Hello guys, across the table, Mr. Tron Carter. Hey Sally, I wanna talk about the mud balls. I know you're ready to talk mud balls. It's the headline story from today and of course Mr. DJ Pie, welcome.
Starting point is 00:00:52 It's all your patience, thanks for having me. This is usually the point in the podcast where we try to cleverly weave in some partially forced chatter about whatever products or content our friends at Callaway have in the works. Today, we're not gonna do that. They'd like you to hear the CDC's list of steps to prevent illness with regards to coronavirus disease 2019. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person between people who are
Starting point is 00:01:22 in close contact with one another within about six feet that is. And through respiratory droplets produce when an infected person sneezes or coughs. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Take steps to protect yourself. Those include avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands and cleaning your hands often. We mean really cleaning your hands, not the fingertips out of the water and a little flick, flick, flick, few drops around kind of wash. So stay at home if you're sick, cover coughs and sneezes and clean and disinfect frequently

The players championship has been canceled. We're not, we're posting this episode unedited. There will be no further reads.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Durape the course of this. This is a true emergency podcast in every sense of the word. Well, I'd like to just real quick, a people say it's like the word. Well, I'd like to just real quick, I, people say it's like the flu. Well, listen, if you're young and you're healthy, it might affect you personally, like a flu would, maybe a really bad flu. Maybe it won't affect you that much at all. The real risk is the systemic risk to our health systems, the hospital beds, the equipment, and the elderly and the people with preexisting conditions are at risk and hence why there is urgent need to control the spread
Starting point is 00:02:52 of the disease, which goes to the CDC statement. See, I read from Jim 618-794-8 on Twitter. The players don't want to be there. They should just leave. And it's everything. No one's making a plan. No one's making a plan. No one's making a play. That's like fancy flu.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Is what it was called? If fans want to go, let them make their own choice. Well, yeah, dog, but it's like, there's something called externalities. And their choice affects other people because they can pick up the disease and pass it on without even them knowing. And so hence here we are.
Starting point is 00:03:20 The best, we have a ton, ton to cover. The best way I heard it described was We all everybody's got to do their part in this like do I think that the players championship would cause the global pandemic of the Coronavirus to the pandemic like horribly exponentially get worse no, I don't but gosh You have to think I am not an expert on this disease But if the NBA I have no idea what it's causing the NBA to shut down for this period of time. If the NCAA, who is the scumiest of all of them, is shutting down the billion dollar March madness,
Starting point is 00:03:56 for this thing that actually makes them money. Don't you think that there's something to be, there's something to this. Do you think everyone has it wrong? And do you think it's just a PR play? Right. Do you think it's a cynical? Yeah, we just don't want to get the Twitter mentions fired up. No, maybe they're trying to help society. Isn't that kind of the whole point?
Starting point is 00:04:17 I don't know, dog. I saw Roger Sherman. Yeah, yeah, all the supports media got together and we were like, what if we canceled the sport that we're all covering and getting paid to cover? Like that's what we were. More content than hands.
Starting point is 00:04:28 People were like, hey, you guys are excited that the players got canceled. You wanted to cancel. I was like, do you think anybody having fun? Like, no, we're having fun with this. This is a horrible week. This is our hometown event. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:40 Which, I don't think we have a structure for this podcast. I don't think we have an outline for this podcast. I don't know if we have an outline for this podcast. So if I may, let me press that question to you first. Did you want to cancel as residents of Jacksonville, Florida? After all the information that came out, yes. Like, like outstanding question. Do I want the players canceled? Hell no.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Of course. Of course. I think the key word in there was do want. Did I want it to be like, no, did I eventually get to the point on like they need to cancel this? Yes. As a resident, yes. Yeah, we have a lot of older and older people here.
Starting point is 00:05:14 It's a span, so people think it's like, oh, well, why can't you just take the fans away? Like explain why it's an issue bringing this people, meaning it's pretty easy explanation. Bringing this many people from around the world that come to this term at either play to produce, to cover it for media or just to attend it as a fan is an issue for the local people of St. John's County. Well, again, it goes back to spread and what helps a disease spread is, you know, introducing
Starting point is 00:05:43 it to an area where there isn't disease or where there's unsuspecting people. And so you bring in a global golf tour, all the people from all over the globe, other markets, descend on Pontavidra Beach. And the incubation period for this disease is sometimes up to two weeks where people can be carrying it. They have the disease, but they're showing no symptoms. And during that two weeks, they, you know, could pass it on. So long story short, you bring a bunch of people together into a community from, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:16 outside the community. And the chances are because of insufficient testing, I mean the reality is the disease is a lot of places the testing just hasn't caught up yet and so It's bringing a lot of people in exposing the disease to this community where Perhaps it takes root and spreads then and as you said the demographics around here aren't Optimal for that. There's There's a lot of retirees. There's a lot of people who need to come south because of the friendlier weather. And so yeah, getting tens of thousands of people together just seemed like such an unnecessary risk,
Starting point is 00:06:59 especially today. Like that's what was like, I just couldn't get past. Like, I think the other thing is like the markets Like I'm not to make the markets part of this but like Song markets down like 25% in the last Like that's not an insignificant thing either like that's like the third biggest story of the day or whatever or fourth biggest Way of the day like any other time that would be this is like the 2008 crash or 20, was it
Starting point is 00:07:27 2007, 2007? Yeah, but it's where it was the biggest drops in 1987. Yeah, so it's like that's that's also going on here. Like there's so many things and then I thought I thought it was interesting how Westwood and a few other guys, Rory, they seem to have much more, not advanced, but just much more like authoritative stances. Thoughtful stances, maybe just because I tend to agree with them more on a lot of things, but yeah, just more, more like well thought, well reasoned things to say about this, it seemed like. So I think that where I shake out on a lot of the stuff is it was yesterday Wednesday, Wednesday night was,
Starting point is 00:08:11 I don't know, one of the five weirdest days I've ever had in my whole life, I think. And I don't know if you guys would echo that. I would assume probably yes, but definitely the hours between 830 and 1230, especially was just, I mean, 830 and 1230, especially was just, whoa, what a, now travels band and then, whoa, now there's a fake NBA account going out around saying we thought that was fake worse. And then now there's a real NBA, now they've canceled their whole season, now Tom Hanks has it,
Starting point is 00:08:38 now Tom Hanks' son is producing videos, now Tom Hanks has his son, I didn't even know about that. His son's a rapper. He's a rapper. It was just a complete roller coaster. But I think we all got to the end of that. And I think speaking very personally, I think at least the four of us all kind of started
Starting point is 00:08:56 looking at it as like, man, as a citizen of Jacksonville. Yeah, this is not a good idea to have all these people come into very confined spaces. And you can talk about the acreville. Yeah, this is not a good idea to have all these people come into, you know, very confined spaces. And you can talk about the acreage. And I'm sure we're going to get to all this stuff. But that felt very, very, very, very off to have fans out there on Thursday morning. That said, did I go out there on Thursday morning? For sure. And so Neil and I were out there because more out of like morbid curiosity than anything where it's like, man, we got a You know, we we got to talk about it in the pod. We got to like what is the what's the vibe out there?
Starting point is 00:09:32 And so we went out and I had two major takeaways The first one was that the first probably two hours we walked nine holes the first probably hour and a half two hours we're out there two hours, we walked nine holes. The first probably, hour and a half, two hours we were out there, it felt like it could not have been like less of a big deal. It felt very chill, very laid back. You can get plenty of space if you want it. You don't have to shake anybody's hand. It was just very like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:09:56 Maybe this is going to be totally fine. And then you get to 16, 17, 18, the whole numbers 16, 17, 18, and it like, I don't want to over over blow it or sound like a panicky or whatever But it like got legitimately kind of scary for a second because you're all of a sudden you're seeing all of these people packed So fucking tightly together and all the people who are like there's so much acreage people can spread out It's like yeah, but they don't they don't do that though. The stadium course for a reason and it's like I'm I'm not falling, like, we're gonna get into the tour and we're gonna get into the decisions they made and all that stuff. But it's like, you know, for you, you paired all the best players like together in these
Starting point is 00:10:34 featured groups. And of course, they weren't predicting that things would go that the way that they did. But yeah, of course, people are gonna congregate to watch Jordan and Ricky and JT play together. Of course, they're gonna congregate in these like small corridors and small areas and T-boxes and greens and walking around looking at that. And then the second thing, this is kind of long-winded, but the second thing was that everybody talks about how old the golf audience is. And I had like that struck me so much more today than it ever has in my entire life.
Starting point is 00:11:05 And I've been going to golf tournaments for going on 10 years now, you know, in some professional capacity. And today it was looking around at like holy shit. Everybody here is 75 years old and everybody like it's an exaggeration of course. But you know, that guy's got a walker. That guy's smoking six. That guy has an oxygen tank. That guy has this. That guy has this. That guy's coughing. That guy just sneezes into a shirt. That guy's got this going on. It's like
Starting point is 00:11:31 Fuck, this is a bad idea to have all these people out here together. It felt you and Neil go and kind of I It felt like the scene in Independence Day when the people go party on top of the building Before the big disc is opened up and destroyed everybody. We even even mentioned that the walk, that walk 16, 17 is way too long. We've been saying it's too long. Like everybody's been saying it's too long.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Sir, it's too long. Everybody's packed in there. It is too long. It's too many people along that little. I'll tell you what else could diffuse the people, those, if they opened up the water for boaters. Yeah, that's true. A lot of people are saying that.
Starting point is 00:12:04 There's more exit routes. You could have got off the property if you needed to. Exactly. I think, not to focus too hard on a small percentage of, of, not golf Twitter, I've Twitter that just wants to bypass this thing. But I think where the last thing we need to cover as far as the actual concern around the, the virus is understanding the concept of a precaution. Like, like I said at the beginning, do I think that this saved the coronavirus or saved
Starting point is 00:12:31 the city of Jacksonville by canceling it? No, but if everyone is taking precaution, the worst thing that can happen is not the worst thing that can happen, but if it comes to the, let's say this thing dies out and the bell curve, you know, flattens out, like everyone is hoping that it does. These are the same people that are gonna flex on everybody and say, you have a reactive. You guys have a reactive, yeah. Yeah, like maybe.
Starting point is 00:12:54 See nothing happen. Yeah. Like this is the reason. This is something that this, like the people, a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend like works for the CDC and like months ago was saying this is the worst thing I've ever seen. We've ever had to deal with.
Starting point is 00:13:07 Like this is a big deal. And it is a big deal. I mean, again, it's not gonna necessarily kill a lot of the people listening to you to this if you get it, but if I get it to these, I don't want 0.2% chance of dying from the disease. Like I'm not, I don't wanna take that chance. God.
Starting point is 00:13:22 So, all right, when you wanna start, you wanna start with just laying out the week that was in the game of golf. That's the other, I mean, before we get there, like the fact that we have an invention to chain smokers' consulate. Unbelievable. So that's like the, that's, that was the turning point.
Starting point is 00:13:39 I think on the tour for me, it was like, holy shit, these guys are, so I think setting the scene think setting the scene for that is living in Jacksonville and seeing the, I don't know what the word is. The level of dedication is what I'll phrase it as with the players' championships. It's enthusiasm. Sure. It's pride and like all kinds of things. All kinds of things.
Starting point is 00:14:03 Some would call it potentially a complex of some kind but I think factor. I think there's a very earnest like I'm sure we're gonna say plenty of Negative things, but I to speak very positively. I fucking love the players. It's it's just to be this year How great is so great of course is awesome the like they've done so many legitimately awesome things with the tournament The reason I live here. I came to visit you and we went to the players and I was like, oh, this is cool. I should think about moving. I love it.
Starting point is 00:14:30 It has so many awesome things going about it. The town, on a tour that feels increasingly impersonal and in local, non-local, I don't know what the right term would be. Just generic and globalized and boring. I feel like Jacksonville has is a great city. It's where we all choose to live and I feel like the tournament like genuinely reflects why I love the city. So I want to like get that all up front as far as why we love the players. And honestly, it's never been more apparent to me the value in having everyone there.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Yeah. Tiger excluded, of course, this week. But with all of the events we're talking about, the WGC's got not showing up. You know, the guy's not showing up to the Honda, Bay Hill. It's a story every year. No, no, no, they're all going to be there at a tour of Bay. Can you hit the conspiracy? I don't know what's wrong.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Oh, what's wrong with the button? Oh, no, a conspiracy button. No, it's the other, it's the other, oh, yeah, that's not right. Okay. Did the cat put himself in self-quarantine before the week? Hmm. I don't know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:37 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Anyways, I don't know why I was praising it. Like, so you brought up the, the chain smuggler's concert. So I fucking hate the chain smugglers, of course. It's like, I can't think of a place I would rather avoid. But like every video, like it was packed, right?
Starting point is 00:15:57 So I think that's where you're getting there. It's like, there's a massive enthusiasm for not only the tournament, but all the events around the tournament. Well, it's, I feel like year over year, they're feeling more and more pressure to make this event stand out, right? Not only compared to the majors, but just compared to other PJ tour events
Starting point is 00:16:14 are so much identity crisis with tour events and that, you know, we have the elevated status, memorial and Bay Hill and Genesis and then we have the WGCs and we have the playoffs. It's like, what is the players? It has this like identity crisis. And they have so many people to dedicate and put in so much great effort honestly
Starting point is 00:16:31 to make this an awesome, awesome tournament. It dawned on me today. I'm like, gosh, every golf fan should come to the players at some point because like I said, you see all the players and it's some of the best viewing angles, all of the hills and mounds. They don't even have that many grandstands because you don't need them. It's got everything to it.
Starting point is 00:16:46 So I feel like the tour feels so much pressure to make this event blow out that the idea of canceling it scared the hell out of them. For sure, of course. How we could build all of this infrastructure. And honestly, this is complete conjecture, but it's like, honestly, screw Valera. We know Valera was not happening, or sorry, screw Val's bar.
Starting point is 00:17:06 It's not happening next week. Let's just get through this week. If we can get through this week, we'll be fine. It kind of felt like wishful thinking almost. Yeah. It's like, hey, let's cross our fingers, get as far down this road, and hope that we can steamroll through this wall. And I'm sure there was way, way way way more thought that went into that
Starting point is 00:17:25 I'm not saying that that's the only incentive but I that had to have been a factor in some way. Can we go back to the beginning of the week? Like let's just go even like going back to Monday that I Could see that you know, I think it was much more of a possibility Early this week even yeah, and that's what's crazy is how much and how quickly things have changed. And so, yeah, let's go back. Yeah, I mean, I think the week begun or began in a kind of an apropos way where the tour was so eager and shall I say thirsty to announce their new media deal. The week of the players kick off the week like that, that even with all this PGL stuff kind of looming, which that's a whole another conversation that we can devote probably four more pods to next week.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Well, we're not doing anything. I don't know if we have time. But, you know, basically, all the markets, you know, they started shitting themselves last week for the most part, for really an earnest, and then futures were down over a thousand points, and then as Monahan is coming on the air with CNBC, they asked him maybe two questions about the new media deal, and everything else was Corona. Coronavirus related.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Like do you have a plan for Corona, do you have a plan? Yeah, and just the simple act of putting him on there, putting him in that in that situation and it was it seemed so short-sighted and just plain. It was like here's our plan. Here's our plan. We got we're going to do it. We have you flew up here. We got to do it. I was good. But in that almost in the Tour's defense is like, God, it's just a bad timing, man. Like, I'm sure they had that plan for a while for Jay to appear there. But that's one of their, that's one of their partners.
Starting point is 00:19:15 Exactly, one in golf can be seen. No one in golf can read the room. NBC is a party to this massive, you know, a couple billion dollar right steel, you know, shit, you know, couple billion dollar rights deal, you know, shit, more than a couple billion dollar rights deal. And they're, they're, they're, their talent was, you know, asking, I mean, some of the questions were absolutely outrageous. Two of the little lady was like,
Starting point is 00:19:37 no idea what they were talking about. Yeah, and then, you know, Andrew Rossorken starts asking about the insurance that Jay has and you know, the, the, the, the tour has. And it's just, and you know, I don't think he necessarily performed that poorly more than like, it was just like a terrible instance. And like the fact that they couldn't have seen that coming with the the the optics of seeing, you know, minus 1000 in red right behind him.
Starting point is 00:20:01 As this interview is going on, it was just trading was halted that morning. Circa breakers. Because they bumped up against a circuit breaker. Is that bad? Do you guys want to have the dumbest quick interjection conversation? I mean, it's unedited podcast. So I think we have to at this point. Some I think at our dinner at the other night, people were talking about that there should
Starting point is 00:20:23 be a circuit breaker for your golf round where if you hit, I believe it was Aiman Lynch, had a circuit breaker for a long time that if he hit a certain amount over par, he would just walk off the golf course. I thought that was an idea that really resonated with me. He thought it was like an 82 shooter. So whenever you got like 10 over par, you would just walk off the course. So I thought, you know, I thought that could be a useful thing. Maybe some of us could take away from from this week, but
Starting point is 00:20:46 So that continue. So that happens on my break to catch your breath. But actually we played golf on Monday. Max, he he hold out from over 150 yards landed it in the hole. Blue out the over and that was like the ninth most interesting thing that happens. I played golf with Kessler Karein on Tuesday And I like totally forgot about it He just really like randomly joined our our you know group
Starting point is 00:21:15 Winger on that first I was gonna say you got to give the people a little taste of that it was surreal Like it was supposed Joe Max is caddy and you know Kess like, hey, you guys might have put it to like sure man Like I'm trying from no way up. He's like, oh cool So actually really it was just yeah, we just you know, it was like Did you talk to him much did you a little bit? I kind of made a quip like hey, I'm watching you're in the sand Kind of shot me a look but and then I was like, wasted, kind of shot me a look. But yeah, a little bit, but you know, it was just, it was just like surreal, it was like the Twilight Zone.
Starting point is 00:21:51 I forgot that it happened as well. Yeah, so I'll get on track for a couple of whole stup, totally cool. That's the thing about the better, I haven't seen Patrick Reed since the Bahamas incident and how well we've covered that. But for all the times we've made fun of him over the years, like I've always been really cool with him in person.
Starting point is 00:22:07 He's like, I was like, yeah, I had to get a blast on that line drive section. He's like, yeah, I saw that. That's all good. Like he was in on it. Like he didn't even care. And everybody talked to his first caddies and players and stuff. Everybody's like, yeah, like Kessler's,
Starting point is 00:22:20 Kessler's a nice guy, like, you know, like harmless. Good player in his own right as well. So, is he not really just do this we said so that's Monday so we're yeah that's chain smoker night though that's two no that's two days two so yeah yeah so and the chain smugglers concert was one thing it was the tweet that five yeah that's that's Wednesday had Had to guess, that was scheduled.
Starting point is 00:22:46 Yeah, an unfortunate schedule to eat. But if you're managing social media for large organization, a couple million followers on Twitter, let's say, I'm not pointing anything at everything, I'm just saying. Hypothetically. Yeah, hypothetically. Wouldn't you look to see, all right, cool,
Starting point is 00:23:01 like situation, situation's fluid. I think they said that about 17 times today. Situations very fluid. In a fluid situation, I'm gonna look and see what tweets I have scheduled. Yes. Well, yes, for sure. Especially when I have a team of about 60, man.
Starting point is 00:23:17 That's an anxiety that basically drove me crazy for about three years. It was just, I was talking to Neil about that earlier. It's like when I would manage social accounts, it was like you're waiting for a global pandemic to break out at all times, because you're just like, fuck, I'm gonna, I know I just wanna like go into this movie theater
Starting point is 00:23:33 and just watch this movie, but I know someone's gonna die or something's gonna happen, and I'm gonna have some dumb ass tweet schedule that I've, it's gonna look really horrible. Which can we say? I'm never going to one of my fiance's work events ever again. Because this is the third consecutive time that this has happened, that I've been offline
Starting point is 00:23:49 for like an hour and a half, and I literally opened up my phone to 100, exactly 100 messages. By the way, the whole NBA is K, it's a little bit. Yes, everything's really travel band to Europe. And nobody knew about it. Like it just was, I don't know how this keeps happening. But, and I think that's where we were Tuesday. It was still, you know, but this is the,
Starting point is 00:24:09 so this is the knowledge that I would have. Tuesday's even like, yeah, Tuesday, it was like, you know, there's something going on. There was no part of me that went to bed Tuesday being like, God, they really shouldn't have done that concert. Right. Which looking back now, I'm like, yeah, of course, you shouldn't have, but I can't claim that I was feeling that on Tuesday. The funny thing too, it's always a country concert. And this is the first year that they've changed it into this, you know, whatever EDM, whatever the hell, like fake EDM, whatever the chain smugglers are.
Starting point is 00:24:38 How would you classify the chain smugglers, DJ? Uh, I don't know, vapid commercial, like pop, like pop or pop. I like the Beatles, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, kind of. So I would say about Tuesday, I agree. It's not like no one is saying you should have canceled this thing on Tuesday, but at that time, there should have been a contingency plan.
Starting point is 00:25:02 There should have been several for like, Hey, if we have to do this, here's what's going to happen. And it just seemed like they were making, I'm sure having meeting, meeting, meeting hours, hours, hours, a million questions. How do we deal with this from agents and players and the event and the charities and okay, so now we've come to this decision and it just didn't seem to look even 12 hours into the future as to like, when they, when they decided to take fans away starting Friday, how could they not have seen that the possible, there was going to be a possibility they needed to cancel it? Well, let's, let's go back, let's go back to see if we're going to, yeah, yeah, let's,
Starting point is 00:25:37 let's go back to Tuesday. We're going to do this thing slow. We're on the heels of the cutter or the cutter open. Is it cutter or cutter? I have a specific cutter. I think it's cutter. I think it's cutter too. Anyway, the cutter open.
Starting point is 00:25:52 And the couple of the Italian guys got basically removed from the field for a time to get tested. And then the one guy finished like top 10. Yeah. And then the Euro Tord canceled, you know, the Indian Indian open. The the NBA was still, I think the warriors, the Golden State warriors had made the decision to not allow fans, but they were
Starting point is 00:26:16 going to play without fans. Other teams were going ahead with fans, which I think that was because I mean, fuck you know, so much shit has happened over the last three days. But I think that was because I mean, fuck you know, so much shit has happened over the last three days, but I think that was because like the San Francisco mayor basically had ruled like no gatherings over a thousand people or whatever. Yeah, exactly. Which shout out to the PGA championship like. And then in golf. Yeah, so that's so that was the only thing I was going to say is in golf. That was kind of the scuttle butt around.
Starting point is 00:26:41 So our grass on Tuesday was, hey, you know, the, uh, actually big shot, Bob, we've said it. The original, uh, original inventor of the Mika rib. That's right. That's right. I forgot about that. Uh, he, he had, he had tweeted something about, uh, basically using, you know, the PJ of America leaving the grandstands up or asking to totally the grandstands up and using sawgrass as a potential venue for The PGA championship and at that point like I you know you flip on PGA to a radio Ketric and McGinnis they were lobbying for them to hold both the US open and the UK British open also at TPC Sawgrass.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Presented by the president. Which is like, I just kind of love like, am I dreaming this? That's patently fucking absurd. There's a lot of shit that happens in golf that like, it's hard to not come off as seemingly like I just complete, know it all. And so if, you know, again, in the Tours of Defense, if you look around at the other professional sports leagues, not that they have to do as all the others do, but it was, you know, things are continuing on with the NBA Spring training baseball was going on the NHL hadn't made any you know suspension of play March madness or It was weird
Starting point is 00:28:36 Conference tournaments. Yeah, so it's it's it's weird in that some conference tournaments were kind of being affected But they were gonna go on without fans. So you're kind of, you know, you're reading the T-leaves. I think that the overriding takeaway is like, yeah, we shouldn't put a lot of people together in like these close proximity's. And so during all of this, and I think this is my big takeaway is you have these massive,
Starting point is 00:39:21 important, you know, from the presidents remarks, the travel bands, the urge to take precautions. Another major global league has suspended its season where you're conducting a tournament has just reported a case of confirmed coronavirus. The tour just like nothing. No, no, no, we're having a press conference at noon just to address the situation. I think they almost got pressured into releasing a statement last night,
Starting point is 00:39:47 which came after midnight. Yeah, that was like, yeah, we're just gonna go on as just normal. It was normal. 12, 17 came out. Fans, come on in. It said, the only real news from it was, you can get a refund if you want,
Starting point is 00:39:58 and we'll have another update for you tomorrow. Correct. Yeah, so outdoors are open and people can come and go, is it pleased to. I know it like, I know that there's, there's differences here, but it's wild to see how one handled. The tour doesn't say anything. Starting point is 00:44:26 We're talking about a global health crisis like we're not we're not exaggerating that we can't be afraid of turning people away at the door for that Whatever that reaction would be in for that reason. You know what I mean? I get are we can like it just making every every decision they made was like it was it was filling one, like one crack in the canoe. And then the water pressure was just going to the other crack. And then they put some flex seal on that one. And then no matter what was gonna happen,

Starting point is 00:45:19 event Friday, Saturday, Sunday, it makes having fans out there Thursday. Like, just do that all four days in. Right. If you're that intent on having the event and everything, but just do that all four days, otherwise, it feels so unnecessary to do it to announce it at noon and be like, yeah, you know what,
Starting point is 00:45:34 everybody's walking around out there, but you know what, tomorrow we're not gonna have fans here. It's like, no, just like, all right, cool. Like all the fans got a freaking leave today. We're gonna keep playing, but you know, I don't know how that would work operationally, but as a press conference, you could even even come at you could come after the press Yeah, you come Thursday afternoon
Starting point is 00:45:49 It just made the tour seem and I I know that they this isn't reality like I know they had people Monitoring and working on it, but it From an outside perspective it just made them seem so unprepared, like in reactionary. Like it just caught them off guard. And I honestly just think they wanted to get this in that badly. I thought they could sneak this through this last week. Let's keep our head down. We can get through it.
Starting point is 00:46:16 We're gonna get through it. And then, you know, hopefully it should pops off next week. And, you know, we'll cancel the events then. There were reports as early as 1030 that they were going to, which means that the decision was probably made early like at 9 a.m. this morning that, hey, we're not going to have fans tomorrow. Which it's like 12 hours early, they would have had all the information. Right.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Same with the cancellation though. That's what that's what's crazy about saying at noon, hey, no more fans before the day ended, the play was done. There's no more play. That's a short period, I could turn around. And I said that when they made that measure, was like, all right, now we get to see
Starting point is 00:47:01 if they're willing to ride this all the way in the ground. Like I honestly couldn't, I thought it was gonna go maybe one more day. And the PJ like they had the fortune of being able to see all that and yet they still went with these little baby steps which seemed to be the tour. The tour pushed out a bunch of talking points to golf channel, basically defending their position, relying upon the acreage and all of that. tour was one of the things mine and said in the press conference was that, you know, the fact that it's an outdoor sport and it's spread out over 400
Starting point is 00:47:59 acres is what is the reason why that sport is still going while almost every other one is basically push that out to golf channel and get them to have their back a little bit toward media officials are basically on the golf channel set at this point midday as they're making their live hit like listening and watching intently basically staring in the eye trying to intimidate them and not saying anything critical. Which shout out to Aaron Oberholzer sounded like he was, you know, kind of saying, I think what everybody was thinking as a player. Yeah, it makes me very nervous. And that's all I can ask.
Starting point is 00:48:37 When do you think it truly, like, when do you think they truly lost it? Like the Westwood, like the Westwood tweet seemed very important. I mean, when the CT pan withdrew CT pan, they helped like while they're playing today, the LPGA post ponings, I can't say I don't know what the official word was. Three events and the most poned three events all in CAA championships, including the golf ones was like, okay, now we don't have acreage and you know outdoor sport to lean on here because the other sports with a crutch in That are also outdoor have also canceled. So we are on an island now aside from WWE
Starting point is 00:49:15 I think premier league has of now has not canceled and they just came out a couple hours ago Our small manager has corona virus Seriously, I'm just cancel the Australian Grand Prix. Like everything with golf, they're like, we're just behind. Whatever, like golf, golf's typically three to five years behind, media wise and all this stuff.
Starting point is 00:49:36 There's in this instance, golf was like 20% behind, like normal. Yeah. It's tough. I mean, except for, except for, I think Mike Wong, I was just gonna say for, except for, I, you know, I think Mike Wong, I was just going to say, you want to give it a shot. It's like one is maybe one thing, but like the PJ tour was behind. It seemed like Mike
Starting point is 00:49:53 Wong was, I thought his boaters was great. And I'm, I'm paraphrasing. And I think Bethan Nichols, uh, friend of the pod did a, uh, a nice right up about it. Uh, not nice, but you know what I mean, a thorough write up about it. And I think Juan's coat was basically, yeah, we probably could have played Phoenix, we maybe could have played Carl's Bad, if you really like pushed me, but there's a chance I could be wrong,
Starting point is 00:50:17 and if I'm wrong, how would I not, how would I not think about that for the rest of my life if I'm wrong about this? And that's where it comes down to is, I know this sounds overblown, and if you're someone who thinks that this is a big scam and a big like overreaction, then you're probably,
Starting point is 00:50:33 you've probably tuned out, you've probably tuned out by your phone out the window, but I don't know how you cannot extrapolate this out to the next logical outcome, which is, yeah, people go and the virus spreads and then multiple people die.
Starting point is 00:50:50 Like, do you really, is it worth having the golf tournament? Like, I know there's a lot of financial interests involved, but it's also tough. It comes down, like, there you go. There's, there's your, that's why you make a lot of money to make that decision. Like, how many people, you know, need to pay, possibly potentially die
Starting point is 00:51:06 before this becomes like a real situation? And it's like, hopefully the answer is. That's the thing is making a very, very, very, very small number. Making a decision. Yeah. That's what it comes down to. The tour, it seemed like, didn't,

There is now a pattern of this where the tour will not make a solid firm tough decision. And so it's left to in the Patrick Reed instance, you know, it's left to fester in the public. Starting point is 00:51:48 Oh. But it's the same thing here. Like, you know, it just comes back to it looks like fair or not is nobody in the leadership to see sweet at the tour will make that tough decision. I don't know about you guys, it honestly hasn't really dawned on me until somewhat recently,
Starting point is 00:52:07 but the fact that all this happened so quickly with all of these cancellations without anything significant changing with the actual virus, in my opinion, like scares the shit out of me. Like what is not being told to the public that potentially like, I think a lot of it's out there, I think like what are people not reading
Starting point is 00:52:28 or what are people not believing? No, but like something may have changed this week that like no, no, no, we are now got an idea. I'm making this part up in my head, but like now we've got an idea of how people have this. You know what I think was a great idea? We cannot be gathering and not a general public

Should I be able to go to a golf course with just not hosting a tournament?
Starting point is 00:53:05 Are golf courses gonna stay open? Or that's, I don't know. Like, this is not a normal human thing to freak out like this to panic and it's costing the world. The world economy is suffering from it and I think people have reason to be scared. Let me say this and I'm gonna tread lightly because it's not, you know,
Starting point is 00:53:26 we don't need to go certain places. But when you saw people in government last week, beginning to self-quarantine because of the risk of, you know, either exposure or having the virus, I think it dawns on people like, oh, like this, it doesn't matter where I work, it doesn't matter how much money I have, it doesn't matter, like dog virus can find anybody, it's gonna find anybody. And so I hate to be this cynical,
Starting point is 00:53:58 but as a society, I think once enough people in positions of power who have money and who can make these decisions, once they come to that realization that I can't buy my way out of this, I can't hide from it. I think that's when things really start changing. And I think that's when a lot of the tough decisions and things move quickly in that, okay, let's push this down and out to all the people. That's just my opinion, but I think that in retrospect, seem to be a big tipping point. It seems like everybody's come to the realization of, hey, we're going to have to do this at some
Starting point is 00:54:34 point. It's either kick the can down the road, do it in two weeks, or do it now, get ahead of it, and then once we do, things should return to some- That's one of those of normal, right? That's what made Thursday's that decision so curious. This is not one night of games like an NBA. This is like we are committing to a four round tournament. And also like everyone else is not playing. Like we're gonna be the only people still playing.
Starting point is 00:55:01 Why are we starting this tournament then? Why start? With the knowledge that things are gonna keep, like this thing is just gaining momentum, things are going to keep escalating like that through the four round tournament. Yeah, with the knowledge of like what, I mean that was the biggest thing going, I know it's a mega echo chamber and it's a small sample size, but like the, how many different times do you see that the Vox article and the, there's another medium article that was going around Twitter and stuff on just the, how these like exponential spreads work.
Starting point is 00:55:29 And basically like one day is potentially like a 40% change and how, how quickly this thing goes. And it's like, man, days and hours and all this stuff, like matters so much, it matters so much to just like one day difference is such a big thing. Which why wouldn't I just like, I never thought of this, why wouldn't they just postpone the tournament to start on Friday, like by yourself the time?
Starting point is 00:55:53 How often does that happen? How many rounds get rained out of PGA tour? It's because they didn't take it seriously. Or I think if you shot him with true serum, it was, they knew by that time it was like, they were just trying to get it in like I don't know I have to believe they They never thought they were gonna get all four rounds in See I think the opposite I feel ashamed into I feel like they were it was just like pure pure like they just wishful thinking
Starting point is 00:56:21 We got a question. I mean either way it's damning right AK Rosenberg Do you feel the tour thinks they did the right thing or the tour feels they did what was expected of them to me? There's a big difference he says Absolutely the latter. I think that's what we yeah, I think that's exactly what we're saying is I think it was very reactionary. Yeah, and then for me it's it's just as much about how they did it It is what they did. The whole thing just felt so ham-fisted and emblematic of a lot of the other stuff they do.
Starting point is 00:56:52 If I'm Jay Monahan as well, I don't lead in the very early part of that press conference saying that you spoke with Donald Trump about the virus and that that was gonna help in the lead to your decision. I just don't think that, I don't know what that was, if I was supposed to ease people's minds over. I don't I don't know what I just would not have led with that. So this hasn't used the market's mind. So
Starting point is 00:57:14 which I don't you know one we got a question from at Chan Price can you hop off the tours nuts now which I I don't really think I kind of thought we were going the other way on this one. I'm not my biggie did it and not check the mentions. I want to use that point to be like, we don't, this, none of this is for sport for us. Like we don't enjoy being critical of the tour. It's like we,
Starting point is 00:57:37 to be about only fair, my tweet this morning said, sometimes I do bang on the tour for sport, which I do. It's full disclosure. You're sometimes invited. But I think the tour was legitimately spooked too, that stuff rumors kept leaking out about Augusta and what they were gonna do and potentially announcing
Starting point is 00:57:58 no fans for a month ahead of time for Augusta. And can you imagine if Augusta announced that, say tomorrow, Friday of the players, while there's a bunch of fans out there, like how bad that would have made the tour look? Which is there something that I've heard some, I don't know how well-founded rumors that there was going to be a statement from Augusta tomorrow. Could that be a reason why the tour is making this happen tonight late night Thursday? And I've heard September, October postponed the masters until then like all options are on the table. But yeah, and like we even even got into the golf implications of this. We've just talked about
Starting point is 00:58:37 we should get into that. That's the yeah, that's the thing. Like, you know, I mean from from the perspective of first like they didn't even finish today Which is how that works It's a little high-speed stuff And they I'd say yes That happened and then you know like with with all right cool like What 15% of the schedule is post-pollender canceled now like it's not like they can make these tournament There's not free weeks to make these tournaments up The guys that are low on the you know, they got their status via corn fairy tour last year
Starting point is 00:59:10 are going to get absolutely boned because strength of field is going to be better. I'm sure the rest of the year because there's less tournaments. I know you're not, but I hope that there's no casting of any blame on any of this stuff. No's purely just like. This is just repercussions. Like just like externalities like you said. It's like. It's a rubbery green. I, I, I, going back to decision making the tour, all that stuff, I don't think they're,
Starting point is 00:59:36 I think they definitely could have handled it better. Of course, I don't think there was anything they could have done this week that we'd all been like, oh God, yeah, killed it, crushed it, amazing. Like they had to choose between a bunch of bad options for all of this. I'd push back a little on that, where I had, like we said, Mike Wann.
Starting point is 00:59:54 Like if he comes out Tuesday and with Mike Wann's comment, I think it's like, you know what, it sucks, I don't like it. But I think we were admitting, we're admitting though that nobody was thinking that way Tuesday. Yeah. You know what I mean? It's like, it would have been hard to predict
Starting point is 01:00:13 all this stuff happening. I still think Wednesday night. Oh, so I was gonna say, Wednesday night, yeah, I don't be girls and for anything except for the chain smokers. But it's, and the, whatever happens, happens sweet, and then, you know, the Monday, but I think the CMBC hit on Monday

Starting point is 01:00:39 an hour, hour and a half before they cancel this thing, they sent a, they were calling players and, hey, your wives and families can Can walk inside the ropes with you Tomorrow and they went from that to can't yeah, and that's bothered me too It's like did anybody really think they were gonna play these tournaments the next three four weeks like just without fans Like when you think about no exactly When you think about what happens when one NBA player gets it right Right. Like, yo, shut it all down because everybody shares everything
Starting point is 01:01:06 and everybody knows. All the people around, even with no fans, all the people around the golf tournament. Somebody tweeds like, oh, just stay away from your playing partner. It's like, well, yeah, I don't think that's in the locker room in the shot. And the guy that cleans your ball and the airplane.
Starting point is 01:01:18 Think about all the caddies. Scorecard. Think about all the caddies touching the flags they can touch in the spot. Oh no. There's dirty caddies. Slow caddies. The other Justin Johnson brought it up clean shit, basically unsolicited in his post-round hit. It was like, yo, like, I got so many mud balls today. Like, I can't really figure it out. Starting point is 01:02:03 And it's like, yeah, dude, they've had the fucking sprinklers on for four months. And then I guess the headed agent meeting earlier this week. And I guess that was their big messaging there was, hey, the master's owns green. We want to own gold. That was their thing. It's like, all right, cool.
Starting point is 01:02:22 So what color gold is? What's that mean? Semi-adormant from Utah. That's gold. Well, I was out there in the practice round Tuesday and I we had just played with max on Monday and we played in the fairway like clean it like whatever. They were little wet because it rained Sunday night. They got unexpected rain Sunday night. Sunday night Monday morning. Yes. Yeah. And then it was it was totally fine by the end of that round super sunny and windy. Yes Tuesday and we watched Max put on one of the great ball striking displays I've ever really seen I just never seems to be pin high fat part of the green He essentially tied the coursework with the double bogey correct
Starting point is 01:02:56 So I go out Tuesday and I'm watching you know walking up to you guys watching golf and watching guys hit shots in the fairway I watched Andrew Putnam lose a ball right on two from the fairway. And he was like, oh, yeah. Now, he just hit it way right out to give me another ball. Didn't get upset. And I was asking him, I was like, I was like, what are you trying to do there?
Starting point is 01:03:14 I try to hit, I was like, oh, it was just like, it's a mud ball. You can't do anything about that. I mean, it went out of bounds. It was like, yeah, it was just a mud ball. But it was being dead serious. And Max goes to hit a shot, same hole, his third shot into the green. And it goes, how many times Max goes to hit a shot. Same hole. His third shot
Starting point is 01:03:25 into the green and it goes how many times we just watch him does not miss short side. It just balls starts left immediately and like nose dives out of the air and goes left. And I know there's a contention of people out there that'll say, oh, everyone's got to play it. Bala, blah. But that stops being a golf. Yeah, it stops being a golf competition when golf balls are doing that. There's no talent in judging your mud balls. There's none. I think there might be a worldwide shortage of ryegrass seed because of how much they bought to dump on that golf horse and how much water that takes to get that stuff to,
Starting point is 01:03:59 like I heard rumors this week that they, or not rumors like this is absolutely true. They, people weren't driving like the shuttle to the back end of the range, wasn't driving in the same spot as it has, or in picking up in the same spot that it has in the past because they didn't want to put tires like tracks, like golf cart tracks in the grass because it was going to look bad on TV. That's all vein. I will say it looks pretty good out there. Which is great, baby. It looks pretty good.
Starting point is 01:04:28 It looks pretty good then. Just great, baby. It looks pretty good. But that's kind of the thing. There's so much more concern with how it looks than how it plays. Yes, agreed. And then, you know, and heard too that, you know,
Starting point is 01:04:39 several players, like Monahan said, he was blown away at how much positive feedback he got after Bay Hill. Just, man, that was such a good tournament. Like, it was fascinating to watch that and all that. And he was legitimately shocked. Like, yeah, man, like people like watching firm golf and like guys have to actually sack up and hit a shot.
Starting point is 01:05:02 Proper golf is something I say. Anything else from the tournament that we need? Well, it's gonna sound like how much you guys wanna talk about the 18 holes that we saw. The Patrick Reed, the fan. So I was walking around today and these dudes, where I'm walking down 16,
Starting point is 01:05:19 these dudes were crossing the fair, when they were like, oh, you laying up on this hole? I was like, it was sick burn first of all. And so I get talking to these guys, they're nice guys, they're from the Worcester golf team and chat with them for a little bit. And then I'm heading back to the media center for the presser.
Starting point is 01:05:36 My mind's going nuts. I'm like, all right, I don't know what's going on here. I'm on my phone. And I walk right past this cart. And one of the dudes that yelled at me is in the cart with a security guard and they rolled right past and I was like, I was like, yo, what's up? He goes, yeah, I don't ask Patrick where you decide your shovel and he was getting us
Starting point is 01:05:56 quarter of the grounds. Well, listen, I'm in shoot your shot. Yeah, I think that's exactly his front posted a video of it. He went victory lapping on Twitter, which is- Yeah, which can we go back to- It's pretty innocuous. Why that all happened is because of the P.J.s lack of- Correct.
