Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Welcome to NFL Daily, where we're big fans of Roddy White, just like Anthony Edwards. I'm Greg Rosenthal. We're here Monday morning on the West Coast, and Nick Shook is going to run through a lot of big news, yeah, including the fact that Anthony Edwards of the Timberwolves dropped a great player comp. You don't normally hear comparing his teammate Io DeSoonmu to the great Falcons. receiver Roddy White with his catch late in that game.
Starting point is 00:00:37 I feel like we don't give Roddy White the credit he deserved because those Falcons teams never really achieved anything of like that you could really remember. He was a hell of a football player for quite some time with the Falcons. So he reminds me a little of a of the line I said about Alec Pierce a lot throughout last season, which was no matter how good you think Alec Pierce is, he's better. Now Roddy White was another level of player, certainly to Alec. Pierce. He's the truth. Ball players, no. At the very best, a little overshadowed there by Julio Jones, kind of like Reggie Wayne was, by Marvin Harrison for a minute, but he was that good
Starting point is 00:01:13 at his very peak. Just not as long of a peak. This is going to be like the Roddy White of shows, Nick, because people think the haters are saying, oh, there's not much going on in the NFL these days. I was one of those haters last week. And yet, since we last taped, I have found 19 different items of news that we've learned just since last Thursday that you got to know, Shook. Are you ready for just a nuts and bolts
Starting point is 00:01:40 news rundown? I think it's a little juicier than you would expect. Yeah, I mean, look, even if you don't consider yourself a sicko, if you listen to NFL daily long enough, you're going to become indoctrinated to becoming a sicko,
Starting point is 00:01:49 and we're going to get you there with shows like this. Let's do it. Sneaky amount of news over the last couple of days, including a bunch of veteran signings. We'll get to Joanne Jennings, Bruce Hall had a new contract,
Starting point is 00:02:00 But we'll start with David Injoku because it's the freshest one, signing with the Chargers for up to $8 million. We'll see what the real money is. My guess is it's up to eight. It's probably more like five. So they're not paying too much money for a year of David and Joku. You're a Browns fan famously, Chuck. What do you think Injoku has to offer the chargers at this stage of his career?
Starting point is 00:02:26 I would say more unfortunately than famously. Well, it's interesting because they have kind of gone all in on tight ends. You know, they made the big signing of Charlie Kohler basically right at the start of free agency to give themselves a dynamic tight end group. We know they have in A Ronde Gadsden, a guy that I think you and I both really like and can't wait to see what else he can do. Njoku kind of fits somewhere in between, which is a super athletic player whose hands are like hit or miss. He either makes spectacular one-handed grabs of the game of the line or he drops routine passes. A guy that some people say doesn't block as well as you would like him to, but when he does block, he's still. pretty consistent. It's just more about effort than anything. And I think at that money,
Starting point is 00:03:01 that makes sense. So it gives them options. This is still a team that I think is going to want to pound the run as much as possible and use multiple tight ends to their advantage. So adding him in there makes some sense. And it's good for him to get another opportunity after he sat out there and free agency for a while. It's funny because they were attached to Kenyon Sadiq as a possible landing spot, which people were surprised by. But Daniel Jeremiah, our friend threw that out there. He covers the chargers very closely. And that made me realize, okay, Sadiq is high on their board. And, you know, a younger David and Joku, not dissimilar. And it just makes me think, look, they're going to use two tight ends quite a bit. So you really need three tight ends if you're
Starting point is 00:03:38 going to use two. Gadsden is more of a pass catcher. He did lead all tight ends with plus 20 yard catches last year, which is crazy. But I actually think they needed this move. As excited as I am, that they bring in a blocking tight end and that they get their tackles healthy, I just felt like they need just a little more on offense. But now you're giving me Gadsden. Injoku, you got Kohler as a blocker, and then at receiver you have Ladd, Quentin Johnston, Trey Harris as your third. You added Brennan Thompson, a speedster who Mike McDaniel likes as your fourth round pick. Like, okay, that's enough.
Starting point is 00:04:10 I felt like they needed one more thing, and this was it. Speaking of Mike McDaniel, he spoke, and so if we can get some sound into the show, we're going to do it. Mike McDaniel spoke over the weekend at their rookie minicamp, but about his guy, Justin Herbert, trying to maximize. Justin Herbert entering year six. His expectations are the highest for himself, which is a great thing for the Chargers organization team, fan base, everybody.
Starting point is 00:04:40 So I would say that we're looking to master and be elite at everything that we do and being able to own the position in a new way, for him to own the position in a way he never has, and ultimately for it to be obvious to everyone around. he's playing the best football of his career. Ooh, I like that very specific goal there, that it'd be obvious, even to simpletons like us, that he's playing his best ball.
Starting point is 00:05:08 I'm more excited about this partnership than almost anything in the 2026 season, Chuck. And it's interesting those words, because if you think about Herbert's career, I think it's fair to say, and he's coming off a year where he finished, what, fifth in your QB index? I went and checked.
Starting point is 00:05:26 where the first three years of his career were better than the next two years of his career, I would say, which is very rare. And then last year, you saw that growth in your late 20s that you want to see. Now you get McDaniel. What do you think about him with Njoku added and then this whole group around him with McDaniel?
Starting point is 00:05:47 Well, first off, I love the idea of Mike McDaniel offensive coordinator of the Chargers because he goes from Miami where he was like kind of this trendy looking head coach, but it never really felt like he maybe, on the outside was the typical head coach. Now he's back in, I think, his perfect spot, which is the offensive mastermind equipped with the quarterback who is supremely talented
Starting point is 00:06:05 and can actually maximize what Mike McDaniel wants to do schematically. It's just about whether they can protect him. That's been the story for a while. Well, a good way to protect him is to be able to be dynamic enough offensively that you're unpredictable. And that's been Mike McDaniel's offenses with the Charger, or with the Dolphins, and now I think it's going to be with the Chargers. And they have, there's a multiplicity to this team now with multiple tight ends
Starting point is 00:06:24 with the receivers that we already talked about. I think they're going to be one of the more entertaining offenses as long as they can stay healthy up front. Because if they can, you can't give me any reason that they can't be one of the more explosive units in the NFL and really start to take advantage of what Justin Herbert brings to the table, which is why it's good that he sets that expectation for him at this point in the offseason. It's funny. I've actually been hesitant to be too high on the chargers in the Harba era, at least last year. And yet they have hit their over under like two years in a row. They've won two, you know, seasons, 11 games in a row. 11 wins two seasons in a row.
Starting point is 00:07:00 It's early. I don't want to be predicting the season, but they might be reeling me back in for some sort of big prediction. There's kind of a clash, too, if you think about it, like the way that Harbaugh or Harbaugh likes to coach his teams and the style that he likes to play and what McDaniel likes to do. So that's what's going to make it fascinating is like, how can they balance that? Does he kind of just give the offensive keys to McDaniel
Starting point is 00:07:18 and lets him kind of go wild and or does he have more oversight over it? We'll see. Right. But are they different? Because ultimately, McDaniel does his best work in theory in the running game. And that very much lines up with what Arbaugh. But the style has been different. But you also can't disconnect Harbaugh from Greg Roman for all those years
Starting point is 00:07:38 because that style has meshed for so long. So that's really where the identity switch. It's not super different, but it's different enough to make me really interested to see what happens. Well, considering they let him bring in Brennan Thompson, who's a very McDaniel-coded fourth-round receiver, who it was clear that was his guy. And then they let him bring in Cole Strange.
Starting point is 00:07:54 who was with him in Miami to kind of be more of a zone blocking. I think it's going to be a lot of McDaniel, and it's crazy. I said year six for Herbert before. It is year seven. It's go time. It's year three of the Harbaugh era. Like this is when the 49ers teams took off.
Starting point is 00:08:10 People are going to get sick of Harbaugh soon. Like if they're not going to do it this year, when are they going to do it? All right, that's two nuggets. We got 17 more to go. The schedule release is coming out Thursday, officially. We'll be on the NFL channel live. be dropping a podcast right when the schedule release comes out as well. Little drips and drabs throughout the week are going to happen.
Starting point is 00:08:31 The Cowboys and the Giants will be the week one Sunday night football game. It's a couple days after the 25th anniversary of 9-11, so that I think could impact it. I also think you want to get the Giants into prime time plenty, but maybe early in the season, just in case it doesn't go well. So you got Jackson Dart, hopefully Malik Neighbors, you got Dak. We've seen that exact week one matchup on Sunday night plenty of times. It also means those two teams will not be facing Seattle in the kickoff game. My pick weeks ago was the Bears in that game, and so I wouldn't be surprised if that's the pick.
Starting point is 00:09:03 But I promise, I do not know. Speaking of the Giants, that's item number three. Number four is that we had rookie camps over the weekend. Shook, rookie camps are over. And John Harbaugh got to talk about his two rookie first round picks in front of a podium. They were in uniforms. I get excited about this stuff. Let's listen to John Harbaugh talking about.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Arvel Reese, the linebacker. I thought he moved well. You know, he's 6'4 plus, about 240-some pounds, and yet he moves like a smaller guy. You know, he moves his feet. He can flip his hips, very natural-looking mover off the ball, which was something we saw on tape. We thought we saw, but now we saw it in the practice field,
Starting point is 00:09:44 so he feel better about it, you know. Picks things up really quick, very serious-minded, very diligent about the assignments. I don't think he got one assignment wrong. throughout the two days, which is great to see. Love that. This makes me so happy. Like, when we went back in mock draft season,
Starting point is 00:10:02 I didn't think this was going to happen. I thought he was already going to be gone. Now that it's only May, but hearing John Harbaugh talk about Arvel Reese in this fashion makes me think this is the perfect fit team-wise for him. I was so worried that a team was going to draft him and just box him in an edge and not let him play off ball because he's just such a good athlete.
Starting point is 00:10:19 And this is exactly what he looked like at Ohio State. So to hear that it's carried over, rookie mini camp's different because you're just out there with the rookies. You don't really have the comp with the veterans and the real level of play that you're going to encounter in the NFL. But it's always good to hear that he's on top of his P's and Q's from the start. It's just a good way to start. And I cannot wait to see what he can do in this defense this year. And I've seen you people out there clowning on Reese's interviews.
Starting point is 00:10:43 Hey, he's not going to give you a great quote. I care about what he does on the field. And I'm excited. No assignments missed. I mean, is it stupid that I'm getting excited? about this? Of course it's stupid. One thing that was cool, though, was they did the reveal of all the cameras and the documentary during the draft, and they had some celebrations from the Giants. They really were just hoping Reese would fall to them. It happened. And then Harbaugh actually said to Reese on
Starting point is 00:11:12 the phone, we said God would make this happen, and it did. So heaven sent. God made it happen. By the way, Harba also. Divine draft board intervention. I mean, they, They were fired up. Also, in that documentary, it was really interesting. Pretty soon after they drafted Maui Noah, or actually after they made their second round pick, Harbaugh immediately says to Joe Shane. All right, let's start figuring out how we can move up
Starting point is 00:11:38 to go get Malachi Fields. So it just shows you the type of influence Harba has. Now, they didn't move up, did they? I think they just sticked and picked, but they got Malachi Fields. And it shows how important Harbaugh specifically is to the entire. process. Let's talk about some big free agent signings. We had some. We had Injoku and we had
Starting point is 00:11:58 Joanne Jennings. We've been talking about what team's going to get Joanne Jennings. On my short list of the best fits was Minnesota Vikings, so I'm really excited to see him land there. Eight million dollar base salary. They're not paying too much money, up to $13 million in incentives. I think Jennings' agent did not do him any favors this offseason. He's definitely settling for less than maybe he could have gotten in the first day or two if he wasn't trying to get paid between $15, $20 million. And definitely less than I think the 49ers were offering like last year.
Starting point is 00:12:28 So that's unfortunate for the player, but it's fortunate for me, Shook, because I want to see Kyler with some fun weapons. And what a great trio that is that Kyler can throw to now with Addison number two behind Justin Jefferson. And it gives you some insurance because we've seen times when Addison
Starting point is 00:12:44 hasn't been on the field and it's just been Justin Jefferson and then basically T.J. Hawkinson. So it gives you some insurance against that and also just expands the ability to have, you know, that you can throw to the variety of it, just gives defenses more to account for.
Starting point is 00:12:56 And it gives Kyler Murray a higher chance of success in what we expect to be his first season as the Vikings starter. And it brings, this is going to be a great clash, I think. It brings the NFL's established heel from 2025, Joanne Jennings, to one of the nicer regions in the United States,
Starting point is 00:13:13 which is in Minnesota. And we'll see how those two mix and whether he can continue to be the heel for his new team. They'll love it because he plays so hard. That's what Kevin O'Connell said at the press conference. he said, Minnesota fans are going to fall in love with how he plays football because of his blocking. And then he pointed out, look, you need someone who can do something after making a play at the catch point. We love Jennings after the catch.
Starting point is 00:13:35 I saw the most ridiculous thing from some Vikings fan that said, is this better than Moss, Chris Carter, and Jake Reed? No, what are you talking about? Of course it's not. But it's one of the better one, two, three is in the NFL. I think I can say that. I'd have to go through the list, and I don't think it's number one. But it's up there. I mean, it's a really good number three and a really good number two in terms of Addison
Starting point is 00:13:56 and maybe the best at number one. Yeah, hopefully, you know, they can kind of avoid the pit. I mean, look, if we look at the Vikings from last year, they were a quarterback away from, and they still won nine games with a team that didn't have a quarterback for most of the season. If they could get that figured out, then who knows, maybe the sky's limit. They did have some, you know, departures and some changes the off season because of cap restrictions. But yeah, I like it. I'm excited to see what happens there.
Starting point is 00:14:17 I think they had a sneaky great off season, considering how they, had to get rid of salary. They were so over the salary cap. I don't know why they couldn't get more for Jonathan Grenard or that, like, why did you, did you have to trade them? I guess you did.
Starting point is 00:14:32 But considering their limitations, I think you look at their roster. I think it's, I think it's one of the better rosters in the NFL. And by better, I mean, like, a top 10 roster as long as Kyler Murray
Starting point is 00:14:41 can play well. They do say, this is an open competition with J.J. McCarthy. Yeah, we'll see. We'll see about that. Reese Hall thought he was going to be playing for a contract this.
Starting point is 00:14:52 year. And instead, the Jets extended him. He gets three years, $45 million on the extension. I think the key number is $29 million in guarantees. I haven't seen the exact specifics, but my strong guess is this is closer to a two-year, you know, $30-ish million contract, which is good business for Brees Hall. He said it's the first time he cried since he suffered that devastating knee injury a couple of years ago. So I think a smart move actually by the That's the lock-in one weapon when you have such a young group there and a lot of uncertainty over the next couple years. This was a team that, you know, the whole narrative on him and the idea that maybe they would trade him last season just didn't really feel like it made a ton of sense, given what he'd done in his previous seasons. What's good, though, is that, A, they keep him.
Starting point is 00:15:45 I think it makes the most sense for them to keep him as a key part of this offense, especially as they continue to cycle through quarterbacks and now it's Gino's team, right? but it's also a win for him because his franchise tag number was going to be right around the same range and instead you're getting 15 a year over three hopefully he gets the end of the three but i mean if you look at the money when comparison to other running backs you're top five per year right now so now the pressure's on now you got to go deliver here's a thing though it's basically a two-year contract and it gives him that extra year of security and they can't franchise them a second time. And if you're the Jets, how I think of it, you're like, do the Jets really need to be playing a running back? You got to pay someone, okay? And if you look at their roster, it is so young.
Starting point is 00:16:29 Obviously, Garrett Wilson is a big dollar guy, but with Membu and with Faschanoo and all the players that they've just drafted, and then they've got these old guys on defense that are going to be gone. You have to pay someone, and this contract won't have any guaranteed money by the time you have to pay all these younger players money. So I think it really fits in with the timeline. And the point is to try to win games, and I think he will help you do that. So good on the Jets and Breece Hall. I actually like the offseason that they've had. Let's see if Aaron Glenn can take advantage of it. Another man, and this is our seventh point. Breece Hall was six, Juan Dennings five, here's the seventh thing you need to know. George Payton, I mean,
Starting point is 00:17:04 in a world where there's not many guaranteed contracts, shook, you know, in football, and media, I mean, that extend out to 2030. George Payton, whom people might not know who that is. the Broncos general manager, not spelled the same as Sean Payton, and he preceded Sean Peyton in Denver and promptly traded for and gave Russell Wilson a massive contract and gave up picks for that. He somehow has survived that, and he's signed through 2030 now with Sean Payton. What do you think about that partnership that the Peyton says is really born fruit? I think it's really funny how one season of success can completely change the narrative of a guy in the front office because they made the playoffs in brook in bo nix's rookie year that's
Starting point is 00:17:51 pretty good i know but this season was was significantly better than that first season and i think it's a weird dynamic anytime you have a coach with a strong of a presence as sean peyton does that oftentimes the gm is left in the shadow i think that that's probably going to happen in new york too probably for better than worse with the way the giants have been over the last five or so years with John Harbaugh. But it felt like he was a holdover from a previous regime. He was a guy who got his job partially because John Elway promoted himself out of potentially getting fired as GM of the Broncos back in the day. And the Russell Wilson move was the biggest stain on his resume. But he made up for it in tandem with Sean Payton by drafting Bo Nix, a pick that a lot of people
Starting point is 00:18:35 will credit to Sean Payton, not George Payton. Now he gets rewarded because they have that successful season. and there were one game away from the Super Bowl and everybody, optimism is running as high as possible in Denver with these Broncos right now. But I do think it's interesting because when he was first hired, it was a five-year deal. Now it's a five-year deal again. Does he make it to the end of the second five-year deal?
Starting point is 00:18:55 We know this league. NFL ends up not being, you know, not for long for a lot of people. Okay, fair enough. We'll see if he gets there. We'll see if he gets there. Now they have really good line play on both sides of the ball. And George Payton was involved in drafting. Some, certainly not all of those.
Starting point is 00:19:10 but he had the free agency move, like bringing in Zach Allen, for instance, from Arizona. So a lot of good moves by George Payton. And then I did see the thing where he was floated as a candidate in Minnesota, which is where he came from. So maybe you're using that a little bit as leverage. But the number one takeaway is he just works well with Sean Payton. You're absolutely right.
Starting point is 00:19:29 Sean Payton's the most important person in the organization. He's also in his 60s. He doesn't want to be doing everything. And he said he's been blessed to have these relationships with his GMs, Mickey Loomis. and how I read into that is like these relationships where they know their place and we work really well together
Starting point is 00:19:46 and that's what you want. You want continuity and it's okay. Like take that long-term money, George Payton. That's point number seven. For points eight through 10, we're going to do something where we go around the rookie mini camps.
Starting point is 00:20:00 We're calling this rookie minicamp corner. I'm just going to give you some nuggets of what happened over at the rookie minicamp. You can't take too many takeaways here. Jordan Tyson? Top 10 pick for the Saints, apparently look great. Day one, then wasn't to be seen day two. But then the Saints said this was a planned absence.
Starting point is 00:20:20 We're working him back solely off the hamstring. Who knows? If it wasn't a planned absence, I would kind of expect them to lie about it. But I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say it wasn't a lie. They're just being careful with their young player, Jordan Tyson. So he sat out the second day, but that's fine. The Vikings gave a little more clarity to where their first round picks, Caleb Banks, is at. If you remember, they took the defensive tackle in the first round.
Starting point is 00:20:46 Kevin O'Connell said they hope to see him back on the field in late July. So he's still a while from being healthy coming off that foot injury. That was a big risk that they took with Caleb Banks. Just some perspective there. And then finally, Mike McCarthy reported to be extremely, a quote extremely from the athletic, hands-on with Drew Aller in the rookie minicamp. That's what Mike McCarthy loves to do, is coach up some rookie quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:21:13 Any thoughts of those three nuggets from the minicams this weekend? I'm going to work back to front here. I am not at all shocked that Mike McCarthy would be extremely hands-on with Drew Aller because this felt like a Mike McCarthy can make him into something pick when they spent the third rounder on him. So, of course, his first opportunity to work with him, he's going to be very hands-on. He has the history of successful quarterback play.
Starting point is 00:21:33 It makes sense. We'll see if it actually produces anything. but it doesn't surprise me at all. Banks, that was his guy, though. It's like, he has to prove that it's his guy. In a way that maybe Will Howard is not his guy. And that's why I didn't believe the whole. We love our sixth round pick that didn't see the field last year.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Will Howard, no offense to Will Howard, but I wasn't buying that Steelers. Banks, yeah, it's an associated risk. You never liked that idea. And I think that's part of why he was a surprise when they made that pick. But look, look, if that's your guy and you believe that this is just going to be a short-term thing and the investment's worth, and then you make the investment. the Tyson thing. That's what the investment didn't make sense to me at the time when the Saints spent that pick on him. And to hear this already, I'm not sounding any alarms.
Starting point is 00:22:13 I just know that when a receiver has an injury history and when it deals with hamstrings, which let's look at Mike Evans career, fantastic player, going to be a Hall of Famer. All that's great. Hopefully Jordan Tyson has the same career. It would be an incredible success if he did. But the consistent thing with him over the years was that his hamstring always kind have popped up every year or two. And it cost him time. And the Saints could not afford to draft another player who couldn't stay on the field all the time after they have Chris Olavay and his struggles to stay on the field.
Starting point is 00:22:43 So hopefully they're managing it now so that's not a problem in the future. But this was my big red flag with him. Yeah, I'm not going to assume the worst for Jordan Tyson in mid-May, not a big deal. But our friend Dap Boy Wolf Ryan of the Saints Black Party podcast retweeted something he had said back in February, just like, look, Tyson's worth a risk. but that quote, not spotting Tyson out here at training camp tweet is going to hit like a shotgun in the chest in July. So that's how fans think we're going to be more positive
Starting point is 00:23:13 about Jordan Tyson and all the rookies. Let's take a quick break. And then we got our nine final things that we learned about the NFL in the last handful of days. I'm Luke Wilson. Join me each week for Film Never Lies. Since retiring from the NFL, I've had a lot of my mind. Now got my own show.
Starting point is 00:23:34 So if you're tired of lazy takes, if you want honest conversations, join us each week. Film Never Lies, available on all TSN platforms and the IHeart Radio app. Got good news for you, Shuck. I know it's keeping you up at night. The National Football League, which we still work for, we're not going to ESPN.
Starting point is 00:23:58 We're true to the game. They've agreed with the refs on a deal. There's no lockout. There's no fail-marry through T's. 2032. The refs are in business. I'm just happy it's a story we don't have to talk about. It's over. That's it. Yes. And frankly, call me curmudgeon if you must, but I was already tired of this and I was really hoping that it would be resolved pretty quickly and before the deadline in May. And I'm glad that we got there because it's always better when us shield guys can say the same thing about the guys
Starting point is 00:24:31 and stripes, that they're also shield guys and that labor peace reigns. We always love labor peace. I mean, I don't consider, wow, us shield guys. Yeah. stuff. I like it because it's just, I mean, what are we doing here? The NFL is a what billion dollar business and we're going to have like subpar refs doing the games, but we didn't even get close to it. It's non-story. You know what else is a non-story? Then it wouldn't have made our show. I was going to say the fact that the Colts finally cut Kenny Moore. That's rude to Kenny Moore, frankly. This is our 12th item of news. They had to cut him. They tried to trade him. He's had a great career as a slot cornerback.
Starting point is 00:25:08 it wasn't great last year. He's aging. We'll see if someone signs him. He did not make my top 101 free agents list like late in the game. They still do allow me to add because I like the fact that there's almost no one on it now after Injoku and Jennings got taken off. Like we're down to, I think, single digits on the 101 list. So that's Kenny Moore. But I do have a Colts item for you as number 12 that I want to get your thoughts on.
Starting point is 00:25:35 Anthony Richardson back at Colts, you know, voluntary workouts, and soon they'll be on the field. And yet, Shane Stike and the coach, when asked, will he compete with Riley Leonard for the number two overall quarterback job behind Daniel Jones? Wouldn't even commit to that. Like, what are we doing here, Shook? What are we doing?
Starting point is 00:25:55 I think what we're doing here is we're seeing the final days of Anthony Richardson with the Colts, and the only reason he's still with the Colts is because he can't find a trade partner for him. And so that's why Shane Stike. is going to take that approach. Okay, I've got a crazy idea for you. Let me throw this by you. You drafted a quarterback number four overall, okay, three years ago.
Starting point is 00:26:16 In the games that he has started, your team has a winning record for what it's worth. And that was in his ages 21 and 22 seasons. He's now turning 24, I believe, in a couple weeks. A little bit older than Riley Leonard, a sixth round pick. He has some physical skills that made you want to take him number four overall. He was supposedly very even in a battle with Daniel Jones for a while last year. That was like even footing. And then, you know, he lost that and he was not able to play the rest of the year
Starting point is 00:26:54 because of a like crazy injury that like took out his orbital bone. Here's my crazy suggestion for you. I'm going to go ahead and let him compete. Pete with Riley Leonard. There might be a chance here while your starter is coming off of a torn Achilles that the guy you actually evaluated and took fourth overall is better at football and has more potential than Riley Leonard. I would give him that chance. You don't say. This is not a crazy idea at all. This is the common sense move. But that's why I say that he's not long for Indianapolis. If they could trade him, they would because the fact that they won't even commit to it tells me
Starting point is 00:27:28 everything you need to know about the way that the coaching staff feels about him. But I agree with you. And I wish that he could get an opportunity to prove that a team should take a chance on him. Because when it all basically fell apart when he took himself out of the Houston game. I get it. I get it. But there's still still still there. You know where it would be a great chance, Shook? You know where it would be a great, a perfect place for him to get that opportunity?
Starting point is 00:27:53 Who needs a starter right now? That he knows the scheme with a quarterback coach that's been very good with mobile quarterbacks. How about Indianapolis and with Shane Steichen? That feels like a good place to maybe That's the only chance by the way That you'll ever have to rehab his value. I'm planting my flag here. He would have to end up with a team
Starting point is 00:28:16 That's so desperate to throw a quarterback on the field That they have no other option. Like he's got to be on a roster And they've lost their starter And maybe their backup And then he just gets out there and he balls out And reclaims his career. That's basically his best chance.
Starting point is 00:28:30 Richardson. he doesn't even have to be that much better than he was last time around. You have Daniel Jones coming off at Tor and Achilles. Who knows if he's ready for a week one? This should be the situation for him to do it. What are you so afraid of the cults? Exactly. You're afraid that he's going to look good.
Starting point is 00:28:44 If he happens to look good, you could actually trade him for something. Whatever he could give you this year in September is going to be worth more than the sixth round pick. So that's my corner. Richardson for Colts, 2026. It's not that crazy. We got kicker news for items 13. and 14. Chris Boswell has signed a four-year $28 million extension. One of the most underrated players in the league, according to Patrick Claibon, maybe one of Patrick's favorite players.
Starting point is 00:29:12 In terms of the extension, that matches Brandon Aubrey at the top of the kicker pile. So good on him. And then the Packers released Brandon McManus after drafting the incredibly named Trey Smack in the sixth round of the draft a couple weeks ago, an item we never hit on this show. wanted to give a shout out to Trace Smack, who looks like he's probably the Packers kicker this year. A younger me would have been really eager to hear that first smacks it through the uprights, but the older
Starting point is 00:29:41 me is dreading the first. Smacks it through the uprights. That would be great. Hey, shots of Boswell, by the way, for getting an extension after having kind of one of his worst seasons of his career, 84.4%, which is still quite good as a field goal kicker this past season as, prior to being 93.5 and 93.2%
Starting point is 00:29:57 conversion rate, the two previous seasons. It was surprising when he missed the kicks that he did, but he's still so consistent over the course of his career with the Steelers, that, I mean, that guy's like, they don't give kickers statues, but if they could, they would probably put one outside of Accrocer Stadium or put his name on the facade. That's how good he's been for so long.
Starting point is 00:30:13 He's one of the five best kickers of his era. I mean, you have to define era, but he is up there. McManus, not so much. We'll see if he lands somewhere else. Items 15 through 16. Unfortunately, Jeremiah Ousu, Coromoa, we've mentioned reports that his career
Starting point is 00:30:29 could be over a few times. The Brown's placed him on reserve PUP list, which knocks him out for this season. If you guys remember, he's had a neck injury that he's been trying to recover from. And he's just not going to be able to fulfill the potential here. And I actually think it's probably a good move by the Browns that they're still paying him. And that maybe is part of the reason why he's still on their roster. So we'll see Mike Dana is in Edge who has played for the Chiefs the last few years. He is now on the Buffalo Bills, just filling out their depth yard.
Starting point is 00:30:59 That's 15 and 16. some TV news today. That's number 17. Netflix was awarded two more games and Fox is getting two more games. These games were up for grabs, shook to get into the weeds because ESPN gave back some of that double-header Monday night football stuff, games, back to the NFL to do what they wanted with it. It wasn't going back to NFL Network.
Starting point is 00:31:25 It was they could do what they want. So Fox has a couple more games, including a Germany game and like a Saturday game. And then Netflix gets two more games, and they have five overall. So Netflix, like if, like they're becoming a real thing. And those games supposedly we're going to go to YouTube. That didn't happen. So we're also learning Peacock is getting an extra game on a Saturday. Those games already existed before, but it's now going to be a week 17, like Peacock, NBC doubleheader.
Starting point is 00:31:53 So more streaming, but not that much more streaming, frankly. Everyone complaining about the streaming. I think Netflix has done. You know, what was it, Christmas two years ago? It was their, like, debut. And there was minor technical issues, but nothing really major. And they've done better since then. And I think they've done better with most live sports since then.
Starting point is 00:32:12 I have one request. Do not overdo the presentation and do not give them post-game Netflix jackets anymore. The bit is played out. It's fine. I don't want to see a big, puffy red jacket again. It's more of Bert. Did you watch the baseball opener? No.
Starting point is 00:32:28 Did you watch James Bush in a hot dog cart? They went over the top there. Okay, that's fair. Yeah, and they still do have the Christmas games, and they just added a couple regular season games to the mix. I just wanted to say that time comes for us all. Cooper Rush was part of the rookie minicamp tryouts in Minnesota. Signed a pretty big contract last year,
Starting point is 00:32:49 and it was part of the triads. And Young Wai Ku, just weird seeing him in a Saints jersey for triouts. So just some names, I just felt like for our eight, 18th item, people should know I want our listeners to be the smartest listeners out there. And I also want them to celebrate players on their way out. And we finish with point number 19 here. Happy trails to Taylor Heineke. I don't know if you have any favorite Taylor Heineke memories.
Starting point is 00:33:19 You can think of them, shook, while the listeners check out his rushing touchdown from the 2020 wild card game against the Buccaneers. Five in the gun. There's the snap. Four-man rush. He has to back pedal. He's hit. He crouched as low.
Starting point is 00:33:36 He avoids the rush. He runs to the 10 to the near side. He's a five. Diving to the pylon. Nearside. It is a touchdown. Oh, my goodness. What a run by the Washington quarterback.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Touchdown, Washington. I don't need to hear that your favorite quarterback is sneaky athletic. Taylor Heineckee. He's really sneaky athletic. That was it. That was my favorite. favorite memory from him. You got to think about the context of this time. We're in COVID. It's 2020. They're the newly minted Washington football team with just random numbers on the sides of their
Starting point is 00:34:10 helmets and little branding. They somehow make it into the playoffs with Taylor Heineke. And then he pulls that off in that game. My favorite memory is the still image or the slow motion image of Chase Young pointing at Heineke's nameplate. Like, this is our guy. Remember the name. I'll remember your name, Taylor Heineke. Yeah, unfortunately, he's the defining quarterback of the Ron Rivera era of the Washington football team slash commander. You mean Kyle Allen's not the defining core? I'm just kidding. I went back in check because I was like, he actually did quite well.
Starting point is 00:34:43 He went 12 and 11 in two seasons as a starter for that team. The team won some games. And even though that was one of the worst teams to make the playoffs this decade, they were seven and nine. And for most of the year, not a great team. and then Heineke helped them get on a run to sneak in. He played really well in that game. They played really well in that game against a Bucks team and provided us some entertainment.
Starting point is 00:35:07 And it's very cliche for people to say when you see sons of NFL players now in the league or getting college offers, like Adrian Peterson Jr., I think just got a college offer, and everyone's like, oh, that makes me feel old. That's played out. What makes me feel old is that Taylor Heineke, was in the league for 11 years and he's retiring.
Starting point is 00:35:31 And that is, those are the types of things that are sneaky up on me more. I'm like 11 years, really? But good on you, Taylor Heineke. He made the most with what he had good NFL career. Yeah, my algorithms are all messed up right now because for some reason I love that type of content that reminds me that I'm old. Of course. And it's happening in sports and pop culture and just a reminder that like things that came out in 2007
Starting point is 00:35:55 are nearly 20 years old now. Yep. Taylor Heineke is going to be an incredible naming some guys guy. Oh, yeah. Like in like 10 years from now. You know, just like remember Taylor Heineke? And I can reveal here for the first time as we say goodbye. We are doing a naming some guys episode this off.
Starting point is 00:36:16 Oh. I hope I'm on that because that's my favorite game. Every analyst has gotten at me. The co-host shook everyone wants to be on this show. So it's going to be one of the hotly anticipated series. Remember John Skelton. Of the off-season. That's it for today.
