Starting point is 00:01:31 But we are taking your questions. The listeners of NFL Daily. I'm Greg Rosenthal here in the Chris Wesleying podcast studio with my friends, Patrick Claibon and Jordan Roderig of the athletic. And we're answering mailbag questions. Let's go. Yes, we are. Unless they pertain to the recently released album with significant features all across the musical landscape.
Starting point is 00:01:53 No, we're not discussing those. You'll have to find my text with our. old coworker, Andrew Groover. They're going to stay there. Let's get right to the mailbag. We asked for your questions. I wanted to make sure we got to them before we were totally broken apart for the off season.
Starting point is 00:02:11 So here's one from Trevor. I like this. He says, will Brock Purdy finish his contract with Kyle Shanahan? Trevor Lawrence? Still as his head coach. This is Top Trevor.
Starting point is 00:02:26 This is the top Trevor. On Blue Sky. where we asked for the questions. What do you think? I like that. I like this. I think that's the hope for everybody. I don't think you could ever speak in definitive
Starting point is 00:02:37 when you talk about the NFL with injuries and burnout and all kinds of things, whether it's the player or the coach. But like, yeah, I, oh, without Kyle Shanahan. Yeah, I was like, wow, we're really in the Ramble. No, no. I did not read that correctly. I think that they will finish,
Starting point is 00:02:55 I think that they'll finish this contract together as a cohesive unit that has probably some very interesting stories to share long after both of them retire. Yeah, I think the narrative benefits Kyle Shanahan in this instance where they find a quarterback, literally Mr. Irrelevant, and it's like, oh, Kyle Shanahan is uplifting this player in making him look a certain way. But I think the contract proves it that, like, Brock Purdy is Brock Purdy.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Like, this is a singularly talented in his particular skill set type of quarterback, but he's going to be linked to Kyle Shanahan forever until, I mean, Kyle Shanahan is probably going to coach for 20 more years. Well, I'm officially higher on Brock Purdy now than consensus. You're welcome. Based on that episode we did earlier this off season. You spent so many years, just like not wanting to, not wanting to see it. Like one year.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Not wanting to so many weeks and months. Players, you know, players improve. analysts improve. This is a two-part question, because first of all, he has to get to the end of the contract, you know, roughly 2030,
Starting point is 00:04:03 even if they tacked on more years. I'm not counting that, so 2030. So he would have to get to the end. Kyle Shanahan would still have to be the 49ers head coach then? Both the things have to happen. So you're saying,
Starting point is 00:04:16 is there a chance? I mean, of course, there's a, I would say there's a decent chance. What are the odds that Kyle Shanahan is still the 49ers head coach in five or six?
Starting point is 00:04:25 six years. This is a guy who burns that, that candle, like, he seemed pretty burnt out by the end of it. You only need to have, like, kind of one bad season for it all to go wrong. If I had to guess, are they still a tandem in 2030 or not? I think it's not. I just because so many things can happen, whether it's the Purdy side or the Shanahan side, I really don't think Shanahan and John Lynch are lasting that long, but that's not a hot. I think they fit together, honestly. I think that one of the regrets of certain members of that coaching tree was to not have kept Kirk long term or been able to be a partnership with Kirk Cousins long term. I think that Kyle Shanahan understands that. I think he is, they complement each other very well personality wise.
Starting point is 00:05:16 They, even with the burnout and even with the potential for injury and just, you know, general fatigue or deterioration of a player, they just, they match. And I think that Kyle has been through enough in his career, even when he was much younger and still experiencing high level things in the coaching world, I think he's been through enough to understand that when you find that, you stick with it as long as you can, because the grass isn't always greener. You've convinced me. And if Purdy is as good. Just like I convinced you on Park Purdy. If he's just as good as we think he is, then it'll go well and they'll just be there. But that's a long time in NFL years. Speaking of which, I mean, it feels like Tyriek Hill's
Starting point is 00:05:56 Dolphins career has already been a journey. It's only been a handful of years. Our next question is from Matt Arroyos. And he asks, if Tyreek gets traded at some point, what's your confidence level that Waddle can step in and become a number one on his own? And I wanted to expand this to like, do we think Tyreek will get traded? I don't think Tyreek is going to be get traded. I think collectively, and it's not just it can be vibes based but the things that Tua and Mike Mack are saying and also Tyreek Hill it collectively feels like everybody knows that this is the last this is the last
Starting point is 00:06:36 dance for this rendition of the Miami Dolphins unless they're successful and I don't see the world and where they're more successful by trading Tyreek Hill and and getting what I'm assuming is future draft picks and not necessarily a player who's going to impact things immediately. So I don't think Tyreek Hill is going to get traded. And yeah, we saw, we saw Waddle in a season in his rookie year without Tyreek Hill being a viable number one having like 115 catches. Right. That's a fair point. So however you want to define one, like does that make him a top 10 receiver in the league? No, I would not say that. But it's volume one is right. Right. Yeah. It's somewhere in the 20 range and does he have more to give.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Yeah, I think he is that good. I think his contract is worth it. The scenario for Tyree getting traded is that they're two and five before the trade deadline and ownership makes them because he's like, I don't see a future with this current group, but that would essentially be more or less giving up, which is, it's a little hard to, like, those trades just don't happen. And it could ultimately lead to like an AFC bidding war among contenders to not just to get Tyree Kill, but to keep somebody else from getting Tyree Kill. The NFL did move that trade deadline back. I liked when they did that. I hope they keep doing that. Like I wanted in, you know, mid-November. I want it after Thanksgiving when football really begin.
Starting point is 00:07:54 It's still early November, but that is a step in the right direction. All right. Our next question is from Timothy. And he asked, will Aaron Rogers be a better number eight than Tommy Maddox for the Steelers? I think that's a pretty high bar, actually.
Starting point is 00:08:14 A higher bar than most non-Stealers fans would say. because Steelers fans, I think, would say Tommy Gunn got us into the playoffs and gave us some fun. Like, we had fun with Tommy Gunn. I'm going to say no. That's my answer.
Starting point is 00:08:32 I like good quarterback nicknames. I'm a fan of that. I think because I think the answer is yes, but also it's instructive in that when they went on that run, Tommy Maddox threw 16 interceptions. And he threw 20 touchdowns. And he was out there taking chances.
Starting point is 00:08:48 And Aaron Roder, is so safe. It's so safe. I think if Aaron Rogers throw 16 interceptions, it's going to ultimately be a good thing because he's out there taking risks and it not only makes the Steelers more watchable.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Like, we love watching Aaron Rogers throw the football. We don't like Aaron Rogers throwing the football to people on the sideline and support staff. So like, go out there and try. Like, let's do it. Don't worry about the stats. Yeah, I'd like to see him go a little bit
Starting point is 00:09:14 Devil Maycare in the latest, latest, latest, latest stages of his career. I think that that would, whether it goes well or is a complete disaster, it is something so exciting for that fan base who've been waiting for a while. This is really just an excuse for me to talk about Tommy Maddox. Another advisor guy.
Starting point is 00:09:33 We've been talking a lot over the last couple shows about people who can pull off a visor. Tommy Maddox can pull off a visor. So he won that playoff game. Important detail to include in this segment. Against the Browns. And it was, I believe, the Brown's first playoff game as the new Cleveland franchise. 36 to 33.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Remember watching that with noted Steelers friend, my fan, my friend Anthony Jesselnik. And then the next week, they lost 34 to 31. So Tommy Maddox is putting up 30 points in back-to-back weeks in the playoffs. He won comeback player of the year that season. They went 7-3 in his starts in the regular season, taken over for Cordell Stewart. I mean, they were the Super, you know, a Super Bowl favorite, probably the favorite other than the Rams, certainly in the AFC, like the year before. And he takes over for Cordell Stewart.
Starting point is 00:10:23 It's a lot of controversy. He wins comeback player of the year. And what was he coming back from? He was coming back from being Tommy Maddox. He had not thrown more than 10 passes in a season for eight seasons. That is a, that is a Geno Smith like times two, time in the wilderness that you are in the NFL, but he literally didn't throw a pass for. six straight years. Then he threw seven. And then he comes in and has this, this renaissance.
Starting point is 00:10:49 Seven classes. Lucky number seven. Yes. Because he kind of Peterman in his rookie year. Yes. It was, was handed the ball to the other team a whole lot. Yeah. He was a first round pick. It didn't go well. And then he just was spending all sorts of time. And that was, you know, people, I don't, I don't think Aaron Rogers is going to reach those highs. I mean, 30 points in back to back playoff games, jokes aside is a real thing. He was playing at a high level. So I think if they got that sort of season out of Rogers, they'd be pumped. When one playoff game. play close. I mean, can we keep a playoff game, you know, under a 20 point lost Steelers? That would be nice. I just personally feel it's important to note for the record that that 2002 season, I was 10. Yeah, I'm not. To note that.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Not going to be in your wheelhouse. For the record. I was not working in football at the time. Well, I was a little bit. Fox Sports highlights. That was fun. What are the chances that the book written about Caleb Williams and quarterbacks derails the bear season and Caleb's career in Chicago if the bears are below 500 in
Starting point is 00:11:51 November and this is from Clive. Zero, Clive. Zero chance. Because A, it is a book about the American quarterback in general, the rise of the position, the history of the position, the sociology of the position, the psychology of the position. Knowing Seth Wickersham, the author a little bit, it's about so much more than Caleb will be. and the only people who could potentially derail Caleb Williams' career in Chicago are Caleb Williams and all the people in Chicago, you know? They're going to have patience. This is not like being under 500 in November is not that crazy or unexpected of a result.
Starting point is 00:12:33 They could be like two and seven and it's going to be hot and it's going to be a problem, but they're going to be patient with this group. And I don't think that's going to happen to be clear. How people play and execute the game is ultimately what to determine. Herman's things. And if, if palace intrigue from Seth Wickersham is what derails things, then how many Super Bowls should the Patriots have won? Also, it already happened. Right. Great points. Another great book. I, uh, that's a great point. If anything, you could say it's sort of. Yeah, maybe it makes everybody try it. It's a bump. Yeah. Dynasty incoming.
Starting point is 00:13:04 2014, 2016. Or it doesn't matter. And like, you just have to score more points than the other team. Yes. And I am excited to read that book. I will say. I am too. Our next question is from Andy. He says if the, yes, if the NFL had an award for the world would be a better place. If there were more people like you, who would be some candidates can be players, coaches, staff, front office, owners. I feel like you got a lot of people here. I have so many people. Fire them off. I wasn't prepared for this.
Starting point is 00:13:34 I wasn't even looking at these questions before we started. I can think, like I mentioned him on a previous show, Julius Peppers, Kurt Coleman, Thomas Davis. Um, uh, uh, Eric Reed. Um, let's see. I'm thinking of people who I was with in, in Carolina, Taylor, Taylor Moton, um, Chris Manhirts, who's always checking on. Chris Manhirts with a shout out. Um, J.J. Jansen. Um, uh, Rob Havenstein here in Los Angeles, uh, Puka Nakua, Epitomey of Joy. Um, you know, so, so many people, John Spitech, really, really good person. Um, Brian Zanders, who's going over in, in, to take a scouting job in Jacksonville, Taylor Morton, not Moton, but Morton, who is in a lead role in the Rams franchise
Starting point is 00:14:21 right now. I'm just naming like under the radar people minus Puka because I don't, we don't give a lot of these people like a ton of pop all the time. But there are so many good people in every corner of this league. It is just when the world feels bad and scary, it is really important to remember like how many good people there are. And there are so many good people in every locker room in all 32 of these teams and it's just awesome. Well said. Chris Bobona asked, isn't that just the Walter Peyton man of the year? And I say, no, not really, because that's, that service in your community. And this are Andrew Whitworth. Everyone should be more like Andrew Whitworth. Yeah, they are great, great people, of course, but we're highlighting
Starting point is 00:15:00 our own. And I think it's just more like, this is more about like what they're bringing energy wise to everyone around them. And not just because he was a man of the year, uh, winter, but Calais Campbell. Calais. Oh, so many like, it's all right. All time good dude. Not under anybody's right at our first fault because he's massive but he has those you know those official corporate awards and recognition but then you saw like when his teammate was being assaulted by the police
Starting point is 00:15:23 Calais Campbell was literally there yeah right this is it wasn't just talk and like you know organizing also like he took action immediately Bobby Wagner he does that for other people as well so like yeah I feel like coaches were underrepresented here let's start
Starting point is 00:15:39 Tamiko Ryans I think you would be a good one there were more people like Damico Ryan's the world would be a better place. Let's go to a surprising question from a guy who goes by first down punts on Blue Sky. And he said chances that Joe Mixon is cut or traded after Nick Chubb's signing. Zero. And I just wanted to bring this up, not to dismiss this question because, yeah, I agree. I think it's zero. But to point out that Joe Mixon has spoken really highly of Nick Chub in the past, they came out in the exact same class. I think like game recognizes game. And in a perfect world where Nick Chubb is feeling healthier this year,
Starting point is 00:16:17 those two guys are going to have a ton of fun together, I believe. Yeah, well, I mean, the name first down punts probably harkens to some of those Brian Hoyer Texans era. And so, like, I understand where the proficiency for negativity could come from. But yeah, I think I wrote slim and none on my notes because, yeah, they're both going to be fun. No, there's no, also, no matter how good Chub looks in training camp, I don't think you're going to just blindly have... faith that he is your main guy. My great thing I think for both of them is they're just a backup
Starting point is 00:16:49 plan for each other. Clearly, Chubb is going to be the backup. But like if Mixen misses a game, then you have Chubb waiting. Yeah, it's a, it's a one-two punch at times too. If that serves to be helpful, you know, you're not giving such a heavy workload on either one of those players. If you can work them in tandem a little bit more. But Joe Mixon, other than when he was hurt, he like carried that offense many weeks and it looks excellent. Looks like he's aging in reverse. I hope the same for Nick Chubb because when he's on, he is such a special player. Yeah. And they also drafted the also a good person who makes people around him better. Yes, CJ Stroud said at first he didn't recognize Nick Chub when he saw him in the locker room. And then he got a little starstruck because like,
Starting point is 00:17:37 I used to watch Nick Chub and he's just such a good player. And now you think like, oh yeah, it's true. Like Nick Chubb's not that old. He's only been. the NFL, what, eight or nine years. But within those eight or nine years, C.J. Stroud was literally in high school, you know, watching them like just rack up big numbers. Higher number this year, Miles Garrett Sachs, Patrick, or Jamar Chase touchdowns? The safer pick is Garrett at Sacks because, you know, he's he's done that consistently, consistently more longer, but Jamar had 17 touchdowns last season. So that would eclipse any Garrett season, but Miles average is 14.9. So the safe pick is going to be Miles second.
Starting point is 00:18:14 Garrett is the first player in NFL history to have more than 14 sacks in four straight seasons. I think he's still at his peak, so I'll go Garrett. Yeah. Close enough to. Honestly, my first instinct was, of course, it's Jamar Chase touchdowns watching the stat line from last year. But then you convince me, Patrick, because the averages really kind of work in Miles Garrett's
Starting point is 00:18:36 favor, frankly. But, you know, Jamar does play the Ravens twice, so he could have 16 touchdowns in the game. Or Andre Yoshibos could score like, you know, 15 touchdowns this year if he keeps his rate up of scoring touchdowns per catch. Do run heavy offenses takeover in 2025? This is from stage eight final boss. Great name.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Or did we see a high water mark of the run heavy offenses last season? Hmm. I mean, I think, I don't think that this is a cycle that's by any means over. Once the run game, first, okay. first it was the guards right first the guards got bigger okay then the run game started ascending across the league uh and even before that defenses got lighter to counter the passing game and then the guards got bigger and then the run game got more consistent and and started to pop then the outliers started to pop the run game which increased the market for running backs and now we're seeing sort of
Starting point is 00:19:34 the the mean i think the mean years of what this cycle is going to be what will happen next is then the tight ends are going to start working in more 12 personnel to make the run run game then even more effective and then to get heavier. Definitely seeing that. And then you're going to see the defenses get bigger to counter. You're going to see more hybrid safetys. You're going to see more hybrid linebackers. And then all of a sudden, something's going to come along that snaps all of us back to 2017 and we start all over again. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. I think, right, it's more of a reflection of the players in respective systems. And because as as information sharing becomes more ubiquitous, right? And more people are working.
Starting point is 00:20:12 off the same bits of like provable data. Teams and coaches are adjusting their usage to the skill set. And like we had seven guys carry the ball 300 or more times last season. And all but two of them have previously done it. Right. It was the first time for Bijan. It was the first time for Kyron Williams. And like Sequin, Derek Henry, Josh Jacobs, Jonathan Taylor.
Starting point is 00:20:37 If those guys are healthy, they're going to carry the ball a lot. And so like it's not like 2004 when Dominic Williams was carrying the ball. 300 times. Like, if you don't have one of those guys, then I doubt a team is going to devote significant resources to that style of play. Because, like, why? Like, your skills are probably aligned elsewhere. And so I don't know, like Jordan said, the cycle's going to come back, but I think it's more related to the personnel. Like, Ashton Genti may see the Raiders carries go up, but I don't know how much it changes league-wide. Shout out to Dominic Davis. Originally, uh, changing his name to Dominic Williams.
Starting point is 00:21:15 If you're like a fantasy head back in the odds, I was like, didn't you mean Dominic Davis? Oh, yeah. That was pre-name change. Yeah, I think this is the year after the trend really got supercharged in terms of run-heavy offenses. So no, it's the copycat league. We're actually the earliest that it could start, you know,
Starting point is 00:21:34 backsliding would be next year because I think we're going to overdose on it now. But I think it's, I think in terms of the overall league, the trend is going to continue. And that's the question for fantasy heads. Like who's that running back who's getting carries
Starting point is 00:21:47 that he shouldn't because of the trend. Yeah, you have to look at the outliers. And then also like the thing about sustaining this is that you have to be able to move people
Starting point is 00:21:56 to holistically shift the league physically move them off the line of scrimmage to shift the league fully into sustaining this for not just a couple of years of a cycle, but multiple generations
Starting point is 00:22:10 of players and whereas on the converse what you can always regardless of a wide range of skill set at one position and also of course keeping the quarterback uh i always say this around continuous continuous continuous continuous continued the quarterback the same the position relatively the same like you can space and scheme up the passing game in ways that yes you can sort of do that with the run game but it doesn't work if you can't consistently move people over years and years and years and years i like the question i like that it's getting deep. I know. We can do a whole episode on that. Good question. Maybe we will. Speaking of episodes, our next question is from a guy on blue sky, diarist bear, who asks, will
Starting point is 00:22:52 QB Island return and will it have more formal rules or be more like Lord of the Flies? Sneak diss in the question. It's not even a sneak dis. I take that personally. It did have rules. And Greg just shirked them. Like all rules, there's some wiggle room in in terms of legality, QB Island will definitely be back. I love this next question. It's from socks and boots. And yes,
Starting point is 00:23:19 we'll do a QBI Island episode, certainly before the season during training camp, I would say it will be the next time. Oh, I've been planning, Greg. I've been sowing the seeds of allyship with certain individuals. Wow.
Starting point is 00:23:30 We've already got machinations. Be afraid. Maybe we'll have to do an episode while Jordan's on vacation. I love this question. it was pretty deep. It basically said, is there any opponent with enough juice
Starting point is 00:23:47 to get the Texans out of the traditional West of a spot, assuming that the Texans win the AFC South this year and get the four seed? This is my kind of question. Now, the West of his spot is the early Saturday afternoon first playoff game, generally given to the teams that they think will have the lowest television ratings
Starting point is 00:24:11 for whatever reason was usually the Andy Dalton Bengals for many years, but the Texans have taken over and they own that spot now. It's always the Texans spot. And so the question is, is there anyone that they could even play in that game that would have enough juice
Starting point is 00:24:27 to get, to wrench the Texans out? And it's funny that you're just assuming that the Texans are a four seed too. That kind of cracks me up. What do you think? Well, clearly, right? the dudes, if it's Josh or Patrick or Lamar, right, or Joe, but then Bengals, Texans takes us right back to the OG West of us, right? So like, does that count? But does Borough, they are a national team now in a way that they weren't, then does Burroughs heat get them out of that spot? It should. To me, that's more of a Saturday night game. I agree. I think any of those quarterbacks, if they were stuck as a wild card, would wrench the Texans.
Starting point is 00:25:09 out of it and wrench any AFC South team out of it. The Texans, you know, Houston's a big spot. That's a football town. We got stars there, Nico and CJ. Beyonce was there.
Starting point is 00:25:19 Hey, he performed there. They were trying to kind of make the Texans were in that Christmas and Saturday game window with all the big wigs. So yes, I don't think the Texans are stuck there forever.
Starting point is 00:25:31 CJ Stroud's big time player. All right. Our second of the last question, will Trevor Lawrence or Baker Mayfield have a better season. I figured you guys would be the ones to ask this. I'm going to go Baker. I can't not, you know, like team Baker. I mean, the thing is I love that Trevor Lawrence is going to have Liam Cohen. I love the pairing of Liam Cohen and Grant Nuginski, who is in Minnesota most recently under Kevin O'Connell. I love Travis Hunter being there. I love Brian Thomas. I think that this has
Starting point is 00:26:08 the makings of an offense on the rise, but the bucks are already here. They're already here and they have to come out of the gate with their foot on the gas. And I think they will. And I think Baker is going to do that thing where he just takes on this like demon Baker. You know, he's like, he just becomes this like, uh, other version of himself on the field that's like getting in people's face masks and bringing everybody up with him. And then Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are so chill and get along with everybody. And then Baker's like screaming. And I just, I love the dynamics of that team. Yeah, there's there's a little Tyrese Halliburton in Baker's game where when it looks good, it's like, wow, this guy is untouchable. And when it looks weird, it's like, what's going on? What's,
Starting point is 00:26:48 what's the ultimate plan here? Like, why are you doing this? And for, for Trevor, like, we've seen when they're able to execute at a very high level, it's like, oh, okay, yeah, number one overall big. Like, I see, I see why all this happened. And there's, for me, like, better season dictates like division success and I feel like considering all the injury issues that the Colts are dealing with like I think if dimes does have to play five games that's one thing the Texans of course are their own problem but I think in the South with the Titans trying to figure things out like maybe the season long propositions are better in Duval so I'll say Trivall I do worry the offseason's been so long that I don't want to circle back
Starting point is 00:27:34 on my how good the bucks are going to be. Because I do think the expectations are going to be higher and can Baker be as consistent. You know, this is now going to be year three there with another coordinator. But ultimately, yeah, I'm going to, I'm not going to do the thing where I just start countering my own arguments because the offseason has been too long. I believe. I have to say, I have to say, like, one part of believing in the bucks and you're going to have to I'll send over the welcome basket for this as well. Like, you have to make sure you go. into the Baker-Mayfield experience, not really expecting total consistency everywhere. You expect it to be like an MDMA-laced roller coaster ride throughout the entire season.
Starting point is 00:28:14 And ultimately, you buy in because this guy wills his team to win. And he's got the like all heart and the personality and like the thing that brings people with him that I still have. I have always spoken up for Trevor Lawrence. Remember last season, I was the one who was like, get that coaching staff out of here. get him a better coaching staff. Get this guy on track. He could be great. I believe in Trevor Lawrence.
