Because either way,
I guess,
even if I'm getting the name wrong,
like there is a,
group of people or a planet, a place that, that, that, that, that made that yellow ring.
And I'm like, okay, as Hal pointed out, the, when you, when he opens that portal, he purposely
placed the other end of the portal where he did for a reason, right? Yeah. So why did he do it? Why is
Sinestro there? Is this some sort of overarching plan that they had? Like, there's, there's, there's,
there's nothing accidental about ending up on that planet.
And I believe that means that it has to be by house design of some sorts.
Right.
Yeah.
So people are starting to talk about cloning now.
Have you seen this stuff on Twitter on the time once?
Uh-uh.
There was that weird moment in episode five or six with Zoe and John after he had been
burned in the car where she like regenerates him.
And he has at the end like this circle on his arm.
And they're like sample taken.
And there was some clip where Hal had the same circle on his arm.
Everyone was like, what is what is that?
That again, like you said, there's nothing by accident.
They didn't accidentally include two shots where they have the exact same,
almost like sample taken out of their arm.
So now people are saying was the how that went to prison for 10 years,
a clone of Hal.
And Hal Jordan went and broke Sinestra out of prison and was doing whatever he was doing
with them on this planet and that's why there was a portal and everything like i think there
could be something to that especially because we saw on the making ranch that cow and i think
there were signs of that implied like they were cloning cows and doing that laser cutting thing yeah
got the laser cutting thing was crazy yeah uh i i haven't considered this but that does
make some sense i maybe again you can depend it's all
about execution, not about inherently whether an idea is good or not. I maybe don't know if I love
that as the explanation, but if that is it, we'll see if they can, uh, if they can make it work for us.
I'm, I'm just really excited to get, uh, some sinister action. I know they, they held them back.
And like, I appreciate it. You want to kind of hold them back and make him feel special by the end
of this episode. You, he has like this, not like a palpatine, like aura, but he has,
this aura of like he's the mentor that we don't know much about and he's you know been banished and
broken out of prison they did like build up a mystique and aura about him but i just want more i'm like
we're only going to get one episode of sinestro well i mean he's the goat's goat right if hal's
greatest all time that's who he learned under um he's like the guardians view him as like maybe
the single most dangerous man out there he killed a guardian and now
we believe, or I guess we shouldn't, don't say believe, but it looks like how, yeah,
could have been working with him in some way, broken him out of prison.
And so it kind of calls, it calls into question all the ideas of binary good and evil, right?
Are the guardians actually just straight up good?
Is being Greenlander just straight up good?
Is Guy Gardner just straight up a good guy?
I'm not sure
Or is there wrongs that they're doing that
Sinestro and Hal we're trying to
To fight against
How they're going to all answer this in one episode
I'm not sure
But there's also
Very excited
So on this planet they go
He takes the boat with the halogram
And there's that great scene where he sees his dad
He sees himself with the apple and everything
jumps into the water
And what hell's like
I fucking saved you.
Like he was like, you tried to kill me.
He's like, I saved you.
What are he talking about?
You put the fucking gun to your head.
Why did he do this?
Because there's this gas in the air on this planet that was making the people jump off the
structure.
It's corrupting minds.
If Hal broke Sinestro out of prison and has spent a little bit of time on this planet with
him, could this be the lead into parallax?
Could this be the lead into his mind starting to get corrupted?
This gas corrupting his mind?
I don't know.
But people are certainly speculating that on the intercourse.
Webbs.
And do we all think the same thing, too, about another DC villain who can get to your worst fears
and has you just tripping out?
Scarecrow.
Our boy Scarecrow.
And it's not a dark night reference.
It's the best thing you do, guys.
I'm throwing Batman begins at you guys right now.
We get to our weekly dark night.
Also, by the way, the planet real quick, that, and listen, the planet was not as scary as I
thought this could have been.
But if this was at least what Planet X or whatever.
ever looked like at the end of Stranger Things.
I always said, all right, that was a pretty satisfying for the final boss.
And the fact they couldn't even get to that level for the fucking, this is a stranger
things, you know, fucking, sorry for the rewind guys.
But like that's what I thought when we first time, I go, this kind of looks like stranger
things if they put a little more work into that final boss.
I'm sorry.
That was my little.
No, no.
I thought the planet aesthetically, I, I thought it worked, you know, the bear in wasteland.
I also storytelling convention.
I love that we can get.
backstory without it being contrived and get an explanation because John has the knowledge
that was imparted on him a bit haunting when he's talking about like I saw people jumping off
but I didn't know what they were jumping off of that makes sense uh by the way this for you
clem uh during I thought so so I just googled it but during the 2019 2010
blackest night uh comic event that's when they brought in all the other characters and
everything uh scarecrow did get a yellow ring.
So that's cool because it's fear.
Oh, that's shit.
Fear-based villain.
He got a fear-based.
Because that's when Batman gets a ring in that story as well, correct?
I'm guessing.
I think he might get a black.
I think he becomes the Black Lantern.
I just saw someone posted a cool comic panel of like the yellow ring coming over to like Batman.
I think it was the yellow ring.
And trying to like.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And he rejects it.
He's like, get the fuck away.
He's like, what the hell is that?
he um i i i badman's had a lot of flirtation with with lantern rings and i guess it's comic
books everybody you know and one run or another get stuff with that but yeah he said black
ring yellow ring i think he's had the green i think he's had the green lantern ring before i certainly
one of the cartoons he has but but but this idea of corruption is also interesting
because i i i can't i can't now that we're doing this podcast i just can't get away from this
idea of like is fearlessness actually good?
Is fear corrupting our Sinestro and how maybe in the right here in some ways?
It would seem a really, maybe too tough of a bridge to sell to Lantern's fans if,
to Green Lantern fans, if like you're going to try to paint Sinestro as, oh, in the end,
he's like a misunderstood good guy.
But whatever, we'll see, we'll see where it ends up going.
Because, like, how does, for all of his warts, and this is something that I really like, Hal, I think, did believe that he was giving his all to be a good person.
Because you could tell he was kind of devastated when he learned that he had spent 10 years in jail.
And you can tell from his funeral note that he thought, like, no, I'm doing right by the world, by humans, by the space, like, like, I'm going to be honored.
like for all my own personal demons
I'm a good person
and I'm doing everything I can to be a good person
and it's pretty tragic
that he ends up in jail for a decade
and then a funeral that nobody goes to.
I hope I mattered.
That's the last thing he says in that.
Yeah, that was deep too.
I could almost see like a, here a quote
where he's like the difference
between fearless and madness
is like a small bridge.
Because like if you're fearless,
you can just do some wild shit.
You can do parallax shit, right?
if you don't have any fear of anything.
I mean, it's heartbreaking in this episode when with Johnny basically says,
like I'm starting to question whether or not I was even murdered.
Like, did I fall into that Jordan curse, basically?
And then the episode ends on, yeah, a cave dweller, as they say in the close captions,
grabs Hal, puts a knife to his throat.
It's Sinestro.
And I love the needle drop of father's son by queen.
so good.
Oh, I didn't even know.
I wanted to look up the song and I forgot to.
It was queen father to son.
I was like, wow, what a fucking underrated track.
And that was a cool way to end the episode and obviously set up the huge finale.
I don't know what it's going to hold.
I don't know how much of it's going to take place on this planet.
I don't know if we're going to get a little more Guy Gardner,
a little more clarification of who the Green Lantern will be leading into Man of Tomorrow.
I don't know.
I'm excited, though.
I know Guy Gardner's supposed to be in like a.
couple more DC projects. So he's going to stick around in some capacity. Yeah, I mean,
you get Nathan filling as Guy Gardner. You got to keep, you got to keep mining that well like
him. Actually, shit, all three lanterns exceptionally cast. I can't believe how well they've done
Guy Gardner, how Jordan John Stewart. Again, I like how way more than I ever thought I would.
You mentioned that, so I didn't realize the musical needle drop, but also kind of a nice callback.
when they do the little combo punch,
you know,
Hallogram disappears and he hits Sinestro.
Doesn't he tell him nice arm?
Like nice arm training?
Oh,
I think he does.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's the first time I'm putting that together,
so I don't know if I can draw any like on the spot meaning from it.
But that too was kind of a one.
And they play father's son.
It's like poetry.
It rhymes.
Yeah.
Exactly.
I just got to lose it.
That was the episode.
So, Lucas.
Really good.
I know, dude, the museum.
Oh, my God.
I was so pissed off to see Kim Kardashian was there.
I was like, she does not appreciate this like I would.
All right.
T. Bob, thank you so much for joining us.
This was a treat.
It's just to hear you break down Green Lantern shit is, it's a pleasure.
It's an honor and a present.
It's really nice.
I'm also looking forward to at the end of the season, going back, digging up my old books,
diving into reading about the episodes
because I've really, I've wanted to approach
this entire show by
just what's already in my brain.
So I apologize to any of the mega nerds out there
that maybe I'm missing stuff, inaccuracies,
getting stuff wrong. But yes, I'm even more excited
once it's all said and done to then go look at all the online
theories, look what people are saying, look at what
are the elements I'm not even seeing. So thanks for having me, boys.
It's always fun to be in the basement.
Of course. And we'll be back next week
to talk lanterns,
and maybe a little bit of Avengers End Game Encore because I'm going to see it today.
Here's the shirt I'm bringing to Troll Clemmer.
Oh, no way.
You're going today?
Yeah.
Okay.
Oh, this is encore, though.
Not Doomsday.
I'm being an idiot.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, Dune's Day.
That would be, that'd be crazy.
No, when does Tuesday come out?
This is December 18th.
Okay.
Dune's Day.
Dune's Day.
Exactly, yeah.
All right.
We will talk to you guys next week.
