Be the right club.
Be the right club today.
Johnny, that's better than most.
How about him?
It is better than most.
Better than most.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the No Laying Up live show,
presented, as always, by our friends at Titleist Day 1, President's Cup edition.
Yeah, you know, you know, it happened.
We had a day one, Sall here.
We spent the day out at Medina,
And by we, I mean, me and my guy, TC sitting to my right.
Hello, T.C.
Hello, Sally.
Good to be here.
Good to be in the windy city or thereabouts.
Just outside the windy city, just west of the windy city.
A little windy out there today.
Yeah.
It turned into a gorgeous day out there.
We got Thursday night football on the night.
We got DJ's Packers against my Falcons.
And we had five matches out there today.
There were indeed five matches played.
He's rise.
He's risen.
a little bit. He was supposed to be here.
He's been battling it on the home front
and the health front. Mr. DJ Pi. Hello,
Dej. Hey, guys. Good to be with you.
Yeah, it's been a tough
couple of days. Your boy's just been
laying in bed.
But good to be back. Good to be with you. Good to watch
some golf. It was a good good thing to have on the TV
today when I couldn't do much of anything else
and excited to talk about it.
Deid, you're just like me whenever
you're sick. Even
when I say, tell people I'm sick, I get
the feeling that they think I'm faking it.
So I way over describe everything I'm going through.
So we actually do know exactly what you've been going through
because you have been keeping us quite updated that it has not been,
not been pretty.
Here's all my stats, guys.
Here's my date.
I'm an open book.
You want to know my heart rate?
Here you go.
It's not good.
It's not good.
It's all he's got his analytics team right here.
Yeah, exactly.
I got a big board up here just outside the camera frame.
You cannot see.
Don't pair me with more cow tomorrow.
It would be a nightmare.
Today's show, we are going to react, of course, to the matches.
We're going to talk about our day on site as,
as well. I got a little game for later. I tested it out on TC and our live audience last night at recess.
Thanks to everyone here in Chicago that came out to that. I'm going to try it on you, Dege.
I don't even know if you know this is coming, but it's a quiz game just for you because T.C. already knows the answers.
But, and of course, I hate that. I'm usually on the other side. I usually, I like being the ones with the answers,
not trying to answer them. Well, of course, look at tomorrow's matches as well.
Head of the President's Cup, Footjoy, had three of the players from the U.S. team meet with their head footwear fitter.
and product development team testing the new 2027 shoes and confirming they're in the right
equipment for them because the best players in the world know the right footwear is mission
critical in order to play their best.
T.C. and I went out.
That's Bubba, right?
Bubba Crager?
I believe so, yeah.
Did an entire fitting.
Did some testing of what our speed looks like in different shoes.
Very easy conclusion for me.
I'm a hyperflex guy.
I don't think I've worn anything but hyperflex ever since we've tested that out.
But I miss the premieres.
The premieres look the best.
at least like with a pair of pants.
I miss wearing those,
but I can't bring myself to do it now.
I'm two miles an hour faster in the hyperflux.
And I'm a Premier guy.
I'm a,
you know,
I'm a Premier player,
Premier.
I look good in the premieres.
I play good in the premieres.
I feel good in the premieres.
If you're looking to play your best,

Where's the best place to start?
Did you took it in?
from TV. We took it in from on site. What's the, what's the top story of day one at the President's
Cup? If you're just catching up, the U.S. is leading three to two and we will go into each individual
match. We do have the matchups already in for tomorrow. We can do some second guessing, all that
fun stuff. But where do you think we start here, Dege? I want to flip it right back to you. What do you
think is the story of the day today when all the ink is spilled, Sali, when all the columns are
written, what's going to be Thursday at the President's Cup, Year of Our Lord,
26. What was what was the story? Are you going to go there early? I don't want to. I want to, you know, I want to talk about the golf. I want to get there. But it was just very much a, what are we doing here? What's going on here?
All right.
We'll get to that later.
We'll get just say JT.
All right.
Come on.
Justin Thomas played JT.
We'll get to all the negative stuff later.
There was some great,
great golf.
I do think on the,
this is not a hamster dame.
I'm not going to get to the broadcast just yet.
I do think one of the biggest takeaways I had from being on site.
Like this is supposed to be a different event.
This is a unique event.
This is about the atmosphere.
It's about the rowdiness.
It's allegedly supposed to be about all those things.
And a big takeaway I had was because of,
the way the buildout has been done and the setup has done.
A lot of that stuff probably isn't that integral to people's enjoyment of the golf tournament.
But did it seem quiet on television from the little what we talked about it beforehand,
Deage, it did seem quiet on television.
There was a lack of energy.
They have not let the fans get anywhere close to the greens,
especially on the front nine.
Part of that issue is, you know, kind of the shaping of the golf course and pretty
dramatic bunkers around a lot of these greens.
There's a lot of width in this golf course.
lot of short grass and runoff areas and opportunities for balls to roll away and getting fans
too close would kind of interfere with that. But the bad part of it, the negative part of it is
because of how far the golf ball goes where they have to put some of these teas has created so
many spots where fans cannot get around. It's created these massive choke points that
fans can't get anywhere close to some of these greens. And like that's kind of the whole point
of this thing is to be able to get close to the golf shots. And there's plenty of fans out there.
The fans were great. Like they did all they could. But I
kind of just felt bad for them in certain spots because you get around some of these greens.
And there's just, yeah, you can't even get close to it.
One green, two green, three green.
So I have a little graphic here to show this.
Like, because of where you have to put the three T because of how far the golf ball goes,
all the way in the back corner of this property where you see these three Xs on the screen,
you cannot get fans behind there.
Like all the fans are out of bounds to the left of to the right on this image.
Like the fans have to stay back there.
You can't surround there.
But if you put 3T up and make the whole play shorter,
and this is not a commentary on the art,
the redesign that has just been done,
this is a commentary just on distance.
They're stretching it out to get as much as they can out of it.
You could have fans surround that green
and create a little bit of an atmosphere.
Instead, all the area to the right of two green
to the left of this image you're looking at.
There's no fans up there.
There's none at all.
And it gets worse with some of the other holes.
If you look at this one,
the worst example is probably four green.
And where they have this fifth T,
which is a shared box essentially with the eighth T,
you now tee back over the fourth green.
So where this red X's fans can't get close at all to the action there.
Like they can't get close, can't make any noise.
Theoretically, if you put the T up and to the left,
if the ball didn't go as far,
fans would be able to crowd all around that fourth green
and create an atmosphere around that one.
I'm not going to do this for every hole,
but you can keep going.
Like the fifth one might be the worst one
because you had this Frankenstein 6T on the par 5 all the way back
where it's between three,
T and the fairway, like it is way, way back there and in the way of 3T,
and then there is nowhere, anywhere close to five green that you can get.
So that's kind of the explanation for why there wasn't a lot of noise out there.
And that's just a few.
I mean, you get near nine.
I mean, they have a 40-yard wide walkway for the players to go from nine green to 10 T
that's completely unnecessary.
The fans could be so much closer to that green.
It's a cool part three.
Like it just seems like they let the fans.
down a little bit in terms of there's already not that much golf to watch not being able to get
close and make noise i think had an effect on what what was a relatively sleepy day i think it had a non-zero
effect yeah it was they played really slow too it was five and a half hour pace from the first
group out that didn't have anybody in front of them and it didn't get any better from there uh god sally
you're just you're you're you're harping on stuff that i would normally harp on like pretty
we're going to be talking about the sawgrass marriott and connecting the lake cadizabeth
to Lake Michigan and, you know, to the St. Lawrence Seaway.
I'm harping on it because it affected, I think everybody's enjoyment of the day.
Some of this stuff, I don't know if people really, if it really gets to them,
the same way does you.
And there were some weird choke points, too, just getting around the property as well.
But as far as the golf goes, I think the, like, I've been to, I don't know,
I've been to three or four of these now.
There's just not a lot.
There's just, there's not a lot of golf going on.
It's going to be the same.
It's going to be even more professional.
found tomorrow with there's only 10 balls in play on the entire golf course.
And so it's one of those things where you know, you got five matches.
The golf was a little uneven at first.
And like I was excited to see the, the OB down the left side on one and two.
Definitely more in play on two.
I couldn't believe how many balls hit the fence and came back in.
We need to get them to shave that rough down underneath the fence, you know,
separating out the fairway and the OB.
narrow strip of rough there.
It's that, okay, there's no possible reason why.
For normal member play, that is short and balls roll under the fence and go out of
bounds and for the best players of the world offer there to help keep the ball in balance.
Like that is, I don't think it should be grown up for the members,
but if there was one way or the other, it should be reverse of how they're doing it.
I cannot understand why that, why they would set that up that way.
The whole architecture element and strategy of that is no B down the left.
Especially, again, especially in match play.
It's not like you're wrecking somebody's card.
It's not like you're wrecking somebody's tournament.
It's like you lose one hole if you hit it out of bounds.
And you might not even lose.
Like Coyvin hit it out of bounds and they tied the hole.
You know?
And it's just, yeah, maddening to see that how many balls were stopping right there.
And there's a couple other ones too, like eight.
That whole 30 foot bank that shaved out.
Why is any ball coming to rest down there?
Like what the hell is the point of that?
I specifically talked to Mike cocking about that.
he's like yeah that was not designed to be that way that was the balls that missed right of that green were designed to go all the way in the water sally from from someone who's been here before in you know played here before what was like stepping foot on site what was your thought it felt like a completely different property i really until you get to what it was the original old 16th the whole the dj holdout to beat me in the 2019 video so that that go in that go in which was now the normal 15th which is tournament 11 i know it's confusing until you get to there
that was the first time I'd be like, ah, I have been here before.
I remember that. The rest feels like a completely, completely different golf course.
18, kind of, you know, where that finishes is still the same and where one and two are still feel the same.
But it is completely different.
And that's where, you know, it's, it's, it's, they've done all the things we like to see courses do.
The bunkers are a lot more interesting.
They're better shape.
The grass, the short grass around the greens, the contouring around the greens is much more defined.
There's a lot of different quadrants in the greens.
They use a lot of really good hole locations today.
They had some really aggressive pins and some really interesting spots.
That was right from the jump.
Yeah, I loved the one on 15, our first hole, T.C.,
which is like hanging off the edge of the planet there on the left side of that green,
like the scariest shot ever, downhill wedge.
But I loved even right from the jump.
That first hole is tucked way over there on the right.
Everybody kept going on the right.
Team USA could not stop missing it right in that bunker.
Kind of the one spot you couldn't hit it, which then was just like this little microcosm
of everything I like about the golf course and the changes is you miss in that bunker.
A lot of times bunkers are like, whatever, I'll get it up and down 60% of the time, 70% of
the time. Nobody was getting it up and down from that bunker except for JT who hit like the most
unbelievable shot of the day, that little like one hop and stop and you can see everybody
else just trying desperately to generate enough spin and not getting it anywhere within 20 feet.
So that was great right from the jump.
that was an interesting moment.
The very first whole of the tournament,
and he and Coivin were about a foot and a half away from each other in the bunker.
Coivin goes first and splashes sand all over like JT's ball and behind his ball and in his line.
And by the rule, you are able to get, you know,
you're able to recreate the lie you had.
Like, you have a right to the lie you had when you got in there.
So JT got to lift his ball and then rake it.
But they had an interesting conversation.
The rules official, of course, Craig Winter, no laying up podcast guest,
was the rules official in that group.
And the JT, the back and forth they had was like his,
after it was raked,
it was not,
like the original lie he had was not like in bunker times.
They're the third group out and I don't know if that part had not been raked yet
or nobody had been in that part yet.
So he's saying I shouldn't have to place it in bunker times.
And he was making the case to Craig.
Like if I did,
it would be too good of a lie.
Like I can put it up on this ridge and I can prop it up here and it would be too good
of a lie.
And I'm trying to communicate to you that I want it on a smooth part because that's what I had before.
And the international guys kind of came over.
And I think there was the start of a controversy brewing right from the jump.
But it kind of dispelled pretty quickly.
But then JT steps up and just hits this wicked spinner.
After Coyven blew it 25 feet past.
And I was like, oh, this must be an impossible bunker shot.
And JT just hit an epic bunker shot and just set the tone for his incredible day, which we'll get to.
I was going to say, should we get to that now?
Yeah, let's just get into the golf.
He was facing some scrutiny, I guess, a little bit of the enough with J.T.
What are we really doing this again?
He was far and away the best player in the field today.
I mean, he was lights out.
Carrying Coyvin, a lot of the, especially in the early stretch of that match,
but largest margin of victory on the day, just did, did everything well.
Made clutch putts when he needed to.
Looked like a, I don't know, made me feel very old that JT is now this guy,
but just looked like onk, looked like the,
gray-haired veteran just shepherding this kid around.
It was really cool to watch.
You saw that you were with them most of the day, right?
I went with them essentially the entire day until the very end when it was quite clear
they were going to win.
And I went and caught up with the Scotty and Burns match.
But yeah, Coyvin was shaky early.
He was going to make a bogey on one quite easily.
He steps up, pumps one, O.B on two.
Might have pumped the second one, O.B. on two.
Apparently it bounced back in, but he did not finish the hole.
That was his second one.
J.C.
Coyven hit a T-shot OB on one.
Yeah, and he then re-teed.
And then I thought he hit a second one out with his what would have been his fourth shot.
So JT had to make two good pars just to stay in it there.
And then, you know, JT gets one in really close.
Hits the green and two on the par five third.
And then Coyvin stepped up, made about a 20-footer ahead of J-T.
J-T had about four feet for Bertie there.
So that would have been birdie for J-T there.
J-T birdie's four.
He then rolls in a birdie on the fifth hole.
And off the jump, they're two up.
Coivan bounces back, sticks one and under seven feet on the par five-sixth hole.
Now they go to three up very quickly.
And he was just, he was super steady.
Coivin, you know, was kind of up and down.
You could tell he was nervous.
He was nervous.
He got it, you know, and he was struggling in the practice rounds.
Anybody that had been out walking with them kind of said the same thing.
And he was, but he was kind of a good four-ball partner.
He made three birdies today, had a great birdie on 12 and did make, he had made some good pots.
He putted the ball well.
He just did not hit the ball very.
well today and then j t laid the hammer down at the very end birdie 14 uh and then i think
was was it conceded birdie on 15 or did he birdie 15 i wasn't able to catch that i kind of zoned
out on that match just because nico was not even out there and corey conners was doing a
cori connor's thing you know Corey started like a Cory conner's thing and i do got to give him credit
he made some putts coming in because we were all starting to talk about like dude you are
you're missing like 12 footers like straight ones by like a cup and a half like they were
not did not look like professional golf putts.
And then he walked several putts in and he he carried that team.
But yeah, Nico, Nico had a bunch of shots that were looking really good in the air just coming up woefully short.
Like on 12, the short driveable four, the wind kind of picked up in their face and looked like he had a nice shot and it hits right on the bank, falls in the water, steps up on the par 313.
It looks like it while it's in the air that he's flagged that it comes up short on the bank and he really had a tough day.
I like Nico.
I don't think we're going to see Nico again for.
A couple days.
He's playing tomorrow.
He's playing tomorrow.
He is? Yeah.
Isn't he going out tomorrow?
I thought he was sitting.
Maybe I'm.
Yeah, he's sitting.
We got a pet who's coming in.
Fever dream.
It might be my presence cup fever kicking in there.
But to your point, Dej, JT had four recorded birdies.
It would have been five had he, you know, had Coyvin not also rolled in his birdie on the third hole.
Coivin made three birdies, but JT was the strongest.
Strokes game player in the entire field today plus 3.68.
Nico was the worst minus 5.37.
As we've often talked about in these match play events,
especially for ball, there's a lot of noise in the strokes game part to the downside.
Not really on the upside.
Like if you're plus whatever, like you played an excellent round of golf
and probably contribute a lot to your team.
When you get behind, you know, you can chase some pins and whatnot
and kind of end up with a really low-looking, you know, number.
So I don't know if it was minus five bad,
but Nico was not a good teammate bad today, definitely.
Dej, I'm excited to see what these guys do in foursoms tomorrow
after what everybody saw us do with foursomes last night.
I tell you what, T.C., I've never felt more vindicated than I do today
after watching all those guys hit at OB on number two.
I was like, that's, yeah.
You try it, man.
Challenge them.
It's hard.
It's hard out there.
Yeah, best players of the world, it happens to.
Foxy?
Guys,
he's a major champion.
Foxy hit some stinkers today.
He did.
He was not the dude today, T.C.
What question for you guys?
What does JT have to do this week specifically for you?
I wasn't that critical of JT being on the team.
I was critical of Cantlett being on the team.
You tried to do JT as well.
I said we know what we have in JT.
Correct.
He needs the heart and soul of the team.
Admittedly, I didn't think we were going to have this much upside.
T.C.
I will say.
I had no problem with the pick,
but I didn't think it was going to be this good.
I mean, if he could go one in three,
he could go one and four for all we know.
But I'll say how good does he have to be this week
to get to the point where we don't have to do this?
And if he gets a captain's pick,
we don't have to do this conversation annually.
I don't know.
I mean, I just want to see new blood.
It's not a logical thing.
Okay.
There is some new blood.
Well, can I make it a little bit of a logical,
maybe logical, maybe not logical case for the new blood thing is,
I know the PJ Tour doesn't want to hear this.
but man
I'd rather have Coyvin be
shit in his pants today
than you know
and I had a dare manner
yeah
yeah like I don't know
like let's get it out of the system man
let's use this as a testing ground
let's let's get people in these team events early here
what what if
what if they build scar tissue
like what if it really doesn't go very well
and then he's extra nervous for the rider cup
I should I play bad in a president's cup
am I ready for an away rider cup
like that's the other
side of the coin on that. Then he stinks and we know it. Maybe he just stinks. Yeah.
I'm pro coiven for the record. Whereas now we have known, you know, instead of having known unknowns,
you have known knowns. This was this, I've brought this up before and this was in Shane Ryan's
piece as well this past week of like on the U.S. side, it is not, it is not paid to have experience.
Like, rookies have done better in terms of like it, like the, it's good to get fresh blood in,
but it's not like the best to just, you know, blood them early.
And you're going to have a great Rider Cup career necessarily is a young man's game.
Is this from the Jason Aquino, the beautiful mind, the most beautiful mind of any, you know, match play, team sport?
That sounds like your words more so than what was like editorializing.
Yeah, I don't know if like if I could.
I'll find the quote.
Okay.
You can find the quote.
Will you do that?
Do you mind even heading over the fridge and grab me another one of these?
Sure.
I want to give a shout.
I can't do that and find the quote.
That's true.
You'll have time when you get back.
I want to go shout out.
DC, fetch me a high noon.

dot com to find a pack near you high noon suns up uh should we go back to the first match um the
first match out here's the quote i got the quote who's this from this is from you or this is
Shane Ryan this is from the Shane Ryan piece about scouts saying Jason Aquino he is by far the
brightest rider president's cup mind i've encountered and he's been through the highest highs
and the lowest lows of the last decade with the American team amazing amazing
unquote considering all the all the context we have over the last decade which we do not know if
it was the fault of the stats guys in a keynote or if it was captains going rogue which based on
some of the things I've heard this week I know which way I lean on that one okay but why would the
captains go rogue because they don't believe in their stats guys that's the fault of the captains
they don't know what they're doing yeah they clearly don't know what they're doing but i was going
to say isn't it interesting uh tc i i think i'm with you
On the like, I just want new blood.
I just want new blood.
Isn't it funny how that's the complete opposite of team Europe and and how galvanized they are around like their lions.
And like if you put J.T. in like a blue shirt, everybody, everybody would be like that's savvy reincarnate.
Like he's that's what it's all about this.
It means more to him.
And it's just, it is funny like with US fans, JT, myself occasionally included.
J.T. kind of has to battle that.
just like, oh, fuck, enough of JT.
Come on, we got it. We got it.
And then you see it today. You're like, how, man, seven or no?
Seven and no and four ball.
In four ball.
That's, huh.
Gentlemen, good evening.
Exciting day.
I know everybody's so excited about day one here, the 26th President's Cup.
I think J.T.
It's not him personally, but he symbolizes something.
I think that's what a lot of people are going.
And he gets the brunt of a lot of BS, but he is a,
a reflection of the club.
Not so much JT specifically,
if that makes any sense at all.
Like, do you guys understand where I'm going with that?
Like the idea of JT?
He's kind of the spiritual leader and the team overall stinks as a macro,
so he ends up kind of feeling the brunt of that.
Very much.
On the high side and the low side.
Like he's just kind of that.
And that's unfair.
Totally get it.
Dej.
And I think that kind of goes with what you're saying of like,
why does it not make sense?
Because he always is like the guy.
but he's also the easiest one to pin everything to.
Well, it's just funny.
It's like if you were building,
let's just say we're blown up the whole system
and you were designing your dream American team cup player,
like, I would look a lot like JT.
Like almost exactly like JT.
He's got all the shots.
Yeah.
If I could just take a little bit of that JT
and put them into like the number one player in the world,
Scotty Schaeffer in these.
Oh my goodness.
Then we'd be cooking boys.
JT's nine, six, and two in Rider Cups,
and he has moved to.
to 11, 3, and 2 in President's Cup.
So combined that's 29 and 4 in U.S. team events,
which was probably the best effort for any American in history.
Little juiced by the President's Cup, like a lot of guys, like a lot of guys do.
But also playing with a bunch of different guys and, you know.
I will say I was super disappointed in him today.
They made him put a put on the second hole from two feet, 10 inches.
I clocked this and he would be upset about this.
And he did not do the move.
He did that.
But that's the reason that why like,
for sure.
A lot of people hate him.
For sure.
He's mature.
But I think that might be what makes him an American like
rototype though.
Like he.
Yeah.
The president's cup needs that shit.
It's like when,
who was the guy,
Wojo,
the,
the old Duke guard that would like bang the floor and,
you know,
and everybody hates Duke.
And it's like,
you know,
but yeah,
but they're good.
And like that's,
that's kind of the J.T.
thing.
You know,
I think J.T.
is more Duke's J.
JJ Reddick.
Like that verse,
like,
yeah.
The difference, though,
is like people,
like Duke fans absolutely ride for it.
Like,
I don't,
there are J.T.
fans,
but there's not,
like,
there's not a bunch of huge diehard,
like JT's my guy people out there.
Unless I'm wrong.
I don't know.
Like,
guy,
he doesn't have like the picture perfect history here either.
Okay.
Sure.
For people that are riding for JT all the time,
you got to,
there's some highs and lows you got to go through to get there.
I was going to say he kind of lost his game.
a little bit like on this whole like his his team match play career is very much the most steady
thing in his entire career and everything else is kind of gone like this and dege to your
point like there's not ride or die j t fans really but are they really like ride or die u.s fans
i know that's what i'm saying yeah exactly i think a lot of people still hold 2023 over jt like
that you know he went one and two it wasn't that big of a disaster but
but and Speed anchored him.
But I think people thought he shouldn't have been on that team
and he didn't have a winning record of that one in the U.S. loss.
And I think that that carries, somehow carries more weight
than the rest of the record he has.
But we, yeah, we don't.
Last thing on us,
but there's only one guy that makes anybody feel anything.
I think that's correct.
You should be on the team to you.
You should get him on the team.
Uh,
he would put back in fucking Xander.
He's technically fresh blood at this point.
Exactly.
New blood.
He's coming back around.
He's blood spitting.
He's back around.
Last thing on JT, I promise.
The bunker shot he hit on 13 will not be on any highlight reels.
But if you've seen this hole, it's like kind of a redany hole.
It's kind of weird little slope to the right of the screen.
There's a bunker that if you go deep into to the front right pin today,
you are beyond toast, like absolutely toast.
And he hit this bunker shot that was one of the, like,
the crispest sounding bunker shots I've ever heard.
And the trajectory, I don't know if I can never recall a trajectory of a bunker shot going as straight up as it did.
It ended up hitting the collar of the fringe and shooting forward way past the hole.
But there was an audible, like, oh, sound that came from like the international captains.
The guy's sitting around the cart near me when it happened.
And Corey Conner just hit right after that and hit it way past the hole as well.
But it was like, it was wild to see like professional golfers freak out about a shot that another professional golfer hit today.
Listen, I want to see J.T. and who's he playing with tomorrow?
Cameron Young.
Cam Young.
I like that.
I want to see him, like, you know, after they beat Corey Connors and Nico, like, I don't, I'm not, I'm not going to pat him on the head for pooping in the potty today.
I want to see.
But J.
Yeah, not literally, but J.T. almost beat both of those guys.
Which DJ had a great idea.
This was an R&D.
I don't know if this was ready for the big show, but, but piss off like Trevor R.man and the entire shield.
This is just a blue sky whiteboard.
Anything's possible.
Maybe some of these matches should be too.
one is what I was going to say watching JT play with like with Coyvin just in his pocket I was like
oh this is actually pretty thrilling stuff and if it was if you had like call it one match per session
was like one of the four ball matches was just you can throw out Scotty he's just going to play
his own ball by himself scottie might be better playing his that's what I'm saying I think it'd be
compelling well let's get to that match this was the first match out minwoo lee sung j M
versus Scotty and sam burns as I understand
understand it, the U.S. deferred the opening pick. And so the international's had to go first,
which I think is obviously an interesting wrinkle of this of who put, who put, you know,
their team up against the other two guys. So Min Wu and Sunjay out first. Snetiker goes with
Scottie and Sam Burns, number one and number two ranked players in the world, I believe,
in Data Golf, maybe just for this event. I think that was just the top two players. But
tight match all the way through. Scotty birded the opening hole, put the U.S. one up.
They never had a bigger lead than that. Scotty and Sam actually.
birdied the first four holes but he scotty did not make another birdie after the third
hole sung jay birdied three four and five to tie it back up um and then he birdied the 13th hole
that put the internationals one up burns bounce back with a birdie on 14 uh and sungay
inexplicably three putted de green himself on 17 i mean it was a gnarly pin there on the left
on 17 but he three putted from a spot he should not be three putting from uh and that put
the internationals won down. Scotty hit in a
green side bunker on 18. Both Scotty and
Sam Burns hit in green side bunkers on 18,
but Scottie got it up and down easily
from the front right bunker to secure a par.
Sunjay had a long birdie put that
lived out and missed and the internationals lost
that one one up. The numbers
from this one look a lot better than I think it
felt probably watching on TV
in terms of it
seemed like there was a pretty strong
sentiment against this Scotty
and Burns pairing.
Scottie, just the two birdies, Sam Burns had four.
Scotty was plus 1.33 today.
Burns plus 2.93.
Minwo struggled.
He only had two birdies and he was in the negative on strokes gained.
Sung Jay had four birdies and was two strokes gained overall.
But some of the best golf was actually played in this match.
And this was most of the golf that was on TV today.
But it just didn't, it doesn't sound like the eye test was really supporting a lot of that.
I know you probably got to watch more on TV than we did.
But what was what did you gather from that match?
Good to see Sam Burns shed some of the like, just San Burns stink sort of, sort of stuff.
You know, I think like seeing him play much more like himself at one of these team events was, was good for, you know, those of us that like to watch Sam Burns play golf.
Man, I don't mean this.
T.C., you know how much I don't want to say this.
Min Wu Lee, I just don't think he's good at golf.
Take it all away.
I don't think he hits good golf shots.
I know he's got a great personality.
He takes to social media.
I think he fooled me.
I started flipping, you know, last year, what was it?
Like pebble, he played well or something like that.
Where I was like, oh, he looks like he's kind of playing a little bit more real golf.
He's starting to flight shots.
He's starting to hit off speed pitches.
It just, it doesn't look good, man.
I don't know.
It's just not, not for me.
Take it away.
No box for me, please.
No leftovers.
Couldn't agree more.
Yeah, Andrew Orville.
The movie is a Savannah banana is a pretty withering take, but hard.
I'm not going to bring the leftovers home with me.
You can box them up, but I'm not bringing him home with me.
I'm just like, like you said, he's not for me.
I don't think he's a proper player.
It feels like a really, really, it's just overrated to me.
I'm just not, I'm just not like in just hitting poor shots in the moment when you need
him to hit a good one.
Yeah.
I think about your, uh, your, uh, your,
your line you said about Sam Burns last year
where he's like he's the best putter in the world
until it's time to make putts.
And it's, I feel a little bit like that
with Min Woo Lee. It's like, yeah, no,
I think he's got all the shots until it's time to hit him.
And then he like just kind of disappears.
Yeah, the Min Woo thing just feels unsurious.
And like this feels a little,
this feels a lot like Scotty and Sam Burns
would have lost this match in the Ryder Cup.
Yeah.
That's exactly how this felt.
It felt like they did not play good enough.
or they played poor enough to give the internationals enough of an opportunity to take the match,
like to just step on their throat and do it.
And the internationals did not do it.
And it just seems like something they would never get away within the Ryder Cup.
It just, that was the exact.
We don't have to do the question of like, why does this work in the President's Cup
and not work in the Ryder Cup?
It's because the opponent.
Like, that's entirely what it is.
Like, that's the answer.
And this match was that exact example.
Like, I do not think that one of a half in the Ryder Cup.
up, I think that would have been a three and two loss probably.
They were playing a directional Michigan today instead of a road SEC.
That's a little unfair.
Sung Jay played pretty darn well.
He didn't, you know, didn't putt very well.
Dude, Sunjjay almost missed the ball off the first tee.
That was sick.
That was horrible.
They had another one where he like almost dropped the club.
He like boned it up there like six feet.
It was.
It's weird because Sunjj was a weird team to put out first, I thought.
Almost opposite of, of, of,
Minwu, Sung-J
seems like the worst good player in the world.
He's like...
Yeah, 100%.
Like he has the shots and he's really, really solid.
He just doesn't seem to have any feel.
Well, his, I mean, his iron play was really, really good when he was coming up.
And it has not been good over the last couple of years.
Off the Grand Canyon.
Like very, very bad.
It got better again this year, though, right?
A little bit, I think.
I'd have to check that.
But my point being, today, he was the best in the field.
strokes gained approach by over a shot.
Like he was the best iron player.
He just let himself down and his team down on the greens.
But he, Tita Green, was the best player of all 20 that played today with Sung J.M.
Which, man, those are two, I guess,
counteracting myself.
Interesting team to throw out first because if they do go out and play great golf,
like they do seem like two of your big like momentum guys.
You know, like if Sung Jay and Min Wu Lee are out there,
like doing stuff and and bring an energy.
Like I think that can only be only be good for the squad.
There are two,
two players that I like,
I enjoy watching.
I just, man,
you see him hit a lot of bad shots.
Weird,
uh,
question here from at Brad Schaeffler.
I don't know if there is any relation here and it's spelled the same.
The Brad.
Even with the win parentheses somehow.
At what point do we scrap the Schephler burned pairing?
They are one, three and one now together.
This was their first win in, what, five matches between President's Cups and Rider Cups together.
They hadn't, believe it or not, they had not played a match together since the 2023 Ryder Cup.
They didn't play together last year at Bethpage and did not play together in Montreal.
That was, Scotty was playing more with Russ Henley.
But what, what do we're not, we're not wrapping tomorrow.
They're going out first again tomorrow.
Correct.
They're out.
Do we think we're going to ride this out for all four team matches?
Are they going to try to see what they have with this pairing?
They try to turn their mojo around.
It's, I don't know.
I don't know what it is, man.
There's just something.
To your point, to age, Sam Burns played really well today.
But Scotty, just like, I don't, I feel like I'm on first take when I say this.
But like, does he care?
Like, does he really care about this?
Like, he just seems like he shows up at these events not sharp.
and I get that it's different and it's a different routine and it's match play,
but it just doesn't seem to bother him that he doesn't really have his best stuff.
It's the same thing we used to say about Tiger.
I know.
It feels very familiar.
It feels very familiar.
But isn't that, gosh, I feel like that should almost be, I don't know,
that should almost be like comforting instead of concerning in a way, right?
Where it's like there's a, there's a reason why they're so fucking wired to win individual
golf tournaments like that.
And to me, it's almost like, I don't know.
it's almost kind of charming. It's almost kind of charming that he like has that same problem as Tiger
at these events. Like he just clearly has the recipe. He's not going to deviate it ever. He doesn't
deviate like we say this all the time where it's like when he shows up to the British Open or
he shows up to the Byron Nelson. It like, man, it looks like he's doing the exact same stuff.
He's there to win. And I just almost wonder if that's incompatible with all the like, let's go
hang in the team room and let's go, let's go do this. And come on. Are you showing enough emotion?
We do, should we have a silly handshake?
Should we, should we, should I pump up the crowd after I make this?
Like, I wonder if, I don't know.
I'm with you.
You start to feel like Stephen A. Smith or something, but it's, that can't be a coincidence.
Could they send them out?
Those are the, that, like, struggle from this weird syndrome.
Yeah.
Could they send him out solo?
It's interesting.
Like, I'm, I get through tomorrow.
Get through tomorrow.
I love that.
It could.
I mean, if he's not.
not going to be good in team events, the U.S. will lose the next five rider cups.
Like there's no path to victory for the U.S. in the Ryder Cup without it being good in.
Put that, put that in the paper.
Sali does not see a path to victory in the next five rider cups.
It's going to be a decade of dominance for Europe.
Exactly.
Long way to go, of course, in this event.
I don't know.
What I don't think is true, what I don't think is true is like, oh, he doesn't, he doesn't care.
He's not trying.
Like, that's just not, I don't get that vibe from him at all.
Like I don't mean I just think that's like they're I think a lot I've never thought anybody of these guys don't care about it.
But how do I say it?
They're not they don't seem to be interested in doing taking all the right steps to making sure their game is as sharp as it should be for this tournament.
Like I think he would rightfully so like cares a lot more about getting in shape for the rider cups or I'm sorry for the major championships and things like that.
And this is a fun exhibition event.
And they want to play well.
They like to play well.
But like him and Xander,
we'll get to that match next.
Just kind of seemed like they showed up pretty not sharp.
Just not anywhere near the level of consistency that we would expect to see.
I know it's one round.
And I know it's again,
quite first takey.
But it's just,
it's impossible not to get that vibe when you're not bringing any different kind of energy
than what you bring to a Thursday at a Byron Nelson.
That's,
that's the easy narrative way we get.
So that kind of hot take, I guess.
Thinking out loud.
Well, I guess circling back to your original question, like, I don't think that that all of a sudden changes if it's like, okay, well, we're going to shake it up and put you out with Jacob Bridgman.
We're going to shake.
We're going to put you out with.
Like, I know he played well with Henley, I guess, but it's like.
Not really Beth Page, but yeah.
Like the Sam Burns thing just doesn't bother me as much.
And I think they're going to probably beat the shit of those guys tomorrow.
Question for you, Sully.
Is it a pairing thing or is it Scotty's level of, like, enthusiasm?
that really drives you here.
It's a, can I say neither?
Like, I don't, I don't think it's the enthusiasm.
It's just like, we've seen you play a lot of matches in these events,
and you do not look like the number one player in the world in those events.
And that's not an enthusiasm thing.
It's just like, I just would, as a fan of the U.S. team,
I would like to see him show up and be like, oh, good fucking luck beating this guy.
Like, instead he looks quite human.
Like, he looks very human in these events.
And this is through one session.
He might hit the gas pedal.
He might go five and O this week.
He very well could.
But I just, I would like to see like, oh, shit,
there's no way you're beating that guy,
that version of Scotty.
Spitballing here.
Ready.
Because I'm thinking about it in contrast to, say, Rory.
Or some of these other European guys that, you know,
Johnny Rombo, that they show up to the Ryder Cup,
they're ready to rock.
You think some of it's truly just because Scotty's golf year
is so focused on February through July or February through August and he truly
shuts it down shuts it down and and totally versus so many of those guys they play the
race to Dubai they play Abu Dhabi they play all the DP World Tour events down the stretch and
and stay they stay ready and then they and then they kind of shut it down a little bit more
January February yes this year yes and I have to think back on it but
I forget what year that was.
Was it Rome,
Ryder Cup?
He went out and played Silverado.
I remember that.
Like,
he played in between FedEx Cup and then.
But to your point,
like,
that is a,
you know,
ever since the playoffs
have started rapping earlier
and earlier and avoiding football,
I think that does not play
into the U.S.'s hands.
That can sound like an excuse,
if you want.
It shouldn't be like figure out a way around that obstacle.
But that's not nothing.
I don't think that's a crazy thing to spitball about.
I mean,
he's still playing.
I mean,
he's beating the shit.
out of Siwu in Dallas still.
It might not be like, you know,
four round
professional events somewhere,
but I understand the edge that you're
looking for for some reason
is gone in these events.
And that is the sad part
about it. Like, why?
It doesn't really make sense.
I'm correct.
I mean, and I hope this is the case,
we could be singing a different tune tomorrow
if it's like, ah, okay, now he's back.
You know, and it could, especially after Saturday,
we might be could be saying that it's a fun Thursday over a reaction also his superpower is a
is 72 whole stroke play event and stepping on someone's neck over four rounds instead of over
14 holes he needs to play tom cam I think I think he needs to be in that to get a little little fire
up under him uh I want to give a shout out to our friends at holdness and born the fall collection
has been absolute fire uh I've been so influenced every time I see something it's the hoodie of the
year the TCs got on I just go
to our website and grab it.
I have,
which one is this one?
You have the Ellison hoodie on right now.
That's the Jackson.
This is the Jackson.
That's actually,
that was last,
still,
they got great fall stuff.
I can't get it enough.
I got the vest as well.
Do you remember,
you know what the name of the vest is?
I don't,
but that's the Ivy.
Okay,
Ivy color.
Ivy color.
They got awesome colors.
Great purples,
great green.
We'll see a lot of this.
Got a nice polo on.
Yeah,
this was,
this was coming up as well.
I got an erration polo on,
too.
Amazing stuff.
They got new arrival.
the new colors are inspired by the landscape, the color,
and the coastline of Northern California.
Your favorites are there, plus a whole lot more.
At HBGolf.com, you can put in code NLU10.
That gives you 10% off.
It is still the only discount code anywhere on the market for Holderness and Borg.
HBGolf.com, code NLU10.
They have so much great stuff.
I've been wearing their corduroy pants.
That's been an absolute, I got the blue and the khaki.
Solid, to use your words, you've been wearing that shit.
Thank you.
that shit on.
Okay.
But thank you.
That really means a lot.
On to match number two,
Hideki Matsuyama,
Rio Hizatsune,
against Cam Young and Xander Shafley.
Cam Young birdied the second hole
that put the U.S.
one up at Rio,
bounced back,
birdied the next hole to tie it.
Cam and Zander both bogey,
the eighth hole,
hit it in the water or hit it down the bank.
I forget which balls get held up,
but which don't.
They fell at one down,
and they stayed down
the rest of the way Hadeki birdied the ninth hole to put them two up.
Internationals would go on to win that one three and one.
Everybody in the group had three birdies except for Xander.
He only had two.
Cam was a strong player on the U.S. side plus 1.88, but Zander was in the negatives.
Rio was also in the negatives, but Hadeki was very, very solid plus 2.46 strokes gain today.
So first point on the board came from that group, Hadeki and Rio.
He's at Sune.
First time
Dekke's ever had a Japanese partner.
They can finally talk to each other.
That was the big storyline.
It is, yeah, I don't know.
I know this has been beat to death,
but it is, it's funny when you hear things like,
you know, why is this,
just why do you think this event is so lopsided?
And then you hear that on the first seat.
It's like, oh, this is the first time he's had a partner
that speaks his language.
It's like, wow, maybe that's part of it.
That's kind of be a little, a little bit tough
to come together as Steve, but it seems like
They're doing.
Sebastian Munoz.
Yeah.
They're doing literally everything they can to try to make it work.
But that is, that's a tough, it's a tough one.
But, uh, he sat Sune was so fun to watch, man.
He just lashes at the ball and his like, outrageous golf swing.
Uh, I just, I had a blast watching, watching those two.
Glad they, glad they got it done.
Yeah, that's right.
He's sitting tomorrow.
Unfortunately, it will be a long weekend for him.
But, yeah, I'm not sure if that was.
that was part of the plan.
You know,
again,
his numbers didn't end up looking great,
but they ended up being a strong pairing.
A lot of,
got a lot of,
I didn't get to watch a lot of this match,
but got a lot of negative comments about Zander today.
And every clip that I did see,
just seemed like kind of a one-handed finish
or some pretty non-zander-like iron play for the majority today.
Slow.
Yeah.
Yeah, just not,
not sharp.
Yeah,
he was almost negative two shots approach today,
alone, which this is a second shot golf course.
Yeah.
He is, who is he playing with tomorrow?
We'll get to all this and lay off.
Can't lay, I believe.
That's right, of course.
L. Yeah.
T.C. will be with that match.
I hope that one's going off last.
Lock up, lock up Ige, boys.
As mentioned, the third match was Connors and Etrierea versus JT and Jackson Coyvin.
US won that one, four and three.
Fourth match out, Ryan Fox and Adam Scott against Windham Clark and Colin Moracawa.
Your guy, Dub, held this one down, T.C.
Dub looked great.
This one hurt my heart.
Foxy looked bad.
Adams, they just, just did, just totally flaccid pairing today.
And that should have been their, their bread and butter.
So I think we got to split those guys up and figure something out.
I feel like we got to, I don't know.
I don't know what's going on there.
It's just, I feel like you got to put Foxy with a, with a, like, you know,
somebody else, a better potter.
Foxy's with Minwu Lee tomorrow.
Which, I don't know.
Maybe they can vibe,
maybe they can vibe with each other.
Who knows?
Yeah, foursome.
I mean,
for some,
like this is what,
forsoms was five and no last year,
or last go around.
Internationals did go five and no in Montreal.
That was a home,
you know,
President's Cup.
I would be very surprised that it went five and oh on the road
tomorrow as well.
But what,
yeah,
your reports were just,
that Foxy didn't have it today.
What was, what was he?
I only saw him once.
He almost hit it.
Apparently there's in course out of bounds on 10.
If you hit into 11 fairway or inside that rope line,
I was told, I don't know if that's true,
that that is potentially,
he almost did hit it out of bounds over there.
It was the only time I saw him today,
and it was almost by accident.
It looked like,
it's just like he was out of sorts.
Like the iron,
like he's,
I think some of it, he plays fast.
It was really slow out there.
They were fourth group out.
They were waiting.
and I think it was as much like Wyndham just played really well.
He was solid all day and had a certain lightness about him.
It was kind of just bouncing around and gliding around and smiling.
I got to give Wyndham credit.
Every time I saw him in the practice rounds, he was doing that exact thing.
He was a leader and going it straight up to the kids and signing for them.
And just I heard him.
I don't know what was said before it, but just kind of needling Jackson Coivin
when they were putting around on the ninth green it was like he was almost like a uh an upperclassman
in a fraternity like hazing a pledge in some way just kept calling him rook uh but like in a in a
kind of an endearing way so it's been nothing but positive vibes from wind him and that putter is a
weapon and he made every time i he popped up on the screen i was watching something on my phone
was out there every time he popped up it seemed like he was making a 12 to 15 footer today
he uh to your earlier comments allie he had
He had some comments about not feeling the fans out there.
So I don't know what was going on,
but it couldn't really feel the energy out there.
Hopefully they get it turned around this weekend,
which I don't say that as a slight to win them.
I think that's just,
that's an interesting takeaway,
especially when you're up three to two.
Maybe it was a commentary that he wasn't feeling the negative energy.
I was going to say, yeah,
there were some comments about that.
Maybe it was just different than what he's usually,
usually getting it.
I do not think it's too late for them to move some of the rope lines
on some of these holes.
I do not see why they cannot do that.
Why don't you be the change you wish to see?
I'm trying.
You should just start moving stakes.
I'm putting this out to hundreds of thousands of people tonight, T.C.
Let's get on it, PGA Tour.
Let's get this atmosphere up, man.
This is one of your Super Bowls.
This is the players, man.
It's all we hear about all year long.
Like, let's capture the energy.
They do this so well in so many places.
That's the part that I feel like we always compliment them and say operationally.
They get so much stuff right year round.
I just was kind of stunned to see this one in particular be.
And this is an exhibition.
Like it,
you got to have the fans on top of,
on top of the green.
And you're only moving 24 guys or,
yeah,
20 guys around the course today.
Yeah.
So,
just, yeah,
putting a pin on that,
Wyndham plus 2.61,
Colin minus 1.4 or 5 today.
It was not great.
Did put the,
put the match away with a great approach
into the 16th hole,
the par three.
and birdied that one for the official three and two victory.
So, yeah, just one birdie for Adam Fox or for Ryan Fox today.
Three bodies from Adam Scott, but not the strongest pairing there.
Final match out, Tom Kim, Siwu Kim versus Chris Goderup, Patrick Cantley.
The internationals win this one, three and two.
Goddrop and Cantley both had three birdies, but they did, I believe, lose a few holes with some bogeys.
Tom Kim made three birdies.
Siwu Kim made four birdies.
Tom Kim was what he does in this event was almost three full shots gained today
and was one of the best players in the entire field.
I believe second best player in the entire field today.
Tom, him.
Yeah.
He looked great.
Pretty joyless, pretty joyless looking pairing from the U.S. there,
which we had KLA and Goddard.
Just didn't look like they were having a good time.
Yeah, that's a strange one.
Weird pairing.
Like I feel like Goddor of somebody, like you want to pair him with somebody he's going to be
able to vibe off of.
I thought the Cam Young,
Cam Young,
uh,
speculation was a fun one.
Yeah.
And then yeah,
Tom Kim and Siwu just looked like they were having fun out there.
You know,
I know Tom Kim's boy,
Sally,
he was doing this little,
he thing.
Even him today was,
it was such a half-hearted,
it was,
it was like,
I,
you know,
nobody's,
it doesn't work out there.
Like,
these are good,
these are nice fans.
These are like good Midwestern people.
They're like knowledgeable golf fans.
They're like knowledgeable golf fans.
It was so pleasant.
polite out there and and like there's there's no haters and and too like a lot of people turned out like
it was it was big energy now you know it's a big grandstand around one like by the end as
cody flashes his image of a friend sent me this one nobody sticking around for the for the final
group but yeah in the first tee there were some open seats in the you know the final few pairings but
we've seen that with other president's cups as well but um yeah it's Neil Neil's guys from
What's the company?
Forvis.
I don't know.
One of these new sponsors that,
one of these three companies that nobody's ever heard.
Neil will be on the show tomorrow.
You can break it all that.
He's got a full report.
Yeah.
Ready for that one.
But.
Forvis Mazars.
Just a couple,
couple other notes.
I love the 12th hole,
the normal 16th hole,
kind of highly documented.
All the T was up on that one today.
The little bit that I did.
of it was great.
It was so fun.
It was by far the highlight of the,
of the broadcast.
I mean,
it was like every time that hole came on,
your,
your eyes perked up.
It was like,
I mean,
I'm sure you felt this
as you're walking around there,
Sallie,
but like going back to the par three's
that they did have there,
what it was like 13 and 17 or whatever,
it used to be,
12 and 17 or whatever.
13 and 17 was right.
And just the kind of mirror image
or identical part three is,
seeing the way that they use that ridge line
and that kind of inlet of the,
lake and all it's just like oh yeah duh obviously like obviously this is 50 times better than what
was there before and like bendelo might have been AI he might have been might have had some
cookie cutters out there uh but yeah it was just great man and like you said you're when even if
it's on the right line like your eye never leaves you know your eye doesn't leave the screen until the
ball comes down because it might not might get spinning it might get beat up by the wind you
don't know what's going to happen uh who knows what kind of lie you're going to get in that
It was like, it was just great.
Really, really fun variety of shots on display there.
The highlight of it for me, it was a short, driveable-ish four that made you think one and just
hitting it up near the green was not it.
Like you had to hit a good shot in a good spot or you paid a price.
And it was not a gimmie birdie just hitting it up close to the green.
That was like the Coyven shot.
Coyven hit an excellent T shot that, you know, was probably 45 yards.
I could check the exact yard that he was.
in the fairway, able to spin it easily. JT. had just pulled his just left of the bunker,
had to deal with a big mound on the backside of a bunker, ended up carrying it too far,
crept onto the green, but didn't take a slope and get down. Like he paid a price for hitting
a, you know, not that much worse he shot than Coyvin did, but it was worse. And after
Nico Echabria hit it in the water, Corey Connors had to take three wood, lay up and play way back.
He had a really nice shot in there and made the birdie, if I remember right, as well.
and they have that hole, but it was just, it was good, good, good match play hole.
I hope they keep that tee up for, and the win played made it made that shot really interesting today as well.
That's a good just standing behind 11, like I stood behind 11 green today and you can see so much.
You see 11 green.
You see that that par three earlier on.
You see across the 12.
You can see 13.
Like it's, it's made for viewing.
I think they just got to figure out how to maximize it.
I think it's going to take a couple of reps here to figure out how to maximize it.
Yeah, got a lot of questions on where, you know, I'm going this weekend,
where should we go, where should we post up?
I thought seven green was the first good spot to watch from in terms of there's some places to sit there.
And there's a part three and there's a TV screen there.
So if you're looking to get ahead of the action, you can watch a bunch of the golf on TV as they get up there.
Because as I mentioned, those first six holes could be some really tough viewing.
I think parking on seven watching that part three is a good spot.
because of the screen. That's always my advice for these team events. Get somewhere ahead
where you can actually watch something on the screen and that time's going to go a lot faster.
Also, shout to AT&T, if I may say the connection out there was great. That's some of the best
cell service I've ever had and I was able to live stream all of the golf out there. So if you got
YouTube TV as well, you can watch it on your phone as your waiting for groups come through.
There's a big grove of oaks back in that area as well. It's like nice shade trees and stuff.
There's a good grandstand behind the 10th green and there's a ton of hospitality on that
whole as well. But if you're looking for a spot to just post up and watch groups come through,
10 is not bad there. Grand stand behind 13T, the par 3 gives you a good view of 12 as well.
You can see all the action happening on 12 and you can see the T shots right in front of you on 13
and you can easily see to 13 green as well or some decent viewing spots.
But again, if you're trying to follow matches, it's going to be very difficult out there to see
a lot of action. So getting to a good spot and posting up and watching the golf come through,
I think is a good option.
I got a shout out some of the food out there.
I wasn't expecting it to go this hard.
Wasn't familiar with your game.
There's an area called the Loop over off of kind of one and 18 over on the east side of the property.
Bub City.
Barbecue local barbecue spot.
I didn't know they did barbecue much in Chicago.
Some of the best brisket I've had in years.
How about it?
Awesome brisket, awesome burgers over there.
They did great.
and then Beach, this knocked my socks off.
I didn't know Sweet Baby Rays was a Chicago company.
I think I just took it for granted.
I always had it in the house.
I don't even think I've ever put two to together.
I was thinking of myself, like, this is,
oh, that's kind of tacky.
They had a sweet baby raise thing amongst all these local places.
And then I was like, wait, sweet baby raise from just outside Chicago.
Just outside Chicago.
Billy Goat Tavern had a Chicago hot dog from there, which was great.
They had the Italian beef, all that.
And then pizza portofino over there.
You would have loved that.
They had a hot honey pepperoni pizza that was great.
There's a little buffalo trace area over there.
The whole, it was very, very thoughtfully done as far as the local food offerings.
And this is a great food city.
And people were just grazing all along.
And I walked over to the merch town after that.
Dejj, I almost bought you a Taylor Pendrith, Jersey.
Yeah, I saw those going around.
I might, I'll be out there Saturday, Sunday.
I might have to see if we got any left.
Good luck.
To get it on eBay.
I could not find just like a simple, like I just wanted a hat that had the shield on it.
Couldn't find one that was.
Don't you have like 30 of them?
I've got two of them.
I've worn them so much though that they're all beaten up.
I see.
Just this is barely a question, but Ryan Fusco Golf sent us this one.
Are they going to make Sam Burns play with Christian Polisick again tomorrow?
I thought that was a great.
That was a great dig.
Take that shit away.
Yeah, but it was a good, that's a good tweet.
No point.
No points for being clever.
That's just, that's, that's glib.
TGL NSEL, of course, had a great tweet today.
Always.
He said, is the Zander app down for anybody else?
That one got me, that one got me good.
I like this one.
You guys probably missed this, but when Snedz was talking about how he wanted everybody
got there be savages.
This was the one from the Blue T-Pod.
TC's top five savages from day one.
No, there were no savages.
It was, it was, it was extremely civilized,
both inside and outside the ropes.
I mean, you can give some golfers, some savage, savage award.
There was some savage golf out there.
JT was a savage.
J.C. was for sure.
A savage.
He was a savage.
Tom, Tom Kim, Tom Kim.
Savage.
Dub.
It sounds like the, it sounds like the broadcast was pretty savage.
Yeah.
Marshall Lowe was savage.
I think they had already lost track of things.
There's like two groups on the course.
They're like four balls in play and they lost track.
And yeah, I don't, of course, never like being the guy that jumps on it right away.
But like, it's fresh week.
It's a new week.
It's a new PGA tour.
It's Brian Rolap's first president's cup.
Like maybe they'll come out of the gate a little different.
Like maybe they will.
They did not.
They did not.
We don't have to harp much on it tonight.
I will say pretty sharp rise in ratings in terms of what the listeners think.
I just ran the question earlier.
How's the broadcast so far?
Satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
We had 3,633 votes up to almost 18% satisfactory up from 7 at the U.S. Open.
So I think that you get more than 3,000 responses with those 5 million followers.
You bought.
I think that one got suppressed pretty good.
by the alco, I think.
We are,
the good news is I believe they are getting,
I think Sky is playing just the straight NBC,
or the straight golf channel broadcast.
And so our,
our UK British fans are getting a full glimpse of what we.
I hope they're not watching this.
I hope they,
like your players are not playing in it.
And you should not have to watch.
Watch the French Open.
Yeah.
Hank,
I,
all right.
How?
this is a live sporting event that is not traded like a live sporting event with the telecast we've been through that
you have the cock how is there no feature groups like match play is the best to watch like a feature like
you're filming all the shots anyway you're filming the shots and you're just not giving them to the public like you cannot watch
the match like sunday nfl is really interesting because you could sit and watch in this example like the
to Apple's comparison, like five different football games.
If you want to, you can choose what you want to watch.
Why wouldn't you be able to watch this game, this match?
Like there's 30 of these over the entire week.
You have no idea how contracts works.
I don't, apparently.
Like, but I feel like there was a previous world where we got to watch feature
group matches in Rider Cups and President's Cups.
And I don't know how we went backwards from this.
I really don't.
Like, it would be the only way to take in one of these events.
And if people are paying for your premium product,
how are you offering zero and it's on the pGA tour too like how are you offering zero premium
viewing options for this and we're just stuck watching whoever the official pharma company is of
the president's cup commercials on repeat like fuck man god how much i fucking hate that mercedes commercial
which just feels like he's written by ai just good things come to those who wait but great
things come to those who don't or something like that like that doesn't even make sense guys
No, you guys aren't even trying.
What are we doing?
Straight down the middle.
They kept playing that again today, too.
Sally, we used to have the fanatics.
We don't know what happened with the fanatics.
Were they in Montreal?
I don't remember if they were in Montreal.
But they're not here.
And they were missed.
I don't know if it was part of the budget cuts from the PGA tour.
But you were saying,
Fanatics are in the Hague.
They got, they got,
take an international court.
Luke LV bought the fanatics.
I said he should join the fanatics.
Yeah, they're key ten.
a Live 2.0.
The Fanatics should
become a live franchise.
What if the fanatics are one of the
aggrieved parties in the Liv
lawsuit?
They're just owed a bunch of money.
It might be.
The fanatics are actually the ones
doing the flash mob.
They might have been.
Someone needs to get on that.
What happened to the fanatics?
Matches tomorrow, Scotty.
I'm embedded with the fanatics for a day
to ever tell you guys about that?
Yeah.
Oh my gosh.
That's for two.
tomorrow's episode. What a weird one.
Tomorrow's matches in foursome Scotty and Sam Burns against Corey Connors and Nick Taylor.
Nick Taylor. I want to see it tomorrow, big boy. Come on.
What do we, what do we, all right. So I like following the strategy of how this goes.
Scotty and Burns were put up first, best pairing probably on the U.S. side,
least mathematically. What do you do if you're Ogilvy there? I swear I thought I saw him wince a little bit as he named these two players to go up against them.
Is this is the strategy here to put maybe theoretically your fifth best team, your worst team out against their best team?
And it almost is sacrificial lambs in this one because it kind of feels that way.
I mean, if you're Ogilvy, are you convinced that Scotty and Sam are going to be playing the right holes?
It's a good question.
It's a really good question.
God damn it.
That's so stupid.
It's a valid question.
I'm trying to find if there's if there's odds yet.
I do.
I mean, I know I kind of sharded on this,
sharded on this team earlier and said that Scotty and Sam
were going to beat the shit out of these guys.
But they do seem like one of the more steady teams
on the international side.
I mean, I don't think like,
I know Corey Collins can't putt,
but I don't know if they're going to,
they're not going to like be out of a lot of holes.
I don't think.
So I guess maybe the thinking is they just kind of,
I don't, yeah, I don't know,
Sully, maybe they play steady and hopefully it's good enough,
but it doesn't seem like they've got quite the,
dry powder. This isn't backed up by anything, but like Nick Taylor, he's greater than some of his
parts. That's right. He's a, he's a gamer. Totally. I can't believe you are starting things now with
this isn't backed up by anything. You've never prefaced any of that with any of your takes.
Oh, all my takes are backed up by immense, immense belief. What is the source of this data?
I don't, I do not see live odds anywhere for for any of these.
matches.
So next up, the internationals put up Hadecki and Sung J.M.
And Brandt Stanniker matches with Russ Henley and Jacob Bridgman.
That's interesting.
It is interesting.
I kind of love that pairing for the U.S.
I don't know if that's going to help.
I don't know if that's going to help with the fan energy problem out there.
But it does seem like a very formidable duo.
I think it's interesting.
The two par fives are on the front.
and there's just a ton of like tricky par fours coming down the stretch in that in that meat of the back nine and I think that that's where the Henley Bridgman combo really steps to the forefront I think I hope they moved that they they had two T's set up on the par five six during practice rounds I hope they move that T up and that's one of the few holes out there that I didn't really fully understand just that was hard really long real par five three shes.
shotter for everybody, but not a lot of value off the tea.
It felt like I only saw one group come through it,
but I was just kind of confused when I saw that hole.
I wouldn't mind seeing that one get moved up and, you know,
a little fire put in that one.
But that was one of the worst greens viewing spots on the entire course.
That was one of the most crowned greens and one of the,
one of the kind of lowest energy spots there.
Next up, the U.S. puts up Wyndham Clark and Colin Moracawa up against Ryan
Fox and Minbush.
Wu Lee.
I'm going to take Dub and calling in that match.
Listen, I think it's too close to call.
It's too early to call this.
We got to watch and play the match.
This is a tough one for you because you're up on Foxy and way down on Minwu.
And I'm way up.
I'm way up on Dub.
Is true.
Are you a Dub respecter now, TC?
Like me?
I don't know if I'm a dub respecter or even appreciator, but I'm a dub
acknowledger.
acknowledge his career
or respect his career
um
fourth match up first
Adam Scott and Christian
Bazadenhoote against Justin
Thomas and Cam Young
Bez
guys I don't think the day is shaping up great
for the internationals it just doesn't
I agree
um lastly the U.S. puts out
Xander and Cantlay up against Tom
Kim and Siwu Kim
I think there's something there with the
the data what
like that Adam Scott, Bez feels very specific.
You know, Bez being on the team at all and just them seeing something,
I think Bez, I think there's something there that they've unlocked with that Bez, Adam Scott.
So I'm not going to, I'm not going to declare that one yet.
I will call that one.
Okay.
I will declare that one.
That is a mismatch.
And I think Bez, what they're seeing in Bez is what they were not seeing with other remaining.
options, I think is
Casey Jarvis, Green Ellis.
It just did make the cut.
I think Tom, Kim and Steve
can beat Cantlandzander, though.
Hopefully they beat him bad, too.
I would love to say,
Can't Landzander just sit all day
Saturday. I almost got the chance
for some fireworks.
I mean, if any of these are going to kind of pop,
I think JT and Cam Young will be really fun.
But that one, there's
four good ingredients there
for some interesting golf.
I think I would go,
I'm going to go.
Scotty and Burns are going to beat Conners and Taylor.
I like Hadecki and Sungay over Russ and Bridgman.
I like Dub and Colin over Fox and Minwu.
I like JT and Cam Young over Adam Scott and Christian Bazadenhot.
And I like Tom Kim and Siwu Kim over Cantlay and Zander.
So you're going three, two again.
You're going six four at the end of tomorrow.
The most dull, yeah, like results over two days that we could have.
Steady progression.
Yeah.
I might do a five team parlay on that.
We're in a state where that's legal.
I might get on that.
I think I weirdly like,
I'm really taken by that Russ Bridgman.
I know I kind of like that one too.
I think I might,
I might go 4-1 U.S.
Yeah.
I think I'm going to go Scotty and Burns,
Russ and Bridgman,
Dub and Colin,
J.T. Cam Young,
and then Tom Kim and see what Kim win the last one.
What do you think of Goddrup and Coyvin sitting on the U.S. side?
I'm fine with it.
I think,
uh,
I think you,
you sit Goddard up tomorrow and you,
you let him play both matches on Saturday.
He's going to be chomping at the bit Saturday.
Let him eat.
I know the guys can be kind of dismissive of the ball thing,
but as we mentioned,
he does play a Bridgestone ball that nobody else plays.
So maybe he is a foursum sitter throughout.
And it wouldn't surprise me if Kovin sat in foursoms again
on Saturday afternoon.
So that, yeah, those aren't that surprising.
Nico sitting, not surprising.
Rio hits out soon a sitting.
maybe a little surprising.
I don't know who the next nominee would have been,
would have been to sit,
but not an outrageous decision.
Not some of them I'm willing to first guess.
We'll second guess tomorrow.
We can definitely do that,
but not first guess.
Deeds,
to your point about Coyvin making his debut here
instead of on the first,
he had a dare manner.
Just wildly different atmosphere.
Seems like it.
The only thing with that,
though, is like it is a little bit of an awkward spot to put him in,
is in like you're kind of it's a projection of what we're premature what we think you're going to do and
he has to at least feel in some way that he hasn't earned it like a little bit i know we won of course
and has had some good results but um you know he had at least be partially surprised in some way that he got
the call right it wasn't like he beat down the door and it was like ludwig obvious 2023 should be
on the team so there's got to just be a little bit of lack of comfort in that of like man i i mean i was
just in college a few months ago and I'm on this team.
It has to be a factor in that, I think.
I mean, I think, I don't know.
I think he's a confident enough kid and world number one amateur and balled out in
the Walker Cup and all that stuff.
Like I feel like there's a body of work there that he earned this.
Yeah.
Last thing for tonight, DJ, are you ready to play?
Oh, yeah.
Let's see.
The game is called.
I know no bigger President's Cup fans than you.
The game is called.
Was this person a president's cupper?
Okay.
I've got 10 names on the American side.
We're going all the way back to the beginning.
Oh, yeah.
10, yeah, 10 names on the American side, 10 names on the international side.
And we played this last night at recess, so TC already knows the answer, so he's not allowed to participate.
But you're going to tell me if this person played in a president's cup or did not play in a president's cup.
Okay.
Okay, got it.
DJ, you're especially well qualified for this.
All right.
Yeah.
First up, Kirk Triplett did he play in a president's cup?
I'm looking at a picture of Kirk Tricklett here.
It looks like he's got a bucket hat on promoting the film The Shaggy Dog.
That's a crazy sponsorship.
Yes, I think he did play in a president's cup.
You are exactly right.
He did play in a president's cup.
Remember seeing him in one of the photos.
Next up, Jim Gallagher Jr. did he play in a president's cup?
Oh, he played in a team event for sure.
Was it a President's Cup or a Rider Cup?
I'm going to say no.
I think he played in a Ryder Cup.
He did play in a President's Cup.
He is a yes.
All right.
It was a perfect game.
Now we can swing away.
Those were the harder ones.
It does get easier here.
Brad Faxon, did he play in a President's Cup?
Yes.
Trick question.
He did not play in the President's Cup.
Yes.
Also, Jim.
Jim Gallagher Jr. also played in a Ryder Cup.
He was in the 93 team.
Yep.
All right.
Chris Riley.
He played in a President's Cup.
He did not.
Correct.
He did not.
He did play in a Ryder Cup in 2004.
Fred Funk.
Fred Funk,
he had to have played in one.
He won the players in what, like, 05?
I'm going to say yes.
He had to play.
played in one. You are correct. I think he even played in two actually, but he definitely played
in at least one President's Cup. He played in 04 Ryder Cup and back-to-back President's Cups, 03 and 05.
Well done. Chad Campbell.
Yes.
Jack Campbell did not play in a President's Cup. That's crazy. Right? Did he only play the
08 Rider Cup? He played 06 as well. He was on the Vaughn-Taylor team.
Nota baguay.
Notta baguay did play in one.
I saw a picture of him with Team USA this week.
That was that was a neat.
You saw a picture with Team USA two minutes ago
in one of the previous answers.
That's true.
Ryan Moore, did he play at a President's Cup?
I feel like this is a weird one where he, like famously played in the Ryder Cup,
but I feel like he did not play in the President's Cup.
You are correct.
He did not.
Weird.
Weird kind of alternating years.
Corey Paven.
Corey Pavin did play in a President's Cup.
You played the first one or something?
That is correct.
I think he played 94 and 96, if I remember right.
Payne Stewart.
Ooh.
Had to have.
He had to play in one.
Payne Stewart played in five Rider Cups and did not play in the Presidents Cup.
Wow.
Yeah.
That was a good bit of trivia.
That was a little a splitter there for you at the very end.
Going back to Corey Pavin, 94 and 96.
On the international side, this is where it will get fun, Dej.
The first one's a free space.
This is a gimmy for you.
Tong Chai Jai Di.
I definitely played in a president's cup.
He did.
He's not walking through that door.
No, he's not.
He did play at a president's cup.
Jeev Milka Singh.
I'm going to, man, I'm going to say no.
You are right.
Jeev Muckusing was close but did not play in a president's cup.
Was he a PJ tour member?
Wasn't he only playing the European member?
I think he was.
No, I think he was a PJ tour member.
I could be wrong there, but he was close to qualifying.
I look for people that were close to qualify.
God, when's the Jeev Malkis Singh deep dive coming out?
Matt Jones, former Ripper.
Who?
he did play in one
he did not
really
yes correct
man I thought he played like that soggy one
it
check you check that one I hope
I have that right
Matt Jones
Matt Jones
I hope I have that one right
I did put this together
I got to go through the whole
Matt Jones actor
versus Matt Jones golfer
disimpeguation
Mark McNulty
sure
yes
correct
yeah he did
you got it right exactly right i do not see any team okay other than the rippers of course of course
of course uh george cotsia uh he definitely played in one he did not play in one really yeah
i thought so too i was surprised by that one that's shocking uh kyridak abby barnat uh i feel
like he played the one at hardig park he did not play in a president's cup i was surprised by that one too
that's crazy.
Should have got him on this year's team.
Sukasa Watanabe.
God, this feels like a no-win situation.
I'm going to say, yes.
He did.
Who could forget?
It's the first time I'd ever heard that name.
He did play in a President's Cup in 1994, the very first one.
94.
How did he do?
You got the page pulled up.
Let's see.
Go to the records.
He did not play the first session.
They got trounced by Jay Haas and Scott Hoke in afternoon foursums.
He won one the next day with V.
Him and Vijay beat Haas and Hoke, three and one and four ball.
He sat the afternoon and then Jim Gallagher, Jr. beat the shit out of him in Cigils.

I love that game.
I thought it was fun.
