Starting point is 00:00:00 Be the right club today. I mean, that's better than most. How about him? That is better than most. Better than most. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the Nolenga podcast, Noling Up live show. Guys, the first day of the Masters comes, but once a year. And we had a great one today, if I may say, some great stuff going on.
Starting point is 00:00:52 We've got Rory McElroy and Sam Burns in the league. We've got a bunch of great chasers. Solly was out there on the golf course, watching it all unfold. Solie, how are you, my man? You know, my good friend, Randy, once said, had some very wise words and says, you know, you can't win the Masters on Thursday, but you can't lose it. I almost lost it today. I went too hard.
Starting point is 00:01:10 I'm tired. I went iced coffee at like 7 o'clock tonight just to just to get some re-energize for tonight because got about 40,000 steps in probably today. We were working hard on the beat out there. I love it. I love it. Hopefully making some phone calls. We'll see. We'll check on that later.
Starting point is 00:01:29 The great man, Randy's going to be, he's going to be coming through later. Neil's going to be coming through later. Neil's big brother is here. Of course, Tron, weird day for you. Awesome day. P. Reed, Tommy Fleetwood. Bryson falling apart and getting chippy. I mean, there's just so many directions for you to go today.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Yeah, I woke up. I was ungodly hungover this morning. Really? Oh, that's right. Happy belated birthday. poke up and just, yeah, just laid on the couch and watch the Masters for 12 hours straight. It's great. I love it.
Starting point is 00:02:01 I really look forward to having the John Rom discussion. I think I look forward to that as well. I got early deflection from the Ludwig discussion. I thought we'd get there in the first five minutes. It's a very impressive. He had a little brown out for about four holes there. But I don't think we need to have the big Ludwig discussion tonight. I think we need to have the discussion of the guy that shot 78 today.
Starting point is 00:02:22 I think we need to probably discuss a lot of things today, guys. And this week is an absolute showcase. We know that the golf course, the players, the patrons, the merch, the pageantry. There's so much to take in, guys. Also a showcase for the brands. You're likely to see them showing up, showing off, showing out this week more than any other. No one has done it more often, more consistently than our friends at foot joy. This year always, as always, foot joy is the number one shoe at the Masters.
Starting point is 00:02:49 and we're seeing their full arsenal on display from the premiere series Wilcox, the Packards and the fields to the hyperflex, traditions and pro SL, a golf shoe for every player and every moment, including the biggest stage in golf. When it matters most, the world's best players choose footjoy.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Speaking of foot joy, I saw a little bit of, you know, there's always special edition things going on at the Masters. I saw some special edition foot joys out there. You know, looked like Cam Young maybe had a little something going on. on. Maybe Mason Howell, the young amateur, uh, had something going on.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Uh, just a, a good, you know, a good little weekly, weekly special that they had going on. Maybe a little homage to tea olive, uh, the first hole at Augusta. Keep an eye out for that, uh, as, as the week kind of rolls on here. But as like I said, we got it, we had a really good day at the master. Sam Burns, Roy McElroy, both five under par 67 today. Kurt Kittiyama, Jason Day, solid. We heard all those bird bets that were getting placed. Maybe start clearing out some space in your backyard for some new bird feeders. The great man, P. Reed.
Starting point is 00:03:56 They are all in at 69. And then Shane Lowry, Zander Shoffley, Justin Rose and Scotty Schephler, all in at 70. After that, I was going to start by asking you guys what the story of the day is. I'm going to grab the ball here and just say, it's Roy McElroy, guys. He won the Career Grand
Starting point is 00:04:14 Slam. Last year, he did not look great on the front nine today. The first couple of holes. He was he was shaky. He was kind of driving it all over the lot. And I think we saw a little bit of that, you know, playing free, playing loose. Let me just kind of watch me make par from here type of type of vibe. And it all added up to 67 at the end of the day. Solly, I don't know if you saw any of Rory or if you want us to take this. I didn't see a ton in person, but I got of course, courtesy of going to masters.com and go watch the whole round in about five minutes. And I expected to see like, all right, just bully. Rory McElroy. Roy.
Starting point is 00:04:48 like here he goes freed up going to dominate and what i i don't i guess i'm i walked away kind of complicated feelings about this round i think the one takeaway i did have though was like man we i feel like we've been saying for like a decade and a half now this course is and should be tailor made for your game uh and you know like the scale just fits the the length of his t shots and the scale of the hole should fit really really well and like you watch and he hits it to like hit like 106 yards into the 14th hole today is kind of what i'm what i'm getting at there. It was an imperfect round from him that he shot five under. Like you watch a bunch of, you know, some pretty shaky approach shots that just kind of end up in the right spots around the
Starting point is 00:05:30 green. It looked like a veteran round from Rory, a round where he didn't press when he was even par through seven and hitting it all over the map and then just took care of business, made a couple puts. Like, you know, Scotty had a couple misses from, you know, from good range on, on eight, on 15 and his day probably looks a lot different. Rory makes a bomb putt on 15 and his round looks a lot prettier at minus 5. So I don't, I don't know. I don't know what to say to the, he didn't like, he didn't play perfect, did not play amazing golf, but shoots 500 has the lead. That could mean one of two things like unsustainable or like, hey, he got maybe kind of cut away with less than perfect golf and shot 500 and his best golf's ahead of him. But man, it's, it's,
Starting point is 00:06:08 it's a, I did not expect 500 par out of Rory today. It was, it was a little quiet on the chatter going into this week and an incredible, incredible start for me, now the favorite to win this year. T.C., what did you see out of the rib today? Yeah, it seemed like today, like maybe today was going to be the toughest round for him to, you know, coming off a Tuesday night and, you know, all that. And I think got this one out of his system and first round leader, 67. And I think like Sally said, I can go one of two ways. He can keep it rolling, clean it up, especially off the a little bit or he can you know kind of be exposed in certain spots of not being as sharp as he has been in years past so i'll be very very curious to see what uh which direction it goes tomorrow um
Starting point is 00:06:55 that's and he's out in the afternoon tomorrow yeah i can't wait to watch crispy as it hell tomorrow yeah i can't wait to watch his round of golf tomorrow right like today today i think it's um it's where everybody's head goes i think you know is like oh man the pressure off. He talked about it. It's not just, it's not just the Masters that I was trying to win. It's the Masters and the Grand Slam at the same time and all the scar tissue and teeing it up for the first time this year, like, without all of that has to be a wildly different feeling to where when you do drive it in the trees, it's kind of like, oh, I mean, it's not the end of the world. Whereas I feel like in previous years, it probably was like a,
Starting point is 00:07:32 all right, let me get back. Let me, let me go win this. Oh shit. Right now. Yeah, totally. And it just, it felt like a living, breathing, embodiment of like the golfers cliche today, which is like, man, when you just kind of hold it pretty loosely and you can just kind of take the punches as they come, it turns out that it always adds up to something a little better than it looks like. And that was like when he did snap in and he hit those drives on, you know, what was it, 14 and 17.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Some of those, just like, holy shit, man. If he figures the driver out a little bit, like it's, yeah, of course we're going to see two in a row, you know. He gained strokes off the tee on the front nine. He's being still far. That's what I mean about the course fitting his game so well was like, dude, I don't know if he could have driven it much worse on those replays. And he still gained off the T.
Starting point is 00:08:20 And like the shot though that I was blown away by, I've gone back and watched it like four times. I assume it was three wood. I don't think he has a five wood in the bag this week. I could be wrong. On eight. On eight. He's in the right rough and just hits like a choked up.
Starting point is 00:08:33 So good. Running three wood onto the green and makes an easy two put birdie. But yeah, he cleaned out. He birdied all the par fives, birdied nine, hit a great shot in there and made a great put on that one. And then birdied 14 after flipping a wedge in there from 106 yards. Like that's, again, it just kind of felt like the what should be the median round for Rory at Augustine, what has made the last decade and a half frustrating. And even when he all went his way last year, he tried it away to give it away.
Starting point is 00:09:03 So I have not bought the freed up Rory thing. But now I'm kind of like, I mean, kind of do, you know, do we just. go in and now see a version of him that is not afraid of a lot of these moments. And watching back him talking about last year, he was like, dude, he was afraid of it. For sure. Yeah, of course. Yeah, it feels lower stakes now.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Yeah, we're in a good way. It is, it's the second lowest opening round of his career. You could probably guess the first one, he's, 65 back in 2011. He also, I mean, it's been a while since he's been able to really hang up a good one in the first round. He hasn't been better than 71, I believe. leave since in the opening round that is since 2018 another good stat last defending
Starting point is 00:09:46 champ to lead after 18 like the following year after they won Jordan Speeth in 2016 so you know watch out for that 10 11 12 and you know maybe you're going to be you're going to be fine but awesome day for Rory we'll hear more Neil's going to jump on the show
Starting point is 00:10:02 a little bit later he followed him closely I know something like maybe pick the wrong holes more stretching came up after seven bad investing by the balloon go there, but we'll see how that goes. T.C., I'll throw it to you. Where do you want to go next as far as stories of the day here?
Starting point is 00:10:18 Let's get Burns out of the way. No slight to Burns, but I just, I didn't see a ton of that round. It was, it was early. It was, you know, obviously Bermuda overseeded with perennial ryegrass, burns. Really good round. I think he, you know, obviously
Starting point is 00:10:34 tied for the lead, but another one where it's, you know, he had the eagle on two, and then, and yeah, just kind of cruise control in the back. Him and him and Rory both. I mean, you're going to hear it over and over and over and over this week, but the whole thing with Augusta National is just go murder the par fives. And I mean, that was kind of Rory's thing.
Starting point is 00:10:53 Was like even on the par fives. I think eight was the only one he even had a chance to hit in two. And he obviously did. But the other ones like he's laying up. He's hitting. He's coming into number two from the trees. He's doing all kinds of things. But still, you know, gets all the par fives as does Sam Burns,
Starting point is 00:11:09 played him in five under. with the eagle on number two. But a couple of things for him there. His record kind of stinks here. You know, I know he's not been a major championship killer outside of those, you know, a couple of U.S. Open appearances the last couple years. But two miscuts and four starts.
Starting point is 00:11:27 His best finish here is T-29. But DataGolf had this as his second best major round of his career after the 65 he shot at Oakmont last year. So we will see how he holds up. DataGolf also had to. some good stuff on his chipping. I didn't realize how bad of a chipper he used to be. They were just kind of setting up a flare for both him and Gary Woodland on, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:50 everything's going great. This is awesome. If the ball striking waivers, watch this space because that's been the other big thing with this firm setup is, it's just kind of my favorite, right? It's like all these stats are like sliders that affect everything else, right? It's like, if you don't drive it in the fairway, your approach game is probably not going to be that good. If your approach game is not that good, it puts a lot of stress on your chipping.
Starting point is 00:12:10 And so it's like you might see chipping numbers are bad and it's actually because somebody's driving it really bad. So it's just a fun week from that from that perspective. And needless to say, the variety of shots you see out there, it's even more telling on the ground. I mean, where the pin was today, like on 14 on the front right knob, which was super good. Dude, I followed so much P.ry today and I swear to God, every time I looked up, I was like, that's another right pin. Another right pin. But it was just interesting. He did.
Starting point is 00:12:37 We'll get to pee. No, let's get there now. Yeah, I think he's the story of the day for me. Like, I'm to the point. That was incredible restraint. Incredible restraint from UTC. I just, like, he came out fire and his swing looks so freaking good. Why does it look so good?
Starting point is 00:12:52 I don't know. Why does it look so different? You said that. I was like, how different could it look? And I looked at the highlights. I was like, damn, man. That's a good looking golf swing right now. He's club twirling absolutely everything.
Starting point is 00:13:03 There's none of that, like, gotter up just kind of like throwing the body at it, hands, their feet getting out of it. It just looks. I mean, birdies won, Eagles two, Eagles eight. It kind of petered out a little bit on the back nine, but he, he battled, though. He's out midday, like 1240, 12, 20, 12, 50 tomorrow. So it'll be interesting. But I think I'm to the point.
Starting point is 00:13:26 I texted you guys this earlier. I think P is like legitimately my favorite player. Favorite player to watch or favorite player? Just like favorite player. Like it's like there's this, it's like Tommy. And then there's this. next rung down and it's like p ludwig the great man team rose in spieth like those four right in that next rung i think so tommy's still still lead dog but pee is just i mean sallie i
Starting point is 00:13:52 heard lady jay was out there she was you know just i heard kind of a a cow girl rodeo chic thing i think rodeo chic is good i heard solie i do want to hear your insights but i think we had some on the ground reporting as well from from our guys scoops Cody maybe on P. Reed. It is a beautiful morning here at Augusta National Golf Club or young Patrick Reed has reached into Augusta's pocket
Starting point is 00:14:21 and stole an eagle on the second hole. Smash and grab, shout up to Keith Foster. He is a man on the loose, wanted man on the front nine Augusta. That was the first crystal. Keith Foster. That's that's biased journalism. Drive by.
Starting point is 00:14:36 Yeah, for sure. What did you see on the ground, Sally? Take us there. What did we miss? It was a, I, back to TCs, be, becoming your favorite golf. It's fun. What fun of funny? Did you have about that?
Starting point is 00:14:50 That like Bryson did like a full rebrand of like, all right, now I'm like a new person. I'm a new man. I'm just going to totally reinvent myself with a facade for the media and everything I do. But P. just stayed the exact course. Didn't change the damn thing. He just decided to come back from live. And it is like a, it, he's become more interesting. he's become i wouldn't say he's become less hated because it is still like we were standing to do the
Starting point is 00:15:13 first tee today and he was the first to tee off on one and uh you know he tees off and my wife kind of mentioned to me he's like oh i didn't even i didn't even hear him get introduced like i didn't hear an applause i was like yeah nobody really clapped for him on one and then when he he made a par put on 11 and like this this like group of people right to the right of me which we didn't realize at the time honestly felt like reed plants of some kind one guy cheered way too loud for like a reed made put and everybody in the city like turned around to look at the guy like what was that like what's that all about and the guy just started muttering stuff under his breath he said something like um he was calling the captain he's like oh should have been on every rider
Starting point is 00:15:54 cup team like saying it really loud to make sure everybody around her like they did this guy so dirty he should be on every rider cup team uh they were like this but so they must have been his I don't know if they were extended family members or what I don't know if they had the keys to the the use golf facts Twitter account whatnot but we we followed for a long long time until we saw lady jay it was quite late in the day she had boots on she had uh writing are they riding bridges when my wife told me that but uh i was getting roasted online britches or breaches i don't know exactly but they have like a leather inset me a let's know when neal comes by well neils in here but you were in a helmet she had a hat on uh with her hair just cut straight across
Starting point is 00:16:36 in the back, you know, big Dolce and Cabana purse and all that stuff. And, uh, and, wait, so, Sally, you left, like, you saw her and then you walked the other way and left the group. Why would, why on earth would you do that? I didn't, I did not leave the group. No, I wrote them. I wrote the P group all the way out. You said, you said you're with the group until you, until you, okay, I was, I was, I was like, wait, did Lady J scare you off or something? No, no, no, no, that, with that group of the, the, the, the plants. I was with them and then eventually, I did not see Lady J. until late in the day is what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:17:07 We were head on a swivel, too. We were looking for it the whole time. I did like this comment here. I heard somebody on the broadcast say, let's go captain. I was like, who the fuck are you talking about? That was what it was.
Starting point is 00:17:20 That's what it was. They kept calling him the captain. He had, he had, like, I love watching him, George Thomas. I mean, he's probably the best chipper of the golf ball
Starting point is 00:17:29 outside of Scotty. It's insane how greasy he is. Have you guys seen the chip he had on 15? He went long in the, the water and I mean we went all way around behind 16 to watch that one and it looked so impossible from there and it it is not like an amazing amazing amazing shot that like to inches but like we watch woodland basically lay up from back there because of how difficult that pitch was and dude I think just to get one on the green yes from that spot is like one of the shots of the day
Starting point is 00:17:57 that's what I'm calling the spirit airlines counter back there like the delta counter's left to the spirit airlines counter like it's a lot more rude and less customer service oriented back 5.15. Dude, 15. He had a log jam back there too. A lot of guys back there today. He had a great shot of 14. He missed in the front bunker on 12, got up and down from there.
Starting point is 00:18:20 Like he's in the swing just looks, it's so short and sought off and efficient right now. There's just not that much that can go wrong. The driver looks much improved over what it was a couple of years ago. I feel like he's just riding momentum from being. at the top of the Fedora 5 for months now. I totally agree. I totally agree. Yeah, it felt a little unsustainment. It did. He gained like three and a half shots putting, I think, today on the field.
Starting point is 00:18:52 And also hold an eagle putt from off the green. Like the putter was just out of control today. And yeah, the pitch he hit up the hill on 14. He almost hold that one. It was awesome to watch him work the magic around the greens. He only gained three quarters of a shot around the greens. The eye test would tell a different story for how difficult a lot of those shots was. Only thing I'll say, Sally, every Datagolf has info going back to the 2021 Masters.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Every Masters, he's gained strokes on the green. He might just put the shit out of this place. Who knows? And he's got all the metal in the world. Metal and bottle. Yeah. It's, God, what a thrill that was seeing him. up at the top of the board.
Starting point is 00:19:37 But I'll go, I'll go next. I'll throw it to Scotty, I think. I mean, I think that felt like just a very interesting round of golf. 70 playing as the golf course probably got its toughest in the afternoon. I think there were a lot of people kind of myself included who watched him play one, two, and three. And we're a little bit like, oh, man, it's too bad. This Masters isn't going to be competitive this year.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Like this is, unfortunately, it's over. And then there was just enough kind of slop in battling the elements and firmness of the greens and things to keep it really interesting. But I think he looked, I think his iron play was probably better even than the numbers made it look. I think about that shot he hit on 14. I don't know if you saw that one, I saw it, but just throwing it out to that left side and catching the perfect part of the slope and dripping it in there to whatever that was, 10 feet, 7 feet. just like one of my favorite shots I saw all day to day. And so I don't know, just kind of a perfect,
Starting point is 00:20:36 a perfect spot where I found myself really, really fantasizing about like Rory and Scotty going head to head on a perfectly conditioned golf course on Sunday. You could sign me up for that. That sounds about as good as it gets. Yeah. I think that's a pretty fair fantasy right now. I mean, it just didn't seem like he had his best stuff today
Starting point is 00:20:58 and he's two under in sixth place. And again, like I just, he kind of seems, still seems inevitable there. I'd be very surprised if we went backwards tomorrow. The, uh, the third shot into 13 looked so difficult today too. So hard. So, yeah. Everybody in that group hit it over? Dude.
Starting point is 00:21:19 He was playing with Woodland and Big Shot Bob, right? I think everybody, everybody hit that pitch shot over the green, which is, means it's hard. Being in person at the mat. It's really, it's awesome to be in person at the masters, of course. It can be very frustrating at times when you're out there of like, gosh, I kind of wish I was in front of a TV right now and I can watch all the shots happening, but also just to be able to see it all up close of what the, we all know about the slopes and the undulation, all that,
Starting point is 00:21:43 but up close of like, dude, how would you ever get this close to this one? I still don't know how anybody ever finishes the 15th hole. I honestly don't. Like how difficult that one was playing today. Where the T shots end up, again, to like, just to the naked eye, I was like, oh, they got to lay up from there. And you just watch them, no, they're just blasting irons over the water. with zero inhibition and zero fear into these greens.
Starting point is 00:22:05 And it just, it blows in watching. I mean, have you guys seen Ludwig's chip on 13? I mean, TC, you see that one? I did see that one.
Starting point is 00:22:13 We saw him go long with his approach. And then like we, I was got distracted. I was talking. I looked up and he was back across Ray's Creek chipping. Like, what in the hell happened? You go back and watch it.
Starting point is 00:22:24 And I'm like, no, this can't be right. There's no way this gets all the way into the water. And it does. And it just like, it was a. tough, tough Thursday setup without being ridiculous, without like a ton of win. That was just a very, very, very difficult setup.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Where I think there's certain, like I was seeing some people kind of complaining of like, no, like I tune into the masters to see birdies and eagles and everything. Like, A, there were plenty of eagles out there today. Yeah. And B, like, I think it's truly like, it's like wine. Like you got to celebrate each vintage for what it is, right? And we get so many years that are that are softer and wetter. And I think, like, let's just lean into it.
Starting point is 00:23:00 of this because it's only going to get like I think they're going to have to water the golf course tonight to slow it down a little bit for tomorrow and then I think once once Saturday hits I hope it just keeps keeps going on this on this trajectory because like this is truly like a once in a lifetime type forecast that we have like it's going to be it's going to inch up into the low to mid 80s the next few days looked a little bit chillier out there today Sally and like it just looks like this is this is the most ideal conditions we've ever seen for a master's i think max had one of my favorite quotes uh i've seen in a master's press conference today he was he was asked about kind of that dividing line between you know a good shot and a great shot and what this course does and yada yada
Starting point is 00:23:43 yada and he basically i hope i'm not paraphrasing this too bad but he basically said every year the winner there there's always an iconic shot associated with the winner at this golf course. And the messed up part is that somebody else that day also tried that shot and it blew up in their face. And the point is crowning the person who pulls it off. And that's what I was like, dude, that's so well said. It's exactly how I feel about this tournament is. And not to, I don't know, not to duct tape to seemingly unrelated points together. But I think it's very interesting in relation to Ridley's comments about the rollback too, right? Is that you can't, I don't think listen to anything he set in there and not be like,
Starting point is 00:24:25 you know, this is the kind of golf that I and the club is trying to promote here, right? Like I don't think, I don't take anything away from those comments and be like, ah, we actually are trying to set it up for TV ratings and birdies and to, you know, really appease the casual fan, which then actually kind of
Starting point is 00:24:41 brings in a whole other conversation about where the master's going, but get there, yeah. Yeah, maybe we can talk about that later. Anyways, what are we talking about? What day is this? Who are we talking about? Shop value, baby? So on Thursday, like there was, like, there there were what, nine or ten guys that shot 80 or above this week? And I like the fact that Randy's just shot,
Starting point is 00:25:00 just kicking up dirt, this stable right now. And I think that that there's still ebbs and flows that are going to be had. It's just the line just moves a little bit closer to par or birdie being a good score. And like, like, I think three was a great example today. Oh, so good. Like there were guys that were, that were, I mean, Tommy was 20 feet short of the green. and the best he could do with a chip was to put it to like 25 feet.
Starting point is 00:25:28 And they just put right down that ski slope. Yeah. And then if that putt doesn't go in, he's probably off the green and he's struggling to make, make bogey. Rom three putted from that same spot. That was one of his many, many, many, many, many, many three puts today.
Starting point is 00:25:44 Yeah, three, three was so awesome. It's just, I, Lowry three putted two from like three feet. No, that was four. The pin on four was kick ass as well. in that back, right, with just like a little bit of, just a little bit of shelf behind it.
Starting point is 00:25:58 So, like, if you do want to go right at it, maybe you'll get a little bit of help. But God, if you go over the green there, you were going to get eviscerated. So many guys in that front bunker trying to go there. The guys who are playing safe have like a 50 footer, like straight up that, that slope. There's, there were so many three and four buds there. I think nine, nine was like, I was furious when Ludwig went long of nine. I'm like, okay, cool. like your your bone back there 10 looked so hard today six was so hard on that back shelf
Starting point is 00:26:28 but they've redone that green I forget what year they did that where it no longer kind of funnels back there it is like we watched some like ludwig birded six and that's he got birded that to go to three under like hit it in a spot we I watched a ton of groups come through six so nobody else hit it anywhere near the spot love it did because if you hit it five feet short of where he did it rolled all the way back to the front left and if you got greedy like scotty hit an awesome shot to the back shelf that it felt like should have held and it didn't like it skipped over the green into a totally fine spot to get up and down from and then like you watch j t on that shot he kind of fan went a little bit right and it came up short catches the front of that mountain and it rolls all
Starting point is 00:27:05 the way back down the hill and he's got to hit a shot that you just don't i feel like you don't see as much in week to week golf of like the 54 degree pitch shot that has to have some spin but skip through the first mounting that you get that you're going to encounter because of how steep and severe the mounds are there and you can't fly stuff to the upper shelf and just like dude it's a complete examination of golf and i i'm surprised to hear that uh you know they kind of i want to see more birdies out of it because at one point today i'm like dude it is out there for the getting reeds five under on the front like birdies and eagles were flying when the when the afternoon wave teed off like scotty eagles too and and the ludwig got out to the hot start it just felt like it was
Starting point is 00:27:45 possible it was very possible if you hit the shots it was possible out there sure um it was it was i don't no man i don't know how you could set up a thursday much better honestly don't like you can't lose the course then but it was it was it wasn't on the edge either it was just like dude play some good golf you're going to be rewarding and when you mess up we'll be waiting for you it seems volatile like yes best way of it's there's more downside risk um i mean like watching aldrich pocketer like i watched every shot of his round on the app it was spectacular like it is it is a b s i you know identifier yeah extremely exposer out there today where like you like you get those those firm conditions there's no friction
Starting point is 00:28:25 and it's yeah it's great and it just puts so much stress on your chipping if you're not playing well or your bunker play as we saw it from bryson on 11 it was uh it was a very good day it's very good day uh guys if you want to have a good day uh maybe go check out the all new high noon day pack uh this new variety eight pack would be available years soon be available year round is a year round? I'm sorry. I don't know which one of those. Cody is it available year round? Cody's telling me it's available year round to keep the sun shining
Starting point is 00:28:58 and the good times, rolling crafted with real vodka and real juice. The high noon day pack brings together pear, cranberry, tangerine and peach. Those are like, those are a gust of colors. A gust of flavors right there. Cranberry, tangrene and peach
Starting point is 00:29:14 and pair. The perfect combo of light, bright, delicious flavors for a blue sky day. Visit high noon spirits.com to find a pack near you high noon suns up. Where should we go next, guys? Do we, T.C., do we want to... Oh, your, your words, not mine. Yeah, T.C., I would love to talk speed.
Starting point is 00:29:38 I'm still buzzing from that par save on... Immense. Fucking immense part. God, that was awesome, man. That was awesome. He drives it left under the Magnolia tree, kind of a half little... flinch to get it back out of the fairway. It gets it up and down for probably what,
Starting point is 00:29:54 160, 170. I mean, it was just awesome stuff. Listen, I know a lot of people will have only seen a couple of the blowups, the 15, the thing on 15, the thing on 18. Speed played really good golf today. I watched all of it. I was locked into every shot. He played super duper
Starting point is 00:30:12 solid. Did exactly what he needed to do on the front nine. Birdie's two, birdies eight, seven, you know, like both seven and 14 where he made bogeys. he's just a hair off the fairway like it was he leaked him a little bit right kind of got blocked out in a weird way and you know just ended up making bogeys
Starting point is 00:30:28 which nobody's going bogey free out there on that stuff the one of 15's bad the drive of it yeah that's bad but even he said after the round too he's like man if you give me a dozen a dozen balls from there like I'm probably making bogey on one I'm probably making par on one and I'm probably making birdie on the other 10 like that was just a weird
Starting point is 00:30:45 kind of fluky thing and then to save par on 18 was like those are the ones that have turned into doubles and triples and like memes in the past. And so I'm just, I'm, I'm buzzing. I thought 72 is, would have loved to be under par, but I will, I will take it considering how those last kind of four or five holes went. Love seeing the birdie on nine, like great wedge in there off of, you know, downhill lie, just proper distance control.
Starting point is 00:31:13 Yeah, like you said, I know he's only even. And you're, and you guys, you know, we're going to glaze speech. And then we're going to, we're going to, we're going to roast Ludwig for, for shooting 74. But, um, but no, I, I think speed, it felt more like a minus two round. It did. It was a good, good round of golf. Man. Dolly, what's the, is the, is the, you're going to push back based on numbers?
Starting point is 00:31:37 Yeah, he just didn't drive it very good. He did drive it. Did you watch it? Are you going off the, the red and green boxes? I'm looking at the red and green boxes and I saw a fair amount of it as well. It just go watch them all. He drove it solid. He drove it solid. He had a little bit of a leak to the right on a couple holes, but it was better than,
Starting point is 00:31:54 better than numbers are going to say. Just, yeah, I've watched them on 14. That was tough. It kind of made it, made a mess of that one, made bogey over there driving in the right trees. Just a fairway behind the tree. Just now saw the putt on 15, which that was that. We don't, we don't want that. It, Jordan in the modern day golf just does see.
Starting point is 00:32:16 it feels very different watching him, not just in his own ability, but the way the game has evolved in the last 10 years and how he, the skills of their reward a little bit different. And we've seen Rory go, like, Rory was like around Speed's speed 10 years ago, speed's current speed. And Rory just went like nuclear with speed. And a lot of guys have gone nuclear with speed.
Starting point is 00:32:39 And now he feels like Jordan is fighting with half of a hand behind his back. Like it just feels like, Well, he's been broken for 10 years. It's underword. It is. But it just, I don't know, man. I just don't, I want, I don't see the magic. There was so much magic even in normal rounds that he played.
Starting point is 00:32:58 Even in my rational magic. Yes, it just always, like something happened. And it was just, does you happen to watch on 18? Do you happen to see a shot on 10? Great part. Sure. Yeah. I saw that the shot on 10 was the best shot I saw.
Starting point is 00:33:11 It was amazing. Yeah. But in 2015 or 16, he, he makes that put, you know? Like that was the magic of Speed and it just feels like... I don't know. I test adjacent to me, but...
Starting point is 00:33:23 Yes, I did. This is I test. This is 100% I test. It feels like T-17 is, you know, it's a long tournament. It's a very long tournament. Maybe we do see some magic here over the next couple of days ahead of Sunday.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Listen, did I put my, my head on the chopping block in that Instagram post of out of 91 players who are you picking to Whid, Jordan Speef? Yes. Like, did it? Was I a little after as soon as I came out of my mouth like oh fuck man he could definitely shoot 78 tomorrow so from that perspective i thought today
Starting point is 00:33:51 was a massive dub we're still in the tournament uh and the the thing where i will agree i will agree with what you're saying is like not picking him to win the pGA not picking him to win the u.s open like i'm not picking him to win the wells fargo the what is it the true yeah i'm not i'm not I'm picking him to win at Augusta National very specifically, and shots like a lot of what we saw today are why. And I feel like the tougher it gets, like the more, the more the firmer and faster and bouncier it gets,
Starting point is 00:34:23 the more I feel like that should reward his skill set and some of the shit that he does well, right? If he can keep it in the fairway, if he can keep it in play and allow his iron play to like put him in the right spots and not put him in the death spots that are hanging out. I do not know how to say this. and this won't make sense as I get it out of my mouth. But I feel like the spieth Augusta makes sense
Starting point is 00:34:46 when the greens are a little bit more neutered than they currently are. Like when you see the green, a little bit more green grass on those greens, I feel like he puts them extremely well. When they get glassy, when it gets like touchy putts like we saw on 15, I feel like it neuters a little bit of his advantage of being able to make mid-range puts. Like the mid-range putts become more defensive, the more glassy it gets out there.
Starting point is 00:35:08 And if you go back and watch 15 and 16, the dude poured them in from that range and the greens just look different and the speed that their hit is different and that's that that is the run in 2018 that's the run he can go on to make it super exciting and I don't know if that's the golf course we're going to get over the next several days.
Starting point is 00:35:25 It does make sense. I do get what you're saying. He's going to get an inordinate amount of his advantage from making those mid-range puts and as soon as everybody stops making those then yeah, I get what you're saying. It's just like basketball, you know, The mid-range game just isn't.
Starting point is 00:35:41 Is it a disappearing? A question for you on the agronomy. Like is it with the temps being as warm as they have been over the last, say, four weeks? Are you seeing more Bermuda poking through, especially like around the collars? Because that's what it looks like that on TV a little bit.
Starting point is 00:36:03 It just looks like the collars are kind of not fuzzy, but just a little bit in between the Rye and the Bermuda. and they're kind of, you know, just a little stickier. I haven't seen it as much around the greens. You don't get that close to a lot of spots, but you definitely see it like if you look left of 12T, like on the mound there, it's like, well, that is a huge patch of Bermuda that has come in there.
Starting point is 00:36:25 Like it looks, you can see it on the TV shot very easily. Yeah. Definitely in the gallery in a lot of spots. It gets a little bit more worn down of like the rise definitely killed off in some spots. And I mean, it's going to get up in the mid 80s this weekend. Like that, as is something to keep an eye on.
Starting point is 00:36:39 I'll make a mental note to look out for more examples of that. I definitely feel like I saw more guys putting from around the greens this year than we're used to seeing. I feel like it is usually a pretty quick like reach for wedge. And like Scotty, when he went long of six today, he pulled putter out. P long of two today, hold it with putter from long of that green. That's usually, you know, we're seeing some of it as good of a short game as him chipping that one. So I'll keep a little closer eye on that tomorrow, but definitely something to monitor. Yeah, because I think like as that as that grass starts poking through more, it's going to make it more and more difficult to chip.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Like you're seeing it a lot on those banks on 14 and 17. Like you just see three or four feet off the, you know, off the green, especially when when it's angled towards like the afternoon sun. I also felt like the color grading was just weird today on on Amazon especially. But even on the ESPN broadcast, it just felt like more grayed. out or more, it was almost like they had ND filters on it or something. Or not had ND filters on it. I kind of think that it's almost like, it's probably two things. One, like there's more coverage in the middle of the afternoon, which we don't usually see.
Starting point is 00:37:50 Yeah. And two, I mean, I think that's got to be part of like the greens too, right? It's like the firmness of the greens. They're just going to be shinier. Shiner. And even the trees and like when you see the drone shots and everything, it just looks more. So flat.
Starting point is 00:38:04 Yeah, just just more. Yeah, just a deader. color. Speaking of dead, why don't we talk about Bryson and ROM, should we? I don't know how to, you know, apologies to all the haters and losers, but I don't know how to do anything other than
Starting point is 00:38:19 to group these two together in a little bit of this. We can obviously tackle them individually, but Bryson 76, ROM 78, two of the absolute, two of the top five, certainly tournament favorites, looking wildly
Starting point is 00:38:35 uncompetitive today. Bryson, A Delta collab there on the second hole. Just an absolute sniper into the left side. Made a mess there. But other than that, played pretty solid golf, like other than almost killing somebody at six, played pretty solid golf on the front and then took three shots to get out of the green side bunker on 11.
Starting point is 00:39:00 I, yeah, Sawley, I think you were there for some of this. Why don't you take it away from there? Do you want me to speak? I believe it's reporting from on the ground. Is that what you were referring to? Yeah, actually, you're right. We did. We did.
Starting point is 00:39:13 That's apologies to you, but we got to go right to the source on this one. Okay. Reporting to you live from Amen Cornerhead, Augustine National, where we saw not one, not two, but three explosions in the desert from Bryson. On this way to a disastrous triple bogey seventh on the 11th. All this distraction makes you wonder what is in those files. He looked like Hollywood moteling in there. sorry bini this one will make sense here in a few weeks when you see the gasparilla video cheers just all kinds of drive-by there
Starting point is 00:39:48 it truly looked like he was he just forgot how to hit a bunker shot it's so funny so far back on 11 that and it was so bright out to your point on like the kind of weird colors of it like he hits the shot and none of us in the gallery realized that it doesn't get out like you see the sand explosion you're waiting for the ball to show up so it was like a delayed reaction every time he did it of like of the grown and then it just the murmuring just kept going he left it in again he left it in again and it was weird how bryson has this kind of great momentum going but as soon as it started going wrong for bryson even the augusta crowd was kind of starting to turn on him a little bit and there was like a murmur and excitement around the fact that he couldn't get out of the bunker
Starting point is 00:40:27 on his way to on his way to seven but he held it together really well in his uh quick quotes afterwards as well a little little spicy man he's asking he's kind of starting to see this content game cut both ways. Oh, you want to 3D print your iron? It's cool. We're going to ask you about that after your 76. Do you think you could print a new set by this weekend? She's like, what the fuck are we talking about, man? This is an artist rendering here that Cody's throwing out screen. Yeah, I don't even know what to.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Genuinely peeved that you had to get the USGA to, to like approve your equipment. I think he was generally peeved at the question, which was definitely a dumb question. And he was peeped in manufacturing. as well. It's true. Just kept hooking the ball. It uh, okay. As we watch another just absolute clunker with the irons here and granted
Starting point is 00:41:18 I know everything I said on the way in. I know that I drafted him in our in our fancy draft which uh, we might have, we might not have time to get to those results today. We'll see. I got them if you want. Nah, we might not have not, not have time to get to. Uh, I was texting a buddy today and it's just
Starting point is 00:41:34 it's funny to think about like other sports and, you know, TC, you guys talk about this on the great ballmowers podcast. How quickly schemes turn over in the NFL? Everybody's looking at like, if anyone gets a competitive advantage, how do I steal that? How do I integrate that? How do I do this? It's like, man, we're like 10 years into this.
Starting point is 00:41:51 If nobody else is using a single length of it. That's crazy to me. And I'm not saying I'm smarter. I'm not saying I'm anything. But I'm like, man, there's a lot of smart people that seems like they would have, it would have implemented this if it was the way to go. But it's just, it's just wild. every time it's rinse and repeat man we've seen this a bunch of times i don't know if it's the
Starting point is 00:42:10 course that's in his head the uneven lies the i don't know i don't know what the hell is going on but it it is very very weird with bryson i think you can make the case quite easily that he's been extremely successful uh in his career this new age uh with the single length length irons and on a lot of golf courses and a lot of different styles of play totally uh but not here that's that was and i know he's got a good couple finishes the last couple years but It's been good driving, which is almost always going to happen from him and really good putting. He's excellent putter, excellent green reader. But he's not great around the greens with the single length irons,
Starting point is 00:42:46 and he's not great off uneven lies and the difficult shots that Augustine National has required. Even in these good finishes, it's not been good in those categories. So there's just no wiggle room in any other parts of his game. And when that goes, hey, why, when he has one explosion there on 11, like he's kind of toast, man. It's night night. And three explosions. Yeah, three. three
Starting point is 00:43:06 explosions there but it yeah it was a lot of Bryson momentum going into this one and I just I don't know
Starting point is 00:43:16 I don't want to celebrate it's more interesting when Bryson's around like it's not but it's also quite fun what he is peeved and being short with people after around
Starting point is 00:43:28 and we can all see yeah it's just all a facade yeah I don't know I mean like like we said it's been two really really really good years here albeit not great with the irons but maybe he'll bounce back and play
Starting point is 00:43:39 his way back into some sort of contention if the golf course gets hard who knows you can move up with a good round but uh yeah just a weird one and a bit of a shame on me for not uh i don't know for buying all the hype i'll i'll tc i apologize uh i think the i think it'll be really interesting tomorrow like once we get through tomorrow to see like the wave split between the two like if it evens out or if or if the It was morning afternoon today. It was about two-tenths of a shot difference today from what I saw. That said, it also seems like, I was talking to Randy about this earlier.
Starting point is 00:44:15 It seems like there's, like, we were talking about how many, not like, relatively bad players there are in this field between some of the past champs. Some loose ball strike had gone on. The amateurs and some of the national open winners can be a little gimmick you. But I think that's additive in a feature, not a bug. because it's truly like it truly gives you a sense of like holy shit this like it's really hard to pull these shots off even in an easier year um versus and and they're all like colorful characters that you kind of get to know year after year after year versus random anonymous club pro in the pGA championship or yeah that's what i totally agree and then you get a hose amriola thobble who's like yeah i mean one of the rounds of the day today i think i was should have gotten penalized on two for knocking a couple leaves off that tree.
Starting point is 00:45:10 But just like, I see a short game work we've ever seen. He did perish on the 15th hole during the 14, 15th, during the 14, 15, 16 stream, unfortunately. He went bogey double bogey on those three holes. But yeah, he had it to two under through 13, which is kind of unheard of for the great man, Jose. A logo was sweating that one.
Starting point is 00:45:35 The bolluga was sweating out when he had called him out. He was right now. I had the pock eater. The pock eater thing. We're going to, we'll get to the beluga momentarily. But TCO, we got to talk ROM before we get there because this is one of the bigger, man, this is one of the bigger eggs. I feel like I can remember. I mean, this is up there with some of the stuff Rory did and, you know, the silly stuff.
Starting point is 00:46:00 Rory's done in round one and, oh, my God, all the hype's on Rory. and he just completely shoots his way out of it. I mean, yeah, Rom, ROM shot 78 today. Rom's supposed to be the dude. Rom's supposed to be with no birdies. And it was just really a weird round of golf. I mean, he bogied one from the middle of the fairway.
Starting point is 00:46:19 He had a clean midiron into two, didn't make birdie, but three putted three, three putted six, I think. Three putted nine. 13. He hit like a horrible snipe into the azaleas. barely like got through the trees, I think got lucky that his T-shot didn't get hung up and then just flipped one into the azaleas, made double on 13. Yeah, just a just a really big clunker from one of the absolute favorites.
Starting point is 00:46:48 I mean, it was, this sucks, man. Like this is one, the Bryson stuff, you know, that's, there's a lot of, there's a lot to the Bryson circus. And I think when he plays bad, there's a little bit of like, oh, that's interesting. When Ron plays bad, I'm like, well, that sucks. Like it would be really fun if it was Scotty and Rory and Rom. You know, it's like a waste.
Starting point is 00:47:09 It feels like a waste. It feels like a huge waste. Yeah. The whole live thing is a massive waste of his talent. Like again, at least Bryson went over there and reinvented himself and has like, like legitimately seems like he's found happiness over there. And a curated,
Starting point is 00:47:23 you know, less of an intrusive media environment has been great for him. And freedom to do the YouTube stuff has been great for him. Like there's a happy story in some way on. the Bryson front and the ROM thing is just like, dude, even when he wins over there, everybody's kind of like, okay, you're supposed to. That just feels or nothing like this. Don't get on that.
Starting point is 00:47:40 He foot hoop. But like, dude, you're a two-time major winner. Like, you're still young. You're still in the prime of your career. Like, hey, don't. Hey, like a easy narrative. If you go to live, it's like, I don't know if this is going to prepare you that well to play in the majors.
Starting point is 00:47:54 And two years of tough results have felt like it fit into that narrative really, really well. And then to come out and it's kind of, I, at some point I expect that. I still do expect that trend to reverse. Like, Rahm has not lost his talent. He is, uh,
Starting point is 00:48:09 I still think an extremely, extremely good player. I do not think he's done winning majors, but the, and I, I think at some point he will be back probably on the PGA tour, playing golf competitively in a more competitive environment on a week to week basis. But it is just such a bummer to like watch this talent go to waste on a tour that is not
Starting point is 00:48:27 nearly as competitive as a PJ tour and throw up stinkers in majors. Like it's, it's, it's, he's just kind of like increasingly irrelevant in the golf world despite being one of at minimum the five best golfers in the world like probably best three golfers in the world and just being completely irrelevant for like 99% of it annually is just a massive bummer. Is he a dude? Is he still a dude?
Starting point is 00:48:53 I think so my thing with the dudes is once I put you in as a dude I can't touch it for a year. Like it's a year-long commitment. When did you do this? It feels like, I mean, what's the role in 50-year? It felt like you tried to explain it away the last few times we talked about it. And it's like, no, man, like, this is a trend. And like, I don't care what the data golf stuff says. Like, he's no-showing here.
Starting point is 00:49:19 And he's only won three times and three years on live. That's crazy. Which is crazy to me. Like, and I get that like winning can be tricky or volatile at times or luck-based. but at some point, like, winning is winning. And you guys have held Tommy to that standard. And, you know, we've talked about it with Ludwig and all that. But like, like, it can't go both ways then, right?
Starting point is 00:49:43 Like, winning is winning. And he hasn't done a whole lot of it. I don't, I don't think anyone's explaining away the major record. I think it's just like, again, I will say this. He's going to throw up a stinker this week. I think it's still like, I don't think he's going to go another year without a top 10 in a major. I think he will have a top 10 in a major.
Starting point is 00:50:00 I think he will have a top 10 in a major this year, right? I don't think he's like toast in majors going forward. But it is, this has gone on long enough that it deserves attention, should get attention. I ran to Brandel and Rich Lerner in the media center. They were on their way to go and do live from. I kind of want to wrap this show up because I think Brandl's going to live voice here tonight from what I gathered there. Like it's a story. It's definitely a story.
Starting point is 00:50:20 Like, again, it can be convenient to be like, hey, is this the best master's preparation for you guys to be jaunton all over Asia and then going to South Africa and then taking a bunch of a time off leading up to it or is it better to have been state side and played the week before? Like, you know, some of the past masters when they were, I think they were, what, in Florida, several years ago, maybe in their first full year right before the masters and a bunch of guys had a success in that one. Like there's a complete vacation of live guys on the leader, but they released in the zip, you know, playing competitive golf in the same area code. And you've made it easy to kind of poke a hole in this one, unfortunately.
Starting point is 00:50:58 And again, it's not fun. Like I I I the I the for me as I've said over over the years like the PJ tour versus live thing I I just put that on pause during the major weeks like I still appreciate the talent of a lot of these guys and want them to be competitive. It just becomes a sad and uninteresting story if they're not going to be competitive in majors like what's happened with cam smith is a sad is a bad story like for golf it's not been fun. Dustin Johnson has been completely irrelevant since he left not good we can't afford to have rom go that way like golf doesn't have enough dudes to survive that. So listen, the dude commitment, I got to ride this out. Like every time he fucks up, you guys got to let me hear it. And you will, I'm sure over the court. I'll believe me, you will.
Starting point is 00:51:37 But that's a commitment. Like I still, like, it was a big deal to put that kind of honor on somebody to say, like, you are one of the dudes of this era. And I still truly believe that. But it's going to take a year of bad golf for me to take somebody out of it. Because I, again, I'm a massive believer in his talent. And it's just, this is hard to watch. And so, like he had two top tens and majors.
Starting point is 00:51:58 last year. They just weren't really competitive. Yeah, it's one of those things. Like, I don't know, I just think that like there's stuff that goes beyond the data, right? There's, there's just like with Rory at the Masters. Like you say the data that the data is just the scores though, right? Like, I know, but the scores, yeah, but the scores like tournament to tournament or within the context of a tournament tell a story. And then when, when they just get washed into one giant sample size, it's like, oh, here's his trend over the last year or two. I think that that nullifies or mitigates some subjective stuff in there. But it's not just a year or two.
Starting point is 00:52:37 It's like his entire career. He's just been a the buoy. He's been a steady, extremely really extremely good performer and beating a lot of the dudes he teased it up with on a weekly basis. Like it even if that doesn't mean wins directly. And again, it's really hard to judge the success on live. But like he's still, you know, the odds maker still respect him as one of the top players in the field.
Starting point is 00:52:57 and I'll still, I don't know, I don't think this is like going to complete, like, does this eliminate him in your guys' mind of the possibility that he wins the PGA at O'Ronimic here in a couple weeks? Like, it doesn't for me. Like, I think it could very easily still happen. He could snap out of this at any moment. Yeah, I think he's, listen, I don't think he's washed. But I just, yeah, there's something going on there. There is. There is.
Starting point is 00:53:18 And beyond the Gulf. Speaking of washed, I washed this thing down. The, this is the H&B Sullivan. Good stuff. I think this is Heather to Harbor. We've got the spring color palette Holderness and Bourne. And Benny Booms was out there in it this week. Mason Howell wearing it as well.
Starting point is 00:53:39 Just some of the best pop colors. They've got those button-down shirts that swing-knit collection as well. Kind of wear those off the course. I've been deep into the short in pants game. There lately they've got a new, the Harwood short in Ivy. has been my go-to here of late. Just an awesome green color. They've got another cascade green color as well.
Starting point is 00:54:03 It's that time of the year where you want to re-up your pants, your shorts, kind of freshen up the closet a little bit. Let's see what else we got. We've got the Saunders short as well. That's their foray into kind of the ath leisure wear. Yeah. Really comfy. That's kind of my driving short way.
Starting point is 00:54:26 when I'm on a road trip these days. And then, you know, all the, all the polos, all the, I personally love the solids, the McDonald polo and the solid. I like the, the, the, uh, the, uh, the, uh, the, okay knit. But, uh, you've got all the, all the print polos, all the striped polos these days. They've got the, uh, the airation technology, micro perforations, macro comfort. You know, Randy's big fan of that. So, uh, listen, the line keeps getting wider and wider for them, but I think it's,
Starting point is 00:54:56 stays true to what they're good at, which is like classic, timeless style and design. So they've got the U.S. Open Collection live online as well. And NLU 10 for 10% off at HBGolf.com. That along with our, that's pretty much the only one on the market from a, from a promo code perspective. So go stock up. The spring stuff is killer this year. Love the palette.
Starting point is 00:55:24 Shout out to Holderness and Boren our good friends there. TC, we were talking about dudes before that ad read. Why don't we bring in one of our dudes? Neil was out on the course all day today. Icarito, how we doing, my man? Ola, Toros. How are you? Doing great.
Starting point is 00:55:41 God, fantastic. Beard, I just heard TCS driving shorts. What did I miss, gentlemen? Sheesh. We were just talking about the boo. You got any lasting thoughts on John Rom before we get to your day? What, just grumpy, you know, walking off 15. greed did not a not a happy camper dege okay doesn't doesn't seem like he's showing a lot of gratitude
Starting point is 00:56:04 out there today feeling it it's hard to describe how bad the shot was on 13 the second shot eight iron and up into the azaleas from a flat lie i have no idea is he going to kill somebody tomorrow like is he at risk of of lashing i don't know uh so i so i ran in the car from uh the enterprise down in like downtown august there was a rage room next door You know, we can just go break stuff. I might have to pass along the info to ROM and Bobby Mac. I was going to go get it out of them, man. Like, they both seem very angry in my, as I was catching up here before hopping on.
Starting point is 00:56:38 For sure. What did you do today, Neil? What did you get into? Oh, man. You know, the fish weren't really biting today for me, Dee. Sometimes you get out there. I feel like everyone else was just, just slated. I feel like I miss.
Starting point is 00:56:49 I'm like, man, I just got to play it. I got played. I had a great day. Don't get me wrong. I started the day. Went out. I wanted to watch Rory and Mason Howe. And it was just really scrapy.
Starting point is 00:57:00 The boys were all over the yard. I've got to let Randy know that Mason, how was doing the jitterbug out there. First master's jitters were tough. He squirley off the first. Lost off the hat on the first team. Yeah, right off the second. He and Rory were in the trees.
Starting point is 00:57:14 Had to move a TV truck to, so those guys could punch out. And so I followed those guys, you know, kind of often. Then I post up above three green and it's 14. Just because I was reading your notes of today. Did you leave on seven? Yes. I watched him hit his drive on eight.
Starting point is 00:57:30 I was like, okay. That he's fucked over there. I'm going to get out of here. I'm going to go get some lunch, man. This is just kind of boring. But the pin on three, and they moved the tee up on four. Have you guys talked about that? We have.
Starting point is 00:57:42 Oh, fantastic. Okay, I was wondering that. I was like, I thought guys were going to, I was like, it made it such a better hole. It was my favorite thing of the day. Like, because you can stand up there. That's one of the best places to watch golf. You're above three green.
Starting point is 00:57:55 And you can watch them hit that gnarly trip from below the score, right under the scoreboard, watch Rory chip up and then bad three putt there. And then you have this awesome elevated view of all the action on four. Normally that T is right next to you. And so you kind of like, you know, looking around people, you can't really get the, it's one of the few spots where you can see two holes of action out there, you know, in a big way. And I just feel like, man, I'd love to see you move that T up more.
Starting point is 00:58:22 But they put that pin up top right. nobody was getting it close. I probably saw eight shots in there. And guys were struggling. So highlight of the day, it's kind of dark, but I, guys, it was just a ghastly sight. I saw a simultaneous four putt. Mason Howe four putts the fourth green.
Starting point is 00:58:40 And five seconds later, Victor Hovlin, four puts the third green. It's like, I can see a triple play. I was like, oh my God, did anybody else see that? Like, am I the only one that saw that? Like, this is historic shit, people. It was epic. And, you know, the fourth green is pretty far away.
Starting point is 00:58:54 But it was, it was, it was just a tough stretch of golf there. So both those pins were difficult. So I think what happened to me. Hovlin, by the way, had a worst putting day of anybody in the field today. I think, I think, it may have, may have been where he stacked up some of those. That's, it was tough. You know, and kind of, you know, we're used to this with Hovham, but tough shirt. Walking to the 4T, I, you know, he just didn't, he didn't look super happy.
Starting point is 00:59:17 There were a few tough shirts out there. Bob, Bob was one of the top shirts. Bridgman. Bridgman. today was maybe the worst I've ever seen. Yeah, TC, I saw you call that out. It was as bad in person as it was on TV. Blowby's and Kenny Wayne Shepard combo.
Starting point is 00:59:34 I mean, that's a co-lab no one was looking for. I am getting word, Deeds. Mateo Polcini had the worst putting in the field. Oh, is that right? Four horse in the field. Maybe I took that a little too early. I got to see Polcini up close and personal. What a hoss that man is.
Starting point is 00:59:48 A big Pulcini. Sizable lad there. Yeah. Burti the first. You never want to Bertie the first. I kind of, I was trying to pace myself today. It's going to be a long week. So I'm going to my spots, you know, above three and pins are hard. The Lugus Honeyholes. Yeah, honey holes for me. Usually, usually we're,
Starting point is 01:00:02 the fish are biting in these places, right? But we're seeing some gnarly things, right? So then I go over and I sit on 16 in the bleachers next to the tea. I move over. I got a great, great vantage point. And it's just really hard golf. I mean, it was, it's both awesome to see. I think I saw seven or eight chips from behind 15. And it might be the only test. like that maybe should be the playoff in the future just take them to the back of 15 green nobody I don't think anybody I saw got it up and down I didn't see Patrick Reed but it looks like he hit the best shot of the day
Starting point is 01:00:36 it was incredible he did not get it up and down but he was hit a drop by the water and hit an unbelievable shot I mean all these guys are pretty much laying up right right on the fringe there Hatton's freaking out because he didn't get it up there Michael Kim uh Rasmus Hoyard hit a pretty good one there and then Pulcini got got bodied pretty good one there and then Pulcini got body pretty bad. But the pin on 15 and then they put it up Sunday pin from last year on 16. And it was up towards the front. The back pin was Sunday last year. It was closer to the front this
Starting point is 01:01:04 year on 16th. But that same was top right shelf was was tough. Nobody was getting at that. And so there was a tough two putt from from yes. From down the hill to the left. And so I'm enjoying this, but it does it does damper the patrons. You know, there's just not not a lot of, you know, we need a little action in here, you know, like it feels beautiful day, not a lot of action. So, T.C., I want to shout out the great man. Best shot I saw was Rose's approach into 15. Just professional shit. Really, really professional stuff.
Starting point is 01:01:32 Just a classy two putt. And Dege, on the flip side, just disgraceful stuff from Speeth on 15th. Awful. I mean, like, I'm watching the leaderboard. I'm so amped to see. Oh, my God, Spee's in the midst. You guys need to be. I thought you guys were filled in the bunkers, which is a good spot.
Starting point is 01:01:49 And he just hits, like just such an average. It was so. Horrible. mediocre. All of it was just mediocre. Up and out of the put, the second put, even before, basically before he hit, hit the ball. It was bad. It was bad. I did like him playing into that bunker. It seemed like he was maybe between clubs. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:02:05 And I thought that was a good play. I was like, there's no way we're not getting this up and down. And I got robbed of a good rake job by, by Greller, because a Kepka's guy raked it, you know, so it's just kind of bad all around for me. You know, I'm waiting all day to see something like that. Well, this is what happens at Augustus sometimes. You get behind the eight ball. You start pressing and you just kind of you just get suffocated. And great. You can't do anything about it. Fun day regardless, but that's what makes the good days count, D.
Starting point is 01:02:29 You know, you can't fish aren't biting all the time. It's still a good day on the boat, right? Still a good day on the boat. You know, it was still a very nice day out there. But I just felt like, man, I am off schedule here. I am not aligned with the action. What I've come from being in person, when you do get off, you can't catch back up. Like, if you could get on a good group and,
Starting point is 01:02:51 follow and be like, oh my God, I was with this morning. It was great. In the afternoon, I couldn't, couldn't, there's not enough like time to catch back or like to stay with somebody and see something long enough. And as soon as you leave, you get the Rory situation. I'm just beating myself up. I haven't seen Bryson's name on a leaderboard. I'm like, oh, big golf
Starting point is 01:03:07 place stinks. You know, I basically like every time you bet on the under, you feel this way. Like, why do I do that? Yeah, there was some some, I did want to ask you about that. I'm just getting a report here that we do have another on the ground reporting moment from this. Beluga, of course, picked Bryson with the number one spot in the big board.
Starting point is 01:03:24 I think Scoops maybe had some stuff on the big board as well. The press center here to Gustavon National continues to evolve and grow every single year. A rivalry has emerged between Scoop Solomon and one Spiel Schuster. I can report from the grounds, though, that a Spiel Schuster was seen flabbergasted, mustard, up in arms over the start of the one, Jose Maria Olifabble, I believe, second to laugh on something called the Belucus Big Board. Two under par here on the front line, and it is the buzz of the buzz of the first. the ground how far off the beluga's big board is so far keeping on the situation but we'll walk back on later yeah you're ultimately vindicated he did he did wreck his gray back to earth i i
Starting point is 01:04:01 i would yeah i actually got sidetracked i was going to spiel the real deal was going to come come through or something uh but wouldn't say you got vindicated he beat brice no kiddie i'm harpooning the beluga right now just you just painting the board red with the beluga's blood you know tough tough jason day is making me look stupid up there But I do want, guys, come on, you got to give me a shout on Pot Geater. You took the word down by myself. Full apology. Full apology.
Starting point is 01:04:28 That was, I was like, Neil, what are you doing? This guy's, we had that one. Better form. You're smart. I'm dumb. Great stuff. Great stuff. And was the, was the formatting like a bit yesterday?
Starting point is 01:04:41 I caught a little bit of it and just, there was bold. There was different sizes. And then John Rom, he's spelled his name wrong. It's a lot of copy of pasting TC. working off of PDFs, you know, and so I'm trying to get into my, into my model, you know, so data cleansing is a problem for the beluga. And so, yeah, you know, I, I would say I was trying to get the, I was trying to get the list done. So I wasn't really worried about typos and, formatting. I got to be honest, I didn't know if Cody was going to just, you know, copy and
Starting point is 01:05:12 paste him over into the graphics, but I'm glad he did because that's good stuff. But yeah, you know, that's not, that's not really part of the models. Typos are, that's, you know, par for the course. over here. You know what? We're going to do this later, but I actually want to bring him in now. Randy, can we bring you in here? Because I know you had kind of one singular question for the beluga, just all day that was out of your mind. Oh my God. This is horrible. What is it? Welcome big. First time jitters. Oh, thank you. Sorry. I was so cut up in the show. Neil, who suffered the worst first time master's jitters? Because that was all.
Starting point is 01:05:50 all over beluga's big war for sure have to know who is the worst of it well i mean i i'd say you know firsthand impression would be mason how but i was proud of him for birdie in 15 and 16 and you know getting in at plus four it's respectful still in the hunt for the low am but as i said earlier he was doing the jitterbug randy you know kind of forgot the steps stumbling all over the dance floor uh not not great stuff for the 18 year old the uh the thomasville spino um you know our guy, the basketball player, Holtz, it seems like he had some jitters going. Sure. I mean, just check the leaderboard, man.
Starting point is 01:06:25 I, I would say I was pretty impressed with Novak. He hit some good shots into 15 and 16. So it could have been wrong about the jitters with him. I'm not sure where he finished, but he kind of passed my eye test. Plus three. So, yeah, I mean, just hard, yeah, hard proper test out there, Mr. Big, which I know, I know you love. Yes. I, fantastic day.
Starting point is 01:06:50 where I said it might not have been as much energy on the ground, Neil and Sully, but I found it a great watch today. It's a long term. Yeah, give me a little more big. What did you like? What were your big takeaways here? Well, we got a hell of a leaderboard developing.
Starting point is 01:07:07 I think that's, I think that's number one. We had talked about Spieth. If Spieth were to redeem himself 10 years after the debacle, that was kind of our fairy tale number one. one storyline. I don't know if we, we should have been over on this one, but guys, we might have Rory and Scotty Sunday at Augusta under some of the best course conditions possible. That's in play after one day. And I think that's, obviously, Rory individually is a big story,
Starting point is 01:07:47 but with Scotty shooting a 70 looking very clean doing it. I am just, we have not had a true showdown between those two gentlemen. And I think if we get one this weekend at Augusta under these conditions, I'll be so lucky. You could just plug and play Team Rose in there for me too. I mean, sign me up for a rematch there. Like that's in play as well, Randy. And I love it.
Starting point is 01:08:14 And listen, you know, I know we sold the block party. Maybe, I don't know, was there a non-compete? Can we do a like a potluck, Dege? Because I, I just think I'm thrilled to see Rory back in the mix. I mean, I was, maybe I was the cooler. I'm glad I left them and he just started bawling out. I didn't get to see any of it. So I'm excited to experience it the rest of the week.
Starting point is 01:08:35 I, I, this is a one man, focus group of one here. You know, one man's opinion. The, you know, the block party had a, had a very specific intent and a very specific mission, which was let's get this guy back to the top. The sequels never as good. You know, you got to know when to, like, listen, do I, the only thing that's better than one Rory Master's win is two Rory's Masters wins, right? In my eyes, it would be great, rooting for him to get another one.
Starting point is 01:08:59 But it's not, it's not the same thing, you know, I think we need to, we need to reinvent. We need to kind of circle the wagon, see what, what's going on. I'm feeling a lot of the speed energy. I got to say, I thought I was going to get a lot more, you're a fucking idiot. And instead, it was a lot of people are excited, you know, that that's the thing that's going. the speech warre just a sage burn for speed
Starting point is 01:09:20 it was but the rory thing was not that was not just a master's thing that was like let's get off the the major schneide like we were doing this for every major like come on let's go so i go ahead randy who's going to start it for jordan oh shit i mean who's going to follow is kind of what i'm trying trying to get you're leading who's coming with kind of a jerry mcguire situation
Starting point is 01:09:42 but stayed with my golf in my hands here who's coming with me So it's just amazing. I reminded myself today that Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods have all won majors more recently than Jordan Speed. I think if anybody needs this collective magic, like we,
Starting point is 01:10:00 Dej, we got to throw it. I don't know if, yeah, are you going with a shindig? What, are we going to literative? Like, I'm ready to quit the job, walk out of the office and join you. Who's coming with me? Dorothy Hamill, thank you. Less clients. Less money.
Starting point is 01:10:15 That's right. That's right. T.C. signed with Bob Sugar. We know that. Rainy, should we do some, you want to do some thrills and delights? Yeah, I got a few. Some of you guys have obviously touched on, but they're still thrilling to me. I sent these over to Cody earlier. Listen, Saul, you said you can't celebrate DeCambeau playing poorly. I sure is shit can. And I thought it was fabulous. I think, it kind of struck me late in yesterday's show. like wait, where is all this Bryson stuff coming from? Because I think it crystallized that I still believe one of the core things I believe in this world is you need some artistry to win at Augusta National. And I believe that Bryson possesses zero of that.
Starting point is 01:11:03 I think his humongous wedges will always be a limiting factor here. And so to see him not only leave the ball in the bunker on 11, you know, he hit a horrible. little wedge long at 15 after a layup. Like this guy just doesn't, it doesn't work here. His whole deal, it doesn't work. No grace. Zero grace. I'm with you in that, you know, he's a content machine.
Starting point is 01:11:29 It's fun when he's around. But like hand in hand with that, part and parcel is when he has stuff like this, I'm going to love the shit out of it. So Bryson, you were an absolute thrill and delight today, big fella. Thank you very much. God, that's good stuff, big. That's a fastball blowing it by Everybody
Starting point is 01:11:48 It just caught looking at that one I feel stupid for picking him Randy That makes me feel even stupider And I appreciate that Hold me accountable big I hold myself in contempt It feels you gotta be careful with I need you on that wall
Starting point is 01:12:02 The What was I going to say? You feel stupid and you feel uncool I think is how I feel right now Because big as soon as you said that yesterday or what was that yesterday uh about you know what there's all this bryce and stuff coming i'm like come on get with the program grandpa come on he's the future big and neil i feel like you i just feel dumb and i feel uncool i just think back to that kid and 15 grandstands saturday last
Starting point is 01:12:30 year just over the balcony i love it brisette i was like that guy what are you talking about the guy sucks and now i'm drinking the kool-lid what's wrong with me man it's too much i stink all right big pitch. Were you pitching backwards here? Where are you going? Well, listen, the difficulty that the course set up the scoring conditions, that was a thrill and delight today. We registered at two on the, on the proper test index, 10 rounds in the 80s, only five in the 60s. That is, can you read what proper test index? Yeah, so it's a ratio of scores in the 80s to scores in the 60s. And anything, I mean, two and above is historically like we don't get proper tests anymore. And so to get a two on Thursday at Augusta.
Starting point is 01:13:16 TC, I thought you made a great point. Every year at Augusta, it's like a different vintage. And I love this year. I'm looking to buy cases. I think, you know, I hope they don't dial anything back. It's so good. There were three shots in particular. You guys talked about Ludwig, chipping off from the back of 13 into the creek.
Starting point is 01:13:39 That was fantastic. P. Reed, watching that ball bound over 50s. and we saw it all day. Like, I just don't remember seeing a lot of that in recent years. And I love that. I absolutely love it. Big Bob de-greening himself on 15. Like, I felt like there were more shots this year that kind of reminded me when I was a kid and first getting into the Masters.
Starting point is 01:14:02 And, you know, that, that, like, oh, my gosh, that ball's still. Oh, look where this ball ends up. That ball is still rolling. And I just feel like maybe we weren't getting as much of that. that in years past. And today I felt like the ball was just moving on the ground and guys were flummoxed and I love it. I absolutely love it. So that was my second one. Randy, one thing I'd add to that, I would like to see I sat there for two hours watching, you know, basically like eye line with that back of 15. I just would love to see a few more balls go in the water there. Like if they could cut it in
Starting point is 01:14:37 on the left, like I didn't see Patrick Reed's going, but I had it in my notes of like, man, some of these, they should roll into the water. The long shots, you're saying? The long ones. Yeah, not all of them, but if, like, if you miss long right, you're, you're good and you got the chip. But if you, if you go at that pin and you miss long left, like, I feel like that should be wet.
Starting point is 01:14:54 But I like that. You're, you're alive back there because it makes that shot back up to the, to the green that much more crazy. Like, you, the risk of chipping back into the pond, you know what I mean? Like, if, if the pond cuts in too close, then you, you, you don't have much of, as much distance chipping back onto that green. And that is a nightmare. But they, they're still, like, he had to still drive.
Starting point is 01:15:11 Like, P had to still drop. But it was, P, hit in the water. Yeah. It dropped and then hit an unbelievably good shot. But he's like, Neil's saying,
Starting point is 01:15:19 I'd like to hit in the water twice. Yes, I'd like to see, like, that pond is not in play. It should be, and I don't want it to be totally in play. Like,
Starting point is 01:15:28 I don't want all those balls going in there, but there's an opportunity where, and it seems like they're trying to do it where the, the pond cuts, like if you do miss over the left side of 15, there's a much more likely chance that goes in the pond than right. And I just wanted to be a little more.
Starting point is 01:15:42 You know, like I would like to see two or three more go in. And because they're still hitting that chip back. That's why it's like, oh, man. Like, you know, Fred couples had a train wreck. He had two in the water. I saw some of the older patrons. He was tears rolling before that. Yeah, he came in at two under and just wrecked it, man.
Starting point is 01:15:58 And then he hit in the water on 16. That was kind of tough to watch. Potential, potential cooler narrative developing around you. I know. I know. I felt like I, I, am I like a machine? What's going on here? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:16:10 Is he in four-putts? Woodland's ball, long of 15, deserved to get wet. It did not, and he still struggled with the chips. But that was a little further right of the flag, Neil. But I'm with you. A few more balls in the water, I think, is good. A quick thrill and delight. My favorite pin on 16 today, had to enjoy it.
Starting point is 01:16:30 I'm not sure if they're going to go top shelf on the right again this week. They're going to start going to the influencer pins, ready. They'll actually do that. They do a back right day and a front right day. I think we'll see. We're going to get waterboarded with Jack whole locations. Oh, uh, cool. God, T.C. Which we got waterboarded with Jack today, via different shows. Jack was available today.
Starting point is 01:16:57 Another little thrill and delight. Kurt Kittiyama, Neil, I know that wasn't one of your better ones, but I did get a sick satisfaction of Brian Campbell, DFL on the Beluga big board, firing a 71 today. Yeah. How about that? A hell of an effort. Yeah. Did that kind of counteract some of the, some of the PTI?
Starting point is 01:17:19 Hmm. Hmm. That's a good question. And I think the PTI is what it is. I'm giving credit to Brian Campbell. The PTA is blind. Yeah. I'm choosing, I'm choosing to recognize his great round today.
Starting point is 01:17:33 Kind of an awesome. We buried the first three and they're just like held on for dear life. You know, it's kind of great. 15. I saw him come through 15, 16. He played solid. And I was like, damn it. You know, I'm saying to myself, bummer. I didn't want to explain to anyone sitting around me what the belugas big board was. I was just kind of quietly ruminating on Brian Campbell stunning on me. Also, Hal Tong Lee, maybe the, maybe the most unexpected 71. I mentioned the Scotty and Rory possibility.
Starting point is 01:18:03 Speaking of Hal Tong? Yeah, please. Did you see the Hal Tong story about him? I guess he was hanging out with Rory and Faxon was over there. He thought Faxon was an amateur. He thought Faxon was like a low handicap amateur. He's like, man, this guy's pretty good for an amateur. That's a pretty good move.
Starting point is 01:18:22 Really good. Solly's out. He's disgusted by that. The last thing I had, I kind of had the Rory and Scotty possibility as one of my thrills and delights. But I also, you guys mentioned the great man, Justin Rose, being involved. I just think they're the supporting cast of what could be an unbelievable drama this weekend when you consider P, when you consider Tommy Fleetwood, when you consider Disease X, Xander
Starting point is 01:18:51 Schauchley. We have some real interesting possibilities and guys that have done it, guys that haven't done it, guys that are popular, guys that aren't popular. It just, it's a really nice potpourri and I'm, I'm very excited. I think the board, the conditions, I'm more amped this year than I felt in quite a while. We had, you mentioned Tommy Fleetwood. I think, Cody, maybe we had one more report from on the ground regarding Mr. Fleetwood.
Starting point is 01:19:29 Some say the bird noises here at Augustine National are piped in, but we all heard the rooster crow when TC denied Tommy Fleetwood three times on the preview podcast. The gallery will not stop talking about it as Tommy. strives triumphantly across the Hogan Bridge here in Aman Corner on the 12th hole playing some very fine golf. He has risen indeed. Some are declaring that Mr. T.C.'s predictions were blasphemous. Cric on. Salina worked on that.
Starting point is 01:19:57 We workshoped that one in the media center this morning. Yeah, something very little Catholic school. Speaking of birds, was Sally, you know, you were saying there were a lot of birds out there? Tons of birds today, too. They're real. So any new sightings for you? New birds. I know like four birds total, so no.
Starting point is 01:20:17 Did you see any of them out there? Did we just do the rooster thing? Yeah, we did. It was good. It was good. It was, yeah. It plays. Yeah, I thought it played.
Starting point is 01:20:28 Randy, good stuff, man. We will. Oh, can I, can I get, Randy, one thing just for you. I had a solid five minutes with Fernando Mendoza today. Up by the first tea. Yeah. Whoa. Yeah, Fernando.
Starting point is 01:20:42 Yes, the future number one pick. He's loving. Oh, I got met Tom Brady last week going to the Raiders. He's all jacked up. He's just the nicest guy in the world, truly. Was he a cornball? Yeah, but just like, just dripping sincerity. Just happy to be there.
Starting point is 01:21:00 Just oozing sincerity. Just militantly sincere. Peter Malnoddy. Hard not to like them, Randy. Really. And I feel like with some of those interviews as you did. And I was like, man, come on. This guy's a nice guy.
Starting point is 01:21:11 I mean, I hope he doesn't get chewed up and spit out by Sin City. But nice guy, not as tall as I thought it would be, but delightful interaction. You know who is taller than we thought he would be? Dan Rolowski. Hardest working man of ESPN.
Starting point is 01:21:24 God. Yeah, he's a slender man. It's like 6-6. Oh, wow. You guys said a clapper out there? No clapper. I haven't seen the clapper.
Starting point is 01:21:33 See Eli in the green jacket. Oh, one other one for you, TC. J.R. Smith. Now, and obviously, you know, in the golf world. but what logo do you think he was wearing like top to bottom is he in Melbourne I would I thought it was a Malbin is island just from head to toe and tree farm gear whoa alternate logo Christmas tree farm just visor polo I mean I was like whoa that's it just it was I was like okay ZB I see you ballin how about that yeah it was it was that that was a surprise and delight for me
Starting point is 01:22:08 as well. Neil, did you see Brooks's mock neck today? I loved it. T.C., I absolutely loved it. Right after Spieth hit that disgraceful bunker shot, I was like, oh, is that a mock neck? So it kind of cheered me up a little bit. Like the mock neck. I thought it looked good. It's great.
Starting point is 01:22:24 I thought it did. I don't know. And I got a couple of books. Brooks seems, you know, he's, what did he finish that? Minus one? Even in the ink. Yeah. There's like 50 guys at even. It's great. You look very, you know, mustard and
Starting point is 01:22:38 Mayo, just solid. Super solid. Two holes I was watching. Did you guys happen to see Kata Okas shot on 12? 12? No, he's shots on 12. All of them are important and all of them need to be watched.
Starting point is 01:22:54 It was so sick. Dead shank, dead shank, dead shank off the tea, short of the water. And then just like an absolute mega flop that was like still short of the green. And then a chip that almost went in the bunker and that he fucking cashes the butt it was awesome it was so awesome we might need max
Starting point is 01:23:14 that come in and give us the oral history of this i believe max was playing with him today he was good round for max even part of day as well yeah uh can i give you one more uh because i kind of had a question here did you learn anything new about a player um and i i just want to shout out like i i'm going to declare that i'm in on harry hall dege i'd like to join you just the hat the All of it. The facial hair, the body, the outfit, the wimpy-ass T-shots. I mean, it's just a, it's kind of a thrill to see up close. And it's a lot, but it's definitely something.
Starting point is 01:23:49 And I'm, I'm rooting for, I'm root for the bloke. That's all thing. Did you see the hat today? Did you see the actual, the, I'll see if I can, I just sent to Cody, but I'll see if I can get it up here as well. But, like, like, it wasn't just the, the Bryson hat. It looked like, like, an actual, like, Pillsbury doughboy. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:24:07 So much build to it. Yeah. That's not right. Sorry. No, it's pretty, yeah, it's pretty, pretty billowy.
Starting point is 01:24:14 This was what I was trying to put up that right there. Yeah. It had a lot of, a lot of substance to it. But it's just like the razor shave. Like I was, I saw him behind 17. And,
Starting point is 01:24:24 you know, so I was right on the rope line. And it's just like, he's just had a razor shave up the back of his, of his skull. And that he's got this. It's a picky blinder. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:24:32 he's got some good facial hair. I was like, man, I should probably get on board with this guy. Like, we're kind of same wavelength. with a look. And, you know, he's got like Air Jordans on.
Starting point is 01:24:41 I mean, it's just all kinds of stuff going on. It's really something. Did you see a couple of weeks ago when he flew to the Peeky Blinders premiere and then flew back to the tournament? Yeah. I'm in. All of this, man. I'm a big peekie blinders guy.
Starting point is 01:24:55 He brought his absolute boys over from the UK. Exactly. Yeah. Brought the bloke in for the premiere? How about that? Man, all right. We'll take this awful idea. Very, very pumped to hear this.
Starting point is 01:25:05 And one other thing for you, T.C. Same group. I might also be a Brennanite. I think he's got the Riz. He's got juice. He's got some, he's got some, oh yeah, like fire. And he missed, he missed a putt on 16 did a really classy, like 360 putter flip, but like style, you know what I mean? Like caught it. It just was like, oh, this guy's an athlete. Tasteful. Yeah, he's got, you know, loud traits, all of it. So I kind of thought he might be boring, but I'm, I'm kind of coming around on him seeing him up close. So yeah, even Pars. 72 today. Somebody that didn't do a classy
Starting point is 01:25:41 putter flip was Big Shot Bob. I think we need to address the behavior from Big Shot Bob. You probably need to. Yeah. The fuck is we. He was on 12. He said, Jesus, fuck.
Starting point is 01:25:56 On 12. He took a gash out of the fairway on 14. He flicked off the whole, you know, he flicked off just indiscriminately on 15. And it had another outbursts. Maybe the golfing gods. We don't even know who it was direct to that. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:26:10 It's just, it's not good, guys. And it's just really, really surly out there right now. Randy, are we, should we be worried about the Augusta area with,
Starting point is 01:26:19 you know, big shot Bob tonight? I told Neil and Sali, I sent him direct message. I said, guys, just be careful. He might be roaming the streets.
Starting point is 01:26:28 Could you, could you pass along the rage room addressed in? We'd like, maybe we can get him in a confined area, like a proper place to, to purge. I mean, he really does. It is like he looks like a guy that's just like keeping some urges inside of him.
Starting point is 01:26:43 It doesn't look great. See, I think I saw you tweet something about Nike making that shirt gust him for him. That fucking sure was awful. I thought it was one of his better ones. I'm not going to lie. I actually saw a person. I was like, I kind of dig that one, man. It looked like a dish towel.
Starting point is 01:27:00 You know, like you find it your grandmother's house like hanging on the stove handle. Oh, man. Can we go down the leaderboard a bit? Yeah, let's do it. We're approaching an hour and a half. I feel like I need this. This is very important. So guys,
Starting point is 01:27:14 Burns was five under on the par fives today. I just want to call that out. That's a interesting, interesting development. First time you're going to see. Still five under for the last time I said that. Oh, I know, but just five under on the par fives. It's definitely.
Starting point is 01:27:29 Also is in the opening. Isn't it great, though, knowing like he's not going to win. It's really confident. You guys mentioned got her up. Up. So Day played well. Lowry, kind of sneaky, sneaky good round from him, despite the three putt there.
Starting point is 01:27:48 We don't need to get to disease X until tomorrow, I don't think. We talked about the great man team Rose, just getting every last shred of value out of his game. Ring in the towel. Who else? Nick Taylor? Yeah. Sneaky T10 there.
Starting point is 01:28:03 All these guys are stunting on the blue. It's tough. Aaron Rye was very involved for a long time today. He shot 71. We talked about Homa, McCarty. We didn't really talk about Bridgman in his debut, getting it under par in his first round. That's exciting stuff.
Starting point is 01:28:20 In the afternoon, too. That's good. Got him in lineups this week, Deach. Hell yeah. You know that. Value play. Right, Tan, played well. I want to shout out Kegan Bradley.
Starting point is 01:28:30 Kegan was, I don't often have to hand it to Kegan. Higel was four over walking off the seventh green and shot 72. I think he got over the Ryder Cup, right? As walking off the seventh green, it sounds like. It's time. It's time to let it go. Hottest player in the world, Stephen Gerard, or Ryan Gerard. T.C.
Starting point is 01:28:49 Ryan Gerard led the field in putting today. Like, you could cancel Christmas. Also, Deed, your son, J.M. Last and approach play in a field that has some of the aforementioned guys, Jose Maria, Fred couples, all the amateurs, it's bad for our guy with the irons.
Starting point is 01:29:11 Bob did surpass him with that display coming in, but he ended up being second worst. Samuel Stevens, 72, just keep an eye on that one. I think Samuel Stevens might be a proper player in training. I heard Wyndham was really muttering a lot of stuff under his breath,
Starting point is 01:29:27 had some tantrums out there. He shot 72. Sergio shot 72. he had a custom custom augusta fireballs bag like it's there's just little there's little things sometimes that like I was just watching live from this morning
Starting point is 01:29:40 and Sergio's bag was out on the range and it was you know it was white with these little pink flowers on either side of the fireballs logo and there's just little things that kind of remind me of like oh man like sometimes I forget how fucking stupid live is
Starting point is 01:29:55 Sergio is low low live right yeah I think he's single-hannily holding up the dam. I didn't think about Tiro Hatton one single time until you just said his name today, and I was at the Masters. He shot 74, uh,
Starting point is 01:30:10 bogey at 18, shoot 74. It's probably the course's fault. Okay, because he looked like he was playing alright coming through 15. Yeah. I think God like that, I think that group at even.
Starting point is 01:30:20 I'm fascinated to see huge group. Who kind of emerges from that. You got Goder up, Speeth, Kepka, Benny Booms, J.T. 72 from him.
Starting point is 01:30:29 Pretty decent start. Jake Knapp. 73. Good to see. Some signs of wise from Dustin Johnson. 73. I think 73 was not a bad score today. Totally. How did Oxy look? You were with that group.
Starting point is 01:30:44 He was up and down. What did he end up shooting? 1 over. He was up and down. He drove it in the bush on 5 and had to take it on playable to get out of that one. He had a great chipping on 14 if you want to go back and watch a shot after chipping up the slope there on that front right pin. but double on 17 he's he's fun to watch he's creative
Starting point is 01:31:05 there's just oh there's always something going on he's got fun shot shapes to watch and it's always kind of jarring to contrast his shot shapes up against the right he's obviously that he plays with so it was uh that was that was I'm glad I picked that group this morning Reed Fleetwood Akshay was was definitely the highlight of my day
Starting point is 01:31:20 um how far back is too far back only the one I'm going to shout out while there is Cam Young who also so yeah that well that was I was going to leave that because because I think plus two is still in this. I think anything beyond that's probably probably tough sledding.
Starting point is 01:31:38 But like Cam Young was four over through through seven as well. And then it was not going well. I was with them. And yeah, it was just kind of sloppy. Like on two, he dumped it in the front bunker.
Starting point is 01:31:51 I think he just hit a Mondo drive on two. Position A, dumped in the front right bunker, made bogey there, I think. Stinky stuff. No, he made par. but still not what you want to do after that drive. I think it's a long tournament.
Starting point is 01:32:08 I think Plus 2 can still win. I think Ludwig can still win, which I don't know if we've fully addressed the Ludwig situation. I feel like that kind of got just kind of brushed off a little bit there if we're talking about the plus twos. Listen, he had two doubles. He doubled nine and 13. He had bounced back on 14, hit a seed in there.
Starting point is 01:32:29 Smooth sound there. I will say this, he got crowned on 15. Oh, absolutely crowned. Oh, my God. Not a good chip from behind the green. Can't believe that didn't go in the water. That was not, that was unbecoming. I'll say that.
Starting point is 01:32:46 Let's talk Ludwig tomorrow night. We'll see what he does tomorrow. I think it's inconclusive evidence. There was also bad vibes, like you said, in that group with Rom. Right. So, we can go from there tomorrow. Good spin in the moment, T.C. It's just bad vibes.
Starting point is 01:33:04 Yeah, no, I think it's Rob. I swear to God. Chemistry in the group is off. I think we throw this one out. Is T.C. on the show tomorrow night? I'm not. I got to 14 and I saw Ludwig was plus three and Rom plus six. I literally thought out loud.
Starting point is 01:33:21 I was like, oh, my God, T.C.'s going to blame Rom for Ludwig playing like shit. I literally thought that out loud. That was, I was late in the day where I was sitting on 15, 16. and there's a bit of, because a lot of these guys are not on the main scoreboard, and they flip, they turn the, like the whole, the three guys coming through, they turn that scoreboard. And when they turned that one over, I was like, oh, my God, rock six. Oh, like, what the hell is going on?
Starting point is 01:33:42 That wasn't out there today. That was, that was. It's just, it's just, it kind of stunk, man. Sorry. All right. Well, you know, I think he salvaged something coming down the stretch there. I want to give a shout out to the flashy wide boy, Marco Penge. He made a triple on two.
Starting point is 01:34:01 He played pretty nicely otherwise. He shot 76. I think he, I think he rebounds tomorrow. Same as Branson. Super flashy. I don't know. Super proper.
Starting point is 01:34:14 He visited the Delta counter over there. What else? Low Rasmus. Rasmus near guard Peterson plus five right now. Rasmus Hoygard plus six. I got Foxy struggled a little bit as well. Cantlay doing regular Cantlay. We're in the beluga's honeyhole here.
Starting point is 01:34:31 I kind of called all the, I'm fishing in the right pond here in the midfield. I think a balloon is going to age well this week. Yeah. Disappointing stuff from, from, from, uh, Daniel Berger. Yeah. Plus four from him. Manwu plus six, 78 from the men woo. We've been glazing him a little bit.
Starting point is 01:34:51 Uh, and then Neil, your guy, your guy, Nico chavaria. Chavaria. Chavaria. Yeah, that one was on me. I just forgot the E. I mean, I was moving so fast. And then, yeah, and then Davis Riley, we still can't figure it out, but he, he's struggling. It's not going well. He lost, gosh, it's probably changed since I looked at it this afternoon. But he was, when I looked at it last, he was last in the field, strokes gained off the T by more than two shots off the person who was second to last.
Starting point is 01:35:22 Like, it's, it's kind of like a Nick Dunlap type of situation. It's not good. Real quick, I think another couple of things I had was just people were pretty appalled by the MIS, his appearance on the ESPN. A MIS, T-C, not the M-GAM show. Neil, I don't know if you saw this. Who is Amis? I'm not familiar with the MIS. There's somebody who was appalled online. It's a good example of one of those.
Starting point is 01:35:49 No, there's thousands and thousands of people in LU. This is not a slight at Laura Rutledge or, like, I think some of the people on ESPN are doing good stuff. There's just between the par three contest yesterday and whatever the fuck this is. There's just some bad signs going on. It sounded like the app was glitchier this year. It was slow moving and glitchier. I don't know what's going on with that. The broadcast was a little shaky today.
Starting point is 01:36:17 Like they should Scotty's T shot on 11 twice. There was just some weird cuts here and there. I don't know if they're kind of needed, but also some nice picture and picture stuff that they were doing. too so a little bit uneven overall so we'll see if that improves into tomorrow um can i just say two things about the miss yeah who is his things uh he's a professional wrestler and so i got to think there's like an espn w wwee tie-in which is don't do that the masters why he's there but he also went to miami he's a he's a red hawk tc he's one of us me and sally i don't care Hell yeah.
Starting point is 01:37:00 Yeah, I think I would just say that the whole like, oh, well, you got to understand this as an ESPN cross-promotion. That sounds like ESPN's problem. That does not sound like- No, I'm not saying he should be there. I'm just answering the question. Why might he be there? Yeah. And then, I don't know, I just, I feel, I'm just getting to the point where there's just a lot of really cute stuff.
Starting point is 01:37:21 I think we will unpack this on Sunday, but there's some stuff that just feels a little too cute. I think the merch stuff has jumped the shark. completely. I'm very much like a, I feel like the guy who's like, let's put the Christ Christ back in Christmas. What have, what have they done to my master's? I feel like they need to just sell like five, five skews of shirts, five skews of hats, get rid of this gnome, get rid of a bunch of the bullshit that like people are just going to the masters to buy stuff. That is disgusting. Do not say happy holidays to T.C. Your wife asked me to get her a gnome.
Starting point is 01:37:56 Your household. We will address that in house. Okay. So don't get one. It's like when she hired the people to put up your Christmas. Exactly. Is this what you guys are about? Give me one of those gnomes.
Starting point is 01:38:08 I was like, seriously? She's like, yeah. I'm like, okay, I'll try. T.C. Any thoughts on Amazon Prime? First time Amazon Prime's been introduced here as a master's. We got some extra coverage. You got to have something on it.
Starting point is 01:38:22 It was nice. It was nice the one to three window to have that on. A lot of music going on. Like they did like all sorts of. musical lead-ins. I think the, it was almost, like it wasn't that different than,
Starting point is 01:38:34 like it just seemed like there was a lot going on all day. There was a lot of different commentators. There was a lot of shuffling in and out of different, different people. The Wright-Thompson stuff is just a little too syrupy for me these days and a little too over the top. Like they're just, they're just kind of, you know,
Starting point is 01:38:54 nostalgia maxing on that stuff. I don't know. That is shocking from the guy who wants to put Christ back in Christmas. I will say that. That is a bit surprising. What did you guys think? Deage and Cody and Randy. I thought it was solid.
Starting point is 01:39:11 I thought it was, yeah, I don't want to jump the, jump the gun because I do think there's a larger, there's some shifts in the masters that I think is like, we're joking about it now, but I do think there's an interesting conversation to be had. We can maybe do that on Sunday. But I do think there's some things. that are more is more. And I think the coverage falls into that bucket. And so I got done today and I was like one to three. Hell yeah, I can't wait to fire up like a new broadcast. You guys know how I feel about the featured groups, featured streams, all of those things. I'd rather just
Starting point is 01:39:42 watch a broadcast. It's nice to be able to fire that up at one. Flip side of that if I'm, if I'm putting myself in the positions of the misters in the green jackets is, uh, there is a little bit of a difference in that like feel that Christmas morning feeling of oh my gosh the broadcast is starting when it's one o'clock and it's amazon prime and it's terry ganon no offense to terry janin that's just it's a different it is a different feeling when it's like i've been waiting all day for sunday night sort of a sort of vibe and like i'm gonna hear jim nance at three o'clock and i can't fucking i can't wait uh it's a little different now so that's just kind of taking the good with the bad i guess but they had nance they had trevor they had a lot of really really good stuff and over
Starting point is 01:40:24 overall was very additive, I thought, but it's, it's a change. It just, I wasn't watching it, but to me, it's just like, man, I wish it was just come on ESPN at one. Like, I don't need two channels. That's one of the beauties of watching the Masters is you need one channel. It's one of the things I hate about the BGA tour watching. It's like, I have to change channels in the middle of it. And could not come up with a first world problem faster in my head than having to change
Starting point is 01:40:46 the channel. But it, I don't know. I think it's to watch it, but that's how I feel. There's just some little troubling. signs and little symptoms here and there. And I think, yeah, we'll talk about that more on Sunday. But hopefully the app, hopefully they push out an update or something overnight. Because it just felt a little, like that's the master's app is like the best thing in the world.
Starting point is 01:41:09 And if that starts lacking or not not being the best thing in the world anymore, we got problems. Some of these leaders might start going to live. Again, if you want to watch coverage, you can get it on that. app or on the website. I was riding with Shane, Billy and Wags all morning. I love that. I think that's why the transition over to Amazon Prime today with the CBS team and NBC team was just kind of a little bit too much. And I always leave this event reminding myself of yesterday's and ESPN golf coverage and wanting more of that. And for some reason after getting them yesterday and then, you know, a little bit today, I'm just like, I don't have that feeling at all, which is.
Starting point is 01:41:54 stinks. And I don't know what it is, but I hope that that flushes out, you know, before tomorrow is done at least. Yeah. I think we should move to, move to wrap this up, land this plane. I unfortunately, because I'm a good guy, I'm going to take a look at the order of our draft results through day one. It's not looking good for me.
Starting point is 01:42:16 I remember after the draft being like, I can't believe you guys are going to give me fucking Bryson and John Rom. This is unbelievable that you guys are giving. me these. Cody, do we have, do we have the rest of the results? It's not, it's not good. Solly and first, uh, right now projected 3.9 million dollars. Uh, thanks. Can I also just say you guys tried to screw me by having a five round draft. Uh, when, when you have a snake, you should, it needs to be an even number of rounds. But yeah, continue. Can we do another round now? Uh, Neil and second right now, uh, a distant second two point one. Still some, some guys in the mix.
Starting point is 01:42:53 No, yeah. Long way to go. Long way to go. Randy, with the eventual champion, Jordan Spieth on his team is currently in third with 1.0708 if you're rounding a million dollars. Tron and I coming in under the million mark for a combined five players, which is tough these days in pro golf. He's at 967,000. I'm at 450,000. Currently only one player projected to make the cut, Tommy Fleetwood. Bad stuff. Please, DJ Pye, now driving. Was that guy louder today? So loud. Dude, I'm so glad you said that. Yes. He was on site. I couldn't hear.
Starting point is 01:43:33 I couldn't hear. I didn't hear him say it one time. Yeah. Really? Oh, yeah. It sounded like he was screaming at the top of this. Yeah. He got a miced up.
Starting point is 01:43:41 Yeah. Because I didn't hear him once. I probably watched nine opening T shots. I thought you were going the complete opposite direction with that, DJ. I could not hear him. Oh, that's wild. Can I give one shout out. You guys will enjoy.
Starting point is 01:43:52 Matlati Wood. Excuse me, Lodi Wode in person. Flame them. Comments, flame them. See, everybody mispronouns. This is twice as bad because I bet her parents as well, and they're on their way back to Tallahassee right now,
Starting point is 01:44:07 and they're on their listeners of the shows. They're probably heard me misspins that. Hey, oh, double triple apologies. To the Wode family, I apologize. I haven't had dinner yet. It's 9.30. We're also going to be given out. What are we giving out here tonight?
Starting point is 01:44:21 Yeah, we got more NLU Pro Shop, Credit, congrats to Jackson, who won yesterday. Tonight's winner at Borough Golfer 1-2. Nice. Boro golfer 12. Congratulations. Send me an email, Cody, at No Laying Up, and I'll get something over your way. And you know what, guys?
Starting point is 01:44:38 I'm kind of feeling pretty frisky here for day one. So I'm going to do this again. Oh, my God. Oh, my Lord. Cody's got crazy. He's handed out pro shop credit. How about that? I know.
Starting point is 01:44:50 Thank you, of course, Neil, for the codes here. Austin Butler 9452. Congratulations again. Email me Cody at nolayingup.com. Elvis. It is. I thought the bike riders kind of sucked, Austin, but it's, I like a lot of your other work. He was pretty good. Dune 2, though. Of course. It's huge. I like caught stealing. I thought that was a fun movie. I got to fire it up. It's totally fine. Okay. Well, guys, what a hell of a first day. Great to Great to have the whole gang. Guys, sounds like you had a great day on site.
Starting point is 01:45:23 Neil, I wish you a little better fish in tomorrow. Yeah, I'm going to find some honey holes. Don't worry. Maybe, I don't know, spinner bait or something tomorrow.
Starting point is 01:45:29 I take the fish finder out. I was trying to, you know, being too cute today. You're going to hear from Spiel tomorrow? Yeah, I know. That was a miss by me.
Starting point is 01:45:36 I got behind the, I got behind James, man. I'm sorry. Sounds like you were frazzled. I was. That's not 80, 801 today.
Starting point is 01:45:45 It doesn't know what to do. It's a long tournament, man. It's fine. It's just Thursday. Did you lose the tournament today? You can lose it on Thursday. Did you lose it?
Starting point is 01:45:53 No, I don't think so. Who won the golf first? Or who won today? Neil or the golf first? I don't think I battled back here for a good live show performance. I'll let the viewers be the judge of that. What was the best concession item? Any new?
Starting point is 01:46:08 What was the best? I didn't need concessions today. I didn't. No. I'm kind of. I, well, I had a cheeseburger under the umbrellas with my brother and sister and a lot. was delightful. Nothing to report on that
Starting point is 01:46:20 chewy, the chewy. I haven't had the candy bar yet. No, I need to do that tomorrow. Can you commit, make a commitment to me on that? Will you have one of those tomorrow? Yeah, get asked. Yeah. You know what? I'll do you want better. I'll bring it home. Okay. And I'll eat it on the live show. Do not. A live reaction. Do not commit to eating the whole thing is what I'm going to save you from.
Starting point is 01:46:38 You should taste it, but do not, I won't let you commit to eating the whole thing. Wait, you have hard. It's hard to finish. This falls into the same camp. What are we doing? You know? See if you can eat it through the whole show. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:46:52 I've had it. I had two bites. I couldn't. I made it 25% the way through. I couldn't finish it. It's like an RX bar. Tune in tomorrow for some food reviews. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:47:05 It's not good. I want to give a shout out to Wayne Riley on this sky sports. Yes. So he was following Rory's group. It was dead silent next to seven. he just he because he's in the crowd they don't let him inside the ropes and all of a sudden it's just i think oh just shot you know and everyone turns out who the who the is that guy with the hat on he's he's a radar radar well so radar had he had a he had a great
Starting point is 01:47:31 just a great lead-in segment that they threw up on on on on on x the everything app and he's got his hat on and everything but he's he was it's going it's going to be immense it's gonna be a i think it's gonna be the best masters in years it's gonna be immense It was, God, it got me in for the day. One thing I, they delivered. I do want to give a shout to, I believe, to a bunch of college bros that were near the concession stand just left of seven. Jenna Sims came like walking across the walkway. She has like on a very bright green like crop top like attention seeking outfit.
Starting point is 01:48:03 She walks in front of like five college bros and they legitimately were like, oh yeah, looking good, Jenna. Looking good. Like gave her the full on like a cat call essentially as she walked. by it felt very 1973 in that moment. But I also think she lapped it up and quite really enjoyed it. What are we doing, guys? What are we doing? These people should be talking about shot values.
Starting point is 01:48:26 And Kepka's wife's jewelry. She had a green. Rob's wife had a green blazer on. And some of the most obnoxious jewelry you could ever possibly imagine, like a cross. You would actually appreciate that as you're putting the Christ back in Christmas T.C. but just a massive diamond cross.
Starting point is 01:48:46 Like some of the jewelry is so big that it like you would have to think that it's fake, but you also know he's made $300 million and you know it's real. Just extremely obnoxious stuff going on. Like a green blazer, green blazer? Like a green jacket green blazer, yes. Like a bad idea. Bad karma. Bad karma for John.
Starting point is 01:49:05 And indirectly Ludwig. Yeah. Bad vibes in the group. Yeah. I look forward to that conversation. tomorrow. I may have to call in for that. Guys, that's it. That's it for round one.
