Tonight, new developments just in after that deadly cargo plane crash that stunned the country, the Amazon-branded jet, overshooting the runway, barreling into cars, killing five people and hurting five others, smoke pouring off the plane after part of it caught fire. And the video just in, look at this, a crew member appearing to jump from the wreckage. Police finding a survivor trapped inside a flipped car. The pilots making it out alive. how fast the plane was going, and the question tonight, what will the black boxes reveal? State of emergency, Hurricane Lowell barreling across the Pacific, taking aim at Hawaii.

The storm shifting again, heading for some spots already battered with relentless rain. Streets submerged. This farm underwater were live on the ground. And the tropical storm lashing southern California, huge waves crashing over homes. One surfer swept away. Holiday high, millions of Americans heading home with soaring gas and airfare prices making this one of the most expensive labor days ever. The scary scene on the campaign trail, the new images of the armed man accused of lunging at a candidate for governor. What she's now saying tonight, Miracle rescues in Nepal, a woman found under her collapsed home. A man pulled from a tunnel 10 days after the deadly floods.

our reporter with rare access on the scene where that devastating wall of water first hit. The secret documentary just out on convicted tech founder Elizabeth Holmes, which she revealed in her final days at home before reporting to prison. King Charles breaking his silence on Harry and Megan's return to the U.K., what he says about their royal roles. A deadly avalanche burying a group of hikers, the race to reach the missing. Good evening. I'm Hallie Jackson in for Tom, and we begin tonight with key developments, including the recovery of those crucial black boxes after an Amazon Prime-branded plane overran a Miami runway and slammed into several cars, killing five people and hurting several others. Take a look. This is the moment that plane operated by a company called 21-8. air touched down. You see it here speeding down the runway before skidding through the airport's fence and slamming into cars, including a van carrying seven people. Moments later, the plane burst into flames with that black smoke there billowing up, firefighters rushing in to try to get a handle on it. And here, officers finding a person inside a flipped over car that had its

front just totally ripped off. The pilots on board, becoming trapped inside the plane. One new video into us tonight appears to show a cruise. member, look at this, jumping from the wreckage, and here another person being stretchered away from the scene. Now, tonight, new questions, and a deepening investigation to try to find out what went so wrong on that runway. George Solis is at Miami International Airport and starts us off tonight. Tonight, the NTSB investigating how this Amazon-branded cargo plane overran the runway at Miami International Airport Sunday, killing five and injuring five more as the plane barreled into several vehicles before erupting into flames.

I would describe it in one word of devastating. Utter devastation. Video captures the moment the Boeing 767 aircraft operated by Cargo Airline, 21 Air, Touchdown in Miami. Looks like we have an aircraft overran the runway. And then just moments later crashed, trapping some inside their cars, and then ultimately coming to arrest on its belly

in a nearby field 1,300 feet from the runway. The NTSB saying the plane first hit a van owned by an airline cleaning company with seven people inside and then a passenger vehicle driving nearby. This video capturing the moment police come across a survivor in an overturned vehicle. It's like a huge erratto, like an explosion. Grace Mercado was on the way to her home near the airport and recorded this video moments after the crash. What's going through your mind? that I am extremely lucky, that that wasn't me because it could have been me, and that life is precious. 21 Air says it's cooperating with the NTSB and that its deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

The investigation, now focusing in part on if the pilot should have performed what's known as a go-around, abandoning the initial landing approach because the plane was coming in too fast, traveling nearly 130 miles per hour as it exited the runway, according to flight radar 24. We do have information on speed, and we want to confirm that data with the flight data recorders. Both pilots, the only two people on board the plane, initially trapped and freed by search and rescue teams, video showing one jumping from the aircraft. A source with knowledge of the matter says each has been released from the hospital. George is joining us now from the scene of that crash in Miami.

And George, investigators expect to have those all-important black boxes in hand tonight, but it's going to take a little time before we know what they learn from it. That's absolutely right, Hallie. And the NTSB chairwoman saying that they are taken to NTSB headquarters in Washington where they're going to be analyzed and more information is expected to be released tomorrow. This, as officials say, they are still dealing with an active cleanup site at the location behind me. Hallie? Still a very busy scene.

George, thank you. To Hawaii now with a hurricane warning. and flood watch across the state as a Category 2 storm barrels toward Kauai. Liz Coyitz is on the ground as the last flights race to get out. Tonight, Hawaii bracing for the wrath of Hurricane Lowell. The storm shifting closer towards the island of Kauai now under a hurricane warning. Officials urging those on the island to hunker down. If you don't have to be on the roads, just be off of the road.

Oh my God, this is going to drown. Oahu already reeling from heavy rainfall over the weekend. Don't even think about coming this way. On the north shore of Oahu, streets submerged. Oh my gosh. Three feet of flash flooding at this farm, destroying crops, after only recently cleaning up from previous storms earlier this year. From above, Noah hurricane hunters flying through the eye of Lowell

as it was several hundred miles away from Hawaii. All is across the Pacific, the Southern California coast battered with monstrous wind. waves by Tropical Storm Marie. The storm prompting life-threatening rip currents and heavy surf. See here, pummeling cars along Pacific Coast Highway. In Long Beach, lifeguards pulling dangerous debris from the ocean. While in Newport Beach, a close call as powerful waves swept away a surfer, a lifeguard quickly coming to his rescue.

Back on the islands, workers trying to clear those roads in Oahu. Along Kauai to the west, residents are stocking up, preparing for the word. preparing for the worst. Pretty much was a madhouse. I mean, customers panicking, about a thousands. Liz has made her way to Kauai where she's joining us now. And Liz, dozens of flights out have already been canceled. Yeah, Halley, that's right. Almost all of the flights, some 50 flights in that of Kauai have now been canceled. I'll say right now there's been a break in the rain, a little break. It's picking up. And the winds right now are very strong with the governor tonight, warning a very high surf here with waves potentially getting as high as 30 feet,

Halley. You can hear those wind gusts too. Liz, thank you. Let's bring in Bill Cairns now. And Bill, they are bracing for what could be a very tough night there in Hawaii, given the track of the storm. Yeah, and this forecast has gotten worse in the last 24 hours. It's going to be a little closer to especially Kauai and Oahu.

So right now it's Category 2. It's moving quickly. In nine hours, the worst of it is going to be right where Liz is located there in Kauai. So you can see that forecast path. It will go by tonight during the old. overnight hours, that's when all the damage will be occurring from the wind and the heavy rain. And this rainfall is the biggest problem, up to 16 inches as possible on Kauai. The peaks there are about 5,000 feet, so we will have problems with flooding and mudslides and landslides.

The highest winds, no problem here from Oahu Southwards, but when we get to Kauai, that's where we could have some wind gust gusts, gusting up to possibly 90 miles per hour, and that will cause some damage later on tonight. Bill Karens, thank you. A record-breaking unofficial end of summer tonight. to Labor Day travel and the price people are paying to head home after this long holiday weekend. Our Tom Costello is joining us now. And Tom, it's not just busy out there. It is expensive. Yeah, it's a record. $750 right now is the domestic airline average for Labor Day. That's a record. And the airlines say they've got record numbers of travelers this weekend.

Today, about 2.7 million people passing through TSA checkpoints flying back home. While at the pump, AAA is reporting Americans are paying more than any previous Labor Day weekend. Gas now averaging $4.15 a gallon, nearly a dollar more than a year ago. By the way, just before the start of the war with Iran in February, gas was just below $3 a gallon. And NBC News analysis finds the typical American has spent about $278 more on gas since the beginning of the war. By the way, on Friday, I mistakenly said that that was per month. No, that's wrong. $278 in total since the start of the war, Halley. Okay, Tom Costello, thank you very much.

To a new message now tonight from Ohio's Democratic candidate for governor after someone lunged at her during a campaign stopped Sunday, hurting two other people. Maggie Vespoor reports. Tonight, witnesses say this is the suspect appearing handcuffed with weapons next to him after authorities say he lunged at Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton. I am a fierce warrior in this fight. Now, Acton speaking out about the incident, which happened when she was campaigning at a fair Sunday. Yes, we had a rough day yesterday.

I'm so thankful to our first responders and our state highway patrol. Authorities say it began when 38-year-old Patrick Havas started shoving his way through the crowd. He was holding his cell phone, started barreling to. Former Congressman John Bocherry was there and says Acton's Highway. Patrol's security detail stopped Havas before he reached her. You said he appeared to be holding up his phone? Yeah, he was holding the phone and he was yelling out, Dr. Acton, I have questions, I have questions, and just kind of rushing towards her. He says the suspect knocked over two senior citizens. Photos show Acton a physician rendering aid. Authorities say Havas was legally carrying two handguns,

brass knuckles and a taser, but never took the weapons out during the incident. Acton's Republican opponent Vivek Ramoswamy calling it unacceptable. Writing candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence. It comes amid recent political violence, including three assassination attempts against President Trump. In Ohio, authorities caution, Havas' motive remains unclear. Records show he's a licensed nurse and registered Republican, who is now being held on one

count of disorderly conduct and two counts of assault. Hallie. Maggie Vespah, thank you. Overseas now, where the war between Russia and Ukraine is becoming increasingly deadly, despite the new diplomatic push from President Trump tonight. Richard Engel is on the ground in Ukraine. There's no let up tonight in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine firing a drone at an apartment building,

killing a Russian civilian, according to the region's governor, and Russia launching an airstrike. Officials say killing two Ukrainians. It follows a weekend of shuttle diploma. with Trump's envoys Steve Whitkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and then Ukrainian president, Volodomir Zelensky, in Kiev. You were involved in the Gaza negotiations, but Gaza remains a wasteland. There's been real, no progress there. Iran, you were involved in those negotiations. The war is still going on.

You've been involved in several rounds of negotiations in this conflict. It's only getting more intense. So you're relaunching negotiations now. What's the likelihood they will succeed when other negotiations you've been involved in have not? These are some of the hardest conflicts. And so the tone of your question was a little bit like, why haven't you done every single impossible thing possible? We are very honored to be able to have the opportunity to work on these under President Trump's leadership. And we're very committed to giving it everything we can. And I think President Trump has a track record of doing impossible things. During the diplomatic visit, a very limited ceasefire was in effect.

Now it is clearly over. Once again, here in Kiev, we've been hearing the air raid sirens, and many people in this city are once again spending the night in the subways. Hallie. Richard Engel in Kiev, thank you. That's of those miraculous rescues in Nepal, 10 days after the deadly flood disaster. And rare access on the ground where stunning videos showed a wall of water wiping out a border checkpoint.

Janice Mackey Freyer, one of the first journalists on the ground there tonight. This astonishing video captured when the massive wave hit, showing how little time people had as the wall of water struck at over 40 miles per hour. And tonight, this is all that's left of that five-story building on Tibet's border with Nepal. Where I am is where the border building used to be. And just over there was where the CCTV camera was that caught the first images of what happened. The Chinese government bringing international journalists here for the first time to see the Tibet side of the deadly destruction. Now just a barren field of mud and debris. The flood came down this river valley, this massive wall of ice and mud, crashing into the building that was here.

You can see the metal sticking out of the ground and barrel down into Nepal. Chinese rescue teams scour the ruins for hundreds of people still missing, including, 18 Americans. From here, you can look down into Nepal and see the path that this enormous surge of water took through the mountains. In Nepal, new signs of hope. A 64-year-old woman incredibly pulled out alive. She survived 10 days in an air pocket under her collapsed home. And another worker was pulled from a tunnel at a hydropower plant. The third in as many days, though 900 are still believed to be missing. China's government is being criticized by some families of the missing for being reluctant to share information.

Chinese officials saying they're being timely and transparent. This rescue specialist telling us their teams will keep digging for survivors until China's government tells them to stop. NBC News senior Hollywood reporter Rebecca Keegan was there. We who were attending this screening, were not told what it was going to be. The film includes intimate scenes featuring Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, purportedly shot before the mother of two reported to prison in May 23. Holmes was convicted of fraud for her time as the CEO of the blood testing startup, Theranos. Anybody who doubts my company, doubts me. While Holmes has been the subject of a Hulu series, books, and podcasts, this is the first

time she's given anyone this kind of access. He moves in with Holmes and her partner and their two children for this 34-day period. and is documenting everything from them walking on the beach together, holding sense, to them sort of plotting a Serenose 2.0. What is Elizabeth Holmes' goal? That's what, one of the mysteries of the films is, why is she doing this? These senses that she believes people don't really understand her, and she feels that by giving this exposure, they will understand her more.

NBC News has yet to hear back from Holmes. The nearly three-hour documentary is out in October. Aaron McLaughlin, NBC News. Overseas tonight, King Charles, speaking out for the first time on Prince Harry and Megan's return to the UK. Kierre Simmons is at Buckingham Palace for us, and Kier, the Kings being pretty clear about their royal roles or really their lack thereof. That's right, Holly. The letter from a senior Buckingham Palace official on behalf of the king makes clear that Harry and Megan are still private citizens, not working royals, and they should not be called their royal highness.

It comes after they came back to the UK last month. Their children are now at school here. But Hallie, no matter their role or their title, they inevitably will be getting a lot of attention. Hallie? Back now with a deadly avalanche slamming ruff. Killing 11 people. Video here, look, shows it's sweeping down a massive mountain. You can see that snow and ice surging across the range. Several other people were hurt, and six more people are still missing tonight. And look at the flames and smoke ripping through this ski resort in Chile, the mountains and ski lifts just off in the background there. The hotel at the resort says it moved everyone to safety as firefighters tried to put this fire out. When we come back, Texas forever, the touchdown one teen and one town,

will never forget. Finally, there is good news tonight about the return of high school football. And for one Texas freshman, the catch of a lifetime. Under the Friday night lights, a high school freshman living every football kid's dream. That's 14-year-old James Melton, scoring on his team's brand new field in their first game of the season. My first touchdown in high school is just overwhelming. For James, it all once seemed impossible. Born with a rare condition, he had his leg amputated at 22 months old. Just four months later, he was walking on a prosthetic and he hasn't stopped moving since. Soccer, track, basketball, and now varsity football. Oh, yeah!

It's so exciting to see him as a father and see what the adversity this child's gone through. His dad, Herbert, with an up close view right on the sidelines, working the chain gang Friday night. One thing that you can't coach that James has, and that's the heart drive and continuously being better. James says his team's reaction when he tumbled across the goal line, unforgettable. Right as I got up, my whole team was running at me and just slapping my helmet. And for other kids facing their own challenges? Never give up and always keep pushing. And then?
