Hi, I'm Weird Al Yankovic and you're listening to the Pantheon Network. And welcome back to No Filler. We are counting down our best of 2024. This is part three. And we're just going to jump right in, Q. That's how you do an intro, nice and quick.
Starting point is 00:01:47 people don't know what they're here for. They know who we are, right? Probably. They don't hear the same spiel every week. They might not ever know what your name is, dude. I didn't say, see, that's what happened to you. Go off script. Did I even say your name?
Starting point is 00:02:03 Probably not. You did. I did. You, yeah, you mentioned me directly as you spoke to me, but Travis. Thank you. This is our best of for the year. And this is part three, okay? And yes, you know what you're in for because here's the deal.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Here's the deal. Our best of is exactly luck are what you heards, and we've been doing it all year, you know? Yes. But we're bringing in our favorite songs that came out in 2024. Right. That is correct, Q. So we've also mentioned this every episode. We've got to repeat it again.
Starting point is 00:02:38 These are not in any particular order, at least not for me. On all the other best of episodes, Q, going back to whenever we first did these. I've like curated my picks in like the perfect order to end on like my favorite song of the year. But I just haven't haven't done that this year. So I'm just throwing them at you as I see fit. And dude, I'm bringing, I'm bringing five of my bests tonight. So strap in should be a doozie. I do, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:09 I got nothing but doozies, bro. Well, let's hear your first doozy. I think you're up first. What do you got for? How are you going to start us off? all right dude uh this band is i mean they're they're pretty hard to like pinpoint for sound the band is dummy there's not a lot out there can i just guess shoe gaze i mean maybe let's put this way dude their their album art and like their marketing materials and
Starting point is 00:03:37 stuff sure does look shoegazy but we'll see what happens well here's what they have to say for themselves on spotify crude experiments and bubble acoustics. Now, if that doesn't tell you exactly what you need. Tells me nothing. Exactly. Bubble acoustics. Bubble acoustics.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Okay. And that's bubble dash acoustics. Sure. We just got to let this song speak for itself. I really enjoy this album. I don't, again, like, there's not a lot out on this band. I don't know how long they've really been around. They don't have a lot out there.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Under fans also like I see Being Dead, which I think you brought last week. And if they're anything like Being Dead, I don't think. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because, I mean, being dead was like very experimental, fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, they're not. They're a little more honed in, I'd say. Well, I mean, they're bubble acoustic, so.
Starting point is 00:04:39 Right. What more do you need to? Yeah, right, one more. All right, here we go. This is dummy. The album is called Free Energy. And this song is called Psychic Battery. Very ethereal.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Very ethereal. Yeah, dude. That's the whole album. Dream poppy. Vocally at least. That's it, dude. You can't say Shookcase with this band, but you can say Dream Pop. No.
Starting point is 00:08:17 No, but right. But what I, I mean, I love the like the break beat, down tempo beat. Yes. Which is, you know, really cool. Yeah. Yeah. And that, you know. if we're going to name drop
Starting point is 00:08:28 Bowery Electric kind of mixed the break beat kind of stuff with the more sort of like ethereal vocals they were a little bit more kind of monotone with the vocal delivery whereas this is more like
Starting point is 00:08:43 you know a little bit more angelic with the vocals but yeah really great man if that's what this record's like I get that queued up right now dude on my do it dude yeah it's a great
Starting point is 00:08:56 playlist. Really really good. Yeah, that's great. Their album art does not convey the sound that they produce, Q. You can't judge a book by its cover. And a name like dummy, there's nothing dumb about that. Nothing. Good stuff, man.
Starting point is 00:09:16 So I was looking at that, thinking that that was their discography. I was like, they put out a record every year since 2009. Yeah, I found my way into StereoGum's wiki page. and I was looking at their album of the year list and I just got distracted, dude. Do you know, they named Merriwether Post Pavilion and is their album in the year for 2009? Man, that album was like the indie darling, you know, that year.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Yeah, sure it was, man. I mean, look at the... That's a wild list, man, if you think about it, Animal Collective, 2009, Kanye West 2010. Wow, dude, good on Animal Collective. Maybe Studio Gamm was more indie forward like every other music blog back in the day. Back in 2009, dude, that's when we had new dust.
Starting point is 00:10:02 Yeah, good times. Anyways, not everyone can see my screen like you can. No, no. Let's move on, brother. All right. Let's pass it on to you. What did you got? I've got an excellent follow-up to that, Q.
Starting point is 00:10:14 So, this is a band I recently stumbled upon. They put out an EP, and when I say recently, Thank you. I mean recently. They put out this record in November, November 15th. So a little peek behind the curtain. It's November 22nd on the night of recording. So, you know, I've been listening to this for a little over a week, a little under a week, I guess. Their name is Residence Club.
Starting point is 00:10:44 And they are really, really interesting, dude. Like, they are, I don't know what to describe them. So we're just going to let the music play for them. for itself here. They are a Australian band. Born out of a combination
Starting point is 00:11:00 of good mates and diverse musical inspirations. They put out a little four-track EP called Satellite and I'm going to play the title track. So here we go. Again, this band is called
Starting point is 00:11:13 Residence Club. This song is called Satellite. Yeah, dude, that's right up my alley, man. I wish I knew more about the origins of that style of guitar. Most bands that that, like, lean into that style of guitar, I'm into it, dude. Like, Yacht Club, I don't know, dude. Freaking Jurassic Shark, bands like that.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Yeah. Even, I mean, even Balkans. I don't know. Do you know what I'm talking about? It's like jangly. Yeah, it's jangly for sure. Surf rock origins. Yeah, there's a little.
Starting point is 00:15:07 little bit of surf in there. There's some jangleness to it. But like a lot of times, you know, surf has and I guess, yeah, yeah, I think let's stick with that surf and jangle. I think and jangle pop kind of has that sound. But then, you know, there's, there's some reverb thrown in there and a little bit of delay. That's like the surf kind of stuff. But yeah, very little to no distortion. There's maybe some fuzz sometimes. But yeah, so I don't know if I mentioned this before, but they're from Perth, Australia. So, you know, Perth is known for their music scene. That's where Tame and Paul is from.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Yep. So, yeah, there you go. Check out their new EP satellite. That was the name of that track as well. So again, that band was called Residence Club. And what do we do? I feel like we've been nice and soft. Q, my first two picks.
Starting point is 00:16:01 What are we going to do next? All right, dude. this band I brought to one of our watches a few months back. Wishy is the band name. I believe this is their debut full length. The album is called Triple Seven. And this is just a really great example of, I guess, next generation, shoegaze. You know, it's mixed in with like...
Starting point is 00:16:29 Would you call it? New gaze, Q. I won't. I refuse. That's what they call it, man. Do they really? Like, is it in you? Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Yeah, yeah. Is it really? It's kind of like new metal. I mean, it could be tongue and cheek, but yeah. What I love about this band is that they blend it so well with like third wave emo, which is our wheelhouse, dude. We grew up with that stuff. I mean, look, dude, we've talked about this before. You can combine the elements of shoe gaze with literally any genre.
Starting point is 00:17:01 And it works. Yeah. Yeah. And you know what, dude, it just, and we talk about this a lot on this podcast, but it just makes me so happy that, that Midwestern emo, third wave emo sound is, it's got a hold on the next generation of musicians, dude. It's back. Because our generation is doing it right, man. We're playing, we're playing that stuff for our kids, you know? Think about it. If you grew up with third wave emo, like you could be approaching 50 right now. possibly older.
Starting point is 00:17:35 Third wave. Yeah. Midwestern. And we, you know, we started pretty young with when we started listening to, because let me tell you this, man. My kids,
Starting point is 00:17:45 too. He ain't planning no bands. No. But, you know, you could have had him a long time ago, dude. So think about it. A lot of kids. I'm 37.
Starting point is 00:17:54 Yeah, exactly. Like, so if you, if you guys had him when you were just married, he'd be picking up some sticks right now, probably. You're right, man. Yeah. I don't remember what song I brought from this album for The Whatcha.
Starting point is 00:18:10 But I think we played two songs from the album on that episode. I think we faded out with Triple Seven, which is the title track on the record, which features the female vocalist in the group heavily. She's like the main singer on that one. Oh, yes. Okay. I remember this. Yes. I remember this album art really good. What I like about this group is how different they are from track to track. It's very coherent. I'm not, you know, but I love when groups, I don't know, have enough respect for each other. They're letting each other shine, which is what I love. And yeah, it's just a solid album for like a debut. Yeah, I love it, dude.
Starting point is 00:18:50 Here we go. All right, this is track four off the record. And this was, it was really hard for me to narrow down which one to do for the best of. But here we go. This is, again, Wishy. The album is called Triple Sussie. seven, this song is called game. Yeah, this is what I like about even, you know, all the bands that are doing the
Starting point is 00:21:54 Grunge Revival too. I don't know, it's just a good blend of, of a lot of different things, which is awesome. It's awesome, dude. You get hints of stuff, you know, like you get a little bit of, a little bit of emo, you get a little bit of that. There's the wall of sound in that, like, their vocals are just blended in so well with that distortion, right? Like it's all just right there coming at you.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Yeah. There's almost no distinction between their voices and the guitar distortion. It's really cool. Yeah, it's kind of interesting. Like, you know, you always think about how, like, you know, when you think of the 80s, you think of a very distinct sound of the 80s, right? 90s, distinct rock sound at least. 2000s, like you start to get, you know, maybe the emo sound,
Starting point is 00:22:43 but then you've got new metal, you know, you've got garage rock, stuff like that, right? Let's not forget chill wave, Tram. Chill wave, sure. But I feel like nowadays, there's so many great indie rock bands out there putting out tunes right now. And it's just really interesting blend of a bunch of different eras and genres, you know, it's really cool. It is cool, dude, yeah. I just, I remember not too long ago, Traff, feeling like like, like, legitimate, just rock was dead?
Starting point is 00:23:19 Yeah. Or like, at least like, you know, legit bands playing actual instruments. And it's coming back, dude. The next generation is bringing it back. Yeah. I agree with that. Yeah, man. I think this is a contender for my favorite album of the year, one of them, for sure.
Starting point is 00:23:39 It's just a fun record. It's just, it's solid, man. Really great. And look at all, dude, look at all these, look at all these songs that I've added to my playlist as potentials. Literally the majority of the album I thought about bringing today. That's how good it is. Yeah, I had a similar album, dude, where I could not decide which song to play. Yeah, I did.
Starting point is 00:24:05 And I'm going to play one of them right now, did. Awesome. Yeah, what you got? Okay, so not the first time of this record or this, yeah, this record, a show. on the on the pod. I brought a couple of tracks from this record, actually. I'm one of our watcher heards because I snuck in another track for the outro. So right off the bat, dude, I removed two tracks from the running because, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:27 I don't want to have a repeat on here. But the whole record is amazing. It's this group called Cola. And kind of like we were just talking about, I mean, this album is more kind of your just post-punk, very, very. guitar-driven, excellent bass player or two. But, man, am I a sucker for three pieces? We've talked about this before.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Yeah, man, it's our favorite. Yeah, this guy is a great vocalist and lyricist. And I went back and forth on so many of these tracks and I want you to bring. But the one that I had on my playlist, the longest is the one that I should stick with because there was a reason I threw it on there in the first place and the reason I stuck for it for so long.
Starting point is 00:25:11 going with game from Wishy, dude, the same reason. So we're going to let this one play out a little bit because it has this nice buildup and this nice release that happens a little bit toward the end. But here you go. Again, this band is called Cola.
Starting point is 00:25:25 The record is called The Gloss. This song is called Pulling Quotes. That's how it starts to the rain. Really good, man. Really like his voice. It was very, um, I don't know, a little bit of new wave, some, like the, like early talking heads, maybe. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:59 I mean, take away David Byrd's wacky vocals. But yeah, I mean, some of that, yeah, kind of just straightforward, guitar driven. The bass, the bass on the guitar player are perfectly in sync on this record. And I think the singer is also a guitar player. But, man, what I love about this record and why it was so hard for me to pick is, that that was more of a, like, kind of a softer song. But, like, they have some very, like, punk-forward kind of songs as well. Nice.
Starting point is 00:30:30 Very, like, intense drums and vocals and stuff. So, like, you know, it's a very wide-ranging record, but it's very consistent, and it's just a fucking solid record, man. But, yeah, dude, what a time to be alive, you know, for good indie rock. You know? We can't, we can't say it enough, man. No. We cannot say it enough.
Starting point is 00:30:55 And that's why, that's why possibly all the picks tonight are going to be more rock forward, dude, because, you know, we listen to a lot of electronic music in these, in these, around, you know, around these parts. But I don't, I don't have any, I don't have anything of a rock today, dude. So I'll buckle up. I mean, I think, I think same, dude. I think we're in the same boat. Speaking of, you know what? All right. there's no better time than now to play a Jack White song.
Starting point is 00:31:25 You know what I'm saying? All right, dude. I was hoping he'd show up on our best of. For those of you who don't know, Jack White dropped a brand new record this year. No name is what it's called. It doesn't have a name. But man, dude, have you given this album a whole? Wouldn't that make it a self-titled record?
Starting point is 00:31:47 I mean, no. I guess not. I guess not. I mean, if you go, if you look anywhere and search, you know, Jack White, look further at the discography. It's called no name. I guess the name of the record is called no name. Okay. I guess it's called no name, yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:05 All right. Travis, have you listened to this album all the way through? I have not. Okay. I'm really hoping you haven't heard this one, dude. I haven't because the only one I've heard is the one you played for me. Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:32:16 Okay. earlier. So I haven't really listened to a lot of his solo stuff, you know? Like I'm obviously, wow, dude, if you click on Jack White, it just brings up White Stripes albums under his scarf. I saw that, dude. I saw that. That must be something, some kind of weird record label thing, but that's bizarre, dude. They should separate that. Dude. And, uh, raconteurs. That's, wow. I mean, maybe he's like, dude, just throw it all under me. Good on you, Jack White? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:32:48 I guess. Come on, dude. Anyways, I'm more familiar with White Stripes. Me too. The White Stripes side of Jack White's career. But this No Name album just feels like a solid White Stripes album. You know, he's going back to his roots. And it's just a fun time, dude.
Starting point is 00:33:08 I like having fun. I brought It's Rough on Rats, if you're asking. I brought that track to a few what you're, ago. And we're just going to play the next track off the album, dude. It's a freaking blasty blast. Get ready, dude. Here we go. This is Archbishop Harold Holmes. You got family trouble, man trouble, woman trouble, no nice to all in Cherokee. Listen to me, I spring seven, so keep this all to yourself and take someone else's love for yourself. Nobody else like him, dude.
Starting point is 00:35:55 So awesome. Dude, speaking of David Byrne, That's kind of sounded like once in a lifetime. Just, you know, just the way that David Byrne would deliver his words and like kind of that chaotic kind of spoken word with the cadence and stuff kind of, you know, all over the map. Well, here's the thing. That wasn't Jack White, dude. That was Harold Holmes. Okay. Oh, you're right, you're right.
Starting point is 00:36:19 That was, he was straight up in the pulpit. Yes. Preaching it. It was like if David Burns was a, or David Byrne was a preacher. But I love. Yeah. I love that he threw in the lyrics I love. He goes, don't be selfish and keep this all to yourself.
Starting point is 00:36:33 And don't eat shellfish. Yeah, I love it. Which is one of those like, is just like, why? Yeah, yeah. Why is that a thing that God cares about? Right. Yeah. I mean, this is this is classic, like you said, you know, this is the kind of the kind of songs he would write for white stripes back in the day.
Starting point is 00:36:51 Yeah. Same with the guitar. You know, like you have no faith in Madison. Remember that song? Yeah, exactly, dude. That's exactly what came in mind for me. Exactly. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:01 Love it. Awesome, dude. I mean, there's, dude, whatever, whatever year Jack White puts out a record is a great year for rock music, you know? Exactly. He's just so awesome. Well, dude, I feel like we've been just, and it's just perfectly in sync tonight, dude, because I've got a great, perfect follow-up for that. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:37:25 Okay, so this band is. They are no strangers to no filler. Idols put out a new record this year, Q. Did you know? I have not listened to it. I was aware of it, I haven't listened to it yet. And did you know, he probably didn't, that they put out a single that was also on the record.
Starting point is 00:37:46 It was a collaboration with LCD sound system. Who is back in the runnings, John? He was off the map for a while, but he's back. I haven't listened to his new stuff either, But that's exciting. There you go, dude. He showed up on the idols record. So here we go.
Starting point is 00:38:03 Idols, man, one of the most, like, aggressive, like unique, I think rock bands to come out in the last decade. They showed up on our best of for the year that they put out ultra mono. So it would have been 2020. Made that record, dude. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. This song is just as awesome. And I feel like the lyrics are just as awesome. I feel like the lyrics are just as in your face as Jack White's lyrics.
Starting point is 00:38:31 So here we go. This is idols with LCD sound system. This song is called dancer. A lot of bands like idols, dude. And I want to know what part of that was LCD sound system. I think he's the background vocalist and probably some of the instrumentation and stuff. But there's like, there's a, during the chorus at least, there's this other line being sung. Yeah, my guess
Starting point is 00:41:34 Like a back and forth kind of thing Yeah He's kind of singing this little He's got this bed of a This very soft kind of like Almost like 50s 60s Sounded vocal Line delivery
Starting point is 00:41:47 Like it sounds like Motown or something like that In the background Yeah really cool But yeah dope dude So again that was the titles That song was called dancers Feetring LCD sound system Off of their
Starting point is 00:41:59 New Record Tank T-A-N-G-K All right, Q how do you top Jack White and idols All right, here's what's happening, dude. I wasn't going to bring them tonight, but let's mellow it out here, dude.
Starting point is 00:42:16 Okay. Okay. I brought a song from this group on one of our watches, a song from theirs, a song from way back in 1995. Okay. The group is called the Soft
Starting point is 00:42:32 And I teased Oh, yeah. That they have got back together and they dropped an album, their first album, I think like 16 years or something. And man, dude, I didn't know anything about this group until,
Starting point is 00:42:48 I think I mentioned this. Like, it was one of those like, how did I not ever hear about this group? The only reason I knew about them is because they dropped a new album and that album, you know, found its way on my news feed
Starting point is 00:42:59 from a pitchfork review of it. But man, this is just like a, it's just a solid, just really pretty soft acoustic group, pretty harmonies. I mentioned to me, are in the very similar vein as Kings of Convenience. And this is just more of the same from what they were doing in the 90s. And with your blessing job, I want to play two songs. Let's do it. Maybe I'll just play one. And I'll let you go and listen to it yourself.
Starting point is 00:43:30 You know what I'm going to bring? The first album on the record. The first song on the record. The first song on the record. I'm going to play the first album on the record, dude. What's cool about this song is just, I like to hear, I like to, like the first track on an album from a band that hasn't released music. You know, in like over a decade. It's just always special to me.
Starting point is 00:43:56 You talk about that for the Cure single. The Cure, yeah. And I don't know if that was. actually going to be the first track on the Curis. But it was their first single, though. So, like, it was the first time people were hearing new music for them in a long time. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:44:07 Yeah. And I think the, I think the name of the song is very fitting. The subject of the song is very fitting for a band that hasn't played together in so long. So anyways, the album is called The Bed I Made. The band, again, is called The Softies. And this song is called Go Back in Time. It wasn't. from everything to...
Starting point is 00:45:36 That was just the perfect pallet cleanser after Jack White. That's why I wanted to play it, dude. I feel like I was a good, good little intermission, you know. Yeah. Beautiful vocals. I love it, man. Can I please, please have a Kings of Convenience cover album. Mm.
Starting point is 00:47:29 Where Kings of Convenience are playing softies songs, please? Oh, yeah. Or the other way around. because I just think it's just I'm about to fucking blow your mind you what if they did a collaboration I mean come on quiet as the new loud
Starting point is 00:47:42 How do we make that happen Who do we got to talk to to To make that happen I mean we should just Let's just reach out to someone dude Can I play another song from the record trip Fine Yes
Starting point is 00:47:55 You know that was a nice short little A short little clip Yeah that's the thing All their songs are Less than three minutes long dude This is the second song on the record I love it. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:48:05 It's called I Said What I Said. I have to play the whole song, dude. Love it. Gorgeous. Dude. Simon a Garfuckle. Crosby stills, nah. Kings of convenience.
Starting point is 00:50:39 Yeah, man. The softies. In terms of like just perfect harmony. Yeah, dude. Just, I mean, everything that they do compliments. You know, they compliment themselves so well. Dude, I was reading the bio, the Spotify bio, and this last sentence is perfect. Through their perfectly paired harmonies and telepathic playing, they navigate the present, past and future, offering a poignant continuation of their musical legacy, resonating like time spent with an old friend who knows you best.
Starting point is 00:51:11 That is what this album is, dude. It's exactly that. That's great, man. That would be an excellent, excellent. show to see live if you get a chance, huh? Absolutely. Anyways, Jeff, are we going to 1.80 yet? Yes. Yep.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Hard not to after that. All right. What, man, where do I go? Where do I go, dude? Because I got two more tracks. Well, I guess three more. Spoiler alert. Okay.
Starting point is 00:51:42 We are going to switch it up, but we're going to keep it pretty softer, I guess. but what you know not really so um i was really excited when this group put out on a new record this is highly anticipated from me so you may remember this group they're called trauma ray and they put out a little EP a little self-titled EP a few years back and then they've dropped some singles here and there but they are Fort Worth based grunge revile band dude and they do it really really well and it's kind of it's kind of grunge with dream pop shoegaze I don't even want to let's drop the dream pop it's it's it's it's grunge and
Starting point is 00:52:31 shoegays so grunge gaze I guess if you want to call it that but they just dropped a new record back in October they're four did I say Fort Worth based already because I'm you did you did that means that means I can likely catch him alive if I look hard enough So here you go. We're going to play the first track off the record. This song is awesome. Here we go. Again, this band is called Trauma Ray. This song is called Imbar. Vocals. I love the drums, dude. Just great, dude, all around. I mean, just another example of, I mean, this awesome research and, like, resurgence and, you know, just solid grunge. Yeah, it's like the grunge guitar sound with the alt rock heavy, heavier alt rock sound. Because, you know, if you want to get technical grunge is what, I hand, like two or three bands, right?
Starting point is 00:56:35 If you want to get into that debate. So they're not, you know, grunge. Let's not even go down that road. You just did. I try. Yeah, I backed away. slowly but like yeah it's the grunge sound there i don't care come at me uh i don't think anyone's coming at you dude
Starting point is 00:56:55 probably not those guys i think there's like 10 people that listen to us now so nah we got more than that you got at least three but there's something about that that guitar tone and that those those guitar those chord progressions it just feels like an old friend dude i've heard those guitar sounds my whole life, dude, and it's just great to hear bands making music like this again. I felt, you know what, it's funny, I felt that way about the drumbeat. Maybe that's just because I'm a drummer. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:27 But I've felt that style of drumming, and it's straight out of the 90s, dude. It's a warm blanket, man. Yeah. Love it. I'm here for it. Trauma ray. Amber. The record is called, once ago?
Starting point is 00:57:43 I don't think I said it earlier. The record is called Chameleon. just came out in October. It's a solid, solid record. All right, Q. I think I know what your next pick is. You sure do, brother. And I think we brought this name up
Starting point is 00:58:00 in our last best of because I think I was taking a sneak peek at your screen. And I noticed you brought a song from this guy on your list. M.J. Linderman. That's right. His album, Manning Fireworks, I just freaking catapulted this guy, dude, into the indie sphere. Absolutely, dude.
Starting point is 00:58:22 He is an indie darling right now for sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'm going to give a shout out real quick to a listener. So I put out a call to our listeners on Instagram. I finally did an Instagram post, Q. Did you know that? It wasn't a post. It was a story.
Starting point is 00:58:41 But a couple of, well, one in particular, one, one listener, reached out and just tagged this randomly in a story he was well we'll talk about him later so then I was like you know what I'm gonna I've got the app pulled up might as well make a story real quick and so I put a call out I said you know send us your best of 24 and we'll you know we'll give you a shout out and so we got a couple of mentions or I mean I don't even know what the terminology is got a couple of messages one of them was from a listener who goes by the name Aisha and she said that M.J. Linderman Manning Fireworks, that's all she said. So I'm going to assume she's talking about the record as a whole.
Starting point is 00:59:26 She could also be talking about the track because there is a track on the record of the same name. But shout out to Aisha. Thanks for listening and sending your pick to us. So yeah, clearly this record is a favorite of many. because that was one of her picks as well. And both you and I both picked a track for this record. So we're going to play two tracks because I have a track. You have a different track. What more to be said, dude?
Starting point is 00:59:55 He's such a phenomenal songwriter. Yeah, it's, it's... His lyrics are amazing. Yeah, dude. It's just something about it, dude. And it's got a little bit of country twang to it. Oh, yeah. I'm surprised that I'm liking it.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Well, what's great is we picked two different songs from album and yeah the song i'm bringing is track two you're bringing i believe track four so i'm bringing down the lunch yeah yeah yeah i'm bringing joker lips so here we go all right uh again mj linderman manning fireworks this song is called joker lips dude right off the rip on this song dude just gets me just gets me it's just a phenomenal record man like singer songwriters like this don't Don't come around often, dude. You know? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:05 I don't know what to say, man. You know? Yeah, it's hard to say anything, but just, you know, shower praise upon him. Speaking of showers. Check out the lyrics. But anyway, I like how he says, please don't laugh. Only half of what I said was a joke. But he doesn't tell us which half was the joke.
Starting point is 01:03:28 So, like, when you go back and look at the lyrics, it's like, well, we can only hope the lyrics dude are just I mean they're just but they're very they're very raw personal and like relatable relatable I mean they really make you think and I'm not saying that just in a joking way
Starting point is 01:03:47 track dude because this next track is deep well anyway my favorite line I think is Kalua shooter DUI Scooter I mean is he saying that he was taking shots of Kaluah And then he jumped on a scooter and got a DUI. I really hope that's what happened.
Starting point is 01:04:06 Possibly. Yeah. It's a great play on words a little bit and like just kind of clever turn of phrase and stuff. Yeah, exactly. He's just a great, great, smart, clever lyricist. Well, let's play, let's play Whistrarch. Oh, yeah. Let's play Whistrow.
Starting point is 01:04:24 I can't see that. Rist watch. That is tough. wrist watch, dude. There's an R in there, dude. There is. It's great. Great song.
Starting point is 01:04:37 Good those lyrics pulled up, dude. Let's do it. These are great lyrics. All right, here we go. I was just caught. I couldn't figure out what to say, man, because it's just phenomenal. It's just phenomenal. This could be best record of the year.
Starting point is 01:08:12 It's up there, dude. Could be. Can we give a shout-out to the backing band? Yeah, man. Really good. I was, I'm, I'm. reminded of Wilco
Starting point is 01:08:24 Jeff Tweedy same with the lyricism Folk Americana yeah they're dude there's just a just a whisper of Seeley Dan
Starting point is 01:08:35 just a whisper okay you know I mean think Charlie free like Pretzalogic yeah some of those songs from Prezal Logic
Starting point is 01:08:45 for sure and dude the lyricism is kind of Donald Fagan-ish you know like kind of quirky Yeah, definitely clever lines that kind of make you go,
Starting point is 01:08:56 hmm, you know. For sure, yeah. I love this. I love the lyrics, dude. I got a beach home in Buffalo and a wristwatch that's a compass and a cell phone. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:07 And a wristwatch that tells me you're all alone. Yeah. Yeah, you can, I know, dude. You can find out so much about the world around you just by looking at your freaking Apple watch. But, I mean,
Starting point is 01:09:21 I think we're trying to say, perhaps a wristwatch that tells me you're all alone. He could be looking at, you know, you can look at, you ever do the find my or like the track my cell phone kind of thing? Families do it to kind of like keep tabs on each other. He could be looking at his friend or a lover or a parent or something like that and seeing that they're all alone in their home or something like that. he's like his smart watch is telling him that you know this person that he likes he's all alone well he says at the end that he's the one that's that's on his own I'm on my own yeah based on the other west ride you know what dude he's got a pocket knife on that thing too that's pretty dope
Starting point is 01:10:01 and I don't know what my iPhone does not have a pocket knife so I don't know what the fuck but yeah that's it's just amazing dude I don't know what the fuck the hymn dome is um I mean let's look it up crack me up I'm probably yeah we're I'm pretty sure, dude, if you type in Hymbo Dome, there's results about MJ Linderman, so I think he made it up. Yeah, what the hell is Hymodom? Let's find out. Yeah, that's the top, the top. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:27 But that's what I'm talking about, dude. Like, I think there's, like, like, Steely Dan and some of their lyrics, they've just put together a couple of words just to make something up. Just to. I mean, he capitalized the words and the lyrics, dude. He did. But I think he made that up, dude. He coined that term. Yeah, the first comment on this Reddit post this is, what the fuck is the Hymbo Dome?
Starting point is 01:10:52 This person says, the Hymodome, beyond being a hilarious take on Hippodrome, which I don't know what that is, is a stand-in for this monolithic idea of possessions as armor, of ignorance fashioned as expertise. That's what I'm saying. By the time he gets to the final reminder of his loneliness, Linderman has managed to sketch a brief but poignant character study, all centered around the shiny, impenetrable technology we don on our wrists. Yeah. He's talking about, yeah, how we're surrounded by all this, all this, these gadgets, you know. He's got a cell phone that's a compass, a wristwatch. And he's all alone.
Starting point is 01:11:33 Well, he's got a wristwatch that's a fucking compass and a cell phone. And a pocket knife and a megaphone. And he's all alone, dude. He's got a beach house and Buffalo. but it's it's worth nothing dude it's worth nothing if you don't get anybody to spend that time with it's great man fuck and I gotta follow that up
Starting point is 01:11:52 because I don't have to do you don't have to that's true maybe we ended at that dude because that's a phenomenal let's end it at that we got to bring we brought our songs we're all good let's not yeah and then I'll save this one for next week so yeah that's a good way to close us out
Starting point is 01:12:11 so that was MJ Linderman off of his record Manning Fireworks. All right, so we got one more episode for the year. We will close out our best of, our final 10, possibly more if one of us decides to play two tracks. I'm looking at you, Q. And it's possible that we have another crossover, which opens it up for a bonus track potentially.
Starting point is 01:12:37 All right, so one more shout out to another listener, So again, I kind of talked about this fella. I'll just give his, I'm not going to say your last name. On air, as they used to say in the radio days. But Kevin, I know you're listening. Thanks for reaching out. He gave us a shout out a few weeks back. Actually, the funny thing is Q, he was listening to the Softies and the Sundays edition, What You heard.
Starting point is 01:13:07 So there you go. and he was specifically calling us out playing sunshine smile here he says now here's an by adorable get ready to get ready to
Starting point is 01:13:19 I'm ready to beam dude I'm ready to beam he says the absolute best for finding forgotten 90s guitar music you guys rule
Starting point is 01:13:30 blew my mind I hadn't heard sunshine smile in like 18 years Well, that's what we love to hear, dude. What I love about that is I just, I picked a random band name from a list of groups that were under this umbrella of bands from a certain era and a certain part of England. And they fit under that. And I wish my memory was good enough to remember more about where I found him.
Starting point is 01:14:06 But it was on a wiki page under like just like the side panel. And they were in there. I was like, what kind of band name is adorable? And I looked it up. I found that one song off that random compilation record on Spotify. Yeah, you want to talk about it was a great track, man. It really was really good. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:14:24 Talk about obscure. So really cool that someone, that that song, you know, brought one of our listeners back to, you know, blast from the past for them. Really cool. Yeah, dude. That's what, that's what we love doing around here. All right, so he actually responded back to my call for picks, and he actually was going to suggest a song that we played on last month's Watcha.
Starting point is 01:14:49 So we did play this track. It just didn't make it to my best of because I'm waiting for the record to come out next year. So chances are Cloak Room's new record when they put it out is probably going to make it to next year's best of. So I didn't want to, you know, I did this last. year when I played the real estate song that they dropped a single in 23 and then the whole record came out in 24. Daniel, I think, was the record. The song was Water Underground. Remember that?
Starting point is 01:15:20 Fantastic song. Probably would have showed up on my end of year this year, but I already played it last year. It was very different from their previous stuff. Kevin, because you brought this as your, one of your favorite tracks from this year, going to play it as our outro because it's just a phenomenal song dude and i can't wait till the new record comes out they haven't dropped a date yet but they promised it would come out in 2025 it's like well you got a whole view to do it so that's not much of a promise but i think that's because they've been kind of sitting on this one for a couple of years now a few years so cloakroom unbelonging
