Be the right club today.
Better than most.
Better than most.
Better than most.
Expect anything different. Better than most.
Expect anything different. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the No Laying Up podcast.
My name is DJ joined by my friends and associates, the Strapped Boys, of course,
first from Brooklyn, New York, Neil Schuster.
Neil, how are you? Greetings, Mr.
Pi on Oscar Sunday.
I've got I've got the two movie, uh,
movie experts here doing a golf podcast. I'm honored.
Well, good to be with you. And of course, you know, you, you,
you alluded to him. That's of course going to be big Randy out in Denver.
Randall greetings. Hello. Yeah. Thank you. Uh, little, you know,
behind the show here for the listeners and viewers on YouTube,
Neil demanded he get top billing.
That was the whole thing this afternoon.
We were going back and forth.
He said, I'm not doing it, DJ, if you don't give me top billing.
He wanted points on the back end of this episode.
There's any syndication or anything?
He's got my name in the opening pre-roll, not just at the end.
OK, good to be with you guys.
We got a we got a fun agenda here tonight, just painstakingly and thoughtfully curated by our guy, Big Randy, who's going to take us in a couple of different directions. First winners around the world. Of course, on the PGA Tour, Joe Highsmith goes 64-64 on the weekend for his first PGA Tour win. On the Corn Fairy Tour,. Justin saw wins by five shots at the Jockey Club.
Dylan Naidoo wins in a playoff at his home South African open
over Lori Cantor on the LPGA Dame Lydia Co is your winner
in Singapore by four shots and Riley Smith wins on the Epson
Tour. The opening event down there in a playoff over Matilda Castron. I mentioned it guys, but Joe
Highsmith is your winner on the PGA Tour. We're going to get
to some more cognizant talk towards the middle of this
episode. But first, let's get into a little bit of what's in
the bag highlights for your cognizant champ, Joe Highsmith.
Last fall, Joe quickly made the move into the 2025 Pro V1
Golf Ball. Both new Pro V the 2025 Pro V1 golf ball.
Both new Pro V1 and Pro V1X featured new core technology
that delivers more spin with the irons and wedges.
And as a drawer of the golf ball, Joe found that that added spin
gave him more control with his irons, which I believe was on full display today.
At the top end of the bag, he's taken full advantage of the speed
and stability of the GT lineup, gaming a GT three eight degree
driver in a GT three 15 degree fairway wood.
He gained 2.9 strokes on the field off the tee this week,
which ranked 11th.
He also just actually putted the lights out.
I think we'll get there.
He then moves into any feet of putts made a T 200 utility and a full set of T 100 irons,
which were dialed in down the stretch on the bear trap.
He's played for SM 10 wedges, 46, 50 and 54 in the F grind and then a 58 T grind.
Neil, just like you, my man.
I know you love hearing that on the greens.
It is a Newport style double Oh nine M putter, which is new.
This is actually just his third start with the
new model. Seemed like that worked pretty well. He took a
trip to the Scotty Cameron putter studio. Actually, the
week of the farmers seems to have paid off. He ranked seventh
in strokes, gained putting this week, almost a career day on
the greens on Saturday, I believe. Anyways, all of this
is to say go get fit. There's probably something you didn't know about what's in the
Titleist lineup, and don't try to figure it out on your own.
You know, lean on the professionals and go start that journey
over at Titleist.com to find a fitting near you.
Rainey, I'm going to throw it to you first.
You know, it's March.
We've got a busy week on the golf course, busy week off the
golf course.
As I mentioned, we're going to get to some cognizant stuff a little later on, but you know, we kind of. We've got a busy week on the golf course, busy week off the golf course. As I mentioned, we're gonna get to some cognizant stuff
a little later on, but you know, we kind of said,
big guy, why don't you take the ball
and run with this episode?
You take us wherever you want to go.
And you put together a couple of fun opening blocks here.
Yeah, thank you.
You know, I was posting up, calling for the ball.
Had a mouse in the house down here in the paint.
The two things, well, one, right off the bat,
the listener line is live.
We will get there, folks.
We got some voicemails.
That's gonna be part of this opening block.
But the first part of this opening block,
I wanna take you back to our offsite in Pebble Beach,
and Neil puts together a great offsite agenda.
And one of those is- No, you do, you do.
And one of the things he asked us was,
what are some professional goals this year?
And one of mine was quite honestly,
I want to reconnect with the professional game of golf
as a viewer and specifically on the men's side. I feel like
I've drifted the last couple of years. I've, you know, for a variety of what could have caused that
which has been, I'm told the game's never been in a better spot. Yeah. Yeah. Which, which is a lot
of reasons chronicled on this here podcast, but my goal was, Hey, listen, I know there
have to be things that, and my wording here thrill and delight me about professional golf
in that order in either order.
And as if all they have to thrill and delight you.
I think that's the bar.
They have to thrill and delight.
Okay.
See, I took it as thrill or, you know, it's an and or, but you're right're right. It's real and delight now, cause they're not that they're not technically synonyms,
you know, something can throw you, but not the light you.
That's true. That's okay. Well, you've given me something to think about.
I think we're going to work it out live. I think. Yeah.
This brandy literally said this in a, a, a offsite opening meeting is like,
I'm looking for things that thrill and delight me.
I was like, wow.
And I think I started laughing.
I was like, that's, I loved it.
I loved it.
I think we referenced it for the rest of the week.
Yeah.
So what I was thinking, you know, no offense to the cognizant,
you know, we certainly could start with some pro golf,
but I didn't want to do that.
I wanted to start today.
I have three things. I challenged you guys to bring three things about pro golf that thrill,
I guess, and or delight you now. I'm not going to hold you to both of those.
And that was the impetus. So I'm happy. I feel like, should we go around one at a time sharing?
How would you guys like to do this? You tell me. Well, can I, can I give you a little teaser? And I don't want this to count as one
of my three because I, but I got to call it out. 231 feet of putts, Randy, it's truly thrills and
delights me every time the broadcast brings up feet of putts. That's how many feet of putts,
Joe Highsmith made this week. And I just, I chuckle every time they bring it up. It delights me. I don't
know if it thrills me though, you know, because it's a very stupid stat. But I then I kind
of got into the weeds. Like,
it's stupid. But then you're like, wait a second, maybe it's not.
What is the tour average for feet of putts made? It's usually around this number every year.
Per round?
Per round.
Average per round.
Feet of putts made.
God, I truly don't even know how to guess.
I would honestly guess like 79 feet a hole.
Yeah, that's pretty close to 72 10 inches in 2024.
And the preeminent expert rate people thought that was a bit
but there he goes just absolutely nailing it in this
year. Year to date. It's 72 feet eight inches. Who led the tour
last year and feed average feed of putts made per round. It's a
great list up in the top five. Is it Denny?
Because I know he's a great putter, but I don't know how much that... Okay. I don't know how much
that translates. It was Max Grazerman. Oh, sure. I might've gotten... I was going to say Xander,
but I think I might've gotten to Grazerman on my short... Top five in 2024 was Grazerman at 85 feet, six inches. Then you had Pavan at 83, 10, Justin Lauer at 83, one,
Zach Johnson, 81, four, and Wyndham Clark in fifth at 81, three.
And I just want to just humor me for a second.
Who's leading the tour year to date?
This is before today.
This probably doesn't count today.
This is, no, no, this is through the car. It is. Okay. Yeah. Uh, gosh.
I have no idea. Uh, Ben Griffin.
No, Ryan Gerard, 89.
And then we got Brian Campbell at 89, six Ben Coles at 89, five
Brandt Snedeker at 88, four.
Now listen, these total rounds, 17, 12, 14, 15,
Isaiah Salinda, 87, seven.
Sure.
So I don't know.
It's just such a dumb step, but then it made me like go
just research something.
I don't know.
I feel like I gained a little bit of useless knowledge.
And I think of you every time they mention it, Randy.
Well, it's also one of those.
It's one of those perverse stat, like all of these stats, like everything in golf, I feel like almost has a counterweight to it, right?
Where it's like you can, you can hold up something as a good stat and then immediately on the counterweight is like, well, that just means they don't hit it close enough to the hole.
That means they have more attempts for that.
That means they have more attempts to make longer putts and that skews the data.
You're like, all right, maybe, maybe no stat means anything then I guess.
Uh, that's, that's good stuff.
Randy, you want to, you want to go next?
Yeah, I'm going to come out.
It's going to sound like I'm a hater, but I promise you, I, I'm going to lump
these two things together.
I promise you they both thrill and delight me one Tommy Fleetwood has not
won a PGA Tour Tournament.
Oh, you're going lifetime.
Just generally.
It just is one of my favorite things
about pro golf right now,
is Tommy Fleetwood has not won a PGA Tournament.
Tron picks him like six times a year to win.
It's the best.
I love it.
Six, like 16.
And then I'm gonna combine that with Rory not winning a major in a decade. I love it. Six, like 16. And then I'm gonna combine that with Rory
not winning a major in a decade.
I love it.
I love it.
It gives me something to care about
every major championship.
You gotta have-
Care about so you're rooting against him
to continue the surprise and delight?
I am.
I am.
Yeah, I am. I'm sorry. I'm a hater. Don't apologize to me. I think it's awesome. It's fantastic.
I love it. I'm going to go, this is very recency bias here, but I'm going to go with one from
today. Jake Knapp have been thinking about Jake Knapp since he won last year in little
fits and starts, but don't, admittedly don't watch him play a lot of golf, right? And some of that's
just he's not on a ton of leaderboards late on Sundays, but
he's kind of been on my list of people to like, I really need
to drill in and watch him play. Obviously shoots 59 this week
and is kind of in the final group on Sunday, but I'm just
going to throw those little bullet, like low bullet tee
shots that he was hitting today are truly like that's a shot
I thought was extinct.
That's the shot that when you could hit it as a kid, you're
like, I'm the best golfer on the planet.
And he was hitting them a lot out there today.
And I'm just like, man, that's a shot you don't see anymore.
And it's just that was a thrilled and delight to me.
That was the one that was both. I don't know that my other
ones are both, but that one thrilled and delighted me,
particularly the shot he hit on number nine today. I don't
know if you guys saw that looked like a three wood. Yes.
177 mile an hour ball speed at apexed at 25 feet off the
ground. Granted, it barely cleared the water. It left him
like he just a horrible spot left.
But again, I was like, man, that's relatable stuff right there.
You pull off the trajectory you're looking, but you're pretty much dead.
And then he hit a great recovery shot.
It was just all like it all kind of built together into like, oh, man, what a thrill
to watch that.
So that was my first one.
Was nine the same hole where then he had to hit that big high cut?
Exactly. Seven iron. That was a sick shot. Awesome.
Yeah, that delighted me.
Well, I don't know if it rose to thrilling.
The tee shot thrilled me was just a true like I almost gasped.
I was like, and then, you know, and then you hear him on the broadcast here.
I think it was Bones like, oh, my this needs to get up.
This is not even clear the water. I I think it was bones like, Oh my, this needs to get up. This is
not even clear the water. I mean, it was just it was amazing.
25 feet in the air. It's just it's so I was looking at his,
you know, his like radar chart on on shotlink. And it was the
day before I think he hit a driver that was like 195 miles
an hour, the apex like 130 feet in the air or something. And
it's just it's great. Get a guy that can do both, you know?
Well, he's, he's now that I'm, I've been stacking the way he generates power.
I'm just like, God, like he is such a six wing. He's fun. He is very fun to watch hit the golf ball.
Randy, we watched him for a little while on the, on the pebble on the driving range. And it's just
like, man, it looks like he's swinging so easy. It's fun uh, seems like, you know, 59 or not.
It's just like, he, he has some, some juice to him, I think.
So I hope he stays in the mix, uh, moving forward.
Agree.
You guys want to snake it or you want to go back to the baby.
I know I'm always snaking with you guys.
All right. This is a, this is a good one.
I don't, I don't, you know, Sally, uh,
is taking the weekend off here, hanging with some family.
He's got in town, but I put this one on the list.
I'm not going to go back to the, to the, to the, to the, to the, to the, to the a good one. I don't you know, Solly is taking the weekend off here,
hanging with some family he's got in town.
But I put this one on my list in honor of him.
And it's the data golf points list.
And I don't know if you guys are familiar with data golf points.
I'm sure you guys are obviously very familiar with the website.
But fairly recently, they've launched this points list where they've kind of drilled it down. They've taken all this, you know,
everything on their websites basically fueled by
adjusted strokes gains and that's on the round by round basis and that, you know, kind of fuels their whole model.
This one they skewed a little more towards wins and top fives and the best way I know is not an apples to apples comparison,
so don't come at me about this, but it's basically their version of like a career war list.
If you're if you're a baseball fan and it's just the whole point is to kind of stack up
eras against each other, you know, because all these guys are playing in such different
time periods where, you know, sometimes the PGA Tour season has 49 events and sometimes
guys are playing 12 events and some guys are only playing the majors.
And so it's their attempt to kind of take everything since like 1983 essentially,
and just compare guys from era to era and season to season. And so not only is that very helpful to
look at, you know, Scottie season last year and how that basically ranks behind nothing other than,
you know, four or five Tiger years, but also just looking
at it from a career standpoint, they have the top 250 players, like the guys who have
accumulated the most data golf points in over the course of their careers.
And it's just, it's, it thrills, it delights me to like scroll down that website and a
few notables of, of all the players who have played since 1983.
Justin Rose is number 11 on that list.
One spot ahead of Dustin Johnson.
And I think that's just a, you know, on first place, I'm like, man, that's kind of, that seems outrageous.
But then you start thinking about longevity and you start thinking about consistency and you're like, Oh yeah, okay, man, I can see it. And to your point, Randy, Tony Finau,
Tommy Flew was not even, not even in the top hundred. Like it's just out of here. It's,
it's just delightful. They're, they're basically in the swimming in the same pond as Dr. Gil
Morgan. And I'm like, I'm like, that's, that's it, man. That's what my eyes have been seeing. And I just, I needed like a metric to kind of,
you know, spell it out.
And it's also, it's fun to see guys like,
you know, right now it's so very obvious
that Scottie is the best player in the world.
But seeing, you know, I think of those 250 players,
Rory is number four, Scottie is number 52. just to spell out like how much longer Rory's been doing
it than Scotty, you know, Scotty's put up like,
I think it's two of the top 10 or 15 seasons in the history of this stat,
but also like he's going to have to keep doing it for another decade to,
to sniff Rory. And it just, it just is a really fun deep dive.
I used to just dick around with golf stats like this all the time
and think about golf in this way, and it's kind of gone away for
me in a big way. And stats like this, just I don't know. Maybe
it's the historical nature of it, or maybe it's the comparisons,
or maybe it's kind of making it feel a little more like baseball
or something. But I find myself kind
of getting lost in that and just seeing like, Oh, Sam Burns kind of accomplished about the
same as Frank Licklider the second, like that's, let me sit with that for a minute. That's,
that's pretty interesting. You know, Colin Morikawa, even with Tim Heron right now, like,
huh, if it's stopped right now, if it stopped right now, they're putting them even with
Tim Heron, like that's, that's interesting, man. Let me think about that. It's, it's great. It's great. And we're fishing in the same waters.
I'm going to get to my second point, but a couple of things, because I've just pulled this up one
that, that thrill and delight me in this moment, DJ, my guy, Mickelson is ranked second, uh,
comfortably ahead of Ernie L's. I remember one of Andy Johnson's worst takes of all time is trying to tell me Ernie Els is better than Phil Mickelson.
So, no.
The numbers are in.
Yeah. And fourth on the list, Rory McIlroy has the same amount of starts as Tiger Woods, who's of course first. The difference in their point is like a thousand, which would rank like what sixth on the, like the golf
between tiger and Rory would be the six best player ever.
Or the six best player since 1983.
Rory plus the six best player ever.
Greg Parman.
I'll give you the top 10 real quick for those that are not glancing at the list. Number 10, Fred couples. Number nine, Sergio Garcia, number eight, Greg Norman,
seven Davis love the third. I think just kind of criminally slept on six.
Jim Furek, five Ernie L's for Rory McElroy, three VJ sing to Phil Mickelson,
one Tiger wood.
So we shout out our friends at data golf a lot.
And that is, that is for good reasons because it's
the easiest site in golf to just absolutely get lost in.
It's the best.
So I'm going to play it straight and the cognizant has led me to this take a little bit.
I've been searching for a favorite golfer for a while.
I've been a free agent for several years. Really since the 2021 PGA
championship.
Since he got blocked by Phil, I would say.
Yeah, I've been on the market. Dude, I'm in on Spieth. I want
to just invest in Jordan Spieth. All right, he finished
tied for ninth this week. I'm not sure if we're going to talk
much about him when we get to the cognizant proper, but I just love a guy that you never
quite know what he's going to do. He could shoot 78. He could shoot 65. You know, obviously he's
coming back from injury. I just want to invest in Jordan Spieth. I don't know where it's going.
I'm boarding the train and I'm not sure the destination, but I'm excited to
get on board.
Randy, I think you should take an activist position. I should,
I think you should declare it to his team and you know, kind of
like an Elliott management situation, like, Hey guys, like
I'm looking for a board seat here. You know, I can fly out
to Dallas. I have some ideas, but we're going to have to
change the capital structure a little bit.
You know, I think you can help. I think you could get involved and you know what? They'll probably try to stonewall you and then you can just take it,
take it to the public. Maybe I legitimately almost told him this when we
saw him in pebble. I almost just told like Jordan, you're like my guy right now.
You're my favorite player. I did not tell him that you didn't want to put too
much pressure on him or no. He's just coming back.
You guys can have a little savvy be at 10 AM, you know, in the off season.
Come on. He's like, I'm going to be like, You didn't want to put too much pressure on him. No, he's just coming back.
Maybe you guys can have a little Savvy B at 10 AM in the off season.
Come on.
He's my guy.
I'm in on Jordan.
So that was my second one.
I mean, God, I said the same thing to you after we filmed that little video with him.
I was like, God, I haven't seen, he's the best, man.
He's just like, he's magnetic.
It's true.
But Randy, that's fantastic to hear. Happy to hear you're jacked up about
something. You know what, Neil, before we get to your next one, uh,
just on the speed notes, we've had a little pop in the bat, uh,
was watching a little bit of his golf, getting the driver out there.
Another guy that's getting the driver out there is Neil. Uh,
thanks to our friends at the stack. Neil, that's right. We do it.
The stack just finished my fourth session, uh PM today. Dej, my, my grid score is 99. You know, we're hitting our workouts on time.
God, I gotta see if it's cold. It got cold again. It's like in the twenties.
So James were kind of flat over session three.
I had a big bump in session three, but the momentum's real.
I feel like I'm looking forward to session five on Wednesday coming out of
phase one. You know, it's like the,
the habits starting to
pick up a little bit. And it's like the 15 to 20 minute warmup has just been super valuable
for me. And then it's 10, 15 minutes of like, really focused, like, you know, swinging the
club as hard as you can. And once you get the hang of it, it's kind of become, I don't want
to say meditative, that would be a stretch, but it's like a, it's not a hard workout. And it's fun to see the results
start to come in and start to feel like you start to experiment a little bit, like using your left
leg, pushing off the, you know, using the big ball, pushing off the earth. And then I've started
to mix in some mobility and like power stuff after I do the stack workout. So like the stuff I got at TPI, which is all very like,
the mobility stuff is so, I don't know how to, what's the right word for it? Like
annoying or just to take, you know, like when you're doing like little, like tedious, yeah,
clamp, like your clam openings with your hip and like, it's like, but after it's a little
easier to tag onto something like this. So anyway, you know, I was kind of not holding out, but it's a little easier to tag onto something like this. So anyway, uh, you know, I was kind of not holding out,
but it's something for someone that's living in a city.
It's actually been awesome. It's getting me really excited to play golf. Uh,
the stack system.com forward slash NLU. You can learn more, uh,
use code, no laying up all caps with any purchase for 10% off.
That's the stack system.com slash NLU.
You know what I'm gonna get down with this week
is they also just launched a new wedge program on there.
Just got a little hitting mat for my garage, a little net.
I feel like I can get the launch monitor out
and just work on some stack wedges.
That's exactly what I need.
So I'm pumped to check that out this week too.
Go ahead, second.
All right, I got it.
I think it crills and delights you in program. Yeah, a couple of directions I can go, but I gotta go with one that out this week too. Go ahead. Second. All right. I got it.
Delights you in pro. Yeah. A couple of directions I can go, but I got to go with one. That's a bit of a, I'm a weirdo and,
and it's solid. He's not here so I can,
I can bring this up and he won't roll his eyes,
but I truly get thrilled and delighted tracking random sponsorships
of random players. I really do. It's like, it's like a joy.
It's something I look for.
Maybe it's my mind's rewired from
doing the business stuff for our business and how some of our partnerships come about.
And it's just like, you know, Justin Thomas has a frozen food delivery company on his
left chest. Like, how does that happen?
What are the best players in the world?
Right. And it's like, well, the guy went to that CEO went to Alabama. you know, you explained it to me, asked him, I straight up asked him in Hawaii,
a couple of, I was like, why are you wrapped by a frozen food company lineage? What is,
what are you doing? You know, and he's like, oh yeah, that's a good question.
So a couple, just, just today, a couple, um, and then, so I started to think, I see these sponsors,
I'm like, how does that first, you're like, what is that? And then how does that come about? So,
you know, it works for an idiot or a weirdo like me, but Michael Kim,
binary defense across his hat.
It's kind of a mismatch there, like, you know, like hardcore cyber security
threat management, getting into the threat management early in the active
life, uh, life cycle, as their website says, I'm just thinking like Michael
Kim, active on on X maybe. And then I looked up the CEO very active on on the X platform.
Maybe they had a little DM exchange, maybe they met online. And that's how that deal came about.
You know, so it's like, I feel like Frank from old school, when he's talking about the waitress
and like, what kind of panties she has, you know, it's like, I don't know, maybe there's something like something crazy. Like I don't even know
about. I don't even know about these exactly. Like, I don't know what maybe they're doing
some some stuff on signal because it's cybersecurity. Maybe Michael Kim's doing he's got burners.
Who knows? Right. And then another one that is interesting is Ricky dusting Grant Thornton
for just a straight up like the biggest competitor. EY just jump ship. I mean, he was in every grand Thornton commercial. So it's like stuff like that. I just think about it. Like, man, is that, is that his team working hard and just,
you know, so I don't know that stuff.
You could probably connect dots with,
with the grand Thornton stuff and the PGA tour and all of their like player
sponsorship team that they have funneling money. It's, there's only,
I think about while I'm watching golf, while it's playing through, I'm like,
I buy a lot of golf.
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,'s there's only, this is stuff I think about while I'm watching golf, while it's playing through,
I'm like binary defense and Michael Kim. I just don't,
I don't see how that one's, huh? That's, that's interesting. Let me,
let me think on that. So that, but it, it kind of,
it kind of delights me to think about mega corp.
And then all of a sudden you start shouting out mega corp.
They send me a fricking care package. They sent me like mythology kit and like a bunch of cooties.
I still got a waterproof speaker from mega corp. Still don't know what they do.
Trucking logistics. How about that? All right. Snake it back, Neil. What's your, what's all right.
I, this one is, is, uh, I just want to give a shout out to something that truly surprises
and delights me is, uh, or thrills and delights.
Sorry, Randy, but I keep using surprise thrills and delights, random oil spills.
Okay.
When you're not like a spontaneous oil spill.
So I flip on the cognizant classic on Saturday afternoon.
I'm on dad duty.
I'm watching Mr. Small crawl all over the place.
We've child proofed the apartment. I got them fenced into the main area. Great. So I'm not
paying that much attention, but I happened to look up and Taylor Montgomery is in the lead.
He's deep in the lab on 15T with his caddy. They're flummoxed by the wind. He pulls a club,
not comfortable, goes back for another club, sets up and D
jumps. So I know you got a lot of stock in Montgomery enterprises. It's okay. It's pretty
much zeroed out. It's, it's a penny stock.
And he hits this just fat chunk, the worst shot I've seen in 2025 truly, and no offense
to him. I mean, just really bad swing. He comes up about like 10 yards short skips.
It was so low. It skips on the water in front of the, you know, 15 green
front of the rock wall. And then Zach Johnson, now you have my
attention, like, Oh, god, that was awful. You kind of invest
in that like 20 seconds of like, it's kind of like, get the ball
dude, you know, oh, shit, that was terrible. Then Zach Johnson
hits a total block party, he puts it in the water, bad juju
in the group. So that it's a yellow hazard, but yellow penalty area love yellow. Right. So they draw 99 yards.
We'll fill it up again, boys. And homie just chunks. Another one. He hits, he hits that
little sliver of grass between the yellow hazard line and the rocks. It kicked straight
up and it lands in between the rocks, but he doesn't know that. So he walks up, can't, oh, shit, I can't hit it. So he has to go back.
He hits another one. It's like 25 feet, two putts for a seven quad. He was in the lead, makes a quad.
So I don't want to pick on Tyler Montgomery. That sucks. He birdies 16, then birdies 18,
still shoots 68. And then he had a tough day today. But just this, the spontaneity when you when you
happen to come across an oil spill live on coverage, because
most of coverage is a highlight reel. It's just, hey, the moment
ago, this guy sunk a 15 footer when you just happen to line up
with like, Oh, shit, something's actually happening, they stay
with it. It's the best in that I want more of that. And it's hard for the broadcast. Like, you know, you can it, it's the best. And that, like, I want more of that.
And it's hard for the broadcast.
Like, you know, you can't, most of the oil spills
are gonna happen early in the day with people
that have nothing to do with the like events.
So you'll see them on online and kind of highlights of them
are like a shot, you know, shot link.
But when you see it live, it was like,
oh, this is like the best.
I love, you're just like locked in on it.
It was great.
That's so, so specific and so well said that I could not agree more. Yeah.
Cosine like, amen. It's relatable too. Nothing better than compounding errors.
I made a nine and some video we did back in October. It's like, yeah, man, like these guys
do it too. It's, you know, I'm not, I truly not trying to pick on Taylor Montgomery. It's just
like, Oh hell yeah, brother. Let's strap in like, and you know, I bring up, I'm watching the kid, you know, kids like crawled off. He's
like, got his hands in the dog bowl. Like, Oh shit, hold on. Pete. Like, I'm like, no, he's,
it's an oil spill. Hold on. I'm trying to think of just like some of the hall of fame,
you know, out of nowhere. I mean, Kevin, the 16 that he made, that's, that's probably as good as it gets.
Uh, yeah.
Like non-major championship division, right?
Yeah.
I mean, or I remember watching live when, uh, when Zach Johnson accidentally
hit it on 13 G like, yeah, like I was like, whoa, whoa.
Well, you're right because you could just get so catatonic.
Yeah. You know, you, you, your bones just kind of liquefy as you're watching. If you could just get so catatonic. Yeah.
You know, your bones just kind of liquefy as you're watching.
If you're watching golf too long, right?
You just kind of turn into like a big puddle.
And you're just not paying attention.
And you just need something to like wake you back up and snap you.
Well, that right when he made the swing, the first swing was like,
there's no way that gets there.
Like, that's awful.
Oh, that's great. All right. Let's keep it moving. Big. What do you got? Well, I feel like
we should shut down the segment after that one. Mine's not going to live up to it, but you guys
are a little fishing in my pond. You know what I took today? I took my first great golf nap of the
year. Let's go. It was to your point, Deidre, sometimes you just kind of get catatonic and your body liquefies.
And I was in the best, most relaxed, like just nap on my couch. The weather was pretty
nice outside. We had the windows open a little cross breeze. Oh my God.
Hey, listen, I'm working. Okay. I'm gonna watch this. I mean, I got to, you know, I mean, it's like the end of golf channel coverage
into the beginning of network coverage. Like, oh my God,
there's not a better, you know, you half hour, 45, pick this up
on 1213. You know, maybe you wake up and rewind it. Someone
named Joe Highsmith is witted by three. How did that happen?
What happened? Is Nap still playing? What happened to him?
Yeah, that's, I mean, that's undefeated big. I'll round us out. Very simple one here. I
kind of thought this might be where you were going, Randall, but Spieth is, it makes a
lot more sense. I'll just shout out Daniel Berger being relatively back. He is a dude
that is, I don't even know if he's a killer
necessarily. He just has dog in him and he plays kind of a
different style of golf as the other big stars. He is much more
about accuracy than he is bombing it. It's got kind of a
fucked up swing that I just love. I just love watching him
get the golf ball in the hole, man. Did you guys see his
opening hole this week or see any of the highlights from it?
So he started at number 10 first thing, Thursday morning, uh,
pushes it a little, right.
Get stuck in a Palm tree.
First, first swing of the, of the tournament, right.
That happened to me at Jack's beach and a Florida state golf event.
I bet the next thing did not happen to you, which is that he re teed.
It's par five, number 10 re tease hits the fairway hits a second shot over the I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, that's awesome. And it goes on that nice week. Not scared. He has like dog, but I just, he just strikes me as someone who's not scared.
You know, and I feel that way about Russell Henley too. Like wait, he's,
you know, kind of got a fucked up swing too.
And he's just not scared to like let it go. And I appreciate that.
I think that's exactly right. So big, I love this.
I think this is a recurring segment.
It made me watch golf completely differently this week and just look for, look for those things, you know, look for a recurring segment. Maybe watch golf completely differently this week and just look for those things.
Look for a little optimism.
Last one, just a little dessert for you.
I was thrilled and delighted to hear him calling it
the Palm Beaches, being inclusive of all the beaches.
Not just Palm Beach anymore, it's the beaches.
More Palm Beach is shit.
Palm Beach gardens, just all of them.
We just wanna welcome all of the beaches.
We wanna be cognizant of all of the beaches. Exactly. Well, Big, you mentioned this
upfront, but the listener line is live. We've, uh, we've had a listener line on the trap draw
for quite a while. And it's, it's, you want to talk about things that thrill and delight me is
some of the trap draw voicemails that we get. So we decided to open it up this week to some people for the NLU podcast.
Phone number is 1-833-330-8725. You're going to hit a menu, press 1 for the NLU mailbox,
press 2 for the Trap Draw. So here's a smattering of voicemails we got this week. DJ's team Rose bit? A bit? Or does he actually support team Rose? And if it could be expanded
on and discussed among the three of you. I feel like, yeah, he's maybe a little bit of a
performative bony, but you know, his resume is pretty sterling. And I actually think the guy
is probably pretty class overall. Anyway, I think I'd love to throw that in the mixer of you three
and hear what comes out of it no matter what. Crack off.
All right, Kevin, thank you for the call.
Crack on to you, Kevin.
Crack on to you as well.
This is a tough one, man, if I'm being honest.
Just to kind of suspend the bit for a second,
say the quiet part out loud.
Well, is it a bit?
That's the question.
Well, that's kind of the whole thing.
It's like it started as a bit, right?
And it was just, what it really started from
was when he kept posting about team Rose on like, uh, on social and Instagram, he's posted these workout
videos. It's just like, Oh man, I can't, can't wait to see all of team Rose out at Doral this weekend.
I'm like, and so my point was like, dude, I don't think there is a team Rose. Like I know
you're kind of looking at this, like it just, he's treating it like it's Arnie's army or something. And I'm like, man,
I just, there is no team Rose. This is not the emperor has no clothes here,
man. I'm sorry. And so then I swung back in,
I started doing a whole thing about like the, well, yeah,
I'm one of the mods on the team Rose message board.
The boards are going nuts and all this stuff. Yeah. And so it got really fun.
And then the more his career has gone on, the more I've been like, ah, I don't know. I kind of, I kind of am in on
this guy now. Like I kind of do, I kind of do like him, you know? I think he is a complete
cheese ball. He makes me laugh every time he does the big fist bumps or like the swinging
the hips around when he lifts one in.
And I still think that he's probably an asshole to waiters.
Yes. Oh, people, sure.
Children on flights and and you know, all of that.
But I'm with you, dude.
It's like, oh, it's this happens more to TC
than it does with with any of us.
But like the take will boomerang.
Yeah. Like I feel like growing up, he hated Sergio, hated Sergio.
And then all of a sudden he and Randy like, oh, we've been on Sergio for every master's,
like filing our taxes. I'm like, wait a second. Like, are you this, you're my older brother.
You've hated this guy forever. And then, you know, now, now we hate Sergio again. So it's like,
it's kind of same idea here. It kind of goes in waves a little bit.
You know what, to your point on like really having to look hard for things that thrill
and delight you in pro golf, I almost wonder if there's so few that you just really chew
on them for so much longer.
You know, where it's like, I think about this, like listen to the ball knowers podcast, you
know, on the, on the trap draw.
It's like, yeah, next season, man, like you guys are going to have a whole, the writers
are going to get it.
You guys are going to have a whole new list of characters, new list of story lines.
Like you guys are just, you're just going to keep moving on.
Golf, it's like, yeah, we've only got like six things to talk you guys are just, you're just going to keep moving on golf. It's like, yeah,
we've only got like six things to talk about, you know, we're just going to,
and so you just kind of keep chewing on them and keep chewing on them. And,
you know, more often than not, they come back around like this.
So it's a good question and a complicated answer.
Let me ask you this though, Dej,
when do you think that the bit became real?
Like was it when he won pebble a few years ago, or was it the rider cup? Like when we like the rider cup, all right, two sides of my brain are just on fire. I'm like, that's the lane. Like on one hand, if somebody told me that he did that, I'd be like,
that's the cheesiest fucking thing I've ever seen.
And then I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, all right, two sides of my brain are just on fire. I'm like, that's the lane.
Like on one hand, if somebody told me that he did that, I'd be like,
that's the cheesiest fucking thing I've ever seen standing there in Rome,
watching it. I'm like, I have more goosebumps than I've ever.
Like that's the coolest thing anybody's ever done in a team event.
And so now I'm just like, yeah, I'm trying to, you know,
reconcile those two sides of my brain.
And it's just, it's, it just, it's pretty thrilling, honestly.
Honestly, I've always felt like Monty was Cornwallis from The Patriot and Justin Rose is the guy,
kill me before the walls, over will you? You know, just like, just swarmy, like, but talent,
but nice with the sword, you know, like, oh God, get a mel. Like, it's God. Yeah. I think that's the
exact, that was the exact moment though.
All right, let's, let's move on.
I'd voicemail number two.
What's up boys.
It's squeezer hot cuts coming at you live from Orlando, Florida.
Lost my voice tonight screaming at the Orlando magic losing by 42 Cleveland Cavaliers.
Listen, I know Orlando sucks.
I just really want to know why you guys hate on Orlando so bad.
Can you elaborate on this, boys?
I got a squeezer.
I love this.
Squeezeer gets me every time.
Sorry. I love that he goes, I know Orlando sucks.
But why? Why do you?
I know it's ugly.
Why do you think it sucks?, why do you think it's like, why don't you guys start here?
Cause I lived in Orlando.
Married there at the top of the water slide. There it is. Cash or bingo tickets on that one.
I knew that was going to be an early one. That's an all time, all time, Randy bit. I don't remember
where that's that started when I think we were in the tour truck. You were in the tour truck with,
Orlando borders, Helen traffic. And I think that's like for anyone who has not spent a lot of time with us in person.
I think just that we spend so much time in person.
I think the way to just pass the time is truly just, I mean, I don't think I thought about
it until you just said it like point blank, Neil.
Like, yeah, these guys just they just lie about stuff all the time.
I'm like, well, no, it's like a joke.
Like, you're like a joke. Like, you know, we're like, no, no.
A Swedish cab driver, a pedophile nasty Neil on Torasaw.
You know, nasty like your dirtbag, Randy.
Neal's like, yeah, no, these guys just make up lies all the time.
I'm like, I can't be around kids.
I guess it is. And cab driver bought a climate speaker.
I guess it really are.
Thanks. That's the best example of a low stakes.
And so anyways, we're driving through Orlando.
We go by scummy. What was it?
It wasn't the Holy Land experience, but it was one of the like water parks
you can see you see from I for and Randy.
I'm just like not really paying attention, kind of sitting in like the back seat.
Randy tells Kevin like, oh, yeah, DJ used to live in Orlando.
Like him and his wife got married at that water park over there.
Like they said their vows and then they just both just barreled down to barrel down the slide.
He's like, oh, that's cool. And I'm like, no, hold on.
Wait, that's not true at all. What are you talking about?
Anyways, you got I lived in Orlando for a couple of years.
I'll bring home the positive side of Orlando, but you guys can can shard on it if you want. I, here's the truth.
I honestly don't know like anything about Orlando.
I've had wonderful experience in Winter Park
and like that's the only part of Orlando
I feel like I've ever been to,
except for that one day out at Bay Hill in the tour truck.
I just know driving by it, it seems soulless.
The traffic always sucks.
Like the airport's not good.
You get told like every two miles, the airport is awful, you know, and just like the Disney
world experience, you know, it's just like a lot of anything that's inland and that humid and that
hot for that long. It's just like, yeah, you don't get the sea breeze. I know maybe it's biased from
living in, you know, by the beach. It's just like, yeah, the beach is just better. You know? So it's just not a lot of
alligators feel like you can get your leg bit off or your dog's going to get
eaten. You know, like not all of us are as brave as Billy Horschel. Like,
so yeah, it's just not, not every down again,
not at the top of my list of places. I want to spend a ton of time.
I would say it has kind of some case or off brand LA to it.
It's spread out. It's superficial.
It's very transient.
It's very plastic.
There's just tourists everywhere.
Nobody's from there.
But then if you do spend some time, I live there for about two years.
If you do spend some time, you live there for about two years. If you do spend some
time, like you find pockets that are really, really great. Winter Park is the probably the
most obvious one, but there's parts of downtown that are really cool. There's parts of university
or college park that are really cool. There's, if you can find your people and you can find like a
cool neighborhood, there's, there is good food. There is cool bars. There is like local kind of flavor to it like there is any other city.
It has a lot of the downsides of places like LA traffic and expense and superficiality.
I would say LA's highs are a little higher than Orlando's.
So I always enjoy going back to Orlando.
I do have fond memories of being there. Me and Sean Martin used to go to Fiddler's Green
every week for, I don't even, I mean, that entire two years plus an internship. I've
been there 65, 70 times probably, and it's just great memories. But a lot of sitting I'm calling from Columbus, Georgia. And my question is, who is the greatest short-term
driver in the world?
And I'm going to have to look up Mr.
Squeezer, because I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him.
I'm going to have to look up him. I'm going to have to look up him. I'm going to have to look up him. I'm going to have to look up him. I'm going to love that. All right. Next. My name is Levi still. I'm calling from Columbus, Georgia.
And my question is, who is the greatest short game player
to ever play the game?
Who goes flag on him?
Who goes flag on him?
Phil.
Phil's the best in my book.
It's hard to go with.
So I think it's like you throw Phil out there with the wedge,
but I just have so many memories of him just missing three and a half foot putts.
Will he gang?
Yeah, will he get short putts?
Sure.
That's where I'm like, well, it's like probably Tiger, right?
But I know that's not the most exciting answer.
I feel like this one is this one really lays bare how hard it is for me to compare eras in sports,
you know, where it's like, man, on one hand, I want to be
like, oh, it's Trevino. But I'm like, I'm talking to my ass. I don't know. It's really hard to
do the research on some of the older players. And then I'm like, well, in my lifetime,
it's Tiger. But that's not a very interesting answer. So the guy that over the last couple
years that blows me away is Scotty, which again is not mind blowing. But he's the guy that over the last couple of years is like that blows me away is Scotty, which again is not not mind blowing.
But he's the guy that just seems like he chips in more than anybody.
He seems like he doesn't hit it in that bad of spots, but when he does, he always gets out.
And so I don't know.
I think I found like young Spieth.
Yeah.
Maybe maybe this is just eye test for me, but it was always like, he was putting himself in these awful spots and then just the combo of like the
chip and the putt. It's like, good God, man. That guy gets out of everything.
Like what is Dini?
If anybody has any ideas for how to compare errors, how to,
how to do your homework on some of this stuff, you know, it's, it's hard,
because all you have is these kind of like old game stories to go off like, Oh,
he shipped the lights out.
Like, well, what the fuck does that mean? You know, it's hard.
Well, I was going to say, yeah, do you feel like I feel like short games aren't quite as celebrated now as they used to be?
But maybe I'm making that up.
Didn't it? Didn't it feel like, you know, we had we had a guy named Nickname, the boss of the moss. I feel like we don't celebrate just exquisite
short games anymore. And some of that is, this is a half baked
take, but I feel like all these guys have very similar skill
profiles now. And it's like, they're just very proficient in
everything. And so you don't have like the guys who don't
really hit it that
great, but God, they're demons around the green. Well, dude, I think, no, I think you're onto some
robbed of like the magic of different skill sets. I should say, I don't know if you're onto something,
but I know what you're saying. And I agree because I feel like there are, I've said this with Dustin
Johnson before too, where like you used to have guys who had one area of their game kind of almost turn into like memes. Right.
And that was like Dustin Johnson's driver back before everybody
drove it farther than Dustin Johnson. Now, you know, it's
like back then it was like he was the only guy doing it. And
every time he stepped up on a tee box, it was just like, Oh,
get ready. Dustin and you know, Bubba with curving the shot like
curving shots. And the last one I can really remember is like Spieth and making 25 footers.
You know, that's the only one that still is like, Oh man, watch out.
These are the, these are the ones that he really likes to make. I don't know.
I don't know if any players in recent years have really had those types of like
memes about their games, you know,
I feel like Phil did too, like Randy's point, or maybe whoever said it earlier,
like circuits shots, like he was just a temptations.
Like he was just a temptations. Like he was just a temptations. like, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I
don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I
don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I
don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I
don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don, Scotty, like, yeah, I don't know, man, just kind of does everything. He does it all really, really well. Drives a great hits his irons, great chips and putts. Pretty good. Xander, man. Yeah, he just kind of does it all. This is really good. You know, I should say Bryson in the length thing. Like that was more recent than Spieth. But yeah, it's not like, like, what's the guy that it's like, yeah, I don't know. It just kind of does it all. Vokey smoke it.
The NIT a couple years ago.
Yes.
Because somebody asked you guys, you guys set up the whole story.
Yeah.
Your best at setting this up.
Just set the scene because I know who it is.
I was looking it up all weekend.
It was driving.
Oh, no, I will never forget who it was.
So we were we were hosting the NIT, the nestEST Invitational Tournament at PGA Frisco two years ago.
And very, very fortunate to have Bob Voakey himself come to the event to do a Q&A with all the people there.
And one of the questions somebody asked him was like, basically this, like, man, you've designed wedges for all of these guys.
Like, who are the best wedge players, you know, who had kind of the best short games like you've ever seen?
And he's like, oh, man, you know, of course, you know, of course, Tigers up
there and you know, Phil's up there, of course. And you know, he rattled off like two others,
maybe I forget who else he kind of rattled off at like the tip top of his list, but it
was big, big, big names that, you know, you would, you would imagine he's like, and then
number five is no question, Brett Rumford. We're like, what?
I think he was number one.
He was like, it was one.
It was like the best skipper.
I best wedge player.
We're like, who like that guy that played like he played like three WGCs
randomly, like 2010.
That guy's oh, yeah.
Australian guy, like just an absolute stud.
The best, best I've ever seen.
Like, huh? Whoa. It was great. I was sitting near Randy and it was one of the few times I got to see the thrill and delight live. Who? A what?
He's a total curveball.
Oh gosh. All right. Let's keep going.
Hey, this is Nate Friday from Pittsburgh.
I'm going to be the host of the show.
I'm going to be the host of the show.
I'm going to be the host of the show. I'm. All right. Let's keep going.
Hey, this is Nate Friday from Pittsburgh.
Hello, Nate.
My question is to the boys.
First of all, Pittsburgh is not in the Midwest.
Thank you, Nate.
We're in our country of our own.
We're not the Northeast.
We're not the Midwest.
We're just the North and we're just the East.
So sorry, boys.
My question is why haven't you came to Pittsburgh yet on strapped?
Booth on the city, Booth on our town has some great courses around
Friendly people great food. So love to hear your insight. Thanks
Man Nate, I feel like your instincts are spot-on. There's no reason we haven't come to go
No ready scared because he's a Bengals fan and the Steelers
Yeah, it doesn't want to get beat up.
I've only been to Pittsburgh once.
I went and saw White Sox Pirates game when I was a much younger
lad, and I absolutely loved it.
Awesome city.
One of my favorite things in the world, mid-sized cities,
you know, places you can.
You got a pro football team, but you can also find a place to park.
I mean, that's like, that's it. You know, that's, that's everything.
Can you imagine we'd have to recreate a Jack Reacher scene?
She would be in hard heaven.
Nate, so yeah, it's a, it's a great question. I, I move it,
move it towards the top of the list. And I,
and I guess we'll take this opportunity also.
It's very topical because I have,
I've been deep in the edit Bay over the last week or we can change, uh,
working on the strap that we do have in the can. It's going to be coming soon is
all, all I'm going to say. That's all I'm going to DJ.
Does not want to give me a date because he's not ready to give me a date.
Well, here's what I'll say. I'll tip. That's good. Good ideas though. I feel like,
I feel like it's, it's got some fucking potential. I'll give this nugget to the people.
We're gonna edit this one differently.
Rather than being three episodes,
it's gonna be all one thing.
It's gonna be one standalone piece.
And people may not like that, but I think it is.
I'm 100% confident it is the right decision.
And what that means is like,
well, you're basically editing all three at once.
So usually I can like finish one
and then I have a week to edit the next one or two weeks to edit the next
one or whatever. Uh, so this one's like, well, we got to kind of get the whole thing done.
Uh, and so it takes a little longer, but be patient, be patient. Yeah, that's right. That's
exactly right. Exactly right. People are going to see what's been going on in my Amazonian
mind. Uh, God, big, we got to, I still feel like we didn't do a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a
little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little
bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit
of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit out of mouth. They just launched a new spring collection, 2025 spring collection on HBGolf.com.
You'll see some of that in the NLU Pro Shop here very soon. Fresh colors. We got some fresh color
stories, excuse me, fusion, deep teal, citron, marlin blue, Liberty red, Scotch pink. You guys
are talking about the Oscars pot. Not enough color in the movies these days. You know what? But H&B
is bringing it to the golf clothing. They've expanded on their aeration line of ventilated shirts, vests, layering, micro perforations, micro perforations,
macro comfort. There we go. Ben Griffin was rocking a nice H and B out there today. I was
cognizant of that. You know, H and B, it's the colors, but they do such a good job
of like, they keep the colors very like classy. You know, they're not cranking the saturation
up to a million, like some other clothing companies out there. And I think they do really
good stripes, where they don't look like little boy stripes, like what Spieth is dressed in
for fifth grade picture day. They look just like clean and crisp. And every year I feel
like it's a classy, classy look. So the colors, the colors just like clean and crisp. And every year I feel like it's a classy,
classy look. So the colors, the colors, just like, so I love it. Like you're right. They're never,
they're never too loud, but they stop in your tracks. That's such a hard combo to, to hit.
Exactly. They really did kind of stopping power. Yeah. They, they nail it. So they, the, uh,
I'm wearing the ward sweater, which is, you know, kind of the, maybe the all time best thing they've
ever created, just a, uh, the classic, but they also have that in a hoodie now, the Wallace, back
in new colors in black. They don't do a ton in black, but the black Wallace hoodie is
something you should check out. You can do that at hbgolf.com. Use NLU 10 for 10% off
your first order. It's one of the only discounts on the market and nest members
look out. Hopefully by Wednesday, we're going to have a nest exclusive discount live in
your member profiles. But right now, nlu10 at hbgolf.com for 10% off your first order.
I just want to clarify. It's the only H and B discount code on the market.
Well, the reason I said one of is because there's a nest discount coming in a couple I'm just going to pause real quick. TC left like five voicemails. That's why he's saying again, he left like five. This was, I thought the buzz,
I thought the buzz pertinent.
It's a question for Randy. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things. I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a couple of things.
I was doing a left like five. This was, I thought the most, I thought the most pertinent.
It's a question for Randy. I was disgusted this week by the cognizant in the Palm beaches,
the setup of the golf course, championship management and the PGA tours taken over from
the local organizers. And I guess they got some sort of mandate from top players that of course
was too hard, especially with Bay Hill next week and then the players too much difficult
golf in a row, got the over-seated rye, all this stuff.
Randy, what are we going to do about this?
Are we de-skilling the game?
This isn't the game that you and I grew up loving, loved during college, loved when we
started no laying up.
I'll hang up and listen, but talk me off the ledge here, big guy.
I need it.
DC is exactly right.
Unfortunately, I can't refute anything he's saying.
I think we're losing the war of,
I think they think that fans want to just see
a ton of birdies and maybe they do,
but I'm not that market.
It's very disappointing.
You know, and I was poking around the internet skies
and we can take this into our broader cognizant discussion.
But my guy from the Palm Beach Post,
Tom DiAngelo was pissed off as well.
And he had some great quotes in a story of his,
but one of them, Shane Lowry, quote,
that's why they're trying to make it easier.
They're trying to get people to play,
which I think is the wrong thing to do,
but you know I'm not the one setting up the golf course.
Guys like Shane Lowry, excuse me, recognize it.
It is a very
noticeable difference in how much easier this golf course is playing. I have some statistics for you,
DJ, because I know you're pissed off too. Mad as hell, Big. Yeah. Yeah. The first 14 years,
this tournament was held at PGA National.
The winning score reached double digits under par three times.
And then starting in 2021, the winning score has been 10 under or lower every year.
At Boston, Eckro won last year at 17 under.
That was a tournament record that
lasted a year. Joe Highsmith has now set the new tournament record at 19 under.
We had Jake Knapp shoot 59 in round one. Like it just, um, I,
I truly think TC's right. Like it's not a bit,
it's just not as interesting to me.
I don't think to watch guys just pin their ears back and try to make as many birdies as possible.
But I am I in the big minority on this or is this not?
I couldn't agree more.
Florida golf for me as an amateur, as a not that good of a golfer, is very difficult
when you watch a course like that.
And I find it more interesting to watch these guys struggle
relateably, like when the course is set up almost for them, like it would be for me.
Does that make sense?
Like to see them hit it in the water more to see, like, you know, you come through
the bear trap and it just yet didn't have the teeth, man.
You know, the the trap was a bear trap.
Parts of reason play like 150 yards. It just, yeah, didn't have the teeth, man. You know, the, the, the trap wasn't there. The bear trap, man. What's this world coming to?
Parts of the reason you're playing like 150 yards.
I know.
You wanna move the teeth up on the, on the bear trap.
I don't understand.
You're ripping all the bear's teeth out.
Like at least make those holes.
Their honey holes have like, have teeth.
I don't know.
It is, it is a, but I think Shane Lowry like,
probably does have a point.
Like they won't got, you know,
if you don't have to play in theory, but,
but also that seems like such a losing battle. Right.
And this is like the perfect example.
I think of the this game of whack a mole that the PJ tour has been playing for a
decade now where you're just constantly it's, it's,
you're just constantly trying to keep sponsors happy for long enough to get
them to re up.
And then you got to tackle the next sponsors who are upset
and change something for them.
And it's just as you see like the separation of big important
events and all the rest of events.
I don't know how you really put that toothpaste back in the
jar or back in the tube and say like, you know, all these
other events are super important.
That's what guys are going to gear up their season towards, but also
they're going to go play the cognizant and also they're
going to go play the Mexico Open and also like it's just not
going to happen. And that's where I'm just like, man, what
are you? Why are you trying to like, why don't I don't know?
Like it just feels like a fallacy that if we make it
easier, like these guys will these guys will come play. It's
like, no, you're you're doing that goes against everything
else that you're doing. And what I'm saying is like a golf fan. I'm
like, man, this tournament kind of had an identity as an ass
kicker as hard. And I was like, okay, I'm really excited to
watch it now. And now it I've never seen like, we'll get to
this in a second. But I've never seen like the reaction to a 59
just be like, man, fuck this. You know, just like a lot of
people were feeling on Thursday, at least, at least a lot of like long time golf
fans. And I don't think that's not much. And Lee, I think
that's just like, all right, man. Well, the reason to watch
this tournament was because it's hard. So ipso facto, you
know, what's really the reason to watch now? But Keith
Mitchell in the same Tom D'Angelo piece was quoted as
saying, and he won the 2019 cognizant before it got much easier.
Keith Mitchell says, quote, it's honestly what the viewers and the fans want to see.
Do they want to see a chance of shooting 59 or do they want to see us grinding it out to make
pars? And I just am like, no, like, who's doing these surveys? Is that really what people want to see? I just can't, I don't buy that.
I don't accept that.
Is that what the fan forward stuff is saying?
I have no idea if it is, I, I, they might be asking the wrong fans, I think,
because that's kind of where it's like you catch someone as a passerby on the
street and they're like, Oh no, would you like rather watch birdies or bogeys?
Like, well, that person's probably not going to watch either, no matter what they tell you. That's so true. You know, but it're like, Oh no, would you like rather watch birdies or bogeys? Like, well, that person's probably not going to watch either.
No matter what they tell you.
That's so true.
You know, but it's like, I will fucking watch it, man.
I watch it every year.
I've watched every year for 20 years.
Like, why don't I want to maybe care what I think.
At least or the classic Steve Jobs quote, like the P P people don't know what
they don't know what they want.
That's right.
So like you just, you guys are the experts, like set, set it up like it was working.
You know, like I have so many memories of that 18th hole being a,
you know, kind of a ball buster down the stretch, you know,
and like we didn't get it today because, you know,
it was, it was a tough finish,
but like I was looking forward to guys under pressure
coming down 18 and it's just, yeah, it, it, it, it,
that hits a little harder when they just,
they're hanging on for dear life on, you know,
15, 16 and 17 as well.
Well, to your point, I mean, like, what, what did we start with on this podcast is what
thrills and delights you about pro golf. It wasn't like, Oh man, I love when they hit
the fairway and then they like, just kind of hit a wedge up there to like six feet.
That's fucking awesome. I love when they do that. It's like, no, I watch. Yeah. It's, I don't know. I'm with you. I think,
I think we're all, we're on the same page here, but guys, we kind of danced around it a little bit.
Let's get to the back nine here. Should we, there's going to be an abbreviated back nine because
we've got, we've still got a lot to get to here. We got pace of play concerns here. We got a biker
gang behind us. Neil. Exactly right. We have talked about it a little bit already, but 24 year old Joe
Highsmith is your winner at the cognizant wins on the PJ tour for the first time, makes the cut on the number and
then go 64 64 on the weekend to win by two, as much as we were just bitching about the,
uh, the, you know, playability of the golf course.
I think that's pretty downright impressive, uh, no matter who you are.
He deserves credit cause he played his ass off today.
Yes.
Went out and got it as a first time winner.
A guy that, you know, listen, I didn't really
know his name before the 11th hole.
Awesome golf from him.
So I do just want that on the record.
Impressive stuff.
A couple, in case you're just hearing this name for the first
time, a couple little biographical bits
of information here.
Young man from Lakewood, Washington.
Always kind of a cheap thrill to see, you know, any pro golfers
from the Pacific Northwest. You know, I always like to see that.
And speaking of, he grew up at the same golf course in Tacoma as
the Putnam brothers, some of the other famous PGA Tour players
from the Northwest. Randy, I threw this in there for you.
Seems to be a massive, massive tennis guy.
You know, I saw that listed his favorite athletes as as Gail
Monfee's, Nick Curios and Dustin Brown. So loved that
hand up. No idea who Dustin Brown is. I had to look it up. I
think he's like a Jamaican tennis player or something like
that, I believe. So the first two guys have a lot of Yeah, a
lot of character, a lot of flair. Good, good for Joe. Those
are those are fun, fun tennis players. He also got I had to get on his Pepperdine player page to find this, looking for a little
more info about him. Listed his golfing hero as none other than Jordan Spieth.
I love that.
So, you know, kind of a Slenderman. He's got the bucket hat out there, massive tennis guy,
massive Spieth. All this is coalescing towards like, you know what?
He's been a guy rocking the bucket too to that thrills and delights me.
It was great.
So this is all like, you know, I'm in, I'm in, I'm in this
fantastic post-round interview too.
Very well spoken.
Just seems like just a, a real good, decent guy.
And you know what else I threw in there in our notes here?
I don't know if you guys saw this or not, but I mentioned Pepperdine this.
I mentioned this because immediately after he won,
one of his communications professors, shout out to Colin Storm, he reached out immediately with an
email. Hey guys, love the show. I had Joe in four classes at Pepperdine. I just wanted to pop in
and say, what a good guy he is. Hopefully this is the first of many for him. What I mean, we're passing
that on to the listeners of this show because that's, you know, it seems like the kind of
guy he is. So I just, you know, I hope college professors are doing that about me. What a
thrill to see that. So Colin, that's putting good karma out in the world. I love seeing
that.
Why college professors would not remember me. I didn't. I know.
I'm with you. I didn't go to office hours.
Hate that.
Very feast or famine rookie year for Highsmith
last year on tour.
At one point, you missed 10 out of 12 cuts last summer.
Didn't finish in the top 20 between I put this in there March and September.
End of March and September.
That's just a long time.
We talk about this a lot, but like, man, it's a lot of like getting on airplanes, picking up a rental car, driving to the golf course, getting your outfit laid out, playing a practice.
Right. And you just, you don't 10 out of 12 weeks, you don't even get paycheck is like, and that's only for one year. Right. There's a lot of guys out there doing that for just decades. And so always kind of worth shouting out that when, when someone kind of flips it around, it seems
like he found something at the end of last season, this conjecture for me, but like go
back to that ad read on switching golf balls, it goes T6, T16, fifth T11 to end the year
last year and is now a PJ tour winner. So shout out to Joe Highsmith. Anything else
on, on his front from you guys?
Nothing. Moving on. Luke Clanton secures his PGA Tour card making the cut this week.
Second player to earn his Tour card through PGA Tour University
accelerated following in Gordon Sargent's footsteps. I believe deferred and is now still in college, but second player to do that.
I'll just throw this out there as kind of a fly the banner for PGA Tour U. This is a guy that clearly needs to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that.
I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. I'm not going to be able to do that. Excited for Luke Linton. You guys think he's gonna be on the Ryder Cup team? How outrageous would that be?
Starting to look less outrageous doesn't seem scared
Yeah But I mean, I think he's got a win. Yeah. Yeah, I'd be shocked if if he made it honestly, but
Fun a fun player to you know, doesn't looking for doesn't look out of place exactly
Yeah, which is cool looking for things that thrill and delight us, Randy.
I think Luke Clanton's much closer to that than many other players.
We mentioned the tour making PJ national easier.
Just a bit of info on how the scoring average moves.
68.6 on Thursday.
That was the lowest, I believe in the tournament history, lowest of the week for sure.
Kind of went up throughout the week,
which is interesting, especially as you kind of cut
the bottom half of the field out, but up to 70.5 on Sunday,
still playing under par.
That's kind of a travesty for a tournament that,
you know, who's winning score used to be whatever,
like six under, four under, seven under.
To see it still playing under par for the field is
Tough these guys can't have like two
quote unquote difficult setups in a row. I it just
It's tough to get away from the pampered
And this also I would say when you hear that if you're yeah, you better turn Bay Hill like the fuck up if
That's what you're doing
like the fuck up if that's what you're doing. That's you. Don't need to be on his in anyway.
Exactly.
I think last note just from the cognizant and slash kind of, you know,
news and notes from the PGA tour Xander, your boy Neil is coming back from his,
his rib injury next week at Bay Hill. So that will be exciting to watch.
Allegedly coming back.
Allegedly.
We'll have to watch if he has a new sponsor.
All right. Hole number 11 here of the back nine.
Randy, does breaking 60 mean anything anymore?
What say you?
I don't think so.
Like what were your guys' reaction
when you heard Jake Knapp shot 59 on Thursday?
Like I could not have,
it could not have been more of a ho hum from me.
I think I'm totally desensitized to it.
Yeah, desensitized to it.
Yeah. Desensitized is the word. So I put in Slack, Jake Knapp has a putt for 58 and I
felt nothing. And that's after me talking about like how much I've kind of enjoyed watching
Jake Knapp play golf and how much I'm like, I'm like, yeah, just I'm deep in this strapped
at it, man. I don't know. I don't think I'm gonna be participating in that.
If he makes it, I'm sure the video is gonna be everywhere,
which could not be more different than how I felt,
I don't know, 2010, 2011, Stuart Appleby at the Greenbrier.
I'm like, cancel my meetings.
This is unbelievable.
He's gonna, he might do it.
Phil at the Phoenix Open, I'll be like,
this is one of my favorite moments ever.
You know?
And so it's, it's crazy that, uh, it's, it's happened, but yeah, I've,
I've, well, let's just move the, my answer to this, just move the goalpost,
make it 58, like call me when someone is 58 then more or 57.
Yeah.
New, a new scoring record, right?
Like let's, let's, uh, you know, everything else is going up.
We got, we got to take that down a strip.
It reminds me of the four minute mile, you know?
Yeah.
Like I was, and when I say it reminds me of like, it doesn't personally, cause I wasn't
around, but you know, once, once banister broke the four minute mile, that was it, man.
Everybody started to do it.
It's just, it's the cubes.
Randy Banister, the cubes, Sloan Kettering, they were all burning it down, man.
It's just become less and less of a thing.
I don't know.
I just fear.
The only, yeah.
That's where we're headed.
I'll like, yeah, just to reiterate this point.
I mean, we had this exact same conversation last year at the John Deere Classic.
I'll give you guys a thousand dollars if you tell me who shot 59 at the John Deere Classic last year.
Well, Cam Young shot at the Travelers last year.
So part of this problem is seemingly every week somebody on the corn fairy tour does
it. So that's part of the problem too.
Hayden Springer. Shout out to him.
Hayden Springer. That's right.
I have no idea.
All right.
Now this, I will say though, he does deserve credit because this was not a, uh, lift clean in place.
Totally. I mean, I've always said that's the one that, that,
that frustrates me. It's like, ah, man, if you guys are getting preferred lies,
I feel like that's got it. We have to have the, uh, you know,
separate categories here for those 59.
It's freakish freakish golf to go to shoot 59 on that golf course, no matter
the setup. It's outrageous to the point where it's almost like, yeah, the fact that it's
become desensitized is like kind of a travesty in itself, right? Because it's like, you're
kind of just ruining like a truly freakish.
It doesn't get me riled up though. I'm just kind of like-
Canary in a coal mine.
Exactly.
What are we doing? All right. Let's keep it moving big. Number 12. What do we got? 12? Let's go to Singapore. We mentioned at the top of the show, Dame Lydia Ko. This Singapore event was awesome. I don't know how much you guys were able to catch, but it was like the perfect prime time slot out here in Denver. It was like a 630 to 1030pm. It was an
internet I don't know who produced the telecast. It
certainly wasn't Golf Channel because it was really good. And
it just was it was a good golf course. It was a great leaderboard.
I truly an enjoyable event to watch. This event is considered
Asia's major. So it's like the biggest event in Asia
that they play each year.
Lydia Ko is so freaking good.
She was in complete, complete control of her golf ball.
She's given up like 25 yards off the tee to Gino Titicum
who ended up finishing tied for second.
But Lydia is just totally unflappable.
It, she's like coming back into top form. This
is her fourth win, I think, since January of 2024. And then on top of that, she also
won the Olympic gold medal. I just love this for the women's game. So you had Lydia Ko winning by four shots.
It's her 23rd LPGA Tour win in her career.
It was her first time winning this event in 11 attempts.
And I do want to spend just a second though
talking about Geno Titicum.
She's now had, since the start of 2022 guys,
she's had 43 top 10 finishes in LPGA events and
66 starts.
I was trying to like that's 13 more than Nelly has in that timeframe.
Tiger from 90, I was like trying to find like what's at least a close comp here in from 1998 through 2000 in 61 starts,
Tiger had 46 top tens.
So like she's not 43 and she has 43 and 66.
So it's, you know, she's, she's just trailing by a little.
Now the big difference, Tiger had 18 wins in that period.
Gino has four.
It's a lot of good.
Yeah. And good for the data has four. It's a lot of good. Yeah.
And...
It's good for the data golf points.
That's right. So I've been super bullish on Gino Titicum.
I think this is going to be a breakout year for, but I just love,
I feel like we have a big three in the women's game that that's really solidifying.
And you have a Hall of Fame or Lydia Ko, who's like a goat in the women's game that that's really solidifying. And you have a Hall of Famer, Lydia Ko, who's like a goat in the sport. You have Nellie Korda, who will be a Hall of Famer,
is completely in her prime. And then you have this 21-year-old Gino Titicum, who has a gorgeous golf
swing. She's one of the best putters on tour. And she's like, her floor is unbelievably high. I just am, this was a great event.
Nellie didn't play.
She doesn't play over in Asia at the start of the season.
But to have Lydia and Gino going head to head
was a real treat.
So we don't have to spend a lot of time here
because we will have an LPGA Spotlight episode
this coming Thursday. Cody and I will get
into a lot more of this. But really, really good tournament
out in Singapore.
Fantastic. I love it. That was a passion. I've been to the
Sentosa theme park, not the golf course, but the theme park. It
was it was great.
I lied. One other thing Charlie Hall, who also had a good week
this week, she finished tied for fourth. She said earlier in the
week, Neil, you'll get a kick out of this. They asked her what
her goal was this year. And thinking in a golf sense, but
she said her big goal this year is to run a sub 20 minute 5k.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah. They're like, that's your goal. She's like, that's my
goal. That's my goal this year.
I thought when you threw it to Neil, it was gonna to be, don't miss any putts you should bake.
I know that's one of Neil's favorite goals. Big, I'm going to stay, I'm going to stick with you.
Hole 13. What's going on in the DP world tour?
DP world tour, uh, drench city USA. One of TC.
You see some of these photos?
Drench city essay. Drench city essay.
Thank you. Thank you.
Did you see the photos from, from that golf course?
And it's just under like feet and feet of water, unbelievable images coming out of there.
The guys were just like wading through it. It was so bizarre.
Yeah.
Jarring stuff down at the South African open.
Yeah.
South African open.
You said top of the show, this, um, I apologize.
I'm not overly familiar with this game,
but this was his first DP World Tour victory, Dylan Nadeau,
but he was a local.
It sounded like total just home crowd favorite.
This was an event.
They reduced it down to 54 holes.
He came out, won a playoff over Laurie Kanter
on the first playoff hole.
A bunch of the cliques.
That's right.
But let me ask you guys,
did you guys see what this, this Dale Whitnell guy speaking
of images coming out of South Africa?
Did you see this guy's get down?
Oh, okay.
It looks like it's all good though.
It looks like AI.
You got to click the link there.
Deal.
You got to, you got to look at it.
I want to hear your reaction to see his, seeing his fit.
The goggles. Whoa. DC needs to put these in play. This is, this is the next level. Kind of a Horace Grant type of, type of aesthetic going on from our guy, Dale.
Swim goggles on, but anyway, this guy made two hole in ones in a round, I think on Thursday,
at one point he went three one three, which of course the Gilbert.
So a rocket mortgage should, should pay him 313 K.
He's still the dumbest funniest thing.
Maybe on the PGA tour, anyone goes three one three.
This guy proved it's possible though.
So I expect to see some guys making a run out of the best part about the rocket
mortgage has to be on those three holes.
So that's true. One of the most outrageous
things ever. Yeah. Please, please look up Dale Whittnall and his, his fit, his aesthetic
and his two hole in ones. If you, if you get some chance down on the, on the junior circuit,
men's and women's sides, a corn fairy tour. Justin Suh wins at the good doctors place, the jockey club down in Argentina.
His second corn fairy tour title does it with a five shot victory.
Broke the jockey club course record with a 60 in the second round,
which earns him a spot at the open at Royal Port Rush.
That's no joke.
Watch this space, potential post-hype sleeper, I think.
Justin Suh, guy that got a lot of run on this year podcast for quite a while
former player of the year on the corn fairy tour former world
amateur golf rankings number one, very decorated college
player and a guy that kind of battled some injuries I think I
think maybe had some weird timing stuff with COVID and
playing and like just, you know, his career didn't start the way
that many people thought it was going to and it looks like just, you know, his career didn't start the way that many people thought
it was going to and it looks like he's on his way to, you know, getting his game in
a very good spot. So watch out for him.
You think the good doctor would be tough that somebody shot 60 on at the jockey club?
It's interesting. I don't know enough about the jockey club, which leads me to my next
point. Also coming soon is going to be our film on TC and Cody and Ben and Wolfie's trip
down to Argentina where they played the jockey club.
So tough week not to have TC on,
but I promise we will have a lot of Argentina content coming and a awesome
podcast about their experience down there as well,
where they go into great detail about all the golf courses, the food all the travel all that it's just it's awesome
I was kind of the the host the avatar for the audience the guy who wasn't on the trip
But was kind of like wait wait wait stop
I don't know what you guys are talking about you need to fill me in on what that is
Type of guy and I think this podcast people are really gonna like so a lot of good Argentina stuff coming also
Speaking of which shout out to I think Diego Prone, I believe is his name, made his corn fairy tour debut and finished T16 to get
into next week's event in Chile. He's a young Argentinian guy and just like, that's national
open shit, man. You know, you, you said it with Naidoo in South Africa and like Tron, this is
another one of those like, yeah, it's a bit when he talks
about the magical Kenya open and it's a bit when he talks about some of this stuff, but
also, this is a thrill and delight for TC under all of that stuff.
Like watching the hometown guy go ball out in the national open and his first chance
to do so it's fucking cool.
Right.
So that stuff should be important.
I guess there was a guy who won the New Zealand open that was
literally used to be in a biker game.
Yes.
Maybe a bikey.
It's a bikey sir.
Yeah.
That's on my list of things to really dive into this week.
Also, what's the, what's the, I saw a clip of the New Zealand,
the warrior dance is the Hawkeye.
Yeah.
During the trophy ceremony at Oka.
No, those are the shoes.
Yeah.
Okay.
They were, they give him the Hawkeye while he's holding the trophy is pretty powerfulka. No, those are the shoes. Yeah. They were, they gave him the Haka while he's holding the trophy.
It's pretty powerful stuff. I mean, again, national, national open shit.
Yeah. So listen, shout out to TC. He, he might've boomeranged us on that one too.
I mentioned this at the top, but on the Epson tour, Riley Smith is your winner
playoff over Matilda Castron down in winter Haven, Florida. Shout out to our guy.
Was it squeezer hot cuts? Just, just outside of Orlando there.
First time winning on the Epson tour for her out of the university of Virginia.
Quick TGL check in. This is quick.
Bay whipped ass on Jukeblinks six to three kids stinks.
Atlanta drive beat up on Boston common.
Still Rory's team still winless.
I don't know where they're going.
Is this making you concerned with key ball frauds, man?
In the Ryder Cup?
Yeah, it's not great.
I don't know.
I have a little pride, guys.
For sure.
I mean, Rory's starting this league.
He's not even going to...
Most of the teams make the playoffs.
He's not even going to make the playoffs.
It's tough. Bad. A couple the teams make the playoffs. He's not even going to make the playoffs. It's bad. It's tough. A couple
notable things from TGL. Very interested just very simply
that Brooks was in the house. Brooks was attending. I know
obviously lives there and probably just wanted to come
check it out. But TGL is expressly a PGA Tour product
owned by the PGA Tour open only to PGA Tour players. Just an
interesting thing that Brooks is in the house. Probably means I think it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a,
it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, and delighted by this one big. Just a message TC hit our Slack thread. Yeah. I wasn't watching and I was catching up on the Slack thread and TC had been watching the TGL.
He's kind of giving play by play and then I keep scrolling and he just says, I'm losing
interest pretty rapidly. And I was like, God, if there's ever going to be an epitaph for TGL, I think we have that.
That's going to be tough to beat. We'll see though.
As we round out kind of the regular season, we make our way for the playoffs here.
I feel like my position on TGL has kind of remained pretty much the same, which is like when I watch it, I always have like a pretty,
pretty good time. You know, if it's close, there's always at least a couple shots where I'm like,
that's, yeah, that's right. Can I give you an analogy? But if I miss it,
I cannot tell you how much my life just goes on as normal. You know, I feel very similar. It's
harmless getting golf in prime time. I think it's a net net good thing for the game, blah,
blah, blah. It reminds me of break dancing in the Olympics.
Specifically, when I was watching that stuff in the
Olympics, it's like the opening, you know, salvo, you're like,
oh, that's a sick headspin. Oh my God. And then it gets to like
the third back and forth. Like I fucking saw that move. All
right. I move already.
I got stuff to do.
The Olympics does this belong in the Olympics. And like, I fucking saw that move already. I had that move already. And that's how the holes feel. I got stuff to do. And I'm like, does this belong in the Olympics? Does this belong in the Olympics? And then Kissner is like that Australian lady that stunk. And you're like, is this real? Like,
you know, the like interpretive dance lady. And that's kind of how I feel when I watch
the TGL stuff. I'm like hyped to see it. And then I'm like, oh man, I, the windmill, you
did that one. Like Ray Gun was the Australian.
That's right.
Ray Gun and Rumford, two random Aussies getting a shout out.
All right. Let's keep moving here. Some, some less, less fun news.
A tough week at the global home. It sounds like as a, you know,
PJ tour HQ was hit with, with quite a few layoffs pointing this out just as
kind of a I don't know a next a next move a next kind of wrinkle in the the world of pro golf.
PJ Tour does not have big sweeping layoffs very frequently and this was this was a time where
they felt that that was necessary. So I don't know if this means, I don't know what this means.
I guess I'll pause there, but any big reaction from you guys?
It sucks for the people.
I don't want to make light of that at all.
I think the word that we've heard, you know, SSG as new investors into the PGA tour, I've heard,
you know, they want to cut like tens of millions in payroll over the next 12 months. So it sounds
like there's going to be probably more of this coming. I think the thing that continues to shock
us internally is like,
how does Jay Monahan still have a freaking job? Along with some of these other executives.
Like I, listen, if, if, if you want to make change and we've been calling on them to make
change, like I understand the realities, this, this being part of it, I guess, but to not
address any of like the leadership level yet is just seems I don't understand it.
And I can't imagine like working there and looking around and being like seeing colleagues
lose their jobs. Well, the people that have like kind of been responsible for a lot of this still
like J Monahan made $23 million last year. It just is.
You want to find tens of millions of dollars. You could do a little bit more efficiently. It's like the, the skit with the hot, the hot dog costume. Like we're all trying to figure out who
did this. It's like, what are you talking about? Exactly. You know, and it's like people on the
content site, we just opened up this like studio with hunt for hundreds of millions of dollars
designed by, you know, like it's, it's, it's a gorgeous facility. And then it's like, okay, I don't know. Yeah. The optics stink. Obviously new leadership,
new investors, they're going to want to make some cuts, but it's like, does anybody want to do the
hard, the hard cuts? Does anybody actually want to like address the issue? Because it's at the top.
It's not like, I don't know. I don't feel like it's. And it also comes back to the week to week
product, which, you know, we've been talking about prior in this show is like, do you want to watch a bunch of guys like hit it 3 30 and wedge it and try to shoot 59?
I there's just a ton of work still to do on like the product itself, I think.
Yeah, well said. I think these, to me, the like layoffs like this are easier to understand
if you'd laid off the, the, the leadership or some, some leadership and then they come
in and they want to bring their people with them. Do you know what I mean? Like right
now it's like, this is like your, this is step three. What was step one is like, let's,
let's get a fresh set of eyes on this, man. Yeah. I think especially if, you know, cause
you kind of hear both sides from people inside
and outside the organization.
And, you know, I think as a outside observer,
it's pretty hard not to connect the dots of like, all right,
well, you just got a bunch,
basically new kind of private equity investors,
and then you cut a bunch of jobs.
It's hard not to tie those two things together.
And then you hear from other people like,
now it's actually, it's more of a re rebuilding
restructuring. We're trying to do things a lot differently. And
that's where I'm like, all right, well, even if things got
bloated at the PJ tour, first of all, that's not the fault of the
people that got laid off that continues to suck for them to be
the people to pay the cost. But second, it's like, Oh, well, how
did it get like that? Like, who's the leadership
that's being fired? Who's the leadership that's being changed? Like, how did, how did, if
you're telling me, if you're telling me things are like, are bloated and, you know, overstuffed,
it's like, well, it's the lifelong kind of day to day workers that you're going to get
rid of. What are you talking about guys? And that's, that's where it just leaves a pretty bad taste in your mouth.
But I don't know some of the, it's more palace intrigue. I'm sure to,
to dig into a next week at the players, which again is tough timing for,
uh, for a lot of this stuff. I'm sure for a lot of the people in our,
our beloved North Florida, but big.
Yeah. No, I'm going to wrestle control. We got, you said Oscars. We're a whole 17.
We see the clubhouse. I, we're gonna have to check out our trap. We're gonna have to hit a shot here,
too big. We get to 17. If any movie buffs, check out our trap for all we did in Oscars extravaganza
with our good buddy, Tim Simons. Can I just say guys, I listened to start to finish. I loved it. I have just a deep,
deep FOMO. You know, it's like, it's like I got out, you know, my investment went south. I was
like, I'm getting out of this investment. Now it's just, you know, to the moon. I did not hodl my
spot on the, on the Oscars. But you know what? I think you're welcome back. No, no, no. But Joe, that is so much better. And, you know, and, and when he starts getting, that was fucking, yeah,
a lot of bombs. The boys got, it's me jacked up. You know, it's like, I,
God, I got that shit tattooed in my dick with spare baby.
My mom was like, she listened to, she's like, Oh my God, Tim Simons.
I didn't realize, you know, she's like connected the Dodge.
She's like, I love that cloud botherer. I can't believe they're doing that. I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm halfway through the brutalist now, but I want to give you a compliment. It made me want to go watch all of the movies. Like I was like, man, I got to see this now.
Like I didn't even, I never even heard of Nickel boys.
I got to check this out.
Great.
Got to check Amelia Perez.
Maybe not, but the rest of them, I think I would like to see.
Do you think anybody on tour has seen all 10 best picture nominees?
No, I don't.
No, I don't know.
There's a lot of people on tour.
A lot of movies.
Like if anybody knows of any big movie buffs on
tour, please reach out. Hit the listener. That was one of my things. We did the food
pod with Keith Mitchell. He's shouting out, Bo Hossler is just a coffee savant.
You need to do a book one with Lucas Glover.
So if you know of any tour players that are movie buffs,
because there's no better job in the world to see movies.
You're traveling the whole time.
Like, rain delays.
You're always, there's a movie theater in every city.
You can go catch a flick.
God, Dej, remember when we went to see American fiction?
Yeah, at Beville.
In Monterey last year?
I've probably gone to the movies with Max
when he's at events before. He's like, dude, I played it. In Monterey last year? I've probably gone to the movies with Max when he's at events before.
He's like, dude, I played it.
I'm done at noon.
I've got nothing to do until I go to bed.
Yeah, let's go see the Batman movie.
Yeah.
Anyways.
All right, Big, we'll do it real quick.
But you called out here, you said, I want to know a tour player for each of the best
picture nominees.
I can rattle off mine real quick if you want.
Let's go. I don't have all 10, but yeah, let's go one for one until I run out and then you give me the rest. What's your favorite one? Starting with Enora, I'm going to go James Piot. The
US Am champ that famously joined Liv, just a complete pawn in the entire saga of the war of
pro golf. A guy that like all of a sudden gets thrown into these $20 million purses, just really no, no reason to be there.
I was going to say Taylor Guch.
Yeah, that's a good one too.
But I think, but I think Guch like kind of massively came out, like I don't think
he's got any regrets.
Whereas James Piot now is just truly just chewed up and kind of, kind of spit.
He's like on the high flyers kind of sorta.
It's just no real bright future in pro golf seemingly. Just the movie ends
and I don't know if it's, if you're going to feel real great about that, but what'd you have?
I liked that one. I was thinking like Vic Doobie song. I was thinking more of just like a total
playboy that seemed like he just loved to party from, from all accounts. So I, I didn't feel great
about that one. The brutalist though, which is, I don't think I'm spoiling
anything. It's a movie literally about just everything. Like it
asks every question. It examines, you know, the human
condition. I had like Tiger Phil here, like guys that are, you
know, it's just, it's everything, everything,
brilliant, talented, idealistic dude who was's like kind of an egomaniac
You know taking money from weird sources. You can go ply his craft. I think that's I think that's that's gotta be Phil
Complete unknown take any like recent tour winner Brian
No offense to my new
I was gonna say Xander here where it's like, based on how you guys, I haven't seen the movie, but how you described it, like, man, just, you know, great performance, but like, yeah, it's probably not going to win.
Should win best picture. It's a bit of a, I had to just like, Oh, and he can, it's like, and he can sing. It's like, Oh yeah. And Xander's a great put comp and I threw up Ben Hogan as just like,
yeah, kind of rumors and whispers on his backstory, where he came from, kind of tall tales.
But then just like also kind of a seemingly pretty mean guy, but also like maybe the best
to ever do it, you know?
And it just kind of can't really, I was pretty, I was pretty proud of that one.
Would you have, I struggled with conflict.
I just, I had the whole PGL, the whole premier golf league situation and all the dudes who, you
know, they're, they're throwing out business plans or getting them yanked away.
Just again, palace intrigue, uh, just like complete, uh, you know, just, just met a lot
of men in rooms talking, you know, like we're hitting this thing.
What's important. We're, we're doing this for the game. This is all I'm doing this.
I have pure intentions here. And then, you know, a true, just shocking ending.
Surprise. I think all that stuff went.
I had like either Phil or Dustin Johnson here, where you just like,
I probably feel where it's like, Oh my God, he won the PGA.
And then it's just like, well, what's this ending? Like, are you serious, dude? Like you look like a freaking offensive
coordinator, like on a Zempik. Like what happened? Doon part two, Neil, I'll kind of go with
everything you said about Xander, just like an absolute feat. What a, what a film. Okay.
Also kind of easy to miss it very easy if you're like, Oh yeah, I don't really remember what
happened. He's kind of like a bad guy now. Oh, I have Rory. I felt very strongly about Rory. I could see a, a, a universe in five years
where it's like, wait, is Rory a baddie now? That's really good. Amelia Perez. I threw out Bryson.
Just a complete spectacle. That's, that's like pretty cringy. That's good. I had Bryson for wicked.
Yeah. Like sounds and lights where I could, we're here.
We're hearing colors. We're seeing sound.
I can see that as well.
Bryson. That's a good one. That's a great one for a billion.
I'm still here. Amazing film. Go seek that one out. If you can.
Brazilian, Brazilian movie. I threw out Adam Scott,
just someone who, you know, seemingly kind of had this perfect sort of anonymous life cooked up, you know, and some stuff happens.
And now all of a sudden he's like in White House meetings with DT and Yostar, and he's
just fighting for what he thinks is right and trying to, trying to get the world back
on track. You know, but, but I could see him in that house in Rio that sun splashed house,
everybody at the beach surfing, like at the beginning of that movie,
I could see him fitting in really well, really well there. Yeah.
Uh, nickel boys was a really tough one. Well, nickel boys is a,
it's a tough one to, to, uh, yeah, cheapen. That's a,
I didn't see it so I can speak ignorantly about it,
but based on your description on the Oscars pod, I'm going to say Patrick Reed. Half of the, half of the equation.
I threw, I threw out Scotty.
Hey, yeah.
Just like people say he's stealing out of a locker to the Gus estate.
Just got it.
Got things off on the wrong foot.
You know, well, I threw out Scotty as a guy that she's, you know, good
guy, wrongfully arrested, you know, and that was, but that was about the best
parallel I could make there.
I had the best parallel.
I had the best parallel.
I had the best parallel. I had the best parallel., you know, and that was about the best parallel I could make there. I had this is dark,
but like reminded me of a little bit of like Tony Lima. Sure. Where's like, man, he seemed like
really good, bright future. Yeah. Just like cut down to her. Yeah. Anyway, the substance, I threw out the cat. I don't even know that I can
really justify that. It's just kind of a, that's where my mind went, you know, is, is
well, I think cat's done a lot to his body. That's going to be a Dorian Dorian gray situation.
I was thinking like Ricky Fowler for that, you know, just like, you know, what,
what, what are we really doing here? Yeah. Um, and wicked, I had our guy team Rose, just a complete,
like, like a complete theatrical goon that is not ultimately probably for me, but also my cast,
you know, quite, it's quite a feat still. Aria Grande, man. What a, what a performance really.
Oh my God. What a voice.
How can a player in the interview? I'm holding space.
I'm still holding. Yeah, still holding space. It's awesome.
Yeah. Holding space. Awesome posts about it.
Really?
Yeah. I mean, I saw, I saw some posts. All right. Ninth hole.
We've got it. We've got a guest, a guest here. Solly hopped on the phone with Thomas Detry.
You surely saw and heard us talk about his win
at the Phoenix open a couple of weeks ago.
Solly had a, we had a chance to talk to him.
We didn't know really what direction to take it.
And so I had a good idea to just kind of get very nitty gritty
on what it's like to close out a PGA Tour victory.
So here is the conversation with Thomas Detry.
All right, Thomas, you get out to a lead on Saturday night.
It's a five shot lead.
You're the odds on favorite going into Sunday.
It's going to be a wild atmosphere, but you're 24 hours away from
the conclusion of this thing.
What's, what's Saturday night like?
Is it a routine night or is it a little bit different?
I mean, we just talked about it.
You've got two, three kids under the age of two.
I've got two under the age of three.
So I'm lucky enough to have my wife.
We're traveling every week together.
I've got two young babies.
We're kinda, in a way it helps me.
It gives me a good balance
and we're just kinda sticking to the routine,
putting them to sleep, preparing, prepping the milk bottles, like all that little
stuff.
So that was kind of, it was key.
I thought it was key to have them to kind of keep my mind off of that five shot lead.
I was there as soon as they were into bed, the kids were in bed, it was just, you know,
it kind of crept in and I did feel nervous.
Like I didn't sleep great Saturday night, I'm not gonna lie.
I didn't actually sleep great on Friday night either,
but Saturday night I was just like,
keep dreams in your mind.
And then I remember waking up at 3 a.m.
and not being able to fall back asleep
and annoying my wife trying to talk to her.
She didn't wanna talk to me because she was tired.
She was like, yeah, I mean,
that's kind of how Saturday night went.
Well, you're killing me here
because my main excuse for my golf going to crap
is the fact that I've got young kids.
But here you are accelerating in your career as you've got young kids
and doing all the baby stuff here.
I was wondering, like, man, are the pros, are they are they, you know,
giving somebody else the baby tasks so they could focus on things
and not get stressed about it?
But some do, but we we're kind of we of pretty grounded parents and we'd like to
do it all ourselves and I mean it's part of my routine I mean I haven't put my
girls to sleep I've done it every single now every single night now for the last
like two years so I can't really remember one night maybe maybe one night
where I have a really late tea time and I get home and I get dirty or something
like that but yeah just put them to sleep every night. We together all the time.
It's pretty awesome.
It's awesome.
Well, all skill level of golfers have a moment,
a time in a round or a part of their golfing life
where the golf starts to get more important,
where they feel pressure to break 90, to break 100,
to break 80, to break 70, whatever that.
So everybody kind of goes through this,
but at your competitive level, it's you're trying to win on the PGA tour for the first time. And we've all felt
that feeling of like, when the golf gets more important, the club can feel a little different.
The thought process might feel a little different when you go to tee it up on that Sunday with a
five shot lead. Does it feel different than it has in the past? A hundred percent, you know,
I've struggled in the past. I've been in that position now many times and I've come
to struggle in the past. I actually opened up to a few people about that and it got to
my head. I haven't really been able to get a good Sunday out of it. It got to the point
where I remember specifically a few times where on a Friday or on a Saturday I would
be in contention and doing really well and making of making birdies and only wishing to not make birdies, to not put myself in
that position.
That's kind of the point where it got, you know, like it feels a bit sad to talk about
that, but it's true.
Like we're humans and, you know, it was kind of one of my weaknesses and yeah, I mean,
it was just a really horrible place.
Knowing, I remember, it was just a really horrible place. Knowing, I remember, not a vivid memory,
I remember last year or two years ago,
I was doing really well at the BMW PGA Championship.
I went to the DP World Tour and I remember leading on Friday
and kind of almost towards the last couple of holes,
almost wishing to make a birdie
because I knew what was coming.
Like I knew it was kind of a contending weekend coming up,
pressure, heavy arms.
And you know, I feel like by putting myself in position more and more I started to kind of not have that
thought anymore like it was kind of going away. I felt more and more
comfortable. I used to be not comfortable on a Saturday morning. I've played well
on Saturdays and kept putting myself in convention for Sunday as well. So I felt
like there was progress because on a Saturday where I used to be feeling really
shit and I would have blown it up on Saturday, in Maui for example, I had a great Saturday.
So I shot eight under, put myself in position again for the weekend.
So I kind of took some really positive stuff out of that week for example and we talked
about it with my wife and I was like, you know, like, look, look at me.
Like I've progressed like I haven't had the usual Saturday.
I have great Saturday in Maui.
So that was kind of a big thing to prove to myself that I was that there was progress
happening.
And yeah, I mean, the rest is history.
I mean, Phoenix, that was a pretty cool Sunday.
I was nervous on Sunday morning.
I've talked to some people in the past about what I've done.
You know, I've started meditating a little bit
and I've started doing some ice baths in the mornings as well
in the evening and in the mornings as well.
It kind of shocks my body and it has helped me definitely.
Cause that's where there's so much of pro golf
that is about practice, about routine, about process,
about honing your swing all you want on the range,
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, but there's no, you can't practice playing under pressure.
You can a little bit like, you know, you can play money games and things like that,
but it's everything is different under those, those pressure moments.
So when you're playing as good as you are, like to get up to a five shot lead,
when you're playing that good, does the fact that you're I've heard players say,
you know, I'm more nervous around the cut line than I am in contention because my game isn't very good if I'm on the cut line.
But if I'm in contention, my game's good.
In this particular week, because you're-
That's funny you mentioned that.
For some reason, when I'm around the cut line,
I always have this kind of grind mode in me
and I'm never nervous and I always grind.
I mean, I tend to, I miss very little cuts
and it's almost not a good thing
because sometimes I just make a cut on a number and you know you play the weekend nothing much
comes out of it but I'm never really nervous it's kind of the opposite where I mean I tend to be
nervous on Sundays you know so that's funny that you mentioned that. So like but the fact that
you're up by five like are you able to trust it you know what I mean are you saying like I can
override these nerves with like how incredibly well I'm playing?
Sunday morning in Phoenix, like we all know the course and the front nine is like, it's
just statistically tougher.
Like if you, I knew that with a five shot lead, if I could be anywhere on the par on
the front nine, it was kind of a mini win, you know?
And then I was kind of compartmentalizing the round, kind of thinking, okay, there's
a front nine to get through.
It's part five, there's a couple of birdie chances at the start, but you need to manage
the front nine.
And if I can manage the front nine, I knew I'd kind of go into the back nine with not
a comfortable lead, because it's never a comfortable lead out there, but a nice little margin.
And then I knew that, obviously, 10 birdie-ish hole, 11 super
important tee shot.
So it was in my mind and I remember kind of feeling a bit nervous, but I remember stepping
up like my caddy almost wanted to give me like a hybrid being more conservative and
I was driving well the whole week and I was just like, you know, I'm just trusting myself.
I'm just hitting this low cut, bullet cut and that tee shot on 11 was just key. And again, the tee shot on 15 were key.
I think those were kind of the three moments
was like making the turn on the par,
because I knew that was giving me a nice comfortable lead,
and then tee shot in 11, tee shot on 15.
Obviously, every single shot is important,
but the way the course is designed,
like these tee shots, I thought were pretty important. on the way the course is designed,
these tee shots I thought were pretty important.
Tell me you pulled that approach into 11, by the way,
the back left pin and you absolutely stuffed it.
I did.
Okay, good.
I did, I did.
You know what, the wind was kind of light and variable
and it was in two of the lefts.
Not an easy tee shot, but then it was just a perfect yardage
for me with my niner and the wind kind of dropped.
Like the second I hit it, the wind kind of dropped.
So this bowl, the bowl actually started on my target line.
I was planning on drawing it kind of to kind of hold
the middle of the green and it just kind of kept drawing.
And I was like, oh, wait a minute, wait a minute.
On the camera angle, it looks very tight left,
but it was always on the strong side.
It was always on the strong side.
And then it kind of obviously spun left,
but yeah, it
definitely was cool.
Well, because you get, it's such an interesting golf course to watch always. And that's where
I was, I remember thinking this, watching it of like, it's a course that if you're behind,
a lot of those holes can look like green light, 15, 16, 17 can look like green lights of,
all right, I'm going to go get this guy, which you know the the guys behind you are thinking that, but also some of those shots look a little
bit different when you've got a bigger lead.
It's like, are you striped the drive on 15?
It's two 13.
I think you had flag, you know, you've got a big lead, you know, but you,
that water's there.
Like it was there ever a thought, you know, that shot just looks different.
Yeah.
You know, it's, I think it's such a quality golf course.
And you obviously know the golf course.
Most people that watch the event every year
kind of recognize the course.
And they know what they know.
They're not as finishing holes.
It's like every good golf course has this attribute.
You think of Augusta.
Everybody knows the back nine at Augusta.
You think of the players.
Everybody knows 16 reachable, 17, and 18.
You got to step on that drive.
So I really think that TPC you got to step on that drive.
So I really think that TPC Scottsdale really has kind of that attribute and just everything
happens.
Everything can happen.
And yeah, I mean, you're right on 15.
That's kind of why I knew it was a key drive because obviously you pull it left, it's wet.
You push it right, it's desert.
And it was slightly downwind.
And then if I smoked one, which I I did only had seven iron to the green so it was 213
But you know you're just kind of trying to hit it to the middle of the green to the front edge of the green
And that's kind of I knew that with a good drive seven iron in I know it's not in green
But it's supposed to be good enough to be able to hit in the middle there which which it's still not an easy tee shot
But but yeah, it was only a seven iron with a little breeze helping so it was it was pretty nice.
If that had been 5 iron would that have been a different decision?
Yeah I mean I think I think it would have been you know because the green looks
wide but it's not that wide I mean it's surrounded by the right trap is no good
left is okay but then it's just a tricky like bunker shot you feel like you're
gonna almost chip it in the water so, I definitely think that if I was coming in with
four or five earned, it would have been like, kind of, do we go for it? Do we not go for it moment?
Like, Berger birdies it and you birdie it, but like your lead still only three when you get to 16
and you got some variance in those final holes. And you know, I was watching, because I was never really looking at the leaderboard,
but when I watched some of the highlights,
I see Berger making that putt on 15,
and suddenly my lead was only two.
I had like, I think, a five or six footer,
and suddenly my lead, if I don't make that one,
I go into 16 with two shot leads.
I'm like, actually, I'm pretty happy I made that putt.
And I mean moving
forward now on 60 and actually he obviously makes birdie so he has the
honor and smokes a 9 iron and I kind of I was kind of in between little 8
hard 9 and he just smokes his 9 iron and I kind of traps draw a little win
down off the right and it takes one bounce over and I'm like, Oh, wait a minute.
It's definitely not an eight iron, definitely not a full blast at nine iron heaters.
So I kind of took off a little bit and I think the adrenaline kind of took care of the rest.
And I mean, it was also a shock.
It's pretty cool in the circumstances in that area, in the stadium.
It's pretty awesome.
Cause there's risk getting to that back pin as well.
I was like, does this guy just have his blinders on?
He's trying to birdie every once to win this by seven.
Like, I was shocked.
The adrenaline just trying to hit it to the middle of the green.
Again, you know, it's one of those little moments sometimes
that which you need, you need a bit of I don't know if it's luck,
but it's it's just a kind of a winning moment where, you know, like he
he hits it over the green and it was just like almost a blessing that he made that put on 15
because he showed us when what not to do, you know, so some of those little moments
that I think you need during a golf tournament to, to win, you know.
So when you get to 17 now, you know, it's you had a nice shot right to the front of
the green, but I'm guessing the lead is big enough at that point where you're not worried about much
of anything at this point, you pull driver on 18 as well.
I mean, do you feel like it's, it's in good hands by the time you get to 17?
You know, after that tee shot, I didn't realize actually how close to show up
in 16 until I actually walked there.
You know, I knew it was good because I could see the ball, like, cause I
thought burgers ball looked great.
And then you could kind of slowly saw it like disappearing over the green. So on 16 I didn't realize how close it was.
But once I got there I was like looking pretty good now. But I think at that time it was
I mean at that time he gave me because he bogeyed. So he gave me a five shot lead. So
honestly I was kind of free rolling from there on. You know what I mean. And I was pretty
happy because I mean you've played TPC Scottsdale right? I never have, I've been there but never played it.
Yeah. 17, I mean it doesn't do it justice, TV doesn't do it justice how tricky and
horrible that pin is. It's just like the greens are so slick, they're like mirror
fast and it kind of all goes like that, you almost don't even see the hole
because the green is like elevated and then kind of slopes down towards the water.
And anything going with pace pass hole is pretty much wet.
I mean, it pretty much.
So it's not a type of hole that you want to be going in
with a one shot lead, kind of trying to defend something.
So the five shot lead was very helpful.
And then again, 18, same thing, just kind of free rolling,
you know, kind of downwind.
So the water on the left isn't really in place.
So it just could smoke something,
just hit it hard over the water,
just take the water out of play.
And I mean, I hit it in the middle of the fairway,
which was nice again.
With all the struggles you've had in contention
and to win tournaments, are you walking up like,
am I up by six?
Like, how did I do this?
I thought it was gonna be hard when I did.
But you know, it was a seven shot win in the end,
but it never really felt like it.
Like, we just talked about it on 15.
I mean, it could have been a two shot.
So it was kind of, they were pretty,
they were pushing the whole day.
But yeah, on 18, kind of the pressure was on all day.
And I wasn't even really realizing until I hit
that drive and my caddy gave me a little tap on the back and said, just enjoy this moment
because it doesn't come too often.
Some players never come, but some other players it comes very often.
I think of Scottie like the amount of time that happened to him last year.
It's on the stage there, the tournament. I mean, it's awesome.
It's not a signature event, it's not a major,
but it just feels just like it.
You know, it's so many people, the course is awesome.
It's a big time event.
And I mean, I couldn't be prouder to everyone that week,
to be honest.
100%.
It's an event with history,
and everybody looks forward to watching that one.
Exactly, right.
You know, every winter.
But so what's, you've seen all your buddies
and all these people who have their families run out
onto the green to greet them on the 72nd hole.
This finally happens to you.
What are the emotions like at that point?
That's so cool.
You know, I never really thought about that.
And then I was just so in the zone.
I wasn't even thinking of the family.
When suddenly I show up on the green
and I see my two little ones just standing there like
I think I saw one of the videos where like
Alba or one and a half year old starts clapping even before my putt goes in she's so funny
She kind of lose balance and then she looks around and then starts clapping again. She's so cute. Honestly. Yeah again
You know like I've my life everything has gone so fast, you know, I've got two girls now
Married went on a pediatric tour. You know, I've got two girls now married,
went on a PGA tour.
I mean, it's pretty cool.
And you, the amount of time I've seen winners
with their families there on 18,
it's pretty amazing that it finally happens to me.
And just memories for life, really.
I don't think my girls will remember that unfortunately,
but I will definitely.
100%, 100%.
What the last question I have for you, you win, I imagine the celebration's
probably not too crazy with the little ones in the bedtime like you're talking about.
But what's it like going into the next week?
What's it like you're putting the peg back in the ground and gonna go tee it up?
And is it hard to go be competitive again immediately after that?
It is, and then you know I mean you have
case it was just the weirdest finish because you know you have all these
immediate duties after the round you stayed on the golf course signed things
and so we just got home just knackered put the girls to sleep again do the
routine pack up the bags because the next morning we wake up at 5 a.m.
because we have to catch an 8 a.m. American Airlines flight with the baby
so it was just like really weird and then
once we got to San Diego for the Genesis we kind of all got a little bit sick as
well so it was just like it we didn't really enjoy that week after and
obviously being at Torrey Pines on a brutal course just just it was just not
fun you know I was just kind of hoping that week to finish and it's a shame
because it was such a good tournament and it's signature events you want to do well on those but yeah I just didn't have
it in me and it's just kind of everybody comes and congratulates you like it was just a weird week
like I'm happy I'm taking two weeks off now to kind of reset and back to normal at Bay Hill next
week. Well we'll put you back on the path for your vacation. I see you're in the Dominican.
It looks very tropical and looks like a place
where you could sit back and relax.
So we appreciate you spending some time with us
relaying tales from a couple of weeks ago.
So really appreciate your time, Thomas.
Congratulations.
And we look forward to it.
We'll see you at Augusta here shortly.
See you at Augusta.

Any Arnold Palmer stories?
I feel like that'd be a fun prompt.
In honor of Bay Hill.
That's a good one.
He's gotta have a fun one. If you met Mr Mr. Palmer or if you know of any good stories, but ideally,
hopefully they're true.
We're going to scream them.
Hopefully they're true. So, you know, be cool. Don't put us in a bad spot.
Squeezy hot cuts.
That's a good one. Arnold Palmer stories. We'll be on the lookout for those.
And then busy content week, Dej. What do we got cooking?
Yeah. God, we recorded a pod last week that's months in the
making that I had such a blast working on with Sallie and TC
and KVV. We're calling it our scavenger hunt pod. Basically,
all of us had $200 to spend on any golf memorabilia we could
find. And we, we took a couple months to scour the internet,
see what we could come up with. And then, uh,
it had kind of a show and tell on the podcast.
So that's going to come out Tuesday, which, uh, I think people are going to really,
really, really, really enjoy.
It'd be a good one to watch on YouTube.
That is the one to watch on YouTube. Yeah. The, the channel.
You'll get a kick out of this. Uh, you know,
I see all of our company expenses and I was
seeing all these like weird eBay charges, like $6 and 57 cents, you know, $4 and 12
cents. And the ones I was like, Oh my God, a lot of these come from DJ's card. I like
text him like DJ, did you lose your car? And I've seen a lot of, he's like, Oh no, no,
we got this podcast. I'm like, Oh cool. Cool. Cool.
We kept it under. We kept it on the rails, big. It was, it was a worthwhile expense. I promise.
Other than that, we got a live show happy hour for Bay Hill on Wednesday.
Go ahead and saddle up for that one. That'll be another fun one.
And then we're grinding to get the film room of Sally at Gasparilla out by the end of the
week as a little teaser for a little teaser before our guys appearance at the creator classic,
the following week, the week of the players, Sally's going to be playing at the creator classic.
Yours truly is going to be caddying. I'm going to be on the bag for him down there. It's going to be
really fun. I have your word cut out for you. Maybe now we're going to keep it. We is going to be caddying. I'm going to be on the bag for him down there. It's going to be really fun.

And then also check out the Calvin Pete deep dive from last week.
If you haven't, I got a fantastic turned out really, really good.
I got a ton of nice really, really good. Got a ton
of nice notes from people on that one. And, you know,
hopefully did a very heavy, very interesting, very complex
story, some justice there by KVV. So really good stuff. If
you get a chance to go listen to that one. What's going on in
the shop?
New hats. We got some new Richardson trucker hats. Hell yeah, brother.
No, some, some, uh, some new headwear. Um, got some new
row back stuff coming in. H and B's coming in soon. It's
going to be a big, big month of March in the shop. So store.no

Good being with you guys.
Great questions.
One 13.
We didn't hit our depth.
The questions were too good.
The prompts were too good.
You know, the boys got running and you know, just got away from us.
What are you, what are you getting?
Like, you don't have to listen to it all in one sitting, you know, you
can listen to it throughout the day.
Let's do it out there out the week.
It's okay.
