Hello, Neil.

It is this cold out here.

There may be no place colder on the planet.
Big delta between expectation and reality with the temps out here.
But good to be here.
My guy TC is prepared.
Hello, TC.
Florida cold.
It's Cali cold. It's Northern Cali cold. Mid Cali cold. I don't know what exactly it is. Great to be here. My guy TC is prepared. Hello TC. Florida cold. It's Cali cold.
It's Northern Cali cold, mid Cali cold.
I don't know what exactly is.
Great to be with you, Sully.

This is one of the highlights of the year
doing this show live here from the range.

or your wedding turns out just like you dreamed it would and someone making another pot of coffee in
the break room after drinking the last drop of the last one it don't get me started on that it's not
a guarantee in a world where nothing is guaranteed AT&T is bringing something new to the table AT&T
is introducing a guarantee with connectivity you can depend on, deals you want and service you deserve, or they'll make it right. So

Dej, what are we getting into today?
So I'm so glad you asked. We got so much to get into today. We're going to obviously talk
some of the big stories
of the week.
We've got some big names back in contention.
I can't wait to talk to you guys about that.
We've got some guests.
We've got some professional golf players
that are going to come through.
Maybe talk to them about their craft a little bit.
We're going to talk to our guy, Roger Steele,
everybody's favorite.
You're going to talk to him.
We've got some other guests that are going to pop in,
maybe talk a little rules.
And then the much we're going to do this. This is an entertainment thing. I don't know
if you guys know this, you bury this in the back of the show. So people stick around the
return of the belugas big board.
And how hard did you grind on this?
I spent about an entire flight from Newark to SFO working, working just emails, just,
just had all my birds out there doing stuff. Dej, I wanna know one thing.
Are you ready to guarantee
this is gonna be a powerhouse show?
I'm ready, yeah.
An NLU guarantee.
Yeah, no, I think that's an NLU guarantee, man.
Stamp it.
And let's start with just, you know,
speaking of powerhouses,
the world number one,
the unequivocal best player in the world,
Scottie Scheffler is back in contention.
Of course, had a hand injury.
He's not in contention yet.
He's just in the field.
Well, he's in contention to win a title, you know, in contention.
He's in the golf tournament.
He's in contention when he shows up.
I think he's in contention.
What are his odds right now?
Oh, I have not seen that.
That's an interesting little experiment
with coming back off injury.
I want to ask you guys this, particularly
the Schuster brothers.
So obviously everybody knows he hurt his hand.
People knew there was some glass involved.
Do you know how he actually hurt his hand?
He was in the press room yesterday talking about this.
Did you hear this?
My guess was dishwashing.
I think it's something to do with the sun.
It was not either of those things.
Which I was with you.
I thought it was a dishwasher.
Oh God, I dropped a wine glass.
No, he was making ravioli at his house
and he was at a rental house.
And so you're trying to like cut out.
This is alleged by the way.
This is straight from the horse's mouth. I mean, this is what he said. So he's like, you know, you're trying to like cut out this is a legend by the way. This is straight from the horse's mouth
I mean, this is this is what he said
So he's he's like, you know, you're trying to cut the ravioli out once you kind of layered your two layers of dough TC
I know I don't need to tell you this sure
So you take the wine glass and you're pressing down on it to cut it and the glass just shattered stem went right in wow
my
Him and so he was talking like he's like turns out
It's like a pretty common injury like people are coming out of the woodwork I should ask the party doctor about it one of these like one of my friends came in like and I don't know if the health department would have approved the ravioli. A bit like stubbing your toe where it's just like, it takes a minute for the pain to hit your brain.
Totally.
That just blew my mind.
I'm sure it was just like stubbing your toe.
Well, you know, extremity injury, it takes a minute.
That blew my mind.
But I guess, you know, setting the table.
Sure. That's good intel. I know that.
Any concerns? How are we feeling?
Soly, how are you feeling about Scotty returning?
Just looked it up on our, he's plus 400 to win the turnoff.
The next best guy is plus 1200.
Still considered the heavy favorite.
Looked the same to me hitting balls yesterday.
So I don't know exactly how long he's been back practicing and hitting balls and everything.
But I would expect to see maybe a little bit of us, just a touch.
So I probably only win by three or four.
Or he's going to be super fresh.
Yeah, very true.
I would recommend people, you know,
the transcripts are usually available online
or the press conferences.
Go watch or read what he had to say.
It's just, Neil, we've talked about this over and over.
Like the better he gets, the more,
longer he's at the mountaintop, the more interesting,
I think, he gets.
And he was looking back on his year last year
and talking about like going back and watching old rounds.
He's like, I don't watch like the end of the golf tournaments. But I watched like the middle of the
golf tournaments just to try to remember like what I was
thinking at that time and how my mind was working. And it was a
lot of like good stuff that seems like cliches about
controlling misses and you know, just hitting to the middle of
the green and like, not making bad mistakes. He's like, of
course, everybody's gonna make mistakes. He's like, the problem
is just like not making really, really bad mistakes. He's like, I didn, everybody's gonna make mistakes. He's like, the problem is just like not making really, really bad mistakes. He's
like, I didn't make any really bad mistakes last year. And that's why I just
kept waiting. Yeah. And it's just, it's really good. I don't know if they have
anything to build on.
I just think generally with Scheffler, I found it's almost like he's saying
interesting stuff. If you're listening. Yes. But you gotta, you gotta pay
attention. It's not on it. It's not obvious. Like some other guys are like,
man, that guy's really interesting. He's not on it. It's not obvious. Like some other guys are like, man, that guy's
really interesting. He's saying a bunch of stuff. Unless a wine glass went through his head. That's
interesting. That's interesting. But he does have a, he's has a starting to have much more
of a relatability factor for me with stuff like trying to make ravioli. I mean, that is an
Icarito injury if I've ever heard. Well, to that point though, like, I feel like we should all be,
at least it's on all of us to be a little more curious of like, it's the best player in the world, best player since Tiger,
probably around Phil level talent, I think we're talking about like, it's kind of on
all of us to be curious as to how you're doing all this, like listening to him talking about
what he's talking about in the middle of the rounds.
Little breadcrumbs here.
I know I keep referencing this, but I always go back to like, when we did a shoot with him like a year and a half ago and he just talked
about like all of his practice and training is to be able to react to
situations in competitive environments versus you hear all these guys talking
about swing positions and all this stuff like that's just not how he
approaches it it's kind of like it's kind of I think it's I think we can argue
that it's working for him and maybe like that might be the better way. He's looking
over his shoulder. Also I I think also I want to apologize
to the viewership here.
Tommy sitting balls over here.
Right.
Right.
In my view.
I can't focus.
I talked to Finno yesterday.
He said Tommy's just flushing it.
And then we've got JT posting the word here.
The free space on the bingo board.
The pound for pound number one player in the world.
You guys got these mitts on.
I feel like you're going to start slapping.
Want to pop in or you good? Oh, it's cold. It's Florida cold.
Start slapping me in the head with them. Billy Sarasagas. He's in short sleeves. I got five
layers. I said earlier, Billy, we don't come by the simulator and mess with you and AB.
That's right. That's right.
you and AB. That's right. That's right.
Velcro thing where the ball would stick to the yeah, that's what I keep. He feels like he's got one of those. Somebody's
gonna throw a ball at him is gonna stick to his hand.
Another interesting thing on the on the Scotty front, just for
what it's worth. And one thing I wanted to call out that I loved
was, you know, Roy was having some fun and just like a very
throwaway comment about like, man, why don't you get a chef?
Like, why are you out there cooking yourself? Like, I think the fact he's out there
cooking himself like might be, it might be like why he's a
craftsman who he is, man. He's just like, I'm gonna go home and
Meredith is kind of like, hey, we got to make dinner man.
Turn it off. What are we doing?
Straight up like ravioli. That is that's some advanced like
400 level stuff. I love it. I don't I don't make my own pasta.
guesthouse. He's making ravioli. Where was he?
He didn't disclose that. I would like to, if, if I ever had a chance to talk to Scotty, I've never
met him, but I would like to ask him, does he have a list of 2025 personal goals? He'd be a great guy.
He seems like the kind of guy that does, or the kind of guy that's like, I don't know, man,
I just try to get better every day. Well, here we go. You were sending you out on a mission
at some point today. Maybe you can put that on your mission.
I want to ask on the range.
Hey, Scotty,
Pete told us yesterday he's been journaling.
Yeah, a lot of journaling.
That's your journal for sure.
Yeah, I was able to double click on that.
I haven't been pretty fast.
The other thing I want to say regarding Scotty, which I think transitions to
something else is
the way the golf course feels like it's set up
this week feels very different than what we've seen in years past.
You see?
Yes, I was kind of is like a little bit of that might be Scottie's talking to some of
the equipment guys yesterday was talking to Austin Eckrode and his caddy was talking to
Tommy few other guys and they were saying it's super shit.
Bobby fled the cubes.
Of course, DJ D.
Saul was out there on the putting green. Basically, it's firmer than years
past they haven't gotten a lot of rain, like for six months. Rough is way down rough is
like I can't really do it with my gloves on rough is like that. And then a lot more shortgrass
over around the greens on spyglass, which tall you're I'm sure you're thrilled about
but should be more of a, you know, kind of,
I was talking to the wave God actually,
Willie Wilcox about it and he said,
Hey, it should be like, like everybody truly has a chance
to win this tournament versus pebble comes alive
with a little bit of firmness.
It doesn't have to be us open rock hard,
but like the slopes are so pronounced on the greens
and the greens are so small.
Everything gets activated around the greens.
Like the misses in the wrong spots when the greens are fast and firm out there activated around the greens. Like the miss is in the wrong spots
when the greens are fast and firm out there.
I know people saw the clip that was going on social media
of Rory holding a bunker shot out on 18 yesterday.
Like he barely gets it out of the right bunker.
Just barely trickles onto the green.
I'm like, okay, that's 10 feet short, rolls, rolls.
It goes in the hole by the end of it.
But like that kind of golf course
is a totally different test than a ball in hand
that we saw at the end of last year. I mean, are going to be primed for they're owed a great tournament this
week. It was the first time they've put all the best players in the world on the on the course
from the PGA Tour at least on this golf course and since the U.S. Open. Rain out on Sunday was
just really tough and we're gonna we're gonna get a better roller. It's firm, right? It's firm out there. The outlander confirmed.
It's very firm for February, January, small greens plus firmness, even smaller
greens, which is where I then I kind of get to like, hopefully, growers not
listening anymore. But when I get when I get to like, all right, small greens,
like who's the best chipper in the world? Like Scott Scott. Okay, Well, all right, so he's gonna be in play on every hole
He's gonna hit is that he's gonna hit more greens than everybody first of all
And he does miss the greens which everybody's gonna do he's probably gonna chip and everybody's gonna miss some short putts
Just cuz that's what you do here. So you almost have to disconnect yourself from the results on that front
I'm curious what the models are saying weather wise. Yeah, I
The lot of different directions we go here just get that out of the way early. You know what they say though, if you don't like the weather,
just wait 10 minutes. It's partly cloudy today, partly cloudy tomorrow. Temps are warming up a
little bit through the weekend. We've got a 50% chance of rain on Friday, but it doesn't,
just some foggy, doesn't look like anything as far as we're just watching that big stuff. Don't worry about that. Saturday, a chance of rain. A chance of rain could be like this. It could be sunny with
clouds, you know, showers passing through. It doesn't seem like there's no big,
you know, conveyor belts of moisture coming off of the Pacific Ocean. Yeah. Well, I mean,
I was shocked that we're under a tent here. We were thinking about taking the tent away.
I was like, out here?
That's gotta be a good sign.
In this economy?
I know.
I can't afford this.
Come on.
Unbelievable.
Thank you for that update though.
That's good stuff.
A couple other news and notes.
Obviously Xander pulled out potentially the new McRib.
We've got a new hot rib injury on the PGA tour.
Is it really a rib injury or is it?
We'll see. That's a bummer. That's again, like everything's a good thing. I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I'm exactly what it was. Intercostal. And I kept thinking, I kept saying intercostal in my head.
I was like, is that an intercostal word?
You know, me, I can't pronounce anything.
I'm sounding it out.
It's connecting there to a backstabbing.
Yeah, it's a Wilberg world.
But I don't know what that means.
Intercostal, I don't know what that means.
Saga.
That's stuck out to me.
Thank you, TC.
Well, we're not to see Xander.
That's, you know, a bummer.
I don't know how else to say it.
But anything else that stood out to you guys
just kind of being on site and throw free space here, observations,
anything else you're kind of noticing.
We were talking about it on the walk from the media parking lot over here,
past all the equipment trucks and everything. Just how big the operation is.
It's crazy. Yeah. I was saying it's, it's truly the,
it's the sports version of like brinksmanship.
It's like, well, if we don't bring the truck,
then they're all gonna go work with the competitors.
And it's just this arms race of like 20, 30 years of like,
do we really need, do we need two physio trucks out there?
What happened to just one?
I mean, it just gets bigger every year.
Then you talk to some of the players and they're like,
God, this physio schedule is like,
Can't get in?
Can't get in.
Yeah. You know? I just, some of the players and they're like, God, this physio schedule is like, you can't get in. Yeah. You know, I just saw that. I feel like, Hey, maybe that's a per diem situation. They got more
shot link trucks out here this week because they're doing two courses. Spyglass is all, I mean,
you gotta be thrilled. I need my data. It's early part of the season where they split up the golf
courses and I don't get four rounds of data. I can't operate. I got to go to the eye test. It does kind of trust it. Can I ask? I've literally never set foot on Spyglass property. What does
that golf course favor? It's like if you pulled up the data golf page, it's obnoxiously driving
distance. No driving accuracy. It's all driving distance as to who, the players that succeed there,
the most of the ones that hit afar so it's like
It's kind of a more burly just long thick rough
Not a lot of like nuance to the golf course could be different this year though for rough
Could be with with the rough down, but like the back nine. I mean, it's long. It's tough
It's not it's not pleasant like it's not the beginning stretch of spyglass is beautiful. Holes one through four, weave through the sand scape, and it's like, and then you get back into the forest and it gets to be a little up and down, harder greens,
and it's tough. Like just some crowns, runoffs. It's a championship. It's not a holiday golf course.
Do you feel like Spyglass is the tougher round in the Thursday, Friday?
I mean, it depends. I mean, Pebble is so much more exposed. And with Pebble playing a bit firm, it might...
I don't know what the scoring averages would be, but usually Pebble soft in January, it's
like a turkey shoot, especially that front nine.
Those guys run through like four, six, seven and stack up birdies.
Not going to be like that allegedly this year.
So I don't know.
I'd be interested to see how the scoring average maybe trends that direction just because we don't get a lot
of wind through the trees and stuff at Spyglass. I don't know. We'll monitor that through the
course of the week. Thank you.
Guys, we got our first guest coming in just a little bit here. Before we do, we got it.
Hey, it's Justin Lauer, young hitter.
Young hitter emeritus.
Young hitter. Well, yeah, always. Once a young hitter, always. graduated out. He's just hitting. It's a guy whose career he's following.
He's just a hitter.
We got to spend some time with Jordan Spieth
yesterday, making his first start since, I believe,
August at the FedEx St. Jude.
Got to ask him a ton of questions.
We actually made a video last year, just called a bunch of questions with Jordan Spieth.
We liked it so much. We're like, how about part two?
So Cody, here's a little
sampling of that video. And then we'll be joined by our first
guest on the other side.
You had the wrist bugging. I this this happened in May of 23.
So I was in the pool with my son. And I was going back and
forth on the first step. And then something just kind of
like, something happened and I couldn't move and forth on the first step, and then something just kind of like,
something happened and I couldn't move it.
So I didn't play the Byron Nelson the next week,
or that week, and I just iced it and got through it,
and then it happened again in October,
and then I just had a bunch of incidents,
it started to happen every couple days last year,
towards the end of the year, it was like, okay, I think.
My breaking point was on, I was holding,
it never happened swinging
But it would happen off the course
But we had bad weather at trune this year on Saturday finishing up and it popped out when I was holding the umbrella on 17
So I'm walking to 18 like come on pop back in pop it because I wouldn't be able to grip the club
I would have had to take my grip about this week with the wind
You know
I would have to line up in the middle of the ocean to slice something back, to try to get it in in five or six to just be done
with the round. And I got it in right before the tee ball and I hit. So that's when I was
like, all right, I think we should probably do something about this now.
Dad related injuries, they're hot in the streets, man. It can happen.
Yeah. But anyway, I went through a good process figuring out how to do it.
I started rehab literally day two there.
We stayed in Colorado, did rehab there
for three or four weeks.
And then I just feel very grateful.
I had great teams at home.
I had a great hand specialist and physios at home.
And I just stayed the course.
And I didn't miss it at all because I couldn't do it.
You know what I mean?
When you're in a cab, it wasn't like...
Was it nice to have a time out a little bit in a way?
It was great.
Well, and it was just like,
you know, I wouldn't plan well for a while
and I was just grinding through it.
I didn't know if it was affecting it or not,
but there wasn't a reason to stop.
And so it was just, finally I just,
you know, I just mentally just rested.
It was like, okay, I can't do anything.
So I can't try to force fixing anything.
And then it made me have to like think and go about a very patient process.
Like I mentioned, not only of this, like letting this get where it needs to get,
but with Cameron, like, I mean, big credit to him.
You know, he's like, we're picking ball counts.
We're tracking everything. I mean, I have a journal I wrote down every day since I started hitting putts. So,
it was a new experience for me where I had to be super patient, but it's been awesome. I'm just,
I'm glad to be back out. And, you know, whether it takes a week or a year to feel like I got
everything back, I know that it will be. So I'm pumped.
a year to feel like I got everything back. I know that it will be, so I'm pumped.
The guy's been on the podcast a number of times,
but for the first time, oh no, not you.
For the first time, PGA Tour winner,
Mavik Neely joining the podcast.
Welcome, how are you, man?
What's going on?
So yeah, it doesn't get old to be introduced like that,
so thank you.
Of course, and of course, non-PJ Tour winner, Big Randy.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Good feeling, huh?
Not bad.
We got a lot to talk to you about.
Let's start with the win, man.
Let's start with RSM.
Got your first title.
Take me through kind of,
let's start like back nine on that Sunday.
What were you feeling that was different?
What stands out to you most now looking back at it?
I was playing really good.
The Thursday was kind of the breakthrough round.
I missed a four footer for 61 on number nine.
My last hole day was blowing a ton.
That's gotta be a tough feeling.
I know.
Man.
Settle for 62.
But that was my career low.
And then I just played solid.
Not great, but pretty solid from there on in.
And the weird thing about Sunday was
like how time seemed to warp. Like that front nine, I know we were waiting every shot and
the group in front of us was told to speed up in there on the clock. But I swear those
first 10 holes felt like they took five hours. Like I felt, I thought the day was never going
to end. I'd like hanging onto a two shot lead.
It might've watching the last couple of weeks. I mean, you get, I mean, yeah. You get me armors last week. I was impossible, man.
But, um, you get, I mean, and then stuff started to go sideways.
I had a gust of wind flew the green on 11, um, and then hit it in two bunkers on 13
started scrambling.
It's like, time started to speed up and three putted on 15, 15 and, uh,
and missed my birdie putt on 16. And I was like, man,
this thing's kind of getting away from me pretty quick and got to 17 green.
And the two guys in the group in front made bogey.
And I was like shocked that I still had a chance.
We're still still had to share the lead.
Super bunch too, right? Like basically five guys with a chance to win. Yeah. And I was in the group with Daniel
Berger who eagled the last to beat me here at Pebble. And it felt like from that point,
it was like five minutes from standing on 17 green, realizing I had a chance to win
to like standing over my butt on the 18th green and like walking up there it was like 30
seconds in my head from when I like stepped onto the green to when I was like over that putt.
Well I think hearing you say that when you talk about like oh god it sounds like time starting to
speed up like what do you what do you do what's in your like because you've had chances to win
before and I don't know if this felt any different if it was just kind of one of those like it broke
my way that today. Yeah I didn't do anything different.
You know, getting ready to hit that putt, I was really nervous.
But I told myself that just because I'm nervous doesn't mean I have any less chance of making
the putt.
And it was, you know, the drive was great.
The six iron was great.
And it was like, pretty validating because I just did the same thing I'd been doing all
week.
I was like, why would I do anything different than what got me to this position and
It came off perfect like a foot off the putter head. I was like, that's oh my gosh. I just won
That's what my head is. It's pretty cool. Do you ever you're talking about?
You know time was a funny thing for you on the back nine
Did you go back and like watch the coverage to get a better sense of just everything?
I guess I did and actually what helped me a lot is when I finished third at three M
playing the final final group there, watching Johnny Vegas win.
I watched that coverage. I was like, man, I looked a lot calmer than I felt.
I was like, if, if I looked that calm, like,
and that's how those other guys looked like, man, they must really be feeling it.
Gave me a little bit of confidence that everybody is uncomfortable coming down the stretch. And I just kind of went through my
routine. I didn't do anything different. And it was like, once you start your routine, you almost
black out because it's something you've done hundreds of thousands of times. And like,
reading my putt, I wanted to make sure I really read it right. But then once I started my routine, it was like, just hit the putt
and looked up it was a foot off the putter face right on my line. Winning that event, like last
event of the 2024 season, walk off and then basically much different off season for you. You're healthy now.
How much did winning that event allow you to change up your off season strategy of,
hey, I'm guaranteed into the signature events.
I can call my shot now.
How much did that change your mentality?
A lot happened in a very short period of time.
Going into the fall, the goal was first to get in Pebble
and Rive, my two favorite events of the year.
And then next goal was see if we could get top 50
and get a master's invite.
And third goal was Kapalua.
And kind of getting to Sea Island,
I had these two tournaments locked up,
but a win was really only going to be
a thing that would get me to Kapalua and the Masters.
So that was kind of the Hail Mary shot.
But it shortened my offseason by a week,
which I wasn't upset about.
Kapalua was pretty fun.
But actually, we went down to Thanksgiving in La Quinta and got rear-ended.
It totaled my car.
Really?
Just a crazy, crazy thing.
I was like, really wish I had flown.
It would have been much safer.
Yeah.
I thought we took care of that.
I thought you fixed that glitch.
I know.
I was going to say, buddy, if we were going to be a couple pounds overweight.
Why are you driving anywhere?
I know.
I'd be a couple pounds overweight and I'm a big chicken.
I take no risks when it comes to flying.
And it turns out I should have.
It was way less dangerous than driving.
But, and then had my...
Everyone's okay? big chicken I take no risks when it comes to flying and turns out I should have it was
way less dangerous than driving but and then had everyone's okay though we're all fine
you know we got a little little banged up our car was totaled spent three and a half hours in the middle of the Mojave Desert just like typical thing three three and a half days after your first
PGA Tour win was there a random like quest was there a random intersection in the Mojave the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the the Um, you know, my wife had like a, my, I had like a little concussion actually ruptured her eardrum on the head rest.
But you know, by some miracle, um, we were all fine and my clubs were fine.
I mean, it would have been terrible if the clubs were angled the other way in
the trunk and like just won my first tournament and all 14 of my clubs are
snapped in half three days later.
You're a big equipment.
I mean, I don't like to change equipment.
So, um, so that happened. And then we had
our wedding celebration the next week and then our honeymoon in Lanai and then I was home for two
weeks. So it was crazy. But we got both the newlyweds. I know. Congratulations. I got married
early December. We're both holding it with our left hand. Yeah. Do you still fiddle with your ring? Are you used to it yet?
Okay.
I wear a size nine when I'm playing because it's a little tighter and then a 10.
Okay.
It's just a little looser, a little more comfortable for daily life.
So really optimizing performance with my leg.
I think you're optimized kind of through the bag here, so to speak.
How was the honeymoon?
It was great.
We went to the, you know, it was like we're residents of Hawaii for a month and a half there. So that's the old Couture plan, right? I know. It was great. It was like we're residents of Hawaii for a month and a half there.
That's the old Kutcher plan, right?
I know. It was amazing. I actually was talking, I played with Justin Rose last week and his
Katifuchi, he asked me, when you made that putt, was it excitement or relief? And I was like,
it's 100% excitement. I thought I was jacked and adrenaline, you know, adrenaline, everything going, uh,
coming down 18. But when that punt went in,
the adrenaline through the roof,
it took me like three days to actually be able to sleep normally.
And then we got car accidents and another little shot of adrenaline.
It was just, so I was like, thank goodness.
I didn't have to play a tournament the next week.
Cause I had,
I don't know how it would have teed it up three days after that kind of crazy
adrenaline rush.
Any big surprises with your schedule as far as like just being in everything now of, oh,
you know what, like I'm not going to be able to play that event.
I really like that event or...
So that's the thing.
Winning a fall tournament, I am only in these first two signature events.
I'm not in Bay Hill right now. Oh really? Okay. I'm in the players, I'm in masters. The big kind of
kicker for me is I'm 26 in the world now so top 30 would get in Bay Hill. I don't
even know what the FedExCup points list looks like. I had a good start at
Kapalua but still very much up in the air.
Hopefully top 50 for the open and top 60 for the US Open. So I'm in a good spot, but still not locked up, which is kind of weird. One thing that I think is interesting and you kind of see it with
Jordan's maybe a different example because he's been out and he can kind of get into whatever
he wants. But like, I remember you being a sponsor exemption here last year. Is that kind of like, you know, especially with spots in these
events becoming harder and harder to come by, was that kind of like a tipped ball going your way to
kind of set you up for the rest of the season? Or how do you look at like a year ago, basically?
So huge. I'm so grateful for that sponsors exemption. I know my agent Peter worked really
hard on that one too. And this is a special tournament for me and AT&T being one of my partners has been awesome. But
especially last year with the amount of points that were given out of signature events, you know,
this year it's take a little bit of credit, but more judicious. Just hoovered him up and then pulled the ladder up after.
It's hilarious that I finished like T8 at Kapalua and I was like, I just cost myself
some points.
No, but that's the thing.
It's not necessarily pulling up the ladder because it was too fatty in the middle, right?
Yeah.
Can you give an overview of what you guys were looking at and the Cliff Notes version
of what you guys were looking at and the Cliff Notes version of what you're talking about. So, so the general, I mean, to be fair, there are some guys before even the season before,
like, Loncho Griffin and Nate Lashley and a group of guys said, like, this seems like way too many
points. And, you know, people kind of laughed and turned their nose up and was like, Oh, a bunch of
PGA Tour, nobody's complaining that too many points or whatnot, but they were totally right.
And it's a tough podcast for that. Some of those people might have been in this room. Yeah.
No, it was a lot more nuanced than that. We can get into that. We had no data or whatever to
validate or deny that it was just kind of, you know, a group of guys that said this doesn't
seem right. And then as the season played out, people were like, this really doesn't seem right.
Like how does just to lopsided your say, yeah, yeah.
Corey Connors and back to back weeks is kind of my example where he finished sixth, the
Canadian Open and like a two way tie for 28 or something at Memorial.
And I was also the one mentioning that too. So it didn't quite seem right.
So we just went in using some of the like, I don't even know the objective, like performance metrics like data golf or OWGR field rating or whatever it is.
It's basically like comparing OWGR, data golf and FedEx cut points.
Exactly.
And seeing where the, you know, like, what was outsized, right? Yeah. So surprising to me, I actually thought that, uh, you know, and a bunch of guys
thought that, um, these opposite field events, because they had such weak
fields were getting too many points.
They were actually not getting enough distributed.
Oh, they were fairly like a regular event and the opposite field was fair.
It was just like kind of the belly of the signature event. It was like, like a regular event and the opposite field was fair it was just like
kind of the belly of the signature events that got too many so yeah and they
took all your so what was that process like you just approached who Tyler
Dennis or I was just like hey I've been, I did it on a flight from
Vegas to Atlanta to go see my coach, Scotty ham.
And, uh, just, were you piloting?
I was not piloting.
I was, I was in the back of that bus.
Well, sometimes I see those pilots come out mid flight.
I was jealous.
I was jealous.
But, uh, yeah, I just did it just out of curiosity.
I was like, I feel like this is the case, but I don't know for sure. And it turned out being I sent it to my coach sent it to a bunch of my team and they kind of sent it on some other guys. And I feel like most of the tour had seen it. And then Kirsten Burgess actually approached me she was like, Hey, I hear you did some work on the points. Can I take a look? And I was like, yeah, here it is. And your credit, she'd already been working on it. And they came, the one that
was ended up being adopted was just a slightly smoother curve. But you fixed the glitch. Same
answer. Yeah, that's good. Nice. I got quite, I got, I mean, we could do a whole podcast just
on the pilot stuff of like, how many, we talked about it a little bit last year, but how many events are you planning on flying to yourself this
year?
Mostly just the West coast swing.
I'm in a little single engine prop plane, a piston plane.
So it's the farthest I'll probably go is Texas.
And just for safety and, you know, lack of stress, I'm having a flight instructor come
with me the whole way.
Okay.
Kind of flies the plane in, we go together
and then he flies at home.
And then if there's any variables, he can kind of.
Totally, and you know, last thing I want is
to be stressing about weather or, you know,
exhausted after a big Sunday and have to go try
and fly myself at night in IMC, whatever it is.
So I'm a big,
you would not want to fly after a win. No, no, I, no, I'll let the professionals do that.
But I'm planning to find myself to everything. I didn't fly from San Diego here to Monterey
because there are thunderstorms and icing conditions the whole way. And maybe, maybe
win a couple of these signature events. I'll get something that can fly above
the weather someday. What's your range on your? The longest flight I've done was I flew at home
from Omaha. We went Omaha to Santa Fe, Santa Fe to Vegas. It's called the delivery flight where you
buy it in Omaha. You can make the transaction to fly at home. We had 60 mile an hour headwinds,
we had turbulence and a storm coming over the Rocky. So we had to fly down through Santa
Fe. I know we were like almost flying backwards at one point, but it was a nine and a half
hour day with a five and a half hour trip to Santa Fe and four hours over.
Do you have a limit on like, like to the FAA rules for commercial pilots apply
to as far as like how long he can fly in a day or anything like that.
There's actually no takeoff minimum.
So you can take off with zero visibility as long as you're not flying for hire.
So in some ways the rules for general aviation are less than actually in a lot of ways less
than commercial aviation.
Um, but yeah, at that point, I mean,
the plane can go for about seven and a half hours, thousand miles, but at that point,
the limiting factors your bladder, not the fuel.
Take me, how, when did your love of flying develop? When did you know you wanted to
pursue a pilot's license? What's the backstory with that?
So I was, I was obsessed with flying when I was a kid or just airplanes when I was a kid. I actually
named our cat airplane when I was two. So one cat was named airplane, one cat was named propeller.
And then I kind of forgot about it because I fell in love with golf and hockey growing up. And then
in the 2021, maybe 2022, 3M, I was paired with George McNeil. Yeah. Call
him Uncle George because our last names are close enough. And he flew himself on tour
for 20 years. He's like a Renaissance man. He really is. He's really the coolest guy
maybe ever to play on the PGA tour. But yeah, he, we started talking about, you know, what
it took to get your pilot's license and all that entailed and
You know the qualities that make a safe pilot and I thought this was something I wanted to do. I went home
Like right after the playoffs that year, uh took my first discovery flight and like immediately fell in love
Uh, there's a note in our our notes from soli said your your
Like club head speed is up quite a bit from last year I've talked talked to me you know, a bit of a speed trainer myself here. I'm looking for every, every tip
I can find. What's been going on? Yeah. So I picked up a ton of speed in 2020, 2021. I was like,
I think my ball speed was like a high one sixties. And so I went and worked out a bunch. Fun fact, I also met my wife in that gym. She worked in
the gym. So I had other motivation.
Everybody should be out there.
To be in there much. I know, seriously. It's kind of mid to high 175s. And I'm really not
trying to get faster. I think if I can get to 180 in competition, that's where I want
to be. I just think if we play Torrey Pines every week, I think the average is going to
be around 100,000. I'm really not trying to get faster. I think if I can get to 180 in competition, that's
where I want to be. I just think if we play Torrey Pines every week, I think the average
ball speed on the PGA tour would be in one nineties in five years. Right. I'm not going
to the guys.
It would just be a self-selecting group almost.
Totally. But I think once you get much over 185, it's like actually golf actually gets
harder on the PGA tour because there's not enough holes to reward like the dispersion cone. Yeah, exactly. You've got bigger gaps
between all your clubs and there's not many holes that reward 195 ball speed on the PGA
tour. Like what are you going to do on number one at Pebble? Exactly. What do you do at
a dump speed with your wedges and all that too? Totally. And you're, you're, you know,
dispersion gets really wide. So I just,
right now this down, not to open another can of worms,
I'm going to stop. I'll roll back and everything. But I'm like, man,
the way you set up golf courses and the golf courses you pick,
select the type of golfer that keeps their PGA tour card. That's my, yeah, totally. And if you
make wide open golf courses with no penalty areas, with long, rough and narrow fairways,
you're just going to ship it. And like the guys are going to, we're going to do anything
we can to play the best golf and shoot low scores. So if that means we have to get really precise
with our mid and short irons, we'll do that. And if it means hitting it further.
Well, that's been a big thing for me is like talking about the product and all this stuff on
TV, TV product or pace of playing on that. Like I think the product is a big part of it is venues and how they set up that venue.
And how they promote players and how they get guys to the PJ tour.
And that's why the corn fairy tour is so important to have better golf courses and
why, you know, whether it's more pathways through the DP world tour or other
places, it's because like you said, it's doesn't do any good to self select on
one tour and then set them up for a completely different product on the tour
that they're doing.
And so I think that's a big part select on one tour and then set them up for a
completely different product on the tour that they're graduating to, you know,
it's, it's just kind of a, it's quite an ecosystem.
It's kind of balanced.
Even if you look at golf courses and the signature events versus non that that's
that even rewards a different skill set.
And it's the guys who can get high and really far
that are gonna play well at the Quail Hollows,
at the Torrey Pines, Riviera, like all those places,
you know, Bay Hill, like it's a different set of skills
that are gonna stay in the top 50 and perform well there
versus, you know, the guys that are playing well
at Colonial or, you know, I think Hartford's
one of the most fun golf courses on tour.
And TPC Sawgrass, it doesn't reward any style of golf.
I mean, you just have to play good.
Well, on that note, we were talking a little bit about
just secondhand observations on the golf course this week,
but you've actually been out playing the golf course.
It seems like much less rough, a lot firmer.
Has that been your experience?
What's it like out there?
Definitely, yeah.
You can tell it hasn't gotten much rain. It looks completely different when
it gets a bunch of rainwater versus well water, but those greens are crispy. They're playing
really small and the roughs down, but with them as far with the greens, as firm as they
are, if you're not coming in with spin, they start to play really small. Like 11 is that
uphill wedge hole. Usually when it's wet, you're taking one or two extra clubs and not going to spin off. Now if you miss the fairway, it's a really good shot to hold the green, just because you're not coming in with any spin. So I think it's going to reward the guys that can drop their six iron down on time.
your first off Spyglass tomorrow. It's the coldest range on the PGA.
How do you approach Spyglass?
Is that like kind of almost you enjoy being first off, get that out of the way, then you
can focus on Pebble for three days.
Yeah, I, so I love Spy.
I played the NorCal Jr. and the NorCal match play there every summer.
I'm excited.
I don't have to carry my own bag for 36 out there.
That makes it easy. But it's definitely a harder, I think usually plays as the harder
of the two. I like it from a practice perspective because today I'm going to go play nine at
spy I'll play spy tomorrow and then I'll just bring all my practice back over to pebble.
The greens are very similar but subtly different. I feel like there's a little bit more a little bit more turf on the spy greens
maybe a hair thatch here and bounce here the pebbles seem a little thinner and and
It's just like subtle differences. So all effects putting most or shots into the greens or what putting and shipping mostly but
and and spy usually plays a little softer tea to green but
And and spy usually plays a little softer tee to green but
Yeah, it's it's one of those where if you can shoot in the 60s at spy you're in a great spot and then
Just playing normal golf. You should be a couple understanding on a tee that pebble who you play with
I've got Nico Echeverria and then Chuck Robbins CEO of Cisco another one of my partners
I'm excited for him Last time I played with him
was just a couple months after a back surgery. And he did everything he could to be out there
and come play with me. So we should have some fun. Cool. What do you do when, not saying that he
would be like this, but you play with a lot of people in Pro-Ams. I would imagine like,
this event has changed a little bit. It'd be just, you know, again, kind of self-selecting. The price
has gone up for the celebrities and amateurs, but when it becomes a bigger field, this
turns into like the absolute major championship of Pro-Am golf. Guys got to be just beside
themselves nervous, right? I mean, what, like, what's your, what's your advice when you can
tell like your partner, your Pro-Am partner is just losing their mind?
Well, I got, I got two things to answer here. One is I'm the steal from Scott Stallings, because there's a one a mutual
friend of ours, we were was in a pro am with him and he is a very
nervous, kind of a nervous fidgety golfer. And he was
standing over a putt with a stroke for a net birdie or
something. And, you know, Scott was telling like, it's just
outside left. And then he's standing over kind of fidgeting
and he goes, Oh, yeah, and all those voices you're hearing in
your head, they're not real. Which was a good line. But
actually, one of the more telling kind of pro am
instances I had I played in the Hartford pro am the travelers
pro am in a celebrity group with the Yukon women's basketball
coach, so won many, many national championships. And I am in a celebrity group with the Yukon women's basketball coach.
So one many, many national championships
and the this guy who won the first season of The Voice and was a judge on The Voice
and the guy who played the George Washington in the Hamilton Broadway film.
So pretty performers.
What a group.
And so there may be 100, 150 people around the first tee.
I hit my driver down there and then they all tee off and walking off. They go,
man, wow. It's like the most nervous I've been in my entire life.
I looked at him like they're crazy. I was like, really?
But then I thought about it for a second. I was like, well,
if I had to sing in front of 10 people, he'd just terrified. So, um So it's like the best thing about golf is just leveling the playing field of like, you
know, everybody gets nervous, everybody, you know, everyone kind of out of their area of
expertise.
Chuck Robbins, amazing CEO, like runs a boardroom, like you can't believe, but put them on the
first tee and that's a little different.
So who's the most nervous you like, or who playing with,
have you been the most nervous to play with ever?
Um, that's a good question. I mean,
I remember the first time I like saw a tiger in real life, uh,
like not really tournament. It was, it was, I played the group in front of him at the Greenbrier back in 2017.
That's just sick here.
Yeah.
And like kind of a crazy moment was standing on, I think it's the fourth green.
It's that kind of longish par three.
I'm not sure.
I might, might be having maybe it was eight and I looked over on the four and I had this really weird sound coming from that
fairway. I was like, that's, it's like a rustling,
but it's like the loudest rustling I've ever heard in my life.
I look over and it's just a stampede of people walking, following tiger.
And I go, okay, this is a little different. Like that's,
I've never heard that following me at a tournament. So that was pretty cool.
I thought you were going to say that pro amAm up at Hazelteen we played together.
Yeah, I know.
This guy, Big Randy, man.
Big Randy.
Elite ball striker.
He did not drive me all day.
Well, I know we got a couple more guests that are going to cycle in here in a minute, but
I got to get you out of here on a couple of wedding questions.
Biggest thing, what's been the biggest surprise?
What's been the most like I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing.
I think it's a good thing. I think it's a good thing. It's definitely a bit of an adjustment for Maya. She was working full time and finishing her school online when we started dating and now
she's out here traveling 30 weeks a year and seeing the circus that is the PGA tour and
the crazy that professional golfers are.
She's done an awesome job keeping up with that. It's been really cool for me because
for the first time it's like my
body and my energy levels that tank before
Like mentally I just am dying to go home because it kind of feels like I have home traveling with me a little bit
She's still doing physio and rehab stuff with you or you know
No, you can't work together.
No, she doesn't. She's just kind of out here supporting and awesome and helping and learning
learning how it how this crazy routine all works and helps a ton with travel and
just having another set of hands out there to do all these. I
can't imagine. I don't even remember what it was like doing it alone. It's like the
circle of life. You get to travel with your wife and then you start to travel with kids
and then kids get old enough to stay in school and then you're back traveling alone again.
It's kind of the way it goes out here on tour. And it's, I can see it's
definitely an adjustment for the guys when their family stops traveling for the first
time. They're always looking for people to share houses with. And my rookie, a couple
rookie years on tour, you're just in the Hampton Inn. That's your hotel. You don't know anything
different. But now it's, I can't imagine traveling without her.
All right. Last thing, this is from Neil.
So every year we have this community called The Nest,
where it's just like kind of our membership offering.
And so we always do a Nest gift every year.
And so, you know, we're trying to think of things
that aren't just like a hat or, you know,
a koozie or a towel or whatever.
So this is what Neil came up with this year.
I want you to tell me if you know what that is,
if you have any thoughts on it, because people on the message board didn't, you know, they weren't
loving it. And so we're trying to get some, you know, some other perspectives. Clues in every
mystery says, fix your divots. Yeah. So I'm guessing it's a divot holder or a sand holder.
Okay. Okay. I was thinking like, if you really like a divot it, you could put that in there.
If you didn't see that, what would you think?
I actually thought it was like a key holder.
Which I think it can be purposeful.
That's what we're saying. You can use it for anything.
I was almost hoping it was like a hand warmer.
That's a great idea. Neil, ride that to the list. We haven't seen a hand warmer.
Hand warmer, multi-purpose.
One at a time. Just one hand at a time.
There's a golf, one of my favorite golf courses in the
world in Makinta is called the Quarry and it's like maybe the best manicured golf course I've
seen in my entire life. But you sand your divots and you pick up the actual divot and put it in
this little thing in the side of the golf cart. So anyone from the Quarry is watching right now
and needs to find some extra divot know, did it back off the stairways
Well, Matt, thanks for hopping on man. Great to see you. Good luck with everything. Congrats on the win. Congrats on the wedding
We are going to be back with another couple guests here in a second before we do I haven't even I'm talking
You know out of school here
I haven't even got to listen to this podcast yet
But people won't stop talking about the podcast that Sally and KVV did with Joe Mayo recently.
If you have not had a chance to listen to that, uh, Cody, why don't we give
the people just a little, a little snippet of that one.
It read out in about seven seconds.
I said, what, what, what the f**k is this?
Hey, you said you wanted honesty, but I want to also get something.
Out there perfectly clear.
Victor Harbin does not need me.
Yes. I said that right out of high school. Victor Hovind does not need me. Yes, I said that.
Right out of high school, I was blinded.
I had a terrible accident
and I lost the vision in my right eye.
And I remember closing this left eye
and when I did, my right eye was black.
I didn't just grab this out of thin air.
And I love it when these people come at me
and they attack me on this.
You're sitting here arguing with a goddamn track man.
You're arguing with with Sir Isaac Newton and I'm sitting back here drinking
George T-Stacks saying have at it boys. I met Victor originally when I went to
Oklahoma State and I can't remember the number of times,
I think it was four. Four times in the analysis I said stay away from golf
instruction and that includes me.
Stay away. I said I caution you to leave this alone.
I refuse to sit back and say yeah it was all me. Yeah it was my genius teaching.
No guys I was dealing with a generational athlete.
I said Victor I said I like you a lot. I said but I don't want a damn thing from you.
And I said that knowing full well
that this is a potential major champion sitting on my couch. If he flubs that shot, I have to move
to like Cambodia. I can never get on Twitter again. Fact. Fact. Not an opinion. Fact.
I remember, and this is not a lie, I broke the same sandwich three times in one day.
I was chipping it so badly, I broke it around a tree, I whipped it around a tree, broke
it, I drove to Palm Springs to a guy called the club doctor.
You guys can look him up.
I'm sure he's no longer living.
He was an elderly gentleman back in 1997, 1998.
I broke it, he fixed the shaft with that
quick drying tour epoxy. I take it home. I break it around the same tree again.
I take it back to him. He shafts it a second time and I break it a third time
and I said, get it. I threw it in the lake. So I broke the same wedge three
times in one day. So people that have chipping problems, I know all about him.
So people that have chipping problems, I know all about them. We are back here on the Know Laying Up Live show, live from the range here at the AT&T
Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
We are going to put these guys on the stand on the hot seat.
We are welcoming in two rules officials from the PGA Tour, Gary Young.
Gary, thanks for joining us. Gary. Thanks for joining us. Absolutely
Thanks for having us and Stephen Cox is here as well. Hello, Stephen. How are you? Sorry TC?
Like you to be on where's that hazard pay?
These guys are nervous. I could tell them they're nervous to be here right now
But I don't know anything anything hot in the streets number one question
I think I have for you guys. What have you thought about the course setups
on the TGL so far?
Course setup on TGL.
Yeah, they've been very difficult.
It's been actually a lot of fun to watch that.
Interesting product and reaching a whole new segment
of fans, which is great.
Yeah, we're trying to get ahold of the designer
so we can come out on tour and start working with it.
The temple.
Yeah, that'd be exactly right.
It looks like it could make your life a lot more difficult.
We've been saying it's too slow and sticky out there.
They need to amp up the-
They've been watering too.
So that's what we need, right?
A couple of those little course designs.
That really speaks to me.
What have you thought about the pace of play out there though?
Like the shot clock and all that stuff?
Interesting. It's interesting seeing Tiger get penalized the other night. Um,
you know, obviously it's intriguing, obviously.
The ironic thing about that, the guy that's pressing the shot clock button, that's Mark Russell.
Yeah.
Yeah.
For a form of us. So he's not, he's not moved away from it.
I like how he kind of sits up like as the banker from dealer, no deal. Like he's like a dark
shadowy figure that's up there.
But we wanted to play a little a little good take bad take game
with you guys. We talk a lot of rules. You know, we talked a lot
about core setup, competition, all kinds of stuff. That's your
alley. You know, we get to you know, we get to do it without
any defense in front of us, right? We're always on offense,
nobody to check us. But sometimes cox you'll call me up
and say, All right, you should know this here from time
to time, but all right.
Good take, bad take pace of play is not enforced on the PGA tour.
Gary, I'll let you tell you that.
Just not true.
That, um, yeah, a lot, a lot goes into pace of play.
Obviously when you think about it, but, uh, whether or not we're enforcing
the policy, our, our staff works very hard at it and
you know I think that's probably the misconception out there is that we're not doing anything about
it we've just always been a company that doesn't air our dirty laundry to the public you know
and it's obviously a heightened topic right now so things may change as far as that's concerned
but we've got a lot of uh we're at a good point in our sport right now and as a company, and
I think we've got a working group that we've put together that we're going to be talking
about made up of players, and we're going to have a lot of ideas on how we can further
address pace play.
And when I talk about pace play, it's really about speed of play, speed at which players
play shots.
We've got to commit to being better at that.
So take us to the Tori Sunday.
It was, you know, AMX was on top of conversations as well, but final group plays in five and
a half hours.
How does that happen?
What are the myriad of factors that lead to that?
And in kind of what are you guys battling throughout the course of that as well?
Well, I think the first thing we'd mention is the venue.
And we've all been to Torrey before.
We've seen the type of golf course that that is.
And that's the beauty of that tour, isn't it?
We play at multiple venues and it offers us different things.
And we know that Torrey, including the North course now after the Renault,
it's really strong without Mother Nature kicking in. And obviously the winds that we experienced on Friday and then again on Sunday just added that additional element to how difficult the golf course was playing.
And you and I were talking yesterday about my analogy and traffic and I think Jason Sobel in an article that he released yesterday alluded to it as well is that I was traveling from Vail to Denver, it's about 85 miles and it took me three hours and 20 minutes. Well,
that wasn't because people weren't driving fast enough, it was because there was an accident
on I-70 and it snagged it up. Well, golf is a very similar sort of journey and yes, you've
got the bucket of individual or a selection of those players should be hitting strokes
in a faster amount of time. So yes, you would do need bucket of individual or a selection of those players should be hitting strokes in a faster amount of time.
So yes, you would do need to activate that in some shape or form.
But inevitably in our sport, we've got other disruptions in a similar vein to traffic.
You've got accidents, you've got people that, you know, there's three lanes going down to two.
And in our world of rulings and ball searches, these are all the things that disrupt our play. Three-minute ball searches don't help, then you've got drive-backs, and all of these
things just, unfortunately, just back us up. I use the 13th hole at Torrey as a really
good example. It's over 600 yards. Guys hit the fairway. They're about whatever it is,
270 out. They know they can't quite get there there they don't want to lay it down to the
bottom of the hill so they wait for the green to clear they know they can't quite get there but
they want to get in a greenside bunker try and get up and down make birdie well when you've got
26 groups over 18 holes right and you only stagger them at 11 minute intervals that guy who's
275 out by the time that grease has cleared,
the interval is down more than 11 minutes because they can't all three of them play
from 275 out where they're really tricky up and down at 13 at Tori. So you times that
by 26 groups. And it trickles back to the golf course. It trickles back. And look, the
way we set golf courses up week to week on tour, unfortunately, whether we like it or not, we don't set it up for pace often.
We set it up for a myriad of different things, different challenges in different ways to
showcase the versatility of certain golf holes, certain golf hole locations, which are now
going to be more challenging than others, to challenge our best players.
All this has a detrimental effect to pace.
We're not proud of 529.
We want to play quicker than that.
But unfortunately, there's so many different factors which tend to be working against us.
How much of that is winter, daylight? If you could go in twosomes every round, I would imagine that
you would want to. How much is the difference between twosomes and threesomes have an effect
on the pace of play in general? I think it has a tremendous difference.
And especially when we get to a point where we can play twos,
and we've initiated some new strategies as far as tee time
structure goes, we've put in some starters gaps
in between tee times.
We've built in a flow that we haven't in the past.
We've had tighter intervals. Like, like Steven was alluding to,
if we can space groups out and give them room,
it's amazing how good the flow is to the game
and the pace seems so much quicker.
So that's always our strategy.
And we've made some great changes for next season.
Unfortunately, we're in a season right now
where we've got a maximized
start still. These guys are playing for the top 100 exempt heading into next season.
But when we get to next season, we've made some nice changes and we've got no excuses
next year. We need to be implementing our, uh, our pace of play policy, uh, very strictly
once we get into that.
It does seem like it was clarifying like all of that of like all the field size changes
and the eligibility changes and all of that.
It's like that ladders back to to pace of play.
So we'll does we'll be we'll be patient.
Yeah, sure.
You'll be watching closely next year.
Fresh is on in 26.
Yeah, but we should have much more success next year. Good year. Pressure's on in 26. Yeah. Yeah.
But we should have much more success next year.
Good take, bad take.
Going back to the rulings thing, do you feel that players should be more personally responsible
for knowing the rules?
Because I feel like that's too often, it feels like rules officials get called into a very,
very straightforward ruling.
Which affects what we're talking about here,
snaking back to the golf course as well.
And I think this is part of this sort of package that we're trying to put together
in terms of how we go about tackling this very complex issue.
And there's no doubt I'll use Black Desert as an example,
a tournament that we play in.
Which was awesome, by the way.
Which was great.
But again, the pace wasn't great there.
Architecturally, with the landscape that that golf course is in, we had over 300 rulings
that week.
Now, you know, you've hit it off.
What's the average for a week?
I think the average would be closer to around 100.
Okay.
But a lot of those rulings that we that we were experiencing there at Black Desert were
all unplayable ball options, which is relatively straightforward. So yes, it is, it can be quite, you know, infuriating
to get to drive, you know, two, three, four minutes. And that's the other part of this
is that we've got 18 different golf holes that we're trying to cover and we've only
probably got eight, you know, nine staff or 10 staff. So we may have a journey time and
that's exacerbated by large crowds or what have you. Certainly Black Desert was tough
to get around. So all of this is again, not helping us from a pace perspective.
And if players did know the basics and coupled with were willing
to trust themselves, and that's the big problem that we face,
our rewards are that great.
Yeah.
Week to week, guys don't want to.
They don't want to chance.
And they understand as well that, you well that our coverage across the golf course
from a broadcast perspective, spotlight is on them so often now that the ramifications of getting it
wrong inevitably lead them to call for a ruling, whether it's complex or whether it's simple.
So like the ball rolling on the greens now, like that's pretty cut and dried, right? Like,
Like the ball rolling on the greens now, like that's pretty cut and dried, right? Like, hey, you own your spot.
You put it back.
Yeah.
And I think when I marked it and lifted it, yeah.
A lot of guys are comfortable operating when they're running in that regard.
Yeah.
I've seen them operating on their own for sure more often there.
It's kind of the routine drops that always get us.
It's like, all right, you've dropped from TIO before.
Which one get to as well?
I would love to see it though, like a truly like the challenge situation in the NFL where,
you know, obviously in crucial situations, you're entitled to a free review, but like
you get two, you get two rules for a week, for, you know, the first two days and two
for the second two days or something like that.
I think that'd be interesting.
So we talked about some of the inherent, you the inherent restrictions on pace of play, but there is
slow play on the PGA Tour, right? And I want you to explain the balance between the inherent things
that stop and how you guys design the rules, right? There's a rule. If you're out of position,
you have 40 seconds. Anything over 40 seconds would be a bad time. But if you're not out of position,
there's no rush to hit the next shot
if you've got nowhere to go.
I'm wondering if you can kind of explain
how you guys monitor this stuff.
What is going on behind the scenes
to monitor pace of play for the listeners?
Well, you know, we're trying to educate people
more on our pace of play policy,
which we in effect do have a shot clock
presently on the PGA Tour.
Every shot that every player is hitting is being recorded out there.
And at the end of that week, they're going to get on their player app.
They see their ranking. They see where they sit among their peers.
They see what the tournament average was the week before.
And we have a system in place that says anyone who is more than seven
seconds above the tournament average is going to get an AST violation for that week or an
infraction.
Which is average stroke time violation.
That's what an AST stands for.
And then what is that ladder up to?
What is that violation?
Right now it's a fine structure that's in place for that.
If someone accumulates 10 during the course of the season, there's a significant fine for that.
So we get into the perception of we're not doing anything, but we are far ahead of any
other tour in the world right now. We are cutting edge with some of the technology that
we have available to us through the ShotLink system. It's recording everything.
We've made significant investments as a tour,
and I think that we're probably,
we're geared up for this whole topic going forward.
We're going to do nothing but get better in this.
And on top of that, we've got a membership right now
that is buying into, hey, I'm a part owner of this.
I want the best version of the PGA Tour.
And I recognize that we have a responsibility as players.
I am hearing that from them for the first time,
and it's exciting to hear this.
So I really think we've got,
we're well positioned heading into next season.
We're gonna get through this season.
We're gonna have some bumps in the road
over the next few weeks where we've got some larger fields
than we probably should have.
And of course, there'll be some backlash that,
oh my gosh, PGA Tour didn't finish again
or make the cut on Friday.
But again, we're-
That's just a simple math though, sometimes, right?
It is, it is.
And that's the reason we've made the changes for next year.
So we're heading in a great direction.
And you got anything to add to that?
Oh, and it's obviously a lot of chatter about shot clocks, isn't it?
And I sort of I chuckle internally.
And so we've actually got two of them right now.
And within us, within our game already, we've got the traditional bucket
where, you know, myself as an official will will deal with a group
that's out of position and start timing them on individual strokes,
which is what you've seen on TV
and then you've got the other element is and this never really got an attraction about 30 months ago when we introduced into the policy was
to the player generated data element
which is the other note the other version of the shot clock and
And the reason we did that was a because it was player generated as opposed to the subjective nature of me going in there
To time you two and you turn around to me and say well, don't look at. It's this guy. Yeah, and then you tell me the same thing by the way
But going back to the to the player generated data was that how do you encourage?
All right, and and and provide an incentive for the
guys that are largely in position to play in a timely fashion?
And that's that element of player generated data.
And there's no hiding.
The data doesn't lie.
Especially over the course of a season.
Over the course of a season, absolutely.
But it's amazing when you start analyzing the end of tournament dates.
I was just looking at the stuff from Tori and I've had 155 playing in Tori and
we get a report on Monday and it ranks them from slowest to the fastest. And it's amazing
how consistent someone leak us that report. I will say this, I will say this. I'm not
a great one for leaking information, but and I hate to give the guy a shout out but Wesley Bryan I can't believe I'm even doing it.
It just shows that you can play golf at the highest level and play in a timely fashion.
Of the 155 listed he was the fastest player and going into the final round he was right
there contending and I don't think that we'd probably do a good job of celebrating the
Stephen Yeagers of this world and the Ryan Foxes and the Ricky Fowlers who are playing golf at the highest level,
but playing it in a very, very timely fashion.
I love watching those guys.
How does the shot clock work?
When does it start?
Because I think one of our frustrations is guys not doing their work before it's their
turn and then it's their turn.
And then it's currently our system does not work exactly as we as officials.
If we put a group on the clock, we start the clock slightly different.
But what we do have is a system that applies the same standard
to every player on the golf course.
So when a player hits the first player, we'll say we're out in the fairway, and the first
player in the group hits their approach shot, the clock starts
on the next player.
And this is on shot link? Is that right?
This is this is driven through the shot link system. And so,
although it's not, you know, so the players average for the
tournament, maybe 40 seconds. In reality, it's probably slightly less than
that because we would start the clock slightly later. We would allow that ball from the first
player to land, settle out, and now if the next player can play without interruption,
start the clock on them. But it does give us a really good, consistent it's if it's being applied to everyone
in the field the same way, and the average is the average. So
we feel very confident in the data. And as Stephen alluded to
when we look at that list, and we see the guys at the top of
that list who appear to be the slowest for the week. It's
exactly the group of individuals that
we are on the radio talking about. They need to be warned. They need to be timed. Okay.
From a timing perspective, do you do, do you have like a,
an actual stopwatch or do you use a timer on your phone?
I use the phone. I'm a phone guy.
Is that just personal preference?
I don't know. Maybe I'm old school, but I'm a stopwatch guy.
Is that just personal preference? I don't know, maybe I'm old school, but I'm a stopwatch guy.
What would the guys think of Steve the stopwatch, too, I would think.
It's a visual for Steve, and he likes to intimidate the players with the stopwatch.
So I have like a relatively half-baked idea on group, as far as like publishing
and grouping players was kind of like, all right, the slowest third are red light players.
The middle third are yellow light and the fastest third are green light.
And for Thursday, Friday, the red light players have to play together.
And you're going off late.
If you and if you are, you're almost start the round on the clock.
And the green guys, the fast guys get
rewarded, get to go out and have some room to run and have their pace of play.
I'm sure there's something I haven't thought of with that.
But what's your reaction to that?
Well, one thing I, what you're saying is, um, put the slower players all together
in the same group, which would put a lot more heat on them.
They've got to look at each other on the first team.
We're in trouble.
Right.
So, I mean, I guess we're all in this together.
You know, when we get the groupings which are generated
by the global home at the PGA tour each week,
they're going through the safeguards,
making sure these players haven't played together
too many times, they haven't had early late starts.
When we get those and we see them, quite frankly,
if we see two, three slow players together,
that's not our job to hide
them.
Their job is to keep up.
So we just trust our policy.
And if they fall out of position, we're going to time them.
So they do need to look at each other on the first team and say, we got to go.
We're in trouble.
Full permission to steal that idea.
TIO.
TIO.
There was TIO in TGL the other night.
I saw that.
Crazy.
Hey, I'm on your page with this one.
I know where you're going.
I'm with you.
I've got to be honest.
Yeah.
I mean, so the concern of, hey, I know courses are amped up for tournament week and all of
that. And there's plenty of times when TIO is a factor, but sometimes it seems like some of
the situations or scenarios that these guys are trying to build out in their mind is a
little contrived.
Yeah.
So let's deal with the pace of play related issues that we deal with with regards to CIOs and this place is no
different. We've got a huge amount of obligations to our broadcast partners to be able to showcase
the event and then we're obviously you've got all of the hospitality and public structures
that's needed to service the amount of people coming to watch. So we've got to position them
somewhere and every golf course is slightly different in terms of the amount of space that you've got and how close these structures get to play at
the players championship, which you obviously golf course that you're familiar with those
structures are largely positioned far enough away that don't cause us too much of an issue.
Now that's not always the case. And I think as we as sort of we pick apart sort of the
things that we can do to again again, to improve our pace,
reduce the number of rulings for things like TIOs, is that can we review certain venues
which is because we track every ruling and every golf tournament, so we know the troublesome
venues and troublesome holes is that can we position these structures differently further away so we're not constantly having rulings which take time.
And then the second element is that affect the outcome of a golf tournament.
Nothing more infuriates me and you and others watching the guys use it as a backstop.
We just don't want that.
Like a par five with water in front and guys are just like the one in Austin
always used to catch me. Detroit's one too. Yeah. So dangerous. You know, and it's, it's, it's,
it sort of compromises the integrity of the golf hole and the competition. So how do we
do a better job there of tackling that? And then the other aspect, which is, you know,
which is an absolute fan favorite of you is, is the actual drop. Yeah. You know, and I,
especially from seemingly the shot link towers, I seem to be a, a, a very hot.
tune you've been talking online about this.
I just, I'm just a good listener.
But now I think, and again, look, not wishing to get ahead of our skis here, but I think this,
that it's as troubling for you as it
is for us.
One of the questions that we get asked is, all right, tell me one of the rules that you
change right now if you have the chance.
Collectively, we did a really good job leading into 2019 to get rid of these tiki-taka penalties
and simplify the rules.
But TIO is something.
It's certainly on my hot, you know,
hot list is the number one item that we would like to to address and rewrite.
Is there ever a situation where you think like a grandstand is just straight up like if you hit
it there, you got to play it as it lies. You're not you're not getting TIO.
No.
that ever say no.
The dream is, you know, I think we do a good job, though. We record every ruling that we have each week in an app
and we try to identify where those are coming into play
so that we can eliminate them in future years.
It was poorly placed for one reason or another.
It impacted the golf tournament.
Let's get it out of there for next year.
That's what I think.
Like everyone thinks back to the Xander one that, um, at Wells
Fargo last year where he's under a tree and there's a, you know, a
cord from a shot link tower that was potentially in his way.
And so we talked about a lot at that point.
It was like, what does reform actually look like here?
And it, is it reasonable to say like, all right, if the rules
official can come in and say, you play this shot, if you hit the
cord, like then we can play the shot, if you hit the cord, like then we
can, you know, play the shot. And if it hits the cord, we can
replay it and then get a drop from there. But if not, like,
I'd be awesome as a viewer. Yeah, like that seems, you know,
something like that for the ones that are when the when the
towers in the way is more more of an issue, I think, then then
you're swinging.
I'm from a rules, rules perspective, which was somewhat
troubled, particularly when when, and again, my hands are Then your swing being restricted. And I think that's where, from a rules perspective, we're somewhat troubled.
Particularly when, and again, where
hands are tied in terms of the way the rule is written,
is that an object which is on the guy's line of play
and on a direct line between him and the hole,
but he's hitting the ball 150 feet above it.
And there's no way that at any point at elite level, this thing is going to come into play. But we still have no choice but to give the player the listening and we will you know always continue to explore different ways for different rules to work. It's basically like what is the line of reasonable
versus not reasonable. It's awesome. Well we appreciate you coming in to Thunderdome
here and getting, see that wasn't too bad. We know you guys got a busy week as well so
thanks for your time really appreciate the insight into all this and helping
us helping us settle some of this. Looking forward to next year we will be
watching very closely. Looking forward to Tori too to see how you guys set up the golf course at Tory
like for a second event and getting a different look at it and stuff too. So stoked to see you
guys cook a little bit there. Your old school name for that carnage. Not even carnage like just,
you know, hey moving up a tee box or like a different presentation. Yeah. You know, so cool.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thanks.
What do you think, T.C.?
Listen, it's the reasonable logical professionals.
It's not that sounds fun.
The reasonable and logical.
I mean, Cox is one of my favorite people in golf.
Exactly.
We've learned a lot, I think, from just spending some time with guys like them,
you know, watching them set up golf courses, driving us around.
I've gotten to drive around with Coxie and watch him set up the players and just the
thoughts that go into like four days of pin positions that go into it, what tees might
move here. The wind is going to be out of the East on Friday.
Then we got a plan for the pin on Thursday to not be blah, blah, blah. It's really, there's
a lot that goes through.
Or even like signage of, hey, you know what, this is the title sponsor. Or like, you know,
history. Hey, this is the 40th anniversary of this tournament. This guy won here. We
really want to use that pin position for Sunday. Yeah, it was interesting. Neil and I were,
we were rolling around with Coxy during the Fitzpatrick driver ruling out of BMW. Just basically rolling balls around the greens at different
whole locations and stuff. And yeah, it's fascinating all the variables and all the
details that go into it. So does the pay-supply stuff check out for you?
It does. I mean, it's definitely encouraging to hear him say, hey, like, listen,
this, this is a bridge year. Like, we know we got to get through it. And next year, hold
us to it. Like this is, you know, but I think the thing is, it's never been you don't enforce
basically, it's like, a, we don't know what the, what the enforcement is communicating that they're enforcing it. And then B, I think the penalty or the enforcement just isn't strong enough.
Right?
Of like these guys, 10 violations and then they get a $50,000 fine.
Like, all right, cool.
That's more valuable than anything to have that extra time winning,
trying to win a million dollars
or, you know, 1.5 million. What's up? No better way to transition from the rules officials of the
PGA tour to our guy Roger Steel is joining us now. What's going on, man? I'm just, you gotta be tired.
You're every now, but I'm still living the dream though, man. So I guess being tired makes sense.
You know, it is dreamlike state that I tend to exist in. So, no, this is this fire this week. You've been to I saw you were in Miami. Yeah. And then you did
TGL and four corners off. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. When did you get in here? Yesterday. So we went.
So we went Miami. No, no, no. So we did rehearsal for TGL and Palm Beach Beach Gardens Miami is some with Manny Machado. He's down there
That was dope. You know what I mean? I went back did the match then drove back to Miami to catch a direct flight here
The longest domestic flight i've ever been on
Uh, and now we're here kicking it with you all
I mean, you probably already got that premiere 1k locked up for life
Like when I started sitting down and I lose my status, that's gonna hurt.
Like, oh, these years I gave y'all.
I want to get to a lot of TGL stuff because you're obviously what are you?
Chief Influencing Officer?
Is that your is that your title there?
I mean, they floated a few different things.
I'm trying to see what sticks, man.
He's the executive chef.
He's just
I want to be pigeonholed before we get there. What's your experience with
pebble been out here before? Is this? Oh, I've been out here a
bunch of times. Yeah, I remember. So I came out here
first, you know, probably about four or five years ago, my
second time out here, though, I got to bring my dad. That was
huge. And I remember growing up, my dad used to always talk
about like, man, I want to go remember growing up, my dad used to always talk about
like, man, I want to go to Pebble, but it's so expensive.
And we did this thing with the Hunter Hole hike
and they had like an incentive trip out here.
And so, you know, we raised a bunch of money
and then I got to bring my dad to have an experience out here
and it was life-changing.
Like the bonds, like our bond,
because he really wasn't bought in on the social media stuff up until that point. What do you do? So how are you making money?
All of this is so confusing to me, man. I just don't the cameras in the end.
So, uh, you're not free old school. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like I pull a can like he's
the most personable guy ever. I pull a camera. He felt like I'm about to snitch
on him. But no, I'm not going to cancel. Yeah. I promise. I'm not going to get you in trouble. I promise. But yeah, so so we came out here with my
dad, you know, I've taken a few
other trips out here. I've seen
every, you know, combination of
weather conditions. But one of
my favorite places on earth,
man, this is a special, special
place.
Take us inside the arena for
TGL. What's the very first one?
Are you anxious? This is
different than basically what
anybody has done, but
definitely different for
anything you've done. Take us to that very first time. I'm excited. I'm excited. I'm just like, yo, this is a big swing. If it misses, whatever, you know, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm
just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm just like, I'm that we all weren't gonna leave better from that. It wasn't, there was nothing half-assed about the effort.
You know what I mean?
So I'm just like, yo, this is a big swing.
If it misses, whatever, you know?
But we have rehearsed that so much
and we have put so much effort into like,
you know, modifying things
and what's gonna feel good in arena,
what's gonna go on the broadcast.
And like, what you don't realize is,
it's really like two different shows
that you kind of get like the broadcast
versus the in arena there.
That was my biggest takeaway going to the media day was oh my gosh
Like these people can't hear anything that's going on on the telecast right?
That's where you come in right trying to keep the energy up trying to close the gaps
You know what I mean? Make sure people understand who's playing what shot who's up next commercial breaks trying to make sure everybody's having fun
You know so this is but I just thought that everything was so well thought out,
even to the order of the matches, right?
The first one, don't throw Tiger and Rory at them right away.
Let's just get one out there.
People gonna be hype about just seeing it.
Then you lay your Tiger in there, see how that one went.
And then you wait, let it breathe a little bit, see how some some of the other teams do then bring it together for a big match and I just thought that from you know
from from all of the technology that went into it uh and just how they paced everything how they
rehearsed everything it was I felt comfortable the whole time you know I just I knew I knew it was
going to be successful I just didn't know how the success was you know what what form the success
was going to take. Who surprised you player wise that they've just, you know, like, obviously we knew Billy was going
to be, it was going to be the perfect canvas for him. What'd you think of his dirty bird?
How do you, it was solid, bro. It was solid. It was solid. I enjoyed it. I think he was trying
to rush through it. He was trying to get it over with. He was gone. I wish I wasn't wearing this
shirt. I'm committed. I'm committed. He was bouncing quick. But who, I mean, like, so we knew going in that Billy was
going to thrive in that environment. Yeah. Who, who were you unsure on that they've just totally.
Not unsure, but I think that the two stars right now for me are Shane Lowry and Lou Vic. Like,
Lou Vic, first of all, the walk- up songs. I'm a hip hop fan.
Lou Vic had a bunch of future plan. I don't know if y'all, you know,
so then I'm like, I'm looking up at the DJ like who put on this future for
Lou V and then I shot him a DM after the match. I'm like, bro, are you a
future fan? He was like, yeah, big future fan. Top three favorite player
now, man. Just shot up the ranks you know.
Well then Rory had all the Drake stuff which kind of felt like a political statement.
It's a volatile situation right now man.
He's the Drake he likes Drake.
Well that's what I know he's kind of tries to have a foot in each can thing right now.
Rory my god man.
DJ's a huge Kendrick guy so I don't know if you guys are.
I wouldn't say huge.
I mean if I got to pick one, I think I'm going to.
Why?
I just, yeah.
I highly doubt that you understand 50% of the things
that Kendrick is seeing in his music.
Why is that?
It's just too, it's too complex, bro.
You need to watch like an hour long documentary
to understand everything.
That's what I do.
We don't need to go there,
but you ever listen to the Dissect podcast?
No.
Oh, it's phenomenal, man.
They go through like all of his records line by line.
It's cool. I listen to- You weren't expecting that. I listen to- You weren't ready for that. You're an hour long podcast. Oh, it's phenomenal, man. They go through like all of his records line by line. It's awesome. I listen to our podcast. I understand the three minute song. Yeah. Is that what you're
asking me to do? You have kids now. You can't be doing that man. You're on planes non-stop.
You gotta see what I got on the plane. Okay. No, I'm a, I'm a, I'm a big Kendrick fan,
big Drake fan. I just think that Drake has done a very good job of walking us through what success feels like.
Ask Coxie and Gary about what they thought of the Drake and Lamar.
You missed opportunity.
That could be great content.
Any matchups you're looking forward to, especially in TGL?
I just I don't I don't know if they're particular matchups.
I think I'm looking forward to the players getting more and more comfortable,
which is like the flow of things.
The fact that the crowd is even there, and just them being guys,
playing some money games with each other.
I want the comfort level to get higher and higher as the season progresses.
And I think that as the stakes get higher, we get into the postseason,
things will just feel better and better.
So Blinks is coming, baby.
I'm coming.
There's, are you, are you, uh, like prohibited from having a squad or do you?
I mean, not necessarily, but it's probably advisable that I stayed neutral, you know,
that's the job security reasons. I think I should, you know, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like,
I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like,
I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like,
I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like,
I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like,
I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like,
I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like, I'm not going to be like,
I'm not going to be like, I'm not going or eight times while I've been, I've watched all three, seven or eight times
while I'm sitting there, I'm just, or four, whatever,
I've watched all four.
Where I'm sitting there and I'm just like,
this is incredible that this exists, man.
And I feel like being inside the arena,
are you noticing any of that or are you just
focused on the task at hand?
Because the whole thing, it's just very funny to me,
like the entire concept.
Tiger comes out to, I have Tiger no intro steam, all this stuff.
He's like tapping up Will in the hallway.
Like that is surreal.
Come on, let's cook it.
Let's cook it.
Think about what did y'all think about that?
Before you get to your question, what did you think about the the tiger?
The intro, this intro for Tiger?
I didn't notice it at the time that there wasn't any like voiceover, but it just it worked.
It was like, all right, what are they going to do for Tiger? I would do something. That's where I was. I was thinking notice it at the time that there wasn't any like, yeah, what's over, but it just it worked. It was like,
alright, what are they gonna do for Tiger? I was something
that's where I was. I was thinking about it for days.
We're a man that needs to like introduction. Give him no
demand that needs no introduction. Give him no
introduction. I was just thinking about the walkout song
because I was like this guy that we have tried for going on 30
years to just learn something about trying to understand try
to understand him try to get inside his head
I'm like he has to sit there like pick a walkout song and that is the funniest fucking thing I've ever
Ever thought about it. I was like, what is he gonna because you know, you hear the stories about him going down
Magnolia Lane listen to like Quad City, you know Quad City DJs
You hear like, you know, I'm friends with Kid Rock over a tiger job. What is he gonna pick?
Yeah, that could have went a lot of different ways should have done the Creed
halftime show. Can you get higher? I should have came in
from the rafters. I think that's been co-opted by the Rangers
though. You know, that's that's a Texas song now. It's just it's
very complicated.
On the raft is crazy. That's okay. All right. All right.
Well, what I was gonna say was like, especially think about
your background is like, somewhat similar, you know, a couple of Midwestern, Illinois, Central Illinois engineering students.
And then going to like now you're announcing in a, in a arena of like simulator golf league with Tiger Woods is just like so funny to me that that jump is like it makes no sense. the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the the I do think that, you know, it's inspiring that there is like a progression beyond just straight social media
influencer stuff, you know what I mean? And it's like, this is the first time I feel like I have, well, not the first time
because we do some stuff with CBS and, but I feel like this is a real, like I'm a part of something very, very real.
You know, I'm a part of like a real effort to do something different in a space. And the reverberations of success here, like it's crazy, right?
You start thinking about like a bunch of these,
so far centers popping up all over the country and, like all of us meeting up and
having a match between each other like in this, it's just,
I think that the way that golf is transitioning and
the way that golf is uniquely positioned to leverage
technology is really being flexed right now and to be on the forefront of that is, yeah,
big resume.
You got like a mini sofa center in your basement now.
Oh yeah, bro.
You know, I have to become one with the technology.
Bro, I just, like once I was sitting looking out the window, just be like, God, I wish
I could just swing somewhere.
Bro, it's a game changer though just swing somewhere. It's so cool.
It's a game changer though, dog.
Having a sim in your house.
I can't believe none of y'all have sims.
I just ordered a net.
I live in Florida.
I can just.
What's up?
Okay, never mind.
Never mind.
Watching your Instagram story, building your sim.
I was like, fuck, man, I got to build a net.
So I ordered a net.
I got a mat.
I got my Gs.
I am flying.
I am fluent.
Yeah, promo code Raj. I'm out right now. Pr am flying. I influence you. Yeah, you think promo code promo code right now.
Promo code Raj 20.
20% off your net recoup that
attribution.
I'm curious on
on TGF front.
What have you been a part of?
Or what are the conversations
like on? All right, we know it's
a startup. We know we're just
getting started. How can we
improve? Like what's what's kind
of on the radar of like, all
right, if we can get this better
than this takes it from here to
even here? I don't. It's not like then, you know, if we can get this better, then this takes it from here to even here.
I don't it's not like then, you know, and I'm not I don't have a seat at that table, Sally.
Thank you for thinking that I'm pretty tall of that type of information.
But to me, the things that I see are just minor tweaks as far as how do we make the broadcast and the in-house experience more cohesive?
Yeah. You know, because I do think that as much as I, you know, do my best to keep everybody informed, I think that, you know, the house getting more information from the players real time.
And just more elements from the broadcast and so they're, they're bringing more things to house, they're figuring out more ways to keep the fans involved like during breaks, keep them more informed like thinking through different media, you know, the opportunity to just educate better. I think it's a question that I asked myself and I wanted to pose to you all because smartest people in golf I feel
but like what do you do you
think that TGL
does TGL get better
if you integrate
athletes and entertainers
and you know
you know you're not going to
be able to do that.
You know, you're not going to
be able to do that. You know, you're not going to be able to do that. TGL, does TGL get better if you integrate athletes and entertainers like more integrally
to the, like to how it's played or maybe that like caddy position or something like, where
do you think the integration of entertainment into TGL?
I think what's really interesting about that question is like the Kizner of it
all. Yeah. Right. Like you were there Monday and weirdly,
like some of the electricity tuning in Monday was like, is he going to play bad?
What's it going to, what's it going to be like? And that's where I'm almost like,
you can get kind of numb to just,
here's the best players in the world and they hit it to 15 feet again.
15 feet again.
The solids always put forward,
like you want to talk about an interesting tie
into a PGA Tour event, put a 10 handicap,
put a regular scratch golfer and put a 20 handicap out there.
And have them play.
And you can do the same thing, like even during
the commercial breaks, we're like,
all right, we're going to have this guy play a hole
and like show you like, like there's real wrong. There's real
downside. So that's to answer your question is where I'm like, man, I think one of the
strongest assets is like unpredictability. Yeah. You know, and it's, it's not a PGA tour
event where like you're going to have to worry about guys banging balls off spectators heads.
It's like you can have, you know, two planks might be. Well, that's true. Other than that one bunker shot,
you can have, uh, you can have celebrities or athletes or whoever out there. Like I,
the best idea I think I've heard is almost a mix on the teams of like you have Ludwig and,
you know, Steph Curry, of course is in season, but like a player like that, that is,
yeah, max roasted max really lift you up about that. Steph Curry out there.
Yeah, Max roasted me. Max really lit you up about that.
We have Steph Curry out there.
He's like, play the blazers.
But you know what I mean?
Like having a mix of those guys on each team I think is really fun.
My question for you, how, like these triple headers, how are you going to keep your energy
level off for six, seven hours?
I haven't even started to process that yet.
You know, I'm, I know it's coming.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Haven't even opened that door.
I haven't even just like, it's there. It's, you know, it's something we got to address. You know. Haven't even opened that door. I haven't even just like it's there.
It's you know, we got to address, you know what I mean?
It's like how I approach dental work, you know, it's just like, I know it's lingering.
I gotta get this crown bro.
Think about that the morning of.
Yeah, so kind of compartmentalizing that part of it, but I think it'll be fine.
What was, what was Monday like?
I mean, Rory and Tiger and the playoff and it just kind of felt like it started to soar there
for a little while.
No, it was electric, man.
It was, I mean, I don't know how it came across.
It was very entertaining.
Yeah, it was electric.
I thought the third match kind of
a little felt a little bit flat.
It didn't have a lot of elements.
Nobody threw a hammer.
That was all crazy, dog.
This cool man didn't throw the hammer.
That's wild.
The hammer's kind of tricky, though.
And you got Arthur blank in attendance,
founded Home Depot, the hammer.
It's kind of like you're almost the hammer might need tweaked a
little bit because there's very real incentive to hold on to it.
Right? Like if you're ahead, you don't want to hand it to the
other team and get the possibility that they can flip
two points on you. And like there's, you know, you don't want to throw it away too easy because
they, it's easy to concede, like, you know, it was thrown on, on Monday.
Um, by June, they concede it like, Oh, I was gonna lose it anyway.
I'll leave the whole, and I get out there.
What up?
That might need a little bit of tweaking, but that kind of goes in that category
of, ah, we're figuring it out.
We're experimenting.
So we're broke.
We're, we're supposed to be having fun out there.
It, that's the biggest key.
I think if the players have fun, the broadcast is going to be having fun out there. That's the biggest key. I think if the players have fun
The bright is gonna be entertaining
Doesn't need to be close but like that the first one was like these guys are having fun
And then it's gonna be naturally competitive as the season goes along and like these guys really ramp up like oh shit
It's playoff exactly which I think to your point is like yeah when when that switch flips when it's like, oh, we're just having fun
We're having fun. We're having fun. Like, okay, now wait, actually, this is kind of
is he going to make this putter? Not is the that's the secret sauce. I think that's when
it's at his best.
I also think that like, you know, that third match, you know, for a lot of people are still
worried about embarrassing themselves. Like the players I feel are worried about saying
the wrong things. And you know what I mean? They just, they don't know how their personality
is gonna show up there.
So it's like, well, I could just not say anything.
You know what I mean?
And not get in any trouble.
But so I think that there is just a level of comfort
and buy-in that we still waiting on from the players
that I think, you know,
time throughout the season is gonna solve.
I think we'll get more competition, more comfort,
better bands, a better dialogue,
and just people understanding the spirit of it. you know, like almost like a slam ball type
situation. Like, yo, just don't, bro. Those are our favorite. They know those guys started
to slam ball without the, without the blown up ACL. Just blowing up their knees. And there's a
lot of real physical injury. And they tried to bring it back and people were, we could do a whole
slam ball podcast. T.C. that really, man, doing some dope stuff with AT&T. We just did like a really cool
thing out there on 17. So they got this thing birdies for
students. Every birdie that gets made on 17 AT&T is donated
like five grand. So they let me go out there talk about it and I
got to try to make the first birdie green. What did you hear
the green? What? I clearly heard what you said.
I don't understand what you're saying.
Not my first.
I got a fucking simulator.
OK, OK.
My name on my bag.
A bit more than that.
Oh, for a month and a half.
A bit more clarity, though.
They gave me 10 chances.
I got I got 10.
What do you what do you set the over under?
How many birdies?
That's a tall like.
I mean, from the from the amateur
teams from Penn. OK, so what?
Like 150 yards. You said what?
You got two birdies.
No, no, just to get one.
How many chances to get?
Oh, I bet you got it on your third try.
I was gonna say third.
You think third? Yeah, third.
So you're a big game player, man.
Yeah. OK, all right.
I'm not going to ruin it, but
I'm not going to answer. but I'm not gonna answer.
But I mean, it was great.
I just did that to curry favor because I could see that you were about to harass me if I
if I went higher than three.
I was like, I bet I'm bailing on how pumped you and Tiger got that shot clock violation.
Again, just truly like words.
I can't fast player words.
I just can't believe are coming out of my bag.
You guys see when Tiger got that shot clock violation
in the simulator league the other day?
That's incredible.
And then there's when he threw the hammer
presented by Fed, delivered by FedEx.
Yeah, I was a little bit sad in that moment.
There was sadness.
I felt that Tiger was really locking in
and trying to make a putt
to just have that sound go off pre-putt.
Like I just, if I was controlling the clock,
I'm like, let's slow this down. I don't know why they call timeout. We don't have a mic. We needed a mic on
you for after they hit a tee shot. Cause I know there's gotta be a little scoff every time like
180 ball speed pops up on that screen. I legitimately want to see you play the course.
Like going back to Castle Pines. Yeah. We're playing the Pro Am and Roger hits it. 18 is like, was what, like 380 from the teams we were playing?
He hit it to five feet.
That was altitude though.
Yeah, altitude.
That was the craziest drive of my life.
And then you made the putt.
Yeah, that was crazy.
That was crazy.
Which made up for the first time we were there when I think you hit it down on that stage
where like, uh, Country music players were playing. When you come out here, like, like anybody you're, you're, you're into this week or you've,
you've been like, you know what?
I haven't seen that guy play a whole lot.
I want to, I want to watch him just swing wise.
Louie about to walk by right now, like heavy on the train, bro.
Heavy on the train.
Yeah.
But I also like for tempo reason, I'm selfish as well, but I love
watching Jake Naps swing like bro that that transition and
just, you know, I I typically like to watch players that make
me a better golfer. I'm my own favorite. So, you know, it's
just those types of players. Are you like a big swing geek?
Like, do you get really deep into like positions and how to
generate more speed or you just just come naturally? No, I like I make small. Because for people that don't know, your ball speed is,
are you pushing like 190?
Yeah, yeah, like 190.
He touched over 200 the other day.
Yeah, I hit that.
I mean, but that's, I have a high rib injury
as a result of that video.
Kids, everything that you do.
Possibly an intracostal.
Yeah, I'm just saying kids.
Might be a Xander trying to give you and Xander
something to talk about.
No, no, no.
I'm serious.
Oh yeah, bro, me too, man. Oh, yeah.
Oh, you like future?
Yeah.
I like it.
Hey, y'all relax.
But no, but seriously, but yeah, the ball speed is up there,
but I'm trying to, I'm really trying to become a better
golfer, you know what I mean?
What's your handicap these days?
I mean, whatever it is.
I'm still around scratch, floating around scratch. around. We're not playing a money game.
No, no, I'm around anything.
I'm not playing anybody for money, but it's you seen the high bro.
You seen the highs and the lows.
I've seen the highs and the lows and there's a lot of highs man.
High scores.
No, like just straight like you're making it like your putting's good. The chipping is really good.
Which yeah, it's impressive, man.
Remember that first time we played out at the BMW?
Yeah, I waxed you.
You waxed me.
It was a lot of things.
Took that personally.
The Rory shock was, the Rory effect was real.
Yeah, you were in your head.
I was like, how do I-
You never had a hat on the back nine.
I know, yeah.
He was cursing, making me mad at myself.
Like it was just.
It was too much negativity.
So Roger's like my positivity advisor.
He's like my spiritual consultant of like, yo TC,
like you're too negative, you're too negative,
you're too negative.
I legitimately like, I've taken that to heart.
I was gonna ask, that was the first thing.
So I got to film when you guys played
at Casper Plains the first time. You guys any big disagreements going on? You know, because
you're always chirping him back at like, you know, what's what's going on with, you know, T.C. why
you feel about this way? Any big issues you guys are, you know, I don't know, and actually, like,
I look forward to your negativity because I've realized You know getting closer to you that I need more
activity in my life
No, I'm just saying when he's pissed off about something the world go around maybe I'll be a little bit more pissed off
It might be in my being like sometimes. I'm too cynical
You know, maybe sometimes you got to be a
little bit like maybe you're being naive on stuff or maybe Hey, is TIO corrupting professional
golf? You need to ask yourself that.
We had a big TIO moment last weekend. I mean in the match. I don't know what y'all felt
about that.
That's tough.
It's un-affordable. I mean, it's emulator golf.
Yeah.
It's literally a fake universe.
I want to shout out, we played that pro-am. Neil refused to take TIO after he blew it I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not
sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm not know how you knew where the flag was from that. Take us back to back to Atlanta, that tour championship,
the first creator classic participant in that you played quite well.
Yeah. What's what were the nerves and anxiety like ahead of that one?
I couldn't like, you know, I was kind of checking the what people were saying
about me before the match and it's like nobody really knew.
Like for haters.
I was looking for stuff and I was just like, like nobody expects Michael Jordan.
The pro. He's really Roger Steels. I was looking for stuff and I was just like bro like nobody
expects Michael Jordan.
Roger steals.
Who is Roger?
Alright, let's see what I'm
just saying.
Everybody's like who is this
Roger Steel guy?
He's a person.
He can't play golf.
He's at that.
Dude, I was your biggest cheer
leader that day too.
I'm like you wait.
You wait.
Thank you bro.
Thank you bro.
And it's just like but but there was so little expectation
placed on me.
It was just like, yo, if I shoot a 42, whatever,
but if I don't, you know what I mean?
What if I don't?
If I don't.
What if I make this putt?
If there's a couple putts that would have
lifted in instead of lift out, you were right there.
It was a well put together round.
And then I did, you know what?
I got there early enough, which was
crazy because you know, I'm normally like show up, hit three balls and go out there.
But I get there enough for like a tour caliber warm up. I go to the training truck. I'm like,
you know, doing all of the golf forever and stuff or whatever, you know what I mean? Doing
the little bands and whatever. And then we get out there on the course and it was just
the body felt so good. And I knew if I if you hit the fairway at East Lake, it's like the course you could just attack.
Just goes.
Yeah, so it was fire, man.
It was fire.
The expectations are high for me going forward, I feel, which I don't like necessarily.
But you know.
Set the bar high.
Yeah.
What did you shoot?
How many under did you shoot?
One under.
One under.
What were you expecting to be going
up against pros in the finale
there on the final hole? I did
did. Yeah, I did. I actually, I
mean, in our little pre the
little pre production meeting
that we had when they were kind
of explaining the rules and
stuff, I was like, yo, how are
we handling the playoff like if
uh you know if we all tied a
playoff hole and somebody
looked at me like Roger, I
really don't think you need to
be asking that question. Why don't you just I'm like, we got this, Roger, I really don't think you need to be asking that question.
I'm like, we got this. I don't really think that you need that information.
All right. All right.
No, but no, it was I think that I just allowed myself to have fun.
And I learned a lot about myself during that.
I think that winning at all costs is like a dope mentality for those who have that in them.
But I'm more I like to win when I'm enjoying myself.
And I think that if enjoyment is not like a precursor of, you know, how I'm feeling that day, I probably won't have a good result.
So I had just committed to having fun and then the rest kind of took care of itself. You know what I'm saying?
What else you got coming up? Anything exciting with you're like the most traveled man in golf these days? I mean, we don't keep, you know, trying, trying not to mess up those intros for TGL.
You know what I mean? Keep the energy high, keep the crowd hype.
Are y'all coming to any matches anytime soon?
OK, yeah, I need to.
These guys are down in Florida.
I'm going to be down like late February or March.
Any of y'all want to just jump down on the field and just run, you know, streak or anything?
Yeah, just, you know, any.
I'm encouraging. down on the field and just run, you know, streak or anything. Yeah, just, you know, any good.
We did a pod the other day about courses that we want to play in 2025.
Like the five courses you want to plan 2025.
And one of mine was, I just want to play the temple.
Like you said, only like four people have ever played it.
One of the most, like a lost golf course, one of the most, you know, unique clubs in all of golf. Kind of like, I mean, Sally played the composite course at Roe Melbourne,
the reversed old course and Augusta national in the same 12 months stretch.
Disgusting.
You know, I run good, but I would say the temple,
there's only dozens of people that have maybe played the temple ever.
You can't ask for an invite because they don't invite you to the temple.
You know, it's kind of a coming Augustus.
Should you really be talking about that?
Yeah, exactly.
One of those types of things.
Raj, this is great, man. Good to see you. I'll give you kind of a side weird handshake there.
It's always good catching up with you, Raj.
Appreciate you, boy.
Thank you very much for stopping by. Yeah, appreciate what you do online. I'm gonna go ahead and shake there. Uh it's always good
catching up with you guys.
Thank you very much for stopping
by. Yeah. Appreciate what you
do online. Hey, but uh I am
gonna play in that Myrtle
Beach queue. Really? Oh,
breaking news. That's where I
was. God, this could be tying a
lot of conversations together.
You know, we need to get a get a
guy in the field, man. Well,
okay, okay, okay. If the TGL
schedule permits and the powers
that be allow me to be
late to some things then I will
I'm he can sub in for you as
the MC at the TGL or he can
sub in for me at the queue as
well. But I'm just saying
though, I heard your name
floated up in the
conversation. I've not heard
that. Wow. People in room
talking about two rounds of
golf in the last three months.
Okay. But you got till March
bro. Yeah. Just okay. What do you you I mean would you ever do something like that?
The the Myrtle Beach
Qualifier. Yeah. I mean if I
get my game in shape, my
breaking news of the going up
and why is it so many like I
got at home. This is crazy,
man. I don't get time to play
golf anymore. Bro, just gear
up for a moment, bro. Let's
have a moment. I can try. I
can try. One of my aspirations
now is to finish dead last in the PGA Tour event. I can try. One of my aspirations. One of my aspirations now is to finish dead last in
the PJ tour. I just feel like that's like as a as a as an amateur golfer that is like the most that
is the highest honor. I'm not even joking. Like some like some tour events should like legitimately
give you a sponsor exemption. That would be that would be not joking. That's terribly irresponsible.
Somebody that does this for irresponsible, terribly irresponsible, but it would be that would be not joking. That's terribly irresponsible for somebody that does this for
a living.
Irresponsible. Terribly irresponsible. But it would be
entertaining. It would be totally entertaining.
Would watch.
Yes. It would be really awesome to watch.
DFL and the PJ Tour event in 25.
Incredible goal.
Neil, you've been home in Manolo. You guys just entered the
range.
TC, I want to, I want to, you know, we saw our guy, Cashmere
Keith walk out on the putting green here. We did a podcast
with him recently about, you know, all kinds of cuisine on the PGA Tour, all kinds
of some of his favorite spots to eat, an electric podcast.
Hundreds of his favorite spots to eat.
Was not expecting the reaction to that podcast that we got.
But one of the things that got mentioned was, of course, the most recent time TC went to
the tap room here at Pebble Beach.
I don't know if you've ever heard of somebody doing this, Rog.
He ordered two soups.
Three. I thought it was two. I think it was three. Maybe it was three. I did two at the same time.
And then I did a third one. Maybe that's what it was. Well, anyways, we decided to go back
yesterday to just see what kind of soups were on the menu, celebrate TC's, just openness to all
these different soups as a meal. I love soup. You do look like you appreciate it. I'm just looking at like, I mean that. You look like you're cold all the time. You're freezing man. You need warmth. Like you got a special connection with like seeking warmth.
So we sent TC back to the tap room yesterday to see what he could drum up soup wise and Cody here we go.
Try them all. I'm going to power rank them.
This is the soup of the day.
This is the lentil.
Very Scottish preparation.
Lentil with bacon.
I had this a lot in Scotland, not as much in the United States.
I think we're going to go with that second huge French onion guy. Lentil with bacon. Had this a lot in Scotland, not as much in the United States.
I think we're gonna go with that second huge French onion guy.
We're gonna do a taste all the way through though.
I love artichokes.
That should be the famous, like I know the chili is famous, that's the deal. We're in the artichoke capital of the world.
It's good soup.
It's good soup Billy, eat your soup.
Now we're gonna move on to the lentil with bacon.
That's fine.
That's gonna be like number four.
It's fine. This is the main event for me. You see the little melted cheese on the
Gruyere? We got some onion straws, onion strings. Good cheese, it's gooey, it's not too thick. How would that, talk to us how that would rank among other French onion soups.
It's up there.
It's up there.
Now this, you gotta introduce this.
This is their famous chili.
World famous chili right here.
We got some cheddar cheese on top,
really good preparation on the chives.
Listen, it's fine, I need to get a better piece of meat.
I'm going.
One, two, three, four. I'm going one two three four four. There you have it.
There you have it. I heard some people in the comments maybe getting at TC about not
palate cleansing between soups. That's fair. Completely throw out, make this a mistrial.
I'm sure TC will have no problem going back to the tap room. We're probably going to go
back. Maybe redo the test. But some interesting stuff there. Maybe an all time poll there from Roger, a guy who just looks like he likes soup.
I've never, never heard that.
You know, and that gator helps.
Of course, I have my guy, Randy and the partner strap boy, partnering crime Neil
back in here, Sally and TC are going to go roam around, see what they can drum up,
which is what you guys have been doing for the last hour.
So I hope you weren't just dicking around out there.
Did you find anything interesting that the people could like, can you take roam around, see what they can drum up, which is what you guys have been doing for the last hour. So I hope you weren't just dicking around out there.
Did you find anything interesting that the people could like, can you take us inside?
Ready? Take us inside your process when you come to an event like this.
Oh, God, just deeply uncomfortable.
Feel out of place.
Wonder what I'm doing here constantly.
Yes. Did you get your hands on a pin sheet?
No, we didn't find any pin sheets.
I'll tell you exactly what we did. Should we run through our, let's do it.
Our 40 minutes. You know, we got up, we left here.
Our guy Cody needed a hot coffee. So we walked down to the shops.
We've got to take care of the, of the Sarge producer behind the scenes. Come on.
By the first tee. We picked up some coffees. Uh, I walked through the hay,
the golf course to get down there. Really cool, right?
The starter was really cool. Right. The starter.
It's really cool.
We asked him, Hey, what's the fastest way down to the lodge?
He's like, if it was me, I'd walk right through the middle of this course.
He's like, that's kind of what we're thinking too, brother.
Scottish right to Rome situation.
Yeah.
Um, yeah, we got a shuttle ride back up though, because of course, you
know, it's uphill coming back.
Tell them you guys were the talent.
Well, we've got a couple observations. First shuttle driver. He said he'd take us anywhere. I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I's almost like an obligation. A little bit like,
I want to hear, do you mean that? Yeah. Just everybody. It feels like an obligation to say,
Hey, good morning. Hello. Which is nice. But also I don't know if I need everybody to say hello.
Okay. If you mean it, I'll take it. Okay. And so we didn't know if we felt good or bad about that.
Okay. Yeah. A little bit like in Hawaii and everyone. Disney World Vibe. Sure, okay. And so we didn't know if we felt good or bad about that. Okay.
It's a little bit like in Hawaii
and everyone's giving the Shaka.
Yeah, right.
We went to a ruba, they always had this handshake
where they go, you know, and then it's like.
I think that was just the 90s.
No.
But like, you know, in a ruba,
they always do that handshake.
Really?
And then, but if you're not really a local,
then you get like a really like lazy one.
It's like not a good,
you just, it makes you just feel like out of place.
So that was, that was one observation
That's put that on the board. Do you have any golf any golf? Yeah
So I got one for you step Strakha out there he
Laid the sod over his first wedge. Oh
Hit about an inch behind the balls. I thought it locked hitting next to Denny McCarthy, Denny turned and looked at him
They had a nice little moment, you know, it's just, hey, these guys are just like us.
Right now, you guys, you know.
Can I say I was out here yesterday?
And then he started flushing it.
Yeah, so Stronger started flushing it.
Didn't miss another shot.
Can I say I was out here yesterday?
And of course, a lot made of Sep deciding to shave the dome,
go full bald.
He was going no hat yesterday
and just scanning down the range,
just kind of like, you know,
tour player with the hat on, tour player with the hat on, tour player with, you know, who are player with a hat on tour player with a hat on tour player with a hat on big tour player with no hat
on bald head. It just was really striking, man. It looked like Goldberg out there or
something. What a play by him. If he went like all these Schneider Jans, just like,
you know what? I'm not going to wear a hat, no flow either. It would be, you know, a way
to market yourself. You'd have to lather that head up.
So much sunscreen.
We, we, we saw Ludwig, we can report this.
Is there, I don't know if there's breaking news music or not.
We asked him how he was feeling and he said, quote, better.
Yes.
He did not want to give us a handshake.
He gave us a pound.
Um, and we said, how you feeling?
And he said, better.
And so that we can put that on the record. Okay. I'm not sure where you're getting that.
Just feel the whoosh of the betting line. Anything else before you actually a general
observation. I have disappointed. We're seeing a couple of the nasty peros out here, a couple
amateurs grinding, very few amateurs on the range this
morning.
That's, that is interesting.
That's disappointing.
Usually you get a few of these pro guys.
It might just be about playing.
Yeah.
But no, but we were at the first tee.
No one's going out.
Maybe they're at Sly Glass.
The first tee at Pebble was a ghost town.
But I kind of wanted to know, like, I mean, if it's me, I'm out here.
Yeah.
Break of dawn.
Let's get it.
You know, big tone style. And I'm just a little disappointed.
So that was it, that was my third option.
I think that's three.
Okay.
You can take those.
Well, we asked you guys to get three and there's three.
That is a, guys, real quick break.
I want to thank our friends at AT&T.
AT&T has a new guarantee because most things in life
are not guaranteed.
One thing that is that you guys are going to get three outs.
Right. That is guaranteed.
Are you going to actually get the rental car you requested?
That's always a tough one.
Is your wedding going to turn out the way you dreamed, Randy?
It's sometimes it rains.
Yeah. Sometimes it's cold in Austin.
You know, you don't know.
Is someone going to make another pot of coffee in the break room?
You know, I know.
Are you going to do that?
Are you just going to be, you know, you were a guy? No, you didn't make the next pot for gonna do that. Are you just gonna be, you know, I think you were a guy. No,
you didn't make the next poverty for the next people. The last
of anything that's not yours. Okay. Don't do that in a world
guys where nothing is guaranteed. AT&T is bringing
something new to the table. AT&T is introducing a guarantee
with connectivity. You depend on deals you want, service you
deserve, or they'll make it right. That's a guarantee
If you want to know more about the AT&T guarantee head to

Details and DJ put a guarantee on this show. I told you he said electric good content You know, we're all right on the edge, but I think Raj helped induce a couple electrons in there. you, it's gonna be electric. Good content. And you know, we were right on the edge, but I think Rod's helped induce a couple electrons in there. You know, it was helpful.
Before we go too much further, I want to talk about something we did yesterday.
We got to, unbelievably, Solly was like, you know, hey, I've been working the phones, I've been seeing
who's around and Jim Nance wanted to know if we wanted to come over to his house and just chop it
up.
All right. I got a question. Yeah, sure. No, you please start. So I'll just tell the people that. Me, Neil,
Solly, ducked over to Jim Nance's house and he lives nearby here in Pebble Beach and
just jarring invite to get.
Very much so.
Humbling invite to get. Randy, I guess I'll turn it over to you for questions.
Full disclosure, when we were out here a couple years ago for the Women's Open,
Tron, myself, Cody got to have the same experience. So I kind of know what you were
getting into. And my question is, two questions. One, I know you guys were making the joke to hit
him or if he was going to hit you with a hello friends as you-
Of course. Open the front door and hit him.
Open the front door, saunters out almost having to
look like a with a wedge in hand. Yeah, it was great.
And I know my guy, Jim was on top of your names. He knew exactly when he saw you.
The guy's recall is no, I, I, I'm believable.
I've met him once before at the writer cup at whistling straights and I,
but I was quick to say, to introduce, re myself I put yeah I hate putting people in that position
like I'm not gonna I'm not testing anybody you know you shouldn't know my
name but he immediately was like yes been a long time since the Ryder Cup I
was like why are you honking me is this do you have but you know what game
sheet inside he kept kind of like saying we just did this recently we just did
this recently and he knew the specific dates of all the things that happened. It was like, I was at a dinner on November 13th, where this happened. And I was at, you know, I was calling this game on this day. It's just it's everything.
It really is incredible. It's nuts. It's incredible. So so yeah, walk us through. I mean, awesome experience. I'm sure. Did you get the house tour? Did we go back and hit some shots? What were we doing?
We might have even got more house tour than you guys.
It was unbelievable. I know.
Talk to him about the closet.
Yeah, he's kept all his game cards. So for both NCAA
basketball, football, like he does them by hand. A lot of
people now I think have them, somebody, you know, he's got a
lot of people helping him, but his game notes for everything are by hand and he has them all organized and we pulled out a few
random ones.
We just happened to pull out the NCAA final, UConn versus Georgia Tech in I want to say
it was like 2002 and it was like I remember that Georgia Tech team.
I was a big Georgia Tech basketball fan.
I was like, oh, Luke Shinsher.
He looked at me like, yeah, and then he rattles off Luke Shinshur's hometown in Australia. And I'm like, Jared Jack, Will Bynum, Ishmael
Muhammad. He was like, Oh, what a team. And he's like, they got their doors blown off.
And so we started, it was just like, I mean, he's just, he's a fan first. Like he loves,
loves the game, loves the stakes. He has a real emotional connection. It feels like with his work.
And I just find him to be a, a pretty fascinating guy to be around. Um,
just a hell of a setup. Yeah. Pretty sweet. Pretty sweet.
Just a hell of a setup. Should we talk about the car?
So I think this was publicized. I think that I found it, uh,
it was golf.com or golf digest or something, wrote an article about this,
but there was, he takes this kind of around into the garage,
he goes, oh, I gotta show you guys this.
Opens the garage door and there's like,
what looks like his car, kind of a normal everyday driver
and then over here there's like a big full-size GMC Yukon
from 2002 or something and he's like, check that out.
We're like, oh, rad man.
That got delivered yesterday. He's like, hold on, check this out. He opens it, oh, cool. Rad. And that's like that. That's just that. That got delivered yesterday. He's like,
hold on, check this out. He opens it up. You know,
the like door handle that you push out, you know,
to open the driver's side door all wrapped in duct tape and electrical tape.
He's like, like, what are we missing here, man? He goes,
does he ever hear the story about when Scotty Scheffler,
first time he went to the masters, they drove down to Augusta.
He is dad and the car broke.
Imagine Jim just sitting at yarns.
Unbelievable. And he's like, you know, the car broke down and Mr. Scheffler,
you know, had no way to get back home. So he went out on Washington Road. He had to buy a new car.
Car was totally dead. Had to get the family back home. He bought this GMC Yukon on Washington Road.
They drove it back home. He gives it to Scotty. Scotty
takes it to the University of Texas. He drives it throughout the beginning of his pro career
all over the corn ferry tour thing has 200,000 miles on it. In 20 whatever 20 22. The first
year Scotty won the Masters. He drove that from Texas to Augusta. He drove it down Magnolia
Lane. That's the car he's driving and he wins the Masters. Driving this car, drives it back home.
He goes, Nick, that car went up for a charity auction
to benefit a cause that both of them
are incredibly passionate about.
And I bought it, that's the car.
That's Scotty's car right there.
And we're like.
The best part is it was his car until like two months ago.
Which is a window into the number one golfer in the world.
It was like, yeah, car's not broken,
why would I get a new one?
But it was just. It's a liability. Like Scotty went in the Fed one golfer in the world. It's like, yeah, car's not broken. Why would I get a new one? But it was the liability.
Like Scotty went in the FedEx cup and at, you know,
all the talk about money and like, how do you, you know,
think about money?
Like that's why people have probably heard the story
about Scotty's, you know, SUV has been driving forever.
Our good friend Jim, now it's just parked in his garage.
It's like, yeah, maybe my son will drive it someday.
It's, you know, it's cool.
I do want one more thing.
So we did hit balls.
We got, we scared a couple of hole in. We said that all the video. Oh, yeah
I believe we got some footage of us doing just that
Is it a science it
Amazing how many of like actual gym dance lines I'm using Oh
It's Wednesday and this was just a moment ago. Oh my goodness what happened here?
I don't know.
Trevor, he just doesn't seem to have it today.
He had a good warm up.
A little cloud cover here but it's been a gorgeous day on the Monterey Peninsula.
We were just saying.
This shot right here. Uh here. This is lovely.
Seeing some beautiful golf shots and it's been a runaway performance at this point. The local kid.
Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh.
So there you have it.
You know, a great day.
Well, other takeaways.
Yeah, one, it was a God.
It was such a relatable moment.
So we get out to the back tee and we're, know about to start hitting these these balls and I'm sorry
Jim says hey, let me let's get some music going in here or
Immediately can't get the Sonos working and I was it was truly like honestly like my dad like no
We got to fix this right now
So he gets on the phone he said God, you know the they were just here to fix this
You know, so he takes like 10 minutes to try to fix the Sonos is great
I'm like we all want to be like, you know? So he takes like 10 minutes to try to fix the Sonos. And I'm like, we all want to be like,
hey Jim, it's all good.
You know, we're fine.
We're good.
He's like, no, we gotta do this now.
And I was like, hey, Jim, it's just like us.
Did it ever get up and working?
No, we ended up using it.
It's temporary, but then he just played it on his phone.
What was the playlist?
Oh, I mean, a lot of the Trump,
what is the Yarny Triumph of Man, the CBS sports,
a lot of that. And of course he's narrating, I mean, it's just, it's, it's a delight, man.
He's narrating the experience. It was,
he's not going to like a tool or maybe after we left.
Anybody scare it. Can you just explain real quick? He's got a board up.
Yeah. So he has a whole, a whole and one rock that has everybody who's made a whole and one.
It's the most famous podcaster in various in golf.
Right after Keech Mitchell walking by.
Sufi. So it wasn't a golf podcast. It was a suit podcast
that we did with Keith. So he's got a rock back there that of
all the people who've made home ones, you know, some serious
names on the biggest film Nicholson, it's like, Ooh, looked good. Dumbest question asked of the night was, I mean, Jim, I don't see your name on the wall.
I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like,
I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like,
I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like,
I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like,
I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like,
I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like,
I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I think it's like, I was editing that. All three of us did though. I think we all, you know, it was like, ooh, looked good.
Dumbest question to ask of the night was,
I mean, Jim, I don't see your name on the wall.
Do you have any home ones?
That's my house, man.
Yeah, that's unbecoming for him to put himself on the rock.
That was me.
So anyways, thank you to Jim for having us.
That was a true, like, not even bucket list.
It's not even something you put on your bucket list.
Well, but I'll also say this. Been to Monterey now, I don't know over the course of 10, 15 years,
like five or six times, never really been to a house. Like, you know, it felt like a local
experience, you know, and that was different than what you get from being around the grounds here
at Pebble. Yeah. Monterey has got to be one of the only places I've ever been where as the day,
like it's a day goes along, it's getting colder.
Is anybody getting colder?
Yes.
Did hear that.
Some of our brethren at AT&T were warning that it weirdly gets cold like midday.
And then it's kind of like if you don't like the weather, you certainly can wait 15 minutes.
And, you know, all right, guys, we still got a lot more to get to here.
So real quick,
Randy, we talked a lot of TGL. I just wanted to throw out to you. You,
you were on your honeymoon down in New Zealand.
I don't know if that's like a TGL hot market.
I tried to carve out some time with the, with the now wife and,
but this week we had kind of the pleasure of watching you watching TGL for the
first time.
And I just was wondering if you could do a couple of quick minutes on your
experience. Well, I'll tell you what, thank you.
Uh, what a week where I just have to say, I,
I recently watched the brutalist and I'm,
I'm trying to process that.
And then you throw me into this juke links versus Boston common
golf, like truly,
I'm not sure which one just struck me with awe more.
I don't know if I fully processed the TGL match.
I mean, it's just so much.
It's so much.
I was asking a ton of questions.
I feel like it was nice to get up to speed on some of the rules and
the green zone, the screen zone and all of that.
I couldn't believe that they build the grandstands into the-
Without the metaverse-ians, I don't understand that.
Right.
Empty grandstands is the only-
And then TIO in the metaverse is unbelievable.
The Shot Clock's fantastic.
Like the Shot Clock's fabulous.
It's real grass that they're hitting off of.
We can confirm.
Right? Did you know that?
Right?
The only thing I was a little disappointed was
I thought we were gonna get to see these actuators
with the green in action.
And it was gonna be some like.
I think it just spins.
Yeah, so a little disappointed on the green complex.
But I gotta say, we started filming the Ball-Know-R-Podcast
on our Trap Draw feed.
So I didn't get to see all the drama necessarily, but, uh,
conveniently didn't get to see my team's stunting. Just wow. A lot going on there.
First of all, let me just say, wow. Uh, well thank you for that. That's great.
I feel like we've got about 48 minutes left here and I feel like we should stop
delaying the inevitable. Let progress, let progress happen.
And I think we unveil
the Belugas Big Board. Can you please give the people...
We're going to get everyone in here. Grab a Pelican and sit on. We're going to get all
five in here to get through the Big Board.
We'd love for you to maybe give the people a little bit of an overview of what this is,
how this came about and what we're about to hear.
Sure. So we started last year right here at this table. I think we were a little stressed
out the night before we did this the first time. It was three hours. What are we going
to talk about? I was like, well, you guys want me to just rank the power, rank the field
from 80 to one. They're like, sure. And so this is my power rankings of how I think the
tournament will come out.
Again, just to set the table. Last year, I think there was a, not to air you out,
a build, good number of misspellings, a lot of missed players completely. Just, you know,
did you have any regrets of how last year went or anything you were trying to kind of tighten up?
Yeah, for sure. I spent my flight out here working on the big board. I think it's a little more dialed this year. After last year, did we, uh,
did we objectively look at how the big board did in comparing?
Uh,
strikes and gutters. I might have that Google sheets. Yeah. Yeah.
We can take that offline.
Key learnings.
Uh,
that would be a good thing to look at.
I mean, listen, I'm in the, it's kind of the year of the giraffe. Like I'm willing to stick my neck out. This is my power rank and I have notes for each one.
So let's see it.
Why don't we just get to it?
Let's do it.
Let's move on.
Let's go.
I'm going to get out.
We can guarantee to you, we're not going to interject unless we really feel like we
need.
Okay.
Uh, now it's supposed to be a field of 80.
It's actually 70.
I have 79 because Xander withdrew.
So I locked, listen, I locked the big board for our producers yesterday
at noon. So I did not get the, so you're going to have to figure out who I missed. Okay. That's,
that's the scavenger hunt for you guys. Okay. So at 79, at 79 I have Brendan Todd. Oh wow. Stinky data golf trend. Best
flutter in the world. Yeah but really putting is not a... I should have to tell the course.
78. But the last rank you should have to tell him to his face. 78. Mackenzie Hughes. No offense
to anybody but that's just a gut feel. Canadians are Canadians are not going to be happy. I know. I know. I hear you. 77. I am looking around. I think Mackenzie's playing
with Alex Smith. Potentially. That's great. But I don't know if that changes anything.
But my power ranking says he's 78. Jason Jade just walked by. He's going to like where he's
at on the billboard. So he can stick around. Billy Horschel, 77.
Wow.
Yes, streaky.
I feel like he burned too hot late last year.
I think there's too much screen golf going on.
I feel like he's been distracted.
One out from TGL, okay?
Okay.
76, Christian Bezadenhout, bad data golf trends here.
I can offer a little something here.
Bez flew right in front of me from Denver to
Monterey and front of the bus or back of the bus front of the bus. Okay. That's a good question.
I got a plus point upgrade. Shout out United. You wasted plus points on it.
No, they're going to expire. They're going to expire. Yeah. I had to do the same thing.
But my point is he's got like a two year old kid. That kid was,
it was medicine. Boom. Boom. He got his hands full this week great. I'm gonna tell you this right here
75 don't want to do it. Oh Lucas Glover don't want to just guts telling me it's not gonna be a good week
I got you guys gonna hate this one
I think he's got too much networking this week too many dinners Keith Mitchell
I have I have Keith at 74 Wow you waited till he was gone. No, I tell him to come on out
We talk about it. Do you see the outfit the key pad on today? I did he looked pretty disheveled when he walked in
73 we have the country music sensation Eric Cole
I'm gonna need to see signs of life. I'm gonna need to see a better album.
Ticket sales are down.
It's bad.
I wish they would have paired him
with an actual country music sensation.
That would have been great.
Trace Crow.
Trace Crow.
72, Adam Hadwin.
Stinky Golf Day to Trace.
Stinky, stinky.
No, no, have some,
there's more than two Canadians in the field, guys.
Just hold all feedback Canadians, Okay, we'll get there
Now I lost my spot 71 Davis Thompson, it just hasn't had a great start to the season that not
Reasoning there just hasn't had a great start to the 2025. That's that's in my notes
70 research
You know, I hate this, but Brian Harmon,
I just don't think he's going to be doing stuff this week.
Uh, it doesn't feel like a great fit here.
Um, now you tell me the roughs down, but it just always feels like a big ballpark. And just your gut out of it.
So, okay, fair enough.
So that might, we're worried about that one.
69, the unstable compound, Min Woo Lee.
Uh, he got in on fall points.
I don't really love like that. Are we sure he's good? Like, are we?
Not sure. Listen, I was talking about this last president's
cup. Okay, not sure. 68. I've got Jake Knapp. Not just don't
feel like the stats don't look great there. 67 Sam Stevens, big
week last week, maybe a let down a let down week for him. So
that's that's also had no hat on yesterday.
66, this one pains me, but young hitter emeritus Justin Lauer.
It's a bad, I know, but it's a bad course fit.
He's had, he's been cut here twice.
He's playing really good golf right now, but I don't think it's a good fit.
So that's where we're at. Um, 60, 65 Richard flower. He's sponsor sponsor exemption. Oh, I just, yeah. I don't, I don't
think that it's great. 60, 64. We've got Matthew Pavan. 2024 is over Matthew. He's the American
dream though. 2024 is over. 63, big tone.
We're gonna need to see proof of life.
Hasn't been playing well.
We saw proof of new life.
True, a lot going on.
A lot going on in the phenyl household.
New perspective.
62, and I feel pretty strongly about this one.
He looks over his shoulder.
No.
Oh, Muma is coming back.
No.
Is he 69?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Sungjae M will obviously disappear after a good week last year.
This normally I would pick like, oh, Sungjae is trending.
It's like, he'll just, I feel like he'll just decide to lay an egg.
Sungjae is just so many times.
Well, let me ask you this.
What's the point of this board?
Like, what are we identifying?
Is it predicting?
Yeah, finish? Like, finish? But it's not able to like, I like
to win. I feel like it's my power rankings of I think it's
how they're gonna finish how they're gonna finish. Yeah. I
mean, I don't like that one. Okay. Well, okay. But then I
then I get into like a little bit of for the content like you
don't just want to list like their official world golf ranking.
You know, it's like, yes, I feel like some guys are going to have a bad week.
Throw it back. Make these guys come up with this list.
Exactly. Maybe we should switch it up. All right.
Let's let's move on.
Sixty one, Shane Lowry, a very little experience at Pebble.
Everyone's going to say, oh, buddy, he's a mother.
He's from Ireland. Unsubscribe me from that.
He hasn't played here. Such a good day.
Like I don't think that that's not
before it's Cyprus on Monday.
He was my great. That's not the same course.
That's that's my horse this week.
Okay. 60 I've got Taylor Moore. Sure. 59 Patrick Rogers. I mean, maybe some stuff from
Stanford Stanford stuff, but like not not not really feeling great about it.
Second home game.
58 Eric Van Royen. Don't have a note on that.
57, Aaron Rye.
I even put a note, could move him down the list.
I just, yeah, don't feel like he,
it's not Detroit, you know, like.
Do you, is the list changing?
I thought you locked it.
No, no, I locked it, but I'm just,
these are notes I made on the plane as I was doing this.
Did he play great here last year?
Did he like top five?
Yeah. Yeah, well, this year, it's-ress to the it's 20, 25 I'm selling.
Um, 56, uh, Cody's going to hate this cam young.
You got to prove it to me, brother.
I got to see it.
Okay.
Um, stern, but fair.
55 Nico, etch a Varia seems to be playing good golf.
Uh, but I don't know.
I don't know if he's going to consistently play good golf.
Upset of the week that you nailed Echevarria.
That's incredible.
Sure.
You pronounce it different than Mav pronounced it.
54, I've got Cam Davis.
This is not Detroit.
Again, not doing it.
Lead ball striker, small greens.
53, Nick Dunlap.
Honestly, it feels like I couldn't potentially put him lower.
It feels like he's potentially put him lower feels like
he's either gonna win or he's you know or he's gonna not make the cut 52 crank
that soldier boy Kevin you you some of these guys you got to find a spot for
me I don't have a strong feeling on it we got step walking by here looks
awesome love the shape of the shaved head. The bald head. Welcome.
Welcome home.
Welcome to the squad.
Welcome home.
He's gonna like where he's at on the big board too.
So he should come back.
51, Victor.
Not quite ready for it yet.
We'll keep you posted.
Not this week, but I think we're gonna get
to the other end of the tunnel.
Do you think he listened to the Joe Mayo pod
and wanted to go back to Joe Mayo for the fifth time?
I don't know. He just walked by to use the restroom so we could ask him
50 Hideki
Hasn't played well or played often at pebble
49 Denny McCarthy a lot of grassy knolls out there
Yeah, but I don't think that's really one of the putting that where you separate here
That's true stuff on his mind Yeah, but I don't think that's really putting where you separate here. I think all those files just got declassified.
That's true.
He's got stuff on his mind.
I have a lot of stuff on my mind.
We're trying to keep a low pro.
48, Chris Kirk, always a sneaky unit in person.
He said yes, sir.
But then you hear he had like didn't play golf all fall.
Data golf, the trend line doesn't look good.
So you're trying to play left handed golf for 47.
I've got Siwo Kim, 46. You hate to do it to him. But, but the pro Max
Homa would be lower, would be lower, but he's had a T 14 and
a T seven at Pelley has good results here. This is a good,
good course fit for him. So 45 Andrew Novak, I gotta think he's
exhausted. You know, it's just been just a big week last week.
He's gonna take that personal. Well, Mav offered some insight about what he said, the adrenaline
that comes from winning for the first time. And you know, he's like, I can't imagine if
I had to play the next week. So yeah, we'll see how he didn't land.
I remember last year, I put I said thatavan was going to, he was like 80 because
of that.
He's going to be a let down week.
He went on to like top 10.
I was like, God damn it.
All right.
44 Austin Eckroat, 43 Steven Yeager.
44 for Eckroat.
Yes.
I got to see it.
You won twice last year.
Yeah, but I got to see it in 25.
This is new year.
Turn the page.
Not 24 anymore.
42 Jonathan Vegas played well at Tori. I gotta see it. I won twice last year. Yeah, but I gotta see it in 25. This is new year. Turn the page.
Not 24 anymore.
42, Jonathan Vegas played well at Torrey.
Sure.
So kind of middle of the field there.
I don't know what the...
I don't think this is his tempo though.
41, The Flusher, Harris English.
Right there.
I think he's chilling.
Just middle of the pack, in the Peloton, feeling good good. He battled he got sick the day after he won. So I feel even better
about that spot. I don't know must have been yeah it hit him after yesterday.
40 Ben Griffin I said could be lower in parentheses research didn't do that
research so I left him at 40. Where's Max Grason? Yeah. Oh, Max is going to love where he's at a big board.
Yeah. Right now. Come on in. He's going to love where he's at.
39 Tom Kim, YTK. I need now I did this before the TGL stuff.
He's got to be gas running around.
Yeah, exactly. He's like gas.
38. I got Justin Rose, team Rose, past champ.
Hasn't put a lot of golf right now though.
The world's oldest 12 year old.
Well, no, I said,
I can't decide if he's an immature 25 year old or a mature 12 year old.
That was the direct quote. Um, okay. Uh, 37, uh,
Mark Hubbard absolutely flushing it.
The trends on data golf look good, but he just can't putt.
Might be kind of a, when nobody can putt, maybe the putters rise up a little bit.
Unhoused hubs.
It feels.
I mean, what, what, what is there to, to sustain?
Is that just a hunch?
No, he's playing well lately.
That's the thing that that was based off of the data golf
like strokes game like trend line and
But he also can't putt and it's Poah. I don't think that's gonna change this week, but your point about if nobody can putt
Tip that I'm just I'm just remembering from the
Recesses of my brain you got engaged here. Oh, they're happy when I was working for the PJ tour
They're like, hey, I'm about to propose like can you take some photos? I was like, yeah, sure. It was right
behind 18th green. Love that. Okay. Happy place. Flip side. Maybe he's distracted because maybe
I think that was him. I'm like 90%. Uh, I've got 36 at Corey Connors. I just put in the Mendoza line.
I just kind of feel like he's, you know, we'll keep, he's been playing some golf. Yeah. And I
think that's a respectful place to put them, you know, and,
and Mav said it himself, central manipulator. Really? Well,
just he was manipulating the FedEx cup points.
Moving on 35. I got JJ spawn.
It feels like he might linger here in the, in the middle,
upper upper part of the Peloton on a new course, potentially a 34 Thomas D tree.
It could move them down.
Not really excited about it.
Your 30s.
Like you could just do a clean switch
or some some guys in your 50s and 60s and some guys in there.
But that wouldn't be as much fun.
All right, we're going to bring Max Grazerman here just for some reaction.
Just so you know,
Neil's running through his his this is called the Beluga's big board.
So we're power ranking the whole field right now.
We're at what number?
We were at 34.
It's Thomas Detry right now.
I assume I'm number one.
You haven't been mentioned yet.
Well, I don't wanna have to stick around for the whole time
but he's in, I'm just, boy, you're in the top 10, brother.
Yes, I got you at nine.
Think you're absolutely trending right now.
I'll take top ten.
Yeah.
Pretty good. That's pretty good. How's your week been going so far?
It's been tough to beat a week of Pebble. I would like the sun to come back out, but I think this is the last of the sun we've seen for the week.
Yeah.
It started great. Monday, Tuesday. I was going to go and play Spyglass, but I'm like, I got to go play Pebble because the weather is so good.
Any experience out here?
I did a buddy's trip here in September with a couple guys.
We played, actually played pebble and Spyglass practice rounds, I guess.
Move them up to number eight, maybe.
I got it. I actually got a text from Columbia University's
Athletic Director this morning and said to look out for Max Grazmer.
I said, I play with Max in a pro am big, big fan.
I did visit there. Yeah. Yeah. Fortunately, but your dad, your dad's a professor there was. I'm going to put it right in the same spot. It seems like maybe the best setup for impossible. Doesn't it?
Yeah, it's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup.
It's a good setup. It's a good setup. It's a good setup. It's a same spot. It seems like maybe the best setup for you possible. Doesn't it?
Yeah.
It seems like kind of a ball strikers course.
I've heard he's a pretty good ball striker.
I haven't seen a good result here though.
That's just that I'm saying T 31 last year.
It is a ball strikers course last year.
This is Tommy's first PGA tour event since BMW in August.
I've got 32 Adam Scott.
No course hasn't played here.
I moved these ball strikers first. I've got 32 Adam Scott.
No course hasn't played here.
I'll probably move these ball strikers further.
Hasn't played here.
He's not playing great right now.
He played great at TGL.
He hasn't played here much.
He didn't have a ton of results here on data golf.
You're not factoring his coming in hot off his TGL.
This is an unfair position to put the beluga in, to bring in an actual expert on this stuff.
I feel like I'm getting blindsided on it.
The first two names are just excellent ball strikers.
Yeah, well, you know what? I gotta make room in the top 10 for another excellent ball striker, all right?
Let's see, where? Now I'm out.
Out of Scott, you left.
31, Lee Hodges. I just said whatever, I don't have much on that.
He's just throwing you guys in again.
Roll Tide, I guess. Scott, Tommy
Fleetwood, like two of the best ball strikers. Sure. I've got Matt Fitzpatrick at 30. I
don't feel like Fitzpatrick doesn't plan all that well. Where'd you put Victor? Cause
he won the USA. I have Victor up in the fifties. 51. Well, I just said we're not quite ready
for Victor yet. It seems like he's still working on some stuff. That's a gut. That's a feeling. That's what the blue good does well. It's
stink with this. It's a new coach every morning. Does your mentality change during the week like this where there's no cut?
No, it is no. Oh yeah, it's a signature event. It's no cut. All right, thanks for reminding me.
This one's good. This one might get some people riled up. 29. You always kind of think about the cut, right?
Like, I don't know, like maybe Scottie doesn't think about the cut, but there's always like in the back of your mind, there's like a little thought about the cut.
Yeah, I feel like it changed a little bit, but I kind of go about my same game plan.
Speaking to the golf course, definitely a ball striker's course despite your picks.
There's a lot of ball strikers out here though.
I was surprised. They're all good.
They're all good.
I was surprised.
Pretty good.
Surprised how little drivers there are at Pebble, especially on the front nine.
You started, you definitely have more drivers on the back nine.
But like for me, it's, I think I hit one driver on the front at Pebble.
I wish we could have done this conversation on Monday.
So it's like, for me, it's like two iron on on one three wood on two. It's like a lot of like two
irons and three woods. I think it was like three, like even the par five, the one that goes down and
back up is at six. Yes. Like that one for me and my stats guys tell me it hit two iron off the tee.
Yeah. And then just just go two iron, two iron. It was down one the other day. So I went to iron four iron. Yeah. Is there any like, you're very good putter, right? Is there is
this weird when you like have to put on greens like things?
My stats guy was taught me on six, either hit two iron down the
fairway or last driver into the grandstand.
I think you would respect that.
Respect is one word.
It's really eating the whole animal.
No, your advantages like with your putter a lot of times, right?
Is a week like this where greens get a little bumpy, get a little chewed up, is that frustrating
for you?
Is it?
What's your thoughts on that?
Yeah, it's definitely frustrating.
I've asked a few different guys about how do they, California guys, how they prepare
on POA relative to other.
I've heard some people say add loft on the putter and
hit a little more up on it just to get the ball rolling a little quicker on the greens.
So I did add a degree of loft to my putter before Tori and I felt like the ball was rolling
better. Although when it's blowing 30, it's bumpy and the greens are 13 and a half on
the stimp. You're probably not going to make any putts. I really don't know how anyone
made putts last week. I'm attributing it to just absolutely pure luck.
Yeah, to be honest, because it was it was truly insane. Who were you playing with this
week? Russell Henley, my am partners, Ben Sutton, who's a great guy, kind of awake for
us. He's big in college sports. I think he helps run the college football playoff. And
then
I got some takes if yeah
And then Russell's partner is Stephen Reyes, so
I'm not sure right if he is that would be great. Hopefully he is that guy. So
All right. Let's get back to the board. You can also leave. Yeah
No, you're gonna like this one 29 Last week's or last year's champion Wyndham Clark the I'm a big fan of winning. I just don't think he's gonna play that good this week. Uh, no.
Eatin' your Cheerios or leaving the dishes in the sink.
He was a pretty easy roommate to be honest with you.
It's good to know.
Yeah.
That factors into the board.
That's good. That's good stuff.
Yeah. A little bit of a different player than he was then now.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Still as inconsistent. Just his ceiling's a little higher.
All right. So I feel like that...
Of the tracks.
The tracks. All right. 28. We got Ben on.
I just put feels fair
uh 20 but then he's got adam scott and
27 I got big bob mcintyre
Uh, i'm he's a lefty. I feel like lefties play pretty well here. I feel like maybe some some jet lag though
You know, I don't know if he's been where he's been. He's just flying over from from scotland
There's a lot of time zones. It seems like he should be number one with this weather. It's true. Yeah
So alright, maybe we could we could have put him up the board 26 saw his the gala
Seems like an ideal course fit
But I feel like that's why he might do something stupid to mess it up
And I just need to see it solid I need to see it
I feel like next time you make these picks maybe send them to me
I'll do like some rough draft a lot. Sure. Do you feel like he should be higher or lower? Yeah. Higher? Not
everybody can be up there. The roughs down, right? The rough is down. Yeah. There's not much. Now I
might be featured a few good putters a little bit too high, but 25, I got Nick Taylor, past champ.
Feels hot and cold. So it's hard for me to put them higher than that but you know yeah I think so I've got 24 I got Sam Burns also feels like I put them
higher doing but I don't know we will hot this early in the season no one
knows what anybody's been doing yeah see and that's what that's where the blue
is an asset to people okay I'm willing to put my picks out there before, before we know, before we
know. Um, 23 Rasmus Hogard. He see, how do you feel about that? No idea. He's a big fan
of Rasmus. This just feels so arbitrary. Yeah. How dare you, how dare you TC? Are you, are
you offended? These are proprietary models that I've put together. I'd love to see the back end on these models.
Max, Max, he's got a data guy.
I've got a data team helping me with this stuff.
I feel like less, you know, less rough.
Gross.
I feel like there's, I feel like something there.
I've got 22, I've got JT Poston.
I feel like he is like,
Powerful, pound, best player in the world.
PJ Tours, ETF.
He just keeps compounding, just, just slow growth year over year.
Good putter. Yeah, good putter, which I'm starting to learn.
Maybe it doesn't matter here, but that's, that's fine. Uh, 21.
I feel like I've been burned by this guy out here specifically at this course,
Shamus power. So I'm just going to put him at 21, 31,
T 15, T nine, T 38. Uh,
that's nice. The data just fill in the airwaves. There's just random comments
The data golf trend
But and and the you know views I do think it's a good podcast I would
Yeah, that's that's high praise how about that denny mccarthy giving us some intel for the big board there you go
Uh, but shames power data golf trend not great. I wanted to put him in the 70s, but I feel like
he always plays well here. All right, speed. Speed could be anywhere from one to 50. Speed is
going to finish 20th this week. I feel very strongly about that. Respectful. I did hear that
he has a lot of media obligations this week, not only as a HMT ambassador, but also as a sponsor exemption. So back of that in the models.
Yeah, I feel bad because that part of that's with us. So yeah. Yeah. And I just think he's
going to have a very respectable, uncompetitive T 20. I have Rory told us his speed is down.
I have Rory at 19. I love that. Well, I just feel like with the TGL stuff, you think it's higher or lower.
You don't love it. I mean, I think his floor is pretty fucking high. Yeah. This is real.
I put him in the top 10. I feel like he's in the top 20. We get a real golf too. 18.
I've got your playing competitor, Russell Henley. Not sneaky. Yeah. Sneaky. Like a solid,
not much course. He hasn't played a ton here But just one two weeks ago could be year the dogs keep stick around steps up a little higher on this list
Will's ala Taurus at 17. I feel like the sickness last week. I don't know if he's waiting rhythm
So greens, though, he's a good ball a great ball striker
So I've got Taylor Pendroth at 16. Exactly what I thought you were going to say.
And I feel like he's just been on the leaderboard a lot in the last year. Sneaky good,
hits it. It feels like he hits it a mile too. Um, I didn't like that placement.
Results wise. Yeah. If you go back and look, he's where we got, where we got Nico Echavarri at.
He was up in the fifties, I believe.
He's been playing good golf, but he's
tearing you down right now.
Yeah.
Ball striker talking really bad about it.
Listen, no offense to anyone.
I'm not talking bad.
I'm just, I'm going through my big board.
Uh, I've got 15, I've got Occha.
I feel like it might be, it feels like a
good course fit lefty.
Um, I don't know.
What's the data on the lefties?
I'm not saying you're wrong. I just, I've never thought of lefties. I can think course fit lefty. Um, I don't know. It's the data on the lefties. I'm not saying you're wrong. I just,
I've never thought of lefties that I think of one lefty.
Phil. That's about it. I don't know. Just like you said,
I'm just filling up the airwaves. Uh, 14 it's a signature event.
You know, I got my guy, Tom Hoagie, Hose coin.
Yeah. Small greens, man.
We picked him up in the pro after we dropped you off of the BMW. And I was like,
Tom, he's like, I'm playing off like he finishing in the top 20 in these signature events. I don't
understand it is I thought that was really funny. 13 I've got Ludwig. I'm worried about we've gotten
a quote that he feels quote better. So that's reported. We've reported that boots on the ground right
there. I'm still worried about him and how he feels. So I would put him on that future.
12. This is going to shock some people. I've got Gary Woodland sponsor exemption,
but he's been playing pretty good golf. Notably won a major here. So that was a sneaky one. Notably
won the U S open here as well. 11. I've got Keegan Bradley. He used to play fantastic
Okay, this is where I should have proofread the list this one is a mistake
He's missing a guy in the field. Yeah
Xander withdrew and so I anyway number 10. I got Doug Gimme I
And so I anyway, uh, number 10, I got Doug Gim. I, I know the notice. I got to move them down and I didn't move them down. So, so bring, yeah.
Yeah. That'll be the one balloon. It was like, Oh, if Doug Gim finishes 10th,
that'll be the story of the week. I didn't even know he's in the nine.
We have our very old Max Grazerman right here. I feel like you've been playing very good golf.
Uh, and then I've got eight, I've got Sebstraka.
It just feels like a good fit. God, he's just a baller, man.
He just always, I look at him and I'm like, how are you doing this? And he just always knew at the top of the board.
Yeah.
Just so consistent.
Doug Gibbons played the Pebble Beach program four times. Cut. Cut. T21WD.
I planned up. That was a mistake. Okay. You knew there was going to be a mistake on the board.
He admitted it. Yeah.
No, I saw that name was I got damn it.
I forgot to move Doug Gim's name back up the list.
And if he finishes good, Neil's going to be like,
I'm going to go to your playbook, T.C.
That's that's the way to do it.
Devin, I've got Colin Morkawa.
I'm going to be a great course for him.
Six. I have Matt McNeely.
I feel like he's got unfinished.
Do you think unfinished business here from California from nearby?
Good results here.
Just one. He feels like, yes.
A little worried, though.
He was he was in your chair earlier.
He was shivering. It's very cold.
It's very calm. I'm sure.
Yeah, I am, too.
It's colder on that side.
Guys, I've got JT.
I know we had a dust up with him here at this table last year.
He was pissed about his big post.
I'll be honest with you.
I played with him a little bit lately.
He's already he's been working his ass off and fun around at Zozo.
Fine around at AMEX.
And I mean, it is was next level ball striking.
Yes.
OK, for you guys are going to love this.
Bo Hosler. I almost, I,
I kind of have a weird feeling he might win it.
He's been sniffing around a lot lately.
Yeah. I guess he's a couple of guys. Oh guy. Yeah.
It's just his walk. He just limps around.
Yeah. Very interesting.
We were saying he's changed up with the visor and like this spiky hair and the
what's the good guy now. Yeah.
Are there any good coffee shops around though? Captain and stoker.
He does think you got to kind of play well last week cause that AMEX he definitely didn't play well. the Guys, I have Scotty Shuffler at three. Seems two spots too high. He's got Jason Day.
No, I know.
But it'd be no fun if I put Scotty at one.
I've got Patrick Cantlay at two and I have Jason Day at number one.
I think Jason Day is going to win this week.
That's my pick.
Wow.
It's kind of silence the critics a little bit on that last.
I feel like Jason Day has been playing very good.
He's got to feel at home in California with his outfits.
Yeah.
And it feels like a kind of course on his list
I don't like a resume. I feel like he should win here at some point
It's just can't figure out which one he didn't name. Yeah. Yeah, we could I that your guess is good as mine
I have no clue whoever filled in for Xander is basically who it is
Patent cuz I are see first all that's who it is. And he might be first alternate. I don't know
But I mean, yeah, I actually,
I think I saw him out on the range yesterday. Yeah. But you're saying he might be. So that's it.
That's the big board. It's a big board. Congratulations. Yeah. And that's good stuff. This is a big board.
Number nine right here. Appreciate you sitting on sitting in on it. Yeah. Uh, not great. Not great.
I've seen better big boards. Fair enough. But it was everyone have a big board by the way? No, these guys are too scared to do one.
We don't want to stick our neck out.
Yeah.
That's exactly right.
When Jason Day finishes last, we'll know whose fault it was.
That has happened to me in the past.
So there you go.
There's the Belugas big board, a tradition unlike any other.
Max, thanks for joining, man.
Good luck this week.
Good luck to you, Max.
Good to see you.
There you go.
Practice.
Go get it.
Finish ninth, I guess I guess yeah sorry to waste
your time that's right see you man man great job yeah I mean that was wonderful
the game is that's that's okay's, you gotta understand the strategy. You can't just do the straight, like, you know, some guys are gonna play poorly.
You gotta give the people something to talk about.
But that's so fun.
Don't let them bully you.
You can actually do the research, you know, put guys in the proper spot.
I did do a good amount of research.
The TCI just, I have a feeling, a gut feeling, I don't think that Tommy's gonna play that well.
And I don't think Adam Tommy's gonna play that well and
I don't think Adam Scott's gonna play that well and I was a proponent of the eye test I hate seeing
you guys exactly clashing yeah he's talking about going to the data I'm worried he's using too many
stats I think we're gonna be so invested with more gut than I and that's so interesting I know I think
I just I just think people's ears broke up with the Doug Gims though. There's so many people sitting at home
You are listen you should just kiss stans and some of this stuff go up into the into the 70s like oh
Yeah
Brendan Todd I don't like that. I got a great feel about JT this week as well. I really do
Yeah, I just think I feels like JT's worked really hard the last three months and it feels like a, I don't know,
a statement to get him a win out here on the West Coast.
T, at home a little bit here at the Pacific Ocean.
T, I know you don't have the field list in front of you,
but were there any pairings that really stuck out
that really tickled you?
Yeah, there were a few.
We've got...
I'm gonna try to pull this up. Yeah. Yeah, you've obviously got Alex Smith running around right there is right there
I forget who you said he's playing with it
It's about time to meet the ball now. We finally see some of these AMs on the on the range. Yeah
Yeah, I think DJ D's all
Out there. He's playing with what CEO gold
the ball now. We finally see some of these AMs on the on the range. Yeah. Yeah. I think DJ DeSalle out there. He's playing with what? See a golden sacks. Yeah. I've ever heard of it. We've
got I know that just for the people. Egon Durbin and Ben Griffin. It's a powerhouse powerhouse,
C-suite powerhouse right there. You've got Doug Gim and Larry Fitzgerald playing together.
Oh, God.
Maybe he's going to be sandbagging out there.
Larry's listed as a seven.
So, Doug, you might, on the Pro-Am leaderboard, if he finishes top 12 on the Pro-Am leaderboard,
I think he should count that.
Doug, for sure.
He might be getting some shots.
We've got Adam Hadwin playing with Josh Cronke, another Denver guy.
Shout out. JT and Condoleezza Rice, I did not know that. We've got Adam Hadwin playing with Josh Cronke another Denver guy
JT and condoleezza rice. I did not know that we got Ludwig playing with Jimmy Dunn
Heard up with Rory and Jeff Rhodes. I believe with TPG. I think we haven't maybe heard much from
We got the yeah the Riddler and column or a kawa
Charlie Charlie Allen and Brian Harmon, Tommy and Heidi Uberoff
playing together and then Keegan Bradley and the former chairman of CBS Sports,
John McManus playing together. Yeah, Condi and JT. We've got Denny McCarthy and Pat Monahan, I believe, of Train. Of Train.
We heard a lot of Train on PGL.
Tiger was playing to Train or something.
Yeah.
What else we got?
Harris Barton.
You played golf with him before.
He played with Woodland.
How cute is this?
Jay Monahan and Sam Kennedy, friends,
college buds playing together.
We got Willis Alatoros and Jay, and then Chris Kirk and Sam Kennedy playing together they're playing with we got Willis Alatorre and Jay and then Chris Kirk and Sam Kennedy playing together Ed
Hurley he playing with Sep Stu Francis former PGA tour or a USGA president
playing with Hideki we got Horschel and Brendan Todd with a couple of
Ponte Vedra guys Zalewski and have battle your girl, Mary Meeker.
Sure.
Trends report.
She's playing with Sam Stevens, Harry Hall playing with Mia Ham.
The, uh, the, the blue is big board takes a lot of inspiration from Mary Meeker's, uh, technology trends, annual trends report.
Uh, Neil, you're a warrior's guy.
Uh, Joe Lakeham playing with a country music sensation Eric Cole Sungjay Dallas or
He's playing with Fred purple who his swag just keeps getting better. Yeah big scar out here
Music sensation Eric Church playing with Sam Burns and they're paired up with JT Poston the postman with Palgasol
That's a man. That's a
power man with Paul Gasol. Wow. That's a, that's a power pairing. We got Wyndham paired up with Anthony
Noto, the CEO of SoFi. You want to say, I mean, I think he's in the most exclusive club in the world.
I need to confirm this with Anthony Noto, but he played football at West Point and I heard he
tore both ACLs in the same play, which is like the coolest. That's the biggest badge of honor ever. There's got to be video.
So I mean, I think he's, I, I, yeah.
And so I see, I need to confirm that with him because I think that's so sick.
Truly.
That's unbelievable.
Uh, come back and play golf.
Yeah.
We got big tone with Qualtrics, Ryan, uh, max home with Jeff Yang. We've got, Tone with Qualtrics Ryan, Max Holm with Jeff Yang. We've got DJ Desol and
Seamus Power.
Can't Lay and John Zito. John Zito is, of course, I think he's the co-president of Apollo.
I've never heard of it.
Ferris Brothers.
Such a nasty curveball.
We've got a few others. Philippe Lafont, things of that nature.
But I think, I think we kind of run down.
That's good stuff.
Not a lot of, not a lot of quarterbacks this year.
I know.
Did you say Bo and Steve Young?
Oh, I didn't say Bo and Steve Young.
Yeah.
That's interesting with the big board too.
That is.
Lefty mentality.
Yes.
Yeah.
Thank you, TC.
That's good.
That's good stuff.
Guys, we've got about 10 minutes left. left can take this in a lot of different directions
Of course, we want to go through, you know some actual picks at the end of this
Who do we some actual picks from us? I'm sorry
But before we get that let's let's let's just go through TC you asked this one last night
I really think there's a good question. What's one thing you have to do every time you come to this area?
I want to know one thing you have to do and one thing you've never done that you really want to do.
TC, I'll throw it to you first. Your question.
One thing you have to do is eat a bunch of soup.
That was a good line by Roger.
You actually look like a soup guy.
I still don't know what that means. I am a soup guy, but I just don't know what that means. No, that would be it.
Or, you know, not to co-op Neil's thing, but you got to go to the refuge.
One thing I haven't done, I've never played Spyglass before.
It's kind of the one I've never played.
You almost said Cyprus.
Yeah.
And like, I've never walked it during the tournament.
I've never really seen you get out there
Go check it out. So that'd be something for this afternoon. Yeah, truly just go around the nine holes out there. It's great
Well, you know, we go, of course
I you know would shout out the refuge to the outdoor hot and cold tub spa that we named our message board after but I got
Something else for you DG. You have to go to Los Amigos. Oh so good
I've the last five or six times I've been here
We've got there's this Mexican joint next to the Safeway. And I just
it's just that it's just great. I mean, yeah, food's fine. But
it's just like, no one's gonna, no one's gonna see us in there.
And I feel like we almost were kind of blown up. There were a
couple. I don't know if you guys noticed there were a couple
caddies that came in after us. I didn't see that. And they were
they sat at the but there's like three seats at the bar.
Maybe like, how you guys doing doing another year down? We're back.
We're my Luis, right? Yeah. Great to see you again. So they, yeah.
There's other people on this block. Yeah. Los Amigos, big fan.
One thing you haven't done out here.
I want to go to the Esalen Institute down the road and big sir. That's,
that's what I haven't done. That's good stuff. Uh, God, I'll, I'll shout out Los Amigos.
I think that's, that's really good. I mean, tap room is very cool. That's a,
that's a cool thing to check out that we haven't, I haven't done that yet though.
So I feel like I'm talking about school a little bit. The thing I haven't done.
I've never played pedal. I don't know if I'm.
Oh yeah. Me too.
I did either.
And we'll get into that tomorrow. I don't know if I'm. Oh yeah, me too. I haven't played it either. You and I haven't either. And it's all that.
And we'll get into that tomorrow.
The funniest part is it's like one of the courses
I probably walked all 18 holes like five or six times.
I'd also argue it's one of the courses that like being there
and walking it and watching others play it
is 80 to 90% of the experience ahead of playing it
more so than other courses.
Yeah.
I don't know if I could really describe why,
but like I had as much fun
watching Randy play that one day.
And you can skip one, you can skip, uh, 14, 15.
14 sick.
When the 14th green was totally unfair was that was like maybe
what I love golf the most.
That was great.
I want to give a shout out in Carmel to Bruno's market.
And the reason I want to, I actually went there during the women's open week,
but they've put up a statue of ball, no, or John Madden.
And he, I guess there's a little sign there that says, you know, John,
like nothing more on a Sunday morning than a hot coffee and the newspaper
and a bench right by the front door of Bruno's. And that's the stuff I'm about.
That's kind of like your, uh, and a pin sheet, you know,
getting to know the bartender's name, getting to become a regular.
I think you could take maybe some of that put in your notebook is sure,
you know, that Neil guy, man, he used to come, he sat at that table every Saturday
and he was here. I think that's a good,
the one thing I have not done. Uh, I think you might get down there today, TC,
but I've never walked the beach where everybody takes their dog and you know, proud dog owner.
Now I feel like I'm allowed to go down there.
Uh, Garell was down there yesterday, take his kids down and FaceTime me.
He's like, I'm on the beach.
World's biggest playground.
It's just like, it's go do whatever.
A little cold today for a beach day though.
You know, it's all anything sticks out.
Well, I was just thinking more golf related of, I almost feel like if you're
gonna have the take that like pebbles overrated, which sometimes I do have that take, you should
have to stand like behind eight and look down nine and ten and you should have to stand there
and say it because when you do see it again in person, you know, it's two-dimensional on
television and when you see it in 3D, you see the elevation change, you see the waves, the colors,
the sounds, it's like, God, it's pretty freaking cool. Like it's just freaking.
It's really cool.
They're saying they're calling it the greatest meeting of land. It's so wimpy. I'm so cold.
You're always cold. No, I'm below like 60 degrees. No, just here. I mean that New York.
No in New York, I don't get that cold. It's like there's some like mental thing here.
Neil down my big toe.
I've never played poppy or never played Spanish Bay. Those are complete total blind spots for me. I know Spanish Bay is either getting redone or has been redone or haven't started yet. I don't know.
Sully hasn't played Spanish Bay because he doesn't like Seve.
Is Seve designing it? No, he's just spinning.
Seve. Is Seve designing it?
No, he's just spanning it.
That one got Cody pretty good.
Cody's egging TC on.
That's good stuff.
All right.
So we know, we know Neil's pick.
We know Neil's going with Jason Day.
Randy, I'm going to throw it to you.
I mean, the people are waiting with bated breath.
They're saying they got, they got the FanDuel app open.
They're saying, please big.
Who are your models spitting out?
Please.
Where are you going this week?
Who's going to win?
You know, I was, I was trying to synthesize all the Neil's.
I was trying to get the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, fan dual app open. They're saying, please big. Who are your models spitting out? Please. Where are you going this week? Who's going to win?
You know, I was,
I was trying to synthesize all of Neil's information to really come to a pick.
Um, I'm going to go, you know,
you guys know I love the home game models and you know, I'm back in on Colin.
I'm going, I'm going more a call with this week. Bye. Hi, baby. Yeah.
We're at the top of the market.
I'm going to give you a top three. Tommy's going to win.
We didn't play show. Tommy's going to win. Ludwig's going to come in second.
And Bo Hosler is going to come in third. Wow. The brother is going to be reaching across the mouth.
I like that. I only have one pick. I, the brothers could be reaching across the house. I like that.
I only have one pick.
I think Justin Thomas is gonna win this week.
What's the summing up for the people?
Just playing very legitimately good golf.
I think he can, you know,
it just seems like he's on the cusp of something really good
if not returning to some level of greatness.
But God, you guys are all kinda sniffing
around the big board a little bit.
I like the big board.
Can I have a little breaking news? PGA Tour, I guess, has announced
they will test players allowing players to use distance measuring devices during competition.
I don't know when or where.
Test.
Seeing that on social media. They're going to be doing some testing on that front.
Did you go? You got a winner play for us?
Is it lame if I say gaudy and just nothing can stop him or just simply too big to fail?
I mean, that's where my head goes. That's all I like. I really like JT. I really like Morikawa.
What can you say?
I mean, super bold. I'll go Scotty. I think Scotty. I think the best player in the world wins.
Who's your favorite player? All of them.
I like them all.
I like Will Zalatoros to come out and dig in.
And then guys breaking news across the wire, Tom McKibben has been announced to Legion 13.
I did not know that it had not been announced. I thought that was announced. I think that's going
to be like an official Callaway team. Gotcha. But yeah, I mean, what else? Thanks to the audience.
Thanks to everybody for tuning in. Thanks for sticking with us. Thanks for watching.
What do we got coming up tomorrow?
We got a different location tomorrow, which I think is-
Hopefully we got some people eating some afternoon soup.
I think gonna be kind of electric.
Kind of an electric location tomorrow.
We will be on from one to 4 p.m. Pacific time tomorrow.
So kind of right at the tail end of play.
We're gonna be kind of, I think we'll be kind of
a second screen experience tomorrow. Maybe throw the boys on an air pod while you're watching the golf. We're going to be kind of, I think we'll be kind of a second screen, second screen experience tomorrow. You know, maybe throw the boys on an
air pod while you're watching the golf. We'll be chopping it up. Uh, gonna have,
I think KVV is going to come by tomorrow. Got some more videos. I think we're
going to maybe go explore a little bit today, see what the boys can get into.
Get a bit of Jason. Yeah, maybe a little golf Jason. See what, see what the boys
can get into. TC might go explore the golf course solid gonna go get some news and
notes. I think we'll have another good show for everybody
tomorrow. Thank you to everybody for tuning in. Thank you to the
friends at AT&T. Connecting changes everything does you know
I don't need to tell you honestly, good job. DJ put a
guarantee on this show and I think you helped help him
deliver on that guarantee. Yeah, I think so. I think we rocked
them. Not a lot of guarantees in life anymore, including the rental car.
That's right.
At a MRI.
That's, that's exactly.
That's right.
That's exactly right.
So yeah, we've got another, another good one in on tap for tomorrow.
Big thanks to Matt McNeely, Gary Young, Steven Cox, Roger Steele, Max Grazerman,
everybody that rolled through the show.
That's a lot, a lot of fun.
And Mike. And I thank you to the Beluga for putting together the Beluga's big board. the where you're out on the big board, you just, you know, just kind of prove it to me. Or come up and punch, punch the czar in the face.
That's right.
Or no, come on and sit down. We'll talk about it.
You're willing to take me back.
How happy were you when the guy that ended up sitting down was in your top seat?
Yeah, I'm real happy.
I mean, Adam Hadwin was walking by.
Where was Hadwin on your big board?
He wasn't too high. Hey, Adam, how are you?
Well, the power rankings. See? He says my recent
form is not so much to go off of, but there's no offense there. You know, we just, it's
unbiased. I love it. Bulletin board stuff for you. Yeah. That's why it's safe to put the
Canadians at the bottom. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. See bulletin board stuff. They're
really, really nice about my recent form. The balloon is
helping. Exactly. All right. Well, thank you to everybody for
tuning in. Thanks for everyone who joined the show. Thanks to
Cody and Matt behind the scenes. Thanks to the whole team. Guys,
let's have another fun one tomorrow. We'll do it. Correct.
Cheers, guys. Thank you for tuning in.
