I'm Lauren Lapkus. And this season we have been deeply covering the Batman movie. Oh, so deep. This is the 11th. Problematic even. Oh God. I did a is the 11th. Problematic, even. Oh, God. I did a stand-up show where I brought up Batman and Robin. Oh, no.

I would have nowhere. This is what's wrong with us. It's bad. This is bad. I've made jokes recently about both Batman and Star Wars, and I think I should be arrested. Take her away. This is the 11th episode of our sixth season, and we are working our way through movies within the Batman universe with the help of fellow newcomers, super fans, and sometimes even people who have contributed.

Yeah, it's going to be 13 episodes culminating in a very exciting livestream episode! We'll cover as much as we can to get an overview of the franchise, But guess what? We can't get to every dang thing. We can't. But today we're going to be talking about the Lego Batman movie, which is available with a subscription on Max and Prime Video. Do you like Superman? He seems dumb. He's not dumb. He is the embodiment of all that is good. Excuse me. Except for in the one where he's bad. Where he seems bad. And that's the problem with those movies.

That's the only one we saw. Yeah, that's a bad take on Superman. Did you like Batman v Superman? I did not like Batman v Superman.

Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition? I can't believe I remembered the name. Wow, you remember the whole thing. It's incredible. It's seared in your memory

That's good. It's the sweetest of the Batman movies. It's very cute and sweet and funny. It was. And honestly, it came at the right time because I feel like we could get all the jokes and stuff.

Like, if we had watched it earlier, it probably wouldn't have hit. I knew who Sauron was. I know. I know. They mentioned Zod as well. Yes! I was like,

I know Zod. I know about Zod, I have to say. There's a lot of franchise references, not only Batman. Yeah, there was a lot going on. It's almost all references. Yeah. It's just joke. Joke a second.

We did our homework. We did. So we got to understand things. All right. Well, I'm glad we actually liked something. It's been a while. I think we haven't liked something. Well, we haven't liked the same thing in a very long time.

No, we haven't because I went off the rails with Batman and Robin. Yeah, although we did like Batman Begins. That's our favorite. We did. We love Batman Begins. It's a great one. It's a great one. And I think we feel really like smart because we liked that one.

Yeah, we were like, we really like Christopher Nolan and his world building. And that one was like a deep story with lots of good backstory. A very realistic take on the Batman mythos. Yes. Mythos. That's a good word. Let's incorporate that. Yeah, mythos.

Mythos. People are like, hello. And I'm like, mythos. Might be mythos. But I don't know. It's okay. Nobody likes mythos. A mythos sounds like a Greek island.

And I prefer that. Mykonos and mythos. You just went there. I did. It was nice. Mykonos and Mithos. You just went there. I did. It was nice. Ocean's beautiful. It really was. And not nary a child in sight.

It was an hour 40 minutes and I was like still? We have movie left? It felt like we could shave off 20 and we'd be good I thought kids movie Feels like we can make this a little bit shorter. Did you think it was too long? I didn't think so. Okay. I hear from a question, what would you feel would be like the clippable moments?

You know what? That's what's hard because everything's funny and cute or has a point. So, yeah, it's hard to figure out what to cut. But I was wishing it was shorter. But also when I saw that it was an hour 44, I thought, oh, yay, it's only an hour 44, because everything we watch is really long. So Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition was three hours and two minutes. Yowza.

That was too long. I got to write a letter to Zach. We didn't need the last two. The last two minutes you don't need. Didn't need. Didn't need. Who cares? The dirt rose a little.

I loved this. Wasn't that cute? They had loved this! It was so cute! Like, what are you talking about? I was like, but I hate you. It's like, we're not in a relationship. And I was like, oh, I get it! Yeah, yeah. This is fun!

There was like a curly haired black lady standing next to him. And I was like, is that me? Why did they call me? I like when first of all, I thought the Legos look amazing and the sort of like different types of plastic they're able to create are so cool. And the way that

she like shakes her hair when she gets out and doesn't move. It's like there's so many cute little Lego jokes. I loved it. I love it. I like when he's eating by himself in his like moat. He eats a fully shelled lobster and you hear the crunches. That made me laugh so hard. That's cute. Okay, back to this fucking gala. So he's smitten by Barbara and this distraction results in him unwittingly agreeing to adopt the enthusiastic orphan Dick Grayson played by Michael Cera, which is so funny. It's a really cute character too.

Those big eyes. I had those glasses. Oh, I loved it. Wayne is then infuriated by Barbara's plans to restructure the police to function without the need of Batman. The Joker crashes the party with his villain team. The Joker surrenders himself to the police

while capturing almost all the villains for the police in a fun little box, except for Harley Quinn, which is Jenny Slate. With so many villains incarcerated, Batman becomes desolate as Gotham no longer requires his crime fighting skills. It's really funny, like watching this after being so deeply entrenched in this world, because it is it is basically the same story over and over and over again. Yeah. And I over again, yeah. And I'm like, this is the silly one. There were points where I was just like,

I wish I could be surprised in some way, but I know that I won't be. That is interesting that they keep making the same movie again and being like, you gonna come? For a hundred years. You gonna come? And everyone's happy with it. Everyone's like, okay, I keep coming. Suspecting that the Joker's up to no good.

Oh, how could that be true? Batman plans to steal a Phantom Zone projector belonging to Superman. Channing Tatum. I didn't get that that was Channing Tatum. Oh, I didn't get that either. A device that can banish anyone to the Phantom Zone, which houses some of the most dangerous criminals in the Lego multiverse, only for Alfred, Ralph Fiennes.

recover the projector from the Fortress of Solitude, breaking into in his scheme. and frees him, allowing him to return to Gotham with all the multiverses villains he has recruited in the Phantom Zone. Oh, including Scarecrow. Oh, we forgot. Because Manzoukas told us. Oh, he did, yes. So he is Scarecrow, Jace and Manzoukas, the Riddler is Conan O'Brien, Bane is Doug Benson, Starstruck is

Who's Who of Margo, Two-Face is Billy Dee Williams, oh, wait, Catwoman, Zoe, Kravis, Poison Ivy, Poison Ivy, how do I say, Ricky? Lindholm? Lindholm, yeah. Oh, wait. Catwoman. Zoe Kravitz. Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy. How do I say Ricky? Lindholm? Lindholm, yeah.

and teams up with them and Alfred to stop the new threat although his teammates achieve some success in fighting the multiverse's villains Batman forcibly sends them away to get tacos and confronts the Joker alone fearing he might lose them just like his parents Sam what you might not know is that or maybe you do from

than I thought. Who is the Phantom Zone's gatekeeper, shows Batman how he has mistreated Dick, Alfred, Barbara, and the Joker. Batman accepts his greatest fear of being part of a family and decides to change. Batman's teammates return to the fight

to help him but are endangered themselves. I don't know where I added chooses. Batman makes a deal with Phyllis to temporarily return to Gotham to retrieve the Zone's escaped prisoners and arrives in time to save his roommates teammates, but they are his roommates apologizing for them for leaving them and

requesting their help to stop the Joker. They agree with Barbara taking on the Batgirl costume, which I felt could have come earlier. It could have came way earlier. Also, this felt very much like, um, not a nightmare before Christmas, uh, Christmas Carol, Christmas time. Oh, where he sees

like the Ghost Before Christmas this is the Christmas Carol the Ghost Before Christmas the one Dickens yeah where it's like

showing him his life being like you bad yeah there was this thing where they showed the photo of him with his parents in the moment

before they're killed and then we see them take a selfie and I was like it's just like that selfie. And then it was. And I was like, I'm so amazing. You're so smart.

I'm paying such close attention. Now who's the worst ghost detective? But I thought that was cute that he has a family. Because that's something we've missed in every movie. It never ends with any sort of relationship or anything. No, he's never adopting. Well, I mean, in Batman and Robin. Batman Forever? Oh, Batman Forever. No, he's never adopting. Oh, Batman Forever, yeah, he does get a teen. Oh, the teen. Because remember, Robin's whole family died while he was rolling a bomb into a river. Right, right. I don't know how you could have forgotten that, Lauren. I want him to have romance. He didn't make it clear that Barbara

was a platonic friend here. They were not gonna do sex in the Lego universe. In the Lego universe, yeah. Sort of admiration. Yeah, and then it's like, how do Legos fuck? Like, they would get stuck and they don't have to help them. I liked how he saw them naked. I mean, that sounds so gross.

Whenever they would change pants, though. Yeah, and you saw like little flesh shows. It was so weird. It was very funny. Also, Robin's costume with the little legs out that made me laugh and the glitter cape that was funny so with the help from joker's team who felt neglected by the joker when he refused to break them out of arkham batman and his team defeat the escaped multiverse's villains and send them back to the phantom zone however, the Joker's bomb explodes, tearing

Gotham apart and the plates below the city. Yeah, there's just plates underneath Lego City. Batman convinces Joker to help him by telling him he gives him purpose to be the hero he is. And with the help of every civilian and villain, they manage to save Gotham,

chain-licking themselves together with their heads. I really liked that. That was very satisfying. It was really cute. Yeah. They link up head to foot. Head to foot.

And create a chain across where the bridge should be. And that was very charming. And I loved it. In the aftermath, Batman reveals to Dick that he is Wayne in disguise, then goes to return to the Phantom Zone to face the consequences of his earlier behavior. Phyllis prevents Batman from entering the Phantom Zone after realizing he's a hero and seeing how he changed to save everyone. Afterward, Batman gives the Joker and the rest of the villains a head start, knowing

they will be no match for the Bat family. I liked it. It was cute. I liked it. It was very cute. Have you seen other Lego films? I have. I saw the Lego movie, the first Lego movie.

I think I saw that one at some point. I didn't see that. I love that. I went to the theater and saw that like three times. Yeah. Oh, three times. I loved it so much. So how many movies are there before this happens?

I think this was the second one. Then they did Lego Movie 2. Oh. Okay. But Lego Batman was a character in Lego Movie. I think I saw that one. And it was very, I think it was, from what I remember first, Everything is Awesome is the song that really gets stuck in your head.

Oh, yes, yes, yes. But it's like really cute how they established the whole Lego world. And then, I mean, this gets to play on everything. They've already established all the fun Lego bits. So they don't really have to do that as much. And then they can do, this gets to play on everything. Through the credits. It really got me good. I thought I was curious if it was going to be a scene or if it was going to be important to something I needed to know but it wasn't it was just gone just friends or family I really liked it it was such a nice movie to be like

yeah you don't have to do everything on your own yeah call a friend I watched the last half with my daughter who's two and she was really into the whole Godzilla King Kong craziness. We watch Frankenweenie every day. She loves the movie Frankenweenie, which I think might be completely inappropriate.

But it's really cute. And there's a turtle that gets made humongous into it. And then she just always calls it. So she calls the movie Big Turtle. And she was calling this Big Turtle 2 because she wasn't saying the number two And she was calling this Big Turtle 2. She wasn't saying the number 2. She was like, Big Turtle 2? There's a Big Turtle also.

And then she wanted to watch Big Turtle 2 again. That's great. Big Turtle 2. Yeah, yeah. That's so funny. Very wonderful. I was like, Big Turtle 2. We can put it into our rotation. I accept this movie as one of the ones that we watch over and over again.

I can't believe. I love that. Yeah. Batman staying with you. Batman can stay. I mean, we watch Monsters over again. I can't believe! I love that! Batman's staying with you. Batman can stay. We watch Monsters, Inc. all the time, too. There's a few that I know very well now. I never thought...

I've always been a person who watches a movie one time and then kind of forgets it all. I now can quote Monsters, Inc., Monsters University, Frankenweenie. What's Frankenweenie about? It's about a boy who's... It's a Tim Burton movie and it's all black and white animation

and then claymation or whatever it is but his dog dies and then he re he stitches it back together and makes like a Frankenstein dog wow pretty dark

I know we kind of skip the dog dying if we catch it in time we just go like oh look they're already doing this part oh but it's yeah it's a pretty dark film going, oh, look, they're already doing this part. Oh, yeah. But, yeah, it's a pretty dark film. That's really sweet.

So, let's hear about the awards and reception for Lego Batman. It earned $312 million worldwide against a budget of $80 million. I would say that's a win for Warner Brothers. I'd agree. And we always want to make sure. Yeah, we want Warner Brothers to win.

They deserve the world. They do. Critics, they had good things to say about this movie. Praising both the comedy and animation style, it holds a 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, making the second highest ranking Batman on the site behind The Dark Knight. Wow. That's actually really interesting. To me, it's Batman Begins, Lego Batman, and then The Dark Knight. I'm going to go Batman Begins, then Tim Burton Batman Returns.

He's like, we're gonna get nuts. Gang, let's get nuts. And the Joker shoots him and his line is never ever rub a nothing man's rhubarb. Wow. I love this.

It's very nice. All that Prince music. When Batman and Robin are fighting the Phantom Zone villains, Batman is spinning Robin around while Robin kicks away a bunch of Agent Smiths. Oh, this is a reference to The Matrix. Well, I've never seen that. You've never seen The Matrix? Yeah. It's honestly great.

It's great. The first one was really good. I heard the other ones that I don't need to see. The first one. Never bothered. But there's a little boy in it who's like, talking about spoons.

Honestly, that's never been referenced to me before. I've heard a lot of Matrix references in my life. It's not one of them. Now I want to know. I really like that part.

He's like a little ball-headed boy and he's bending a spoon. He's like, why is he bald? I don't know because He's like a little ball and he's bending a spin. He's like, why is he ball? I don't know because he's magic. After Batman agrees to work with the others

to stop the Joker, the cast offer to help Batman and he replies, what am I going to do? Get a bunch of criminals together to fight the criminals? That's a stupid idea. This was a jab
