With me as always is my brother Quentin. Q, how are you feeling today? Oh, that's, that's, That's right. Q is not here today. So here's what happened.
Starting point is 00:02:53 We recorded this episode last week, and when we went to put it together, Q's vocals were jacked up. Something happened to his recording. And it was not salvageable, so here I am to record a quick episode so we can have something out there for you. So last week, we talked about Black Sliq's,
Starting point is 00:03:18 Sabbath's first three albums. And we briefly touched on the obvious, which is that Sabbath is largely considered the founders of the metal genre. But we also talked about how they were a huge influence on thrash metal, which is the faster-paced metal, and stoner metal or doom metal, which is the more slower-paced metal. So yeah, you really can't overstate how responsible Sabbath is for the metal genre that we know today. All the different variations, they all could point back to Sabbath as the origin of that sound. So today we are talking about a band called Sleep, and they formed in 1990.
Starting point is 00:04:11 They have been described as the ultimate stoner rock band. but they also have the Doom Metal label put on them. They came out with three albums in the 90s. The second one, Sleeps Holy Mountain. It's kind of the album that I was introduced to. And their third album, Dope Smoker, they started working on that in 1995, and they came out with a song
Starting point is 00:04:43 that they were pushing to be the single for that record that was over an hour long. And so their record label, London Records, said that that was basically unmarketable and they refused to release it. And so sleep wasn't too thrilled with that. And so they decided to just call it quits. Basically, it's just one of those classic situations where a band doesn't want to be controlled by their record label. And so they decided that they would rather just split the band up than have to bend to the will of the record label, basically. So after that, that's 1998, is when they broke up. Throughout that time between then and basically around 2010,
Starting point is 00:05:31 they are seeing a lot of sort of increased popularity. You know, the Doom and Sludge metal, desert rock, stoner metal, those genres are starting to gain popularity throughout this time, and Sleep's popularity is also growing along with it. And so in 2009, the band gets back together. They do a couple of shows here and there, and again, their popularity is continuing to grow. You know, as they tour, they gain more and more followers. And then in 2012, they basically consider themselves a fully reunited band. And then earlier this year in April, they released their...
Starting point is 00:06:12 first album in nearly 20 years called The Sciences. And that is what we are playing for you today. We're playing a track from the sciences. This song is called Marijuana, since we played Sweet Leaf for you last week. I figured this would be a perfect companion to that song. As Q astutely pointed out last week, Sweet Leaf opens up with the sound of somebody doing a bong rip. and so does this song. So here we go.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Again, this is Marijuana Nott's theme, and this is off Sleep's 2018 album The Sciences. Okay, so as you can hear from that clip, there are a lot of similarities between the music that Sleep is putting out and the stuff that Sabbath put out back in the 70s, especially the guitar work, the bass player, is a huge, huge fan of Gieser. Butler, it's obvious. There's even
Starting point is 00:09:17 a track on this record called Giza Butler. So, they're not even really hiding it. So anyway, I'm not going to dive too far into the song. I think it speaks for itself. But I did want to play the guitar solo for you. And
Starting point is 00:09:33 I'm going to let that clip sort of close out the episode. Next week, we are going to talk about Fleet Fox's second studio album, Helplessness Blues. And that's going to be a nice 180 from the last couple of weeks where we've been talking about heavy metal. This is going to be basically Quentin and I fanboying and nerding out over Robin Pecknold and what an incredible
Starting point is 00:10:01 singer-songwriter he is. So anyway, that's going to do it. Again, I've got one more clip for you and that's the guitar solo for Sleep's Marijuana. And I would say that it's probably one of the best guitar solos I've heard in a while, as far as new songs are concerned. So anyway, here it is. That's going to do it. My name is Travis. Next week we'll talk about Fleetboxes.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Take care. 92% of households that start the year with Peloton are still active a year later. 92% because of a bike? Not just bikes. We also make treadmills and roars. Oh, let me guess. For elite athletes only, right? Nope.
