Hello, and welcome back to My Mom's Basement and a very super special lanterns finale edition of My Mom's
Basement.
Clem, the top comment last week, they said, next week, we need Jose and we need Teabob.
We need the two lanterns guys that know way more about the lanterns than these two idiots.
So we got them on the podcast.
We got Teabob.
We got Jose, superpowers, super friends, unite, Avengers assemble, lanterns correspondents, get together.
I don't know, we could change the oath here.
We're changing oaths.
We're squeezing ourselves out of our own show just based on the comments, and that's just what we're going to do.
And honestly, for this show and this, in particular, this comic, the fans deserve it, the listeners, viewers, whatever they are, they deserve it.
Because this is, if you have a free, you know, you have the friend that you, like, grew up at home with,
and then the friend from college, you're like, you two are going to love each other.
That was Jose and Teabob.
And before we even went live, we had a good five to ten minute.
Oh, yeah, you know, you're a Rainer guy and this and that.
And then we're just talking books, just hardcore book talk by these two.
It was an absolute blessing to hear for those five to ten minutes.
And you guys will get a good hour of it on the show along with, you know, our lanterns recap.
So it's a great time, first time, hopefully not the last two.
I would say maybe the, I'd say the two most beloved guests in basement history right here together.
I think it has to be very kind.
Let's go, Jose.
It is fun because my childhood with comic books definitely took place in like a vacuum, right?
Like I wasn't, you know, I was on the internet, but you're not like talking to people.
I was too intimidated by the older nerds in comic shops to like talk to the older guys.
So like I would just like I'd go.
I'd buy my stuff and I'd just be in my room reading them.
So like Jose is the second person in my life that I've ever gotten to talk to about
Rayner actually like human to human and it's fantastic.
Yeah.
And that was phenomenal too.
Because it's,
I'm used to interacting people.
I'm sure you have this where when you say something,
you have to give backstory, right?
Yeah.
But when you interact with someone who is so into like the ether of comic books,
you don't have to do that.
You're like, oh, remember when Major Force did this?
Yup.
Remember when he did this?
Yep.
You guys just said, remember the fridge.
Yeah, it was a big scene.
It's a feminist.
moment. That is a subtle moment.
If you read Calum books in the 90s,
before you even hit puberty,
you saw,
there's even the scene before it.
And then with,
I don't want to give it away,
but the scene before it went Kyle and Alex,
you know,
they do what adults do when they're in love.
And then fridge.
And I was like,
oh,
what's happening in my life right now?
God,
Alex looks so hot in the LA Raiders gear.
Kyle's on the beach,
like flexing.
But no,
but then,
I mean,
that's what kicked Kyle into New York City.
Yeah.
Because he's living in LA at the time.
She gets stuffed into a fridge, trauma.
He goes to New York.
That was one thing I was liked about Kyle, too.
They're definitely probably chasing Marvel at the time.
But, you know, D.C.'s got their fake cities and everything.
But Kyle was in New York.
And that was very, like, visceral and cool and real.
We're not here to talk about Kyle.
That's my favorite part of this whole conversation.
I would know who the fuck Kyle ran.
If we had never had you guys on the show and I was just watching eight episodes of
lanterns, I would be like, well, there's only been two
Green Lantern's in the history of the show.
And it's Al Jordan and John Stewart.
And if we just talk to these two,
you'd be like, who's the most famous superhero of all
time? Kyle Rainer, probably Batman
a close second.
Did you,
because I was selling Robbie and Clemmons the last time
I was on, I think Green Lantern is one of the
few heroes where I know people that
only read Green Lantern, right?
That was kind of me growing up.
Like, I would read a lot of JLA as well.
That's right. I would read like
arcs here and there from
from like Batman like hush and stuff because i mean jim lezart was fucking incredible true story uh uh like
you'd go back and you'd pick up like a death of superman or something but no i was just something
about green lantern like hooked me and i read like the guy gardner series warrior um i vaguely
remember some of the mosaic john stewart stuff but yeah like it was just like it was all
lanner for me that's right and we don't count alan scott uh and well i but i always liked all
Scott, the JSA, he's Jade's dad.
God, Jade was hot back
in the day. Major, major,
crushing. Alan Scott had
the weird, for Robbie Clinton.
Alan Scott had the, was the Green
Lantern from like the 40s, 50s.
Predated. But he wasn't part of
Oa. He made his own ring, which I'm
sure we might talk about based on the show.
I was going to say people were saying, Alan Scott
vibes with John Stewart in the family.
And then he had a purple
cape. Yeah. He had a
mat. He had a Zoro mask. He had a red
shirt, his ring looked like
the lantern. Like it was shaped like
a lantern and his weakness was
wood. Wood. Couldn't affect
wood. Yeah. He couldn't affect
so lanterns like
like for a long time how Jordan couldn't
his he was weak to the color yellow
I'm sure we'll talk about it. And then
Kyle Rayner wasn't affected
by the color yellow. It was when he fought Mongol
in that in that run we were
talking about and but Alan Scots
was wood which was
so weak. It's every
Everything about Alan Scott is old school.
I think it was like a train crash.
Was it a train crash?
He originally discovers like the meteorite that he makes the lantern out of.
And also like a loose fitting red shirt.
Yeah.
And a day and age of everybody being jacked.
He had like a blouse on.
He was the one when Kyle first got the ring and all the lanterns were no moss
because of Order 66 or whatever it was.
Yeah.
Alan Scott is the one that showed up and told Kyle Rainer about what it means to be a lantern and then vanished.
Like in the mist.
But then he's also his girlfriend's dad later on.
And that's a very fun dynamic because they're like doing something together.
And he's like father-in-law.
Yeah.
He's like getting on his ass and everything.
So cool stories.
I like that.
My favorite part about what we were just recording separately was in back-to-back episodes.
We had Jose and T. Bob.
Obviously, not.
not knowing what the other had said mentioned the Jeff Johns run like all the John
the Josh goes the John and I'm just like what the fuck are you guys talking about the guy
we're dealing with a Jeff G E OFF that's Jeff G-O-F that's the kind of Jeff G-O-F I love his
Aquaman run his new 52 Aquaman run I think is all it's very good too he had a lot he had a lot
he had a lot of swing there for a minute I haven't kept up with him as much lately I mean he was
unfortunately I think I think the Greenlander movie kind of fell at his feet he probably got out of
his control knowing how Hollywood works, but he probably has to bear that cross for you.
I would like to shout out, I know we got to show.
I would like to shout out Jud Winnick, though, because I don't know what his reputation is among
comic book fans.
I don't know how beloved he is.
I didn't even know he came from real world at the time, but like the Judd Winick stories
in arcs to me meant a lot to me growing up.
That's where Terry was when he got attacked.
That was the creation of ion and the battles that he would have with this village.
Nero, who is probably completely forgotten the time.
You want to talk about some of the most badass art you've ever seen.
I think it was Daryl Engelsham or something maybe.
But like the, because Nero and Rainer would have construct battles that were out of a fantasy novel.
Yeah.
It would be the craziest most powerful constructs, yellow and green going toe to toe.
And it was awesome, dude.
I think we don't, we don't get enough Nero because of the, because Jeff Johns,
and Grant Morrison, I'll throw in two,
brought Hal Jordan back to the forefront.
Kyle unfortunately became such an afterthought in lantern lore in the late 2000s,
that all of his great villains were just also an afterthought,
like Major Force, like Nero.
But I'm glad you brought all that up.
Nero was sick, dude.
Nero was bad ass because he would just create like demon babies out of yellow,
like energy to fight Kyle.
Yeah, 10 out of 10.
And I mean, the way Jose was just smiling there, as T. Bob was diving into it, I was like, man, he, he, he, he, he hits a spot at Jose that we can't even dream to hit Bobby.
Me too.
Instant right admission from Jose, blank looks from me and club.
No, no, no.
Feeling of mutual feelings.
All right.
We're like, Miro.
I remember brother.
The guy with the long red hair and then neo trench coat and no shirt, but like 12 abs, very 2000s.
Let's when talking about the lanterns finale,
let's start with just broad strokes.
What did you think about it?
For me, I liked the majority of it, I'll say.
There were some hangups I had with like some character choices towards the end of the episode especially.
Where like I'm almost, I need to like talk through it.
I don't know how I feel about it quite yet.
When people are criticizing like we didn't get enough action, not enough constructs,
For me personally, that that didn't really become a hang up for me.
I didn't really mind that.
Clem, what were your thoughts on the finale?
So actually, our boy, KFC hit me up and was like, hey, what did you think about lanterns?
And obviously, Kevin's more on the, we'll just say, pessimistic side of things usually in life, if not all content.
So I was kind of like, how do I answer this?
And what I said was, listen, I liked it.
I didn't love it.
It wasn't like a 10 out of 10 for finale purposes.
But I liked it.
I really just loved this show.
I love the actors.
I loved all this.
And he was kind of like,
I'm with you on that.
However,
I also am like,
I think the reason why I said I liked it was because I was like,
it didn't really do a full wrap up.
And listen,
it's a season one finale.
I also met the point where it's like,
I don't know if I want stuff
cleanly wrapped in a bow anymore for every single show,
especially the first season of a sprawling comic book story
that is going to hit multiple projects in a franchise.
So I liked it.
I see there are a lot of people very upset.
said about it. I'm most certainly not that. But again, I am a babe in the woods compared to the two
gentlemen below me on our, our chat right now. E. Bob? I, look, I would say that for me,
I think it worked because, and you alluded to this, Robbie, and already we're kind of so far afield
from Lanner and lore. And I am someone who, when you're talking about comic book characters,
I treat it like it's our modern day mythology, right?
Where like you can tell a zoo story
and you can tell that zoo story in your own way.
And I'm not someone who's going to be like,
oh, well, you have to do it.
You can take from here and take from there
and you can hodgepodge together your kind of own story.
I think they did that.
And I think it really worked for me.
And the main thing, like you said, right,
it goes back to the actors.
Everybody in this show, I thought,
really nailed it. I love the pathos of all the characters.
And I thought it was a pretty bold swing in the age of superhero CGI glut to to reject that and say,
actually, we're going to bet on the fact that you care about these characters,
their development and their story to carry the finale.
And for me, it worked.
Now, obviously, I want more.
I want to see where everything goes.
But yeah, like, to kind of be so restrained.
in that final episode is a pretty wild choice.
And for what it's worth, I think they landed the plane.
What about you, Jose?
I agree.
I really enjoyed, I agree with most of that.
I really enjoyed the risk they took of not wrapping things up.
Or like, when we were on, I was on your show, I was like, I want more constructs.
I want more lantern.
I want more space shit.
I want more aliens.
I want to see John in the suit.
I want to see more lantern things.
things, right? So I was hoping that we would even get a tease, like at the end, see John in the
suit, like just like, like Smallville. We all wanted to see the suit and then we see it at the end
and it was like great. But that was the finale finale. I get it. I wanted to see John do space ship.
The coolest parts in the entire series for me were John on Anton's planet with Sinestro.
Amazing parts. Great acting, space stuff, everything all of the above, gave a lot of lore
to the lanterns.
Parts of this felt like a free form show to me.
Like when they're at the high school football game
or when they're arguing in the bleachers,
stuff like that,
it just felt like an ABC family show at times.
Like we were watching like pretty little liars or something like that.
But I get the budget's probably not there.
I'm hoping next season,
if there is a next season,
that there will be more, quote, space shit and more.
because the part when he made the
when he was digging through the dirt
and John made that cool thing
10 out of 10.
Loved everything about that.
I felt like we got teased a lot with it
and I just wish we saw a bit more.
But I really respect that they stuck to their guns
and didn't just give fans what they wanted
and just dangled it in front for next season.
I will see to your point, Jose.
I did find at the end of the episode
that I was maybe a little concerned that like,
okay, if we stick with
John into a next
season here and he's Earth's
lantern. Does this
because the true detective
kind of style, the very grounded, gritty
style definitely worked for this season.
I agree. But does it work if you stay
there? If he stays not in the uniform
and he stays on kind of an
earthly beat, which earthly beat could be fine
because you can still work in a lot of stuff.
But yeah, I have
to imagine that going forward
you'll probably have to
you'll probably have to evolve a bit beyond that.
Yeah.
And I think, I'm sure you will talk about it.
But when they said,
I got one when Hal is trying to get Detective Kerry
and her son to Guadalajara.
He's like, I got a friend.
I got a trusted friend.
I'm like, well, that's Ollie.
That's Oliver Queen from Arrow.
Oh, shit.
That would be awesome.
So especially, or like episodes ago,
when he has that giant house that's empty,
with his plant.
And they're like,
would you get this?
He goes,
I was gifted me.
I'm like,
that's Ollie.
That's Ollie.
I didn't even think about that.
That's Ollie.
So if they're doing the grounded approach next season where John,
they're just sending guy into space for Superman stuff.
And John Stewart is the Earth Super Earth Green Lantern.
They could just do the Green Lantern,
green arrow arcs from the comics.
That would be sick.
That was grounded.
That would be sick.
So I think if they want lantern on Earth and not space,
that's the route you have to go.
I don't know that for true.
If that's where they're,
going, but I don't know many super rich people that Hal Jordan would know and trust enough
to give him a house outside of Bruce Wayne and Ollie.
And he has the history with Ollie.
So that's my theory.
I don't know if that's true, but I think that would really work for next season.
It's the brave and the bold.
Then, yeah, they've been together forever.
That's right.
And then kind of, you know, we're thinking next season with this.
But now that they're going to be taken, now we have the John Stewart Green Lantern action figure
fully formed. I guess we could throw a suit
on him at some point. He can now go into
Manna Tomorrow. He can now go into
all these different projects. And when he
does a fucking cool-ass construct,
all of us to watch the show goes,
that's what John does. He's fucking awesome.
He's an architect or whatever he has to kind of
brain for it. And anything he does
is going to feel earned. And that was
my favorite part about, especially the beginning of the show,
I was like, man, I feel like we're getting
a fully developed character, which
was like kind of Marvel's fatal fall
in all those TV shows we watched. We were just
getting these half-baked things.
I'm like, how is this thing half-baked?
You gave us eight episodes that were like an hour of pop,
and I still feel like I don't know anything about them.
So I do think having just that lantern, whether it's a Superman movie,
Justice League, whatever it could be plus then a season two,
which is something, it's a real world thing.
We have to kind of throw into the mix now, which is an X factor,
is this merger just went through, right?
This morning, I think I read that it went through.
So now it's like what happens with budgets, what happens with projects, what happens with
timelines, I would imagine.
between the penguin and lanterns and the numbers,
they're going to pretty much be carte blanche,
but you really never know what's going to have.
I mean, if anyone's working corporations before you know,
any change is usually just bad.
It's just not a good thing, usually.
As of now, they did say they're keeping Peter Safran and James gone.
And like you said, mergers, he kind of never know.
But the plan now is to keep them.
Chris Mundy, the show writer, is back for season two.
He did an interview where he said they will stay on earth,
I think for the story, but I would imagine the budget go through the roof after the numbers for
this show are just amazing.
So you would hope some more constructs, some more of John Stewart in this suit.
I was hoping for a little bit more of the halogram.
I don't know if that's going to happen.
I know Sinestro mentioned in this episode that he has a way to bring Hal Jordan back.
I don't know.
Parallax, right?
Is that parallel?
No, it's it's Specter.
It has to be Spector.
Oh, shit.
Oh, yeah.
So for those who do.
So Spector is basically God's wrath.
He is like a deity, right?
He is on par, I would say, maybe not as powerful,
but in the Marvel universe, like the Living Tribunal.
He is the judge of space and things like that.
To the point where in the DC Marvel comic books of the 90s
where Kyle Rainer fight Silver Surfer,
Living Tribunal and Spector are the ones trying to fix it.
They work together.
Now, Spector, I cannot remember the original Spector,
but he moves on.
the afterlife. And how sacrifices himself to restart the sun, Earth's sun, which was eaten by a
sun eater. Wonder what that one. That thing does, naturally. He, he sacrifices himself to restart
the sun or relight the sun and he ends up in purgatory. And I think I might be wrong, but he's like,
either asked or volunteered, someone else volunteers him to become the new specter. And how Jordan comes back to
life as eventually through the Specter world.
It is kind of interesting to consider that because I think one thing that we learn about
how in this show is he is for all of his negatives, he is at the end of the day.
He has a very pure heart, right?
Probably the main thing that reinforces that is him going back to Rushville after everything,
constantly trying to help out around the town, despite the fact that everybody still
hates him, right?
like he his intentions are very pure so that would speak to maybe him becoming a sort of justice
specter because he believes that but it's going to be tough for kyle chanler to be charming
a spectre because spectre is about as dower and and self-serious and there's there's not a lot
of humor yeah in uh in specter and how specter specifically they i feel like he was so underutilized
like he became specter as a springboard to bring him back
into the real world rather than serve as Spector.
Yeah.
It's also, it would be hard to pull off without him being parallax first because he becomes
Spector to make up for the crimes he did as Parallax.
Yeah.
It also could have been alive from Sinestro, I suppose.
Totally.
Sinestro could have been lying just to try to get that ring.
I didn't know if I was supposed to take a series or not.
There's also a lot of like, it felt like Sinestro had a lot of dialogue in a little bit
amount of, like in a little amount of time.
Or even, I didn't understand why the halogram was going to go away if they recharge the ring
right away.
I liked the lantern he crafted where it was kind of, people said it was like that Japanese art
where they used like gold to forge something.
And it's like a new version of it.
But also, we know the gold can be, I was thinking, are we getting a yellow ring by the end
of the episode?
Like I thought when he charged it, the ring or the lantern was going to turn yellow.
I was shocked when it was green.
Yeah.
I just assumed the entire time he was going to have a yellow ring.
I thought that could have been a cool Twitter, but obviously we know we're going to see him next in Man of Tomorrow.
I was like, I don't think he's going to appear as the yellow lantern in man of tomorrow.
It just seemed like he probably will be the Green Lantern with like a cool construct suit in that.
I don't know.
I mean, Jose, I would ask you this is how they treat the concept of fear the biggest diversion.
Oh, yeah.
From like comic book green like because as we talked about last episode, like,
fear in the comic books,
fearlessness was just always assumed
to be this inherently good thing
and it's what you had to have it.
And it was awesome, right?
And fear was always inherently bad
and it's what the bad guys took advantage of.
But like the whole takeaway of this show
is that fearlessness
is very flawed,
very fucked up in a lot of ways.
It means maybe you don't love,
you don't have these sorts of things
that maybe a little bit of fear is good,
even to the point where you have the yellow lines
streaking the lantern.
So we're really in kind of uncharted territory.
I would say in that regard with how they're treating the concept of fear in the show universe.
1,000%.
The yellow, because like you alluded to, Guy Gardner had the yellow ring in the 90s, right?
And he got that from Sinestro's.
I think it was his corpse.
He went to his crypt to get it.
And that was made by the, the weaponer.
The weaponers.
Okay, sorry, go ahead.
The weaponers of cord made it.
And they are, they, they.
love chaos and disorder.
They are the antithesis of Oa, essentially.
So it wasn't created as something bad.
It was just, and it's also not, in the comic books,
it's not like fearlessness.
It's just willpower, right?
And willpower and bravery.
This whole fear versus fearlessness thing is very for the movie, right?
Because the yellow rings weren't evil.
They just were used differently.
Also, they weren't charged.
with a lantern. They were charged by
fighting other lanterns.
So like if you
you could siphon the energy
from a lantern to charge your yellow
ring or at times, I believe it
was Sinester that did it where he had
no energy in his ring and charged
it through the air because
everyone around him was afraid.
So the ring sends fear
and he just siphoned it out of the air
rather than a physical thing.
You also had the
you all we'll talk about it, but the old, I don't want to
ahead of it, that lantern that John Stewart
did at the end. A lot of people were upset about
that, changing the old.
It's happened a thousand times in the cover book.
That was a non-factor for me.
But the yellow, the yellow
lantern does have its own oath
from Sinestro, and it's not
that. But yes, I agree with 100%.
The fearlessness versus fear
180 from the column book.
Boys, I thought we might be getting like
some sort of an outcast lyric
was going to be part of the
what outcast line. Can they just
sneak in there. Dude. Litter, glitter, gloss. That would have been awesome.
Get his ring running like Randy Moss. He's just really intent on proving he knows the lyrics
over and over again. I was, yeah, I was wondering that. So let's talk about like the big thing.
I feel like let's tackle kind of the big twist. We find out that Noah was the person that went
and saved Hal Jordan at one point and revealed to Hal Jordan. I know what I am. I know that
a man, Hunter. Although Kerry hasn't told him, and he's like, don't tell my mom, she doesn't know,
I know. We later find out the truth about his murder in that it was Carrie. And she turned around
in a moment of panic and in a moment of fear, really. And she shot him in the head while he was suggesting,
not that he was going to kill Noah or have to, like, imprison him. He was like, I'll take you to Guadalajara.
Like, we're going to find somewhere where we can go and be safe. And she just, I guess, got so
unbelievably frazzled in this moment.
She turns around.
She shoots him in the head.
He just sits down on the bench, like as he gets shot.
I don't know how I feel about this still.
And I've seen some of the criticism online where people say, and I kind of agree, I don't
know if the carry we saw in the last seven episodes has ever been so impulsive.
And you could say she never had her backup against a wall to that level.
But it was just, it was strange to me that he was suggesting a way to escape and, and,
be safe and she reacted like that.
So, so I run into that at all.
Do you guys?
So I, I don't know how I feel about like maybe that it went down because it's really
brutal and tragic that they're in love.
She kills her lover.
And then John's just like, I think we can just let him live.
Right.
Like that, like, that.
So like, I don't know.
Yeah.
It kind of sucks that it went down like that.
But I think I do understand her motivations here.
because they they she basically says that she's had this sort of damocles hanging over her her entire life right where where john's like you know my mom that entire she's been holding her breath her whole life and she's she admits as well so yeah i've been terrified and so although hal isn't threatening to kill him he is threatening to kind of in some ways blow up his spot which would by extension maybe kill him right like she's thinking i've been in rushville
Nobody knows this.
Why would I call attention to this fact?
If we suddenly run away to Guadalajara,
that's going to raise alarm bells.
It's going to put him on a radar that, in my opinion,
he may not be on right now.
And so it's not that he's directly threatening,
but I think that even the thought of like,
because if she acts on him being a manhunter,
then it becomes real in a way that she's at least convinced herself
that it is not real,
even to the point where she didn't know that no one knew.
Yeah.
Right?
Like she thought Noah still didn't know.
So she's really been gaslighting herself.
Nobody knows this.
It's a secret.
And I cannot let it out.
So when it gets threatened, she just snap.
Yeah.
I don't know how I feel like you said too about the fact that like we're just going to let
him live.
And I'm okay with letting him live.
I kind of like the idea of like there's this guy and he might one day turn and we got to
watch out for him.
He also wants to be president.
I'm like one day can he run against Lex Luther and Lex Luther?
And Lex Luther's running against an alien president.
Like that would be cool.
But I don't know.
how I feel inside about the fact
there were like no consequences for
Hal Jordan's death. Like that
to be there's some kind of hang up
where I was like, listen I know he loved Carrie
but she shot him in the head like I thought
when she said like just let me watch this game
is like are we going to go like
are we going to arrest her after this game?
Like maybe that's not what Hal would have wanted
and I even ran into that a little bit
when he when he pays
the ransom to
Maggie was it at the diner.
And he leaves the note I'm sorry. It's like
I understand that that's what Hal Jordan was trying to do.
No matter how much the town hated him,
he's trying to help and he's trying to pay back what happened,
or make up for what happened in some way.
I didn't know how I felt about that, though.
I was like, fuck her.
Don't pay her the fucking ransom.
So, like, I had a couple of those things throughout this episode
where I didn't know how, like,
I didn't know if I liked that or not.
Clem, did you run into any of that?
The Maggie thing, but then I was like,
I think it was kind of like the money was him,
it was money he made after he turned down the lantern life.
And now that he's back in the lantern life, the money's useless to him.
So he's just like, whatever.
Yeah, okay.
And it's like, I think 300K for watching your dad explode and your town just rained down on you.
That's probably a fair.
Again, reparations, bad words to use.
Bad.
That was the reparations.
I was like, come on, man, you can't say that.
I, you know, almost if like, if, and again, Hal's not going to do anything.
He didn't have the ring.
He didn't have the powers.
But if Hal was doing something.
where he was about to hit like a send on a message saying,
I got a manhunter in Rushel, his name is Noah.
And she shot him to prevent him from sending the text.
That felt like it would have been a little more earned of a, like,
reason for her to, it was like DeNaris just going from,
I'm kind of sad.
My friends are dying to burning down Kingsland.
Spoiler for anyone out there.
So I'm with you on that.
Some people would say the Noah twist wasn't a twist because some people told you in episode
one that the noodle armed
fucking recent was a fucking problem
and that person
whoever that may be was fucking right
and I know he might that person might have also said sparky
was on the suss list in the first episode of Wanda vision
and then Sparky got killed but that person
anyone that told you know it was a manhunter
oh wait that was me that was
that was the best friend I probably the only one I'll ever have on the show
maybe your best call ever episode one
you saw a little kid throwing a football
and you were like he
That's the answer.
It's right in front of our face the whole time.
And I was like,
clan,
this is,
you know,
you put dogs,
you put kids,
like you go right to the people you wouldn't expect.
And then it winds up being literally your best call ever.
I did think we were going to get some kind of cloning something when they cut to that little
circle on Hal's arm when he wakes up with Noah.
Yeah.
Is there going to be a clone of some sort?
Like,
still that circle,
I guess it's just the healing circle in some way,
but that scene was even good.
I would have liked to see Noah be a little more badass, too.
I know he could have kicked out Jordan's ass, but I would have to see that.
You did have some menacing to him when he comes out of the hole, right?
He had a little mess to him.
But it's like, again, maybe I don't know if we're going to get him in the future here.
All right.
Trustry, everyone, raise your hand.
If at some point, whether it was the little cloning dot or it was the ring stuff with the charge
or was Sinestro singing and bring him back to life, where you're like,
Kyle Chandler's going to be back to life.
Oh, absolutely.
I'm still hoping it.
I'm still hoping.
I'm still hoping.
And I know the writers said they were like,
yeah,
I don't know.
We kind of viewed this as like,
that's the perfect close to the arc.
But I'm like,
but you didn't expect Kyle Chandler
maybe to be the most beloved superhero
of the year where it's like,
you need to bring it back in some aspect.
Flashbacks.
I don't think it'll cheapen what happened here.
I think people just want it.
I mean,
imagine if there was a ring
that could bring people back to life.
So this is where my lantern
lore starts to wane a little bit.
Is this black lantern?
This is the blackest night,
this is the black ring.
Now,
it's way up there.
I would,
whenever we're done talking about the show,
I would love to get your five favorite lantern arcs.
This is top five,
top two for me.
It's essentially,
you can bring them back as like evil zombies.
But as we've seen in the show,
they rewrite a lot of lantern lore.
So if they're trying to bring him back,
it's either through parallax,
through Blackest Night,
through Spector,
just going to throw us a curveball.
But there are grounds to bring people back to life
several times in Green Lantern Law specifically.
And all of them were very well received.
You can't go wrong with any of them.
It would be strange to do them out of order
to do Blackest Night before Parallax Specter type things.
It kind of has to go in that sequence,
but it's also the most recent arc.
So it's the most fresh in the minds.
As like Marvel does, they usually pick the more recent ones
rather than the more popular ones from the 80s, 2000.
but the grounds are there.
And it's,
I mean,
it's comic books,
guys.
Yes,
correct.
Of course.
What is it?
Only the,
only the,
only the Waynes and Uncle Ben
ever say days.
Maybe the,
yeah,
so,
I'm not used to it.
Until Disney really took over,
the three that they,
Marvel said they would never
bring back are Uncle Ben,
Gwen Stacy,
and there was another one.
Oh,
and Bucky,
two of the three are back.
Two of the three are they back.
They are fully superheroes now.
I'm just waited for Uncle Ben to become the new Hulk or something like that.
And we've hit the trifecta.
Hal Jordan has sex with his boots on.
That was a big note.
The cut to him in the bed with the boots on that really made me laugh.
Oh, I didn't notice that.
He had cowboy boots on only wearing cowboy boots when Carrie's like getting up.
And she's like, yeah, I don't want him to like wake up alone or anything.
Do we buy that?
And obviously it's not going to be the man of tomorrow threat.
But some people are saying we have our first Justice League level threat
in Noah. Do we buy that they're trying to set him up to be something huge to that degree here?
I mean, if he runs for, if they do a huge flash forward or time jump and he is president
and he's a manhunter and he has, he could have his finger on the button of a bunch of lasers
to shoot down a bunch of planets.
As they teased, check off finger on the button.
Yeah, maybe.
But that would have to be a huge time jump.
Or, yeah, I, I guess they're laying the, that is, that story is not in the comment.
with books. Like the Manhunters are, but this whole NOAA thing is not, so I have nothing.
Are the manh hunters this feared in the comics? Like the way that they were talking about them where it's like superior technology, superior understanding of things.
Yes, for sure. They are the, I think especially for a while, they were the, the lantern's biggest threat until like the whole Sinestro core thing.
But they are, androids, not aliens, created by the guardians. They're like the guardians police. They are.
To the lanterns Jedi, they are these stormtroopers, but androids.
So some clones, they're androids.
Now, tell me if I'm remember wrong, Jose.
So they come before the court.
It was Guardians' first attempt at creating, like, a police force, like, to bring order.
But they had the classic robot thing of, like, well, the best way to enforce orders just to, like, kill everybody.
Yes, and then, like, nobody could do anything messed up, right?
Like, they were too extreme.
so you needed, you needed like a thinking, sentient being that could use discretion.
Consciousness, yeah.
Conscious and a heart and whatnot.
But that's where the show's illiteracy with the Manhunter's, though, is like, I don't know.
Nothing that the show did, though, made them feel that way.
No.
At least not the manned was that we saw.
Now, she had in her past, certainly, destroying that planet, and obviously he felt guilty about it.
But what was her name again?
Why?
I'm my blanket. Zoe. But like Zoe was a net positive, it seemed, on the town of Rushville.
And seemingly was even like willing to sacrifice herself over her guilt. Noah's obviously at war with himself.
So I don't exactly know how the, and that's probably one of the weaker parts of the show for me is I don't exactly know how the show defines Manhunter motives.
Like I know Noah tells us like you should be in my mind and and all these crazy plans that I've that I've that they're cooking up in there.
But but I don't I don't know.
It didn't fully land for me.
Even him breaking Sinestro out like he broke Sinestro out of prison, put him on the island.
And then Sanestro wants how to kill Noah.
Like there was a little bit of crosswires there where I was like like like it just confused me a little bit there.
Yeah.
With the Noah stuff.
And even when he like takes John St.
it out and then immediately is like,
it seems like he's intimidating him a little bit
on the way to the football game and then gets to the football game
and he's like, I want you to kill me after this game, I don't want to see it coming.
Is he also the first, or we led to believe in the DCU, at least in the live
action universe?
The first like Manhunter human hybrid.
Oh, I would imagine.
Like the immaculate conception thing.
That we know.
And I like that.
I like the idea of like he does have a little humanity in him.
And maybe if we steer him in the right direction, he won't flip that.
switch one day. Again, I like that. I just don't know how I feel about how he got there.
Yeah, and that motive you just said where a little human in him, that has been DC's prerogative
their entire in the comic books forever. It's gods and monsters like the, like the arc,
discovering their humanity, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, this guy. And then Marvel on the
flip was humans learning how to be gods and monsters. Yeah. It's, it's,
people getting, normal people getting power.
So I agree it was a very oddly toned episode,
but it is that motive is very on the money for DC.
If you accept it though, if you just like, okay,
this is what you're telling me and I accept it,
then it is interesting in that we just accept that Noah has,
we'll call it like evil, some inherently evil program he wants to destroy or whatever, right?
and that's battling with his human side.
I don't know then if I would love the idea of him becoming like the big bad villain
then that the JLA would go after because like the lessons that they would then talk about.
I mean, basically saying, like no matter what you want to do, you're a slave to your programming and you're never,
it's kind of at odds with what a lot of the show was about, right?
Even John talks about that.
A lot of programming.
Yeah.
Like breaking out of his program.
I mean, so, yeah, I don't know that he should be the,
I think he should factor into all these stories,
but I don't know that he should be the next big bad necessarily.
I also like, go ahead, Glenn.
Kind of like I was saying with Carrie, where if she, you know,
if Howl was about to hit send on the button,
maybe if they'd be gone like a few minutes,
like an extra two minutes during like that massacre,
where you see Zoe do some real fucked up shit, you know,
then you're like, all right, this is her without the mascot.
finally we get to see the true essence of the manhunters then we could be like that is inside
Noah and it is kind of funny like thinking like your son is 18 years old and I guess he was what
eight years old in that time of those eight years though his grandma I'm sure was babysitting him or around
alone with him and could say by the way here's senestro he's and this is what we can do this is what you
are and I guess that's the way of her teaching him what the manhunters is and then it just grows
along with obviously the nurture versus nature, you know, the love, which I guess a lot of people don't like, oh, he's not a killer because he's loved by his mom.
But he's saying he has these voices in his head screaming at him.
And I'm like, oh, fuck, nature is coming.
And I guess that's kind of what's going to be the whole Noah Ark, if they could.
Noah's Ark, Bob, like you're saying.
Noah's Ark.
The stuff where at the end of the episode, John Stewart goes and like reunites with his family and him and his mom share a big embrace.
Earl the plant is also in the background of that shot, which I enjoyed,
which I also think seems to imply that's not his actual reunion with the family.
I think they've been, you know, maybe slowly mending that bridge.
Some people had to hang up with that.
Why is he just forgiven his mom all of a sudden this too quick, whatever?
I actually thought that was nice.
And I thought the conversation at the football field with Kerry,
where he talks about what Teabobab was talking about,
like him realizing that his mom did everything she did because she was afraid, out of fear.
I thought that was like really well written.
I did like that.
I didn't like a quote I saw from Damon Lindelof this morning where he went on the official
lanterns post show, which was hosted by Straw Hat Goofy.
I like that guy.
He said there would be no superheroes if there were good parents.
And I found that to be such a strange quote to say when you're doing a show in the DC universe.
Like Superman was kind of molded by his good parents.
I was going to say,
mod, like, we're like, yeah.
Batman kind of did everything.
thing he did because he had good parents
to a degree. Like there's a lot of superiors.
I mean, you could say Spider-Man,
like Aunt May and Uncle Ben are his
parents, basically. They're the people that
raised them. And they raised them on, like,
great morals and values, and it's
the reason he is. That seems strange. I feel
like there's more superheroes with good parents than superiors
with bad parents. Yeah, that's a very Zach Snyder
thing to say.
That's crazy.
That's crazy thing to say.
And I don't think Lindelof
is on season two of this, which
I don't know if I take that as like a good thing or a bad thing.
I really like Damon Lindeloff and I loved season one.
But maybe season two without him,
maybe you get a little more Green Lantern lore heavy.
Maybe you get a little more sci-fi superhero heavy.
I'm not really sure.
Well, also got like Lindeloff, like maybe we're,
I don't know how, because again,
I've avoided reading like any behind the scenes of this
because I've wanted to approach a show just from my own memory
and enjoy the show and now start to dive into that stuff.
But like maybe I've exaggerated my.
head the impact that Lindelof has like he's such a name that maybe he's like you need a name like
that to get this going. Yeah. And then he's kind of providing like an overall sounding board guiding
light sort of deal. But like whoever made this show, who's the showrunner you said?
Chris Mundy. Okay. Like I trust Monday. Like this show is so good and I enjoyed the writing and
the character development so much that I would trust Monday going forward even without a Lindelof
guiding light. Yeah. What else in the episode?
So do anything big controversy?
Yeah, go ahead.
What did you all?
I'll sort of Bob and Clem here.
What did y'all think about like kind of how they handled Sinestro?
So I would have loved, I loved the actor that they got to play.
I mean, I was like captivated.
Anytime I was talking.
I would have loved a little bit more.
But I also understand they're trying to set him up for season two.
Do we think by season two he's going to have like a ring that he crafted like the yellow ring?
Because they already teased like he can't swim through that lake.
because it'll make you go fucking crazy.
Is he going to like do that and that will be what makes him go crazy?
If they go in that direction, I like it.
I mean, he's already, though, he already has killed a guardian at this point.
You could argue he's already pretty out there.
I mean, what?
Maybe I'm misunderstanding something.
What stopping him from crafting another ring and flying out of there?
Like did Noah?
Maybe Noah gave him the resources.
Like maybe Noah gave him the resources that he wouldn't have had otherwise to forge
ring like that could definitely be an explanation it is very funny though that you have the big bad
senester who's really really badass and he's like out of a boat guys i need a dingy like i need a little
dingy i'm fucking stuck on this island we just saw him in maximum security space jail and and he got
out of that but they just stuck him on this island he's like fuck i don't know what to do he'd definitely
rather be back in jail i think at least they get meals there and shit you know maybe i'm misremembering
but did he craft just the lantern?
He made him craft just a lantern.
He crafted the lantern that could charge Hal's ring
because that's true.
He would have been stuck.
So maybe he pulls the Alan Scott and makes a ring.
Maybe the accordions or the weaponers build him a ring and go scoop him up.
But I do like the theory.
I hadn't thought about it swimming through the fear goo and pot like the Ivan ooze goo.
And he becomes the supervillain that we all know.
I wouldn't like just a little bit more.
Just a little bit more.
Maybe I'm being greedy on my Sinestro, but just a little tad more.
It's like I understand the practical realities of time and making sure that shows
pace correctly and moving and what you can't get into or can't get into.
But yeah, I thought Sinester was maybe going to have more of a big bad moment instead
of just being kind of the avenue that they kicked off a lot of these other stories.
I did like seeing him though because those characters sometimes can feel so impervious and so
and vulnerable. I did like seeing him
like get waterboarded and feel
like very weak
when John is extracting
information out of him. Totally. And John
seemed like that was like a cool
John scene. He's going to fucking figure this
out. He's at his wits end. I like
that. Clem, were you a senestro guy?
You're a villain guy. You're the villain guy on the pod.
I am the villain. I was just
looking at this. I'm like, I can't believe I just bought this thing.
I saw it was like
the other way around on my desk
and I'm like, I was A.G. playing with this with his
friend. I'm like, yeah, he's a kid.
Kid.
He's a kid.
He's not a cold grown man and fathers of children.
So I liked Sinestro.
I don't know.
I didn't know anything about Sinestro heading into the show.
And I've really kind of, I've done the team out.
I don't want to get too into it because it, you know,
can spoil some stuff or lead me to think something's going to happen that might not
happen.
Again, I don't want a true detective this show like we did true detective season one and
start making all this stuff up.
Uh, I would imagine.
I have no clue.
I feel like, you know, they're like,
are the is the audience ready for a pink dude on the screen?
Because let's be honest,
if this show we keep saying you don't have to be a superhero fan to get into it.
The more Sinestro,
I think the more would have started getting really weird.
If we had lived in space a lot more,
it would have been a lot of like for the casuals out there.
Unless me and Robbie are not, you know, diehards like these two,
but we are more than casuals for sure.
And like for my dad,
who I was like, dad,
just watch the show you're going to like it.
He really did like it.
if there's a lot of like pretty heady shit you could lose people like that so senestro i did like
i would have liked a little more 100% agree with bob on that i think we just kind of forgot about
the guardians at some point you know yeah yeah yeah she's an awesome actress we had her for a while
she seemed really important and that like that was probably my biggest scrap it's like we just kind
of ended that one and maybe that happens in the books with the guardians but it's like these
fucking people are the reason this is all going
down and she was a very important part of this
and now she's just kind of, you know,
ghosted us. I feel like that
was, they introduced a lot of
characters and didn't really wrap it up.
Like, Anton, I know
he quote blew up in the tornado
thing, but he had a pretty
unbelievable scenes gone.
Like no explanation whatsoever.
See, Bob, they introduced
Carol. Yeah. Yeah.
At the funeral.
And I was like, yeah. I was watching
I'm like, oh, like, there's what, Star Sapphire right there.
Like major superhero in the comic books.
And then it's like, oh, yeah, I knew how.
And then just like walked away.
Here, read this.
I mean, Hector, Hector Hammond showed up for like five minutes.
So it's like all of these people like they're teasing us.
Like I agree.
I fully agree with a clam.
Anyone that would watch this that isn't like a big superhero guy, this is probably
the show for you.
But for the people that have read the comic books, they are dropping so many hands,
and gretel candy everywhere.
And I don't know which direct, which line to follow.
The general public's not ready for Chip.
They're not.
No, no, no.
I like the little mention yet.
Yeah.
One of them is a squirrel.
Like him and Mogo gets shouted out.
Yeah.
I mean, Jose, if you're like me, I, I would have loved to see Killewog at some point.
I, dude, I would get there.
Killawog, any of those cats or the, the one with the beak that I'm blanking.
Tomar Ray.
There you go.
I need...
Sickos.
I needed some...
These nerds.
I needed some other lantern to show up.
Like, that was...
I was hoping was going to be like a post-credit scene.
Like John does his strange hover and then flies away.
I know.
The wire work.
I was like, oh, he's on lie.
But I'm at war with myself because I love practical effects.
So I always want to champion practical effects.
But like, the fly looked a little weird.
That was like eighth grade stage.
When he flew away, it looked great.
You mean when he flew away, when he flew away in a very on the nose song was playing
where the lyrics are quite literally, look at that Negro go.
I'm like, what are we doing here?
What is this?
What is happening right now?
I don't know about you, Jose, too, but like from just a pure effect standpoint, I would have
loved a little green energy around them as they're flying.
I don't know why we don't get that.
telling me, and I want the, the, the energy around them flying and then the suits, I think should be like in the comics and the Justice League show, we're just like, yeah, here.
Like, the fact that you have to go home or like find a bathroom to change into your uniform is crazy to me.
I think they're, they're obviously terrified of the Ryan Reynolds suit debacle, right?
Like, because it went so sideways on them.
Horrendous.
But like, I agree with Jose.
The ring should be the suit.
Like, the ring should create the suit.
you should pop in and out of it.
Like the way he makes like the shield,
you know,
when Kerry's like fake shooting him,
because he's watching.
Like he just makes the shield in one second.
He should be able to do that.
You mentioned other lanterns,
kind of a post credit scene.
There's no post credit scene,
but what kind of feels like that
is the final scene with Guy Gardner.
How do we feel about this scene where Guy Gardner comes down?
John Stewart basically tells him,
I'm not going to be a green lantern.
He'll be like a lantern.
He's going to be Earth's lantern.
And he tells him you could kick rocks
if you think you're the Earth's lantern.
And Guy Gardner,
doesn't know how to feel like Guy Gardner
clearly wants to like push back but he knows
John is better than him in every conceivable way
some people are saying he didn't back down to Superman in that movie
so that feels a little like inconsistent with the universe
totally
guy would have fought my one takeaway there is guy would have fought
John Stewart a lot of people
like on the spot a hundred percent
guy is the most throw hands motherfucker
we've got in the entire Green Lantern universe
and believe in himself
still. Like, yeah, he's like
an asshole, but like, I think Guy
believes that he could kick John Stewart's ass, even if
he's wrong. A thousand percent. Yes, dude.
You know what that is? Gold tooth energy.
Guy has gold tooth energy.
Guy Gardner tried to
throw hands with Batman. He took the ring off
and tried to fight Batman. He's not going to try
to fight John Stewart. That's my
biggest guy for this whole episode. I agree.
That feels a little inconsistent with the
Guy Gardner that we've been introduced to and we
know. I sort of like the idea of him
being like, no, I'm not fucking
working for the guardians like the year they're their errand boy like i'm not doing that and taken
over earth i like that but i also know like eventually he is going to be the green lantern though right
like he's going to be in superman i think way more than guy gardener so i'm just curious as to how
that's all played really do you think hose like do you think the guardians will actually back
down to be honest i the the line that he tells guy to tell the guardians
I don't remember when that line was used earlier in the season.
So that didn't land with the amount of impact for me that it was supposed to be.
He's talking about the hearts.
If they search their hearts,
they'll find it within themselves to let me be.
The heart,
was he referencing the last time he saw Laura Linney,
he put the fucking crystal heart in a backpack and gave it to her?
Is he saying like,
I think that's a full circle.
Yeah, I think that's a full circle moment for the Manhunter,
not manhunter's not having hearts and stuff like that.
Okay, but yeah, but that's the angle there.
He's saying that like, I'll expose your.
for creating the Manhunters or something?
That's not why I took it, but I don't know.
It's said on that.
Yeah.
Like is that really going to make the guardians back down and just let John have a ring and
just let him dictate that he's now the lantern of earth?
Like does it encapsulate everything?
Is he saying like I'll let him,
I'll let him know you were trying to fucking get Hal Jordan killed?
And then the other green lanterns won't be happy about that.
I don't know.
That feels, I'm almost,
I feel like I'm taking a leap in my own head cannon there, but maybe.
I feel like they've really nerfed the guardians too.
like they created the rings.
They live on Oa where the energy is from.
There is nothing.
And if that battery is a, as we saw, a green battery that just happens to have a little bit of yellow, there's no reason they just can't cut that off.
How do we, well, how do we interpret, though, then, combine with what you were just talking about, Jose, how do we interpret, though, then the fact that John seemingly has some sort of willpower, lantern power that exists?
independent of the ring.
It's very bizarre,
unless it is quite literally
the Allen Scott route.
He does not have any connection
to the guardians either.
He created his own.
That's the only thing I can think of.
Unless the yellow lines on it
are eventually going to the cracks with the yellow
get bigger and bigger and bigger and then eventually
just becomes a yellow lantern.
And then they have no power over it
because fear was more powerful
than being.
But like we never got to explain how he
had the green bird construct.
Nope.
Without the ring forever.
or the halogram going without the ring on.
So he might have some sort of internal battery
or something going on there that I don't fully know
what the angle is going to be on yet.
Yeah, I don't.
And because again, like I feel like they,
I said this something the last one.
A lot of the John Stewart stories and this were,
I think, taken from Kyle Rainer stories.
Like Kyle was the artist, not John.
Kyle is the one that when he got his ring,
a lot of the weaknesses that Howl had, he did not have.
He could do things with his new ring that Hal could never do.
And that's what through Mongol and major force for a loop,
they would be like, wait, what's happening right now?
That is John and this one.
And they just, the bird thing, I forgot about that until the episode is over,
because I'm like, how did that happen?
Too many questions I feel like.
But season two will be fire, I think.
Oh, definitely.
And a good way to wrap it up was that final conversation with the halogram.
which again, I wish it wasn't the final conversation with the hell.
I don't know why charging on a new port
deletes all the previous content,
deletes your gigabytes.
But when he says,
don't be afraid to be afraid and very like cleanly spills out what this series is about,
basically.
And then when he asked John Stewart,
what were my last words?
And he says,
I love you.
And then we finally get from Hal,
I love you too,
Jr.
Like that was,
I got the chills.
I got bumped up here.
So I,
I do love it too because it works in the multiple levels of like it is how, you know, being sincere, being like, yeah, dog, you know, like you did good or whatever.
But it's also like he had one more joke in him.
Like, ha!
Yeah.
Got you say you love me, bitch.
Yeah.
And then he hits him with the week and he's gone.
Yeah.
That was great.
I really did like that.
He definitely knew what she said, right?
Like he.
Oh, definitely.
Yeah.
He knew what he said.
He was trying to say he had a knock, knock.
And yeah, set me up and I'll knock it out of the park.
Um, also one thing I wanted to know that wasn't from this episode, but was pointed out later.
Some people were like, oh, yeah, and he just abandoned being a vegetarian.
Apparently, when he told Kerry, oh, yeah, I'm not a vegetarian anymore because he went over to her house for the meatloaf.
Eagle-eyed viewers noted that he never touched the meatloaf.
So maybe he was just saying that.
It's like a guy to any situation.
Yeah, exactly. He's not, he's not swallowing.
He's just taking a bite.
I, uh, I thought that was kind of in like an interesting detail of this year.
And we've definitely covering it like, yeah, he's not a vegetarian anymore.
There's a there's a there's a there's there's a hanging storyline that is in my opinion the biggest in the entire show, which is if Matt Rule can't win a national championship with a manhunter and quarterback, then he's never going to get it done.
The pressure is on rule.
He has to make it happen.
If Nebraska does not win a Natty in universe lore, Matt Rule has to be fine.
to Nebraska. Bottom line.
And even if he does win, you know, they're going to say alien merchant.
He's an alien merchant.
I was seeing some people criticizing the play call at the end of the game.
They were like, were they?
Why are we running the ball?
Yeah, why are we running the ball?
And they're like the clock's off.
I mean, again, they did a lot of the sports stuff right.
They just stumbled in a in a couple of different areas.
Well, Teabobbobb, did you notice they did fix it.
They had linemen with linemen numbers.
They had Trich boys wearing 50s and 60s and 70s blocking for
their fucking superstar quarterback, which everyone's like, if he's so good, why is it 1414?
Because he's in a town of a thousand people, which even for Nebraska is a small town, right?
And that was a thousand before the fucking, you know, massac.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, there's been a million great high school football players who lose games.
Like that, that, yeah, I got no issue that.
But, Clint, that is funny.
I was, I was locked in on the numbers making sure that we had our O line fixed.
And they did, to be fair.
Do you think you're insistent on getting Matt rule?
Or do you think if they could have got another college football coach,
he's just going to another college?
I think Nebraska football was their kind of grounding force throughout the almost entirety of this show.
Right?
Like, and really honoring the setting.
It's in Nebraska.
Nothing means more to Nebraska culture than Nebraska football.
It's what exposed the alien at the beginning of the show.
Yeah.
So whoever the Nebraska coach would have been, would have always been, would always
been the guy.
And in the time of NIL, and listen, football college football coaches have been doing this for years.
And he'd go all publicity is good publicity.
But in the age of NIL, you get on an HBO show.
Oh, yeah, true.
And Nebraska is actually pretty good this year.
Like, it's gone well so far this year.
We'll see where it ends up.
Accurate lore.
They've been, they've been solid.
Yeah, I.
Oh, shit, what was it?
I did probably my favorite tweet of the entire season maybe
was Ken Jack quote tweeting the scene about like
when the alien gets exposed for not knowing Nebraska.
And he's talking about the tush bush where he's like,
that's the extent of your opinion on the tush push push.
This guy's not human.
This guy's not human at all.
That was an elite meme.
That's unreal.
What was it?
The sequel trilogy?
That's your,
you have to say about the last Jedi.
Yeah.
my my question to take away from this show t bob to kind of piggyback on yours here
when a full town shits on your front yard and writes out leave asshole oh yeah ship beforehand
and then put it in order of the letters or do they shit in order as they go so that was like
took a lot of work i mean you would think to draw it like to write it they'd have to do it by
hand but that's disgusting it feels like you're punishing yourself at that point yeah yeah
So what are you going to do in like a squat like duck walk while you're sitting?
The people of Rushfield, gross people.
They like Pawnee citizens like Parks and Rec.
Great, great reference.
They hate that.
Anything else from the episode we didn't touch?
And I think that was the majority of the stuff that I had.
See, Bob, what did you think about changing the oath?
I thought, I was a,
Clem, I thought it was going to be like a lyric
type type shoutout.
But I found that I didn't really care, to be honest.
I don't know.
He exists independent of
the Lantern core, the whole shows about him,
kind of rejecting a lot of the things that have been handed
down to him, forging his own path.
So it's in keeping with the character.
I think doing the oath in general,
while they pulled it off, I think doing the oath
in general could have been like,
it was going to be hard to land.
And they did a good job with it in this show where even the original oath is kind of cheesy.
Like it never felt out of place.
And I didn't think it felt out of place when John said his at the end.
We never got like a big trial version of the oath, right?
It was just.
No, no.
That was I was about to say that I was really waiting for the needle drop moment when John finally gets to say the actual oath.
That makes a lot of sense.
Because I was like, that's what we had been waiting for.
But like I said earlier, there's, I don't remember what issue it is.
it's definitely an 80s or 90s issue where there's a bunch of lanterns charging their ring up.
Kilowog is definitely in it and a couple others.
And they're all saying their own oath.
So it's not universal.
Oh, my God.
Dude,
you're tickling something.
I'll find it.
I'll find it.
And I'll find it and post it.
I might have seen it because someone posted like a big splash page.
And I think it's.
Yeah.
And some of them aren't even in English.
They're in like really language.
They're all saying it.
But there is this.
So that is canon.
So people, anyone that wants to complain that he quote,
change the oath, read a comic book because it's happened a thousand times.
Also, Sinestro does have his own yellow.
It's, but where your fears made into light,
let those who try to stop what's right,
burn like my power,
Sinestro's might,
which is the actual Sinestro core oath,
which is obviously totally different from the Lantern one,
but that exists too.
I thought
I didn't have a problem when changing it
I just wanted that moment where we got John Stewart saying it
Do we get two separate lantern shows
Do we get our space opera and our grounded Earth one?
I mean with the numbers that this did
I feel like anything's on the table
Yeah I mean James Gunn likes doing obviously
Now maybe he's kind of tired of it because like
All the Guardians movies and suicide squad two
Which again is fantastic
I don't think there's a bigger disparity between two
movies ever than one first two uh but like he likes weird comic book shit so i feel like part of him
would want to explore space opera type stuff but i don't know what the general public's appetite
would be necessarily i think it would be great for guy i think guy is the perfect guy for guy's the
perfect guy for james gunn's well yeah it's it's i mean it's a it's a what's he'll saying like
uh foreign man in a foreign land uh pilgrim on holy land
Yeah, yeah, right?
Like, it's like the most
Earth dude possible gold tooth
gym teacher thrown into
like cosmic battles and whatnot.
Because there is,
Guy gets his yellow ring
from Sinestro's corpse or crypt or whatever
with Lobo in the comic books.
Lobo helps you get there.
Yeah, I think it's called,
God, I cannot remember the arc it is,
but it's like a contained mini-series
of Guy getting it.
It's very,
So James Gunn can make you like Guy Gardner in the same way he made us like peacemaker.
Like you watch- I mean, I love Guy Gardner, the character in general.
Yeah.
But it's like he could take an asshole and by the end of it make you like cry tears if they're feeling.
Totally.
Jose, am I remembering this wrong?
Did Guy Gardner, did he play football at Michigan before he blew out his name?
Wow, that's an excellent question.
You're tickling something in my brain too.
I don't remember.
I'm almost positive he did, which is funny because then we could have a big tin rivalry within the lanterns.
That's so funny.
Guy like,
shitting all over Nebraska.
Oh,
I'm sure you're right.
Wow.
My memory,
he was like a great player and then he blew out his knee.
I don't know.
I can't remember if that's necessarily true.
Because in the comic books,
John gets his becomes the backup because guy is hurt.
Yeah.
And then John becomes a way better lantern than him.
So this holder only needs to be one or two is also not like,
times like,
or the South like five green lanterns at one time.
Who's the current green lantern in like DC?
Contenuity. Who are they focusing on the most right now?
Is it still how?
It's Hal and Kyle are still doing their thing.
I mean,
who was the guy that showed up with like a gun and a
Hooded mask for a minute there?
I haven't read in years,
but I feel like I saw a bunch of art.
It doesn't matter.
Yeah,
I'll have to remember it.
I gave up after Jeff John stopped kind of
leading the thing on Lancer and I tried.
I was like,
it's just not my back.
I wonder if this will kickstart anything for,
I assume there's.
a lot of people that watch this that are probably now like,
I'm going to check out some Green Lantern comics.
Go pick up the
the Kyle Rainer compendiums
are very good. You can get the
entire Rainer run and it's
really fantastic. If you're a fan of like 90s
comics or like
it's actually kind of a more Marvel-esque
story in a lot of ways
and that really works for me. It's got a lot
of kind of Peter Parker type vibes
to Kyle's story. But yeah, definitely go
check out some Kyle
Rainer compendium.
See, about what's your...
What's your five favorite lanterns arcs?
So, okay, number one with a bullet is all the buildup of Kyle Rainer becoming
eye on and battling Neuro.
Like, that stuff meant so much to me as a kid.
It was crazy.
And I don't know if these are separate arts again.
I've mentioned the hate crime thinking a bunch, obviously, because that really stuck with
me, him returning.
And I loved all the space adventures where he left forever, but then him returning to Earth and his relationships falling apart.
That was all very strong.
I really liked Emerald Dawn with Hal where you see like what it's like.
And it's my favorite version of OA because every version of OA, even in this show that we get in real life, it's so austere and kind of lifeless.
Whereas in the Emerald Dawn comics, it's like a police academy.
It's like there's a lot of color and very vibrant.
and it's very it's it's kind of more relatable in a lot of ways uh and then obviously i mean
emerald twilight where how goes crazy and the vator arc yeah and kills senestro and and and uh
kicks everything off that kicks kyle's story off and i'm trying to think hmm hmm i'm not sure
i'm not i'm not sure beyond that it's really just i mean i just love the entire kyle
i think this is such a fascinating conversation i wish we could do a lot of
longer because you don't meet a lot of people where it's so Kyle heavy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like Kyle's highs were high.
But before Jeff Johns took back, took Anne Graham Morrison kind of restarted the Howl love,
Love Fest, Kyle was kind of middling for a while.
Well, everybody, like I just remember growing up and the message words hated him because
you had all the old school Hal fans.
And it was years of them constantly shooting on Kyle demanding that Hal comes back, demanding
the Howl comes back.
And to me, Hal was always this monolithic sort of boring, kind of one-note character comparatively.
And he was always this kind of imposing omnipresent, like background force over everything.
So I always kind of had a bit of an antagonistic relationship, I would guess, with Hal in a lot of ways.
Though that is where Kyle Chandler really just put this out the water was he made me like how way more than I ever did.
in comic books.
And I made this comparison
with Robin Klan the last time I was on where
Green Lantern I said was like the only
hero in any
avenue that would have like the James Bond
conversation. Like who's your favorite James Bond?
It's who's your favorite Green Lantern.
Someone corrected me and said you could add Robin
to that mix.
Oh, true.
One thousand percent.
I love the ion
story too. I'm glad you brought
that up. That's probably my favorite Kyle
Rainer one. In terms of just Kyle Rainer,
I love the Omega Man arc that Tom King wrote.
I love the new dawn by
Ron Mars.
And I love Circle of Fire by
Brian King.
Oh,
circle.
Wait,
wait,
circle of fire was...
He's got from tinkling each other's funny.
Yeah.
I think,
yes.
That's when he's,
he's,
he's creating lanterns from alternate realities that aren't
really there,
but because he has the eye on power and fuse.
Something like that.
Yeah.
It's like the other reality.
Alex is the green lantern.
and he got stuffed into the fridge and everything.
It's like a five team up.
It's like a, yeah, it's like a five team one shot.
The new dawn is great.
That's like the first for the Emerald Twilight, like right out of the gate.
The Omega Man is its own thing.
It's like Omega Man, Omega Men, issues like one through 12.
I think that's the best standalone Kyle Arc.
But in terms of like overall Lantern lore, it doesn't get better than Ion.
I fully agree.
And then-
Circle of Fire.
And then the late, early, like, right, I think his first big arc was the My Brother's Keeper where his, it's the homophobic attack and Kyle confronts everyone. That's the one.
That's the.
But in terms of like lantern arcs in general, I love the Sinestra War where you get like the yellow versus green.
That's a Jeff John special right there.
I think that's what really got people in love with the Jeff Johns run.
Blackest Night, phenomenal.
Rebirth, phenomenal.
The Denny O'Neill one with the hard traveling heroes, phenomenal.
Rebirth to me was just filled with a lot of personal pain.
Yeah.
Because it felt like all the Hal Jordan lovers, like finally getting their wish
and Kyle being shuttled off to the side and him.
And, you know, he did the thing.
He reignited the core.
He saved the day.
He completed his ultimate mission.
But it was just a little bittersweet.
So I knew that Kyle.
And that's actually when I hopped off.
to be honest.
That's interesting.
So, for Robbie and Clem, Rebirth is where they reveal Parallax was actually a actual parasite.
Not like his alter ego.
Like, so they like exercised, yeah, they exercised the parallax like monster from him.
I like Green Lantern Earth 1.
I thought that was okay.
From like the mid-2000s, I want to say.
I like some of those Earth 1 stories.
Batman Earth 1 and Superman Earth 1, I thought were really fun.
phenomenal arc. There is
an old JLA
arc and I loved all the JLA
that had Kyle in it.
But there was one where they're
battling like a fantasy
witch of sorts.
I can't remember the name of it, but it was
really good. Circle of fire,
though, should be my top five. I'm going to have to go dig that
up and reread that. And I own
maybe the first blackest night trade, but
again, I kind of hopped off to like Sinister
War and the creation
of all the different cores and everything.
are that's not, I don't know nearly as much about that.
You can buy almost the entire Jeff John's run in one Omni now.
Okay.
So just plow through it.
And then I personally love the Greenland,
the hard traveling heroes, Green Lantern, Green Arrow,
where it's like hyper-grounded.
Some of that is a little extremely heavy content.
It's like a lot of racism,
religious persecution type things,
which is important.
RIP to everyone involves in that arc,
but yeah,
I think that's because I don't have a lot of lanterns trades.
I have a lot of lanterns floppies.
Yeah, me too.
In terms of like actual trades,
I really only have Earth One, Green Lantern, Green Arrow,
and then be Jeff Johns Omni, and that's it.
I remember like that,
I just have to dig through all my floppies for everything.
Emerald Knights growing up,
like I can still see the cover,
but it doesn't like,
I don't remember the story as much.
I don't remember how they were teamed up.
It was Hal and Kyle together.
And then I loved any, like we mentioned,
Brave and the Bowl green arrow.
I also loved when Kyle,
would team up with Wally and we would get some,
some, some Flash
Green Lantern action. I need, I need to see
Wally and Kyle. I love Hal and Barry.
That's how you could probably put Flash in that
conversation too. That's Silver Age.
That's the Silver Age. I mean, you got Jay Garrick,
who would have been Bronze Age, right? Along with Alan Scott.
And then, and then you have your Silver Age, your Barry Allen
and your Hal Jordan. And then you got Wally and
Kyle. You're 90s guys. I've seen people wanting
Wally to be the DCU flesh.
Wally is so much better.
I said Austin Abrams.
I feel like it would be a great pick for like if you wanted to do a Barry Allen again in the
DCU.
I love Austin Abrams from weapons.
He's in Resident Evil now.
I just think he's fucking great.
And all his movies,
he's running.
I'm like,
oh, this is perfect.
Fucking,
he's the flesh.
He knows how to run in movies.
They also.
And a bunch of people were like,
dude,
we're on Wally timeline.
Like,
let's do Wally.
They all,
they tried to do DC try to do this thing where like the blackest night
arcs they introduced all the colors of the lantern rings.
Yeah.
They tried to do something similar with flash.
Like there's the yellow lightning.
There's the red lightning.
There's the blue lightning.
That was horrible.
That was terrible.
Like blue lightning is like an artificially enhanced speed force and red was like having
connection to the negative speed force.
And white was like the god of speed,
which was very like if anyone watched samurai, uh, shoot,
Samurai troopers, whatever.
No, Samurai Troopers from the night.
Great shout, though.
Or like the Power Rangers,
it was like the white Ranger was like the guy.
Yeah.
Same.
I'm like, dude, enough.
Like, let's enough of this.
The, uh, oh shit.
I'm trying to remember what I was about to say.
You were talking about the different colored flashes.
I don't know.
I forgot.
Maybe it'll come back.
They tried to do it way too much.
And it was horrible.
So just keep that like lanterns,
the Jeff Johns nailed it.
And then it was just like copy paste, copy paste.
Don't do that.
DC.
All right.
This was a blast.
My computer's on 3% battery.
I've been looking at it.
I've been like, all right.
Yeah, it's a bad feeling.
We're going to make it.
Team Bob, Jose.
Well, very appropriate for the show because that was like the main tension point.
That was the main tension point for like multiple episodes.
I love that.
But luckily, once I charge this, I'm still going to be able to talk to you guys.
That's nice.
I love it.
Thank you guys for coming on.
I know the listeners are going to be very excited about this one.
And Clem,
We'll be back next week.
We're talking Vision Quest next week.
Ooh.
Well, has some very big shoes to fill.
I'll just say that right now.
Big shoes to fill.
All right.
Jose, it was a pleasure, man.
It was an absolute pleasure to do it.
Yeah.
We'll do it again.
I've never gotten to do this before my life.
That was quite a lot, a lot of fun.
