Starting point is 00:00:00 Tonight, from here in Paris, the final full day of Olympic competition and two epic wins for Team USA. The women's soccer team scores gold after the spectacular goal. Their celebration, 12 years in the making, while on the hardwood, LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Team USA's all-stars beating the French for gold. Plus, Olympic bombshell. American gymnast Jordan Childs may now be stripped of her bronze. How a four-second delay from her coaches may have cost her a medal. Breaking news back in the U.S., the Trump campaign says it was hacked and Iran may be to blame. The documents they say were stolen from them. Deadly attack in Gaza, more than 100 killed in an Israeli airstrike, according to officials there. New details on that terrifying plane crash in Brazil as investigators locate the black boxes.

Back in Paris, the new Olympic rivalry, how China became Team USA's toughest competitor. This is NBC Nightly News with Jose Diaz-Balart. And good evening. I'm Tom Yamas in for Jose tonight. Here in Paris, we are just hours away from the closing ceremonies, which will be the capstone to one of the most thrilling Olympics in years. And today was no different.
Starting point is 00:01:30 Many of the NBA all-stars on Team USA have won their share of championships. But there was something different about that gold medal victory over France today. On the soccer pitch, the American women were back on top for the first time since 2012. It was this goal that sealed their gold. We're going to hear from those players in just a moment. And on the final day of track and field, a clean sweep of the 4x400 relays with both the men and the women racing to gold. We'll also get to the outrage over Jordan Childs possibly losing her bronze medal in gymnastics over a mistake her coaches may have made. But we begin tonight with Stephanie Gosk on the final full day of competition
Starting point is 00:02:12 and one that brought some of the most gold medals home for Team USA. And for the fifth consecutive Olympics, the United States of America is golden. Make it five. Men's basketball won its fifth straight Olympic gold tonight in Paris in front of a packed arena. The lead going back and forth in the first half. The hometown crowd doing its best to will their side to victory. French fans may know that they are underdogs tonight. It doesn't seem to matter much.
Starting point is 00:02:45 They're hoping home court advantage, maybe a little bit of luck, will help them make out a win. But the U.S. stars were too much for the French team to handle. Steph Curry sinking eight three-pointers to get his first Olympic medal. Curry again. You already know. One of five goals nabbed by Team USA today. The women's soccer team capped off a dream run in these Olympics, beating Brazil.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Mallory Swanson showing off her lightning-fast speed with a second-half goal. And the flag still stays down. Swanson celebrates. As Tom Cruise cheered on from the stands. It is gold, glorious gold for the United States. The win ends a gold medal drought for women's soccer since the 2012 London Games and ushers in a new era with a team made up of dynamic young players. I'm a little out of words, speechless honestly right now. I'm like, oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Today's gold rush continuing on the track where Masai Russell edged out the competition to win the 100-meter hurdles. Look how close this is! And both the men and women won the 400-meter relay. Victor, for USA, the birthplace of hip-hop, can he bring it back home? In breaking, the men competed today. Victor Montalvo winning bronze. The Paris games are nearly over, just one day left, and Team USA keeps running up the medal count. And with that, Stephanie Goss joins us now. So, Steph, a big game and maybe history tomorrow. Yeah, that's right. The women's basketball team going for a record eighth straight gold medal tomorrow. Don't forget, you have the closing ceremony. Starting point is 00:05:52 The latest headache for the Trump campaign coming as the Harris campaign is touting record crowds, saying the vice president rallied 15,000 supporters in Arizona Friday night as part of the new Democratic Tickets swing state tour. He went around me and the fact is that this possibility he probably would have realized I would have probably known it's too late, you're going forward. NBC News has not independently confirmed Julin's account. The Harris campaign referring us to statements of support from other men who served with Walls. For 24 years, I proudly wore that uniform. Starting point is 00:07:35 Israel launching missiles and killing more than 100 people at a school it says housed a Hamas command center. Alison Barber reports from Israel. And a warning, the video is disturbing. Tonight, anguish in Gaza following a deadly strike that hit a school in Gaza City. Three rockets hit the Tabin school, killing at least 100 people, according to a spokesperson with Gaza's civil defense. There are also a lot of people who are missing, he says, a lot of bodies that cannot be identified. Israel admits they carried out the strikes, but claimed the school was more
Starting point is 00:08:12 than just a shelter for thousands of displaced Palestinians. In a statement released tonight, Israeli forces said in part they struck terrorists operating in a Hamas command and control center embedded inside a mosque in the school compound and killed 19 militants using three precise munitions. This was just one of a series of deadly airstrikes in Gaza over the last 24 hours. And civilians in the line of fire, all they see is devastation. Ellison joins us tonight from Israel. And Ellison, tensions were already heightened there about a possible strike from Iran. Where does that threat stand tonight? Yeah, Tom, a political advisor to Iran's supreme leader released a statement this morning accusing Israel of trying to ignite a regional war
Starting point is 00:09:04 and vowing to impose the, quote, harshest punishment on Israel. Tom. Ellison Barber for us. Ellison, thank you. Investigators are on the scene of that terrifying plane crash in Brazil. It's horrifying plunge caught on camera. All on board were killed. They now have the aircraft's black boxes as they try to figure out what exactly went wrong. Marissa Parra has the latest. New information tonight on this
Starting point is 00:09:31 haunting scene. A plane spinning slowly as it drops from the sky. Crashing in a Brazilian neighborhood near Sao Paulo, leaving behind an inferno of black smoke towering over the homes the plane crashed in front of. Brazil's Vopass airline updating the number of those who perished from 61 to 62, 58 passengers and four crew members. The airline saying the plane had passed a routine technical inspection the night before, adding they're evaluating icy conditions at the altitude the plane was flying at. While Brazilian investigators say ground controllers did not receive an emergency signal The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from the plane now were covered and taken to a lab There's something catastrophic that appears to have happened on that airplane
Starting point is 00:10:19 That caused the pilots to lose all control Brazil's president declaring three days of national mourning. Marissa Parra, NBC News. And back here at home, we're getting our first look at never-before-seen footage of the moments following that horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, two years ago. Priscilla Thompson has more on what the new tapes reveal, and a warning, what you're about to see can be difficult to watch. Newly released body cam video from the Robb Elementary School shooting
Starting point is 00:10:54 appears to capture the moment officers took down the Uvalde gunmen in a barrage of bullets. Footage from the day, some blurred or redacted by the city, also showing the chaotic aftermath as panicked officers rush to get children out of those classrooms. And administer aid after 77 minutes in the hallway, waiting to confront the gunmen. Everybody that's not a medic, out. Everybody that's a medic, not out, out, out. The release today due to a court order after a lawsuit from a media coalition, including NBC News. Among the material, desperate 911 calls.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Including this recording from a man identifying himself as the shooter's uncle. He's my nephew, man. He's a shooter. I was wondering maybe he could listen to me because he does listen to me. Do you know of any change in his behavior over the last couple of days? No, no, no, nothing, nothing. He just said that he was mad
Starting point is 00:11:57 that his grandma, Sally, was bugging him too much. A person identifying herself as the shooter's cousin also calling 911. As a shooter, he's my cousin and I don't want him to come to my house. The release comes as two officers on the ground that day when 19 children and two teachers were murdered face criminal charges. Former Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo was charged with 10 counts of abandoning and endangering a child. One count for each of the surviving children in those classrooms. A second officer, Adrian Gonzalez, faces 29 counts, which includes the children who died.
Starting point is 00:12:37 I've been scapegoated from the very beginning. Arredondo, who spoke to CNN this week, and Gonzalez have both pleaded not guilty. Tonight, the public seeing for the first time crucial moments from that heartbreaking day. Priscilla Thompson, NBC News. And still ahead tonight from here in Paris, a shocking Olympic controversy. The Team USA gymnast, who may now have to give her medal back. We'll tell you why. We are back from Paris with an Olympic controversy. In a stunning twist, Team USA gymnast Jordan Childs, who won bronze in the individual floor exercise,
Starting point is 00:13:19 may now have to give her medal back. Liz Kreutz explains why. Tonight, a bombshell decision could strip USA Gymnastics star Jordan Childs of her Olympic bronze medal in the individual floor event. The Court of Arbitration for Sports, CAS, ruling that an inquiry made by Childs' coaches into her score, which bumped Childs from fifth up to third, came four seconds too late. And because of that, Childs' lower score will now be reinstated. The controversial decision comes after a dramatic moment when judges accepted that inquiry in the final moments of competition. Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu celebrating her bronze medal,
Starting point is 00:13:57 then breaking down in tears as she learned that Childs had gotten it instead. Devastating. And then this iconic moment, Childs celebrating along with fellow medalist Simone Biles and Brazil's Rebecca Andrade. Everybody was crying and those are true emotions. But now the judges have reversed that decision, saying the appeal by Childs' team came four seconds after the required time frame of one minute. Four seconds? Four? In a statement, USA Gymnastics writing, we are devastated by the ruling. Childs' teammate, Suni Lee, calling the decision completely unacceptable. Simone Biles saying, sending you so much love. And her sister writing that the bronze was stripped over four
Starting point is 00:14:38 seconds of time that would have never needed to happen if the judges did their job. Also writing that racism is real, referring to what she says have been racist attacks aimed at her sister. Tonight, the 23-year-old posting broken heart emojis and writing that she's taking time off social media for her mental health. And Tom, the International Gymnastics Federation, which makes the final decision, has determined that Barbosu will get the bronze, but no word on if Childs will get to keep hers or not. Tom. Team USA dominates overall, but China's neck and neck with us when it comes to gold. Keir Simmons now on how China transformed its athletic programs, becoming one of the most powerful on Earth. Drama in the pool, China edging out the U.S. in artistic swimming China's athletes overwhelmed with emotion after their victory moments like these happening often at the Paris Olympics with U.S. and Chinese
Starting point is 00:16:01 competitors vying for gold. The competition, intense. The weight of expectation on China's 400 athletes comes right from the top, the country's vice president urging them to go all out to win victory. Student Liu Xinyi from China, who lives in Paris, says it's a national passion. As long as there is a game about China against U.S., of course people will watch it more. So if you watch it more, of course people will talk about it more.
Starting point is 00:16:34 And root for China? Well, yes. Because... The world's second largest economy, China has invested heavily. Athletes reportedly often selected at a young age to attend state-run facilities where they undergo strict and rigorous training to hone their skills. Though Xinyi believes China's athletes are under no more pressure than in the West. I think in China, I would say the requirement is the same.
Starting point is 00:16:59 Everyone and Team US wanted your athletes to win as well. In the past two weeks, the U.S. has again dominated track and field. But China's strengths are also in other sports that are not as high profile in America, like table tennis, shooting and weightlifting. While in swimming, the tension reaching boiling point, with controversy over accusations of doping, which China disputes, saying it's a result of tainted food. Sporting rivalry between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was an enduring feature of the Cold War.
Starting point is 00:17:31 But today it's China and the U.S., their Olympic rivalry, part of what spurs athletes to compete at the highest levels. Keir Simmons, NBC News, Paris.
