And I'm Travis. And on this month's What You Heard, we're kicking things off with the... A brand new single from Panda Bear. This song is called Defense.
Starting point is 00:01:44 I always love the way he puts his lyrics together, like his vocals, like the way he phrases things. Like, that's what made Animal Collective so interesting, right? It was like the way that they would string the words together, like, in these really creative ways. Because, like, we've talked about this before, Q, right? We did an episode on Strawberry Jam, right? Did we do that?
Starting point is 00:03:53 We did. No, we did sung tongs. Okay, maybe sung tongs. Yeah, and I think, and we've done Maryweather. Okay. That's how I was, dude, I was going to ask that. Like, if we, if we hadn't done Maryweather yet, we got to do that first thing. For sure, yeah, we've done that.
Starting point is 00:04:06 Okay, all right. I think we may have done that one with Josh. Or it's either that or it was person pitch, Panabar's first full length. I think that's the one we did with Josh. Yeah, that's right. That was a good episode. But yeah, we did, we did do Animal Collectives, Mary Weather Pills, Civilian, November 2021, Q. Man, we've done so many episodes, it's almost like we've done 300 of them.
Starting point is 00:04:31 You know what's funny about that, Travis? Because that we completely missed the opportunity. It's almost like we've done 302 or three episodes, depending on when this one drops. Yeah. It's crazy that we didn't mention that, Travis. Kind of a big screw up on our part, because we were, we were even talking about it. about this, like leading up to it, like, man, we got to do something big for 300. Maybe we can get this person on the pot or this person.
Starting point is 00:04:57 We're going to get all these guest people on the pot. Here's what happens. And it just can't even win, dude. Yeah. And it just, time flies, too. Like, the, uh, the Kitchens of Distinction episode was our 300th episode. And we didn't make no fuss. Nothing wrong with that.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Nothing wrong with that as our 300. But like, we didn't even mention it. Um, anyway. You know what? You know what I think it is, dude? What's that? I think it's because we started recording. these out of order. In the last month, we've kind of shuffled them right. We did like a year-end
Starting point is 00:05:24 episode that we recorded that hasn't come out yet. We did my bonus Halloween episode, which I guess has come out of this point. But like we did them out of order. And so we like, I think we like took our eye off the episode count. You know what I mean? Because we were technically recording one that's, you know, 304, 305, like those episodes we recorded. I'm just giving myself an excuse. Like we should have been prepared, but we weren't. That's all right. Yeah. So, uh, Congrats, Trev. Honestly, dude, I don't think most podcasts make it anywhere near an episode 300. So it's a pretty big deal. It's a big deal.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Now, that was a tangent, brother. Yes. Sorry. I just, I got sidetracked. I got excited. But yeah, Panda Bear, dude. I was talking about how much I love the way that they, you know, they being animal collective. and, you know, Panda Bear specifically, like his music, just how they phrase things and how they, like, string their melodies together.
Starting point is 00:06:27 Like, they're just very creative with their word smithery and stuff like that, you know. Yeah. Yeah, and I didn't realize this, but this is going to be his first solo album in five years going under the name Panda Bear. He's just been collaborating with other artists for the last half decade, according to this, this, uh, pitchfork article. Yeah. So that's crazy and it's... That is cool.
Starting point is 00:06:50 It's exciting, dude. I haven't really paid too much attention to his album's post-person pitch, which came out forever ago. But yeah, dude, this one's got me pumped. So, yeah, it mentions in the song title here, it's featuring Cindy Lee. and I'm trying to figure out where Cindy Lee comes into play here. I only heard Panda Bear. Maybe she plays the guitar.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Yeah, that's what it says here in the intro queue. It's like a pyrotechnic Cindy Lee solo lights up the new single. So we didn't even get to hear it. You know, we can let that be the outro. We can pick it up and let it play out so we can hear the solo. All right. Because, dude, a pyrotechnic solo sounds like, I'm intrigued by that, dude. Doesn't that?
Starting point is 00:07:45 It's going to be. It's going to be flaming. It's going to be flaming hot. But just to, you know, just to circle back to what I was talking about by like the way that they phrase, like, their lyricism and stuff. Just go listen to Brother Sport. Oh, yeah. If you don't know what I mean. Because that's, that's what I think of like, they're just the way that his lyrics.
Starting point is 00:08:10 kind of work in that song kind of explains it. And like I think we probably talk about this in the Sung Tongues episode. They treated their vocals as an instrument, right? Oh yeah. Yeah. That was the big part of Animal Club. It still is. Yeah, it's like the vocals are like are percussive in that way. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:08:29 So for sure. Yeah, and that's just part of how he how he writes music, you know? So yeah, exciting dude. I'll be looking forward to that album next year. I think it drops early next year. Yeah. Awesome. all right well like you said cue this is our what you heard for the month of november and this is technically our last what you heard of the year because come december we'll be dropping our best of 2024 episodes every week um but um yeah so last watch what you heard cue i kicked us off with a katherine wheel song which means it's it's your turn to kick us off cue
Starting point is 00:09:06 So here's what I'm doing. I have so many songs on my Best of 24, like prospects for Best of 24. And my head has just been down listening to nothing but new music these last few months, just preparing for Our Best of. I'm going to bring some of the songs that I know for sure aren't going to make it. on my final. So this is the, this is the reject.
Starting point is 00:09:41 I don't want to call them rejects, Jeff. No, you know, dude, that means that you, you, you listen to an abundance of brand new stuff of you, if you've got stuff on the chopping block. Dude, I listen to a ton
Starting point is 00:09:54 of new stuff this year. So yeah, I think I've got, actually, you know what? I do have one song from the 90s for tonight. But otherwise, the rest of it is 2024 stuff?
Starting point is 00:10:06 Yeah. Wow, dude. I didn't have anything to throw. So what you're trying to do, Q, sneak in another five to your best of what you're trying to do. You know what? I guess so. I guess we could think of it that way. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Actually, you know, okay, I'll kick things off with the song from the 90s because I actually thought about covering this group as a deep dive, but I had something else in mind instead. So this is a group called Autoclave. Yeah. I was intrigued by this album, Art. You sent me this. Yeah. And I was like, man. never, never seen it, never heard of him before.
Starting point is 00:10:39 So where do they fall under the 90s rock umbrella queue? Like where? Oh, man. What, uh, what floor are they in? You know, I'm mixing my metaphors here, but like, you know, we talk about 90s rock as being this bottomless pit of amazing music. You got your grunge, your shoegaze, your alt rock. I would put them under alt rock, but more punk, maybe somewhere between like, I don't
Starting point is 00:11:05 know, dude. Talking heads and... You had me a talking heads, dude. Maybe Sonic Youth. I don't know, man. It's hard. It's hard. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:14 No, I got that. That's actually good. That I think I... In other words, they would likely show up at CBGBs. Okay. Got it. Yeah. Say no more, dude.
Starting point is 00:11:25 Yeah. Yeah. So let me just read this real quick. I said say no more. So I actually came across this. There's this great band camp article on about, about. Christina Bellot, who she's one of the singers in this band, maybe the main singer, and she was pretty prolific in the 90s, and she was just in a ton of different groups,
Starting point is 00:11:51 one of them being Autoclave. So this is a pretty good way to sum it up, dude. Autoclave songs are naughty, noty, like K-N-O-T-T-Y. Okay. Nottie, yet poppy. and the band emphasizes these tensions by walking a line between inspired amateurism and clever technical twists. Inspired amateurism, I like, because it does feel like you're listening to this band that is kind of figuring it out still. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:25 This, I mean, you know, this is, so this was a, I believe with this self-titled was, I think it's two EPs that have just been put together as one album. Got it. So, yeah, they parted ways in 1991. So this is early, early 90s stuff here. All right. So I'm going to play track two off of this self-titled. This song is called I'll Take You Down.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Yeah, I was really intrigued by that, man. Kept me on my toes. The whole album's going to do that to you. That's great, dude. I really enjoyed that. I liked her vocal style quite a bit. And the guitar was great. I love good guitar-driven indie rock.
Starting point is 00:15:16 It's my bread and my buttercue. But that was great. I love that. I love that. That was great. Maybe we should cover this for a full length. No, just give me a little taste, you know? All right.
Starting point is 00:15:25 Just a taste. Yeah, I like it. Give it a go. I like it when you get a chance. Yeah, it's really good. Another album or another band of hers that I liked that I checked out from this article. They're called Slant Six. Slant Six.
Starting point is 00:15:41 Slant Six. A little bit. more like pop punk another 90s forward yep okay autoclave one of the many groups that she was in and that's how we're going to kick things off dude pass it over to you what you got i got a great follow-up dude and you're going to be stoked you're going to be stoked all right so this is this is this is one of my tracks that was going to be on my best of but they got bumped but you're going to are you sitting down i am sitting down good so i'm going to show you a picture of this this young man i'm going to see if you recognize him far left you recognize this dude his music has played a
Starting point is 00:16:28 role in our lives over the years cue oh hang on dude just one of the guys from the That is Frankie Broils himself. Awesome, man. So he's in another group called Omni. Oh, hell yeah. Dude, he dropped a few, like, solo albums that I really liked a while back. Yeah, yeah, yep. And I think that's the last time he showed up on No Filler was for that solo record that he put out.
Starting point is 00:16:57 But he's been with Omni for a while now. So, dude, I'm, I can't work. And they were, they were just signed... They're on subpop. So, you know, he's made it. Nice. He's made it. Oh, that's awesome, dude.
Starting point is 00:17:10 But yeah, we've been following this guy for a long time. So he was, I mean, he was just a young pup, dude, when he was in the Balkans. And this is one of the first bands that we covered on our music blog that we used to run called New Dust. Yeah, dude. I remember just being like, man, this is awesome, dude. We're finding music that's great that we never would have heard of. I think they may have emailed us or something. I'm pretty sure we got an email from one of them, yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Yeah. So anyway, here we go. This is a new record. It came out in February of this year. So came out a little bit, a little while back. But I'm going to play a song off of their new record, souvenir. This song is called Granite Kiss.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Awesome, dude. He's still. kind of in the same vein, I'd say, as Balkins, but I mean, it's a way more tame. Yeah, it's definitely like, you can see how you get from Bacchens to this. Who knows how many years later, but yeah. That was great. 2009, probably 2008, something like that. Dude, did you know that he played for, I think it was Deer Hunter, I think?
Starting point is 00:20:55 Deer Hunter, yeah, he toured with Deer Hunter for a while. He toured with, yeah, like, I think he was actually like part of the band. I don't know if he was just touring a member. I think he was actually, like, part of the band. So, yeah, that's pretty awesome. Good on him, dude. I just remember we were, you know, just so taken by that Balkans record because it was like, you know, I mean, at the time, like, we would have been like,
Starting point is 00:21:20 you know how we're so excited right now about all these bands that are making 90s sounding like grunge, all, like how that sound is back, right? Yeah, yeah. Like with Balkans, it was like the strokes, you know, like they were making. new music that sounded post-punk like the strokes, you know? Yes, dude, that was, yeah, that was a big draw for me. Yeah, for that group. Dude, I'm just looking at this right now.
Starting point is 00:21:42 Did you know that, okay, so, so one of their albums was released in 2011. It was just a self-titled, sorry, Balkans. Oh, okay, okay. They released a 10-year anniversary edition with four bonus tracks. I saw it and I listened to them. Yeah. They were good. I mean, yeah, just more of the same, you know.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Yeah, yeah. Anyways. Yeah, that was great, dude. That's exciting. I've got their album. I just queued up their first album of Omni. You got to check it out. Yeah, dude.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Looks like they got three, four albums. Yeah. But yeah, it's just more of that kind of guitar-driven, just great indie rock, you know, that's what it is. He's been doing it for a long time. Yeah, that's great. All right. So again, that song was called,
Starting point is 00:22:32 Granite Kiss by Omni off their new record souvenir. I'm going to pass it back to you, Q. What do you got? All right. So have you heard of a group called My Wonderful Boyfriend? Nope. I'm sure you haven't. I have not. Sometimes I'd just like to read the description of the group that they clearly wrote themselves. That shows up on Spotify sometimes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Sister, my wonderful boyfriend is a four-piece rock, in parentheses, and roll band with nice haircuts, a firm grasp of melody, and songs that are streaming on the internet. Okay. Doesn't really tell you much, I don't think. Doesn't tell you much, dude. I'm going to play a song of theirs that was dropped at the end of August. It's a little ditty, dude. I think you'll like it.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Love ditties, dude. Here we go. This, I know, right? This song is called My New Shirt. I liked it. Great lyrics. The vocals are interesting. They're kind of like a little bit of emo.
Starting point is 00:26:51 Like Midwest 90s emo. Yes, brother. That's what intrigued me and it got me excited about this group and this song. It reminded me a little bit of Jimmy Eat World. Yeah, the Midwestern 90s. You know, it's funny on the early Jimmy World Records, they would alternate the vocalist, but it was primarily what was the guy's name, Jim, Jim Atkins, I think.
Starting point is 00:27:20 And the other guy that sang is who I'm reminded of here. Just random thought there. Like, I wasn't really getting Jim Atkins vocals, but I was getting the other guy. I don't know his name. but yeah a few of the songs on clarity
Starting point is 00:27:38 and static prevails. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but so the band claims influences such as pavement, big star, Blur, Wilco, and Vampire Weekend. Wilco, I can see that with the guitar work a little bit.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Yeah, so they've got an an EP that's due out December 1st. So, I mean, depending on when we record the rest of our best I might have to squeeze in, find room for one more track if I like these, what I hear. That was, again, my wonderful boyfriend.
Starting point is 00:28:12 And that song was called My New Shirt. Pass it back to you, Trave, what you can. All right, Q. I feel it's my responsibility on what you heard to provide the 180s. Well, with every 180 that you provide, likely it's going to be another one following it. So we might just be able to do a 360 here. That's right. So I randomly decided to listen to this soundtrack.
Starting point is 00:28:38 It just randomly popped it to my head. It's like, you know what? What about the soundtrack was like for the animated series that came out back in 2006 based off of a... You may be familiar with this. It's based off of a Japanese manga called Death Note. Are you familiar with this? Um, slightly. Isn't it, isn't it manga? Probably. Probably, Q.
Starting point is 00:29:09 No, right? Maybe we're both wrong. We both know that, um, we're known for mispronunciating things. That doesn't even make sense by just. For mincing, for minceing. For, mints pronunciation. Incorrectly pronouncing words, cue. It's part of our, our charm, you know. Manga, manga, take your pick. It's manga, brother. And manga, that sounds right.
Starting point is 00:29:32 Or you say it. Yeah. You're probably right. But sure does look like manga, doesn't it? When you spell it out. All right. Anyway. So Death Note, I watched it on Netflix a long, long time ago.
Starting point is 00:29:46 And even back then, I remember being like, man, this music's kind of cool. And I've talked about the Silent Hill soundtracks quite a bit as well. And like part of what, and that's for the video game series, what makes those soundtracks so great is that they're just, they're part like down tempo and part like, kind of like instrumental rock in a little bit and like the soundtrack is the same so anyway long story short if you're familiar with this animated series which probably a lot of you are you might be familiar with this music but cute i think you're just going to listen to this and be like wow that sounds like uh kind of like an instrumental rock you think mercury program like early mercury program like the more all the more angsty mercury program or like math rock type stuff
Starting point is 00:30:32 Right. All right, here we go. I'm here for it, dude. I'm here for it. So I'm going to butcher the hell out of both of these words, the name of the title and the person's name. But here we go. This is, again, from the 2006 animated manga series, Death Note. The artist's name is Hideki Tanayuchi. Actually sounded pretty good. And this song is called Sin Ritsu. Lots of emotion. Made me feel things, dude. Did you feel stuff? Climactic.
Starting point is 00:33:51 I think it's the combination of like the piano and like the grungy guitar, almost kind of grungy, distorted guitar, I think kind of helped. Yeah, I was trying to imagine what could possibly be going on and like that scene. Maybe you should watch the show, dude. It's actually pretty good, pretty interesting.
Starting point is 00:34:09 That definitely had me a... My younger self was interested. They also turned it into like a Netflix live action show that I'm not sure if that did well or not. But anyway, interesting story. I'll just leave it at that. Cool. Yeah, Q. You know, I don't, I leave no stone unturned.
Starting point is 00:34:28 When I look for good rock music, it's there, dude. Who knew? Who would have thought? People who watch anime are probably like, dude, of course. There's a lot of good music in anime. Exactly, exactly. This is the only one that I've ever watched. But anyway, yeah, I just thought it kind of sounded like that, you know,
Starting point is 00:34:49 instrumental guitar-driven rock that we sometimes feature on this show like Toe or Mercury program. It reminded me a lot of do-make, say, think. Yeah, stuff like that, exactly. I do not think I've mentioned that band at all on this podcast. If we haven't done an episode on them, there's a 20-25. episode, man. Oh, sure, man. Okay. Yeah, dude, they did some, some interesting stuff. Yeah, yeah. Cool. All right, Q, I, uh, I expect another 180, but I feel like you, I think that's not, that's not too out of the, out of the blue there, so. All right,
Starting point is 00:35:26 chaff, so you, have you heard of an artist that goes by Shook? No, I have not. This guy just drops some feel, just feel good, instrumental, um, synth pop stuff. I really really enjoy his work. I sit instrumental and this one actually has vocals on it. So this song I'm going to bring was actually originally released on an album of his that came out in 2019 called Music for City and Nature. And recently it got released as a single of this year and I thought, what's going on here? and I compared the two and it sounds like he's actually completely
Starting point is 00:36:12 re-recorded it. So, yeah, it's, I mean, the same like, the same bones. It's got the same bones, you know, but it's, it's been redone. And it's, this is a song that. Big old pilot than bones, you know. You can't,
Starting point is 00:36:27 you can't not enjoy this song. I dare you, dude. Challenge accepted. All right, this song is called Lullaby. parentheses dreaming of you hated it what's not to love dude hard not to enjoy that catchy song great lyrics um toe tapin you know now the rest of his stuff doesn't really sound like that dude i mean the guy's got so much music like yeah i would think he probably is all over the map you know yeah man he's all over the place um but yeah that song always stuck out to me i just i like the vocals
Starting point is 00:39:43 and i haven't listened to all of his albums obviously there's so many of his albums obviously there's so many of them, but I don't know if he features too many vocals on the rest of his work. Cool. So, yeah, that was Shook. A song was called Lullaby. And I'll pass it back to you, Traff. All right, Q, this is as new as it gets, at least when we recorded this. This song is brand new, came out today.
Starting point is 00:40:11 Oh, dang. This is a track that would have made my best of, but I'm going to wait. because this is off of a record that's going to come out next year. So Cloak Room, we're both fans of Cloak Room. Their record Disillusion Wave came out in 2022. That was on our best up for that year. For sure. And I think we need to do, if we have it already,
Starting point is 00:40:37 we should do a full episode on that record. So they've been featured on the pod several times. But no, Disillusion Wave, dude. Let's do that next year. So, yeah, they just dropped this brand new song, and it's kind of hard to describe them. Guitar-driven, very melodic. Apparently the term, when they came out in 2012, in 2012, apparently the term stoner emo was used to describe them. We'll see if that rings true on their new record here.
Starting point is 00:41:10 All right, I'm just going to play the song. I'm going to stop yapping. Here you go. This song is called Unbelonging. Yeah, it did. I mean, there are elements of their disillusion wave sound in there, for sure. But yeah, totally different vibe, right? And it's funny that we talked about Jimmy World. I feel like that sounded like Jim Atkins a little bit. Yeah, I did.
Starting point is 00:44:26 You know who else I was reminded of, dude? Guster. Hmm, I could see that. Yeah. Just the kind of easy listening kind of rock. Yeah, yeah. Well, what I liked about that, that was like, like, there was that very clear jangly guitar riff, but then there was just like really fuzzy thing happening in the background that almost sounded like highly like filtered like you were listening to her from like underwater or something like that.
Starting point is 00:44:56 Yeah, yeah. Which is really interesting. But here's a, this is a statement from the band. Unbelonging is a pop song wielding 140 beats per minute of optimism that can fall apart and disheartened just as quickly as it captivates. Cloak Room meets psychedelic furs. So that's how they described it. I didn't get any psychedelic furs personally.
Starting point is 00:45:22 Maybe that's them describing the new record, but I mean, they're specifically saying that that's how they're describing that song. But anyway, that's from their, you know, either their record label of them themselves. Anyway, so that'll be coming out next. year. So yeah, that'll be good because we'll talk about disillusion wave. Maybe we'll do an episode on Disillusion Wave and then there'll be a new record that drops at some point.
Starting point is 00:45:49 But yeah, I liked it. I'm a big fan of these guys. I'm really looking forward to their new record. So again, that band is called Cloak Room. That song was called Unbelonging. What do you got at you? I don't know if I should do this or not because I just really want to play this song now, but it could for sure make it on my best of.
Starting point is 00:46:09 Should I save it? Only you can answer that question, care. You know what? I'm going to play it right now, dude, because I actually just found out about this record not that long ago, so I'm still stoked about it because I love this group, dude. I've loved them for a long time, and it's been a while since they've dropped anything new.
Starting point is 00:46:27 So the band is called Juniorei, Junior a French group. Yeah, yeah, dude. We've done a whole episode of them before. Yeah. They are, oh, man, what is that? Yee, ye. I hate it, dude. I hate it, I hate it, I wouldn't have to say it.
Starting point is 00:46:47 I mean, it's kind of like, I mean, it's kind of like jangle pop or tweed. Yeah, jangle pop, twee, there you go. E. E, Twee. Kind of, they almost sound the same, dude. Yeah. This is kind of like a jazzy element to it sometimes, right? Yeah, it's very.
Starting point is 00:47:03 Like the psychedelic jazz kind of stuff. Yeah. Yeah, dude. And Junori. They do it so freaking good. No one does it like them, dude. Nobody's like they do. That's right, dude.
Starting point is 00:47:17 They hadn't released a record in, since, hang on now. Yeah, okay. They released, so they released now in 2020 called Un Doe Toy, Troy. I'm sorry, guys. Not bad. And this latest release, which came out
Starting point is 00:47:34 back in September of this year, is called Troy Do Un. You're welcome, everyone. They got better that time. So 1, 2, 3, and 321. You see what they did there, dude. I see that. Anyways, man.
Starting point is 00:47:52 Yeah. Get ready to get your socks blown off, bro. I freaking love this song. Dude, they're on. They're secured right now, so we'll see. All right. This one's going to get you, man. All right, here we go.
Starting point is 00:48:06 Junior Ray, this song, is called monumental. Up and go get my socks there across the room. Yeah, man, that's, no one does it like them. Yeah, that's a brand new track. Brand new record. Came out in September. Man, that's great.
Starting point is 00:50:39 I would love to see them live, dude. That would be a phenomenal show. So, man, here's how to do it, dude. Whoever wrote this? It's got it right, man. The Yeah, yeah, noir. Okay. of Guneura.
Starting point is 00:50:56 That's a good way to describe me. Yeah, yeah, noir. So does that mean the traditional, okay. So the traditional, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So the traditional yee sound is more poppy and upbeat. Oh, yeah, dude. Oh, it is for sure. Right, right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:51:13 Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Actually, you know what, dude? I think we played this song a while ago, but here is the perfect example of Yeah, yeah. If you want to just hear it quick. Yeah, remember this dude? I think I played this.
Starting point is 00:51:29 Probably on our junior episode. 7 a.m. by Jacqueline Tayeb. It's 7 in the morning. I've got to get up. Oh, I'm so tired. Well, let's put some music on it will get me going. Don't know something like, I'm going down my...
Starting point is 00:51:56 The one is my father's. The blue one is my mother's. one is my brothers. Mine must have gone with the wind. It's a Monday, isn't it? On English exam today. Help me. I like the Who reference, and then she references Paul McCartney. Paul McCarty later on. Elvis Preslin. Yeah, that's cool, man. Love it.
Starting point is 00:52:56 Anyways, yeah, so they took that and spun it to be a little bit darker, noir. Cool. Yeah, dude. And every album of theirs is just chock full of that. that goodness, you know. All right, Trev. We're running the corner. We got, what, three tracks left? That's right.
Starting point is 00:53:16 What you got? All right. So I think this was a good follow-up. So I never heard of these guys until recently. Q, have you heard of the proper ornaments? Can't say that I have. So this is a London-based indie pop group that took their love of classic psychedelia
Starting point is 00:53:36 and West Coast Folk Rock and crafted their own home-cooked version. That's what their Spotify bio says. And the two founding members, James Horr and Max Oskronald, bonded over their love of an appreciation of music from the Velvet Underground and the Beach Boys, among others. So what more needs to be said to you? I'm going to play a track off of their 2020 record Mission Bells.
Starting point is 00:54:17 The song is called Downtown. Really good. Yeah, I was intrigued by him. I confess, I literally listened to this today. So I got to dive in deeper to these guys because I was just really intrigued by that. Really interesting song. And they've put out quite a... bit of records and they put out like uh they go back to 2013 is when they formed uh and actually
Starting point is 00:57:32 this record was their their last record so i don't know if they are dunskies or what but um mission bells was their latest release but um anyway so again the proper ornaments that song was called downtown off of their 2020 record mission bells all right cue what's your last pick for us all right man so slowly getting through season three of the bear. Okay. And I think I may have already brought it at least one song that I heard on the bear. Yeah, because there's just so much good music on here, man. On that.
Starting point is 00:58:08 Props to whoever curates the music for that. Yeah, dude. For that show, man. Yeah. So I think it was the second episode of season three. There is, I didn't know who covered it until I looked into it. I couldn't tell just from hearing it, but there's a cover of Save It for Later, the song by the English beat, that ska group from the 80s. And it's Eddie Vedder, it turns out.
Starting point is 00:58:38 Wow. Does this, like, quiet acoustic version of it. That's just great, dude. And, man, it just really perked up my ears. Anyways, yes, this is, you'll, if you don't know that it's song by its title, you'll, you should be able to recognize. He keeps it, you know, true to the original except it's just a really pretty acoustic version. So here we go. This is Eddie Vedder singing the English beats. Save it for later. I think we should all just be happy that Eddie's still around, you know?
Starting point is 01:01:40 Because, like, I was just thinking that. He's one of the last of the, of the, he is, the last vocalist of like the great, you know, the four big grunge bands. I mean, Jerry Cantrell's still around of Alice in Chains. But like, when you think of like, obviously Kurt, right, Lane Staley of Alice and Chains, What's his name? Chris Cornell from Soundgarten. The guy, the Stone Tip of Pilots guy, I wish I remembered his name off the top of my head. Do you remember his name, Q?
Starting point is 01:02:16 I'll pull it up right the frick now. Scott Wayland, they're all gone, man, you know? Like, he's a last voice of like the great grunge bands, if you really think about it. Yeah, and he's going strong. Yeah, yeah. Pearl Jam still tours. They still put on new music. but yeah if you know if you know the switching topics to the bear now if you know that show like yeah that's what a perfect song for that show it might have been written for the show who knows um not written but
Starting point is 01:02:45 like recorded and covered for that show yeah yeah I'm not sure maybe not but but either way like the music it's possible though because this you know the single got released after for sure after season three aired so yeah well you remember you brought that cover of um dirty work by by the artist. That was recorded for, what was the name of that show? Hacks. Hacks, yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:11 So, anyway, if you know the show, like, a lot of the music is like that, like very intimate. Oh, you know what, dude? Music. It was released on June 26th.
Starting point is 01:03:22 That was the season premiere. I felt like it was so much longer ago than June. Okay, so this single was released the day after the, okay. So there you go. Anyway, I also, So I think it's cool that they left the saxophone in there.
Starting point is 01:03:35 You know, this is a ska song. Right. It's a very stripped down version of a ska song, but they still had the saxophone in there. But yeah, man, the music on that show is part of the show. Like, you can't have this show without the music in it because it's such a, it's just so integral to the storytelling, you know. What an awesome song. Great song. You know, it's great, dude.
Starting point is 01:04:00 he also quietly sings the phrase can't find a better man at the end of the cover which is of course from Better Man that's funny that's kind of interesting yeah anyways Strah that's how I'm wrapping it up what you got for us
Starting point is 01:04:22 what's your final pick for the night I've got a great song to close us out and it's a it's a pick me up from that song now that that song wasn't great and I loved every second of it. But I'm going to close this out on a high note cue. I don't have my cell phone. Otherwise, I'd look up where I was when I shazam did this song,
Starting point is 01:04:40 but I was out in the wild. That's why, you know, you got to have Shazam on the ready. Because you got to, if there's a great song out on the wild, you've got to be able to know who it is, man. So you can bring it to your podcast. For sure. Right? Everybody has one of those.
Starting point is 01:04:53 I don't know much about this artist, but this song really caught my attention. His name is Michael Kiwanaka. Anyway, he's a British musician of Ugandan heritage. And he makes emotionally engaging contemporary soul music. Hmm. And I personally thought that this song, this song at least, has kind of a 60 psychedelic vibe to it. So maybe some of his earlier stuff was more soul-focused or soul-driven or whatever.
Starting point is 01:05:24 But this song just really stood out to me so much so that I had to bust out the Shazam cue. So here you go. This is off of his, you could almost call it a self-titled record that came on 2019 because the, again, his name is Michael Kiwanaka. This album is simply titled Kiwanaka. So here we go. This song is called Rolling. Exactly he's pulling from, but 60s.
Starting point is 01:08:27 He's doing it right. 70s. I mean, like, yeah, there's a little bit of like Jimmy Hendricks kind of vibes in there a little bit. Yeah, that's true. The way his, fuzzy kind of vocals. Vocals are, yeah, dude. You're right. Yeah, soulful kind of delivery, soul rock.
Starting point is 01:08:41 That's really good. Yeah. Great guitar sound. Great little interludes and breakdowns and stuff. Yeah, awesome song, man. You can you, you could see why I almost fumbled my phone, trying to get it on my pocket and get the Shazam. When are we going to get paid?
Starting point is 01:09:01 When are we going to get paid? By Shazam? Yeah, dude. You mentioned Shazam all the time. Because you've got to have. have it at the ready, man. You know, there's more than one, uh, Shazam is not, does not have the monopoly. That's fine. I've been using it for years and never let me down. I guess it's like, it's actually, can you hand me a Kleenex, dude? Yeah, you're right. But no, I mean, I will say sometimes Shazam does
Starting point is 01:09:21 let me down. And I'm like, how can you not pick this up? You know what I mean? Sometimes it's like, I'm thinking, I'm really thinking hard. Yeah, I use it. Why don't you think harder? Shazam. I use the, I have a pixel phone and I just use the Google version of it. And sometimes it's like, what do we, what are we doing here? If you're not. Yeah. It's clear as day. Why am I letting you listen, use my microphone all the time at all times of the day if you're not
Starting point is 01:09:44 going to just give me this freaking song? Exactly. We had a deal. You know, you can actually let Shazam at least. You can just have it on passively and it'll just log songs if it ever hears it. That's what I've got set up on my pixel. It does that for you? I have to tell it to listen.
Starting point is 01:10:01 No, I had to give it permission to do that. Oh, I know, but like, but it just logs songs. I don't know if it logs them all. time. Okay. I don't know if I have to like turn my screen on to see it. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, that was Michael Kiwanaka. A song was called Rolling off of his self-titled record came out in 2019. And that's how we wrap things up here, Q. So we talked about earlier, possibly closing out with the solo in that new Panda Bear song. But let me propose an alternative cue. Go ahead. I think it would be cool to play the original Save It Free Later.
Starting point is 01:10:40 Sure. By English beat. Because I'm curious how what it sounds like. I don't know that I'm familiar with it. What? Yes, you are. Probably, probably, probably. All right, cool.
Starting point is 01:10:52 But let's put it this way, dude. If I'm familiar with it, Eddie Vedder took it in such a different direction that I didn't recognize it. Oh, you'll recognize it right up to the back, dude. Okay, got it. All right. So we'll close out with that. All right.
Starting point is 01:11:08 So this, yeah, we got one more episode. We'll have one more deep dive queue. I still haven't decided, man. I really got to figure this out. I can, you know, I can help out, Q. I can help out. I feel like we need to go out on top, dude. We got to pick.
Starting point is 01:11:28 We got to do something a little bit more exciting. You know, not the kitchens of distinction wasn't exciting. But I feel like we kind of, we did peace orchestrated. Kitchens of Distinction We gotta close out with a solid one, dude True. We've mellowed out a bit. I mean, shit, we've done 300 plus episodes.
Starting point is 01:11:46 You know, we've covered a lot of great tunes. But surely there's a record that is like, you know, foundational to the two of us and our love for music that we haven't talked about yet. Oh, man. Just think on that. Okay. But that's when we're at our best, dude.
Starting point is 01:12:07 when we're talking about music that's like core to our identity, our musical identity, no pressure. But I'll, yeah, I'll brainstorming Sundays. You know, we actually have a few spreadsheets that we've kept over the years of like, here's some ideas. We should circle back to that. Yeah. All right.
