comes out it might already be out here but yeah if you're like wait a minute that doesn't sound like Jay Mascus you're right that's not him on the vocals that's Lou Barlow he's one of the founding members so he's one of the OGs but he he's the bass player so but yeah Jay Mascus is still appearing on the on the record on vocals there's another single that they put out from this record a couple weeks back called Several Got Away and Jay is singing on that one. So if you like your Dinosaur Jr. because of J.M.askus, don't worry. If he's vocals.

Yeah. Don't worry. But I really liked that. I liked his singing style quite a bit. That was it great. Does he sing in other Dinosaur Jr. albums or a song? Yeah. I'm sure he does.

Already nearing past the halfway mark of this year. Right, dude. Yeah, it's crazy. But I tell you, man, I'm all about it, dude. This is my favorite. The last half of the year, or the last quarter, I should say,

is my favorite quarter of the year. You know, you got to, if you're ranking your quarters, you know, the last three months. Yeah. Come on, man, it doesn't get better. Fall, dude. Yeah, but I, man, I fell in love with the spring. I mean, not like I haven't loved spring up here since I moved to Washington in 2014, but like really getting into it with the flowers and the blooms and doing all the pruning and stuff in my backyard.

I don't know if it can beat, if fall can beat spring anymore, dude. Fair enough. It's such a small window where those flowers. are popping, dude. And it's, I think that's what I like about spring, dude, because it's like, it's just so, just such a small window. But then the, you know, the summer months and the weather's fucking great. But yeah, just, just seeing those flowers for like three weeks and then they're gone.

please please do well anyway this is our monthly mixtape we call it what you heard we both bring five tracks each plus you know the intro and the outro track so 12 tracks total that you're going to hear yeah no rules as to the genre the decade it's whatever whatever we've been listening to lately hence the name, what you heard. And you went first last month, Q, so I'm going to play another track to start us off. Sweet. Let's do it, man. All right, Q, let me see if you remember this record from the New Dust Days, which is the indie blog that we used to run for a hot minute.

You remember this record, Beacon? Oh, hell yeah, dude. Now, are you as shocked as I am that this band has not appeared on this show? Because I was shocked. Yeah, actually. This is the only album I think that I'm familiar with. So Beacon, right? This is 2013.

This would have been right in the thick of new dust. Yes, yes, yes. So it's a duo electronic act. Yeah. What gets you back into this album? Do you know? This is one of those albums that I've had like saved in my, Spotify library and sometimes I just scroll and see oh let me listen to this this album again it's been

a while since I've seeked out this kind of music I still don't really anymore but sometimes it still hits right dude yeah this is bringing me back dude I'm gonna have to re-save this to my library yeah so we're gonna play a track that that has always been my favorite track on the record so here you go this is again a group called beacon this is off of their 2013 album the ways we separate rate. And this song is called Between the Waves. Good stuff, man. There's a lot of good stuff like that coming out around that time. Reminds me a lot of sawn, S-O-H-N. I was a big fan of this stuff back in the day. It's kind of dark, right? Like dark. Dark, synth, brooding down tempo. Yeah, man. No surprise. They were on and possibly are still on Ghostly International, which is perfect, perfect record label

for that kind of stuff. Oh, totally. Guess what, dude. As it always happens, they are putting on a new record this year. Of course. So I'll have to check that out. So, yeah, they've got a new record coming out.

Oh, in five days, dude, August 7th. So I haven't listened to any, I don't think a single track from them besides what was on this record. Same. So I have no idea what they sound like. Like have they evolved? I'm sure they have.

you know so yeah anyway so yeah i'll check that out how dry a cinder but yeah so go listen to it now it's already out so we go again this was beacon the song was called between the waves off of their 2013 record the ways we separate and i'm going to throw it to you for your first track cue when are you got for us all right dude i think you probably know this because you visited us recently ronan found his way to some asa bass man and the thing with spotify I don't know how it happens, you know, because usually what he does is he's listening to a song and then he'll scroll down to similar artists or he'll click on like that artist's radio, you know, so that's like the radio playlist that just plays similar artists or artists from the same era. And he found the sign by Ace of Base. And then you were with us, Trav, at that record store.

And they had just random cassette tapes like on their little display. wall in the back and running goes are you kidding me right now and grabs he said that i don't ever yeah dude it's his favorite thing to say right now that's funny are you kidding me right now dude he used it perfectly you know i know and he grabbed he saw the sign that this must have been the album that blew them the fuck up dude because uh all that she wants is on there don't turn around yeah the sign from 93 that's the album and we're gonna play a track from it dude because so we got i got got a boombox for Ronan. And old school boombox, looks like probably early 2000s boombox.

Play CDs, plays cassettes, Traff. It's got a digital FM tuner, Travis, which was a big deal back then. Anyways, so here we go. We're going to play track three off of the sign from Asa Bass. And this pairs perfectly with Beacon, I think. I mean, there's no better time than now to play Asa Bass. So here you go. This one's called Young and Proud.

Well, Q, I don't know about you. but all I had in my head was the scene of Will Ferrell and Chris Catan op on their heads in their car. I mean, Not at the Roxbury? Not at the Roxbury, yeah. They were doing it to what is love, right? Yeah.

Maybe I don't hurt. Which an all-time banger, dude. Which, you know how much this dates us, dude, that that's the reference you're bringing up? I know, I know, dude. Come on. But yeah. No. Yeah.

Totally. what a banger so when did that come out 93 okay well guess what the what is love came up before that so okay okay what's your point i was good just to me it reminds me like dance dance revolution and the sure the bangers ever on those did you ever play that i didn't uh i played guitar i played the controller version of it i never got on the dance pads dude i never did it in the arcade But I was really fucking good at it on the controller, dude. Really good. Yeah, dude.

I've been banging out to that song. And this whole, this whole freaking record, dude, for the last, like, month. It's awesome that he's got his first music player. And I think it's kind of cool that it's a consent player. Yeah. Yeah. And Ace Bass, is the only one that is his. Yeah, that's cool.

I have some CDs left in the class. I saw, I traded them to you, Trave, not that long. go. So I got rid of most of the good ones. But yeah, he listens to a lot of Josh Grobin, which is Sarah's one of Sarah's loves. Josh Groven. Josh Grobin. Yeah, some Manatee commune. We have like one of his CDs. Anyways, yeah, dude, he's a bass in your face. Pass it back to you, brother, what you got. All right. Now, Q, I know that you're not as big a fan as this group as I am. but I have their best of on vinyl,

and so I busted it out and listened to it. A group called the clientele. Barning. Yeah, well. Well, we saw them open for Spoon, Q. Do you remember that? I wasn't there for that, dude. See, that's confusing to me.

I feel like it wasn't there for that. Okay. Yeah, I don't know. I don't think I caught that one. I think I only saw Spoon once in Deep Ellum. That does not compute in my brain, Q. We saw them several times. You've lived there your whole, you still live close enough to go see bands in Deep Ellen.

Of course, of course. But I'm just saying like I remember seeing Spoon with with you several times. But maybe not. I don't know, man. Anyways. Either way. So this is a, the best way to describe their sound is almost like a, like a dream pop mixed with like Brit pop kind of sound. Yeah.

Yeah. That checks out, dude. Yeah, but he's got this incredible voice and he's got the reverb tone that he gets on his guitar is like amazing. Very clean guitar tone with just drenched in reverb, but not in like a shoegaze reverb wall of sound type thing. More just very like I said, jangly, dreamy. And this song has always always been a favorite of mine. So here we go. We're going to listen to the clientele, one of my favorite bands of all time.

I think there's just something special about them, Q. So maybe I'm going to convert you right here right now to a clientele fan. So this is off of their 2009 record Bonfires on the Heath. And the song is called Harvest Time. Back to the leaves go shivering my scared crows watch the verges of life. I mean, but no one's there. Harvest time through summertime. Harvest time.

It's harvest time. I mean, what's not to like, Traff? That's what I've been asking. I've been asking you for years. I don't think you ever, okay, I don't think you ever said you didn't like him. You just never really connected. It never like tickled a pickle.

Well, now your pickles's, it's getting ticked. I mean, what needs to happen is this. And this, hey, we preach it, Treve. And I haven't been practicing it for this band. Not once have I pressed play. Come on it. Hey, dude, that's just, that's probably what it is. That's probably what it is.

Well, you got to listen to strange geometry, dude. It is one of the best records of that decade. It's so good. Just a year before we graduated high school, dude. Yeah, that's probably like when we saw, that Spoon show was so I got to see them do a lot of stuff out of this record. Here's my guest, Trow.

Dude, it's so good, man. I probably missed that show because I was, I probably had some freaking, like, obligation with a girlfriend at this time or some dumb, dumb thing like that. Classic. That's my best guess, dude. Yeah, that's probably, that's probably true. Strange Geometry is one of those records that has probably been on the list of albums to cover on No Filler since we thought about this show, dude.

And that's, it's shocking. but probably because you were you were always like let's just do this instead you know we just pivoted every time I maybe brought it up but no let me ask you this chav should that be my first listen yes okay but they have I don't know what's looking like six other albums underneath that one travi you're telling me none of those are worth

me listening to as far as like Strange geometry is a good entry point too that's all okay okay uh and I know for a fact that it's a no-filler record. All right. I'll give it a while. Now, I'm not going to mow the lawn with this one. But dude, there's a album, there's a track on here called Geometry of Lawns, okay?

Are you kidding me? No. What the fuck? There's a track on strange geometry called Geometry of Lawns. Okay. So you have to listen to it while you're mowing. See, that's the thing. I only mow my lawn like every week and a half or two weeks.

So what's queued up then for the next one? Um, well, it's, uh, clientele. Paul McCartney's new album. I haven't listened to it's new album? Brand new album. I didn't know that. Just came out, dude. It's supposed to be great.

The Boys of Dungeon Lane is what it's called. I'm guessing it's some new, some guest singer on every single track. Ringo Star is the only one that guests. Okay, that's cool. That's legit. Because I think his last one was a, it was a collab effort, right? Yeah, okay. No, I've heard great things about it.

Sweet. Okay. That's awesome. I got to get it in, man, because it's got to make it to invest of it. It's a fucking Paul McCarty. Well, that's dope. Speaking of, dude, hey, speaking of, my next track is a Paul McCarney song. Because.

Not off of this record? Not off of the new one. Okay. So my brother-in-law, Isaiah, he's a big garage sale guy. And he resales. He goes to find retro games and retro consoles. and he resells him. Anyways,

anytime, if he finds anything, if he sees a box of records that he thinks maybe there could be some good, he's not, he's not really like heavy into music like me. I've told him what to look to not,

not to buy. Don't buy Robert Streisand, you know, don't buy Herb Albert and the Tijuana whatever's. Like, I've given him the list of like what you're going to find at every goodwill. Yeah,

every value village. Yeah. Right. Exactly. No, that one, I would love to have, actually. That's like one of those holy grail ones.

So he brought home a box of records for me to flip through. I just flipped through him today. I picked, I grabbed some of them. One of them was a very good copy of McCartney's Ram from 1971, which has one of my favorites of his Monkbury Moon to Light. I brought that as a song. I remember that. Because it sounds, dude, it sounds just like man, man.

It sounds like man, and even just, like man man. Even the title sounds like a man man. Totally. Yeah, totally. And it's got some great, great songs on it. So I put that record on earlier today just to play through it all. I say it was hanging out with us. So we're just going to play a song from Ram, dude. So we're going to actually play the next song after Monk Mary Moondalight.

This one's called Eat at Home. Yeah, man, like you were saying off mic, he's he he might be the best songwriter of all time guarantee you there's a lot so many people that would say no fucking way but yeah dude I mean as far as just prolific and just diverse in sound and I mean yeah

she just keeps going dude how how many fucking songs can you have in your brain that's what I'm saying dude yeah and they're all they're all it's like it's breathing it's breathing for him. Right. But not as much, right? Yeah. But, but yeah, dude. I always love songs that are to just feel like they came out of just. I mean, it's him and Linda just singing about fucking in bed, I think. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's just, sure. But like it.

So many of his songs, dude, are just. But I, yeah, I like the, the songs about just daily. daily, daily joys, right? Oh, so many of his songs are like that, man. Yeah, songs that you can just sing. Dude, that probably came out of them just laying around the house, man. And he's just, and like, if you're just, if you're Paul McCartney, like, you know, you just stumbling over all the songs around, just laying around, you know, they just come out.

I'm going to stick with my original flow here. So I've been sitting on this for a couple months because I'd never, I don't know, never really made sense where to put it. But that was just good at time as any. So as I mentioned to you, Q, have I mentioned yet that I acquired all four Pure Mood's records? Have I mentioned that yet? I think you've mentioned that, Trevor. Okay. The group, if you want to call them to a group, Enigma is behind the Return to Innocence song that everybody knows, right? Return to Innocence. Oh, yeah.

Hi. Oh, huh. Was that not? Did I not nail it, Traff? I feel like I'm sitting on the couch in that commercial. That infomercial is playing right now. Yeah. That infomercial is on the TV right now.

And maybe space, maybe we're watching space coast coast coast to coast, dude. that would have been in the 2000s but yeah I'm pretty sure the Pyramoods commercials ran for a long time now I think dude I think in between

I picked up the record the actual record that this song was on it's called The Cross of Changes And when you say record you mean CD I bought it on CD of course

Yeah Anyway, and I'm not going to play the, there's only one reason I'm playing the song. So we're going to skip ahead. It's a nine minute track. The part that I want you to listen to, your ears, if you know the song, I know if Mitchell's listening, his ears are going to perk up on a certain part of the song and he's going to be floored in the same way that I was. Where I was like, am I hearing what I think I'm hearing? So does someone sample this?

Yes, there's a sample in this track that blew me clean out of my chair and out of the window. And I was probably on the sidewalk when I first heard it. So here we go. This is a song by Enigma called I Love You and I'll Kill You, which is a cool name. And I'm going to jump into like the middle. Like I said, I'm literally playing this so we can react to the sample. So here we go. I mean, did they get permission from Ozzy?

I can see them not getting permission from, you know, the couple, the singers that they stole the sample from for return to innocence. I can see them not getting permission from them and getting away with it. But no freaking way that they don't have to give permission from Sabbath. But yeah, if you don't know what that was, let me just play 10 seconds from Black Sabbaths, the wizard. So I got to hear. That's the harmonica. a little bit. Yeah, which is cool.

But yeah. Well, they had to like, yeah, syncopated, whatever. Right, right. The beat. So, yeah, that, that samples actually played earlier on in the track. But I wanted to just hear that sample and then hear like that pretty cool guitar solo, which, which. Yeah, that was cool. Which, um, we're not expecting on an enigma.

But yeah, dude. Wow. You know, the 90s had this interesting, like, spiritual kind of thing going on. That was awesome. Oh, dude. The new age shit, dude. New age. Yes.

The new age stuff, man. And that's kind of what the Pyramids CD series was all about and that's what this group was all about That's why, you know, Enigma is like It's this one guy His name is Michael Cretu Probably mispronouncing that

But like he is the visionary behind it But like he purposely Well who's the main vocals? Oh who knows man He's sampling all sorts of peeps probably Oh I thought it was a It could be this lady here Andreas Andreas Hardey

I think he had a a longtime partner that he collaborated with. Well, Return to Innocence has a female lead. Well, he sings a lot. Her and this guy. It is, but Return to Innocence had that sample taken from. Sure. Defong and Igay DeWana,

who he just stole the stole without. Isn't that ironic that don't you think? Where, hang on. Now, where is Enigma from? America. No, he's not from America, dude. Okay. He is, he is from, he's Romanian German.

I was going to say, I just think we stole enough from the Native American stage. But no, he did, he did, they did bring a lawsuit and won, so anyway. Okay, good. But yeah. Anyway, so yeah, if you like that kind of stuff, it's an interesting listen. The Enigma Records are like that, very, very new age, interesting background music. But yeah, dude, when I heard that, I was like, wait a gosh darn second. Well, there's no denying it, man.

Yeah, so if you look at the Wikipedia here, he sampled songs from several artists on this record, including Vangelis, U2, Genesis, and Black Sabbath. So he's sampling left and right, dude. He wanted to make this, like, weird kind of cosmic project where it's like, it's this amalgamation of all sorts of musical genres and stuff like that. it's supposed to be. That's what the name of the project was. And most of it was like, you know, taken from like, anyway. So again, that was, I'll love you, I'll kill you.

Featuring a sampled harmonica from Black Sabbaths, the wizard, which is the only reason I brought this track for us to listen to. I liked it, dude. I really liked it, actually. Hey, it's a great track. Don't get me wrong. But we weren't going to listen to nine minutes just to get to that, or five minutes or whatever.

It was just good. Anyway. All right, Q. So now we got another 180 in store. I'm sure of it. No, actually. this one's going to I think this one pairs well with at least the kind of breathy the breathiness interesting of the voice um and Travis this so um I just I totally forgot that we did this for a while and I think we need to start doing it again trav we were doing what you heard playlists now but now the only problem with that is I mean we're already paying for Spotify I know you are and I am

I mean, we're shitting. We're also at the same time. We're shit. I know. I know, dude. But anyways, like, I think it was cool to have. So we had every song that was featured on a Whatcher episode, we would turn that into its own playlist. So each Whatcher heard episode had us on playlist so that you could quickly.

Anyways, so I went back and was just listened through to some of these. I forget which one it was. But that doesn't matter. I think it was a watch aired from a few years ago back when we were doing these playlists. And I revisited this artist named Beauty Queen. There's a song of hers from, an album, an EP from 2019 called This Time Around that I brought on what you heard way back then. And hey, wouldn't you know it? She has a new album. And I gave it a listen all the way through. It's a delight, dude.

A freaking delight, man. So we're going to play the first track on the record. This one's called Blade of Light, which is the title track. Just like that light. I can always count on you, I have to say something corny like that. It just comes out, dude. What is this shub genre, dude, of Dream Pop? If you want to call it that.

Like, what is it? No, because it's prevalent, man. It has been for the last decade or so. This is, this is like its own little, you know, a little slice of. Yeah, I know what you mean. Because there's lots of artists that sound like that. And this, that's not an insult. It's not a dig.

But I was just saying I like it when I always like it when the drums are doing or like at a pace that doesn't align really with like the softness of the like a drum and bass type. Oh, yeah. Over a dream pop soft kind of.

So it's dropping the same day as that Dinah Dinosaur Jr. Oh, boy, is that going to be a great freaking day? Damn. Okay, so they've put out two singles so far from this new record called Mero Deep.
