Starting point is 00:02:55 Welcome back to No Filler, the music podcast dedicated to sharing the often overlooked hidden gyms that fill the space between the singles on our favorite records. If you're new to the show, the idea is let's take an album and talk about the songs that weren't singles, the songs that you may have skipped over to get to the singles. We believe here that more often than not, it's the songs that weren't singles that sometimes are the best songs on the album. And it is our hope that we can bring some songs to you that you haven't heard before from some of your favorite bands. Okay, so where's Quentin, you might be asking? Well, he's still on vacation. But he will be back next week, I promise you that. So it's just me again, and what a perfect opportunity to bring some heavy metal to the table.
Starting point is 00:03:48 Because as we know, Quentin is not a fan of metal of any kind, really. I'm just as confused by it as you are, but here we are. So today we are talking about Soulfly. What is Soulfly? Who are these guys? Well, if you're a fan of a band called Sepultera, a heavy metal thrash band, iconic thrash band from the 80s and 90s,
Starting point is 00:04:16 Soulfly is the second musical project of Max Cavalera, who was the founding member of Sepultera, along with his brother Igor Cavalera, and he broke away from that band in 1996 to form Soulfly. And I've been a fan of Sepulterra now for a few years, And I have to admit, I was not aware of Soulfly until a buddy of mine, shout out to Brian if you're listening, turn me on to these guys last week when he introduced me to their album ritual, which came out last year. This is their 11th studio album. And word on the street is that this is a return to form for Max Cavalera.
Starting point is 00:04:59 This album is sort of a return to the Roots, if you will, of Sepultera. The reason I said it like that is because Roots is the name of an album by Sepulterra came on in 1996. I was trying to make a pun. So this is a return to form for Max Cavalera. The songs on this album sound like Sepultera songs that you may remember hearing back in the 90s. And that's what makes it such a great album. Okay, so let's get right into it. it. This is a side track episode after all. We like to get right into the music. Keep it quick and
Starting point is 00:05:35 dirty because sometimes that's what metal is, right? Quick and dirty. So let's get right into the song. We'll play a little bit of it and then we'll talk about it. And man, let me tell you, man, I've got a song for you today that's going to be, you're going to have to, I'm just going to tell you right now. I'm going to give you a warning before this song plays. Turn down your volume just a little bit. But then crank it back up once the song starts playing because this song is loud and heavy
Starting point is 00:06:07 and it comes at you real fast right off the rip. So you've been warned. So here is a song called The Summoning by Soulfly came out last year on the album ritual. Get ready because your ears
Starting point is 00:06:25 are about to start bleeding. Here we go. Let's just pause right there before we play any more of the song. But God damn. Does it get any better than that? So I'm just going to play the part of Quentin here, for those of you who may align with him. He probably wouldn't like his voice. He'd probably be a little bit confused by the voice.
Starting point is 00:08:19 He would say that he appreciates what they're doing, but he can't get into it. Okay, we got that out of the way. It's like he's sitting right. year. So let's talk about what makes Soulfly, what makes Max Cavalera really such a powerful, powerful force to be reckoned with when it comes to his approach to thrash metal, right? And so if you're familiar with Sepultera, this song sounds familiar to you because it's like I said earlier, it's a return to form. It's kind of a throwback, really. I mean, it sounds new, but it also sounds old, right? It's thrash metal.
Starting point is 00:08:59 It's the Max Cavalera that we know and love, right? He even told fans prior to the album's release that this would be a quote, tribal thrash LP. Tribal thrash, right? If you listen to Chaos AD or Roots back in the day by Sepulterra, I mean, that's what you call it, right? Tribal thrash, the way that they combine Brazilian and Latin grooves into their music. You know, that's what makes it a tribal thrash, right? And so he was telling us from the get-go that this was going to be a record that sounded like the past. And man, that song, like I said, it really does sound like a Sepultero song.
Starting point is 00:09:36 And I think that's why this record is getting so much love by Soulfly and Sepultero fans. So, hey, let's pick it up where we left off because I want to play a little bit more of this song. Pay attention to the way that these songs, to the way that this track changes. I love it when a metal band knows how to change and keep you guessing on a song. All right, so here we go. I'm going to push play again. We're going to pick up right where we left off. Exterminate a game of age.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Innocence and chain. Exploited by your own reflections. There it is, the summoning by Soulfly. Interesting how at the end of that song, it almost fades into like a, industrial electronic song, right? Really cool. But again, man, what a relentless attack. Am I right?
Starting point is 00:12:37 I mean, that's what it's all about right there, man. Crank it up and just fucking let it rip. So, interesting fact here about this record, Max Cavalera's son is behind the drum kit. His name is Zion Cavalera. on the lead guitar is Mark Rizzo. He is the man behind those thrashing, shredding lead guitar riffs throughout this album. And from what I'm reading here, like I said, I'm not too familiar with Soulfly,
Starting point is 00:13:13 but it sounds like Soulfly has not been this heavy since 2005's album Dark Ages. So if you're a Soulfly fan and you liked what they were doing over a decade ago, then this record is for you. If you're a Sepuletura fan like I am, Max Cavalera is going back to his Sepulura sound on this record. And I'm telling you, man, put this on and push play. You will not be disappointed.
Starting point is 00:13:44 So that's that quick and dirty look, like I said. One of the other reasons I wanted to play some metal today is just to mix it up a little bit. one of the things we we hope that we do is play a wide range of genres on this podcast. Sometimes kind of like we are now, we will latch onto a band like Radiohead or Spoon and really go album by album and dig deep into that band. But we try to mix in different genres, different decades here and there in between those albums, just to kind of mix it up because that's what music's all about.
Starting point is 00:14:22 for being a fan of music is all about. And so again, in that spirit, like I said last week, when I lied to you about what we were going to be covering on the next episode. Next week, we're switching. We're doing a 180, and we're going to be talking about Mercury program. You've heard us tease that episode now for two weeks. But when Quentin comes back, that is our next full-length episode. They are an instrumental rock group.
Starting point is 00:14:49 We've used the term math rock here and there to describe them I wouldn't really say that they're a traditional math rock band, but they definitely have, a lot of their songs are very intricate and melodic in ways that math rock can be sometimes. So anyway, we're going to talk about their 2002 record, A Data Learned, the Language. And like I said, that's going to be a huge 180. If you were not a fan of today's heavy metal,
Starting point is 00:15:20 tune in next week because I think you'll like the Merit. Mercury program. They are the opposite of heavy metal. So anyway, check us out on no filler podcast.com. You can hear us on SoundCloud and iTunes. Uh, you know, hey, drop us a line on any of those platforms. Tell us what you like. Tell us what you don't like. Tell us what bands you want to hear.
