My name is Travis, and it's Halloween night.
Do you got the lights turned down or what? What's going on?
I have a candle burning, but it's such a pleasant aroma that I'm not spooked, man.
What's the aroma?
It's called mystery scent
What?
Mystery scents
Yeah, mystery scent
I bought it when I was in Austin
I didn't buy it, it was gifted to me
You don't know what the smell's gonna be
It smells, it smells like a Christmas tree
So, yeah, I fucked up
It's Halloween, I fucked up
It's not Christmas, what the hell
What do you like, you drink it from a goblin right now, dude?
You got your witch's hat on?
Yeah, actually I do
Uh, can I just
apologize to our dear listener
about my vocals last week.
I like how you said listener.
Singular.
That's the ongoing joke, brother.
Yeah.
Mitchell, I'm sorry, dude, I'm sorry
about your ears
because I'm sure that you heard those pops
and all that shit
from my recording last week.
I don't know what the hell's wrong with my system
or if it's my microphone or what.
but I keep having to jump between my MacBook and my Windows computer for recording these episodes
and I just can't seem to figure out something that works.
So I think I'm just going to buy a new microphone.
But it seems to be working great tonight.
I even did a few test recordings and it sounded fantastic.
So hopefully that won't happen again.
So this is our sidetrack episode for the week and we are recording this.
on the great pumpkin day.
And we suck.
So here's the deal.
We would have had to fake it and record this on like a different day if we wanted to release this on Halloween.
Right.
So sorry.
Apologies that this is obviously not going to be released until after Halloween.
But I'm feeling it, dude.
Especially up here, man.
The weather is just perfect Halloween weather, dude.
It's like overcast.
there's just a slight sprinkle.
It's like 57 degrees.
How's it down there in Texas?
Is it all hot and shitty?
No, it's actually lovely.
It's like 60s.
I mean, it was raining.
It's been raining, but luckily it just held up.
I remember growing up in Texas in elementary school,
we had like that classic fall, like Halloween.
weather, you know.
But then, like, something changed, like, halfway through elementary school.
And then, like, Halloween night was all muggy and hot and gross.
I mean, it depends, dude.
It's not, I mean, this has been a really wet October for Texas, or for Dallas at least.
But, you know.
But hey, man, let's get down to the fucking business here, dude.
So I briefly mentioned last week on our OK computer.
episode that Tom York composed the soundtrack for the Susperia remake that just came out.
And so I figured, since it's Halloween and everything, let's do an episode on the music of
Susperia.
So not just his latest work, but the original score from the 1977 film by a band called Goblin.
and I love the name of that band, dude.
Yeah, that's a great band name.
I don't know anything about them.
So here's a quick synopsis about these guys.
Basically, they are sort of known for their soundtrack work,
specifically with this guy, Dario Argento,
who is the original director for Susperia.
It's an Italian director, Italian band,
the film is obviously Italian, right?
But really interesting film.
It's kind of an artistic film.
Very like, like, you know, it's got a very, like, it's obvious it was made.
It was a 70s flick right when you watch it.
But really cool stuff, really, really interesting camera angles and like iconic, iconic horror film, right?
I would say if you're a fan of horror, it's got to be on your list of,
of films to watch.
But again, it's a bit weird.
It's one of those weird, like I said,
kind of more artistic, you know, films.
But anyway, it's a classic.
So the remake of Suspira just came out
probably last week.
I haven't seen it, unfortunately.
So I can't compare the two.
But I can say that, of course, Tom York's,
music here is
amazing. And what's cool about it is
you know, we kind of briefly talked about this
on one of our, I guess it was our last
spoon sidetrack that we did, where we talked about
the soundtrack for
Stranger Than Fiction, right?
And how Britt Daniel sort of contributed to some of the scores, right?
The actual like pieces for this, but I mean,
other than that, it was mainly just spoon songs without the
vocals in it or that one song in particular written in reverse right written in reverse no not
written in reverse book i write book i write that's what it was called yeah but we were talking about
how like wouldn't it be great to hear brit daniel actually sit down and compose a soundtrack for a
film not not like write a spoon song for a film but britt daniel doing a score right well you get this
with with uh with this asperio soundtrack because it's he did write or i mean i guess i should say
he released some singles off of this album that are um you know he's singing in them uh they feel
more like you know like maybe a tom york solo song right but um a good portion of the soundtrack is
sort of your traditional like movie score type music but with the tom york spin on it so really awesome
soundtrack definitely give it a listen but here we go here's what we're going to do so the original
suspirious score the theme song is just it's up there with you know the psycho uh theme song or like
the Halloween um score or like the exorcism um
theme song as far as like well-known horror movie theme songs right so we're going to play that
first you actually heard like an alternate version of it the song that we played uh that played this
episode in um that's like i mean it's called the uh well it's called the suspiria theme um but it's just
celesta and bells basically um so you heard the the theme
but the actual sort of the one that plays the movie in is what we're going to play right now.
So let's just go ahead and do that.
So here we go.
Again, this is the band Goblin, and this is the theme song to the 1977 horror film Suspirit.
Man, that's a great movie intro, like title credit sequence song.
Yeah, that melody that's kind of playing in the background of the song is used like over and over again the other song.
It's sort of, it's the theme, right?
Yeah.
But yeah, I just love that.
I love all the things that they're doing in that, in that track, like the kind of vocals in the background, you know.
Yeah, dude, like the growly whisper.
Yeah, if we played the track long enough.
Hang on, dude.
Give me one second.
I just want to turn the lights off in this room real quick.
Do it, man.
I like where you're going.
All right, they're off.
I just got the glow of the candle.
You know what's funny, dude?
When we did the Black Sabbath episode,
and I was hoping you'd turn the lights off,
you didn't do it.
Well, that's because, you know what?
So, here's a deal about living way up north.
Right now, it's barely 6.30,
and it's fucking dark outside, dude.
But when we were recording that Black Sabbath episode,
it was still bright as day.
So I turned out the lights.
I didn't, I've only got blinds in here.
And I could, you know, like it wasn't dark, man.
So I'm feeling it now, dude.
It is dark and gloomy.
You could have put, you could have put a blanket over your window or something, you know?
Yeah, that's what you said.
That's what you said during, like, I asked if you wanted me to, to go grab a blanket.
Like, we could just wait.
We could just put up one of those like,
Yeah, exactly.
But anyway, okay, well, you know what?
I'm just, I'm glad that you're, you're getting into the spirit here.
It's Halloween, dude.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So the movie is about this kind of, I don't know, it's hard to describe.
It's kind of about this, let me just read the synopsis here.
An American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that
the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders.
That's your synopsis.
So, anyway, I just love what Goblin does with that score.
You know, they use a lot of different kind of interesting instruments and stuff.
Well, no, and it sounds like a ballet score.
Yeah.
let's let's now so here here's what I it was hard to pick just one song off of Tom York's
Susperia it's like 25 songs right because it's a soundtrack yeah and there's a lot of different
vibes on the soundtrack too a lot of different you know he it's all over the map but I wanted
to because the the goblin song is kind of the
theme that's sort of the motif that plays a lot through the through the score there is a sort of
there's sort of a theme i'm not going to play the actual like quote unquote theme song because i don't
think there is one there is a song called suspicium which is probably like supposed to be the title
track but uh i didn't want to play i didn't want to play one of the tracks with him singing in it
because we're going to be covering tom york singing for the next like three or four months you know
and I wanted to play a Tom York score, you know what I mean?
Like a song.
Yeah, absolutely, dude.
We're getting into a soundtrack.
Exactly.
All right, so this track is called Volk.
V-O-L-K.
So what I like about this score, and you could tell from that song,
like, you know, it sounds like it could be a score from one of those classic,
horror films from the 70s, right?
Like he does a good job sort of...
Paying homage.
Yeah, but you got to, yeah,
and you got to listen to a good portion of the score
to really know what I'm talking about.
But it fits right in there.
Yeah, he did a really good job, man.
Yeah, he did a great job.
He did a great job.
With his choice in like, you know,
with the effects and, you know,
the synthesizer approach and all that.
Right. And there are some, I gotta say, there are some like just great songs that feature his vocals on it that came out as singles for this record.
I haven't heard any of them. One of them, you know what, dude, let's fucking play it one. Why the hell not?
That's what we do on this spot.
All right. This one's called Has Ended.
I liked how, um, I liked how like a gut-wrenching and uneasy feeling the beginning of that song was.
And then it kind of just, oh, yeah, morphed into just a song, like just a cool song.
Yeah.
Now, what I'm curious about is if, if these songs with his vocals appear throughout the movie,
or if they were just sort of released like in companion to, because I mean, I assume that Sospirium,
which is the name of one of those scenes.
singles is maybe the credits or maybe like the beginning of the film.
Yeah.
But anyway, I'm going to have to go see the movie, which is something I want to do anyway.
But yeah.
That's a great song, man.
I loved it.
Like, I like the idea of, you know, artists that I love getting into making
soundtracks because it always makes me think like, okay, after getting in this mindset,
Like we kind of talked about this with our Stranger Than Fiction sidetrack for Spoon.
Like how much of that, you know, getting into that mindset, how much of that will influence Tom York moving forward?
You know, writing solo material for himself and getting back together with the radio head guys, you know, like, are we going to see some dark radiohead stuff moving forward after being in this mindset, this headspace?
Here's the thing, man.
I think Radiohead's music has always sort of tinkered with dark themes.
You know what I mean?
Absolutely.
Sort of, yeah.
So, I mean, I don't think, that's why to me it wasn't a stretch at all to have Tom York do a horror movie soundtrack.
I think it's a perfect fit.
And I think, you know, their latest record, moon-shaped pool has some of these kind of sort of melancholy piano.
darker themes, you know?
I think it just, it's a perfect fit.
Yeah.
But here's something interesting.
So that track that we just played,
there was some drums in that song, right?
Right.
Guess who the drummer was.
Do I know the person?
No.
Oh.
So I guess you won't be able to guess.
But it's,
it's, uh,
Noah York.
As in his son.
that's pretty cool.
So anyway...
That's great, man.
That's really cool.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But yeah, I checked to see if any other radiohead guys contributed to this and it was just him.
But anyway, so there you go.
That gives you an idea of what to expect from this record.
I would say go see the movie.
I've heard that it has gotten good reviews.
And yeah, that's...
That's it.
Well, happy Halloween, brother.
Yeah, man.
Let me go, I'm going to go, I don't know, turn into a bat or something.
Fly away.
Cool.

Anyways, yeah, and we will shout at you next week when we cover Talking Heads.

Bye, bye.
Let me just, let me just tee this up before we play it out here.
This is, I'm just going to play another song from the Syspira soundtrack.
This one is a perfect way to close out Halloween.
And unfortunately, the listeners aren't going to be listening to this episode until
sometime in November.
But, you know, whatever.
Get back into the spirit, you know.
Why not?
So this song is called Sabbath incantation.
Ooh.
So there you go.
My name is Travis.
And I'm Quentin.
Talk to you all next week.
Bye.
You may have heard of the sex cult nexium and the famous actress who went to prison for her involvement, Alison Mack.
But she's never told her side of the story until now.
People assume that I'm like this pervert.
My name is Natalie Robamed.
And in my new podcast, I talked to Allison to try to understand how she went from TV.
actor to cult member. How do you feel about having been involved in bringing sexual trauma
to other people? I don't even know how to answer that question. Alison Afternexium from CBC's
