(5:25) We also touch on Jalen's first impressions of being under center behind Jason (9:50), the backstory to the squat video everyone can’t stop talking about (12:20), why he hopes Jason keeps playing for at least a few more years (23:02), and his surprising reaction to hearing his name called by the Eagles on Draft Night (26:00). Starting point is 00:00:00 He has a very unique way of snapping the ball. He, I mean, it's a very nice way of saying every quarterback that I've ever played with, hate silence. Hey, it's a good to you quick. Fast. It's up on you. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls from all over, welcome back to new heights. A juke's original show presented by Wave Sports Entertainment.
Starting point is 00:00:24 This is a show that is putting together an MVP like season. Most valuable podcast. Ooh, that's a pretty good one right there. We are your host, I'm Travis Kelsey. We got new episodes coming to get every single Wednesday,
Starting point is 00:00:49 but this episode is special. Jason, you wanna tell them why it's special? Yeah, well, we're sitting here in the Philadelphia Eagles training facility because we're gonna have our first ever sit down guest. We are pleased to interview this week, quarterback number one, and my number one teammate, Mr. Jalen Hertz,
Starting point is 00:01:11 from Philadelphia Eagles. You're gonna have a lot of teammates that just not heard on that. But it's not a bad number one teammate to have. Great guy man. Well, before we get to that, how does it feel to be in a different teams, training for those, to fill it up for Eagles? I'm not gonna lie, man, I feel like I in a different teams train episodes filled up for you?
Starting point is 00:01:25 I'm not gonna lie man. I feel like I'm a spy right now. Did you tell the chiefs you were coming here? No, I didn't They didn't give you any No secret cameras to take pictures of our plays I feel like I'm a master disguise right now a little James Bond action Are you James Bond action. Then a then a are you James Bond or Inspector Gadget or James Bond was way more of a flanger. You've never been here though.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Been here once. Been here once. I got interviewed by Chip Kelly. Chip Kelly interview. Yeah, the other 13 coming out. Yeah, I got interviewed by coach Chip Kelly and Ted Williams, as well as Justin Peel. Justin Peel. Yeah, obviously I botched that.
Starting point is 00:02:15 I don't know what I did, but I just nailed it. Which means I botched it, but it's cool, man. It's cool. And to be honest, being here, kind of weird. It's a weird feeling. What? Ah, it's just enemy territory, man. Just, I feel like I'm on the other side of the fence. Is there anybody here that I'm trying to be friendly
Starting point is 00:02:40 with everyone? Like I'd adapt up a few people in the hallway that I knew. Who'd you tap up? Big Dom. Big Dom. Big Dom. Dom knows you and big Dom did connect you. I felt guilty.
Starting point is 00:02:51 I felt guilty. Dom is always cool. I've been with with Dom because it's just like, man, he's the best man. He's, I mean, he can't beat him. Best person in the building. Yeah. And to be that cool with Dom and to not play here
Starting point is 00:03:03 kind of feels weird, but he's a man. Would you agree in my opinion that the Eagles cafeteria might be the best cafeteria in the NFL? I'll tell you what, you guys got some good pizza. Yes, I'm good pizza. There's a mother good stuff up there too. Cold brew wasn't as cold as I thought it was gonna be, but it's two o'clock in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:03:24 There's an ice machine, You can put ice on it. Oh Or they could just put ice in it and keep it chilled. Well then the waters are down. I don't know how coffee shops do it But it was way colder at a coffee shop than it was in there because they put ice in it. All right, and that's shout out to all the cafeteria workers side. Yeah, I still enjoyed the coffee. Thank you. So how do you think our first interview went? How do you think our interview went with Mr. Hertz? I think it's gonna keep us at number one, man. It's gonna keep us at the top of the charts.
Starting point is 00:03:52 That guy that we just interviewed was one of the most interesting human beings. And to hear his motivation in life, how he attacks, you know, being a professional football at that, the number one position in professional football. You could tell that guy. It's he he he lives breeze each sleeps football and and cares about The outcome of every single game that he has man, and it's you could tell why such a good teammate man Why everybody loves him no doubt very thought. I mean dude everything he every question he answers
Starting point is 00:04:25 There's a there's like a thought process behind it. He's not just gonna See you any smart dude, man. Dude. Yeah, he's doubted. Yeah, what about you Jason? Would you would you would you get away from it? I really enjoyed it. I think there's things that we talked about in that podcast where I've been jailing this teammate for like three years now and You know you learn something new about your teammate, right? You connect with them a little bit more. And I think that it's awesome. I hope that we keep interviewing teammates to be honest with you.
Starting point is 00:04:53 Cool trend for me, you know what I'm in. Well, we'll get to a chief's player maybe one day. If I have the courage to ask anyone. You just don't have any friends, I guess. Just FYI, we taped this during Travis's biweek, which is why he was able to come out here. So, thank you for telling everybody that. And I'm just, I'm not going to give it to school here.
Starting point is 00:05:12 In case anything's a little bit dated, this was because that happened about two weeks ago. Alrighty. Here's our conversation with Jalen Hertz. Enjoy. It is my pleasure to welcome our first guest, starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Number one,
Starting point is 00:05:32 Town of the number one who squats as much as me and has the game day fits to match my brother Travis. Woo! My boyfriend. The ever talented Mr. Jalen Hertz. Jalen, thank you for joining us. Woo! That'd be him, right? Got the man to myth the legend and the building doc.
Starting point is 00:05:49 And this is not a, this is not an interview. I don't think we're professional enough to even conduct an interview. So this is just banter between us having a fun time. Yeah. But I'm not going to lie, just I got to ask you one thing. It's what everybody wants to know, man. I gotta ask you one thing. It's what everybody wants to know, man.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Fourth quarter. Game is on the line. Third down, you throw a slant-to-skinny batman. He catches it, comes up short. You're looking over at Cereani, Cereani's looking at the radio guy. Something's wrong with the radio. You don't know what's going on with the radio.
Starting point is 00:06:23 He's looking at you. You got it, Jalen! You got it! No time out. It was to with the radio. You don't know what's going on with the radio. He's looking at you. You got it, Jaylin! You got it! No time out. What's the down to distance? Fourth and one. Fourth and one? What are you dialing up?
Starting point is 00:06:33 92% of the time. Woo! Let's go! Oh! 92% of the time? 92%. No, that's a real number. No, probably not, but.
Starting point is 00:06:43 You're right, it's down to get. It's just like 100%. Every single time but you're right. It's not a good sound. It's like 100%. Every single time you got through it. It's not a good one. You got to, uh, I'm talking about, maybe. We do a really good job of doing that for whatever reason. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:06:56 Well, you guys got the horses up front, man. We got some dudes up front. We got some guys up front. The horses up front, we got horses in the back. Pushing and pulling in there, what, man? You already know. Let's, pulling in here, man. You already know. Let's get to this guy, man. What were your first impressions of Jason Kelsey
Starting point is 00:07:10 when you just started becoming an eagle? Yeah, so when I became an eagle, this is my favorite part. He had the hair. He had all the vibes going, I heard all the great things about Jason and I got to see it first and I'm saying I think seeing them from the side, watching him play, watching them leave, how you handle themself.
Starting point is 00:07:32 It's like, okay, but then I saw he embraced, he embraced how he embraced me, you know I'm saying because he come up, I'm doing the scout team my first year, you know, learning as a young quarterback and he's like number one hype man on the field, like a practice and he's snapping me to balls, you know, doing whatever, and he's, you know. The oldest guy in the room. Yeah, the oldest guy in the room, but he like had the best energy, you know, I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:07:56 Got to bring the juice back. He had the best energy, you know, so then I got the opportunity to play with him, and I don't know, it's crazy. It's different, yeah, different dude. What did you what did you think when he when he came into the building with blonde hair? I know I know I I really know what that was about to be honest. I Know it does about this were two exact hers right with me and Zach Hertz Hertz he was upset that they hadn't traded him yet
Starting point is 00:08:22 I don't know why I was like oh if you, have you still in the roster of week one? I'll dye my hair blonde to match yours. Cause he had just died his, cause I thought for sure they were gonna trade him. Yeah. Yeah. Turns out he was still there. So I ended up having a little bit of a...
Starting point is 00:08:36 What does it take to get it back? Or is there's just some old... Cause I asked him, I asked him, maybe like a week ago or so. I was like, do you miss your hair? And he's like, uh, yeah, whenever it's short, I want it to be long. Whenever I'm pretty much I just hate the way I live. Yeah. So I wanted to be the long or should get to a minute. You must have done.
Starting point is 00:08:56 I did actually have a few minutes. A room. Yeah. Yeah. Actually, you're your second year in the league. You had a pretty good handlebar going. Oh, the handlebar. Yeah. That was aggressive. Oh, no, you probably shouldn't bring that one back. That was like a walrus, man. I can do it. That was every time you eat that thing's getting in your
Starting point is 00:09:13 I'm probably not getting away from the beard anytime soon. I ain't got to y'all point yet. I'm kind of It's still growing in. I ain't going to lie to you. It's been time like I'll be saving trying to get it. Get it to grow it. It's not ready yet that it's not ready. It's not ready. It's not time. I came for it. It was a lot. How's it long? You've ever been without like shaving it like I have like on the side of hats is like little it's not it's just not there. Yeah. But if you you got to give it a solid like two months to really see if it's there. I mean, I did for for account, but it was
Starting point is 00:09:43 kind of like it wasn't there. It wasn't. No, it's not there. It's not there. Meet the stand. So, uh, you make fun of me right here. What? What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:09:52 How you know it's coming? You made fun of yourself by doing this shit. Don't put it on me. Jason, I had a bad snap and gave you a forced fumble, man. He put it on you last week, dog. First of all, have you ever had that happen? Have you ever had that happen? I don't. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Have you ever had that happen where you're in shock and in a center thinks you're under center? No, no, that was what happened. I don't think that's what happened. Not last week. Well, you just we're on the same side. I was it. All right.
Starting point is 00:10:20 But I snapped a one. He wasn't calling for the ball. I was I was already. I knew he was with hate so I was a little bit faster. It's up on you. Hey, you know, Ryan, the same guy. People always ask me why, um, you know, why is your stance all over?
Starting point is 00:10:38 I'm like, I'm not going to be a little bit more aggressive. I'm not going to be a little bit more aggressive. I'm not going to be a little bit more aggressive. I'm not going to be a little bit more aggressive. I'm not going to be a little bit more you. Hey, you know, Ryan, the same right here. People always ask me why, you know, why is your stance old, I'm like, I gotta be in an athletic position. They won sports to catch the ball when it's coming, you know, but. Oh, yeah. I mean, because I remember my rookie when I came in, like I come in, I have a couple
Starting point is 00:11:00 of plays here and out throughout the game. And it's like a couple of, like I'll do that. Maybe a handful. It's like, I'm going there and foam with a snack, because I just wasn't ready like I wasn't in the position. You know what I'm saying? Some of them were bad snaps. But, uh, well, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:16 I ain't chubbing, buddy. He make all, he do it thing. And you know what I'm saying? He do it thing, ain't chubbing. I mean, really, I snap it fast. And I snap it fast, because I want it fast because I want my hand back. Yeah, I got stuff to do. You got to use this.
Starting point is 00:11:31 It's not 1940 where you can't use those hands. You can use that all so bad. Yeah, my advantage of my skill set is quickness, right? So I want to get up on the guy quick. I want to be able to get into proper leverage because I'm not going to out muscle nobody. So, I wanna be able to get in the proper leverage because I'm not gonna have muscle nobody. So, just that fast. All right, I have no complaint.
Starting point is 00:11:52 Because the plus side is, you got more time to make it decision if it's in the right spot. Well, I try, like I said, I try to put myself like, if I have to squatter a little lower, to catch it, to get to them right there. It's the other thing. He always ask me like, I was that snap. Or if something, if there's like an enemy in the backfield or something like that,
Starting point is 00:12:11 he's like kind of like, I know he's thinking about it. If he snapped the good, and I'm like, hey, you good baby. I'm gonna be baby. You know, I'll be looking at it right away. So I figured out what happened. Yeah. Well, first of all, everybody knows you're a squat machine.
Starting point is 00:12:24 It's because it's a workout warrior, man. So they just don't let that one Yeah. Well, first of all, everybody knows you're a squat machine. It's got to work out warrior, man. So they just don't let that one go? No, they don't. I mean, it's unheard of. I don't know if you knew this. Not a recorded back squat. It just happened accidentally to be honest. Accidentally.
Starting point is 00:12:38 Yeah, just finding out that I was strong like that. But there's videos on them. I know, but I'm just saying like the whole, you know, lifting in college, like I do that just to see if I could do it. I put my teammates. But in high school, my dad made my brother proud of. When I said I learned everything from my brother
Starting point is 00:12:55 and I watched him, he went through the coach's kid cycle first. Sure. My dad, my brother had the power to. Now he did it, ran track, played baseball. But I mean, he wasn't, he wasn't winning the meets. So he just did it to get strong. That's why dad put us in there, coach dad. Go to dad.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Go to dad. So, do you call your dad coach? Somebody said that. No, I don't. Okay, I'll remember. I will be on coach dad. That's another comfortable. Okay, let's say that right after.
Starting point is 00:13:21 But yeah, so my boss put me in, Paul Lethy said, you know you can have the power this high top. Tog just like me. You know you can have the power. All right. Well, I had track meets, I had track, I run track meets. I threw this shot put too. I don't know if you knew that.
Starting point is 00:13:37 I did not know that. Through the shot put. Stay champion. Went to reason. I went to regionals. I don't remember the numbers. I don't remember the numbers. I don't remember the numbers. So you were running Anto and Shopwood?
Starting point is 00:13:48 Yeah. I don't know. 4x4, 2x2, how many? There ain't nobody doing that. Yeah. You used to do it, that's right. That's right. That's why I did it, though, for real.
Starting point is 00:13:57 But yeah, so my dad made me power lift, because my brother did it. Well, everything your brother's going to do. You're going to do. So I ended up doing it, and got to one of the meats and like 405 was on the bar. And it's kinda like I just, like I always had strength as a kid,
Starting point is 00:14:12 but it's like it came out of nowhere so at this meat, I had 405 on, I got this suit on long hair going, wrap my knees up, pops rassomonees up like right after and you know, his thing was compete, you know what I'm saying? So he screamed compete thing was compete. You know what I'm saying? So he screamed compete. So like, you know what I'm saying? I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I a bar on it like slap his face ten times. Scream at the top of his lungs and then get
Starting point is 00:14:46 under the rack and do this like shuffle with his feet. You see, see, see, see, see, see, see. Getting excited. And then when he did it, he would take this big, you got to get in case corn. You got to, you got to do on the valve salvo maneuver on the on the Risking flexing out every single time now probably played the you never flexed out So I never got to that point, but I never I can believe it I can believe
Starting point is 00:15:19 But I never got to that point though. I never got to the point like when When I when I start putting my weight on, it's like, okay. So, but I put the 405 on that day. And I'm like, I literally go to my pub, like daddy. You could throw some more on that. Oh, that's kind of easy. Like, I'm like, I say, what's in these wraps? What's the state record, that?
Starting point is 00:15:41 So, end up doing that. And you have, maybe I had like 45 meets throughout the year. I'm doing baseball, track during all this. So this was just kind of a side thing. So I probably lived one time during the week just to try and see what it was. But we just end up getting to the point like, it was, I think I did it in my sophomore year
Starting point is 00:16:04 and my junior year, that's when I did it. It was like 500 was on the bar. I'm like, well 500, that's a lot. I'm like 16, I'm like 16, you know what I'm saying? 15 is 16 and it was just crazy. We just kind of just kind of realized, I can do that. So when you talking about the screaming and stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:22 So that didn't come until like, I was really like, okay, I was testing like limits of doing because to be honest, the only reason why I was, I did it cause my past made me do it, but then I kinda embraced it and I was like, well, I know another quarterbacks, you know, in the country doing what I'm doing right now. And, you know, so I embraced it on that side then.
Starting point is 00:16:43 I'll tell you what, I was watching the Minnesota game live. Yeah. And the touchdown runs that you did have, you were running through shit. I'm just saying, man. You ain't squawing that much though now. You could. I could.
Starting point is 00:16:56 I don't do that. I don't know. He's still competing though. He's got the base level strength now. Yeah. Recently, we were smiling at each other first. I'm telling you, that guy's a weird going on. There's something about Squaw and the racks We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it.
Starting point is 00:17:06 We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it.
Starting point is 00:17:14 We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it.
Starting point is 00:17:22 We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. We're gonna be able to do it. He was quiet another day and you know, I like the fuck with him a little bit. I like the fuck of joy and to sometimes, you know, I'll be looking to the right. I'll be like, I'm like, hey, kind of the same shit on the board. I'll be like, what's up?
Starting point is 00:17:47 You guys protecting me or I'm protecting you. Let's go on. It's gonna be funny, but I feel like I have to get a good squat throughout the week just to keep everything engaged. Reflushing, like flush out. So you ready for the week? Just mentally just like feeling like you. No, I can do it too.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Yeah, yeah, a little work. 100%. Well, we'll get back to Jalen in one second, but last piece of new news. Travis officially November. And do you know what that means? If you had one meal that you could cook for the PFF number one offensive line in the national football league, what meal are you putting together? I'm a burner with some profit.
Starting point is 00:19:24 So profit. I'll take them down to with some crawfish. So crawfish? No, I already know. Take them down to Jason. Do you even eat crawfish? I'm have head crawfish. I don't think I've ever had any of your crawfish. Yeah, you made them before too. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I came up here one day and made it
Starting point is 00:19:36 in the spring out there. Everybody was going, but, uh, yes, it's really dealing. You serving it up in the bag? Not in the bag. See, people, that's the New Orleans style. That name, New Orleans style. It's real dealing you serving it up in the back. Not in the bad. See people what's the North like that name? No, no, I'm starting to that's the new age. All right. You know, whatever,
Starting point is 00:19:52 but get you get you a little pie. You got you got to make sure that clean. I'm not going to give all my serious away with the seasons and all that. But if you got a clean, you good. And people don't realize with crawfish like you know You seen the first come like shrimp gumbo shrimp Alfredo shrimp pasta shrimp. Yeah, like Crawfish You can do the same thing you can put crawfish and anything, you know, it's in the same family of shrimp Right. Yeah, it's all the same. Yeah, so I you know, I have a clean seasoning right you won't be disappointed
Starting point is 00:20:23 All right, you won't we have to try that out. I got you All right now Maybe discuss we know you can cook for the team, but maybe discuss some some team gifts in terms of like The best sifts that that you've that you've gotten throughout the years. You talking about like around the holidays? Oh, yeah. I was thinking like, I'm gonna tell you something funny. And I really thought about this. I thought about this like my first year starting last year too.
Starting point is 00:20:54 Okay. Can't go big first year. When Christmas comes around, it's like, well, you know, what do I want to get my whole line, man? My guys, especially my whole line, I think they're the most important guys to me on the field because they make it all happen. 100% Some cash get their guys golf carts, Rolexes, John Deers, all this crazy stuff, full-by-fours,
Starting point is 00:21:18 all that. And I'm like, my first year. Can't go too big big then you just gotta keep I'm like the cheapest dude on the field you know, I'm saying like I can't I can't do all that So I got them some so and you know try to keep a fresh with the feet still got them. Yeah, so which model which George you get them I got them some ones. I want you. I had leather ones. Those were random black ones. Yeah. I think I got them nose and the cool grace. The gray ones. Yeah. What? You have a fresh pair of cool grace. And then I got to speak his language.
Starting point is 00:21:58 The gray ones. The gray ones. I got gray ones are red and black Good line man, you gotta you got to you got to the line of the one not even playing I showed to his game Yeah, and I wore the red and black ones, okay What's everyone those would call right? Yeah, that was a playoff game Up there. Yeah, yeah, okay, okay and everybody for some reason And all of his boys. Oh, yeah, everybody in this out. Everyone in the world. We had a lot of our snitches. Our snitches were analogous.
Starting point is 00:22:30 And then, said the entertainer came in, they said, I don't know. But they weren't the real ones. And everybody was clouted. And everybody was clouted. And that's it. Yeah, that's it.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Yeah, like the flying in days on, bro. It was, it was interesting. I was like, man, I'm usually on the other side of it That was definitely a moment of what it was It was definitely a moment of what it was. That's too funny man. Yeah, shout out to Harry for having a bread one night and Jason Just randomly showing up at bread once Is going that's too funny man. I mean ask you if you want to. All right, yeah, last. You know, Jason's flirted around with retirement. I personally know he's probably gonna play another three years. Um, he hasn't told anybody.
Starting point is 00:23:12 I just got a feeling those legs are gonna keep working. Uh, if you were to pitch him on why he should not retire. Hmm. I need it. We might need you to. I had to think about that because in the past, I've kept it because it's been two times. Yeah. Publicly.
Starting point is 00:23:32 So, publicly. Publicly. It's been since 2016, but yeah, keep going. Yeah, so it's been, it's been to, for me, it's been like every since I've been here, my third year, and it's like, okay, what, is he gonna come back? I'm like well? I don't really know what I'm getting myself into. I don't know what this is gonna look like, but I hope this guy's back
Starting point is 00:23:54 I hope he's back. So then last year, you know, we you know, we losing a playoffs and it's like I Think I think I think Jason understands that we could be really good next year. So I'm like, I really, I never questioned it. I never questioned it, right? Never questioned it last year. I think I was closer to retiring. The first time. The first time.
Starting point is 00:24:17 Yeah. You're a rookie here. Yeah. Because that was a terrible year. Yeah. But, yeah, I did feel really good after the end of the issue. Yeah. It didn't feel good after the playoff game, but I was like, hey, I did feel really good after the end of the issue. Yeah. I didn't feel good after the playoff game, but I was like, hey, I think we got starting or something that can be really good. Yeah. So I, I, I, I, I personally, I've never said this, but I feel like,
Starting point is 00:24:34 you know, I genuinely felt like the connection we had, like I feel like, I feel like he believed in me, you know, I'm saying, and I feel like, um, I feel like he, he wanted to be a part of this. He's been a part of so many great quarterbacks. I'm saying that play with so many different types of quarterbacks in this place right here. And I felt like I really felt like genuinely. He wanted to see what this was. You know, with that.
Starting point is 00:24:58 Yeah. Well, you guys are making the most of it. Yeah. It's been cool. It's been so long. It's fun to watch, man. That says a lot coming from you for for a guy like him to be thinking about, you know, what's next and to see something in the moment
Starting point is 00:25:14 and want to come back for it man. And then on top of that, taking advantage of it. You guys are on a roll. You guys are fun to watch man. Yeah, hopefully three more. Anyways, let's go back to you. Three more. You're a rookie year. Let's rewind to that. Look, I accidentally danced it. Bro, how long have you had grays? Like, when these grays start coming in?
Starting point is 00:25:34 He's like, I've had, this point he wants more than the coming in. I just want to be all white. Just that old Jimmy Johnson look. It gets you a lot of them. It hasn't been done yet on the football field. The all white, the Santa Claus look under a helmet. Man, I don't know if I've seen that.
Starting point is 00:25:47 That's... I ain't gonna be Santa Claus. You should probably just do it. Do it, why not? Let's go triple platinum. Just snow. Super platinum. Let's go back to your work here.
Starting point is 00:25:59 What was draft night like? What did you think when you were drafted by the field of youth? I was like, man. Really, I was like, so when they caught me, I got the 2 on 5. It was how we gave me a call. Ironically, we played Pittsburgh this week. We played Minnesota We played a lot of teams that Vegas last year like I thought I would be at one of those places
Starting point is 00:26:31 Sure, I know Pittsburgh had and maybe the 48 pick or 40 something coming up at the first peak They had their first peak was in the second round got it and I thought I was going to Pittsburgh So when I saw PA I'm like This is Pittsburgh But they just picked so I don't know what I didn't know it's a spit So when they said the Philadelphia Eagles I I was like was Philadelphia spot where you like that might be I had no idea I will come here. I had no idea No, I did this will be this is gonna this is gonna be a big this is the conversation. I never really talked about it
Starting point is 00:27:06 But I had no idea nothing through like the combine or anything like that. No no real like interviews with him I had an interview with him. I had an interview with them at the draft like an official interview Yeah From the interview I didn't think you know, I didn't think I didn't think I was going to be an equal. Man, I got a similar one with that. I feel like we kinda, I don't know, it was definitely, I think, a surprise for most of Philadelphia, but there was like rumors circulating. But there were rumors circulating there. There were people in the building that liked you.
Starting point is 00:27:39 Like, I knew that going into the draft, and I didn't know what was going to happen. I didn't know. It's just something that wasn't just something that I didn't know what was going to happen. I didn't know. Yeah. This is just something. I had no idea, you know what I'm saying? And when my number got called, I was just like, let's go. Who was your draft? My drafts, man. I thought I was going to be the first tight end taken off the board, ended up being the fifth.
Starting point is 00:27:58 Going into the second day, so the second and third rounds, I thought that the Jets were sold on me. I had a great interview with Rex Ryan. And Rex Ryan actually tells this, told me the story last year. He said it was a, it was between you and Gina. Gina Smith. And he's like, he's, he's taking my job on multiple case because I used to be a high school quarterback went to a camp at West Virginia. Do you know Smith? Oh, do you know Smith? We're at the same draft class.
Starting point is 00:28:29 They're in the same camp. Same camp. I went up there thinking I was going to show Rich Rod. His golden arm. And yeah, he asked me if I was willing to switch positions and then gave Gino Smith the scholarship. And then fast forward to 2013 draft, he's coming out of West Virginia as the top quarterback
Starting point is 00:28:49 and Rex Ryan's in New York trying to figure out whether or not, you know what direction he's going with the QB and he's like, if Geno's available, we're gonna take him and they ended up taking Geno. Thank good. The first pick in the second round. He was the first or second pick in the second round. Okay.
Starting point is 00:29:05 He was the first or second pick in the second round. And I'm not going to lie, man. Thank goodness. Because Andy Reed, I had no idea I was even on his board. It's a very similar thing to you. I had a quick, like, a 15 minute interview at the combine with him. And I honestly, I walked out of that room, like, they're not going to pick me. They just did that because I'm Jason's little brother.
Starting point is 00:29:24 And Andy Reed had just picked him. So I'm like, in room like they're not gonna pick me. They just did that because I'm Jason's little brother and Andy Rita just picked him. So I'm like in my head, I was like, they were just, and they're, we barely even talked football. We were just in there talking about stories about Jason or things that happened in college, like non-football related.
Starting point is 00:29:36 So I walked out of that meeting like, well, I'm not going to Kansas City. So when I got the call, Missouri is at the time, Kansas City, St. Louis. And Jeff Fisher was at in St. Louis and it was meme central over there for Jeff Fisher. He was getting tore up left and right. We had just had two guys get drafted to St. Louis,
Starting point is 00:29:55 didn't work out for him. And in my head, I see the Missouri number. I'm just like, fuck! Oh, I wanna answer this. I looked at my agent like, should I answer? And he's like, just answer it. So I answer it and it's Andy Reed. I'm like, Hey, go to Reed!
Starting point is 00:30:14 I'm doing my bid. Are you kidding me? Yeah, you asked me, real simple, straight to the point, are you gonna fuck this up, man? And I was like, huh? What? Yeah. Are you gonna screw this up?
Starting point is 00:30:29 If I take you with our next picker, you're gonna screw this up. And I was like, no, no, not. I'm gonna be the best tight end. Not even thinking of, you know what I could possibly be. Just be like, in my mind, I'm gonna react right now with the most positive answer ever. I'm gonna be the best tight end you've ever coached.
Starting point is 00:30:44 I'm gonna do everything by the book. I all that party stuff in the college is out. It's not that guy anymore. I'm a party. He's just like, all right, hand the phone to your brother. What? Jason, you want something to do? You want to meet a voucher for him?
Starting point is 00:31:01 I ended up at the J. I don't know what he, I don't know what he. My Jeff, your brother right now, is you can screw this up? I was like, no sir. I knew it taking me. Yeah, but yeah, no, Gina Smith took my job twice, man Yeah, but yeah, no, Gina Smith took my job twice, man. Try not to Gina, man, hopefully it doesn't get us on this day. Do you have any welcome to the NFL moments? Like for me, one of the craziest moments I remember when I was young, was like blocking these guys that I like watched my whole life growing up.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Like Ray Lewis, yeah, Lundyling Fletcher, Vince Willfork. I'm like, yeah, that's crazy. I think he playing with DJI, that was pretty cool. Yeah. The legendary DJI. The energy, bro, like it's crazy. First ball you threw to DJI, was it underthrounger? Did you just know? So it was, it was kind of like a pat and go a little situation. I was trying to see you know
Starting point is 00:32:08 Because Mike Vic always told me like hey Throw it further than you think yeah, you know, he's gonna go get it. He rolling He rolling and I'm excited to see what he do what he does in Baltimore Oh, he has he got speed like you think No, it's it's like it's everlasting. That's what it's it's the craziest thing ever watching him trackable track it That's insane. I've never seen I mean, it's like like Willie Mays The best center field or ever to play, but he play I think he plays centerfield. Yeah, yeah, you see it. He got it Yeah, he got it. That's what separates like there's been fast guys in the league. I don't think I've ever seen somebody try
Starting point is 00:32:49 Yeah, we had a deep bar versus the cowboys my rookie year. Yeah, and I like Rolling he's a jack man. It would for me. It's the stride while he's looking up Yeah, that's what gets it. No, that's what gets you. It's like effortless. It's just effortless. It's like he's not even like trying to run and he's just running fast and everybody. It feels impressive.
Starting point is 00:33:11 I heard through a few folks over there in Baltimore they still got it. Yeah, I can imagine. He's still flying around. I don't think you knew that speed like that. I'm sure he's holding up and ain't nothing good. Oh yeah, that's it. That's it.
Starting point is 00:33:21 That's it. He's in the hands, strings up. DeJack, let's go, baby. What meant more, the first start you had against the Saints or when you went in in Green Bay at the end of the game? Well, it's crazy though. I don't, it'd be so much going on. I forgot, kind of, don't even think about that.
Starting point is 00:33:38 So playing the first in Green Bay. Yeah. Yeah. I remember that like, we just, I think it's like the same time I big went in in his game or something like that right But um, that was crazy meeting in Rogers. I'm saying I think that was yeah, I mean, that's yeah That was crazy. Yeah, I'm like I'm about to come back and get him but right now
Starting point is 00:33:55 I was a little short, but uh, we caught our size on they caught it back Yeah, I'm saying missed up the momentum, but that was that was kind of crazy moment I mean, I think to answer your question. I think, Tassie, a question I think, I think getting the win was, you know, the better one. Yeah, I think that was better. That was a huge one too, because it's the same for good that year. That really good. They went to the vision over something like that and, um, nobody, nobody expected, you know, the hers kids to do anything.
Starting point is 00:34:21 So first thing I get was so first I always find in your first start to what rush for a hundred yards and What I was I did just run for a hundred something No, I'm in throw touch my pass. Yeah, yeah, I mean It was good. Yeah people you know, it's funny when people had these expectations about certain things and you got there You see them baby like you know, it's the best man. You go do you you know It's always fun. It's been one of my favorite coaches ever. Carrie Combs, don't worry about going out there being great.
Starting point is 00:34:51 Just be yourself and yourself will always be good enough. Yeah. He used to scream that in the lottery. Yeah, man, they hit a little every single time. That's the true. Because you build up all these emotions to go out there because you only got one game, you know what I mean? Or this game to go out there and prove yourself got one game, you know, me or this game to go out there and
Starting point is 00:35:05 prove yourself for, you know, me and play your best and you can build up so much emotion to try and do something more than what,. Yeah, I dream that shit all the time Yeah, me a 260 pound man out running the corners and the safeties probably not gonna happen Yeah, but if you get a good no blocks shit, you take it to the house I think we talk about this all the time I see him run with miles. Like neck and neck. Like, try running away from the bed. Keep up with him. I'm like, what?
Starting point is 00:35:51 Try throwing a punch at him and running away from that. Fuck. Yeah, we talked about it. We talked about it all the time though with the, you know, you can't, yeah, like you said, like, expectations, whatever's happening, like you can't let none of that dictate anything. You get drafted, you know, you get drafted here.
Starting point is 00:36:08 None of that. But at the end of the day, all the matters is how you approach how you practice, how you work. Like, that's all the matter. Like, people get so bogged down with stuff that either one, they can't control or two, don't matter. Right? And I think we do a good job trying to keep focus now. Yeah, I think I think I think you hit the nail on the head, you know, I personally try
Starting point is 00:36:33 not to ever get too high and never get too low. And just keep the main thing the main thing, you know, you talk about that draft night or he can't do this, he can't do that. Like, I'm not going to listen to you. You say the good things, know the bad things about me, because it's irrelevant. You know, I'm saying it's all about the things that I can control.
Starting point is 00:36:52 And it's always been that way since I was a kid, you know, I'm saying it. I know it makes my pops up my all, because, you know, I got something up for you too, but I know it makes my pops up my all when I'm sitting here, I'm saying all these grown ass men I'm talking to you keep the main thing the main thing I'm saying control what you can blah blah blah these little snippets of me trying to get these guys to you know be ready and be focusing it's all stuff that I was raised raised
Starting point is 00:37:17 on the race to do you know I'm saying like I was prepared for it I was built for it you know so yeah everybody gonna have an opinion, but everybody's gonna have opinions on the positive bank, you know. Let them know. Let them know. Speaking about quarterbacks, what is your philosophy on quarterback? Because saving, I always say, like, dominate your box. Like, this is a little different from what you have, you know, you dominate your box. You make the right call, get everybody a French situated. Yeah. Make sure you got everything going to receive it, knowing the routes, knowing the heights, knowing the adjustments, you know, coaches, preparing the
Starting point is 00:37:52 different looks you may see trying to be best prepared, having the team best prepared. But I feel like when you're the quarterback, you know, it's a, it's a different responsibility. And it's very unique because you it's a big, it's a big box because you It's a big box because you test all of it. You test about every play. You know, I'm saying them no doubt We'll test it by every place. So in the end there's gonna be something Quarterback always get saw the love and they always get all of that you're too much love and they get too much hate You know, that's how that's those saying you know, I think it's accurate for the most part. Yeah, but I mean Yeah, I mean the love is is warranted the hate The hate I don't think is warranted usually, but I mean,
Starting point is 00:38:27 there's no other position in football that the team is so ingrained on success. Right. Oh, 100%. You know, you directly impact every single player on the offense. Mm-hmm. And that's just the way he goes. And the coaches.
Starting point is 00:38:40 Yeah. And everything, like, everything comes through your head. It's true. The team is crazy. It's crazy, because I couldn't imagine like not being quarterback like an imagine not being have you ever not played quarterback? I have but it's like once I start playing quarterback. It's like well I get it's just they had control. I get the test of volume and play I played one you know
Starting point is 00:39:00 I played one year receiver in high school not even a year play like a couple games of it And they they moved me because we didn't really throw the ball He's just out there blocking for the jet spring Play receivers terrible you got to wait you got like it's like oh, I can be wide open No matter if they're not throwing the ball to you like it's nice to have that control It's nice. I'm just saying you know I just had kind of a little reflection, like little several reflections in that little, because it's like, do you think, do you think receivers
Starting point is 00:39:31 are quarterbacks at heart that just don't play quarter-biddle? Yeah. 1,000% I am. What? Well, prime example. I can answer that question. Yes. I do. I actually think of the game as a quarterback still. Yeah. And as if I have the ball in every single play. And that's valuable though.
Starting point is 00:39:51 That's valuable. I feel like it definitely 1,000% helped me transition into the room. And then I feel like I shouldn't be playing quarterback because in terms of the instincts, I wasn't doing the work in the meetings, I wasn't doing the work off the field to have good instincts on the field. So I had all the confidence in the world to do whatever I wanted to, but I didn't have any logic behind. I was just out there just doing sporadic shit.
Starting point is 00:40:24 Like it was a third and five and I knew, you know, it was man coverage across the board. I'm checking, you know, paint hot, paint hot. You be drawn to the right. It's just like, you know, I know I can get these first. Yeah, I know I can get five yards. But it's like, yo, this isn't that try. This isn't, yo, especially at a freshman in college.
Starting point is 00:40:43 But what it did for me was put me in a guy like your shoes and I was able to see things develop. I was I like I know he's gonna want me to come around this this Hook the curl defender. You know what I mean things like that throughout routes I feel like I was back I'm back there the entire time taking five step drops always looking see what the drops are How much time do I have to run this route? Where am I in the progression, things like that? And that 100% made just understanding the tensions of the play collar,
Starting point is 00:41:12 but understanding how can I make this job on the quarterback that much easier? Yeah, it always helps when you have a frame of reference for that, I feel like. You were the same. Well, I played that. Going from linebackers. I think of for sure, I think about what the defensive players
Starting point is 00:41:28 thinking, I was a linebacker, a linebacker, a linebacker, it was a gap assignment. Yeah. Simple things, right? And I was like, hey, it is a cover now. He should be over here lately. It stays out of town. But I learned so much from.
Starting point is 00:41:40 Yeah, that's what we call three weeks off. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. I was like, we're talking, we're talking about a different language now. learn so much from that we call three weeks or something. Yeah, exactly. Talking we're talking. Check the right. Different language now. We're gonna get it back. So yeah, I never top it up with you in person. Never in my first time in you, you know, and I have a lot of respect for your quarterback, your coach, but your quarterback.
Starting point is 00:42:00 And tell me about him like, well, what makes some him. You know what I'm saying? He'd love it. Because I'm mad, I know Pat, you know what I'm saying? But just your perspective, I had the opportunity to work out with him going into my second year. Oh yeah. I mean, I would say very similar in terms of the motivation that he has to be the best person he can be, like you've been saying.
Starting point is 00:42:23 But he's an ultimate competitor. You know, just a guy that it doesn't matter if you're playing cards, it doesn't matter if you're playing, you know, I mean pickleball in the backyard. Whatever it is golf, it doesn't matter what it is. He's competing and he's trying to be the best him at everything. It's just it's a natural instinct for him to just flip the switch and just become the best at what it is And if he's not the best over the course of the game over the course of that day or over the course of him practicing He's gonna find a niche, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:42:54 He's gonna do as much as he can mentally to gain as much knowledge about something and Or use his knowledge from another, you know sport or altercation or situation or situation. Exactly. Exactly. And adapted or put it into the situation in a hand. So he's beating you at all that? Well, you know, I got that same.
Starting point is 00:43:13 I got that same juice. Who's winning the pickleball? Who's winning the pickleball? It's actually, it's probably even fight. Even fight? Yeah. He's got me on the ping pong table. But pickleball.
Starting point is 00:43:22 What else did you mention? You said pickleball ping pong with a team. Golf? Golf? Yeah, it still haven't beat him in golf he takes they I will say that he takes that way more serious than me I'm out there for just you know in the therapeutic like oh this is a bit of a drink of yours and I have a drink in my head is lovely he just cruise around on this mobile this automobile and then release all my frustrations out on the golf ball. Hitters, hard as I can.
Starting point is 00:43:47 So you said you like you respect obviously past game. We talked about Aaron Rogers, Duprees. Who's on your like my rush more quarterbacks? I think, um, I think the first guy comes to my mind is, is Brady? Yeah, it's hard to say. It's hard. I can't argue with the right for the soul. You know, I'm saying he's done it for a long time and I mean he's done it for a long time That's uncommon, you know, and he's got seven of them thing. Yeah, he's got more than anybody else ever
Starting point is 00:44:15 Right, I mean like the kids up I only went someplace else and got another one. Yeah, I mean First time first year just had to fucking see Yeah, I mean first time first year just had to fucking First year, so he's clearly old blows, man. He's on it. Um, you know, I think Tough after that. I Think he's in the leaves. Oh, I think I think um, I think you talk about Mike Vick Yeah, revolutionized the game experience man like human highlight real. Yeah, I was like a experienced man. Like, human highlight reel. Yeah, he's different.
Starting point is 00:44:46 He's different. You had the Mike Vicks? I had the Mike Vicks. I had the Eagles Jersey. I had the Falcon Jersey. The Falcon's a Black Bunker. Yeah. Re-buck.
Starting point is 00:44:54 I think everybody had that one growing up. Re-buck. I think everybody had that one growing up. Yeah. I actually thought I was a white Mike Vick. I thought I was like, there was a lot of that work. Look, did you know there is no one like that? There was a lot of that work.
Starting point is 00:45:09 It was a daddy. Maddie, Maddie came out one year. I think it was the first series with the Eagles. Maddie came out and it was like a light skin version of a big on there. We just talked about like that. But then I was like, we just talked about like, you're welcome to the NFL moment.
Starting point is 00:45:21 That was like, even bigger than Ray Lewis was like snapping the bottom Michael Vitt. Yeah, for sure. Crazy. No question about it. I still remember the walk that we were in and they like, Kels going there and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:45:34 bruh, and how do we make a big right now? That's Mike. Yeah. Like that's how it started. I mean, he was a star. I had taught, give me like an in person in personation. And you'll kill sleep. I don't know if I can kill sleep. Real talkable.
Starting point is 00:45:46 Very soft smoke, but confident, obviously. And I just remember Fisher, the first time I ever snapped the ball to him. Anyways. So we got Vic Brady. I like it. I like Brady. I can't go too far down the line.
Starting point is 00:46:03 I don't know. You talking about like, you know, like a past? Yeah, I feel like the games evolve so much. I mean, it's like, I talk about Michael Jordan. I never watch Michael Jordan play. You know what I'm saying? But I can't just see him say like a Joe Montana or, I never really just watch it.
Starting point is 00:46:21 I'm a person he said, I like round the kind of hand too. Yeah, nice. Different, like different. It's the side one right there. I can't say that. He could throw the ball. To throw the ball. Crazy.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Use electric to watch it. Yeah, very electric. So I like him and Mike, time, underrated right here. When I was a kid like Cam Newton Okay, I'm a ham Newton cam the one and only cam and then I don't know is that why you wearing them on? No, it's not But why do you wear number one? So when I'm with Oklahoma CD lamb one number two? Okay, so because I was one of the two at Bama and I wear number two because of my brother
Starting point is 00:47:06 So I go to OU CD He's a T2 so you can like keep that's your number, you know, I'm saying you you been here bothering I'm one number one. I put that one on I was like I want number one you look good. Oh, you look good. You look good. So I look about 30. I kept it on, you know, saying yeah, but I like cam and then Man in Houston Houston legend Houston, they the bench young Well, the second quarterback I snapped the ball to go in crazy. Yeah, no Good, my first quarterback room my big amovent young Bro, good. That was my first quarterback room.
Starting point is 00:47:42 Michael Big Amvantio. VLIVE, you met Vince? Yeah, I have. He was so nice. One of the best dudes out there. We all can say it. Country boy. Country.
Starting point is 00:47:53 Yeah, my dude. I, he was, he played a little bit. My work year, because Mike got hurt a little bit. And talk about like making you feel like you were playing back yard. All just with your boys. That was Vince's like magic. So you throw a pick, you gotta say, hey, Mike, we'll give him next time.
Starting point is 00:48:09 He's like, oh, I'm gonna give a fuck about that. I'm gonna give him a chance. So I'm really like, I'm like, all right. I'm trying to cheer you up, but it seems like you're on your good bye. No, I think I put those guys, I know it's five, but those are people that I look back and I'm like, yeah, I really like, I watch them. I'm saying like, oh, I love Peyton.
Starting point is 00:48:31 The sheriff? Yeah, I was, I didn't know if you purposely just didn't want. You're like a Tennessee guy. I have a very special relationship with the men. Really? Yeah, like, that would come about? Came about with the, it was organic, it was natural throughout the many passionate Academy. You know how the cops caught up at the house. Man, I wish I were a baby. So dope man. I was cool as I always dreamt it would be. Look, it was cool for me.
Starting point is 00:48:59 I get the crawfish and all these. But, but, uh, yeah, meeting them and, you know, it's kind of like they kind of took me in. You know, like my first year I went out there, uh, build a relationship with him, uh, Peyton and Eli. But the one I kind of hit home with was, was, was artsy to dad. Yeah. I don't just kind of happen. I was old, you know,
Starting point is 00:49:25 and always, always get a text from from Peyton all the time. Cooper, he's hilarious. You know Cooper. I do not know Cooper. So, I mean, I know who he is. Cooper is, Cooper is, like, he's all funny now. He's different, like, brother is hilarious. He's like the class clown.
Starting point is 00:49:44 Okay. And supposedly he was the most talented hilarious. He's like the class clown. Okay. And supposedly he was the most talented one. Like he was the guy. But the youngest usually are, right? So, but me and Archie talking to Archie, he takes me all the time. That's awesome. Everybody saw the time, paid as well.
Starting point is 00:50:00 That's special to me, you know what I'm saying? Cause as a kid, like, this paid many, you know what I'm saying so man. I would be a fool to not have him on that list Are you familiar with David Cuckliffe? He was their quarterback coach in college. Mm-hmm both of them Oh, I do that Duke he was at Duke he was at Duke when I was when I was in college and for the past few years I think I don't think he's there anymore, but I But I was lucky enough to go to a Tennessee recruiting camp. And here I am, he was back when Coach Fulmer was the head coach of Tennessee. And I meet the one and only David Cuckliffe.
Starting point is 00:50:35 And I knew about him because of the patent in Eli's situation. And for whatever reason, we hit it off, man. He was kind of in my hip pocket talking to me about ball here and there and just shows kind of talent was at this Tennessee camp, but he was working with me a lot and I left that camp and with a t-shirt, a recruiting t-shirt, man, I wore that shirt every day of my life.
Starting point is 00:50:59 I'm like, man, I can be the next paid man. And never got a call back, but what I did, what I met him, we played Duke, my senior year college in the belt bowl story before. And he was the head coach and he came up to me and remembered me from the camp. And I was like, dog, there's no way. He was like, yeah, yeah, I was telling him to go ahead and grab you. I was like, dog, there's no way. I was like, yeah, yeah, I was telling them to go ahead and grab you.
Starting point is 00:51:26 I was like, get out of town. Ain't it funny how once you've made it? Everybody was telling them the grab. Bro, I just told like three stories. Like, Rex Ryan, we wanted you. You remember Chung? Remember Eugene? So Eugene Chung was the assistant online coach and I'm coming back to Philadelphia after
Starting point is 00:51:46 love you, Chung. And I'll never get after, I was a six-round pick, right? And Chung, after my rookie year, whatever, and like, stock was going up and everything, he's like, he's like, yeah, man, I'll show you. I'll tell you, I had you ready to go in higher. And then when he came back, he showed me a picture of like his, look like his notes from the draft. And he said, had me listed as like a second or third, I'll tell you I had you ready to go on hire and then when he came back he showed me a picture of like his look like his notes from the draft And he said had me listed as like a second or third up. I'm like chump Nobody had me the second
Starting point is 00:52:12 I Know you just wrote that down into a picture of it right now So you talked about I guess you've talked to Mike. Yeah. Have you talked to any other Eagles quarterbacks? I've talked to all of them. All of them. I'm not going to say all of them. Like, Donovan. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:32 I've talked to the ones that you would expect to. Yeah, yeah. Donovan Randall. Randall and Mike. But the relationship with Josh McCown, I know he was here for a little bit. I heard it was a super a little bit. I used to push Berk. Yeah. Who burns who? I heard it was a super avally crazy.
Starting point is 00:52:48 Yeah. I mean, I'm going to play receiver for a little bit. I think it was, it's crazy. It came, right? Yeah. It's crazy. I had special teams. Yeah, he did.
Starting point is 00:52:56 Yeah, he did. Yeah. Talking to them. What advice do they give you? I mean, it seems like, I don't know. I guess it's, I don't know. You can say it's flattering or whatever, but, you know, people just always tell me like, I don't know, I guess it's, I don't know, you can say it's flattering or whatever, but you know, people just always tell me,
Starting point is 00:53:07 like, just be you. They didn't know me, you know what I'm saying? But, I like, you know, just be you. You know what I'm saying? This is a unique place, a very special city. And, you know, you just be the person you are and everything gonna be all right in there. You know, that's the words I got from Mike Randall.
Starting point is 00:53:29 I mean, you know, five, so even Josh, you know, I met him. He came out for OTAs for a little bit. He's just telling me, like, man, just state a course. You know, I see the visitors. Just state a course that I all be special in there. It's very, I think it's very cool to get that, from people that have been in your shoes.
Starting point is 00:53:50 Oh, yeah. You know what I'm saying? Because you think about giving recruiters to go play for a college. Or I know me being a ballboy as a kid, seeing a high school quarterback, or whatever, whoever my dad was coaching, like getting taught to him,
Starting point is 00:54:03 getting advice from him, and having him as a sword, I can kind of lean on, like, that goes a very long way. And you don't always get that NFL level. I learn that, you don't always get that in the professional level. Not from a down your team, that's played for your team. There's a lot of personal dynamics at the NFL level
Starting point is 00:54:19 and it's more of a business. So that factors in, hopefully not on good teams, good teams hopefully have less of that, but you're gonna deal with some level. Yeah, for me, I was able to meet Jeff Saturday coming out. Yeah. Well, after my first year. Was that like your comparison?
Starting point is 00:54:35 For sure. Like an undersized center athletic. Under Howard Mudd. And Howard Mudd was my offensive line coach. She coached Jeff at Indy with Peyton Manning and all of them. Yeah. So he was a, you should go meet Jeff in the off season so I was able to go out to his place in Indianapolis.
Starting point is 00:54:50 You're a third in MVP conversation right now? Yeah, what's your mindset on that? I feel like it's not a, it's a situation I kind of feel like I've been in before with the high-ism in college and all of that. I mean, you know, one thing that I've tried to do, sincerely do a better job of, is just handling everything that comes with the game, you know, and I feel like the best of them, they're able to be consistent, you know, so to be up for something like that, display
Starting point is 00:55:20 some type of consistency and play, I'm just something I just wanna do throughout the whole season. You know what I'm saying? Ultimately, you know what I wanna do. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Send you off with a bang. I'm just gonna take that. But I just wanna win.
Starting point is 00:55:36 You know what I'm saying? Everything else that comes with it, it's gonna come with it. Yeah, it's fun, it's cool. Yeah. I personally feel like too. Like, you know, I've challenged the people around me too. You know how I am. Just like, yeah, it's, it's fun. It's cool. Yeah. I personally feel like too, like, you know, I've challenged the people around me too, you know, how I am just like, yeah, you know, people, you know, you talk about awards, you talk about people praising you and saying what you can't do, blah, blah, blah. Like,
Starting point is 00:55:55 you look at yourself in the mirror and you know, what you're capable of because of the work you put in. And I feel like, you know, there's another level. And I know you probably feel the same way too, because you have these, you know, these experiences, these formative experiences that teach you so much stuff. And you grow from it. And I feel like us as a football team, you personally have the quarterback, I think we have a whole another level to kick into. Right. You can never stop growing. Never stop growing. Nothing's never enough. You know, and that's, that's always my mentality. And I just want to continue to grow, you know, so. Yeah. I ain't anticipating anything other than just attacking
Starting point is 00:56:32 there day and whatever come with it, come with it, you know. Control, would you control after that? I feel you on that. You guys are. So we're gonna switch it up a little bit and talk about us on Thursday night football, man. Are you a fan of the Thursday night games? I like you. You like just playing on Sundays
Starting point is 00:56:46 or do you like the different schedules? Any top footballers on up top then? I enjoy watching the games. As far as planning them, last year I feel like we played in the soil early. I really don't know how, you know, my body responded to it. I would say this though,
Starting point is 00:57:01 when you do watch games, is it like, are you just enjoying games is it like are you just enjoying Guys making plays or are you still in your mind watching it like you would dissect film and like seeing what you fancy I'm calling everything. That's about to happen. I feel like it's natural to do You watch so much tape. I watch so much tape all the time and you see it You know, I'm saying or you can anticipate it like I'm watching the the man in cast and You see it, you know, I'm saying or you can anticipate it like I'm watching the the man he cast and Pedd is from the Chicago Bears
Starting point is 00:57:32 He catches a just weak, but he's running something so little in the game, but Body bar boundary Bob Bob was in the boundary, but Kind of had a little hiccup in his in his stride. I'm like oh, have me Paying man, he says I looks like a hand me there. He like, I'm like, but that's just seeing the game, I'm like, okay, look, that safety's gonna come to the middle of the field and quarterbacks gonna have to hold him to throw the ball outside, blah, blah, blah. And that's exactly what he does.
Starting point is 00:58:00 You hear Roma, he knows everything. Roma talking about it, you know what I'm saying? I think that's fun in the game and watching the game. Yeah, same man, man. Oh, I was on zone. Yep, you know. See a flag, you know, right away holding, just based on what the flag's at.
Starting point is 00:58:16 I think that is fun. I do, it is crazy. Like what do you watch when you, I'm always watching the old line D line for the most part and then the box. And every once in a while, I'll catch myself. I was watching football with my buddy Zach Clarice, he plays quarterback up in Canada.
Starting point is 00:58:33 Zip! And he was like, what are you watching? You mean, I said, I'd just see what just happened the right time. He was like, no, Jason, I'm watching the ball. You know, I realize I'm living in this weird world where I'm watching nothing that's really bad. Everybody else has painted attention to these skill guys
Starting point is 00:58:53 and I'm watching these guys. I don't know, but yeah, what are you, are you looking at the defense quarterback just kind of the whole picture? I'm watching defense and then I'm watching how the quarterback reacts to what I feel. The defense is giving them, you know, and I'm not out down the field, you know, and it's a weird dynamic because like kind of switching it up Kind of but I think like isn't it crazy watching your old school play? Yes, like as a fan. Yes, 100% it's a crazy crazy feeling ever
Starting point is 00:59:21 Like I see why people get emotional. I'm not even in I'm not an emotional person I'm not you know but it's like yeah like it's so simple it's weird being on the other side of that. I hear you you know but yeah I'm watching I'm watching the quarterback and I'm watching how they responded to whatever the defense is showing you know and oftentimes I mean we end up watching Thursday night it's been a few teams that have played that we're going to end up playing at some point. So it's like, okay, kind of checking it out. Yeah, definitely if you're going to play a team, that game I'm watching
Starting point is 00:59:53 it way different than if I'm just watching. Yeah, because I'm like, I'm trying to pick up stuff. Yeah, it's almost got to the point where if I'm not playing the team, I'm probably changing channel. You know, you don't like watching? No, I just enjoy watching it like you were just saying, like anticipating what I'm gonna do against that defense. Yeah. And it's, if I'm, like, I have no reason to watch the Panthers play, I'm not playing them this year. I don't know, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:00:18 I get more excited to watch like a Broncos Chargers game because now every single possession, I can learn something from where I can see, you know, what they're doing, what they're in, you know, and just how everybody's reacting to it. When you're watching a game where you're not about to play the opponent, what are you looking at? The ball.
Starting point is 01:00:36 Yeah. Not like what the tight end or like. If it's a tight end that I'm pumped up about, yeah. I mean, the Ravens played who less, or this past Thursday night, the Ravens time. The books. The books. Already played the books.
Starting point is 01:00:49 I wanted to see what Mark Andrews was gonna do against the Bucks defense. How the Ravens were gonna attack them. How the Bucks were gonna play him and a man. Unfortunately, he got banged up. Isaiah likely came in though and had 70 yards. Bald, 70 yards in a touchdown. Shout out to Isaiah.
Starting point is 01:01:06 I see you. I see you reach a new Heights player. But he, you know, had success versus one of the best defenses in the league. You watching that? I'm watching Linda Bonpankake, Alamback, over is the center for the Bravins. All right, whatever. All right.
Starting point is 01:01:21 So we got the commanders coming up. What is bigger? NFC, NFC East Ravories, all right. So we got the commanders coming up. What is bigger? And NFC East rivalries, college rivalries. You've been a part of some legendary college rivalries too. It's different. It's all different. I think this city makes it different. I think this city makes it different.
Starting point is 01:01:39 I think how they respond to, like if I say, I feel it, let's tap in this Monday night, they, they tap in, they tap in this. I hand on that. You know, I'm saying, like, that's what it is. You know, you go to some college games. Um, and I was actually talking about this recently, like, you know, at Alabama, you know, you oftentimes you start off,
Starting point is 01:02:03 you know, being, I record, I don't like start off, you know, being a record. I don't like to say that they give me a hard time about that. We start off doing a pretty good job, you know, and the stadiums are packed when we play, you know, Chad, the new guy, Chad, the new guy. Louisiana, yeah, Louisiana, yeah, yeah, yeah, uh, uh, Citadel, like a military, we played them. Like the stadiums are never packed. Right.
Starting point is 01:02:31 But that's still a pre-mirror football team. That's about to go play a game. And you know, we, we played this game. We don't take any opponent lightly. Yeah, at all. At all given Sunday. In the given Sunday, you know what I'm saying? I feel like on Sundays, regardless
Starting point is 01:02:45 of the record, regardless of the success of the team, you got to show up to play. Yeah. I'm saying it. I feel like the fans hold up to that because they show up. It's like a party on Sundays, I feel it. Yeah, that's an interesting because we have this debate. What like a couple of weeks ago, that's good. And you've said the same thing because since an adi our biggest rival was like Miami, but we haven't lost a Miami in like 16 years. Robert is not the Rocklesburger. And that's it. So every Sunday, like, don't matter what it is, the worst team in the league, like you
Starting point is 01:03:16 can get chas with. Yeah. And the fans know that so they show up. Yeah. What was a game from college that you remember, the crowd just being hostile? It was just a crazy environment. So I have a few different moments that come into mind.
Starting point is 01:03:34 I have a, people kind of are like, what? When I say this, the loudest state that I've ever been in is we played at Arkansas. Arkansas. I'm in my first meeting. Pigs too. We played at Arkansas. I'm talking about maybe I had like a sinus infection or a sinus was my ears was ringing so hard I'm like that is like the noise. The noise. You know in college you do you know I do the claps sometimes.
Starting point is 01:04:03 Yes. You know, in college, you do, you know, I do the claps sometimes, and I'm like, yes, and stuff. Yep. We did the clapping, that wasn't doing nothing. Good on you, Sam. Yeah, so that was a pretty crazy environment. Another crazy environment was a home game versus Auburn. And my junior year, I wasn't starting. And then I got being done, had to miss a couple of games to do the surgery and stuff like that.
Starting point is 01:04:24 And I ended up coming back. We played Citadel and I come back. I'm still kind of limping around. I go throw a test down. I wipe my ankles off. Encles is banged up, whatever. We played Auburn next week, big time game. Okay.
Starting point is 01:04:37 Home. Yep. The iron bowl and we, like, tour goes crazy. Snaps, goes crazy. Okay. And I get to go in the game. I'm like, let me get a piece of that thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:50 So first play, first play, throw like a little slid route, quick little ball to Jalen Water. Yeah. And that was my first play in my last play in that stadium. Well, that was my first play. But my first play in my last play in that stadium Well, not my first play, but my first my first play in the iron bow that that game in my last play In that stadium ever my last last touchdown in that stadium electric and like a 50 50 yard Touchdown, you know, I'm saying. I'm just kind of soak it in in because you can feel it like you you can feel it. You can feel it fans, you can feel it emotion.
Starting point is 01:05:27 You can feel it. Did that moment, that's a moment. It's, you talked about that, you asked me about those paintings on the wall and my crib, like the painting when I'm like this. That's that moment. Got it. Crazy.
Starting point is 01:05:42 Jumping. Tuscaloosa was jumping. What did it feel like in the moment and I'm here? Did you hear everything happening or everything? Yeah, Jason was saying he's a Jalen and Jalen That was so cool to me, you know, I'm saying. Oh, that was cool. Jason was saying it like he doesn't he really hear Much at all. He's just so locked in on the game. It's kind of just white noise. Yeah. I mean, I feed off of the crowd. Yeah. I might love booze more than I love cheers. Like I love I love a hostile pissed off and grow
Starting point is 01:06:13 environment. And I just I'm fucking I love that shit man. I fucking I'm speaking of booze. what are Philly fans? Yeah, what a different breed. What's up? How would you say your relationship with Philly fans in particular since you got here? I've enjoyed them. I've enjoyed them.
Starting point is 01:06:36 I think I've embraced them. And I feel like I've been prepared. That's why I say it's different. It's a different breed here. It's a different vibe here. For like going to Oklahoma, going to Alabama, seeing passion and fans. And I'm saying, but you come to Philly,
Starting point is 01:06:52 like people, it's a tough place. And it's a grind mentality. You know what I'm saying? And that's something I'm like, okay. I like. It takes a special, well it doesn't, it takes a certain type of person
Starting point is 01:07:06 to be able to play in Philadelphia and to have success. And I think they want that type of person. You know what I mean? And stuff like this. Once they find out you're that guy though, man. Yeah. And that's what I see every time.
Starting point is 01:07:20 I can't wait to see this Sunday, man. That place is about to be rocking. You know what I'm saying. It's lit. It's a special place here. I've been fortunate to, you know, I'm still early in my career, my time plan, but to play for Alabama, Nick Saban, to play for Oklahoma, so much rich history, and then to come to a city like Philly, where the pride is on another level. And that's some history to it too.
Starting point is 01:07:49 The history too. But the history, the pride, the fans, how they love you, how they support you, how they love the game, and how they value us, you know what I'm saying. So there's a different type of appreciation for the fans of Philly and how they love the game because we all want to win. We all want to you know I want to do it. I want to put on a show. You know, I'm saying so I think it's been special so far All right, we've had a lot of debates here. Okay, all right, so we're gonna ask you to settle some of these scores that we've argued about first topic game day fit philosophy Hmm, are you a dress up with that?
Starting point is 01:08:31 I know you already are on this but you would dress up or address down pin on a day Okay, I thought you were gonna go straight dress up. It depends on the day and I think Are you go to the air you going to the plane something smooth? And I think, you go to the plane, something smooth, something something smooth. I feel like smooth, like a, like a, a shoot and die, not smooth. I'm smooth, I'm smooth, something, not even don't have to be streetwear.
Starting point is 01:08:56 You gotta have the drip, right? Drift, but this is what I tell people. You gotta have the leak, this was what I tell people. You gotta have the leak, this was what I tell people. You gotta have the leak, this was what I tell people. The clothes, the clothes I'll never make the man the man made the clothes And that's my mentality when I put anything on like I'm gonna make it go as long as look as long as I got a bar Fritz bar faith
Starting point is 01:09:21 All right what position talks the most trash De line man, I feel like I feel like D line we said DB's He cuts his ear. All right. What position talks the most trash? De-line, I'm in a for-line. De-line. I feel like De-line. We said DBs. DBs and De-line. I feel like.
Starting point is 01:09:32 Yeah. It's definitely one of those two. Yeah. Or defense in general, because I know some lineback in talking to you too. What's the hardest position to play? Quarterback. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:41 Yeah. I think that's fair. That's fair. Certainly factoring in the middle aspect. If you take away the metal aspect is a still quarterback to my life physically, physically, just like do the ball accurately on time. Yeah, let's face right place. Pretty easy ain't it. To listen, Jason's one-starred quarterback. That shouldn't look easy. I promise you that didn't go well Shaker Heights got the best of Jason Council that day
Starting point is 01:10:09 Oh for two Ram for 150 though right now When he tired, but it is you know You know this down much like you did do the translate He just does stuff and I just I'm just like like Kelsey's just funny. He's just doing it different I'm like I'm glad you've seen it We came we came out we came out game one and I was tired as I was The first the first touchdown drive any game in September. It is too hot.
Starting point is 01:10:49 It is too hot. Don't let it be more than 10 plays. I'm fucking calling for at least something in the middle of it. I promise you I can't do hot games. Yeah. Me and AJ said it was the first touchdown drive. Like the first touchdown of the season. It's drooling. Me and AJ. Me and AJ look like. It was the first touchdown dry like the first Test out of the season
Starting point is 01:11:09 AJ I did celebrate I walked right to the sideline Next time you guys see a long drive from the Eagles just watch it much Jason's hand on the hips just that sassy walk back to the sideline man's the best man do you trust pf rankings does your agent paid man I'm gonna keep it to you with some man yeah I've never been ranked high. None of this though. You're ranked high on PFF this year, aren't you? Yeah, this year. Yeah, I mean, I don't, yeah, I mean, I see it's noted. I know it at all.
Starting point is 01:11:59 Okay, I don't waste my energy on it, but it's okay. Yeah, don't come back around. I don't understand what you're saying. I'm not saying no pressure. That's why it's so easy for me to just like... Somebody worried about that. My Maybach game, how about now? Everybody's coming out on the other side, but you know who was there at the beginning
Starting point is 01:12:25 sir Jason Kelsey They won anyone that's right. What's your honest reaction when you when you score a touchdown and it's called back So I had this thing we had like the most I Think we had the most touchdown passes car back last year. It was terrible. We had a weird offensive lineman down field every single snap ever Or we're stepping out of bounds on a go-round. Like, something like that. So I got to the point where I just stopped celebrating. I'm like, is it coming back? And I had to happen this year. So I'm saying we asked that because last game I had a I had a touchdown over the middle caught it. Safety came in. Hit me.
Starting point is 01:13:12 I'm fucking take a hit. Get in the ends on still standing up. The guy that hit me flies five yards after he hits me. I feel like a this is a absolute beast. Just imposed my will on this game. And I look at the stands and I'm like this and everybody in the stands is like, nope, there's a flag right over there. They can't and it's just, yeah, damn it.
