This is usually the point in the podcast
where we try to cleverly weave in some
partially forced chatter about whatever products
or content our friends at Callaway have in the works.
Today, we're not gonna do that. They'd like you to hear the CDC's list of steps to prevent illness
with regards to coronavirus disease 2019. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed
to the virus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person between people who are
in close contact with one another within about six feet that is.
And through respiratory droplets produce when an infected person sneezes or coughs. These droplets
can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Take
steps to protect yourself. Those include avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
and cleaning your hands often.
We mean really cleaning your hands, not the fingertips out of the water and a little flick,
flick, flick, few drops around kind of wash.
So stay at home if you're sick, cover coughs and sneezes and clean and disinfect frequently
touch surfaces daily.

This is a true emergency podcast in every sense of the word.
Well, I'd like to just real quick,
a people say it's like the word. Well, I'd like to just real quick, I, people say it's like the flu. Well, listen,
if you're young and you're healthy, it might affect you personally, like a flu would,
maybe a really bad flu. Maybe it won't affect you that much at all. The real risk is the
systemic risk to our health systems, the hospital beds, the equipment, and the elderly and the people with
preexisting conditions are at risk and hence why there is urgent need to control the spread
of the disease, which goes to the CDC statement.

The players don't want to be there.
They should just leave.
And it's everything.
No one's making a plan.

That's like fancy flu.

If fans want to go, let them make their own choice.

And their choice affects other people
because they can pick up the disease and pass it on
without even them knowing.

But if the NBA I have no idea what it's causing the NBA to shut down for this period of time.
If the NCAA, who is the scumiest of all of them, is shutting down the billion dollar March madness,
for this thing that actually makes them money.
Don't you think that there's something to be, there's something to this. Do you think everyone has it wrong?
And do you think it's just a PR play?

and we were like, what if we canceled the sport
that we're all covering
and getting paid to cover?
Like that's what we were.

People were like, hey, you guys are excited
that the players got canceled.
You wanted to cancel.
I was like, do you think anybody having fun?
Like, no, we're having fun with this.
This is a horrible week.
This is our hometown event.
Yeah.
Which, I don't think we have a structure for this podcast.

So if I may, let me press that question to you first.
Did you want to cancel as residents of Jacksonville, Florida?
After all the information that came out, yes.
Like, like outstanding question.
Do I want the players canceled?
Hell no.

I think the key word in there was do want.
Did I want it to be like, no, did I eventually get to the point
on like they need to cancel this?
Yes.
As a resident, yes.
Yeah, we have a lot of older and older people here.
It's a span, so people think it's like,
oh, well, why can't you just take the fans away?
Like explain why it's an issue bringing this people,
meaning it's pretty easy explanation.
Bringing this many people from around the world that come to this term at either play to produce, to
cover it for media or just to attend it as a fan is an issue for the local people of St.
John's County.
Well, again, it goes back to spread and what helps a disease spread is, you know, introducing
it to an area where there isn't disease or where there's
unsuspecting people.
And so you bring in a global golf tour, all the people from all over the globe, other
markets, descend on Pontavidra Beach.
And the incubation period for this disease is sometimes up to two weeks where people can
be carrying it.
They have the disease, but they're showing no symptoms. And during that two weeks, they, you know, could pass it
on. So long story short, you bring a bunch of people together into a community from, you know,
outside the community. And the chances are because of insufficient testing, I mean the reality is the disease is a lot of places the testing just hasn't caught up yet and so
It's bringing a lot of people in exposing the disease to this community where
Perhaps it takes root and spreads then and as you said the demographics around here aren't
Optimal for that. There's There's a lot of retirees.
There's a lot of people who need to come south
because of the friendlier weather.
And so yeah, getting tens of thousands of people together
just seemed like such an unnecessary risk,
especially today.
Like that's what was like, I just couldn't get past.
Like, I think the other thing is like the markets
Like I'm not to make the markets part of this but like
Song markets down like 25% in the last
Like that's not an insignificant thing either like that's like the third biggest story of the day or whatever or fourth biggest
Way of the day like any other time that would be this is like the
2008 crash or 20, was it
2007, 2007?
Yeah, but it's where it was the biggest drops in 1987.
Yeah, so it's like that's that's also going on here.
Like there's so many things and then I thought I thought it was interesting how Westwood
and a few other guys, Rory, they seem to have much more, not advanced, but just much more like
authoritative stances. Thoughtful stances, maybe just because I tend to agree with them more on
a lot of things, but yeah, just more, more like well thought, well reasoned things to say about
this, it seemed like. So I think that where I shake out on a lot of the stuff is it was yesterday Wednesday, Wednesday night was,
I don't know, one of the five weirdest days I've ever had in my whole life, I think.
And I don't know if you guys would echo that.
I would assume probably yes, but definitely the hours between 830 and 1230, especially was just,
I mean, 830 and 1230, especially was just, whoa, what a, now travels band and then,
whoa, now there's a fake NBA account going out around saying
we thought that was fake worse.
And then now there's a real NBA,
now they've canceled their whole season, now Tom Hanks has it,
now Tom Hanks' son is producing videos,
now Tom Hanks has his son, I didn't even know about that.
His son's a rapper.
He's a rapper.
It was just a complete roller coaster.
But I think we all got to the end of that.
And I think speaking very personally,
I think at least the four of us all kind of started
looking at it as like, man, as a citizen of Jacksonville.
Yeah, this is not a good idea to have all these people
come into very confined spaces. And you can talk about the acreville. Yeah, this is not a good idea to have all these people come into, you
know, very confined spaces. And you can talk about the acreage. And I'm sure we're going
to get to all this stuff. But that felt very, very, very, very off to have fans out there
on Thursday morning. That said, did I go out there on Thursday morning? For sure. And
so Neil and I were out there because more out of like morbid curiosity than anything where it's like, man, we got a
You know, we we got to talk about it in the pod. We got to like what is the what's the vibe out there?
And so we went out and I had two major takeaways
The first one was that the first probably two hours we walked nine holes the first probably hour and a half two hours we're out there
two hours, we walked nine holes. The first probably, hour and a half, two hours we were out there,
it felt like it could not have been like less of a big deal.
It felt very chill, very laid back.
You can get plenty of space if you want it.
You don't have to shake anybody's hand.
It was just very like, you know what?
Maybe this is going to be totally fine.
And then you get to 16, 17, 18, the whole numbers 16, 17, 18,
and it like, I don't want to over over blow it or sound like a panicky or whatever
But it like got legitimately kind of scary for a second because you're all of a sudden you're seeing all of these people packed
So fucking tightly together and all the people who are like there's so much acreage people can spread out
It's like yeah, but they don't they don't do that though. The stadium course for a reason and it's like I'm I'm not falling, like, we're gonna get into the tour and we're gonna get into
the decisions they made and all that stuff.
But it's like, you know, for you, you paired all the best players like together in these
featured groups.
And of course, they weren't predicting that things would go that the way that they did.
But yeah, of course, people are gonna congregate to watch Jordan and Ricky and JT play together.
Of course, they're gonna congregate in these like small corridors and small areas and
T-boxes and greens and walking around looking at that.
And then the second thing, this is kind of long-winded, but the second thing was that everybody
talks about how old the golf audience is.
And I had like that struck me so much more today than it ever has in my entire life.
And I've been going to golf tournaments for going on 10 years now, you know, in some
professional capacity.
And today it was looking around at like holy shit.
Everybody here is 75 years old and everybody like it's an exaggeration of course.
But you know, that guy's got a walker.
That guy's smoking six.
That guy has an oxygen tank. That guy has this. That guy has this.
That guy's coughing. That guy just sneezes into a shirt. That guy's got this going on. It's like
Fuck, this is a bad idea to have all these people out here together.
It felt you and Neil go and kind of I
It felt like the scene in Independence Day when the people go party on top of the building
Before the big disc is opened up and destroyed everybody.
We even even mentioned that the walk,
that walk 16, 17 is way too long.
We've been saying it's too long.
Like everybody's been saying it's too long.
Sir, it's too long.
Everybody's packed in there.
It is too long.
It's too many people along that little.
I'll tell you what else could diffuse the people,
those, if they opened up the water for boaters.
Yeah, that's true.
A lot of people are saying that.
There's more exit routes.
You could have got off the property if you needed to.
Exactly.
I think, not to focus too hard on a small percentage of, of,
not golf Twitter, I've Twitter that just wants to bypass this thing.
But I think where the last thing we need to cover as far as the actual concern around
the, the virus is understanding the concept of a precaution.
Like, like I said at the beginning, do I think that this saved the coronavirus or saved
the city of Jacksonville by canceling it?
No, but if everyone is taking precaution, the worst thing that can happen is not the worst
thing that can happen, but if it comes to the, let's say this thing dies out and the bell curve, you know, flattens out,
like everyone is hoping that it does.
These are the same people that are gonna flex on everybody
and say, you have a reactive.
You guys have a reactive, yeah.
Yeah, like maybe.
See nothing happen.
Yeah.
Like this is the reason.
This is something that this,
like the people, a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend
like works for the CDC and like months ago
was saying this is the worst thing I've ever seen.
We've ever had to deal with.
Like this is a big deal.
And it is a big deal.
I mean, again, it's not gonna necessarily kill
a lot of the people listening to you to this if you get it,
but if I get it to these, I don't want 0.2% chance
of dying from the disease.
Like I'm not, I don't wanna take that chance.
God.
So, all right, when you wanna start,
you wanna start with just laying out the week
that was in the game of golf.
That's the other, I mean, before we get there,
like the fact that we have an invention
to chain smokers' consulate.
Unbelievable.
So that's like the, that's, that was the turning point.
I think on the tour for me, it was like, holy shit,
these guys are, so I think setting the scene think setting the scene for that is living in Jacksonville and seeing the, I don't
know what the word is.
The level of dedication is what I'll phrase it as with the players' championships.
It's enthusiasm.
Sure.
It's pride and like all kinds of things.
All kinds of things.
Some would call it potentially a complex of some kind but
I think factor. I think there's a very earnest like I'm sure we're gonna say plenty of
Negative things, but I to speak very positively. I fucking love the players. It's it's just to be this year
How great is so great of course is awesome the like they've done so many legitimately awesome things with the tournament
The reason I live here.
I came to visit you and we went to the players and I was like, oh, this is cool.
I should think about moving.
I love it.
It has so many awesome things going about it.
The town, on a tour that feels increasingly impersonal and in local, non-local, I don't
know what the right term would be.
Just generic and
globalized and boring. I feel like Jacksonville has is a great city. It's where we all choose to live
and I feel like the tournament like genuinely reflects why I love the city. So I want to like
get that all up front as far as why we love the players. And honestly, it's never been more
apparent to me the value in having everyone there.
Yeah.
Tiger excluded, of course, this week.
But with all of the events we're talking about, the WGC's got not showing up.
You know, the guy's not showing up to the Honda, Bay Hill.
It's a story every year.
No, no, no, they're all going to be there at a tour of Bay.
Can you hit the conspiracy?

Like, so you brought up the, the chain smuggler's concert.
So I fucking hate the chain smugglers, of course.
It's like, I can't think of a place I would rather avoid.
But like every video, like it was packed, right?
So I think that's where you're getting there.
It's like, there's a massive enthusiasm for not only
the tournament, but all the events around the tournament.
Well, it's, I feel like year over year,
they're feeling more and more pressure
to make this event stand out, right?
Not only compared to the majors,
but just compared to other PJ tour events
are so much identity crisis with tour events
and that, you know, we have the elevated status,
memorial and Bay Hill and Genesis and then we have the WGCs
and we have the playoffs.
It's like, what is the players?
It has this like identity crisis.
And they have so many people to dedicate
and put in so much great effort honestly
to make this an awesome, awesome tournament.
It dawned on me today.
I'm like, gosh, every golf fan should come to the players
at some point because like I said,
you see all the players and it's some of the best viewing
angles, all of the hills and mounds.
They don't even have that many grandstands
because you don't need them. It's got everything to it.
So I feel like the tour feels so much pressure
to make this event blow out
that the idea of canceling it scared the hell out of them.
For sure, of course.
How we could build all of this infrastructure.
And honestly, this is complete conjecture,
but it's like, honestly, screw Valera.
We know Valera was not happening, or sorry, screw Val's bar.
It's not happening next week.
Let's just get through this week.
If we can get through this week, we'll be fine.
It kind of felt like wishful thinking almost.
Yeah.
It's like, hey, let's cross our fingers, get as far down this road, and hope that we can
steamroll through this wall.
And I'm sure there was way, way way way more thought that went into that
I'm not saying that that's the only incentive but I that had to have been a factor in some way. Can we go back to the beginning of the week?
Like let's just go even like going back to Monday that I
Could see that you know, I think it was much more of a possibility
Early this week even yeah, and that's what's crazy is how much and how quickly things have changed.
And so, yeah, let's go back. Yeah, I mean, I think the week begun or began in a kind of an
apropos way where the tour was so eager and shall I say thirsty to announce their new media deal.
The week of the players kick off the week like that, that even with all this PGL stuff kind of looming, which that's a whole
another conversation that we can devote probably four more pods to next week.
Well, we're not doing anything. I don't know if we have time.
But, you know, basically, all the markets, you know, they started shitting
themselves last week for the most part,
for really an earnest, and then futures were down
over a thousand points, and then as Monahan is coming
on the air with CNBC, they asked him maybe two questions
about the new media deal, and everything else was Corona.
Coronavirus related.
Like do you have a plan for Corona, do you have a plan?
Yeah, and just the simple act of putting him on there, putting him in that in that
situation and it was it seemed so short-sighted and just plain. It was like here's our plan.
Here's our plan. We got we're going to do it. We have you flew up here. We got to do it.
I was good. But in that almost in the Tour's defense is like, God, it's just a bad timing, man. Like, I'm sure they had that plan for a while
for Jay to appear there.
But that's one of their,
that's one of their partners.
Exactly, one in golf can be seen.
No one in golf can read the room.
NBC is a party to this massive,
you know, a couple billion dollar right steel, you know, shit, you know, couple billion dollar rights deal, you know,
shit, more than a couple billion dollar rights deal.
And they're, they're, they're, their talent was, you know,
asking, I mean, some of the questions were absolutely outrageous.
Two of the little lady was like,
no idea what they were talking about.
Yeah, and then, you know, Andrew Rossorken
starts asking about the insurance that Jay has
and you know, the, the, the, the tour has.
And it's just, and you know, I don't think he necessarily performed that poorly more than like, it was
just like a terrible instance.
And like the fact that they couldn't have seen that coming with the the the optics of
seeing, you know, minus 1000 in red right behind him.
As this interview is going on, it was just trading was halted that morning.
Circa breakers.
Because they bumped up against a circuit breaker.
Is that bad?
Do you guys want to have the dumbest quick interjection conversation?
I mean, it's unedited podcast.
So I think we have to at this point.
Some I think at our dinner at the other night, people were talking about that there should
be a circuit breaker for your golf round where if you hit, I believe it was Aiman Lynch, had a circuit
breaker for a long time that if he hit a certain amount over par, he would just walk off
the golf course.
I thought that was an idea that really resonated with me.
He thought it was like an 82 shooter.
So whenever you got like 10 over par, you would just walk off the course.
So I thought, you know, I thought that could be a useful thing.
Maybe some of us could take away from from this week, but
So that continue. So that happens on my
break to catch your breath.
But actually we played golf on Monday.
Max, he he hold out from over 150 yards landed it in the hole.
Blue out the over and that was like the ninth most interesting thing that happens.
I played golf with Kessler Karein on Tuesday
And I like totally forgot about it
He just really like randomly joined our our you know group
Winger on that first I was gonna say you got to give the people a little taste of that it was surreal
Like it was supposed Joe Max is caddy and you know Kess like, hey, you guys might have put it to like sure man
Like I'm trying from no way up. He's like, oh cool
So actually really it was just yeah, we just you know, it was like
Did you talk to him much did you a little bit? I kind of made a quip like hey, I'm watching you're in the sand
Kind of shot me a look but
and then I was like, wasted, kind of shot me a look. But yeah, a little bit, but you know, it was just,
it was just like surreal, it was like the Twilight Zone.
I forgot that it happened as well.
Yeah, so I'll get on track for a couple of whole stup,
totally cool.
That's the thing about the better,
I haven't seen Patrick Reed since the Bahamas incident
and how well we've covered that.
But for all the times we've made fun of him over the years,
like I've always been really cool with him in person.
He's like, I was like, yeah, I had to get a blast
on that line drive section.
He's like, yeah, I saw that.
That's all good.
Like he was in on it.
Like he didn't even care.
And everybody talked to his first caddies and players and stuff.
Everybody's like, yeah, like Kessler's,
Kessler's a nice guy, like, you know, like harmless.
Good player in his own right as well.
So, is he not really

no that's two days two
so yeah yeah so and the chain smugglers concert was one thing it was the tweet that
five yeah that's that's Wednesday had Had to guess, that was scheduled.
Yeah, an unfortunate schedule to eat.
But if you're managing social media for large organization,
a couple million followers on Twitter, let's say,
I'm not pointing anything at everything,
I'm just saying.

Wouldn't you look to see, all right, cool,
like situation, situation's fluid.
I think they said that about 17 times today.

In a fluid situation, I'm gonna look and see what tweets
I have scheduled.

That's an anxiety that basically drove me crazy
for about three years.
It was just, I was talking to Neil about that earlier.
It's like when I would manage social accounts,
it was like you're waiting for a global pandemic
to break out at all times,
because you're just like, fuck, I'm gonna,
I know I just wanna like go into this movie theater
and just watch this movie,
but I know someone's gonna die or something's gonna happen,
and I'm gonna have some dumb ass tweet schedule
that I've, it's gonna look really horrible.
Which can we say?
I'm never going to one of my fiance's work events ever again.
Because this is the third consecutive time
that this has happened, that I've been offline
for like an hour and a half,
and I literally opened up my phone to 100,
exactly 100 messages.
By the way, the whole NBA is K, it's a little bit.
Yes, everything's really travel band to Europe.
And nobody knew about it.
Like it just was, I don't know how this keeps happening.
But, and I think that's where we were Tuesday. It was still, you know, but this is the,
so this is the knowledge that I would have. Tuesday's even like, yeah, Tuesday, it was
like, you know, there's something going on. There was no part of me that went to bed
Tuesday being like, God, they really shouldn't have done that concert. Right. Which looking
back now, I'm like, yeah, of course, you shouldn't have, but I can't claim that I was feeling that on Tuesday.
The funny thing too, it's always a country concert.
And this is the first year that they've changed it into this,
you know, whatever EDM, whatever the hell,
like fake EDM, whatever the chain smugglers are.
How would you classify the chain smugglers, DJ?
Uh, I don't know, vapid commercial, like pop,
like pop or pop.
I like the Beatles, right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, kind of.
So I would say about Tuesday, I agree.
It's not like no one is saying you should have canceled this thing on Tuesday, but at that
time, there should have been a contingency plan.
There should have been several for like, Hey, if we have to do this,
here's what's going to happen. And it just seemed like they were making, I'm sure having meeting,
meeting, meeting hours, hours, hours, a million questions. How do we deal with this from agents
and players and the event and the charities and okay, so now we've come to this decision and it
just didn't seem to look even 12 hours into the future as to like, when they, when they decided to take
fans away starting Friday, how could they not have seen that the possible, there was
going to be a possibility they needed to cancel it?
Well, let's, let's go back, let's go back to see if we're going to, yeah, yeah, let's,
let's go back to Tuesday.
We're going to do this thing slow.
We're on the heels of the cutter or the cutter open.
Is it cutter or cutter?
I have a specific cutter.
I think it's cutter.

Anyway, the cutter open.
And the couple of the Italian guys got basically removed from the field for a time to get
tested.
And then the one guy finished like top 10.
Yeah.
And then the Euro Tord canceled, you know, the Indian
Indian open.
The the NBA was still, I think the warriors, the Golden State
warriors had made the decision to not allow fans, but they were
going to play without fans. Other teams were going ahead with
fans, which I think that was because I mean, fuck you know, so much
shit has happened over the last three days. But I think that was because I mean, fuck you know, so much shit has happened over the last three days, but I think that was because like the San Francisco mayor basically had ruled like no gatherings over a thousand people or whatever.
Yeah, exactly.
Which shout out to the PGA championship like.
And then in golf.
Yeah, so that's so that was the only thing I was going to say is in golf.
That was kind of the scuttle butt around.
So our grass on Tuesday was, hey, you know, the, uh, actually big shot, Bob, we've said it.
The original, uh, original inventor of the Mika rib. That's right. That's right.
I forgot about that. Uh, he, he had, he had tweeted something about, uh, basically using,
you know, the PJ of America leaving the grandstands up or asking to totally the grandstands up and using sawgrass as a potential venue for
The PGA championship and at that point like I you know you flip on PGA to a radio
Ketric and McGinnis they were lobbying for them to hold
both the US open and the UK British open also at
TPC Sawgrass.

Which is like, I just kind of love like,
am I dreaming this?
That's patently fucking absurd.
There's a lot of shit that happens in golf
that like, it's hard to not come off
as seemingly like I just complete, know it all.
Like if it's by saying this, you sound like a jackass in a little bit a lot of people in golf
I just don't know what the hell they're talking about we're doing and like some of the ideas we hear on a week-to-week basis
But to have the like the British open it's open
I mean, I know I suggested the
Royal greens because it's a it has a royal designation
That was a good thought.
And there's no fans in King of Dola, you know, economic city.
Yeah, but anyway, that's an aside.
So that's how it's Tuesday, right?

And so if, you know, again, in the Tours of Defense,
if you look around at the other professional sports leagues,
not that they have to do as all the others do,
but it was, you know, things are continuing on with the NBA
Spring training baseball was going on the NHL hadn't made any you know suspension of play
March madness or
It was weird
Conference tournaments. Yeah, so it's it's it's weird in that some conference tournaments were kind of being affected
But they were gonna go on without fans. So you're kind of, you know, you're reading the T-leaves.
I think that the overriding takeaway is like,

I think it dawns on people like,

it doesn't matter how much money I have,
it doesn't matter, like dog virus can find anybody,
it's gonna find anybody.
And so I hate to be this cynical,
but as a society, I think once enough people
in positions of power who have money and who can make these decisions,
once they come to that realization that I can't buy my way out of this, I can't hide from
it.
I think that's when things really start changing.
And I think that's when a lot of the tough decisions and things move quickly in that,
okay, let's push this down and out to all the people. That's just my opinion, but I think that in retrospect, seem to be a big tipping point.
It seems like everybody's come to the realization of, hey, we're going to have to do this at some
point. It's either kick the can down the road, do it in two weeks, or do it now, get ahead of it,
and then once we do, things should return to some-

That's what made Thursday's that decision so curious.

bought to dump on that golf horse and how much water that takes to get that stuff to,

in the same spot as it has, or in picking up in the same spot that it has in the past
