Starting point is 00:00:59 Hi, I'm Mike Judge, and you're listening to the Pantheon Network. And welcome to No Filler. I'm Travis, and we're kicking off today's What You Heard. With a brand new song from Bad Math, this song is called Maze. So there you have it, Maze by Bad Math. We've definitely talked about these guys before. They're 2021 record narrative, I'm sorry, missing narrative, definitely showed up on our best of for 2021. I absolutely fell in love with that record.
Starting point is 00:04:07 These guys are a group of Hong Kong, actually. It's kind of like math rock mixed with Dream Pop. There's a little bit of psychedelic in there. And this new record spectacle just dropped. And Q, I'm curious what your thoughts are. Oh, that's right. Quentin isn't here today. So before I talk more about this record,
Starting point is 00:04:30 And to explain why this episode is so short, we've just been really busy the last month. Q's trying to sell his house. They bought a house, but they haven't sold the house they live in right now. So they're kind of in this weird limbo where they're about to have two mortgages if they don't sell their house quickly. But yeah, anyway, he's been super stressed out and busy with that. So we haven't had time to get together and record. He's been busy. I've been busy.
Starting point is 00:04:58 I just got back from a much-needed vacation. So anyway, I wanted to drop something for you guys. So this is my quick and dirty what you heard. So I've got another song I'm going to play for you guys at the end here. But anyway, so we did also want to mention a couple of things. So if you follow us on Spotify, you may notice that some episodes are missing. Or you may have no clue that some of our newer episodes never even released. Because Spotify is, how do I say this?
Starting point is 00:05:30 They're very quick to remove content that their system detects as having copyrighted material in it. And so, you know, for our music podcast, all we do is play music. And, you know, we are covered by fair use laws to play that music because we review and critique it. Really, it's the big record labels that we typically get a notice from Spotify about. so you know BMI or universal music group any artist that falls under that umbrella which is a lot by the way we get notices from Spotify and we can contest it sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't so Spotify drops our episodes sometimes without giving us much that we can do about it so anyway we're reaching out to you guys through this episode to ask that you use any of the other podcast apps out there
Starting point is 00:06:26 If you have an iPhone, you can listen to No Filler on the podcast app. I haven't seen any of our episodes drop on the podcast app yet. There's also a bunch of other apps out there. I think Podbean is one of them. I don't know if they have an app, like if you prefer to listen on your phone. But there's a bunch out there. So, you know, Spotify's great and everything, but they also suck. So listen to us on any number of other podcast apps that feature our show.
Starting point is 00:06:55 So anyway, yeah, listen to us somewhere else besides Spotify, if you want to make sure you get every single episode. And then that's it. So, all right, let's get back to Bad Math. Hong Kong-based Dream Pop group. And I'm reading on the Band Camp release page for this new record spectacle that just dropped June 1st, so a little over a week ago. It turns out that the previous lead singer of the group,
Starting point is 00:07:22 her name was Chan Yuki. Apparently, she left for the UK to pursue farming, if I'm reading that correctly. And so when she did that, they paused on the group and paused on making any new music, took a long break. And then they essentially rebooted with a new lead singer. Her name is Gwyngy Ho. And it looks like the, yeah, it looks like the lineup. changed. In addition to the singer, they also brought on another guitar player. So they now have two guitar players. So they had a little bit of a lineup change. And with that, they craved a fresh
Starting point is 00:08:08 spark, a new sound, and that's what this record is. Honestly, it's, what I like about it is, it's still the bad math that I really fell in love with with missing narrative. But it seems to have a little bit more energy in it, which is really interesting. So anyway, Spectacle by Bad Math. Check out this record. It's solid from start to finish. They will most likely show up again at the end of the year under my best stuff for 2025. Okay, so one more thing to talk about before I close out the episode. Our next episode, we did record something, and it was an extra long episode where we sat down with our longtime friend, Mitchell. Sometimes we call him Mitch. Sometimes we call him Mitchie, depending on the mood that we're in. He is somebody that we've
Starting point is 00:09:01 mentioned on this podcast numerous times. Going back to one of the earliest episodes, we talked about him in episode three, which was technically episode six or seven because of the way that we put out episodes back then. But it's the episode on Kings of Leon's youth and young manhood. So that was, again, one of our early episodes recorded back in 2018. And the reason we talked about Mitchell in that episode is because we kind of discovered and fell in love with Kings of Leon together with him back in high school. We saw Kings of Leon open for the strokes, had no clue who they were.
Starting point is 00:09:41 And then we fell in love with the group. and what we covered in this next episode that should be releasing sometime in June. I'm going to start working on it. I swear, I promise, I'll be working on it very soon. We are talking about Kings of Leon's very next album, AHA Shake Heartbreak, which is an album that we were super amped up about because we had fell in love with Kings of Leon, having seen them open for the strokes. We bought the EP, we bought Youth and Young Manhood.
Starting point is 00:10:11 and then we were, you know, excited and had a lot of buildup and anticipation for this new record and we were blown away by it. I won't say more because we'll get into all that on the episode and just talk with Mitch about growing up and listening to music together because we were very, he was right there with us for a lot of the very formative years listening and discovering music together for the first time with Quentin and I. So yeah, I think you guys are really going to love him. he's a funny guy and he speaks the same language that we do and you know we've known and loved him
Starting point is 00:10:48 for almost our entire life so anyway that'll be coming out next and it's a very long episode so what I might do is split it into two episodes and try to release him you know pretty quickly one after the next so that you guys can get an extra episode this month because what we decided to do was talk about each track on the record which is something that we haven't done I think since our episode on Radioheads in Rainbows, where we had another guest, Nathan, who we've had on the show as a guest, I think at least three times.
Starting point is 00:11:25 But anyway, so look forward to that. That's the next episode that's going to drop. And, okay, back to the What You Heard segment of this What You Heard episode. I've got one more track for you guys. So this is another brand new record. and man that I fall in love with this album instantly. It's the latest released by Stereo Lab, came out May 23rd.
Starting point is 00:11:47 This album is called Instant Holograms on Metal Film, and I am already looking to get tickets for their Granada theater performance in November. If you're a fan of Stereo Lab like I am, and you have been listening for years like I have, then you know what to expect from StereoLab. This is their first record in 15 years, and it's just a phenomenal record. It's everything you want out of a stereo lab record. It's jazzy.
Starting point is 00:12:18 It's dream poppy. It's psychedelic. It's dancey. Man, it's everything, man. It's everything you'd want. So I'm going to close us out here with a track off that record. And, yeah, again, keep your ears perked up. Keep your eyes peeled for our next episode.
Starting point is 00:12:33 It will be dropping within the next week or so on Kings of Leon. aha shake heartbreak. Until then, thank you as always for listening. My name is Travis. And this is Transmuted Matter by Stereo Lab. You all take care.
