in the northeast corner of this donjon. You realize the most short, geographically weighs to the southwest corner where the evil creature of some sort is were blocked by one or two frog hemits and you managed to sneak across the halls that they were beginning to occupy and you're now in a room

where there's a crypt something in the crypt appears to be trying to cast modify memory on the party and currently there is a spell giving that every minute or so.

Brian and Chris both failed saving throws against it, but Chris managed to sort of get his wits about him and begin singing a song that will allow folks to now roll advantage against this saving throw. And we are now at the top

starting with Chris getting across. I believe we were going to have you roll to Dimension Door onto the little bit of roots they're in this blocked off doorway everyone is trying to get to that they're sort of

above churning river of sludge. Copy that. So what would this be acrobatics? I will let you choose either acrobatics or athletics, yeah. I'm guessing because you led with acrobatics,

you love your acrobatics. I have a plus six on. acrobatics as a put yeah athletics would be a plus three go for it great and then ooh natural 20 plus 6 26 thank God nice so you you bamps right

up against it and that's going to be and this is part of our head you roll initiative your action um oh sorry it right no no no it's okay we grabbed it like the exact same time your token at the exact same time so that is uh yeah right where you can be do you have anything for like a bonus action you'd like to do

to start the other thing you talked about wanting to do chopping at the roots um as a bonus action what's that's a great question uh yeah because you know like this is something i i forgot how and when it's useful and bald of yeah the misty step i can use you know what i can use you know what i can use you uses I make a bonus action. So for damage. Yeah, roll damage against it. Because this thing's got AC and hit points. A total of nine. Okay. So you start slats. It is slashing damage, right? Or is it piercing? It's piercing.

Okay. It's a little tougher then, but yes. You do some points of damage against it. Sweet. Now, because it's a crit, do I get to double anything? Yeah, double the dice damage. Double the dice damage, yes. So it would be 18. Okay. Great. That definitely helps.

Oh, wait, no, I'm wrong. Yeah, yeah. It would be 5, double 10. It'd be 14, by mistake. Sorry. Okay. Still, yes, it does help. But basically I'm communicating that the root-sort resistance against piercing damage. So you caught my drift.

Next will be the environment. I'm going to do some mysterious rolling. Oh. What was that? That was the environment. Okay. Brian, you are not muted. It's not me.

Dan? That is, I don't think true because it's an inanimate object, but I'm checking. Never mind.

That's a, uh, I'm checking. I'm checking. Five, five things. Five things of damage. Ooh. Oh, thing. Five damage units. Unacceptable.

Unacceptable. According to the Dungeon Master's Guide, you cannot use a sneak attack damage from inanimate objects. So excited. It says a creature you hit. Got it. It's the difference. Blaine, so what was the damage before that? Oh, there's just five points.

It's 106. This is slashing damage you hack at the... the vines with, and now it's going to be little peepers. He is going to roll a stealth check. So you notice he tries to sneakily

levitate down the cliff and levitate back up the root system where you guys are. Levitate, nice. And yeah, he's utterly silent. He rolls a 24 and just sort of

He's going to start chopping as well. He has short sword and short sword mastery as well. But he's actually going to miss. Right in front of them for God's sake. Well, you know, a miss is relative. When you don't meet something's armor class, you can also think of it as like, glancing blow or, you know, like a bad angle it hits. It doesn't do damage.

So he's just going to clang off the root system and he's going to grumble under his breath. I don't think he has a bonus action attack. So, no, he has two weapon fighting. It's just a dagger, so it's not going to do very much if it hits. Yeah, the dagger does hit, but this is going to be half damage. Boop, boop, okay.

So, five points piercing damage. All right, that's his turn. Nice. And Fisherson is going. Then, can we tell at what point we might be able to move forward as we create this damage? You know what I mean? If we're,

am I explaining myself? When we're through? Or at least getting further in, because it occurs to me at some point we're going to stack up. As we all time. Yeah, it can fit four people. Got it. And that's why I'm having the caster of the Kuwaitoa do a firebolt.

Nice. As opposed to like hopping over there. And I'm having the non-caster glug to do a bone whip from across the expanse. But it's going to be a miss with the bone whip. Let's never mess with cool whip. and a miss with the firebolt. So they're both just going to against it.

And that will bring us to the next person in the turn order. Brian. What do you like to do? Um. In life. Oh. Um, make people happy.

Oh. I know you'll make some people happy if you try to get some sort of attack into these roots. Yeah. with roots, bloody roots. So it's across an expanse, Brian. You can occupy the last of four spots on the roots.

It would require either a teleporting or a jump or a climbing, a sort of thing. The climbing would be very difficult. The jump you could manage, but you would have to roll not to twist an ankle. Or you could do an arranged attack. Oh, I'm in a firebolt then in that. case. Okay. Roll to firebolt,

please. 13 probably doesn't hit. No, that's going to just sort of biff off of the surface. So I get two shots, I forget.

I don't believe you do, unfortunately. Well, that's it. Oaky-doch. I'll have you walk up to the edge, so you're kind of close. Token-wise,

Ken, you're up. I'm going to move up a bit and cast a sorcerer's burst. acid at it. Let me look that up.

Because now I want to see if I get to be a mean dungeon master about this. But do you know if the top of your head how it works? Yeah, it's a cast sorceress energy and one creature or object within range. Make a range spell attack against the target. I hear bursts and I think splash damage, but I am frank. So you're fine. It says one target. So you're absolutely in the clear.

yeah I ain't silly so I would cast it it's a 2D8 damage you never start to sneeze and yawn instead it's very confusing and it hurts what was the hit

it does I rolled it 27 to hit oh yes so you knew you hit and my damage will be 15 Crazes What about you John and your jaw pops? It sucks.

I try to do jaw stretches literally so that doesn't happen. But I also got a mouth guard. If you guys got some of your jaw will pop and then an earbigger will pop out of your ear. What? You ever had that? Nobody has sneezed and whistled up my eye. That's a savory shit. I popped my jaw before.

and then had something go boop right out of my ear. You never even think of your eye. Something landed a spatoon? I forgot what we were doing. Oh, yeah. God damn, I just yawned and shit myself. Oops. They come out in your ear?

I hope so. I just washed my pants. I was describing kids. It's ruined my headphones. Shit my headphones. The narrative spice that I am here to provide is that, yes, it doesn't destroy all the roots, but this is going to do a huge crack. And now you guys can see through to the next room where you've been before.

But it's like a hand-sized opening. There's a lot of scorched and burned and slashed roots around it. Let's all shrink ourselves, guys. You're making progress. I mean, again, there are spells like Dimension Door that I think that would allow you to actually get through now. Sure. Passive Insights says I can tell you

I think that's all I got Yeah, back to the top order with Chris I'm consolidating the fish folk into one move Copy copy, copy Yeah, then Am I Can I use a ranged attack Or is it, am I still in melee with the thing?

Maybe I'll try and press myself against the wall or low so as to help make a good target for people who are at range.

Oh. If you beat a 20, you can roll an insight or nature check your choice. That leaves me out. Insight or jank boat insight. 19 plus 6, 25. Damn. Didn't Brian get over 22? Yeah, he got 28.

Roll that inside, Brian. Roll that nickname, I'm sorry. Roll insight? Yeah, boss. Or nature, your choice. I think your insight's higher, though. 19. Nice.

Yeah, you guys are going to know not exactly what it is, but it looks like it might have semi-sentience or like a fungal nature to it. Are these more shambling mounds

that we fought before? Is this sort of the beginning? They're not giving you shambling mound vibes, but they are giving you shambling mound threat level vibes. Threat level, shambling mound. All right. I'm shambling, shambling, shambling, shambling, shambling.

And then we're in the next police squad. Then when you say we see them bubbling up, there's, I feel like, sort of sludge behind us and in front of us. Where do we see the bubbling? Behind you, it's in the river. I will ping it. So moving forward is not moving into the bubbling. Correct.

It's happening sort of semi behind you. And, yeah, like, I'll try and re-describe it a little more dryly because sometimes I describe things just emotionally. But you, some of you look into the, the sludge and see this three foot wide, almost lily pad like flat round surface, rise to the surface and bobbed for a second, the sludge kind of rolls off of it and creates a surface that's about three foot in diameter. And then you see three more kind of in the sequence.

It's helping us cross. How nice. I will kind of drawn a series of pangs but they're, you know, like about equidistant behind the three folk who are right up

against the root wall. Yeah, man, let's get the fuck out of here. Blaine you're up? I put my fruit root wall. I'm going to D. You're up. I'm going to try to slash it that, like you said, that

hand-sized hole. I'm going to try to keep hacking our way through there. Great. And I'm going to hack with why don't they just make the whole blah, blah, the plus. Good bets, good bits.

We'll all stay wait. Glug is really sucking, but yeah, both of these are a miss. And up next in the turn order is Brian. Again? All right Am I close to the thing? You were doing a range of attack last time Yeah, but has it gotten any closer?

You're not you're not You haven't been attacking anything moving The things that rose up out of the sludge Just rose up out of the sludge And are you know Doing so in a way that there might be in motion But it's not clear The root system everyone's been focusing on and attacking is, you know, like stationary routes.

So they're just like a wall trying to smash there. I will try a firebolt again. Great. Go for it. Oh, critical plus 7.27. Hey, there it is. All right. Roll your firebolt damage.

I like sound of it. It's not showing me what I hit. Is it showing you? Showing me. You're going to go look in the game long. It is showing me. You did a shitload of damage, my friend. Jesus Christ.

How would you like to see this fire destroy the root system all? 26 damage. I know. That's bonkers. The roots start screaming and it goes, We actually have feelings. Oh, no. This whole time.

Yeah. Oh, cute little roots. Oh, that's the whole description. Great. Yeah. So, uh, yeah. As they burn, they scream. Oh, God.

I can feel all of this. When you said the roots, the roots start screaming, I was like, oh, are you going to do a bit where they're like screaming the lyrics to what they do or step into the realm? Um, but no. I, yeah, the, the wall is now blown open. and you guys see I'm going to try to just

scoot some tokens so I don't break anybody's token action when I erase these lines I drew but you can see through to the other side and get through to the other side Brian are you going to try

to jump across or like get through ASAP now? Yeah sure Okay. So if that's going to be a jaunt... Oh, you stealth. Yeah, I will. I'll try to do it as stealthy as I can. Okay.

So I'll actually back you up just a little bit so you feel like you have a choice before you commit to the stealth. Yeah. You can roll a stealth check to make it as chill as possible, but then you would roll a deck sturdy saving throw with disadvantage because you're trying to be like flying through the air and then landing.

softly. Or I'll just do an athletics. Then you can, yeah, just do an athletics check instead. You know, my acrobatics are higher than my athletics.

I've seen it. I will allow it. I will allow it. But you watch yourself, McCoy. Go backflip. Or a twirl. It's not showing. I think it's low, though.

Uh, yeah, you, you, uh, manage to brace yourself, although you do, you know, land a little farther back. I, I scoot people's tokens, but you're going to be like ankle deep in the sludge right about there. You didn't fall in, but you slid in and you're in, you know, you're, you're, you're close to one of the fungal lily pad setter. three feet wide on the surface of the sludge. Okay.

Ken, you're up. There's an opening. I will fly on through. Um, dun, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do. I really should be a song title, but I can't think of it. I am the lizard king. Oh, cuckoo.

The tattered remains of some shambling mound plant monsters that you guys ripped through. the most noticeable thing is it looks like the sludge levels are higher so some of them are bobbing in the sludge whereas before they were on the bank of the sludge. Oh dear. Yikes.

But yeah, you think the sludge levels got higher in general. Can I get an insight check from you? You certainly can. And Dan, I was just looking at fly. He's got a 60 feet. So. Oh, you can be way in the room, buddy. He doesn't have to. Yeah, thanks for. Yeah, I'll go ahead. I'll go into here. Inside. Yeah. This is about the rising sludge.

That is a 25. Oh, hell yeah. Here comes the narrative. So, yeah, like, this happened right around the, you know, the time you guys killed that guy who shambled towards you and exploded into a bunch of worms. Right. And it seems deliberate.

Not a lot of time has really passed in game since you did that. And you know what you're doing is like you've got some loot. You did the big heist loot part and now you're kind of just trying to kill the source of evil down here. This has been the source of that poisonous or not, it's like corrosive. It's bad. It's toxic. but it's not acid acid. It's been leaking up into the bay.

It's been creating the fog that has rolled over Delsmith. This stuff. This stuff. And the levels are rising. And that might make you think with that high of an insight check, like somebody knows you're here. And they have hit the either like big button to make the levels go high or the big button to do something else with the sludge,

like specifically when it goes high. I pass this along to my Like to have a secondary thing happen Because the sludge is it something's up Guys when the sludge goes high We go The mouth goes shut I was going Michelle Obama with that one

Yeah Oh So it sounds Let everyone know So from what Danda said, it sounds as though, it basically, this is, we've already set off the alarm. Yeah. So there's no being, there's no damage to us being coy in terms of, if we want to go kill this lady, we got to go kill this lady. Coy, no, but if you're being stealthy in this room, there are things that are bobbing up in the sludge that you might, uh, right.

Right. Do you have any coy? I meant more about in terms of like where we go from here. It seems like, oh, we need to make a B. line to the, you know, this, whatever. Yeah. So considering our safety and so on. But like, sounds like we got to go kill her now.

Yeah. Does that sound right to everybody? Yes. Again, really would love to leave here with some treasure. So maybe on the way out, yeah, swing by the tomb again just to grab some good. Let's just see. Let's just see.
