Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey My Mom's Basement listeners, you can find our episodes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube, and Prime members can listen ad-free on Amazon Music. We are going to get into an interview with friend of the program, Megan Anderson, UFC featherweight, who will be taking on Amanda Nunez on December 12th. She finally got that title shot. She has been gunning for it for years, so I wanted to catch up with her, talk to her about how that all came together. Before we get into any of that stuff, let me talk to you guys a little bit about 3Chi. Our friends at 3Chi, our presenting sponsor, are going through a little bit of legal trouble with their Delta 8 THC. The DEA is dropping down on it, so if you go to their website, 3chi.com, that's the number 3-C-H-I dot com, or if you go to their twitter page at 3chi cbd and i retweeted this too so you can go to my twitter page they put out a poll you could type
Starting point is 00:00:52 how uh the delta 8 has helped you if you've liked the delta 8 and let's try to save this stuff i think it's i think it's entirely possible that my mom's basement listeners can save delta 8 you could be part of history for now you can still go to their website and buy cbd products so go do that right now they still have some awesome stuff i mean they have the hemp products from cbd cbn cbg cbc vapes they've got lotions tinctures see they put pronounced tinctures on there i think that's specifically for me because i always say tinctures i'm going to keep saying tinctatures. And the greatest thing about this stuff is it's still formulated by a biochemist, so you still feel like you're taking that Bruce Banner shit.
Starting point is 00:01:31 All of their products are the strongest hemp products on the market. They use more cannabinoids than just CBD to help you achieve the effects you're looking for, including CBN, CBC, and CBG, like I just told you. And they're just designed to calm you. These ones won't give you that high. They won't get you zooming, but they'll give you that focus. They'll make you happy. They'll make you sleep.
Starting point is 00:01:52 They'll soothe your aches. They'll soothe your pains. You can shop for all of this stuff at their website, 3chi.com, right now. And if you use the promo code BASEMENT, you will receive 5% off your order. Again, you must be 18 or older to purchase. That one's nicer, 18 or older instead of 21 or older. So if you're in that little limbo area between 18 and 21, go for it. Get yourself some CBD. So let's talk about DC Fandome. Let's talk about the Batman trailer. I mean, Fandome as a whole, I don't have much to say about. I loved it
Starting point is 00:02:23 as a fan. I think more people are going to do it. I'm excited for the eventual Star Wars version of that, the eventual Marvel version of that, all that stuff. Good idea. You know, I think it proved that they don't need Comic-Con. The Wonder Woman trailer I thought was okay. All of the Suicide Squad stuff I loved. I thought that looked incredible. All the 70s, you know, war movie comparisons that are coming out. Love that shit. Trying to think, did I, the Black Adam stuff. Jeez, I feel like we've been seeing the raucous Black Adam in those Boss Logic pictures for years, but we haven't actually seen him. I want to just announce that I'm going to be playing
Starting point is 00:02:59 Jimmy Olsen in 10 years and put out a bunch of Photoshops of me. I mean, the Batman was the big thing, right? Everyone's talking about the Batman. I feel like everyone listening to this probably wants me to talk about the Batman. So I'm just going to get right into it. I mean, the trailer dropped. It's incredible. Robert Pattinson looks incredible as Batman. I'll go through the whole trailer. So the tone of it, let's start off right there. I mean, something in the way, Nirvana. it felt like it was created for me. Like this trailer felt like it was specifically curated to get an awesome Robbie Fox review. And I know that's a egotistical, narcissistic thing to say. I'm obviously saying that in jest. I'm
Starting point is 00:03:36 obviously kidding when I say that. But just the fact that they put a Nirvana song in a Batman trailer, like a regular song even, kind of made me geek out. Like, we're used to having this, you know, massive score behind Batman. Even in the grounded Dark Knight world, we have that massive Hans Zimmer score. Generally, I associate Batman with that Danny Elfman score. So, you know, I like that we're really,
Starting point is 00:04:01 really getting gritty with this. It felt like Seven. It felt like, you know, the Riddler looks like he's going to be a little more Zodiac killer-ish than we've ever seen him before. I know Matt Reeves said Paul Dano will be playing the Riddler like we've never seen him before. So I'm excited about that. And if he's the taped up guy in the beginning, you know, the trailer begins with like the sound of tape um and we see someone with wraps around their faces taping up another you know victim's face if that's the riddler if that's like a new look for him i'm
Starting point is 00:04:31 all in you don't have to do the you don't have to do the green suit for me uh i'm excited about it he's got the goggles on he kind of looked like a mix between hush and talon from the court of vowels and i think i mean we can get into it but i think it's entirely possible the Court of Vowels. And I think, I mean, we can get into it, but I think it's entirely possible the Court of Vowels will be a part of this story. And speaking of Hush, could the Riddler be a false herring for something larger in this movie? You know, that's a classic Batman trope. Bane was a larger tool for Talia al Ghul in a lot of larger Batman comic book stories. The guy who you think is the main villain the whole time may not be the main villain the entire time.
Starting point is 00:05:08 It would be perfect for a detective story too, right? They keep saying this is a detective story. A big twist if, you know, the Riddler isn't behind that. What if it is the Court of Owls behind it? What if it is someone like Hush, a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne? And then they also said this is about corruption in Gotham and how the Waynes are involved, right? Could you set up for the Court of Owls themselves?
Starting point is 00:05:31 I think you can. Batman, as far as he goes, I think he looks phenomenal. I think Pattinson looks great as Bruce Wayne. We saw a quick glimpse of him. You just buy him as that disturbed billionaire playboy. At least I did right away. I've been all about Pattinson from the beginning, so maybe you might say Robbie, you're biased,
Starting point is 00:05:51 but jeez, I thought he looked great as Bruce Wayne. He saved that boy like he saved Bella from the car on Twilight. I loved his look as Batman. Gritty as hell, right? He's got like combat boots on, kind of shoulder guards or shoulder pads still. And then he's got that cool cape with the collar. If you look at the artwork, the Jim Lee piece of artwork that he made for DC Fandom,
Starting point is 00:06:13 you can kind of see the cape in a clearer light. But God, I love the way the collar lays over him. It's kind of a noir-style thing. And Great Cowl. He's got that, again, I don't want to sound like a broken record, but that gritty feel, that leather feel. I like the cowl. I love that shot of him when he takes the cowl off in the Batcave and he's still got the makeup on. Unbelievably cool. Speaking of the Batcave, kind of looks like an abandoned train station. I saw on Fat Man Beyond, Kevin Smith and Mark Bernardin's podcast. They were, you know, talking about that. In Frank Miller's script for
Starting point is 00:06:51 Batman Gear 1 movie, which I believe had David Fincher involved to direct, the Batcave was an abandoned train station, and that's kind of how Bruce got around Gotham. He would drive the Batmobile through the tunnels, which I think would be really cool. Selina Kyle, I think, looks awesome. I don't think this is going to be her final costume that we saw in the trailer. It could be, and I wouldn't have an issue with that. I just don't think it is, and I do think by the end of this, we'll see Batman and Selina team up in some way. They're not going to be maybe friendly and buddy-buddy, but just in the way we've seen them team up in comics before, maybe to take the Riddler down, maybe to take Penguin down. You know, we saw Colin Farrell as the Penguin. I didn't even recognize him at first. He looks completely different, but he looks cool. And speaking of
Starting point is 00:07:33 looking cool, Commissioner Gordon. God, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon looks fucking perfect. God, I couldn't be more excited about this movie, for real. I'm gonna watch the trailer as soon as I'm done recording and editing this podcast, just because I'm not excited about it. I'm not jazzed up about it. A few random things about the trailer I loved before I get out of here and throw you over to the interview. I love the look of Gotham. I love the look of the Gotham goons. You know, they've got that Darby Allen type face paint. Reminds me of Batman Forever when they would wear the, uh, the goons would wear the skeleton face paint. They were under the black light and stuff like that. And then I love the Kevin Conroy tribute with the I am vengeance line. Just like he said, I am vengeance. I am the knight in the animated series.
Starting point is 00:08:16 What a fucking scene when he destroys that goon. Obviously, Batman's got something to prove. He's got to instill some fear into the criminals of Gotham because he's only a year and a half into his career as Batman, so he's probably still getting clowned by a lot of these kids. He's got to show them, hey, I ain't one to fuck with. I loved it. I loved DC Fandome as a whole. I'm excited to see a Mandalorian trailer. I hope we get it in a similar fashion.
Starting point is 00:08:42 They keep saying it's going to be playing during an NBA trailer, but fuck, I would love if they put on a little virtual Star Wars celebration for us and gave it to us there. That would be awesome. All right, I'm going to throw you over to the Megan Anderson interview now. Thank you for listening to the pod. Again, go check out 3chi.com. Help them out because they've helped us out.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Talk to you guys next week. One love. All right. Welcome back to the show. It is Robbie Fox, and I am here with a return guest, someone that was here actually since quarantine. It hasn't been that long. It is the UFC's Megan Anderson, and she's got huge news this time around,
Starting point is 00:09:21 which is why I wanted to catch up. She's finally got the title shot. She's been gunning for forever. It's going down. Amanda Nunez versus Megan Anderson on December 12th. Megan, welcome to the show. Welcome back. First of all, how are you? I'm good. How are you? I'm good. I'm doing well. Probably not as well as you are. Talk to me about this title shot. Talk to me about how you're feeling. How did this all come together? When did this all come together? You know is this is huge for you um it all kind of happened relatively
Starting point is 00:09:49 quickly um we've been talking to mick for a couple months now because mick he manages my division specifically uh between him and sean so i've been talking to him for a couple months about trying to get a fight and they actually wanted to renegotiate my contract and uh renegotiate a new contract and uh like yeah cool no problem and we started getting into the talks and he kept mentioning he's like hey like can megan make 135 can we can make 135 and we lit so last week on monday like we we had a chat with Clint, who is the head of nutrition at the UFC CPI. And, you know, cause I've done some testing with them and looking at my numbers, if it was physically possible for me to make 135 pounds and we just couldn't. If for me to make 135 pounds, I would have to at least lose 10 pounds of just pure muscle
Starting point is 00:10:46 to be able to make it, which like that, you know, is achievable, but am I going to be able to perform? That's a slow process in itself, like that takes time to lose that type of muscle. So we kind of like made the decision, you know, like, you know, mixed looking, we're going to figure it out, like we'll get something within the next couple months then on Wednesday I got a call saying maybe Amanda in December I was like cool I was like let me just call James um I have a feeling I know what he's gonna say but let me just run it past him first like because I'm in because I always want to run run things past my coach and I called him I was like hey baby Amanda in December he's like let's go I was like that's exactly what I
Starting point is 00:11:30 was like that's exactly what I thought you were going to say I'll let Tim know so we let Mick know on Wednesday that we're in um and he was just like look leave it with me, see what happens. And then on Friday afternoon, I think it was around like 3.15 my time, I got a call. I'm in, it's in, December 12th. And they wanted to announce it today. I was like, okay. I was like, sign my name wherever you need to. I mean, and that was pretty much it.
Starting point is 00:12:00 And then an hour later, they announced it through Brett Okamoto. And that was pretty much it. And then an hour later, they announced it through Brett Okamoto, and that was pretty much it. Unbelievable. So when you were, you know, in the past few months, when you were talking to Mick and having these conversations back and forth, you didn't know if you were going to have a title shot next or if you were going to have another opponent next. You had no idea.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Yeah, we kind of assumed that we're going to get somebody else the first um but this this is an opportunity that presented itself and i'm not going to say no i don't know i just feel like it's meant to happen when it's supposed to happen and everything that i've kind of been through over the last couple years has prepared me for this yeah of course and this is an amazing opportunity but if it were your way, would you have the fight sooner? Because it's going to be December, right? That's a long time from now and it'll creep up on us fast, but it'll be almost a year since you had your last fight. Would you have rather have had it sooner or are you cool with December? To be honest, I've been
Starting point is 00:13:01 training this whole time. So it's not really that big of a deal for us um I was planning to fight around July August before everything kind of happened and so you know just it's December it's not a big deal um I've I've fought with longer layoffs before and usually I've you know over the last couple years it's been around five to six months between camps or between fight days um this is just a couple of months extra so it's been around five to six months between camps or between five days um this is just a couple of months extra so it's not too bad so how do you mentally prepare to fight a woman like amanda nunez you know a woman who is the the greatest female mixed martial artist of all time a lot of people would call her that and immediately you'll see the doubters come out on twitter and
Starting point is 00:13:41 call this you know the craziest underdog thing. How do you tune that out and just mentally prepare yourself? Honestly, it's nothing that I, you know, don't prepare for in any other fight. She's a human being at the end of the day, like I am a human being. And, you know, everybody is beautiful. And, you know, you can call me cocky, you could call me delusional whatever the fuck people want to say at the end of the day I have 100% belief in my confidence and I'm confident in my ability to put on a show to to get the win and I'm 100 100% backing my team my skills and my abilities and you can call me whatever you want from that but it comes from a
Starting point is 00:14:25 place of readiness I mean you were scheduled to fight Chris Cyborg in your first UFC bout like you called her out for such a long time I remember you were the only one calling her out and it always blew my mind even before I knew you because you're relatively new to mixed martial arts in the grand scheme of things right that's what we talked about in our last interview, but you always just had that fearlessness. Yeah, and I signed on the line to fight Chris. That was, what, 2017? So I'd only been training MMA for four years. I'd only been training MMA for four years when I signed on the line to fight Chris.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Obviously, it didn't go the way that we planned. But I think, you know, I've been in this position before. Like, I was going to fight the greatest of all time before. And it's nothing that has ever scared me or ever intimidated me. Yes, I have had ups and downs along the way to this path. But I honestly feel like it's really weird I feel like this calmness about it like it's supposed to happen like I don't feel nervous I just feel ready like everything that I've gone through over the past three and a half years to this point
Starting point is 00:15:35 has prepared me to be the best the strongest the fastest the more skilled fighter than I ever have been. And I'm just ready for this opportunity and to really showcase what I'm about. Man, I'm excited for you. I'm excited about it. And the Chris Cyborg thing was the first thing I thought of when the people started coming out of the woodwork about this one. I was like, I think people forgot
Starting point is 00:15:59 like where the Megan Anderson story kind of started in the UFC. I know it was not that many years ago, but let's remember like who she signed on the dotted line to face. Enough about the mental game though. And you don't have to spell out the game plan. I'm not asking you to,
Starting point is 00:16:12 especially just in case Nunez is watching. But how do you actually physically prepare to fight a woman like Amanda Nunez? How do you game plan for Amanda Nunez, a woman who has some of the heaviest hands in all of MMA? I want to say I'm going to disagree on that last one, but. You're going to say she doesn't have some of the heaviest hands? I say I have some of the heaviest hands. I think both of you do though. But no, it's, I, fundamentally she is incredibly well-rounded and she doesn't do anything flashy. She doesn't
Starting point is 00:16:47 do anything crazy, but she fundamentally, she's incredibly sound in every area. So I feel like I just got to be on my game. I got to be fundamentally sound everywhere in every aspect, but also make sure that I'm unique to what got me there. Like I don't stray from, like I know that once that door cages in, if I can go out there and do what I know that I can do best, I honestly believe I can pitch a shout out. But it's not going to be an easy fight. She is incredibly tough. She is incredibly well-rounded.
Starting point is 00:17:24 She's an amazing athlete so am I and and I think honestly just being ready for everything but not not waiting because because I feel like what I did with the Holly fight is I waited too long to make certain decisions because I was waiting for her to do certain things that she wouldn't that she didn't do and honestly I just have to to make executive decisions when they need to happen and instead of focusing too much on my opponent's game focus on my game because when I focus solely on my game and I and I do what I know that I need to do I'm on like I and I'm on early and I just need to just, just honestly just quiet out the noise of the outside noise, the haters and whoever the naysayers.
Starting point is 00:18:18 I know we know our team knows that I am the best in the world and we're ready to showcase that. Man, I'm excited to watch it. I'm excited to watch the journey to get there. One final question before we get you out of here. A fun one. Your favorite fictional underdog stories of all time. Movies, TV shows, characters, anything you got. What's your favorite underdog story? Oh man, I don't know. I mean, mine is an easy one. Mine, I go to Star Wars right away. I'm like, the rebels taking down the empire. Come on, there's nothing better than that. This is true. Look, I feel like, I don't know, I feel like a Lord of the Rings type thing, like going that way, like, because they were, you know, it was kind of a big deal. Kind of an Australian, right, too? That's fitting they filmed that over in Australia.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Well, they filmed it in new zealand oh did they see i'm not a lord of the rings guy i'm a nerd but i'm not a lord of the rings guy so i'm off my game on that well like another one would would be like a harry potter type deal i i was a huge harry potter fan like i would so i would pre-order the books before they came out obviously because like this is how old I am um and I would make my because my so my grand my grandparents lived across the road from the bookstore that I would order the books from so I would stay with them and I would make them get up with me like really early and like go wait in line like hours before like the store opened so I was first in
Starting point is 00:19:43 line to get the book would you like read the whole book as quickly as you could? I had cousins who would stay up all night. They would go to the midnight opening and try to finish the book in a day. Pretty much, yep. That's unbelievable. If I was into Harry Potter, if I were a little bit older, maybe I would be the same way. I think my sister was that way with Twilight. I think she read those books like they were... Twilight was was like later like later for me so I was a little bit older and Twilight came out so I was a little bit different I was like books a little weird fact about Robbie Fox people don't know I went to every midnight premiere of Twilight because my sister was obsessed with them so I was like a little kid
Starting point is 00:20:20 and it was just an excuse to stay up late on school night so I was like yeah well yeah I'll definitely go that'll be fun I went to every Twilight movie midnight for me and it was just an excuse to stay up late on school nights so I was like yeah well yeah I'll definitely go that'll be fun I went to every Twilight movie midnight for me and it was kind of like an early like Avengers like when the the werewolves would fight the vampires the crowd was roaring like it was a UFC fight it was crazy I uh speaking of early premieres I actually the uh was it episode three I of Star Wars I went and uh and watched that the midnight premiere and I was in like grade I think I was in grade nine or grade ten and uh I my parents are so angry that I booked the tickets but they and they were for midnight because they're like I have to take you like I don't want to take you because it's like midnight
Starting point is 00:21:02 and like they forced me to go to school the next day. And I was so tired that I literally just cried like the whole day because I was tired. But I also cried because Padme died. And like, it crushed my soul. So sad. One of the saddest fictional deaths of all time. Died of a broken heart, nonetheless.
Starting point is 00:21:18 Yeah, man, we're really ending this on a sad note here. But listen, I'm excited for this. Like I said, I'm excited for this. Like I said, I'm excited for the journey. I'm always down for an underdog story. Even if you weren't a friend of the program, I think I would be rooting for you just in that, you know, I've always been that Rocky Creed. Let's root for the underdog. Let's root for the person that there are the naysayers doubting. So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen, Megan Anderson and look out for her in some Call of Duty MMA tournaments. She might not be in this week she might be in this week's i don't know it's it's
Starting point is 00:21:48 like a short notice you'll accept it short notice if you're in um but you'll definitely yes all right thank you megan no problem
