Be the right club. Be the right club today.
That's better than most.
That is better than most. Better than most.
Expect anything different? Better than most.
Expect anything different. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the No Lang a podcast.
My name is DJ.
We have got we've got a skinny crew today, light crew today.
Me and my good friend, Icarito, Neil Shuster.
Neil, how are you?
Big week on the PGA Tour, as you can see, I'm, I'm
doing fantastic. I had a fantastic weekend. We'll get into, but I can't wait. Yeah. The
kid, they thought he was dead, you know, maybe Lazarus equation for a day, but good stuff
this weekend. I love it. We are of course going to talk a little bit of PGA tour, Aldrich
pot Gator, your winner at the rocket classic in Detroit, but we're going to talk a lot of other stuff too. We Aldrich pot Gator, your winner at the rocket classic
in Detroit. But we're going to talk a lot of other stuff too. We're going to check in
on some winners around the world. And then I think, you know what, we're going to talk
a lot of personal golf stuff. We both had a lot of golf stuff going on. We got to take
a trip recently, hang out with some PGA tour players. We're going to talk about some observations
from that. We both played in a couple of major championships, albeit roost majors, but we've got some takeaways from that. And then we're big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big,
big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big,
big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big,
big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big,
big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big,
big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big,
big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, off between starts during that time. You made a visit to the titles performance center at Woburn for two days to work with title is
tour rep, Liam McDougall and get his setup dialed. And one start
later, safe to say that trip seems to be paying off. Aldrich
is gaming a title is Pro V one X plus golf ball, which gives
him a little more height and spin than his previous ball.
Another example why it's so important to get fit for not just
your clubs, but your
golf ball as well. Make sure you're playing the right model
for your game. The driver, the thing everybody's talking
about with potgater GT two nine degree, which of course
gives him tons of speed. Also, the stability and control he
needs to play his best. Liam actually added a little bit of
weight in the club head, which gave him some more stability
and control that was obviously on full display this week, especially in that
playoff. Some of those drives also going into play for the first time
this week, all new T 106 through nine irons and a T 154 and five
irons again, seeing tons of added control and height. He's also
got the new two T 250 utility two iron in the bag for wedges. S M 10 46 F 50 F 54 S and a wedge works 60 K star.
And lastly, Scotty Cameron Newport style double Oh nine M,
which what was used to roll in the winning putt,
the best players in the world are dialed into every part
of their equipment set up head to title is dot com
to find a fitting near you.
Neil, can I two things there? equipment setup head to title is dot com to find a fitting near you.
Neil, can I two things there?
One is the fitting center and woe burns getting a ton of burn.
I love that Adam Scott getting all dialed for the US Open.
And the fact that pot keepers plan a nine degree driver,
it feels like he's hitting it 150 in the air.
That blows me away.
I mean, it's like he's got one ninety four the air. That blows me away. I mean, it's like a
194 ball speed. It's just moon shots, man. Like the way that I can't, once you start to see people activating the left foot, the ground force stuff, like that guy does it big time. It's, it's, but
I will also say Grazerman packing some punch too. He's hit the out of experience in the game. And he's got a lot of experience in the game. And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game.
And he's got a lot of experience in the game. And he's got a lot move backwards during the swing. And like, he's not trying to do that. That's just how it works.
It's, it's nuts.
Well, and I mean, just going to get it out of the way.
A guy with a world-class dumpy like that,
getting, getting elevated.
Yeah.
Like at impact.
What tools to use, man.
So impressive.
I mean, really, really crazy move.
Now I, you know, the rocket,
don't call me a mortgage classic.
Uh, tough, tough one today, Dej, that just true,
true bomb and gouge stuff.
It was a little bit of that. It wasn't, well,
let's get into the X's and O's and we can,
we can circle back to some of the, uh, some of the takeaways. Aldrich Pocketer,
your winner, as we mentioned in a five hole playoff over Max Grazerman and,
uh, Chris Kirk was hanging around.
I think for what was that two of the playoff holes Michael
Thorbjornsson Jake Knapp.
You're rounding out the top five there at minus 21.
Yeah, I watched a lot of this golf golf tournament today.
Very very very very very very very very very bunched leaderboard
I would say at which in a lot of ways and on a lot of days kind of makes for exciting times.
Birdies flying around, you know, the haymakers getting thrown.
I wouldn't say that was one of these days.
And I don't want to do a bunch of backhanded stuff towards towards Aldrick.
He's 20 years old and change. And he just won on the PGA tour.
I feel like that has to be the headline.
That's incredible for anybody to do that. He obviously does it with with some what did
what did Randy say about the he was talking about O'Neill Cruz and the Pirates. He's got
some loud tools and that's and that's how I think how I feel about Pac Eater. It is
it's a lot of ball speed. He ball struck it really well. I don't think the chipping and putting
has blown anybody away right now.
The data golf plot looks a little like that
Star Trek logo, you know, just a big,
a big peak at the top on the driving distance section
and quite a crater there in some of the chipping, but.
Yes.
You know, credit to him 22 under on a,
on a PJ tour golf course.
You can take that in any direction you like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I think at least two of the first three, it's like driver 40 yard pitch, you know, like,
so when you say loud tools, it's like one specific loud tool. And I'm not here to get into a distance
debate with you. Whatever the causes are, what, yeah, everyone's hitting it far. It just, it's
not really what I don't want to see. Uh, the PGA tour players play strap golf, you know, play like it's like playing forest park. It's like,
um, you know, it's always giving me shit cause it's a 6,100 yard golf course.
And it's, it's like, yeah, if you're hitting the driver, well, yeah,
you should shoot under par. You know what I mean? And,
and we've been to Detroit golf club. I like that golf course, you know,
it's, it's kind of a classic design and it sounds like they're going to rip it
up now. Yeah. You know, like Tyler ray. Yeah. Final, final putt drop. We're going to,
we're going to change it up. And it's just, I don't know,
maybe I shouldn't feel this way,
but I don't want to say it's a shame that these guys just bring it to its knees,
but it's a little bit like, ah, man, I wish that was,
I wish that was a tougher test for them. I guess is, it's just where I'm at.
Totally. Yeah. No, I'm yes. I think that's well said.
And I think there's a lot of,
I still have a soft spot for some reason in my heart for this tournament
because I think for a long time, I mean, believe it or not,
we were bitching about some stuff eight years ago or so.
Of course.
And one of those things was like, man, no golf, no PJ Tour
golf in the upper Midwest.
What are we doing?
You know, Michigan, Minnesota, obviously Illinois, Wisconsin. Like, let's get these states involved. PJ Tour. What are we doing? You know, just Michigan, Minnesota, obviously Illinois, Wisconsin.
Like let's get these states involved, PJ Tour.
What are we doing?
And it's just, is kind of a massive bummer
that the two events that came out of that
are this one and the 3M, which are just,
they're kind of tough watches, man.
They're pretty sloggy.
They're not a lot of,
there's just not a lot of downside risk it doesn't feel like.
It's a lot of like, yeah, you missed the green. He'll probably get up and down or, you know, a lot of the guys like, you know,
getting into the playoff, what was that? The fourth playoff hole
guys going driver eight iron into the par five. It's just a lot. It's very,
17 he hit driver nine iron into both 14 and 17 this afternoon. And it's just like,
yeah, okay. That's not, I'm not going to freak
out about that. But I like, again, I liked that golf course. I thought it was challenging.
I almost wish that I saw those guys challenged by it the same way that I feel when they play
a Pinehurst number two. And the fact that there's just not that many courses left that
can make me watch something where I'm like, man, those guys are experiencing the same
frustration that I am. Maybe that's some of the joy. I want to see a challenge. And if you have one tool,
specifically, like Potgeater, one loud tool, you can kind of bring a place like Detroit Golf Club
to its knees. But I will say, it's always fun to have a playoff, right? But I felt like the
playoff was a little bit like every Netflix series this year.
I felt the same way at the Canadian Open where it's like-
Did this need to be 10 episodes, man?
Exactly.
It's like, man, the first two are bangers.
You know, I'm locked in like, oh, Chris Kirk,
we've got the wily old vet.
Yeah.
You know, Grazerman's trying to get his first win.
He's been sniffing around.
And then here's Pac-Eater, you know, Grazerman is trying to get his first win. He's been sniffing around. And then
here's pocketer, you know, just like, like a true bomb threat, you know, 20 year old. And then it's
just an alligator arms playoff. Like, no, I can't, I can't possibly make that putt. I couldn't, you
know, Chris Kirk on the first, on the 18th, Dej question for you. not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, know, not necessarily like me, but I was thinking about this, you know, I was thinking about
this, you know, I was thinking about this, you know, I was thinking
about this, you know, I was thinking about this, you know, I was thinking
about this, you know, I was thinking about this, you know, I was thinking
about this, you know, I was thinking about this, you know, I was thinking
about this, you know, I was thinking about this, you know, I was thinking
about this, you know, I was thinking about this, you know, I was thinking
about this, you know, I was thinking about this kept me engaged. I think what can be a little hard about tournaments like this is I was thinking about this through, you know, not necessarily like narratives, but just kind of trying to put everything in perspective as I'm watching.
And I'm thinking like, oh, well, if Max Grazerman wins in a way, I'm like, I think that's a cool progression.
Even starting back to, you know, I said the 3M already, but like going back to 3M last year and being like, man, who's that guy?
And then you watch a couple more of these events.
You're like, oh, there's that guy again.
You watch a couple more.
Oh man, there's that guy.
He's, he's right on the cusp of knocking it down.
You know, who knows?
And obviously, you know, he's a misput here or there away from being talked about as the
champion today, but that to me, that to me makes sense in my head.
And maybe it'll end up being the same thing with Pocketer,
but the thing that's really tough and, again,
flashing red lights.
He's 20 years old.
He needs to be refined.
He's going to grow as a tour player.
He now has job security.
I'm sure he's going to add a lot of tools and clean up a lot
of the bad stuff.
But a lot of that game.
And I felt the same way watching him in Mexico was just like,
I don't know that this is necessarily the first step on the
way to winning like a US Open.
Yes.
You know, and I think that's the sales in my pond here.
I love this.
Well, I think that's this to say it concisely.
That's the sales pitch for these events is like to watch
steps, the preamble, right?
Like to watch the intro before they get to kind of the main becoming a main
character. And what's tough about a skillset like that is like, I don't know
if that's going to happen again. Would love to be proven wrong. 20 years old.
I can't believe you won on the PJ tour. That's amazing, but it's, uh,
it gives you a little bit of a weird feeling when you're like,
I, that might've been more golf course than it was. It was player.
I hope that doesn't sound unfair. No, no. I, I agreed with you.
When I looked at the leaderboard,
there are a couple of spots like throughout the afternoon as I'm chasing my
kid around where I'm like, man, this true again, back to the Netflix analogy,
it feels like a button. I'm an avid golf watcher.
So like I know who Nico Echavararia is. I know Max Grazerman, but
like if my dad's watching, like there's no A-lister on here. Right. But, but when you
watch too much Netflix, there's like certain actors that show up in the same HBO show,
you know, like, Oh, I remember that guy, you know, from, uh, from like, what, whatever.
What was that? Uh, space show? Um, with the profit. Oh, uh, um, station 11, savings 11. I think that's a good question. I think that's a good question. I think that's a good question. I think that's a good question. I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question.
I think that's a good question. I think that's a good question. I think that's a good question. I think that's like, man, I actually think this is kind of interesting. Like Jake Knapp, Chris Kirk, Max Grazerman.
I think I know each one of these guys kind of has some interesting stuff.
I like those guys, but like none of them to me are winning an Oscar.
You know what I'm saying?
So it's a tough, and you know, then you got like more college nowhere to be found.
Patrick Cantlay nowhere to be found.
So it's like a hard, you know, and then it's like, yeah, Michael Thorbjornsson, maybe, you know, maybe that was his first role at the rocket classic.
That was his first movie, you know, maybe, you remember that one? Yeah. And that's what I'm
talking about with pocketers. Like, yeah, maybe he's going to go on to do some other stuff, but I
don't know. It might've just been the right, right. It's like, none of the right role. I'm like,
I don't think any of these guys are one of the major, you know? So then it's kind of like,
man, am I really going to watch this? Like, yeah, well I am because I'm about to talk about it. But like, if I was my dad,
I'd be like, man, I'm probably going to go do some yard work or something.
And I think what does make a difference and what can salvage, you know,
an event like that is just, it comes down to like golf course stuff and yeah,
either recognizable holes that really stand out that you want to watch or holes
that have some downside or shots that you want to watch or holes that have some downside or
Shots that kind of are thrilling or greens that are really cool. It's just it's a tough
It's kind of a tough sell for everybody involved and I truly do
think that
Detroit golf club rocket mortgage all like it kind of seems like they're checking all the boxes and there's a lot of cool
It seems like they're trying to make it better every year, but it just, it's a, it's a
tough sell, it's tough sell.
Well, it's, it's a little bit, I'm going to talk out of both sides of my mouth
a little bit here where it's like, Hey, not every tournament has to be.
Even CBS is saying that like Nance, you know, he's not there.
Like it's, it's kind of like guys, we're not going to fake it.
Like this is a signature event.
And that's, I appreciate that.
Um, so, uh, and it's like when the a signature event. And that's, I appreciate that. So,
and it's like when the tour used to be much more localized, this hits, right? And I thought there
was a pretty good crowd out there. That's why to go back to the playoff thing, I disagree with you.
In theory, I like the idea of bouncing around, you know, don't know what's next. I don't think
that's the right thing to do though. I'm since the
Canadian Open, I've started to feel strongly that they should just move the T's up. They should
they should change the hole the 18th hole. So that because you saw like all these fans are trying to
rush out to 15. And then there's nobody there. And so it creates this like weird energy where
it's like, oh, now it looks empty. And you almost feel like, man, when is this going to be over?
Even as a viewer on TV, because like there's no juice on site.
Whereas like travelers, you know, when they play that 18th hole and everybody's
coming into that arena, I really like playoffs like that.
I think that's fair.
And I also think that as a viewer, you get, you know, you get context on like,
Oh, right rough.
Remember what he did there last time?
Oh, he's above the hole. He just missed that putt. Like I, I see what you're saying
there.
Put the pin in a different spot or tell them before, Hey guys, if we, if we go to a second
playoff hole, we are going to move the tees up or we are going to change the cup or you
know, there's, there's a few different variables you could introduce to create some, um, so it's not
just, uh, if it's a bad golf hole, like, you know, the 18th for the Canadian open was like, not a,
like it wasn't a great hole for a playoff. So, but I just, I don't think it's fair to ask the
spectators to rush around the golf course to watch like they're there, you know, make it easy on
people to watch the golf. I think that's a disservice to like the product. Basically. I think that's fair. Maybe it's a, it might be a case by case.
What's your 18th hole, you know, what's your play or even just what's your
playoff hole let's decide before the tournament, you know, before the,
before the end, although I guess you can't move P I don't know.
It's a hard one. It's a little bit of a damn,
but you have the infrastructure set up around 18, you know,
and like, let's say somebody's family that you can ask the baby in the,
and you know, the wags to go rush around to the 14th hole. I don't know. I just
felt like that was a unnecessary and it, and it made me feel like this, uh, this Netflix
series is two episodes too long. I think that's, that's fair. I can see you there. Max Grazerman
knocking on the door mentioned that going back
to that 3M.
I mentioned these were his finishes at the end of last summer
here starting at the 3M second, second T 33 T 28 T 2 4th T
24 T 7.
That's kind of through the American Express.
I mean, Guy was like playing some absolute golf, probably
fair to assume that that wasn't going to stay quite that hot. Uh, been stuck in neutral a little bit, still, still
playing decent, making a lot of cuts and, you know,
it was leading the core and a feet of putts made huge as of a month ago.
I don't know if he still is, but he's always, he's a guy that guy rolls the
rock, man. He does also like kind of shout out a sneaky solid year for a young, you know, young relative, like, uh, to his playing experience player T 32 at the masters, T 33 at the PGA T 23 at the U S open.
So solid campaign at the majors so far, but, uh, had been missing kind of another chance to, to win, uh, anything you saw from him.
You played in a program with him, didn't you? Last year. Yeah, last year at Castle Pines at BMW.
Great, really engaging guy.
So oldest of three brothers,
want to give the Grazerman family a shout out.
Okay, so his younger brother,
High achievers.
Reid Grazerman just won the Ike,
which is a big golf association event
that I dream of qualifying for out at Hamilton farms.
It was like 900 degrees. Like all the, all this content I saw from it,
these guys are just like puddles of sweat
and he wanted the playoff.
So, you know, Max couldn't get it done today,
but his brother got it done last week at the Ike.
So shout out to Reed and then Dean,
his other brother was also in the Ike.
And I think he finished like top 10.
Their dad is a Columbia,
I think an economics professor at Columbia business school. They live in the,ke and I think he finished like top 10. Their dad is a Columbia, I think an economics
professor at Columbia Business School. They live in the, from New Jersey, from Short Hills, like,
you know, just good stuff, man. High achieving family. Like,
his parents have a, have a great story. I know we've talked about in the past, I think Ukrainian,
like moved from Ukraine, I think back towards the end of the Soviet Union, just a, just as
awesome family, it seems from afar. I've, I've only spent a little bit of time with Max, but I was a guy that I root for
just since then.
Same here. And, and yeah, just keeps putting himself in position.
Like he's come up short and, you know, down the stretch in a couple of
tournaments, but this felt better than Wyndham last year. You know what I mean?
Like I felt like he, like he was right there. He just, you know, we got to make one of those pots and one of those five playoff holes.
He had a couple looks and, and, uh, just couldn't jar it.
Well, I got a couple other news and notes from, from the rocket classic, but before
we get there, man needs more sun, Neil, that's right.
Here's your formal invitation to spend less time behind your screens, more time
outside with friends in the sun.
Why it's really good for your physical and mental health. And it makes you feel better. Here's your formal invitation to spend less time behind your screens more time outside with friends in the Sun
Why it's really good for your physical and mental health and it makes us happier and can it happen on the golf course?
Of course, absolutely at oars and Alps. It makes sunscreen for men more specifically
You can count on them for hard-working formulas that are good for your skin. No tropical sense. Not going to spell like a piña colada.
It's lightweight, non greasy, non sticky, no white cast or
chalky residue.
Easy to use travel friendly for reapplying on the go.
There's hands free format sprays, mist sticks, so your hands
stay clean.
Obviously, that's important on the golf course.
You know that.
Go outside.
Get you some sunshine. It's free, Neil. The sunshine, not the sunscreen.
For sure.
And with ORS and ALPS, you can stay out as long as you want. Use code NLU15 to get 15% off ORS and ALPS, sun care and skin care today.
NLU15 for 15% off. I know a lot of people were waiting for that code.
A lot of people asking like,
hey, you guys doing those ors and alps trees.
What's that code?
What's that code?
It's summertime.
I need the code.
And honestly, it makes me,
if you forget to put on sunscreen before the round,
you hate doing it during the round,
but this makes it a lot easier
because it does just like,
it gets into your skin quick.
Your hands don't get as greasy.
It's a good quality product and I would highly recommend it.
I said this a couple of weeks ago,
but you know how good a sunscreen has to be for me to be like, man,
I got really looking forward to putting this sunscreen on love though. I love the
smell or I'm not actively avoiding it. Like I'm not saying like, Oh man,
it might be worth getting burned because I don't want my hands to be slimy.
Like that, that's a bad attitude.
I shouldn't be doing that.
So Orz and Alps is helping with that.
Shout out to Orz and Alps.
Chris Kirk was the third member of our playoff.
I don't want to say out of nowhere, a little out of nowhere, you know, T12 at the U S open.
I kind of miss that.
If I'm being super honest, a couple of missed cuts and some kind of middling starts before that.
Just a guy that kind of hangs around pops his head out every, you know,
every eight months, it feels like.
And a guy that has been well documented
on this podcast, personal struggles he's gone through, overcome a lot of that stuff.
It's a guy that I feel like we have a lot of context with as golf fans.
Now we've watched a lot of different phases
of his career and a guy I would have been absolutely tickled to see get another PGA tour victory today,
but came up just short.
I mean back to the movie Netflix analogy, he's like the PGA tour,
like character actor. God, I love, yeah, cause you know, he just pops up and he's,
he's a, he's a gamer though. What? And last of a dying breed hits a draw.
Yeah. Not a lot of those, not a lot of, what do you say to those guys? Do, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it don't think that's that hard. I really don't. I think that that's part of the job.
So he had to handle it like a pro.
And I was like, yeah, I don't think that's that hard. I really don't. I think that that's part of the job.
So he had to handle it like a pro.
And I was like, yeah, I don't think that's that hard.
I really don't. I think that that's part of the job.
So he had to handle it like a pro.
And I was like, yeah, I don't think that's that hard.
I really don't. I think that that's part of the job.
So he had to handle it like a pro. And I was like, yeah, I don't think that's that hard. I really don't. I think that that's part of the job.
So you handle it like a pro. Michael Thorbjornsson, Jake Knapp, I mentioned rounding out the top
five, Nico Echeverria. You mentioned Jackson Subber finished, I believe T seven. Is that
right? As I put my leaderboard away, T six along with Kevin. Don't call me Kendall Roy, Matt Fitzpatrick, T eight and column,
more a cow and Tristan Lawrence and Andrew Putnam T eight.
I was going to linger on more a cow. I just a little bit feels like he,
he was kind of on, on my, my timeline a lot this week. First,
kind of the interesting stuff.
I lost 4.6 strokes on the greens in round one.
He was last of 156 people in the field. That's wild. Still obviously shot 369,
but switched to new putter in round two and gained three shots on the greens.
He was 11th for the day in shooting 64. Just kind of one of those stories. It
sounds like a tailor-made prototype that has been in the works for a while. He was waiting to put it into play Not, not, I might be switching around putting shrubs. Just, you know, anyway, we'll take that.
We'll take that later.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category.
I'm not going to be in that category. I'm not going to be in that category. I'm not going to be in that category. I'm not going to be in that category. I'm not I might be in that category right now. Not, not, I might be switching around putting shrubs. Just, you know,
anyway, we'll take that. We'll take that later.
Other big news for more cow was he split with Joe Griner after just five events.
Joe Griner, you remember caddy for max childhood friend of max Homa caddy for
him forever.
It has been a little bit of a Rover since him and Max split was
on the bag for JT when he won at Harbor town and then was on the bag for five events with
more of how their best finish was T 17 quote from more of how I hear just because two people
are great at what they do doesn't mean we're going to be great together.
I think Joe's an amazing caddy.
I think the way that we just saw things or just day to day of how we went about
it, we were just on a little bit of a different page.
Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, but for me, it just didn't feel right.
That feels, feels fairly sensible.
If it's not, you know, if it's not working out, it's not working out.
Uh, I don't know if that's where I was the weird, the just weird, uh, vibe
with kind of a weird dust up with Adam
Schupack of Golf Week, who I think he called Alan Schupack on
accident. That was just kind of funny. Took exception to Schupack,
including Schupack wrote a story about them splitting up. Sounds
like Schupack went out to go interview him during his Pro-Am.
And Morikawa said, I'm out here. I believe the quote that was
included in the original Golf Week article was, quote, ask me anything you want in my press conference later. I'm with my Pro-Am
partners now, end quote.
And Mark, how it kind of-
How to follow this along though? It's like, there's another Alan in golf media, Alan Shipnut.
So I'm like, well, wait, what's going on here? This was a hard thing for me to follow.
Yeah. And so the next part of the story was, I don't know if it was after round one or after, when
the follow-up was, but people were asking him about his caddy and he said, I didn't
appreciate Alan, Adam.
I didn't appreciate you putting that line in there that makes me look bad.
I got to stick up for myself.
I'm not going to do the whole quote, but it was a lot of like, enough is enough. I'm sticking
up for myself. And I don't know. The whole thing was just kind of a, again, I just feel
like I keep coming back to kind of cool manning a lot of these, a lot of these interactions.
I did ship or God now I'm all fucking twisted up. Did shoe pack need to need to put that
quote in there? Probably not. I think charitable reading is, Hey, I was out there and I asked him and here's what
he said. I think pessimistic reading would be, you know, he blew me off to point out
that he was hanging with pro-am partners or something. I don't really know what the super
bad way of reading that would be. The whole thing was very strange. I've said this on a past podcast, but I have really tried to think and reflect on like,
man, when is the media gone at a guy? Like you could say, all right, maybe we've been
unfair to Bryson, you know, like on our podcast or something, right. But like guys on site
at in press conferences, really pressing people, you know, maybe you could say there were some
questions about Rory's personal life. But like guys on site in press conferences, really pressing people, you know, maybe you
could say there were some questions about Rory's personal life, you know, like when
the divorce stuff was happening last year.
Okay.
Maybe the only thing I can think of is the English media going after Brian Harmon for
hunting for being a bloodthirsty hunter.
You know, when he was about to win the open
championship a couple of years ago, but this kind of stuff is
like, you are creating the problem.
Like you are truly blowing on the fire.
There's nothing here.
And so it's like, I don't understand why what more
Akawa feels like people are after him for.
I don't, I would love to ask him myself.
Like, I don't think that the media is hostile with golfers.
I actually think they treat them like, I don't want to say kid gloves, but I don't think there's
a lot of hard hitting questions, especially in like the post-round interviews, you know,
it's truly like, how's it feel, you know, to choke like that's not a harsh question.
No, just the whole, yeah, the whole thing is very weird. And I I've said this a million times.
I always feel weird waiting into this territory because we're not on site at
events. We are, we are not asking questions.
And so I know that's a very different scenario and a different position to be
coming from. So, but I'm with you in that, like, I read all the transcripts.
And from what I see, there's not a ton of just pressing or contention.
And God, it just seems like,
I don't know if Morikawa has rabbit ears going on.
I don't know if he's, I don't know what it is,
but it just doesn't seem to be,
doesn't seem to be really killing it in the PR,
winning the hearts and minds perspective, but alas.
My question is, why did we, I think his initial kind of was JJ.
JJ Jackovac.
And he seemed fantastic.
So that, that, and they seemed like a really good team.
So that was all going back to the players.
I'm like, like, or right after the players, I'm like, what, what happened there?
Yeah.
Who's counting for Michael Thorbjornsen this week.
Almost got a, almost got a dub.
Yeah.
So it's, I don't know, you know, how it feels like Colin is,
is searching a little bit.
It just is very, I don't know. It's a very,
it's, it's a weird situation where player and caddy splitting up.
If you say it's a personal, you know,
almost like employment thing and it's none of my business,
and I'll be like, okay, that's totally fine. I get it. But it also just kind of makes it's
all of these things add up to just make golf a little less interesting and it's a little less
sticky and a little more just like, again, kind of eye-rolly, like, why am I rooting for any of
these guys sort of perspective? But also I don't find the like Reiner and more color not working out is not.
That's not hot.
I don't need to, you could straight up say like, Hey, just we, we weren't
vibing totally totally fair.
I get it.
I, there's plenty of caddies I've had where I'm like, I'm not vibing with this guy.
And he, and I think he's a great guy.
I just don't think we're reading putts the same way.
You know, we don't see, we're not seeing the same lines. Like that's totally fine. I'm not going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like,
Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like,
Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like,
Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like,
Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like,
Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like,
Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, Oh, I'm going to be like, man, it's not really like the, to the football press. It's not really like,
honestly, it's like the meme a little bit with more call was sometimes of like
the guy in the mirror, like you go out there and you make it about you.
Yeah. Yeah.
Nobody was at nobody was really like pressing on this one.
It'd be great to get a comment on like, Hey, is there anything specific? You know,
but I don't think anybody was like, uh,
trying to hold your feet to the fire. Like something nefarious happened.
I think a good example of this. And again, I'm not on site.
I'm not criticizing the people who are asking questions. I'm just,
just pointing it out. James Piot was in the field. James Piot's the,
the Michigan state graduate Detroit native won the 2021 USM
notable as one of the, one of the early live players bounced around. I think he was
on Los Fireballs and then he was on the High Flyers and I think he did a stint with the Nibliqs maybe
for a while. A 14 day contract. Yeah, a lot of that. A lot of that. Then he got relegated
after the 2023 season, but was playing on the PGA Tour. It it's notable that it was like, he didn't play any live events in 2024,
which I guess counts as kind of the one year suspension.
And then this year has played a corn fairy tour event and got a sponsor
exemption this week.
There was one interview with him in the transcripts and nobody brought up live.
I'm like, that's like, nobody's out there with like the pitchforks talking about
like, what's it like to fucking come crawling back? You know, it's just like, Hey man, I saw like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, Yeah. That's not an actual, I think they might've rebranded.
Yeah.
I think GMAC was on that team.
Are they still a team?
Did they become the, they might've become the range goats.
I think that's what happened.
That's Bubba's team.
Was he the Nibliq's to start with?
He might've been.
I think he was.
I just go back 10 years and say like, Hey man, you're going to be talking about a, a pro golf team called the Niblix.
Let's see who was on original Niblix live golf team, 2022.
No, bubble was not on that team. I'm sorry. There was a,
I have no fucking idea who this guy in the left is.
Turk Pettit.
No, that's not, I don't know. I this guy on the left is. Turk Pettit.
No, that's not I don't know.
I don't know who this is.
I don't know who this is.
I think it's Turk Pettit, James Piot, Peter Uline and
Hudson, they become smash.
No, I think Smash was another team
because I thought you line and kept go around
smash burned. Weasburger was burned. Weasburger on live. Did he go to live? God, that's a
name I haven't thought about in a while. Huh? The pie itself is interesting though. Cause
I remember when he signed with live and it was like, Oh, they're going to just start
rating all the young talent. You know, it's just, it's kind of hard to pick winners at a college in golf.
Like even us and winners, there's not like.
It's rare that the guys like can't miss.
You know what I mean?
It is.
Yeah, I think GMAC was maybe the captain of the Nibliq for a while.
Someone named Travis Smith with a Y came in.
Travis Smith left for Punch GC, which has since become a ripper.
Okay.
A Pettit return and Peter Uline came in from crushers GC.
So there's been, I mean, a lot of shuffle in the deck chairs, a lot more than I probably
realized on a lot of these teams, but we can, we can maybe take that offline.
That's all news to me.
That's actually good Intel though. It kind of shows like know enough to know how bad we are at certain things.
I feel like I'm constantly taking inventory of like, I am not an expert on
the Niblix, you know, or insert X here.
Niblix in this situation, you know, like, you know,
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to on the Niblix, you know, or insert X here. Niblix in this situation.
But I would love to learn.
I'm very curious though about like the Niblix and did they change names?
Because I can't remember.
And I'm going to be honest about that.
I mean, talking, God, this is going to sound like I'm joking, but I'm kind of
not like talking about media, not pressing people and nobody really caring
about any of this stuff.
Imagine if any media was interested in this stuff. And I'm like, I'm not going to like talking about media, not pressing people and nobody really caring about any of this stuff.
Imagine if any media was interested in all of the changing around and the trades and like, wait, why did you trade the best player for one of the worst players?
That that doesn't make sense. Are you guys trying to win or not? With why is it like, why is considerations for next year?
Something like, are you trying to get under a sour cap that doesn't exist?
What's going on here?
Yeah.
Just why is your GM tweeting about that all the time?
You know, like, imagine if anybody was digging into any of that stuff.
But only other kind of news and notes I had from the Rocket Don't Call Me Mortgage Classic.
PJ Tour added a feature.
I just saw a ton of headlines about this and I was like, what, what is this?
A feature that shows how long it took groups to play each hole.
And there was a lot of headlines like this is going to start to combat slow play.
They're Aaron this stuff out.
And all it was, was just like the average time that it took each group to play.
So it was like all the groups go through and they're like, Oh, the first hole,
it took them an average of 11 minutes and 33 seconds.
I'm like, okay. Yeah, man. Obviously. Okay. I get it.
So just the big takeaway that I had was that it took longer to play the long
holes and shorter to play the part.
Yeah. So I, I, I don't know. I kind of was, I, I see in some headlines,
I was like, Oh, they're going to just publish. Like,
here's how long this guy takes over the ball.
Here's long this guy takes over the ball, but that was not it.
So if I misunderstood, then I'm sure somebody will,
will correct me, but that-
Can we confirm to each no,
no winner of the three one three challenges here?
I think that's right.
But I think they've started giving donations
for all the threes, the ones in the threes.
Okay, good.
I think, cause yeah, that was the whole thing
a couple of years ago was like, it was kind of like, it's like getting struck by lightning twice to make like a three one three on
that section. But the prize was not really, uh,
it would be even a four or five hole in one hole in one and then followed up with
a birdie. Yeah. In that. Yeah. And it's shockingly,
I don't believe anyone's done that all in one round,
but now I think they've changed it so that it's all in the week.
So you don't have to do it all in one round, but now I think they've changed it so that it's all in the week.
So you don't have to do it all in one round.
But I guess what I wish I could go back in time and be in that marketing
meeting.
It just feels like,
and maybe this is kind of part of the drop in mortgage. Like it just seems like
there's a lot of brand marketing answers kind of in need of a question.
But you know, again, talk about what can we guys, what can we do with the area code? Well, I know I got an idea. I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that. I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that. I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that.
I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that.
I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that.
I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that.
I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that.
I'm not sure if you guys are going to be able to do that.
I'm not sure if you guys are going to be ahead and do a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a littleevering. So I figured I'd put together a little stats corner here for you from,
from the rocket. I almost said it from the rocket classic.
Don't call me mortgage.
These are a couple of stats that I thought I thought you'd get a little tickled by.
Okay. So I'm going to impress your friends at the,
at the water cooler at the go on is golf club this week. First one.
There are 129 players under par in round one.
That is the most players under par in a single round this entire season
beats round two of the American Express by 11.
A lot of red numbers out there at Detroit Golf Club.
Yeah, just a lot of a lot of breeze.
I also I did a lot of players to go look this up afterwards,
but every player that made the cut finished under par, which is
wild.
You don't see that a lot. Usually there's some spectacular blowups on the weekend from
some people who barely snuck in. Moving on. Philip Knowles was, I believe, their 36 hole leader,
made three Eagles in round two. All of them were hole outs. Did you see this?
No, I didn't. And I don't see enough hole Number seven, par five, he hold out from 40 yards.
And number 17, he chipped in from the front of the green from 80 yards.
That's wild.
All in one round.
Mayor of no nipple niche there.
It just chipped them off.
Just chipped them off.
Yeah.
And number four, the par five, he hold out from 37 yards.
Number seven, par five, he hold out from 40 yards.
And number 17, he chipped in from the front of the green from 80 yards. That's wild. All in one round. Mayor of no nipple niche there.
But just chipped them off.
Just chipped them off. They're gone.
I will one up that with Davis Thompson on Saturday made three Eagles on the front nine,
which is heady. Number one, number seven and number eight.
Number one, hold a wedge from 80 yards.
Number seven, he made a 40 footer for Eagle, the par five and number eight was
short par four playing 352 yards drove it to seven feet, which again, Davis
Thompson did not know that you had, you had 350 in the bag.
Uh, but that kind of seems to be just a pretty, uh, a lot of loud
traits, a lot of loud trades out there.
Driving at 350 suddenly is like, I was listening, man. Can we talk about that? Like that's human in Detroit right now. Sure. And I was jumping out of the park. Sure was scooting a little bit, but man, it's still going 376.
That's a long, that's a lot of circles on the scorecard. That is Jake Nassar.
That's a lot of circles on the scorecard. That's a lot of circles on the scorecard.
That's a lot of circles on the scorecard. that's a lot of circles on the scorecard.
That is, uh, Jake nap, your guy shot 61.
Uh, that's his second course record of the year.
He's such a menace.
Second, like setting two course records on the PGA tour in a year.
I thought it was pretty impressive.
You also of course shot 59 at a, at PJ national.
Uh, and then the last one I had, this was just a good one to check in on every
now and again, cause I feel like a lot of times you see the 54 hole leader,
either punt one away or, you know, lose or you're like, Oh God, what a fucking
choker 54 hole leaders only 16 for 28 this year pocket or got it done barely,
obviously, but it's just not an auto thing. You know, it feels like, and again, this is kind of the like live 54 holes,
OWGR conversation comes in, man.
It's like winning a 72-hole tournament and winning a 54-hole
tournament are very different things.
And it's very hard to just go apples to apples.
So we don't need to kick that hornet's nest again,
but I think it's always worth considering.
Can I ask you a couple of questions?
I think the first one is,
what's the most important thing to do to apples. So, uh, we don't need to kick that hornet's nest again, but I think it's
always worth, it's worth considering.
Can I ask you a couple of questions about stack keeping at the baseball game?
Sure.
So do you feel pressure?
Like, are you ever panicking?
What's the, how does this work?
Where you just, are they, you just hand them whenever you feel the
bolt of lightning chase. What if you chase a rabbit hole and it doesn't give you a good stat is, is
levering or like, Hey man, I need like, where's that post-it note, dude?
No, no, no, no, no.
They, I would say they, they don't use a shout out to both of those guys.
Cause they're like the nicest, most fun guys to, to possibly work with.
And I think they know that I'm, I'm there more just hanging out than I am trying to
win like a Peabody award or something.
You're just kind of trying to read the needs.
So at least how I do it and Dom is like, you know, I'm like a 30 handicap in doing
what Dom does.
Like Dom is, is like a plus six and he's got everything is just dialed, but I'll,
I'll try to dig in like, uh, you know, who's got a, whatever. Who's
got a hitting streak. Christian yellow has a 12 game hitting streak. What's the longest
hitting streak of the year? He's got Joey Ortiz, you know, hit a Homer last night. When's
the last time he's homered in back to back games. And so you kind of try to like at the
beginning, like you just go through and dig up like stats that might come up. You know,
I remember O'Neill Cruz was like sitting on 99 strikeouts tied with Riley Green.
Riley Green wasn't playing that night. So I was like, well,
if he strikes out in the first inning leading off,
like he'll be the first one in the majors to a hundred strikeouts this year.
So like write that on a card. And then when it happens,
you're good to go pass it to Jeff. And we got a little nugget.
And do you, when do you hand it to him?
Do you hand it to him on commercial break or are you just sitting right,
right next to him, just slide it, slide it right there.
And he can take it or not take it do you, when do you hand it to him? Do you hand it to him on commercial break or are you just like- No, no, no.
I'm sitting right next to him.
Just slide it, slide it right there and he can take it or not take it.
No.
What would you say, you're talking about 54 whole liters, 16 to 28.
What would you be?
You pass 30 cards.
How many cards you pass and like, what's your percentage of usage?
Sure.
Well, sometimes they get used in different ways.
You know, sometimes a lot, you know, then you're going to have to do a lot of things. And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things.
And then you're going to have to do a lot of things. And then, it's, you're taking a lot of swings, trying to make sure they have, they have what they need. But again, it's more just like, it's,
it's just trying to, trying to look ahead, you know, Oh, new,
who's in the bullpen and who's on deck. All right. They're probably going to,
it's, you know, we've got lefty righty coming up,
which means they're probably going to go to the lefty in the bullpen.
When was the last time this guy faced that guy? What's his career record?
So you're just kind of trying to think like a batter head.
Any cards you wanted to pull back? Like I, I got one wrong on Nick Mears, uh, career with the pirates. I don't think I, I think I had pulled the wrong stat.
And so I think Jeff knew that and didn't say it.
So I apologize if he's listening.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Anything you're proud of any, any card you're like, that was money.
Oh, man.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember.
I'm trying to remember. I'm trying to remember. I'm trying to remember. I'm trying to remember. I'm trying to remember. So I apologize if he's listening. Yeah. Yeah. Anything you're proud of any,
any card you're like, that was money. Oh man. I'm trying to remember. Uh,
it's good when you can, when you can get them real quick, you know? So it was like, um,
Joey Ortiz, I think was up in like the, the, what was it?
I think bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and just knowing like, all right, he's going to ask for like Joey Ortiz bases. Like what's his,
what's his OPS with the bases loaded.
You just like need. Yeah. Just reading the need on that.
So it's just kind of the nothing stand out, but just,
just be in there with that stuff.
And that's a, that's a thrill and delight when you can read the need.
Yeah, exactly.
You know, you're like, I kind of know what you're going to be looking for and
I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to outflank you on it.
That's exactly. That was, it was good. So that's a, exactly. You know, you're like, I kind of know what you're going to be looking for. And I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to outflank you on it. That's exactly.
That was, it was good. So that's a, yeah.
Thus concludes our brewery. I'm fascinated by that though. More so than, you know,
the rocket. Don't call me mortgage. Sure. You know what I'm fascinated by?
Our friends at Omni hotel, the official hotel of no laying up summers here, Neil.
It's the perfect excuse to book that long overdue golf trip. Whether you're planning for a family escape or rounding
up your crew for a big weekend, Omni has 13 golf destinations
from coast to coast that are ready to host you from the recently
renovated Oak Marsh course at Omni Amelia Island in Florida,
which, by the way, I think Tron and Sally played this week and we're raving about raving straight up raving and TC
doesn't rave about really anything and oh well he does but like it felt like
authentic raving they were fired up about it yeah I think it was it was
Dustin off of course it needed some Dustin off and I think it they did a
great job so whether you're looking at that one or you're looking for mountain
views and timeless layout of the Omni homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia,
sounds like you might see big Randy's parents out there. According to the last ad read we
did no shortage of summer golf destinations to explore. And while you're out there, why
not get competitive? Neil, the Omni generation cup is back for season two with the first
qualifier of the season on July 12th at the Omni Bedford Springs.
Grab your family.
T it up for a day of fun and competition to solidify your
spot in the 2026 National Championship.
Your summer trip is calling head to Omni hotels.com golf
and play the possibilities.
Can I say I looked it up?
I was eyeing that Bedford Springs one.
Yeah, he's seeing.
I are in the same generation. We can't play together.
I think that's a good rule.
It is. No, I, it was fair, but I was checking it because I was like, man,
that'd be kind of fun, you know, but like my dad just has knee replaced.
I can't play with him. You know, it's just,
but I think the generation cup is legitimately sick. Like I, I'm,
I'm fired up about it. And I, it's a little like the,
I was peeking at the schedule, so I would encourage people to go check it out.
It's a little like the drive chip and putt.
You might just need to start planning for it now.
Yeah.
Obviously I also want to go see the Mount Washington Omni up in New Hampshire.
I've heard very good things about that, uh, that property.
Put it on the, put it on the goals list.
Yeah.
A couple other results from around the world of golf.
So me Lee and Jin Hee Im win the Dow, the team event also in
Michigan, also in a playoff over Lexi Thompson and Megan Kang.
Sounds like Megan Kang missed a five footer that would have
let's see retired off there.
I'm not doing it.
I don't know.
I just what's going on here.
Okay. I don't know.
And then I saw Bethann's tweeting about how retired Lexi
Tosta should be on this.
It might be on the Solheim Cup team.
I'm just like, we'll just like think about that sentence.
That's wild.
And we're going to go back to the media.
Like, is anybody pressing that issue?
It doesn't sound like it.
I don't know where the contention is, gang.
I don't know, because that's a question I'd like asked in
a press conference.
Sure.
Which again, hey, man, if you want to play, play.
Go for it.
She's interactive. Do whatever she wants. Why are we doing? Why are we saying that? That should be
addressed. Yeah, I don't know. This was, this is both Lee and Im's first win in America. Although
I like this. Each of them has won five plus times on the Korea LPGA. So it was just a matter of time
probably before that transferred over. As far as the senior surrogate, Padraig Harrington wins his second US senior
open in four years out at the Broadmoor in Colorado, one by one over your guy,
Stuart Sturrock.
Neil, unfinished business, potentially some unfinished business at the US
senior open.
Did you see the whole dust up with Padraig and Malpy?
I did.
I couldn't really pick up what they were. It was,
was he upset that Malpy was like not helping him find his ball or was he upset
that he was like not, uh, so that was it. The first one.
That was it. Yeah. He was, he was upset.
There was a misleading tweet going on like going around at first about how,
like, I think he was upset about where he was standing,
but I think it was much more like everybody's looking for
Padraig's ball.
Maltby is, you know, he's got a producer in his ear
and he's doing a million other things.
He doesn't know when they're coming back to him.
So he's not really looking for the ball.
Padraig didn't like that.
It had a little bit of a dust up,
a little bit of a followup out at scoring.
I think, I think both gave some quotes.
This was kind of some old school,
old school stuff reporters hanging around. The best part about the video was there was like people waiting for an autograph
and the caddies like trying like, dude, like not, let's not do this right now guys. And they,
they both kept like, and one more thing and one, you know, and it was, but, but Podrick was like,
kind of like looking at the ground, he's trying to like say it quietly and, uh, that sparring session. And, uh, I think that's, I think that's right.
I think both, you know, both had some fair points.
I think Padraig's point was Raj, like you were a player for 30 years.
You know, that if you're in the area, everybody kind of all hands on deck,
come look, come help me look, you know, and, and Malpy's kind of saying like,
Hey man, I got a job to do.
My boss is in my ear.
You know, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, everybody kind of all hands on deck, come look, come help me look, you know?
And, and Malpy's kind of saying like, Hey man, I got a job to do.
My boss is in my ear.
You know, I'm not, I'm not, uh, I'm not a player right now.
I'm not a caddy.
I'm not a fan.
I'm doing my job.
So I think he's hungry.
He's trying to get back in the rotation.
Exactly.
And I think, I think it would, sounds like it was just a true, a real stalemate.
It sounds like Padraig and maybe, maybe apologize after the fact and, you know,
kind of a nothing to see here.
So just an old school, you know, beginning, middle, and an end, you know, I like,
you like to see that you like to know what it's about.
You like to see the characters.
You like to know how it ended and move on.
So shout out to both of those guys.
That was, that was great.
Uh, and also shout out to our guy, Michael Grellers, brother, Tom, who
qualified for the senior open.
He, uh, called TC was all fired up about that.
And I miss these caddies brother qualified for the U S senior open.
Yeah.
He, uh, he missed the cut, but he shot, uh, shot 72 in the second round.
Sounds like he, I don't, yeah, I don't know if it was trying to qualify on a
lark and just, oh my God, I got through sort of situation, but yeah, good stuff, man.
72 in the second round.
That's nothing to sneeze at out at live Dallas.
Patrick Reed P wins his first live golf event at that shop.
This is his first win.
Yeah.
First in like 42 starts or something like that.
I think they said I wins a lot of pledge playoff fever today.
Wins in a four man playoff over Ginichiro Kazuma from the Ironheads.
Louie Oosthazen from Stinger and Paul Casey from the Crushers.
Paul Casey still has a one on live, which is kind of just a little bit.
I feel like vindicating in a lot of my Paul Casey as a player takes.
Uh, first time he's ever won in Texas as a professional, deep in the heart of
Texas as a gunslinger like him, I feel like that's kind of a, that was a hole
in the resume, so I would, I could have swore he picked off a colonial or
match play or something, right?
It must've been so hot and sweaty and greasy out there
just doing his thing.
Sounds like it was a very difficult day out at Merida.
P shot 75 to hang on, getting the playoff.
Tough scores out there.
It looks like tough caddities.
A couple other little nuggets from out there.
John Roms, his streak of 20 consecutive top tens
has come to an end, unfortunately, Neal.
T11 out there. So
yeah, put that one to bed. What a run and Sergio gets into the open. So the, the, I think the open
created the open created an exemption for live, which I feel like makes a lot of sense is the, uh,
of the top five players, whoever the top, you know, you basically have to be in the top five of the live
like individual standings, but not otherwise exempt. And I think the people ahead of him were
Waco, Neiman, Bryson and John Rahm or something, I believe, all of which were already exempt into
the open. And so Sergio, the exemption goes to him. Sounds like it was a bit of a nail biter
getting that done, but his 26th time playing the open. It was very confident. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo. I did do a lingo.
I did do a lingo.
I did do, you committed to it. It was very confident. I did do a lingo with Randy for a year, you know, on French.
And then I was like, I don't know if this is quite, quite my speed.
Uh, he holds off the 22 year old phenom, the fellow Frenchman Martin Coovera, fiery Franco
file who finishes second.
Both of those guys are also getting into the open for the first time.
Uh, Eugenio Chikara finishes T seven, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine,
nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, nine, and Martin Cuvra, fiery Franco file who finishes second. Both of those guys are also getting into the open for the first time.
Uh, Eugenio Chikara finishes T seven continuing his,
he's playing really solid golf after leaving live again.
That's just kind of a down the leaderboard, you know,
shouted out sort of situation, but yeah,
T seven stacking up some finishes in the hopes of,
of getting his PJ tour card and on the corn fairy tour, the Memorial health championship in Springfield, Missouri, Austin smotherman, first person on the corn fairy tour with multiple
wins, which brings the vaunted battlefield promotion into play. The most impressive,
I was going to say it's three wins, right? For the battlefield promotion.
We're officially all systems go now. You know, we're on, we're on battlefield watch. The
most impressive, most impressive thing you could do a golf, I think,'s a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, Sandy's brother finished 17th in the PGA tour
university rankings, earning third team honors and exempt
membership on the PGA tour Americas, the remainder of the
2025 season. So not nothing, not nothing, but good for Sandy.
That's good stuff. Yeah. Another red Raider. That's right. Well,
Neil, that kind of concludes the world of pro golf.
I wanted to dig in on a little bit of personal golf stuff,
a little observational stuff.
We had a really, really, really fun trip last week.
We were kind of informally calling it the influencer tour.
You know, we had a lot of prestigious influencing to do,
starting at the Titles to Ad shoot, which I just want to set up.
If anybody has not seen one of these things or how these work, a lot of these equipment
companies will just kind of buy out a golf course for the day to host these ad shoots.
And they do a lot of like, hey, we're doing driver slow-mo shots on hole seven, and we're doing head
shots for magazine stuff on hole 12. And usually they carve out one hole for like, Hey, we're doing
social media and YouTube and stuff.
Why don't we put the no line up guys over there?
And so we got to kind of hang out and just watch as a lot of these
tour players, titleist guys were, we're coming through.
And so I don't know about you.
I had a really good time and I had a lot of observations just
from kind of seeing those guys in the wild.
I'm curious where you want to start.
What, what kind of stuck those guys in the wild.
I'm curious where you wanted to start. What, what kind of stuck out to you?
The most I'll give you that. Give you the number one draft pick.
Well, you can see some of these videos already. We did a couple last year.
It was at the same course last year.
I went solo to Wampanoag country club up in Connecticut.
So it's right before the travelers.
So a lot of these videos will come out over the next six to honestly 12 months.
So but like we did a ball fitting with Victor Hovland, did some short game stuff last year
with JT.
And it was nice that we kind of planned this trip out.
And there's going to be a video coming out later this year of our, you know, kind of
road trip through the, I don't know, the New England coast, I guess you could say.
But we were laughing about it, Deidre.
It's like what I, I, and I've, I've actually improved, but you spend a day with these guys,
basically golf savants and it, we were, we were calling it like golf superfoods.
And it's like, man, I got it.
These are just such good nutrients, but they're running right here.
You're talking about tips that they're passing out.
Yes.
Like talking to, so we spent time with Russell Henley played a hole with him.
I spent 30 minutes with Michael Kim, Tom, Joe Highsmith, Tom Hoagy.
It was awesome.
And, and they all like the, a few key things that stick out just kind of macro
is you're kind of asking them questions, expecting to get some aha thing from them.
And it's usually not, it's it's not, what sticks out to me is that we,
as amateurs, complicate the game and we search for like
a magic bullet.
And I think Henley is where it really sticks out where he's
like, no, I'm just trying to like take the easy money at
every opportunity.
Like, why would I try to hit it over?
Like we're playing this par four.
He's like, well, I got these two bunkers.
Like, I'm just going to try to cut one off the first bunker. Like, why would I try to fly that bunker?
That's stupid. You know, the way he thinks about things is like, I'm trying to put it in different
quadrants. So almost like his visual cues and how he talks to his caddy. And the way that he talked
about golf made it seem easy. And that's the thing that I take away with a lot of these guys. Michael
Kim, same thing. Like, oh yeah, like I just, like, I started to overcomplicate the game after college.
I thought I had to hit a fade.
He's one of the few guys that hits a draw and he went back to hitting a draw and he's
like, I just hit a draw on repeat.
I just, Max will tell you that too.
Max hits a fade, Max Homa.
And he's like, I shouldn't try to hit the hard shot.
Like basically avoid that at all costs is one of those big themes.
And but to hear them say it in their own words and they all have a different way of saying
it.
It's like these, I don't know, like ASAP's fables where you're like, man, God, what a
good life less.
I should just, I need to write that down, you know, but we just get like waterboard
with them all day and we're filming and we're on and we're trying to like create content,
blah, blah, blah. And so then we're in the car driving and I'm like,
Dej, we got to write this down, man. I'm going to forget this stuff. This is good stuff.
Well, that's where the superfoods thing comes in. You're on camera and you're trying to sound like
an idiot. You're like trying to try to listen to what they're saying, but like, how can I bounce
it back to them to get them talking more? And then, yeah, you just forget what they forget what they said.
As soon as you get your next question out, because you're trying to think of the next
question and you get your halfway through between Connecticut and Massachusetts.
You're like, God, how do I hit that driver again?
God, he gave me all the secrets and I didn't write it down.
Man, I had a stinger and I'm like, God, that's all I've been trying to do that for like 10
years. And I'm like, I hit like two of them and it was like money.
And I'm like, okay.
But now I'm like, fuck, how does that work?
I know you got to email the titles people.
Hey, could you send me that footage?
Like, I didn't rewatch that.
I don't remember really what he told me.
The thing that stuck out to me on Ben on just goes from one wood in the bag.
Driver to one iron was
a pretty that's a heady thing to look down at.
You just don't see a lot of that one head cover type of type
of situation.
I feel like this is maybe an unrelatable take here, but I'm
going to fire away.
It makes a day like the rocket mortgage a lot more
enjoyable like, cause I did, I played with Max Grazerman in a pro-am last year. And so
now I root for him. And like when he, I'm like, Oh, he's in the mix. This is going to
be great. I'm turning this on right when it starts. I'm going to be on the pod tonight.
I can't wait to watch. And same thing. Like, I don't know much about Ben on, but we spent
30 minutes with them and knowing that he has like one wood in the bag now. And like every
time if he's in contention, I'm gonna be like, oh man,
I wonder if he's gonna hit that one iron.
You know, and like, because he was talking us through,
he's like, yeah, three wood,
it just was a little squirrely for me.
And I just, I hit the shit out of my irons
and I'm just gonna put all,
it looked like such a high level player's bag.
It was just like all hardware, you know,
and like the driver, like one head cover in that bag. It was, it was like, you know, like ballers only, you know, double black diamond stuff.
Yeah. And where I'll give titles a lot of credit too, is when you have that type of
setup, I think it's very easy for a lot of other brands and, and I mean, outside of golf
as well, obviously to just be like over over here's the tick tock dance station.
Come on in, Tom Hogy.
We're going to make some viral content.
And I think instead titles is just like, no, we're not going to get Tom
Hogy to do a tick tock dance, but he's like one of the best iron players
in the whole world.
Like, maybe you just ask him about that.
You know, do you start talking about all the different ways he plays
irons and why he's played the same irons as he was 13 years old and how he
hits, how he hits a flat, a flat wedge versus a high wedge and
like how he controls the dispersion on these two things and how he
plays this course versus this course.
And it's like, Tom Hogan is a genius at playing golf.
What if he just asked him about that?
You know, and that's where I feel like a lot of the PJ tour stuff
and you know, it can kind of lose its way, but like if you get any of these guys just talking about golf,
it's the best.
It's fascinating, which I think brings us to our guy,
Joe Highsmith, who I think was my.
Before we get there, cause that is the main event.
I want to say, I think it throws these guys off a little bit
just with us two.
You know, you go to the, it's basically stations, right.
Set up around the course and like, there's a lot of like, they got like, you
know, Venice cams on rails, you know, in the FPV drones, they're doing all kinds
of like funky stuff at other places, like other holes and then it's a
deal.
He's going to ask you, I, here's a stinger.
Bet on has no idea who we are.
No clue.
Right.
And it's like, there's like a couple of handhelds and, and a couple like unathletic middle-aged
guys, a couple of new dads hanging out with the, Hey Ben, how you doing?
Your sister.
Hey man.
How do you light up your buds?
Can you go through that?
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, we just want to kind of want to watch you hit a few.
I might, you know, I might ask you to notice some stuff.
I'll, I'll, don't worry. I'll't know. I don't know. I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know. I don't know. I don having a really good time. Well, that's the thing. And almost they, they come in, they're like a little suspect, like,
whoa, whoa, like this is not professional. And then like Russ Henley was immediately like,
oh, so you just want to play a hole. And he was by the end, like he had to get to another station
to do some, you know, probably Venice cam thing. And he was like, no, we're having fun. Like,
and I was like, that, that's so rewarding for me to hear. I'm like, yeah, we're just bullshitting. It was, it was great.
Russ, Emily, by the way, talk about a guy that I'm just, my ears are going to perk up guy that I'm,
I've just quietly become a really, really big fan of. I feel like a complete definition,
super processor. And these high, a highlight of the day for me was, and he was pulling away.
I asked him, this was off camera. I was like, Hey, Russell,
how often do you get recognized in the airport? And he, he stopped me,
thought about it and he was like, not, not very often. I was like, dude,
like you got to cherish that. I was like, you, we, we kinda,
it's almost like the Russell Henley test. Like I think that guy's made 38,
maybe 40 million bucks in his career.
41 million dollars.
And he can still.
See that was me reading the need.
I knew you were gonna ask for that.
So I looked it up right away.
And he said, like, he kind of like thought about it.
Cause I was like, that's awesome.
He's like, I've been a pro for 13 years
and really successful and you made a lot of money
and you can kind of go about your life and nobody
bothers you. And he goes, you know what?
You're absolutely right. And he's like, I was at the president's club last year.
And I got mistaken for Jordan's beef. Who else did he say? Jordan,
Zala Torres and one other person, a Canadian, I think.
I heard might've been cam Davis or something.
Yeah. And he was like, and I'm not any of those guys. And it was like,
and I kind of loud. I was like, this is kind of great. Like nobody knows who I am.
Like I just got it.
All I gotta do is play good golf.
And so he's just got a great attitude.
Like don't overcomplicate it.
Easy guy to root for when you hang out with him.
And what I would, you know, kind of the second beat of that conversation was
like the guys that do come up to you or guys or gals that do come up to you in
the airport or whatever, probably are like very educated golf fans.
You know, hey, man, I saw you guys that do come up to you or guys or gals that do come up to you in the airport or whatever, probably are like very educated golf fans. You know, Hey man,
I saw you at this good finish at the Sony last week. That was, that was awesome. And
you're knocking on the door. Hey, congratulations on Bay Hill, man. That's awesome. What a big
step in your career. You know,
he's carrying his track man to carry on the plane. You know, like, I, yeah, like they,
they know they're, they're knowers basically they're hit balls on the field. I'm like, I'm a player. I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, I'm a player.
I'm like, damn man. I was like, really? You'll just kind of, whatever, whatever. Yeah. Whatever the, you know, the body changes,
you know, I don't know how I'm, if I'm stiff or whatever. I was like,
wow, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never,
never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never,
never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never,
never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never,
never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, wow, never ever heard that. So loved, loved that. And we kind of got, you know, we're, we're playing a hole.
And so we hit an iron shot or wedge or whatever, and we get onto the green
and we're kind of like finish a little early.
Like we got some time left and I'm just like, Hey man, what's your, like,
what's your putting routine?
Just like verbalize it all.
Just like talk to me about everything.
You're everything that's going through your head.
Just, just talk to me about it.
And then I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,'m just like, Hey man, what's your like, what's your putting routine? Just like verbalize it all.
Just like talk to me about everything. You're everything that's going through your
head. Just, just say it out loud.
And he's like talking about how he lines it up and he doesn't have a line on the
ball. He just, he, he has a check mark, which I really liked that. Cause he's
like, yeah, I just heard tiger say one time on a tee box talking to like his
playing partner, like, Oh, I'm playing a Nike with a check mark on it.
He's like, so ever since then, I was just like, Oh, hell yeah.
I'm putting a check mark on my ball too, which I thought was really cool.
So he doesn't use a line.
He just uses the title script and he puts it like perpendicular to the line.
Basically just make sure it's like, it's a straight line kind of perpendicular
to where he's about to put it.
He's like, and then, you know, I, I grip it and I'm like, Whoa, hold on.
What's up with that grip?
Cause it's like, uh, I don't even know.
He's a lefty.
So it'd be right.
Right hand low for a righty golfers.
It would be left hand low with like a reverse claw.
So instead of the claw kind of doing like the open hand pushing towards the hole,
the claw is actually like backwards.
Pulling the lead hand from the bottom though, from the bottom.
Yeah. And it's like, we were like, Whoa. And he's like, well, check it out.
I had the yips.
He got the yips when he was 12. And he's like, yeah, I know that happens.
Usually like 70 year old people happened to me when I was 12, just debilitating
yips. So I went to the claw that only lasted for a couple of years.
I got the yips again. And so I've, I've been doing this and I don't know,
it seems to be working out or like, okay.
I don't know. I'm a PGA tour winner is again.
And then the other thing is like, sometimes I'll put with my eyes closed or like,
I go, hold on. Okay, hold on. Just maybe back up on that.
And this was very, I, we, I needed, sorry,
this was like at the end of our little session, you know,
so it was like the last question DJ asked him like, Hey, just, you know, one, one more thing. And it was like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, he's like, like you put with your eyes closed. Like, what do you, what do you mean? Like practice pots or something? He's like, no, just like,
you know, I'll line it up. We're like, well, you don't have a line. He's like,
yeah, just kind of like feel it. Then I'll take my position. And then, you know,
if I get nervous, you know, and I don't want to yip it or something, or I'll
just close my eyes. Like you just do this in practice. He's like, no, no,
I do it like in competition. He's like that putt.
So you go literally said the specific one, the mo the, when I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, you know, maybe like an extreme close up angle or something, but 17 at the cognizant cash is like a 20 foot birdie putt
to basically ice the tournament to make sure I think he only needed to make like bogey on 18 after that and
he's like, yeah, it's like a 20 footer eyes are closed just right in the center and
Just it stopped us in our tracks. I mean just kind of blew us away. We talked about it for hours afterwards
We're in Wendy's later. We're like, I can't believe that because he also was like, yeah,
it's no different than like Spieth looks at the whole like eyes up. I'm like, no, it's, I,
let me stop. A lot different, a lot different than that. Okay.
You're just taking away a whole sense. Like, yeah, yeah. It just doesn't feel like it would add
value, but it's clearly working.
He's like, yeah, no, I made some pressure putts as a junior golfer like that.
And I just so confident in his stroke that he doesn't want to
mess it up with his eyes.
It's unbelievable.
And a guy finished T eight at the PGA this year, like had to be a little nervous
there, a couple of their top 20 at the players, like he's playing really good
golf and he plays well on hard courses.
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. I'm rooting for that guy. That guy, that guy's got something that I'm rooting for right there. So that's kind of the, I don't know, that's kind of the crux of those,
of those days. I just, I love it.
We got to start, we got to start writing these tips down Dej.
We do. We do. They're going through us quickly. Uh, well, speaking of that,
I mean, we've got a lot of people that are like, Oh, I'm going to be a
professional golf player. I'm going to be a professional golf player.
I'm going to be a professional golf player. I'm going to be a professional
golf player. I'm going to be a professional tips down. Dej. We do. We do. They're going through as quickly.
Well, speaking of that, I mean, we both played some golf in the,
in the past week or so I just, you know, I always liked the,
uh, our friends at the circling back podcast always like to do the,
uh, this weekend in fun, you know, they'll just kind of talk about their weekend.
And it's, it's always one of my favorite segments on the podcast.
So I just wanted to ask you, what, what'd you do this week in golf?
What'd you get into? Well, I had an all-timer yesterday. The kid's dead, but
like he might've come back just for a day. New York Roost, it's called the Royal and Ancient Company of Dishonorable Golfers.
These are kind of local clubs affiliated with NLU around the country, around the world.
And each one of them has a major.
And so the Roost, so RACDG, the starter at Marine Park, the major was yesterday at Marine
Park, which is a public course out by JFK in New York.
The starter was calling it rack dog. It's like rack dog 1110. You're on the team rack
dog. And so that's got to stick. I mean, we can make some big letter hats with rack dog.
So the rack dog major was yesterday as a quota game. Dude, it was fantastic. It really kind
of filled up the tank for me. I brought my brother-in-law Jerry and I really like bringing friends of mine
that are into golf, but like, you know, they know what I do, but they're not
like diehard listeners or it's different to see it at first.
See the people that know each other and connect the dots on how they met each
other and why they all you guys hang out outside of this too now.
And like, you just start to get the 360 view when you go to one of these events
in person.
Yeah.
And I almost use them as a bit of a, like, I'm not sure what they're
calling them, but like, you know, like, you know, like, you know, like, you just start to get the, the three 60 view when you go to one of these events in person. Yeah.
And I almost use them as a bit of a like outside perspective, like a stress test.
Like, yo, like, tell me what you think about this.
Like, and, and what I love is that I'm also a participant.
The rooster not run by us.
And I love it because it feels organic.
And I want to shout out Carlos and Clarky and all the guys that are kind of like running
the NYC roost, Chris, who kind of started it. It's like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm organic. And I want to shout out Carlos and Clarkie and all the guys that are
kind of like running the, uh, NYC roost, Chris, who kind of started it.
It's like, it's truly organic stuff. And so I, I, we can show up,
we can support it and we, I just want to go play. I want to compete.
And so it's a quota game. There's 60, uh, 60 participants.
Everybody showed up. So nobody, nobody bailed.
And Marine parks, just like a fun public was we played in 3 45. like, Oh, I're doing some good.
Every roost has a charity that they're affiliated with.
And then, um, so I played good golf and my brother in law, he started out
three under through four, he hasn't played golf in like six months, but he's
like a, he played lacrosse in college at Georgetown.
Like he's wants to compete.
And I could see, I was asking him, I was like, what do you, you know,
what do you think is like, this is awesome.
There's no signage. This isn't like, there's no fluff at these
roost events. It's like, no, we have a block of like 20 tee
times. There's like a little tee gift, but like there's really
organized scoring or hitting cups or playing fast. Like this
is a, like really like dialed golf outing instead of like
driving out there and playing like,
uh, you know, getting a foursome together and playing. He was saying, he's like, man, normally
I come out here and you'd have one of the four is not into it. And you're trying to
play a two on two match and it just turns into a, like a waste of time. And he's like,
I don't feel like this is a waste of time. And he's, you know, he lives in Manhattan.
He's like, I wants to join a club, but it's like, I don't not gonna get enough value out
of it. I could almost see the wheels turning in his head. I like, maybe I
should get more involved in this kind of thing. Yeah. You know, and I was
telling him like, yo, there's a season long match play. There's an order of
merit where you can just like, call your shot. Like, yo, this counts, you
know, like, we week, and it's great. And everybody's hanging out afterwards.
And so I just kind of, yeah,
fill up the tank. So from there, uh, and we can get into this later. Then they said it wasn't
possible to go out to Marine park to go out, you know, basically the East Brooklyn, and then to
make it to MSG for a goose concert. First time goose was played at Madison square garden.
What do you say to those guys? I say we got back to Brooklyn. I was able to make a quesadilla
for my son. Okay. Check in with my wife, give her a kiss, get my elephant shirt on. Actually, no,
I wore my Ibot shirt. I wore my, my, uh, you know, international brotherhood dishwasher shirt, union,
union shirt, local nine Oh eight. God had such a good time at the concert. But no, man, I was fired up and I actually have a,
a qualifier tomorrow for the MetAM at Lawrence Yacht Club,
which is actually out same direction at 8 a.m. or 8 10 T time tomorrow.
Man. All right.
I feel like I'm playing good golf.
Yeah. Well, that's what I was going to say.
It's so good yesterday.
I have a lot of follow-up questions.
What was working so well? It feels like I really good golf right now.
Well, Marine park, like not, if you keep the ball off the left side, not a lot of
trouble Detroit golf club situation.
Yeah.
Like, you know, it's, it's a, uh, pretty open layout, but you know, I've that,
that was, you know, still to shoot even was, was really good.
I had, um, no doubles, no lost balls, a couple of three putts.
So I didn't, I didn't pitch a perfect game, but I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I've that was, you know, still to shoot even was, was really good. I had no doubles, no lost balls, a couple of three puts. So I didn't, I didn't pitch a perfect game, but I, I eagled the 10th hole par five and I birdied the 18th to shoot even, but
I didn't, I really drove it well. And, and listening to your golf spotlight, I think
that it would change your game if you spent,
I feel like you have limited time to practice.
I know you can find,
like I think Randy nailed it on that spotlight.
You need to get the Moab back in play.
I was hitting a, just a kind of a second serve,
a little kick serve cut out there.
And then if you're patient,
you can pick a couple holes where it's like,
all right, I'm gonna let one fly here.
But you just, most courses, I'm going to let one fly here. Yeah.
But you just, most courses, man, like you're long enough.
I'm long enough.
We're going to have less than seven iron in, you know, and you're just not going to get
in that much trouble.
And it just makes it more fun.
You can get like, you were talking a lot about rhythm and I felt like I had a ton of rhythm
yesterday.
You know, I went back, I was testing the claw out with you up in the north and on
the coast of Connecticut and I'm still testing it out.
Break some news here.
Um, but I went back to traditional grip cause I was like, all right, we're
hitting cups and this is kind of a serious event and this is a dignified
event and I roll it in here with the claw.
Yeah.
I need to, I need to do some more testing first in a controlled environment.
Uh, no, yeah, I don't want to, I'm not latching right now.
Um, and I putted a little
bit of a honeymoon face. So sometimes I think you also got to shock the system of like talking to
Joe Heisman. I don't know, man. He showed up to the course, like draw or fade. I don't know,
claw or traditional, like, let's just figure it out, like before we play and then stick with it.
So I just didn't overcomplicate it. And I made, you know, I putted good, not great. I, I, um,
it was boring round of golf. And that's, that's what I'm excited about. It's like, man, he's just
shooting even like it kind of was no big deal. And that's where we, that is when I'm like,
yeah, dude, it's not like a whole, uh, I didn't, I didn't feel like it was very hard. And so I'm,
I'm excited. Obviously now my expectations are up. I'm going to go shoot f*****g 91 and it's med am event, but, uh,
you know how it goes.
Well, let me, uh, if you don't mind, I don't know if you,
I don't know if you talk about this publicly, but, uh,
you kind of broke some news when after we cut a podcast the other day,
I didn't realize you're, you're working with,
I don't know if you call it a mental coach, a mental advisor.
Yeah, straight up a sports psychologist.
Yeah.
But John Trombe, what a great niche.
He's a, I think he's finishing his PhD and he hit, he sent me an email.
It was like, Hey man, I'm, I think he's looking for some reps.
Yeah.
I just need to see some live.
He's a high level golfer.
I think he's put some mid am stuff.
And he was like, I,
you know, if you want to hop on the phone and do a few sessions, like, let me know. I was like,
hell yeah. Like it kind of just, we spend like an hour every couple of weeks. I, I had,
I got to reschedule like our third or fourth session. I got to catch up with them. I'll have
a lot to talk about this week. So I'll try to look them up before the hall, the 4th of July.
Well, I'm not trying to connect unnecessary dots here, but like, I mean, I'm guessing
you're not grinding right now, practicing your face.
So like, I don't want to assign too much value to that, but are you feeling that like while
you're playing?
Like there's gotta be some, yes.
Yeah.
So like, what are the, what are your takeaways?
What do you, what do you feel like is different? So our first couple of sessions,
one thing we talked about was,
I, as a human being,
and like in business, like what we do,
I have a good bullshit radar.
I don't like to bullshit people.
Like when we're working with a partner or something,
I like to under promise and over deliver.
I like to lay out like,
here's what we're gonna do for you
and we're gonna hit this.
And we probably won't do much more than that.
Or if there's like ways we can,
like, you know, it's gotta be, you know,
something that makes sense, right?
And I think that that has served me well
from a career standpoint.
But his argument was like, man,
most golfers are like sociopaths.
Like you kind of have to maybe have a piece
of your personality that can believe your own bullshit.
Cause he's like, I can tell that you base a lot
on like history, like historical context.
Like, well, that doesn't make sense.
Like, you know, you, you don't believe your own bullshit
basically was his point.
And he was like, you kind of, you know,
you need to like allow yourself to like
let it fly a little bit better.
So that was one thing that I thought was interesting.
Like don't, don't hold yourself back.
Don't, you know, cause I was telling him like sometimes I'll, if I make a
few putts early in the round, I'll be like, Oh, I'm gonna, I'm going to snap
back to the mean, like the odds would say I'm not going to make, you know,
two more 15 footers.
And he was like, just, you got to like, figure out a way to stifle that. So that, that's something I've been
thinking about a lot and that just being conscious of helps. It's like, no, just kind of operating
a vacuum a little bit better. And I think the more impactful thing in yesterday, and
I shot 69, you know, a few weeks back, which was like a total breakthrough
was I, in talking to him, I, and I was, I was writing something too about like hole in ones.
And I was like, man, I have not had a hole in once in sixth grade. And it was an awful hole in one.
I can't remember the last time I aimed at a flag stick outside of like a hundred yards.
You know what I'm saying? I'm always, I have gotten so in my head about like place sensible. Go to, so I'm always
buying insurance like two yards left or two yards, right? It's never just like, or, or
even like a fuzzy circle, you know, like I'm aiming somewhere kind of in that fuzzy, a
10 foot radius sort of thing. But in his point, it's kind of nuanced was like, you can't do that all day,
but there will be guaranteed the way you hit driver.
If you're like, your game goes with your driver,
which is true.
If I'm hitting the driver, well, there's going to be looks.
And he's like, there's probably going to be four around
where it's like, yo, you're allowed to make that.
You need to tell it like, and in the key though,
is you can't say like, dude, I'm going to make this, you know?
And then when you don't, you're like, you're so full of shit.
You know, that's, that's how I would talk to myself.
Like you're fucking idiot.
It's like, no, but what you can say is if you frame it like, man, why
don't you try to make this one?
Like, why don't you just stare at the flag stick, simplify this, stop
trying to buy insurance left or.
Hey, if we do miss, let's miss right.
You know, like, or the worst thing I do is
the downside thinking, like you start talking about, don't hit it left. It's like, don't
talk that way. It's like, no, hit it at that flag stick. It's right in the center of the
green. Like this is a green light. There's going to be four of them around. Now, if you
pick one, that's not a green light, like, yeah, you might mess it up. That's a decision.
If you can, like, it was kind of like what Russ Henley was telling us about like evaluating
the lie, like evaluating the shot, like, yo, this is one of those moments.
And that hit me like a lightning bolt of like, man, that's freeing to know that you shouldn't
do that every time.
It's not a one size fits all mental tool.
But if you can be conscious of it where you're like, man, I am in the middle of the fairway. I have 115 yards and the flagstick is really not in a spot that is like going to hurt me.
Like you can try to make this shot, like try to put it in the fucking hole.
It's really like that's as simple as it gets.
And it's like I, the day I shot 69, I did that and it was like, oh my God, I just hit
the three feet.
Oh my God. Next to I just hit it to five feet.
You know, and yesterday there were a few of those.
And I, you know, there's a couple of execution errors,
but I just think that that puts me on offense
in the right setting.
And when I'm at my best is like, I am playing on my,
you know, I'm leaning forward.
Now that cuts both ways.
You can't do that all day. And that I think is where I'm starting
to solve the riddle a little bit of knowing when not to do that is you got to be patient.
Because there were some holes where I was like, I did play away from danger. I did hit a bunty cut
off the tee instead of trying to nuke one. You got to pick your spots, I think is maybe the simple
way to put it. So that's what we've been talking about. A lot of that.
God, I love it. It's funny. I went out, we didn't mention this from the title of shoot,
but one of the other people we talked to was Parker McLaughlin, the short game chef. And
I was like, you know, I've had some well-documented chipping woes that I would love to have, you
know, to clean up. And I thought he gave me a lot of really good stuff to work on.
Uh, which, which you can see in that video when it comes out, but I went to,
I have a pitch, like very small pitch and putt course by my house.
And I had some time on Saturday morning and was like, was up early and was like,
Oh, I'm going to go buzz over there.
I can play, you know, 18 holes of par three golf and 50 minutes.
And then I'll, I'll be home.
And I didn't, I was thinking about that on like the third hole.
I was like, Oh yeah, it's funny.
Neil was just talking to me about all this whole, like, uh, you know,
maybe she's just trying to make it type stuff.
Like, this is like a 45 year, 45 yard hole.
Like what, why are you like trying not to hit a bad shot?
Like, what have you just tried to make it?
And I hit the stick.
Yeah.
Which was pretty funny.
He hit it to like a foot. And, uh,
it was just a funny, like, listen, did I do that on every hole? Like,
I still had the same thought on every hole.
That was the only time that happened, but it was the first time.
And it really, well, when was the last time that happened? That's my,
it's like, at the very least, like there's you, it's almost like, man,
I am allowed to drink soda on the weekends. Like as a kid, I wasn't,
it was like, I actually felt that way with the short game chef. It was like, he's telling us like on certain
shots, you can break your wrist here. I grew up like chipping, never break your wrist. Like you
can't do that ever. Like it's like, no dude, check it out. You can watch an R rated movie now,
but you can flip the wrist a little bit thick line. You gotta get the ball up.
Whoa. You mean I'm allowed to
do that. That's crazy. Absolutely. Yeah. Well, the last thing kind of on your, on your game here,
talk to me about the putting you've been, uh, you've been exploring some, some ideas with the
putting I have, I was with you and you saw the claw. I've been a little just unsure of my stroke.
And again, I haven't practiced a lot of,
I'm struggling to practice, especially putting,
like if I get a chance to practice, I, like I said,
I feel like my game goes as my driver goes.
So I want to go to the sim and work on that
and work on my wedge distances.
And it's hard for me to find a putting green to go
do some real putting work. But I did experiment with the claw. I've seen TC make so many putts.
I felt like, man, this could be a legitimate option, but it would be premature for me to
put into play in like a pressure situation, like a tournament. I just don't feel like,
you know, outside of 20 feet, it doesn't feel comfortable. And I just don't want the indecision when I'm trying to hit cups and make five footers to qualify for something. So
I'll probably stick with traditional grip, but even messing around with it, going back to the
traditional grip almost gave me a fresh start a little bit. And I actually called up Dr. Sashio
at the stack system. They now have a new putting system in the stack app,
which I would encourage like everybody to go check out. And it's, I was like, Hey man,
if you have like, it was like 20, 20, spent 20 minutes on the phone with them earlier
this week. And I was like, I just want to know what just from the source, like what
the concept here is. And it's basically like kind of a controlled experiment. So he's like,
you basically open the app, you'll set up a session.
It's gonna take you through an 18 hole putting course.
Like, so all you need is a putting green.
And the app's just gonna call out to you like,
okay, first putt, nine feet downhill, left to right.
So you just gotta go on the putting green, find that.
And what you do is you line it up,
do your process, hit the putt,
and then you basically just either you can voice it or you can click buttons on the app.
Their app is so like, it's got really good UX,
but you're trying to put in the binary result of the putt.
I missed it low and it went four feet by, low.
And then you can kind of like say, was that a bad read?
Like, what do you think?
Was that a bad read or was that bad speed or both? So you kind of, some of it is a little bit subjective, but you're trying
to kind of just describe almost like a diary. And then you, you know, you'll, if it's inside
three feet, it's like, you can pick it up. It's a two putt, but if it's outside, like,
okay, putt that and then go to the next hole, it's probably going to be like a 15 footer
uphill, right to left. So you do that through 18 holes. And then at the end, you know, it spits out like,
okay, here's your session.
And honestly, immediately it's gonna tell you like,
hey, you miss, you have a tendency to miss
right to left putts low,
and you have a tendency to over read left to right putts.
And you know, you miss them high as an example,
or like uphill versus downhill.
He was saying you need probably four sessions to get like a statistically
relevant number in there.
But I think the most interesting part for my situation, cause I was telling
him about the claw and I'm like, kind of in between, what should I do?
He was like, you can tag each session with.
Hey, maybe testing baby.
Yes.
Basically like, yo, go do one with the claw.
Go do one traditional or do four and four would be ideal, you know, over time.
Or if you wanted to try a new putter, he's like, he used the example,
like Xander switched to one of those like Wyndham Clark won the U S open with it,
like the arm lock putter. And he like convinced himself that like, no, dude,
this is, this is it. Like I'm, I'm lights out with this putter. And it was like, no, dude, this, he like, I think he might, I don't know if he's himself that, no, dude, this is it. I'm lights out with this putter. And it was
like, no, dude, I think he might, I don't know if he's a stack, but it was like, the stats said no.
So we, and I think you and I are big self-diagnosers. I'm like, no, man, I'm riding
the honeymoon phase. And it was just nice to be like, oh, this is an actual, I don't want to say
scientific, but as controlled as I've ever found way to, yo, if you
just give it a little bit of time, don't rush this change in
putting stroke, but feel free to test it. Like you can mess
around with it for, you know, but do it in a way that you can
actually like measure it, I think. And or if you, yeah, I
want to test out a new putter, like a blade versus a mallet, or
he was saying he did this with he's an a new putter, like a blade versus a mallet. Or he was saying he did this with
he's an eyes up putter, like Spieth. So he looks at the hole when he puts and he's like, I've tested
it both ways. I'm just a better putter if I look at the hole. And he's like, I feel very confident
the data tells me that. And I was like, dude, that is giving me a lot of confidence. Like, I don't
know how quickly I can do four sessions of this, but I know that when I like, I'm
going to do it.
Do you know what I'm trying to say?
Like I love that I can use this tool.
I do a couple of things.
We just put out a reel about the stack wedges, which is a very similar concept.
And what I love about it is like, it's not a novel, it's not a novel concept, right?
I mean, like hit numbers and see how you do and, you know,
then hit another number and see how you do there.
But it's the organization of all that data
that is the step that I think a lot of people
aren't gonna take, right?
And it's very easy to do
and it's very easy for them to organize.
And that's where what I love about it so much
is having the confidence,
like you're talking about Sasho being an eyes up putter is like when you're just having
a little bit of a, a little bit of a callback or a little bit of a, uh, validation of that,
even if it's, you know, just kind of your own data that you're putting together, at
least gives you more confidence as you're stepping over the next five footer.
And you're like, Ooh, should I look eyes up or should I not? It's like, no, we've done the whole process. Yeah.
And we know that, you know, the data is showing us this. Like it just like a little bit of
a way to do your own fitting. Yeah. Well, it's the same way of like, it just gives you
more confidence over, you know, I feel the same way over a 95 yard shot because I'm like,
man, the app has told me like I'm doing a really good shot, really good job from 95 yards. You know what this swing feels like. You practice this like just,
it's like, of course you're going to execute that one better having all that background.
But, and I'm just a better, like even with working out, like if I have a little workout plan, I just,
it just goes better, you know? And it's like, I, putting's always been a hard one for me to,
you know, like, Oh, I'm going to go practice my putting and he spent like 10 minutes just dinking
around the putting green, not really doing anything like that useful.
He was also saying Mike we're, I don't know, this has turned into a whole thing.
Stack system.com forward slash NLU code.
No laying up for 10% off.
But the last thing I'll say about it is it creates like a spider graph.
He was saying, like my way of organizing data,
like our superfoods from the title of shoot is putting it in
the notes app on my iPhone. You know, and it's like, well, what
if you put it into a, like an app where it would shoot out?
You say Mike Weir is awful at left to right putt. He like
overreads all his left to right putts in this graph. It was like the data golf graph. It was like he was way lower at left to right putt. He like overreads all his left to right putts. And this graph, it was like the data golf graph.
It was like, he was way lower on left to right
versus right to left.
And he just, I think he,
can't remember if he overreads him or underreads him.
And so he was like, oh, that's great intel.
I, everything, whatever I think the read is,
I should just like buy a little bit more.
Nudge it a little bit more.
Yeah. Yeah.
Cause like I, for some reason,
I just don't read this properly. So anyway, that's all stuff that gets me excited though. Like I know that's
kind of like, you know, that's an, that's an ad basically, but it's, it's also like,
man, I feel like I have a plan in place and I was so, I want to turn it to you. I listened
to your golf spotlight this morning, walking PD around the neighborhood. I loved it. Got a real kick out of the, I remember that sitting in the car after that
Jack's beach round when we both shot like mid to high eighties. Like what are we doing,
dude? We have no excuses. We stink and we shouldn't stink. Like we-
Don't stink. I'm sick and tired of being a nobody. I think one thing that I've noticed, can I give you my, I think Randy nailed it with,
if you hit the fairway golf is fun. And I think long story short, like, what do I think
you're out there for? Like you're a vibratory guy. You're out there for a good time. Not
a long time. Sure. Like long-term, right? I think if you're not enjoying yourself, you're
never going to, like, I don't think it's, I don't think you for a good time, not a long time. Sure. Like long-term, right? I think if you're not enjoying yourself, you're never going to, like, I don't think it's,
I don't think you have, I think you have to, you to me love competing.
Like you don't, you want to be competitive.
You don't need to be the best golfer on the course, but I think you need to be,
I got to clear a certain bar. You want to hit the shots.
You want to be in the match.
You know, you don't want to be in your pocket.
And I think that starts off the T. Now, the other thing I've noticed since you went to
TPI, I feel like TPI is a bit of a Pandora's box.
I felt this way for myself.
I think I've done a good job managing the information.
It's like, it's like knowledge is power And it can have a downside where it's like,
oh, so you're telling me that if I get my left foot involved, I could hit it 25 yards farther.
Like it's hard. You have to have self-control to not do that. But I think I've done a good job being
like, you don't have to do that. And I think that you could groove. I'm not going to call it like,
Sally said you have like a fatal swing, swing flaw.
It's like maybe, but also I've seen you hit the JB Holmes sloppy, spinny cut. Like you
can do that, man. Like you could groove that in your garage. Like you just need something
you can count on. And I feel like when I played golf with you last week, you know, three rounds,
I feel like on the tee, you let it creep in like, well, what if we try
that TPI stuff?
Or what if we, you know, like, because it's true, it's like, I'm the same way.
It's like, man, I know what a good swing, I now know the feeling and kind of the foundation
of what like a four level good golf swing is because we've been around it.
We've been hanging out with Greg Rose and that can be like, it's almost tempting.
And it's like, well, don't do that yet.
Like, you know, you can do that in the future.
Like you could go do the drills over the winter.
And like, if you put the time in, but until then, man
I think you got to swing your swing.
And sometimes when I'm watching you play, when I'm with you
I don't feel like you're swinging your swing.
I feel like you're trying to change your swing
in the moment. And I don't, that's what I don with you. I don't feel like you're swinging your swing. I feel like you're trying to change your swing in the moment. And I don't, that's what I don't like.
I think that's, I think that's right. Uh, and I guess my, my build on that would be,
so I played this week once. I, I very lucky got out to Aaron Hills. Shout out to those
guys had a great walk out there. Really, really enjoyed it. It's a place like a lot of the
golf courses I was talking about in that podcast, pretty open off the tee.
It's not, you know, not pretty open, very open off the tee.
Uh, and so you can kind of hit it out there.
You're not trying to fit it between trees and all that stuff.
And so on one hand that made me feel a little better to, to swing it.
But on the other hand, it kind of allows license to do exactly what you're
talking about and be like, all right, we know the fields, we know the positions, let's just get in there.
And like, if we hit it right or we hit it left, we're going to figure it out and it's
going to be fine.
And what has hit me in such a clear way.
And again, I know this is like super obvious, but I just can't be thinking swing thoughts
over the ball.
And I can have certain
feels at the very most one. Right. And I think like a lot of
it's set up stuff. I got like, I know I put the kind of a faux
bat signal out like, yeah, go ahead. DJ reads the comments.
Just fire them up, man. Whatever. I did get a couple
very thoughtful, very tactful emails from some people just
like, Hey, first of all, I got a ton of messages from people just like,
Oh, man, I was nodding my head the whole time.
Thank you so much for saying it all out loud.
It's exactly how I felt for a decade, and I just have contemplated
quitting the game.
So that was cool.
I'm glad a lot of people enjoyed it.
But another person was like, All right, here's kind of what I
did. I'm not going to bore you with all this hyper specifics, but the big thing was just like, man right, here's kind of what I did. I'm not going to like bore you with all this hyper specifics. But
the big thing was just like, man, be militant about your
setup. Be militant about your commitment. And be militant
about not thinking swing stuff over the ball. And one thing
I've always joked about was like, I asked Ben one time, I
remember like, Hey, Ben, what's your swing thought over the
ball? Like what's you know, you got like something you go with?
And he's like, I don't know. I just like think about flushing it.
And I'm like, okay, well, I can't do that.
I got to think about like 35 other things, man.
You know, that's crazy.
But then when I'm starting to realize like, and again, it's just one round of golf is like,
like, honestly, if you can at least put that in your head, it's almost like a placeholder.
You know what I mean?
Where it's like, a little bit like aim with a flag stick.
Yeah.
It's a little bit like, well, ifstick. Yeah, it's a little bit like well
If you're thinking flush it as silly as that might sound
You're not thinking left heel and you're not thinking or right heel and you're not thinking left foot and you're not thinking don't cast
And you're not like you're just kind of thinking flush it. I'm like, ah, that actually does man
Maybe that's the way to you know, at least in the very temporary
Interim like maybe that's the way to to trick yourself into getting out of the swing
thoughts, you know, and then like, to your point, it's like, there's practice
stuff on the, on the driving range.
Like, yeah, man, we'll try to improve.
Try to improve your swing.
Yeah.
And that's not what I'm saying, but in the meantime, you have enough talent at
golf, I firmly believe that like you can hit a controlled cut off of every T-box.
I really think so. I just don't.
I think you.
It's not because I go through this, too.
It's like, well, I don't like the way that looks.
And I know that that's not technically right.
And I struggle with I still struggle with that.
I think one other thing I'd add that has been really helpful for me lately.
Another we I hung out. you hadn't arrived yet, but at the title of shoot, I hung out with the me and my golf
guys. I kind of told them about like what I'd been working on at TPI. And like, I was telling
Greg Rose, one of my wishes was, I just want to know what it feels like to get inside out on the
golf ball. I don't want to hit a draw, but I want to know how to get there in case when this big spinning
right miss starts to flare up. Like, how do I solve that? It's basically like, what's the antidote?
What's the snake vet? You know, the, I got bit by a snake. How do I get rid of this? You know,
like my, my leg is swung up. I, how do I suck the blood out? Uh, and they, they were like militant about address posture. And I think that if there was
something, I am not thinking about swing thoughts like yesterday, I was thinking all about posture.
So my address posture, and I've gotten to the point where I had the kind of
arched back, which was bad in putting my spine. So I had to change that. And now I've probably overcompensated and have too much of an,
a curve, like a, you know, I've gone too far the other direction.
And they were like,
you're going to feel like you're on your toes a little bit,
but you're too deep on your heels. You know, so like,
but me thinking about, and you've said this to me, like when I'm,
when you see me playing my best, it's when I'm being an athlete. And I think that starts with like an athletic posture.
And so it's like getting like almost feeling my quads flex and like almost getting these
like muscular feelings before I take the club back. And it's like, damn dude, that's really,
that's almost distracting me from thinking about left heel and pressure and drop, drop
the chain and like we, I brother, I got them all upads are firing because that means you're not back in your heels. And that means you're like, you have a sound base and it's just like, yeah, I hit
some, I hit like one bad drive, but like, I hit like one bad drive, but like, I hit
like one bad drive. And then I hit like, I hit like one bad drive. And then I hit like
one bad drive. And then I hit like one bad drive. And then I hit like one bad drive.
And then I hit like one bad drive. And then I hit like one bad drive. And then I hit like back in your heels and that means you're like, you have a sound base and it's just like,
yeah, I hit some, I hit like one bad drive, but like, I don't know, even the misses, I,
you know, a couple of my, it didn't hit like, it didn't come out the right window, but it
just like simplified the dispersion. You know, I was like, damn dude, that just doesn't feel
like as much bad stuff is going to go wrong versus like, let me flatten the hands and shit at
like, you're swinging at 175 miles an hour. Like you think you can stop the car. Like
what the fuck are you talking about, dude? Like it doesn't make any sense. What are we
doing? You know? So I would say, and I think what I love about that is that posture and
like target, especially like, okay, make sure you're aligned properly, which I struggle with, honestly, for sure. Shoulders being open or closed,
but like those are all pre-shot stuff is all controllable. And so, and I've got some, some
friends are getting into golf and you know, they're like, Hey, do you, you, you have any
tips? I'm like, move it an inch back in your stance, move it an inch up. Like don't really we're out on the course.
You can't really do anything else.
You know, it's like, I can't tell them like, yeah, dude, you're over the top.
He's not going to know what that means.
Cover the ball.
Like what, you know, it's like stupid.
Just like, no, like just make sure you're on the power, the power change.
So I feel like in, in it's almost a combo of like, all right, we're,
we're activating the mental coach.
Shout out to John. We're hanging out with Russ Henley and he's like, I'm like, I'm like, yeah, man, we're just like, let's focus on like the, all the pre-shot checklist that you can control.
Like let's get into the best position possible.
And then just like, let it, let it fly.
I think.
Well, and then it's kind of comes down when you talk like, when people talk
about owning their swings and swinging your swing, like, you know,
like, you know, like, you know, like, you know, like, you know, like,
like, you know, like, you know, like, you know, like, you know, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like,. And then just like, let it, let it fly. I think. Well, and then it's kind of comes down when you talk like,
when people talk about owning their swings and swinging your swing and doing
all that stuff, it's so funny to hear you talk about it like that. Where's like,
yeah, you can control where your feet are pointed and your shoulders and your
setup and you take as much time as you want, make sure all that stuff's right.
Do you think that like in the next one and a half seconds, like you're,
you're going to change the move that you've been making for 32 years now?
And, uh, you know, you're just gonna like, just,
just microns different on this swing versus the last one.
Like, no, it's probably going to be a little bit of come what may man.
So why don't we just dance with, uh,
with the one we got here and just make sure all that other controllable stuff
is as dialed as possible.
And I think what I truly believe is that if you accept for now,
like this season, let's say the over the top cut, the patented DJ Moab,
mother of all Bunts, I think you can eliminate the snipey left ball.
I really do.
I think the snipey left ball comes out when you try your, it's almost
like I can see you trying your hardest to change the swing. You're like, like you're
trying to, to get the feel of like what you learned at TPI. And it's like, just don't
do that. Honestly, just like open your fucking stance up and just cut it. Yeah. Like I know
you can do that. Like that, that I always laugh. It's like, man, I love
it when I'm behind a tree and you need me to hit a massive slice. Three wood. I can
do that on command. I know how that feels. I wish that hitting a straight ball felt like
that. I was a chacho throw the hips, let it fly, baby. Get out in front and open club
face. That thing is going to spin it like 8,000 RPMs. It's awesome. I was, uh, we got to like number 17 at Aaron this week.
And I was playing with my buddy Dylan and hit a great drive in the fairway and
was just in like this horrible divot, like right in the middle of the fairway.
And I stepped up the same thing. I was like, Oh sweet.
Like I know how to hit it out of a divot. Just like move it back in the stance,
hit down on it, compress it. And I hit this like a great five iron,
like just one of the shots of the day. And I'm like walking up there and Dylan's
like, Hey, have you ever thought about just like compressing it every time?
I'm like, Oh yeah, maybe I should,
maybe I should just kind of hit down on it. Just pretend that hit me at the title.
Just like play super slappy and holding on for dear life.
Like maybe I should try to do these long golf trips.
I always end up moving it back in my stance and hitting that like compressed cut.
It's like you can play good golf from that position.
Like, and you said it on your pod.
Like if you want to get to a zero, yeah, you're going to have to make a swing change.
I, I, I'm not going to lie to you, but like you're an eight right now.
You can get to a four with your,
you could definitely play good golf. Like in, in what I think what you're after is like,
be in it, hit the shots, like enjoy the round. Like, cause then I think for you,
once you're in the fairway and once you're kind of making a consistent ball flight,
you're going to make putts. Like you're, you're nice with it when you, when you're vibing though.
But like when you, when you're worn out, I could see it. You're like taking your hat off. You know,
you were saying like, I don't, you know, I don't have the endurance out there. I used
to. And it's like, I see it on like 13 and 14 at shelter Harbor. You're like, man, you
know, you just been out, you've been out in the woods and you got, we got to get you back
in the short grass. And I think then your short game is going to get better.
I love it. Well, listen, let's, this feels like a, this is part one of a long journey
here. So let's, we don't have to do it all tonight. We'll, I'm excited to hear how your
qualifier goes. I'll be back on the golf course this week. You know, we'll see if, if any
of these super foods you're giving me are going to stick. I want to shout out Casey, uh, from our team won the silver state net division of the Nevada state women's AM hardware,
hardware for the squad. Someone who's just banishing the swing thoughts and just
racking up trophies. Can we shout out Ben? Ben won his club championship at Oakwood, uh,
stacking up city. I mean, yeah, this is, uh, we're next Neil, you know, we're next. We got to start getting
some hardware. So I hope you, uh, hope you play well tomorrow, man. What, uh, from a
housekeeping perspective, then we got some nest content that's out there.
Yeah. Well, shout out the, I, we were talking events earlier. I know you played in the supper
club, the Wisconsin roost, like go to events.nolangup.com. Like check out, there's a roost in your area.
I mean it, it's just really like,
if you're just looking to play like good clean golf,
I highly recommend the roost stuff.
I just really enjoyed it as participants.
So I'll shout that out.
Ness content, we're putting out some,
we put out a full interview with Tommy Armour III
from our Las Vegas video.
Full interview with Brian Chavez,
Chavo from Friday Night Lights fame, captain of the Permian Panthers. I'm going to go ahead and get started. I'm going to go ahead and get started. I'm going to go ahead and get started. I'm going to go ahead and get started. I'm going to go ahead and get started.
I'm going to go ahead and get started.
I'm going to go ahead and get started.
I'm going to go ahead and get started.
I'm going to go ahead and get started. I'm going to go ahead and get started. I'm going to go ahead and get started. I'm that stuff. That's all a, I got aligned to buzz too. I haven't, I haven't activated it yet, but I'm working
that. I'm going to work that. You need to hit them up, maybe hit them up. And then of
course, June nest pod is live, a fun Q and a with our, our newest member of the team,
Matt Maramer, good stuff there. Like really fun getting to know Matt's background,
some Q and A from NEST members,
started a message board thread with that too.
So if you're a NEST member, go check that out.
Also, if you're not a NEST member,
you can sign up for our email list
and you can watch or read three NEST only articles,
just as a little teaser, a little app teaser, Dej.
So just go to the website, no laying up.com and just navigate to the nest section.
You'll find that stuff.
Pro shops, stocked new hats, new designs.
We got this racing logo that I love.
It's really good.
We got the lowercase script NLU on all kinds of merch, great T shirt selection.
I know you love the pocket tease.
We got new Yeti mugs and dog
bowls. No laying pups. NLU baby. Trap draw mid-year goals check-in is coming out this
week.
We've never done that before. Everybody loves the goals episode. We've never done a mid-year
like are you actually doing what you said you were going to do and can you turn it around
type of check-in, which was super duper fun. Really enjoyed going through that. So that'll be on the feed. And then on the No Lang Up Pod,
we've got another KVV, good one coming out this week, I believe on Gimme Golf.
We've been talking a lot of golf societies and golf clubs and golf clubs without a golf course.
Creating community. Authentic organic communities. That's right. And that's what they're doing down in St. Louis, Kyle, and the whole gang down there at gimme golf. So KVV went down there the week of the PGA championship, spent some time with them to
uncover kind of what that's all about.
And we got a narrative pod coming out about that.
And I think people are going to really, really love.
So, uh, I will say this, it's, it's rocket.
Don't call me mortgage classic week.
You know, you probably thought it was a classic week. It I will say this. It's, it's rocket.
Don't call me mortgage classic week. You know,
you probably thought let's keep it a tight 60 hour and 51 going on an hour and
52. You know what I feel like? I feel like my boys from goose. Sure. Okay.
Last thing I want to say four and a half hours last night, they,
they kicked it off at just before 8 before 8 PM. They blew through the
MSG curfew. Like I've never seen it. I've been to 12 shows there. Everyone's always
done by 11 max 1130 doesn't like never heard of an artist. Like I think they probably just
gave back all the money they made in like fines. I have to think so. They went to 1230.
They just they were like, you're going to have to
drag us the fuck out of here. And I feel like that's what we're doing tonight. And I just feel like
those guys are hungry, man. Like it just feels the place was sold out. I so much juice. And if
you're not in the jam bands, it was just like, I was like, man, this is like really more energy
than I've felt at a concert. Like it didn't feel like anybody in the room was like here as a status thing.
Do you understand?
Like, Oh, I got tickets to Justin Timberlake.
It was like, no, I am, I was standing next to this guy, Randy, who was like 45.
He's like, dude, I, I, I love these guys.
I had to come to the show.
I was like, me too, dude.
I'm just in my office.
Listen to these guys when I'm doing stuff.
They're awesome.
It was just like good vibes.
I had so much fun.
There's nothing better than being at a show like that.
When everybody walks in on the same page, everybody's on the same team.
There's no competitive, no competitiveness.
Yeah.
I had one, I had one guy, you know, just all out of his mind zonked, like making it about
him in the section over.
You're going to get that rare, but they're rare.
You know, it's like you get out there and make it about you, brother. Yeah. Look're going to get that rare, but they're rare. You know,
it's like you get out there and make it about you, brother. He's not watching the show.
He's trying to, he's like, everybody watched me. I'm like, stay out of my way. But otherwise
I kept it between the mayo and mustard spent my brother-in-law went from Marine park, picked up
my buddy Mills. I mean, the three of us just, just a fantastic night at guys being dudes and didn't get too
tuned up. Had a, had a nightcap at Walters. The international dart championship was at
Hammerstein ballroom Walters in it by MSG has this like dartboard. There were guys in
there with like, Oh, it would like, you know, it looked like some money games going on in
the back. Had it had a Guinness to kind going on in the back. I had it had a
Guinness to kind of cap off the night. It was just like one of those like, man, you
know what? I felt like it was a tough day with the little man, you know, kind of parenting
on, on, on no sleep and, and feeling a little low end, but it was worth it. Worth it. Got,
you know, just kind of like a throwback NYC night. And I really, really enjoyed it.
I love hearing that. I love hearing that. You know what? I'm going to listen to some Goose
tomorrow just for you. I still feel like I haven't really dipped my toe in as
bravely and boldly as I maybe could. It's hard not being there. I think if I went to one show,
it would change a lot. It would be no offense to me if you're like, I don't like that.
You know, it's just like, I just found the music really, I just really enjoy it.
And I just appreciate the gusto with with shows.
Guys are like attacking their opportunity.
It feels like they're on the rise and like surprising the golf balls.
Our guy, KJ, exactly.
They are totally.
And I feel like they're getting better at their instruments.
Like the, the, I think Peter and spots is the, the keyboard, the keyboard organ.
He's got the whole fricking setup.
And it's like, I'm like, I saw him last year and I'm like, man, I just feel like he's
like getting better, you know, like he, and they, they had another drummer,
but that guy got dropped.
I think, you know, he might've been super H or something. Big to do. I remember that. Well, they had a drummer,
that guy left, they got a new drummer and he's just like a ball of energy. And I mean,
four and a half hours of just, this guy is just all like, he's like a, you know, exploding
star. I got to look up. I'm sure it's, but now they're just, and I thought the second drummer was always a little bit of clutter.
And now it feels like, man, these guys have some room to, to just run and they're filling
up the, you know, the sound is just, it's, there's a lot of depth, man.
They brought in a horn section.
I don't know.
I just felt, um, felt good about it.
And I, I just, uh, I was like, man, I listen to these guys all the time and just like see
it live. You close your eyes to it, a show like that. And you're like, God, dude, this is, this is, this just, uh, I was like, man, I listen to these guys all the time
and just like see it live.
You close your eyes to it, a show like that.
And you're like, God, dude, this is, these guys are killing it.
They're killing it.
Deid, you know, and I'm not like the biggest music guy, you know?
So I'm like, I'm just truly enjoyed it.
So great, great weekend, great hanging out with you tonight.
Yeah.
Likewise.
And thank you to everybody for listening. That's was, this was a, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'll go listen to the rocket rocket classic, like our 40.
Yeah.
Aldrich pocket or one.
Yeah, it's all there.
No, I got, I got way into it at the end of the classic pod back in 25.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Some good stuff that you'll like on the back end too.
All right guys, let's get out of here.
We'll, we'll see you guys next time.
Cheers.
