The music podcast dedicated to sharing the often overlooked hidden gyms that fill the space between
the singles on our favorite records. My name is Quentin. Got my brother,
Travis with me as always, and this is our sidetrack for the week.
We're wrapping up our Radioheadathon.
And we're just going to play more Radiohead to finish this off.
Dude, that was a lot.
That was a fucking blast last week with Nathan, man.
Yeah, it had probably been close to a decade since I saw him, spoke with them.
So, yeah, man, it was just reminded me of the good times, dude.
He's a great guy.
But yeah, I feel like we did this with the spoon, our spoon apelousa.
You know, our last spoon album that we covered the sidetrack the following week was another spoon song.
So, you know, it's just we got to put the bow on top of this gift, you know what I mean?
Oh, yeah.
Ooh, I like that.
So, yeah, I figured we should just cover disc two.
for In Rainbows, which we kind of talked about this last week, but I feel like we should cover it.
You know, I feel like we should talk about it a little bit more.
Radiohead was maybe the first band to do the whole pay what you want thing, you know?
Like, all right, here's an album.
If you want to get it for free, here's the download link.
You know, if you want to throw us some bones, we'll take it.
that's pretty much commonplace now, you know?
Like there's so many bands that are on band camp, you know,
and other kind of other platforms where you can pay what you want to get the MP3s, you know.
Yeah, I feel like it's definitely commonplace for indie bands or upcoming bands.
But I feel like it's not so commonplace for really well-established acts.
like the only thing that comes to mind is when you two
put that album that they really on everybody's iTunes account for free
you remember that and everybody got mad about it
yeah
um luckily I'm not uh I'm not an Apple user so I didn't have to deal with that
bullshit yeah I remember I remember it and I remember you know
having to go through the process to remove it because I didn't want it
yeah but I mean you know for for me it's not surprising
that a well-established band that, you know, is making good money with their tunes, you know,
it's not surprising that they're one of the first ones to think, to think this, you know, could
work out in their favor.
Well, what's interesting about the way that you, too, approached it, was that it coincided
with an Apple, really, like, an Apple product launch, you know?
So Apple obviously paid them a good chunk of money for this whole deal, right?
That's a good point.
Yeah.
Dude, and they like, you two just forced it on you, right?
Exactly.
That's what I'm saying.
Like, you had literally no choice.
Dude, fuck that, man.
Like, you know, it should have been a, it should have been a, fuck that.
You know, hey, next time you open up iTunes, you're going to get a little pop up that says,
hey, would you like to add this to your library?
Yes or no.
Yeah.
Easy.
Yeah.
And who knows, like, who knows whose idea it was to go that route?
I bet she it was Apple's idea.
Fucking, no, dude.
Well, I just, I'm just not a fan of Bono.
I just don't like the guy.
Let's just say it was Bono's idea.
Okay, we're going to do that.
So, disc two is what popped up.
So they released a box set.
I want to say it was in October of 2007, the same year that they released the album.
So when they first launched it, it was pay what you want and you get digital files, right?
And you can listen to In Rainbows.
And then they released the box that where I think it was $80 got you like a really nice, you know, hard copy.
And they had disc two, which were their outtakes, you know, the songs that didn't make it on the album.
And that's what we're going to cover today.
One of my favorite radiohead songs is on disc two of In Rainbows.
It's called Bangers and Mash.
And I don't know if I paid too much attention to this song before watching their basement tapes.
What about you?
Did you listen to Disc 2 in 2007?
Like, were you aware of it back then?
I got to be honest with you.
I don't know if I've listened to any of these songs besides maybe the ones that I heard on basement tapes.
Okay.
So you've heard bangers and mash through basement tapes.
Dude, here's why I love bangers and mash.
So, and we'll jump right into it.
I won't say too much about it.
But what I love about it is this is a two drum set.
song.
There's two drummers in this song.
And...
But by two drummers, you mean Phil Selway and another drummer?
Or just two Phil Selway, two Phil Selway drum tracks.
So I don't know how it was recorded.
But when you watch the basement tapes, fucking Tom York jumps behind the kid, dude.
Tom York is the other drummer in Bangers and Mash.
I love it.
I'm hoping that you can watch this with me because I know I'm sharing my screen with
you went through Skype.
Yeah, dude.
Fucking Tom works behind the kid.
And he's singing and playing drums,
which makes him better than me because I can't fucking do that, dude.
I've tried to sing a song.
Dude, I've tried to sing and play drums at the same time.
I can't fucking do it.
Well, dude, I can't play drums because I can't coordinate my bass,
my bass drum foot and my high head foot at the same time.
So you got me on that.
Yeah, you're preaching to the choir, man.
That took me so long to figure out.
Yeah, dude.
So we're going to play the live from the basement recordings.
And if you don't know what the fuck we're talking about, go back to last week's episode
on In Rainbows.
We kind of talk about it.
Yeah.
So here is bangers and mash in its entirety, live from the basement.
Dude.
Dude, nothing gives me greater joy than to see Tom York behind that kit, man.
Yeah.
We're definitely going to post the video.
on the show notes.
Dude, man,
what a fucking fun
live performance, dude.
So,
you saw them for this tour.
Did they not do this, dude?
I couldn't tell you off the top of my head.
Yeah,
you can't remember if he hop behind the kid.
No,
but let me look up the set list
because I'm curious now.
Okay, this version on
the basement tapes
way better.
than how you hear it on disc two.
Like all the respect in the world to Tom York, man.
You know, like, what is he fucking Phil Collins?
Yeah, he is.
Sure.
Yeah, good stuff.
If I saw them in 2008, then yes, they did play Bangers and Mash.
Okay.
But I don't remember it.
So, like, if you listen to the drumbeat, and again, it's Tom York and Philip
Selway playing.
Dude, I have no reason.
to doubt that it's Tom York on the kit on the recording.
I bet it is.
No, but like even in the recording, there's two drummers.
Like, this is a two drummer song.
That's what I'm saying.
Like, I bet you it's Tom York on the recording too.
Yeah, yeah.
But what I love about this song, man, is that it's a little bit more of a punk rock kind
of radio head, you know?
Yeah, dude.
And, dude, even watching Johnny Greenwood was fun.
in this
in this video
like he's just fucking rocking out dude
yeah so that's
by far my favorite song
on disc two of in rainbows
so yeah I figured it'd be a great way
to fucking round us out
you know that bow on top of the fucking gift
like you said yeah that's a great song
to finish up our radio head
and I feel like it's a it's a bit of a different
type of radio head song than what we
have covered so far. I would think maybe mix of mitosis is the closest one as far as like
heavy. Yeah, the more heavy stuff. Yeah. But more straightforward rock. And you can see how,
you know, this is one of the songs that they just couldn't find a good place for it,
uh, on in rainbows. It's a total, total B side, you know? Yeah. As far as the,
what a fucking B side, man. Like, this is when you know you're in a kick-ass band and like you got,
an overflow of songs for a record and like this is one of the ones you decide not to put on a record
yeah i know damn it's crazy but man let me tell you who i'd love to see cover this song just to bring
it all around town spoon dude i think they would destroy that song yeah it almost has a spoon vibe
to it you know i could oh my god totally see brad daniel yeah how do we make that happen
great question, man. I wish I had the answer to that question. Because that'd be great to hear that.
But anyway. All right. So this is a little quick and dirty side track.
Dude, quick and dirty just like the song, man. Just like the song. You know what?
No, I'm in the move for some bangers in my ass, dude. Yeah, dude. Let's go get something.
And dude, there's a kick-ass German pub in downtown written. You want to fucking charter or flight
come hang out here tonight.
Yeah, dude.
I'll be there in five hours.
I'm pretty sure they have bangers in mesh.
All right.
So next week, we're kind of, we've been kind of on the fence with what to cover next.
I think we landed on a good one.
Yeah.
You want to spill beans?
Let's spill beans.
Yeah.
I think we're going to cover a tribe called Quest.
Get some hip hop on this fucking podcast, dude
First hip hop
Review
Hell, yeah, dude
I listen to this album all the way through yesterday
It's fucking amazing, man
I love it
So good, dude
So we're gonna cover their 1991 release
The Low End Theory
Dude, I landed on at least five songs
That I wanted to cover, man
I don't know which ones are singles
But dude, it's a doozy
Yeah, so that's gonna do it for us
today. That's our sidetrack. We're finishing up our radioheadathon. I'm sure we'll circle back to
radiohead at some point. For our outro, I'm going to play another song from disc two. This is another
really great song. This is the final song on the album. It's called Four Minute Warning. And yeah,
I kind of just want this song to speak for itself.
It's just one of those like tear jerkers, man, like just with the lyrics and like the delivery of it.
It's four minutes, four seconds long, you know, so that's, I mean, that's why they called it that.
I think it's cool too.
It's like the last song in the album.
It's like, all right, four minute warning.
And that's the end of it.
So we're going to fade out with that song.
And again, that's going to do it for us.
today. We will shout at you next week. We're going to dive into some old school hip hop.
And until then, my name is Quentin. And my name is Travis.
I'll take care.
This is just a nightman.
Someone's going to breathe from the ball. Just like every bar stepping up there.
