Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm going to be the right club today. Yeah. That's better than most. How about him? That is better than most. Better than most! Before we get rolling here as I, uh, I'm about to take Tron to the cleaners drafting our 2020 Ryder Cup teams We started our last episode with some trivia courtesy of our friends at Calaway. That was fun. Let's do it again. Here we go, what is the only master's round in the last 25 years where a player
Starting point is 00:00:47 hit all 18 greens in regulation? Who did that? I'm gonna have to hurry, I'm not gonna wait much longer. The answer is Jim Furek in the first round in 2009. You can actually watch Jim as well on our latest edition of Wild World Golf that if you're listening to this podcast, it is live on our YouTube channel.
Starting point is 00:01:03 And if you like golf trivia like this, KaloAz got something fun for you on Friday, April 10th at 5.30 PM Eastern. They're partnering with FanBeat to put on a 10 minute live golf trivia game where you can play on your phone, your tablet or computer. I believe it's exactly like the HQ, the old HQ trivia games, I stop playing those,
Starting point is 00:01:21 but I know a lot of people love playing those for a long period of time. It's the Maverick Major's trivia challenge and there's prizes on the line like a Maverick driver, Jaws Wedge, Cromesoft golf balls, and many more. So get on a spot quickly, the game is going live Friday, April 10th, 5.30 PM Eastern time and to answer the first question in advance, go to calway golf dot com slash fan beat. That's fan beat F A N B E A T. Calway golf.com slash fanbeat, that's fanbeat, F-A-N-B-E-A-T, CaliGolf.com slash fanbeat to be ready for the 10-minute live-gave happening Friday, April 10th, 530 PM Eastern.
Starting point is 00:01:53 Let's get to the pod. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the No-Lang-Up Podcast, another special edition, if you will, which if every episode is a special edition, is any episode, a special edition. It's a great point. It's a question. But I think this is special. This has never been done before. Extreme circumstances,
Starting point is 00:02:08 solid here, of course. My opponent today, Mr. Tron Carter, welcome. You know, opponent, but in these trying circumstances, also friend. Samuel Ryder would have loved that statement. That's the intent of this competition. And we, you know, things are gonna get probably a bit hostile today.
Starting point is 00:02:27 So we brought in a mediator for today's conversation, which is of course none other than Mr. DJ Pie. Hey guys, glad to be here. Excited to take some concrete steps towards, maybe still identifying a little bit of a brighter future here. DJ, thanks for stepping in and appreciate all you do for the game. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Thanks, man. Hey, here, take this to me. Keep it fair. Keep it fair. Keep it fair. Well, why don't you tell us about what we're doing? Well, guys, it's a fluid situation. As I think we've discussed, the world is in a fluid situation right now.
Starting point is 00:02:57 The biennial rider cup matches are currently scheduled for Friday, September 25th, to Sunday, September 27th. It's a fluid situation. Do we think the world is gonna be back to a recognizable state by then, you know, hopefully? Yes. But the qualifying process is gonna be completely upended. We've lost it.
Starting point is 00:03:17 We've lost it. It was on the edge. It was kinda on the edge, but that's another topic. And we've lost it. So what we're gonna do today is in the spirit of really staging the best hypothetical tournament that we can stage is to pick 12 captions picks. I think that's, I've been writing hard for this idea. I know you've been writing hard for this idea, Sally.
Starting point is 00:03:38 I forget where you stand on this idea. Oh, for sure. Pro this idea of the idea that a point system could potentially add a player that you wouldn't want on your team Needs to go out the window. It's not really. It's not good and the point system is also terrible So like that the combination of those two things. Yeah, I'm very time frame It's so dumb some tournaments count some don't majors are somehow worth Double if you win it and you already almost get double the money if you win, so basically you win a major,
Starting point is 00:04:07 you're on the team, shout out Jimmy Walker 2016. It's bad, it's really bad. I don't know how much time you want to spend on this, but the idea that, and Capin's default to this of like, all right, well, ninth on the list, I got to take him, like, gosh, he's seventh in the world and ninth, actually they didn't in 2016 with Bubba, which was sick, but they just go default to like, well, he's got the next most points, let's take him.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And it's so dumb. I've got him right where I want him. He's already throwing half his team into the bus. No, I'm motivating them. It's a tactic. So, to underscore the point a little bit, with so many tournaments being thrown out, with so many tournaments being thrown up in the air, the qualifying process, no matter what happens, let's say everything stays put with the Ryder Cup,
Starting point is 00:04:46 everything goes on as normal. The qualifying process is just not gonna be what we've seen in the past. So you'd fill me in on how realistic there is, but there's a possible chance that we could be seeing just 12 captains picks to fill out this match in the fall. And for the sake of this episode, we are gonna treat that as if it's news.
Starting point is 00:05:04 It is official. We are the sake of this episode, we are gonna treat that as if it's news. It is official. We are the 2020 Ryder Cup will be played with nothing but Captain's picks. For the sake of this podcast. For the sake of this podcast. Since neither Captain was available to make their picks and lock them in on April 1st, I decided to go with the next best thing,
Starting point is 00:05:18 which is to reach out to a representative, a consiglia area from each side. For the Americans choosing for the American team, we will be Mr. Chris, Sully Solomon. Sully congratulations on your cap and see. We're going to get to this big moment in just one second. First, let me introduce the guy on the end or the other end of the day is here. You know him as turncoat Tron. Trust fun Tron.
Starting point is 00:05:38 A lot of nasty names that American fans have come up for for this guy, but Europe he's huge. He does a ton to support the game over there in Europe. Tron Carter, Tron, welcome to this morning's proceedings. Hey, thanks, Dej. I've been called a lot worse on Twitter after I put you to the US National Anthem the other night on Taurus Suss, season finale of season five. So glad to be here.
Starting point is 00:06:01 I'm sure you and your wife and your young son would have knocked out the Swedish national anthem with no problems. Yeah, I will offer that both my wife and my son have Swedish citizenship. So that gives, obviously gives trauma pass for not knowing the stars playing the band. Speaking of the stars playing O'Banner,
Starting point is 00:06:17 the stars in Stripes, let's start over to our American captain, Soli. Soli, what does the Ryder Cup mean to you? Well, as the Ryder Cup captain here, I will be spending the next two years speaking nothing but platitudes, sharing saying absolutely nothing of importance for considerable time to come.
Starting point is 00:06:34 I will say the word experience about 38 times, even though there's absolutely nothing statistical that supports the fact that the non-fact that experience matters in this event or that experience plays well. So that's pretty much the run of show. I have nothing but the utmost respect for my competitor. You know, we've had many days dueling on the golf course.
Starting point is 00:06:53 And now we go to dual in a rider cup, which is a dream come true. I, you know, looking ahead the cap and see is kind of how to feeling that we will be lined up and what better way to kick off 2020 than to go up against my good friend, Sean Carter. Very, very cool. Solid, of course, these matches will be played in Shiboygan slash Kohler slash Haven slash
Starting point is 00:07:12 outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin. You know, as someone who's been to Wisconsin, this must be just huge for you. Well, who wear my packer fans in the room here tonight. Come on, here. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. the whole crowds here yes thank you guys thank you now please please let's get to the show you know the people of Wisconsin dirters passion sports fans I mean of course you know the University of Wisconsin just just just down the road and man do they have some great golf courses up there to so to bring this event to bring the world really to Wisconsin you know I used to live in a Jason state in Illinois. So you know how much Wisconsin means to me. Of course. And for some reason, being from that general
Starting point is 00:07:51 region means that you're a great leader to go and take a writer. Well, we can't wait to see what happens. And Tron, on the flip side of that, you know, obviously a links master in your own right, season two tourist sauce champion played a lot of links golf. Season season four as well. Season four as well. Thank you. You know clearly it's just a very link style golf course we're going to see here at Whistling Strait. Talk to me about how this this much is harking back to your many many many many many many trips overseas. Listen for sure on at least on the surface it does pretty sticky grass up up there. Doesn't really play like a link, so it's like a fake links.
Starting point is 00:08:26 It would be sick if one of the captains just came out and was like, yeah, listen, that's bullshit, man. That's not true, that's not how this goes. Well, the straights course is not links, but the Irish course up there is an Irish course. Sorry, anyway, it's tron, I'll cut you. I would like to point out though, that late September in Wisconsin Wisconsin on the shores of,
Starting point is 00:08:47 you know, Lake Michigan, correct? Correct. What the heck is a MacGyography? You know, if you guys are going to see the lack of comments on his face as you said that, all bets are off. There's a lot of variables that can be added with the weather, which I think we all know that the US team, they're not mutters. Sure.
Starting point is 00:09:08 We're not talking about a beautiful course on the shores of the Red Sea. Of course. breathtaking views. breathtaking views, that sort of thing. Yeah, actually it's kind of breathtaking views. It's awesome. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Do we want to talk seriously about Whistling Straits? But if it's cloudy, are they really breathtaking views? Let's, okay. I'm moderating, so I'm going to steer us in this direction. Let's talk about Whistling Stripes, because we're going to pick two hypothetical teams here, and I want to know how the course factors into your decision. Solid, we had a chance to go there about six months ago,
Starting point is 00:09:41 as a bit of a scouting trip for some videos that will roll out at some point when the world returns to normalcy. Which I think is bullshit that you guys were able to go on a scouting trip. It's open to the public, John. You can go anytime you like. What did you see from the golf course and how did that impact your team selection? I would say, you know, I wish I would love a little more say in the destinations we choose.
Starting point is 00:10:03 I think it's a, okay, good golf course for my team. I think there's others that would fit better. I think the step that the Europeans took in 2018 towards course setup, design, and selection, I would have encouraged me to steer even more the other way. So you want to set it up like a pro, Ann? Those are your words. Those are definitely your words. I think if the weather is an element, the match,
Starting point is 00:10:30 I think it's going to be very similar to Kiwa. I would say Pete Dygolf course that is very difficult and that can favor the Europeans. As easy as we could potentially set it up, I don't want to give too much away in kind of what we're thinking with the setup. You know, we can try to shift that more towards our advantage.
Starting point is 00:10:51 For some reason, that's allowed in this event. I still do not understand why. Imagine if like the NBA coaches got to set like, you get to put like the weird ship behind the backboard, you got to put the hoops at different heights or something. Solid wants everybody to get a trophy. What's everybody else's team to getops at different heights or something. Solid ones, everybody get a trophy. Once everybody has team, we get a trophy. I do want everyone on my team, we get a trophy.
Starting point is 00:11:09 That's kind of the idea of this competition, I think. So yeah, try not to get your philosophy different from that. Well, first of all, there's only one trophy. Kind of a no-I team situation. Yeah, and it's a cup. Right, people forget that. But also, yeah, like shit should be hard. Why?
Starting point is 00:11:26 These are the best ways for my response. You know, the margins should be thin. I'm okay with hard, I think, neutralizing and squeezing the life out of the excitement of an event is going too far the opposite direction. Do we think it's gonna be hard? No, I don't think it's gonna be hard. I think it's hard for a 20-handy cat.
Starting point is 00:11:45 I think if you played every hole back, and if the wind blows, it's going to be tough. That's the big factor, I think. I mean, these greens are difficult to come into when there's wind elements to it. Because you can't, there's not really options to turn the series head on for a second. Just slap anyone that calls it a length because these greens don't present you an opportunity to approach them with run-up shots in a lot of situations. So it is gonna be more of an aerial game. Like a lot of golf courses that true links courses
Starting point is 00:12:15 are almost always based on how the wind plays gonna give you a ability to run a shot up if you're downwind. And that's just not the case here. So if the wind doesn't blow, I mean, shit, at the 2015 PGA, Jason Dayshot 20 under on this golf course, like it doesn't have to be difficult. There's a lot, a lot, a lot of flexibility on the captain side in determining that.
Starting point is 00:12:36 So see how it goes. And T2, right? There's ability to use. We have to get to that. Yeah. Wait, are we gonna talk about setup more here? Oh, we're gonna talk about what I'm gonna do. Well, let's start there.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Okay, what, what, you know, this is an unprecedented move for Riot. You're gonna cut down all the, all the natives. Listen, this is, To that, I would say what native, right, it's already gone, but it has been destroyed. You know, there's not a ton of native grass out there. We were out there,
Starting point is 00:13:00 you could hit it kind of almost wherever you wanted to, off the tee. To a point. To an extent, yeah. But that's where pros hit it, it's wherever you wanted to off the tee to a ton extent. Yeah, like a but that's where pros hit it. It's not you're not hitting that's the reason why scores are so like this golf course for a 20 handicap is a complete nightmare because if you're top and balls if you're if you're spraying them way right you're in very very thick grass where pros hit it that thick grass does not come into play especially that for a match play event. It's not much of a determinant. So fairways are plenty wide out there.
Starting point is 00:13:27 We're going to keep it that way. We are going to be flexing T's quite a bit, depending on the wind situations. My goal is to put, I think, Rory, maybe Rom, they're kind of in a different category when it comes to length, but when you look at my lineup, situations where maybe potentially more of my guys are have abilities to cover bunkers than the Europeans do is Gonna be kind of where we're looking to gain some of those margins, so
Starting point is 00:13:53 There's a lot of charting going on. We're gonna get real creative. We might you know We might be playing from the red T's one of the holes We might be playing from on it from a T on another hole. There is no rule against that I never thought about that. Cross-country rules. You know, we've considered ideas where, you know, like you play maybe even like a par-five, we might make a par-turn into a par-three one day. You know, with a secret T that we won't tell the Europeans about.
Starting point is 00:14:18 I took what happened in 2018 very personal, and this is going to be my revenge. I can make you say setting up holes where you're forced to play it off of a hospitality tent. Sure. Absolutely. Absolutely. I know your team is very, very comfortable doing that sort of thing. There's going to be, you'll have to really look to see it, but like targets will be added above hospitality
Starting point is 00:14:39 tents. The only way to get to a certain pin is by banking it off of it. I mean, I learned that some of this from Paul Azinger. You know, he talked about his course set up in the 2008 Ryder Cup, and you know, he watched the Europeans in Praxarounds and they're puttin' to all the corners of the greens, you know, and he turns, gets to his assistant or someone and just says, put the pin right there, put it right there, put it right there, right in the center of the green.
Starting point is 00:15:00 These guys are gonna be so nervous they can't spit. Well, let me just say from an outside view point, it's very refreshing to see a captain taking it so seriously. Finally. And putting this kind of thought into it. So thank you. I forget who it was on the pod somewhat recently. And I may be even was Zinger,
Starting point is 00:15:18 but when asked about captain C or setup or any of this, maybe it was Brad Facts, I forget. But he asked somebody from or any of this, maybe using Bradfax, I forget. But he asked somebody from the PJ of America, like does it matter to you if we win? And the guy actually like somewhat offended, like of course it matters. Okay, well you wouldn't do things the way that you're currently doing.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Like the ceremony is captain thing and just all the dumb stuff that goes into it, like you wouldn't do that if you only cared about winning. Right. So, we're gonna cut some of that riff-rack out. Well, speaking of winning, I know, you know, a massive part of any of these wins and losses
Starting point is 00:15:52 is the assistant captains that are in the team room, the ass cap that are driving the carts, that are making sure everybody's wearing the same belts. How many do I get? I don't care, have as many as you want. That's cool, yeah, It's whatever you want. That's a second. Let's say no more than 20.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Okay. How about that? I got a little down. You know, a huge part of the announcement is really stretching this thing out over the course of a couple of years here. So why don't you start with your, let's say, let's hear two of them, two of your assistant captains. Well, the first and why, of course.
Starting point is 00:16:24 My first cap and see pick, he's gonna be leading our security operation for the week as well. He will be also head of communications and he will also be in charge of his own fire squadron. And of course, we'll be going out of the code named the cat for the week, but Mr. Tiger Woods will be having a pod and he will be running the comms while
Starting point is 00:16:45 playing as well. He's going to be wearing the earpiece. I felt like that kind of held him back a little bit at role Melbourne. Not my current rules. You're not changing the rules of golf. Read the federal chapter. You said it already. Rules change, but so that Mr. the cat will be referred to from here, this point forward, we'll be taking over fire squadron, the A fire squadron. Well, you did, you kind of slipped in a very loaded word there, which was pod.
Starting point is 00:17:13 So clearly, you will be going towards some sort of pod system. We will be going towards a pod system and actually will be kind of all encompassing some ideas that I've heard, you know, from a person in particular, to try to establish some continuity going forward. So I'm not just looking for the 2020 Ryder Cup. We are looking for a certain formula going forward for the foreseeable future. Sure. Would you like me to continue with more?
Starting point is 00:17:39 Yeah, one more assistant would be great. I believe you asked for two. I do apologize. It's his first time. If you have two, do you really have one? The second pod leader will be Mr. Phillip Alfred Mikkelsen. His group will not be a fire squadron, but it will be an investor group actually.
Starting point is 00:17:54 He will be leading that one. It's a fond of sorts. Yes, he will be leading that one. And that's all I can say about that one currently. Thank you. Tron, a couple of assistant captains from you and why they felt like they needed to be in the locker room. Yeah, before I get to assistant captains, I want to shout out.
Starting point is 00:18:11 I got my my status decision team 15th club. Of course. And yeah, so they'll be doing a lot of work forming. Shout out to Justin Raid and all the fellas. Wes Wood's gonna be my team room manager. Wes Wood and Thorbeer and Olison will be team room and post celebration and all that. What was the culture you're really looking to cultivate it?
Starting point is 00:18:32 Well, they're cultivating it. I'm trying to keep them kind of keeping everybody loose, but also more focused on the end result, not the process. Trying to keep them out of the process. I asked this only as a journalist, but are there any probation standards that Mr. Olsen's under that would keep him from being in the United States or anything like that,
Starting point is 00:18:49 or has all that been cleared up? I believe all that's been cleared up. Okay, cool. Where's Jamie Donaldson and all this? He is our chief pastry officer. So someone like Westwood, for instance, to see, does he have any type of role, like specificity in his role, is there,
Starting point is 00:19:11 a really long situation? He hangs out in the team room and also hangs out with all the wags. Okay. So he keeps all the wags occupied and intersting and all that. No, not stealing anybody's girl. He's just providing alcohol and hanging out in the hot tub and all that stuff Just an ambiance. Yeah, exactly. Keep everybody loose. But so those are those are my assistant captains
Starting point is 00:19:36 Eddie Pepperel is gonna be my lead assistant He and podrig will be kind of handling a lot of the golf stuff for me. And then Total Wolf will be introducing a new position team principal from Formula One. He is the Mercedes-Benz Patronus team, you know, principal slash CEO for the Formula One team. And I'm really impressed with the job he's done with them. And I think some of those principles that he can bring over to our team would be much appreciated. He's organized strategic big fan.
Starting point is 00:20:12 And just for the golf media assembled here, that was Toto Wolf for Toto Wolf. Toto Wolf. T-O-T-O-T-O-W-O-L-F-S. His actual name, Toto Wolf. We are not in Formula one anymore, but. Oh, like smooth. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:28 And then I'm also going to have Kymar and Monty as assistant captain. I was ready to roast you for not having Monty. Well, it's just a word about what those guys bring. Yeah, I mean, Kymar, you know, pretty good record at this course. He's got some strategy to add. I've made a million dollars. Add to the mix. And then, yeah, Monty's gonna be in charge of the culinary operation.
Starting point is 00:20:50 For us. We're working in a concert with the pastry chef, I'm sure. Yeah. Yeah. Solid, who rounds out your assistant captains? Your ass captains? Well, I did kind of throw some jabs at the term experience,
Starting point is 00:21:04 but I do want a captain that has experience actually running the show. You know, as a first time captain myself, I can't see around the corner. I don't know what traps are waiting for me. And I want someone that is able to implement this kind of pod-ish system better than I can. And the one guy that has gone outside the box
Starting point is 00:21:25 as a US captain that's not named Hal Sutton in recent years is Mr. Paul Azinger. So I'm bringing him in to handle all those roles. He's the most cutthroat, I think. He's going to help me the most in terms of maybe literally cutting some throats, but also just cutting the rough. And he knows the thing or two about setup, what kind of setup, where we can get those advantages.
Starting point is 00:21:44 I'd like to pretend like I know a lot of those things, but he's good relationship with the players. the rough and he knows the thing or two about setup what kind of setup where we can get those advantages. I'd like to pretend like I know a lot of those things, but he's good relationship with the players and you know if you need to treat limb taken out it gets taken out. If I may correct me if I'm wrong, but is the rider kept still in NBC? It is. So if you could just speak to maybe the downstream effects of viewers will not have their lead analyst in the booth anymore with as you're selfishly hogging him for your team room. Well, it's in our hearts, it's in their blood. Imagine that for three days, and that's what you're
Starting point is 00:22:10 missing. So he also hates your opinions. Yes. Which is a big, big plus for Salt Lake's dam. Yes. And also a role I will be passing on and not taking the brunt of myself as the lead captain. I just, I want to be focused on the competition, right? And this whole thing turns into one big media tour, big media circle jerk, if you will. So I want somebody who is, you know, decisive, committed, committed, is that a word? Committed, committed.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Committed? Sure, that works. See, I'm not the media guy, all right? Speaks well. Thank you for nominating me. I'd be honored to do it. Can represent us very well. We're gonna take Mike Wond.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Oh, wow. This might be some recency bias and the probably just recorded with him, but I want him handling all media. I'll press, he can go on Faraday. He can do, he can be, you know, the figurehead of this, for all I care. All I care about is getting that W.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Sean, you should get, I know he's not technically European, but that guy who is the White House press secretary for like six days, a spicer. Know the mooch. Oh, the mooch. You should get the mooch as you're reading it. No, I think, I think, you know, just for the record,
Starting point is 00:23:16 I'm not planning on relinquishing my role. Here, we're trying to build a dynasty, me and Toto, and Eddie Pappros is gonna do all my media for me. Excellent. Yeah. There you have. Well, just a few more things I think we'd want to get to before we actually get into the actual team.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Solid, there's, of course, much more that goes into the Ryder Cup than just three days of golf. There's a lot of events. There's Galas, Galas. There's all types of speaking engagements, everything. If you give us a bit of a run of show, what your players can expect, what trans players Dallas, there's all types of speaking engagements, everything. If you give us a bit of a run of show, what your players can expect, what trans players can expect, and how you might be changing the week, the week of process. You know, I don't have a ton I can share at this point.
Starting point is 00:23:57 I do, I can't tell you the things will set up. You're happy to talk about what you this you'd like to keep, keep under wraps. I, you know, our team will know. I think kicking off the weeks with something like the opening ceremonies is of course, you know, a tradition that I'm happy to uphold. I don't think I want our teams mingling and too many other distractions after that. I think that's my way of reaching across the aisle and saying that I think more time for the teams individually to hope that they play their best golf gives us the best
Starting point is 00:24:25 chance at a entertaining competition. Do you think the American captain could sign the European team up for a bunch of events that they had to do? I think it kind of is how like the PJ of America and European tour organized like this gala and some of that stuff has fallen off over the years because it's like we what are we doing here? Yeah. Why are we driving an hour into Charleston in Linna's and getting in car accidents before the event even starts? But I'd also like to name an honorary assistant captain. Please. I was hoping so.
Starting point is 00:24:53 She will not be allowed in our team room or anything like that, but I just, I want to honor her effect and really, the touch that she's had on this event is just in the room. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Justine Reed. Yes. You think that European tour members You know, really the touch that she's had on this event is just in real. Justine Reed. Yes. You think that European tour member, her husband. So yeah, justine Reed.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Legit. I almost had her as an assistant captain, as a pod leader. You're, you know, your loss looks to be Tron's game. As a trade-off is willing to make, I think. Team Europe won up. Before we kick off the festivities to, I'd like to proud to announce the team USA's new clothing partnership with the original Penguin.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Of course. We will be bringing a party boy element to some of the scripting. There'll be lots of blues. And you know, just a whole new look for the US team that's going to really signify the new era. Excellent. I thought that was an ad read. I thought you were transitioning.
Starting point is 00:25:46 No, absolutely not. All right. Great. Well, yeah, shout out to original psyched. All right. Shall we get into it? Let's do it. Before we do, but the teams as well, just want to add that of course, of course, we will be switching to the president's cup style of deciding matchups. Of course. Of course. Listen, that's all for that. It has to happen. And to reiterate what that is for the list. So one team puts up a match and then the other team has to decide who they're putting up against that match instead of the blind draw, which is the current setup, which is dumb
Starting point is 00:26:18 and lame. There were also, you know, I had a feeling that would be well received. I haven't feeling my next step might not be that well received. The second, the afternoon wave of rounds will be starting a bit earlier than in the past. Okay. So there will be some time for guys in the early groups to also play in the afternoon, but we're going to put that depth to test. So there will be some matches that are kicking off in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:26:48 That, you know, I don't, I don't, I don't think that the team cats and the host team captain can dictate the honestly, I'm worried about daylight this time of year, you know, up and up in Wisconsin. And I'd hate to see this thing go to a Monday finish. It's a concern. So it's, it's in the best interest of everyone involved that we get to the event in three days. Cool, our first guy's out, he's gonna beat the shit out of you.
Starting point is 00:27:11 That's certainly. That's certainly subjective. That would be sick, if you were banking on your guy winning so early that you put him out in a match that was set to start before he finishes first time. That could be the T be the TC way. All right, let's get into it without further ado.
Starting point is 00:27:27 We had a coin flip, of course backstage. Solid congratulations. Thank you. You will be going first. Not to you guys are really drafting from the same pool of players, but what I'd love to hear is your first pick. We of course are going to have 12 guys on each side.
Starting point is 00:27:39 I'd love to hear your first pick. And maybe even what pod or squadron or investment mutual fund they'll be put into. So that's one thing I wanna make clear before we get going here. The reason I'm bringing Zinger in here is, I don't know the person out, the relationships between all these guys. Okay, I'm not gonna pretend to be that guy.
Starting point is 00:27:56 I am gonna surround myself with guys that do know the inner working, so these relationships. And I trust that we are going to have a beautiful fallout and everyone's gonna fall into three nice categories. With that in mind, the first guy I'm going to take coming off a fantastic performance at the president's cup. I've been assured every reason to believe he's going to be fully healthy come September.
Starting point is 00:28:17 That of course, he's going in the cat's fire squad and he is the cat himself. He will be a playing assistant captain, Mr. Tiger Woods. Feels like a no-brainer. Anything else you want to say about what he brings to the team? Or probably the greatest player of all time. It's going to remind you guys, it's not an easy course to walk. It's cold, potentially windy. We might be doing some climate control up there as well. I'm going to, I'm going to,
Starting point is 00:28:41 are you getting to give the guys cards next time, too? I haven't thought of that, thank you for the idea. That is a tremendous idea. How about the fact that he WD'd from the players before he knew all the COVID-19 stuff was gonna go down, he knew. The cat, makes you think. All right, listen, I don't know what else we could say
Starting point is 00:28:56 about the cat, he's the cat. So congratulations on having the cat. Tron, your first pick, please. Yeah, but before we finished that, I always wanted to say this, first shizzle. It's the first pick, please. Yeah. But before we finish that, I always wanted to say this for shizzle. It's the first pick. First guy needs no introduction. Dusted scam champ at the Walker Cup in 2017 at LA Country Club.
Starting point is 00:29:16 T6, Saudi Arabia this year, similar look at the Red Sea as we'll be having to Lake Michigan. He's got five second place finishes in the last two years, number 67 player in the world, big shot Bob McIntyre. Wow. Talk to me about making him your first choice and really setting the tone with Bob McIntyre. Yeah, I think.
Starting point is 00:29:37 I know the resume speaks for itself. You know, he's only, he's only, what, 23 years old, I think. We can fact check that real quick. Hold on, one sec. Robert McIntyre. Yeah, 4 1996, age 23, went to college at McNeese State University, down in Louisiana, which don't-
Starting point is 00:29:55 We don't have to tell you much about the program down there. Well, you know, the fact that you can go from Obon, Scotland to McNeese State. Can I can play anywhere? Yeah, exactly. You know, you're, you're very, you're very, he's got one professional win, which was the Kuwait Championship in 2017. And then T6 at his first and only major appearance last year,
Starting point is 00:30:18 of course, at Port Rush. I do also think it's heady since Solidwell obviously be putting Kyle Stanley on his team to put the guy who who tried to end Kyle Stanley's life Last year at the open championship for the no for call. Well that and you know, he beat the again Beat the shit out of cam champ Not on my team Yeah, so he's got Walker Cup experience playing on foreign soil and Yeah, he's he's shown that he shown that he's not afraid to back down.
Starting point is 00:30:45 ADLs 4. No, he won't back down. He's not afraid of the thing. ADLs 4, which is huge. All right. Very not who I was expecting, but I love hearing the rationale. Solid, your second pick, please. I'm going to go with the guy that I'm going to run right back out there with Mr. Woods. He had great success again.
Starting point is 00:31:02 Well, Melbourne, this is a very obvious pick as well. One of the best players in the world, Mr. Justin Thomas. Of course, listen, of course. You know, you've gotten to know JT. You know, I know you mentioned, you're not familiar with the inner workings of the interpersonal relationships of everybody on the team, but JT's a guy you've got to know a bit.
Starting point is 00:31:18 What talked to us about him? What's he like off the course? Let the people in a little bit here. You know, he's the same guy off the course that he is on the course. You know, he's, you know, people often ask me, you know, who are the best, let the people in a little bit here. You know, he's the same guy off the course that he is on the course. Sure. You know, people often ask me, who are the best hangs out there and he's one of them.
Starting point is 00:31:30 He's the guy that doesn't treat himself like he is a famous professional golfer at any point and is just a good casual guy to hang out with. You know, I look to and trying to match up guys in their relationships with other guys for how they're gonna play in four ships, right? And these guys have four ships experience. You know, there's always a lot of uncertainty and maybe not enough attention paid to the golf
Starting point is 00:31:50 ball and how guys play different guys golf balls. He was able to make the adjustment to Tigers golf ball at Roe Melbourne. And their experience, obviously they were a very formidable team down there and their experience, you know, running through the internationals at Royal Melbourne with that in that exact four-some format, makes me think they can do it again. So just for my own identification, of course, he will be playing under the cats and the cats.
Starting point is 00:32:16 And the cats are quadrant. Thank you. Tron, pick number two, please. Yeah, I'd like to go back to Robert McIntyre, just talking a little bit more about what I saw there. I've just, I've been Google this guy in the last few minutes. Turns out it's actually a great thing. I've been, I've been up since 6 a.m. this morning doing research. You know, second place finish at the 2018 finish challenge.
Starting point is 00:32:36 A lot of people forget about that one. Second place at the Fochon Open in, in China in 2018. And then, you know, tied for second at the British Masters in 2019, second at the Maiden Denmark, six at the Open Championship, T2 at the Porsche European Open. So you say I wouldn't be doing my job for fighting the Italian Open.
Starting point is 00:32:57 I'm hearing a lot of second places. I'm hearing a lot of fourth place. I'm not hearing a lot of wins. Listen, it's just sample size. You know, he's 23. What more do you want? Well, listen, I mean, as the Americans just threw out JT, you know, a prodigious winner in his young years, you know, it's interesting is all. I'm interested to hear who you're coming up with
Starting point is 00:33:17 with that pick number two. Yeah, pick number two, top 30 in the world guy went three and out at the 2018 Eurasia Cup, which is something else that we really look at. We look at Eurasia Cup, we look at Walker Cup, we look at performance in national opens and we look at the trophy as son too. Forbular what? Terell Hatton. Oh, talk to it.
Starting point is 00:33:36 Listen, everybody obviously saw him in the call journey at Bay Hill. Talk to me about how much that performance kind of influenced your decision to put him on this team. Yeah, that, I mean, you know, certainly kind of an aerial golf course. You got to hit, you know, commit to lines off the tee and then you got to, you know, really bring it with the irons. So just nails. I mean, the guy, and he's, and he's a, he's a nutcase, which I dig. Which we like. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:59 Bit of rider cup experience. He's a dog. He's a dog. He's a dog, right? You played in the 2018, I'm really loving the potential ability for the top two guys on Tron's team to get flustered because it seems like a Macatar gets quite flustered quite easily and gosh, Teryl hadn't. I don't know how he's going to handle the US galleries. That's going to be interesting to see. Oh boy, this is a good thing. Well, I mean, if you, you know, Teryl was the love it down at Donut Bay Hill. People weren't really taken over.
Starting point is 00:34:25 I think people really, I'd be different at the Radar Cut. It might be slightly different. I don't think he'll have quite as warm of a reception. I do think the middle finger endeared him to some American fans, but I think, I think, I gotta think people are gonna put country before. I'm expecting more of those middle fingers.
Starting point is 00:34:39 That's true. Solly, please continue. Pick number three. We're gonna stick in this, what we're penciling in is Tiger's Fire Squad. Sure, okay. It's a fluid situation. It is a fluid situation.
Starting point is 00:34:51 We're gonna go with P. Is this Cantley or Reed? So it is gonna be PC, it's gonna be Mr. Cantley. Unbelieveable player that I think would have been a great addition to the 2018 team. I was campaigning pretty hard for him to be a part of that team. And I think we're going to see him on every team basically for the next 10 years. I think we're only scratching the surface of what he's going to accomplish out in the PGA tour. I think he's a tremendous, tremendous match by player.
Starting point is 00:35:18 When you're campaigning for these guys to be on the team, talk to me about how that process goes. Yeah, it's pretty, yeah. It's mostly me and my bathroom and my mirror. Just like, come on, take him. Take him. No, just pointing out what guys have done that, it's hard to break through in this weird network of hierarchy that the US seems to have. Your body system. Yeah, you guys have a body system.
Starting point is 00:35:42 I refuse to acknowledge the term you guys. We're changing things around here. Turn in the battleship. But it's hard to get through. If you don't break the door down with your play as somebody that's never been on a team, it's hard to get a captain's pick. So, and he's not really a guy that really
Starting point is 00:35:59 would campaign for one himself. So, he was just a quieter guy that probably, he was on the radar, I'm sure, but I'm sure no captain felt any pressure to pick somebody like him. A lot of people, when they do become captain's picks, there's a lot of texting that goes into it. Now with this being all captain's picks, your phone must be just in Fuego. A lot of texts, a lot of texts. We may get to that a little later. Okay. Okay, whipsymsons on the team. Team Europe, try on your third pick, please. Yeah. Yeah, I don't think this guy needs any any sort of introduction either.
Starting point is 00:36:31 If you can't figure it out yet, I'm backloading my stuff. Sure. And I'm going to, you know, we're going to get down to some of the important tough decisions here at the end, but, you know, I'm trying to give give a little bit of a bump to some of my rookies or some of my young guys here. So world number 82, again, needs introduction. It's high a Schwab. Okay. Austrian. Are you trapped here for the junior rider cup team or the rider cup team?
Starting point is 00:36:56 These 25 years old, you know, again, we played really well last year in national opens. And then, you know, T3 at the BMW International T9 at the Maiden Denmark T9 at the trophy his son. One or two. T4 at the Italian Open II, T4 at the WGCHC Champions and T2 at the Turkish Airlines Open. So really consistent player. People have said that he reminds them a lot of Bernhard Langer. And, you know, 25 year old Austrian.
Starting point is 00:37:29 That was the, was that the through a playoff at Turkish Airlines open? Was that the one that was like under the lights? Are they finished? Who could say that? Again, who could say? I know he lost to the rib at the HSBC. I think the HSBC is probably a pretty similar course
Starting point is 00:37:44 to what we're looking at up and it was a major. You hit that, I know I do, but, you know, it's a pretty similar course. I think the HSBC is probably a pretty similar course to what we're looking at up in the freezer. You hate that, though. I know I do, but it's a pretty similar course, I think. Also, you couldn't find any of the European tour guys that were actually successfully manipulating the world ranking system. No, I want for the guys that were really ... This guy's consistent and he went to the finals of the British amateur loss in the finals, which I know means a lot. Yeah. Again, I don't, you know, the results are great and it's impressive to beat Big Fields, but a lot of, I'm here and a lot of runners up on your team.
Starting point is 00:38:17 And I'm pointing that I was a red flag as a friend and as a, as a confidant. Again, these would be my captains picks, even if we weren't doing all captains picks. Sure. You know what I mean? So I'm trying, I'm trying to get, get these guys out there, get them comfortable, and then we'll announce the big guys later on here. I see. Okay. You know, anything, I don't want to put you on the spot, but I've not watched Mateusz Schwab play much off. Mateusz. Mateusz Schwab. There you go. Anything you can say about his game, what What what he does well Tron walks 72 holes with the master at the Austrian Open and just really impressively saw
Starting point is 00:38:51 Yeah, I mean he went to Vanderbilt. So he's very very musically inclined No, that would be Belmont out Belmont You know comfortable playing in the US. He was joint third in the individual competition both the 2016 and 2017 NCAA Division I championships. Hopefully this answers to, I don't mean to do your job here for, I don't believe that answers question. Well, no, like it's, it's very possible that you're, I know you work with the 15th club, I know you're a big data guy. It's very possible you don't have a good, you've seen them up close
Starting point is 00:39:21 very much. So I would not try to put you on the spot. I just don't know much about this game. I know he's a good driver of the golf ball. Okay. And just hits a chit-loather greens. I love it. Live look at the 15th club, Monkey Meam. I'm not sure. A pretty good question earlier.
Starting point is 00:39:35 He was part of that massive playoff with Tirol Hutton, Benjamin A. Bear, Kurt Kidiama, Victor Perez and Eric Thinru. Exactly. It was, I believe we watched it in the midpines clubhouse the morning we were filming that episode. Shout out to original penguin. Sully, I believe we're filling out the cat squadron. Yeah, we are.
Starting point is 00:39:56 I think, gosh, I might be making some changes to my team just to have a little more fun with this. I want the competition to be close and fun. Again, we even got an any of my killers yet. So I'm gonna round out, this is an easy one, an easy nickname to round out this squad with, and that's the X-man. We're taking Xander, somehow has never played
Starting point is 00:40:16 on a Ryder Cup team, which seems insane. Think his game fits any style course, hits it super high, and this kind of golf course favors that and I think he and can't lay made a great team. They made an okay team at Royal Melbourne and I'd like to see them try it again. They're comfortable with each other clearly and that's my guys. Maybe the best player in the world that nobody ever calls the best player in the world. Yeah, I wouldn't quite say that, but yeah, he's very good. I mean that he might be the best player that nobody ever says is the best player.
Starting point is 00:40:44 Okay. You know, he's very good. That's a big miss on your part, not to have his dad as an ask captain. That's a great point. Complete alpha. You handle your team all you know. Speaking of your team, Tron, let's go to your fourth player. Yeah, I'm going to go with my last, you know, young buck, if you will, young hove.
Starting point is 00:41:06 Oh, there we go. Now we're talking. All right. Mr. Victor Hoveland. I assume you didn't mean G.C. Yeah, he needs no introduction. Anything else you want to say about him? I mean, he just...
Starting point is 00:41:18 Next bucket topic. So, anyone the Puerto Rico openly thinks, so he's a winner. That's right. Thank you. That is a wonderful transition to the next group, which is Phil Mickelson's investor group. We're gonna be straight hitting bombs in this group winner of the Puerto Rican open Tony Fina. Come on down. Talk to me about some of those other wins We do not have time remaining in the show to cover the rest of the wins
Starting point is 00:41:45 But you don't need that in in radical. You know you you kind of been ribbing Tron a little bit on a couple runner-up finishes. You don't necessarily need to win stroke play events to be a great match-play player. He was, you know, for a golf course that did not fit his style of play at all in France. He went out there and I believe went two in one. I know we had a winning record and was one of the lone bright spots. I campaigned very hard for him. Of course, as you know, to get a spot on the team and he did win some loose up. Got the last spot and he's coming with us to Hazel or to Whistling Straits. I don't understand why you say that that course doesn't suit his style of play. He said, Acura, driver of the golf ball, he's comfortable hitting long iron.
Starting point is 00:42:22 Roy McRod's hitting iron's off of part five because the fairways were so narrow. No, I know what was it. I think Fina, it's a misnomer to say that he's just a bomb and gouged or inaccurate off the tee. I think that course actually did favor his style of play. I would respectfully disagree.
Starting point is 00:42:39 But fellas, we're not here to relitigate. For guys that hit it that far, the dispersion that those fairways allowed for is tighter than what a pros natural dispersion's gonna be. So even if he hits a very good tee shot, there was a good possibility it was going to roll into the rough on one of those sides. But I think of course that fits, you know,
Starting point is 00:42:58 that allows his driver to go almost un-inhibited as much better. But he's got a distinct advantage hitting a three or four iron off the tee. Listen, we'll see. Uh, Tron, let's move on to you. Anything else you want to say about Mr. Fina? Nope.
Starting point is 00:43:14 I think it was a great point that you can't give away matches at the Ratter Cup and expect to win matches, essentially. You know? Seems like Sali's loading up on cats. Lot of kids. Surprise you didn't put him in the cat squad. The cats don't get along that well with each other. You know, you got to separate him.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Tron, give us player number five from Team Europe. This guy, of course, he's no introduction. He's proud to partner with Morgan Stanley. Sure. Justin Rose, almost left him off the squad, but yeah, look back at his record, you know, he's a part of the squad. As someone who, you know, I know you're a tinker, you're a certified master fitter, as far as equipment goes, any concerns about his onma clubs and some of the discrepancies and
Starting point is 00:44:00 some of the potential following out that are going on over there? No, absolutely not. Meaning, let me rephrase the question. Would you completely back him down and force a set of clubs into his hand that you think would be a good fit? Yeah, absolutely. Is it any longer with Onma? Next question.
Starting point is 00:44:19 That's what I'm saying. There's a lot of uncertainty going on. I'm curious if Tron sees himself as maybe someone who could fill that void and help Claire up some of the uncertainty there. Again. Yes. I'm not sure if I'm certain to go in, I'm curious if Tron sees himself as maybe someone who could fill that void and help clear up some of the uncertainty there. Again. Yes. Next question.
Starting point is 00:44:31 Not a lot of time. I don't think needed on my next pick. One of the best players in the world, also in the In This Bombs division. Of course, we are talking about Brooks Keppco. And he will be a strong contributing member. He was amazing at Hazelteen. And we are going to set this golf course up
Starting point is 00:44:45 to look a lot like that one in a lot, and not very much so like France where he struggled. As someone who admittedly doesn't follow pro golf as closely as they would like to project that they do, is Brooks hurt? What's going on with Brooks? Is he good? As Ne needed a little bit of work,
Starting point is 00:45:02 but he'll be fine come September. Again, you got to remember, we're talking about an event that's six months away. I've total confidence, I've received a lot of confidence from a lot of people down there in Jupiter to say he will be fine. Why put Brooks with the Phil Investment Group? You know, it was a difficult decision.
Starting point is 00:45:16 I will get on, I want to reiterate that these are just, the squads are just pencils right now. They're just in pencil. But, you know, it's been an instinct for a lot of people myself included to pair DJ and Brooks together in these team events and They don't like that. They don't like playing with each other. The last team event. They got in a fight actually and That was a wild I wish we knew more about that, you know, but they they that happens from oh with a couple of alphas from time to time and
Starting point is 00:45:42 There's a competitors. They they run hot out there. But they're playing styles from what I've heard, you know, Brooks maybe hits Puts a little too hard for DJ. He doesn't like it, done like it in the comeback or is coming back. And they just don't have that chemistry that you think they might be in good friends. So I had to separate the two of them. And I ended up thinking Brooks and Finau
Starting point is 00:45:59 are gonna make a decent pairing and then the other, the other pairing within that, in that for some might be, it might be my house sudden move, bobble find out. All right, I don't know the thought about that. DJ does hit his, he hits his butt's kind of drippy. Interesting. Tron, please.
Starting point is 00:46:14 You're next. Tommy Fleetwood. No brainer there. No brainer there, what Mr. and what was he, 401? At Paris? That sounds about right. He lost his Seglostin. Dusted by Fina.
Starting point is 00:46:27 But I think he was your side of gas. Yeah. Well, Tron, I know he's one of your three, five favorite players in the whole world. Talk to me about what you like about Tommy Fleetwood. Everything. Everything. I love having Fino on the bag, having Finno in the team room as well. Yeah, Tommy just excellent iron player, great driver of the golf ball. No concerns whatsoever with throwing him out there every session. A guy who has, you know, obviously we saw what we saw at the Ryder Cup. Since then, we've seen him in contention. We haven't seen him win a lot. Any any concerns on Tommy in big moments recently.
Starting point is 00:47:03 Not whatsoever. I stopped asking you yes or no questions. They're not paying off for that. So I'll like go ahead. This next pick, I wouldn't say any of my picks are controversial, but maybe it's the most controversial to commit to at this point. Again, I want to emphasize how this golf course is going to play.
Starting point is 00:47:20 It's going to be a big ballpark. All right. It's going to be a lot. It's one big blank canvas ballpark. All right. It's gonna be a lot. It's it's one big blank canvas. Just a few. Of course. Somebody that's had a lot of success at this golf course has been very close to winning a major championship. Backed at you here. Irba. In the bombs division, we are taking Baghdad, Jerry, Bubba Watson. You know, I see where you're going with why that will be controversial, but low key,
Starting point is 00:47:44 one of the best players in the world over the last four months. He's played great golf. He only plays well in even years to make sure that he's on these Wattercup teams for some reason. It's a great setup for him. France was obviously a comical setup for him, but I think he should have been on the team in Hazeltein. I think I said that at the time.
Starting point is 00:48:02 It was a great, great golf course for him. They picked Ryan Moore for some reason. Who did find, but not exactly the best golf course fit. So yeah, we're gonna hit some bombs with Bubba. He's gonna take it over that huge dog leg on the fifth hole. We're just gonna let him go nuts. I commend you on that pick. I think that's an interesting one.
Starting point is 00:48:18 And I love seeing you go outside the box, although how far outside the box is up for debate, but it's interesting to see something a little different. Like, box adjacent. Yeah, box adjacent. Tron, take me way outside the box, man. What do you got? I mean, I think I, I don't think there is a box.
Starting point is 00:48:34 I'm last quiet. We're going to go to Pulse. Pulse has a lifetime membership to the European Ratter Cup team. It's just a member of Meredith. He's a dog. He's a dog. He's a dog. Complete none of a dog. Talk to me about the state of his game.
Starting point is 00:48:49 I don't think we've seen much from him over the last, you know, I don't know since Medina, really? Well, he got his PGA tour card back. That's true, after that weird statistical anomaly that was going on. Yeah, which, that was crazy. No, he's playing fine. He was T32 at API, T27 and Honda, T17 at Saudi,
Starting point is 00:49:11 which I know we look pretty closely at. That's your north star. T16 at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, T13 at the Zozo, T16 at the CJ Cup. All right, so he's hanging. He's hanging. If I was doing Trons Media at the Zozo, T16 at the CJ card. All right, so he's hanging. He's hanging. If I was doing Trons Media X, here I would jump in and say, you know, when he comes to Ian Poulter and Ryder Cups,
Starting point is 00:49:32 you throw records out. You know, when he gets out there against the stars and stripes, you know, it doesn't matter what his game is. Yeah, I mean, he was T6 at the 2019 Saadi as well. So, yeah, I mean, he's gonna peak at the right time. I have no concerns about Poults. How I mean, he's he's gonna peak at the right time. I have no no concerns about Pulse. How do you think he's spending his quarantine? Polishing his cars.
Starting point is 00:49:49 Many, many cars. Yeah. Yeah, it could be a rotator cafe issue in his in his feature. Solly, fill me out, Mr. Mikkelsen's investment fund here. Who's going to be paired with Bubble Watson? Well, again, you know, the pairings could be fluctuated. Of course, this is all pencil. I want to put it in. I want to leave it situated.
Starting point is 00:50:05 Point that out. But, you know, a guy that similar to Phil, fancies himself a bit of an intellectual, similar to Phil is straight-hidden bombs. You know exactly where I'm going with this. He's a person. I can't explain you how much money I would pay to watch Bryson and Bubba pair together.
Starting point is 00:50:20 And that's where I'm going. This is an entertainment product of the day, and I went Bubba and Bryson to get paired together. And that's where I'm going. This is an entertainment product of the day, and I went Baba and Bryce had to get paired together, and that's where I am. Bryce and DeShambo, welcome to the team. I'm gonna add two assistant captains. Okay. What do you mean, Ty?
Starting point is 00:50:34 Please. I'm going to add Pete Bajara, the former the federal prosecutor in New York. Federal prosecutor to the Southern District of New York. Okay. Just that's gonna follow the fill pairing around, or the fill the fill pot around. And then I'm gonna have,
Starting point is 00:50:48 I'm gonna bring Bill Nye, the science guy, onto the squad too. He's deep in the climate change scene right now. I don't know if he's gonna have time on his calendar, but Brandon, question to his thought of, do you have to be of the nationality of one of the teams to be in Captain? I had the same question.
Starting point is 00:51:03 And who could say? I don't think so. I think someone like Preet, who's represented the DA of New York's Southern District, I believe. The song. You know, I'm sure he would put the stars and stripes above a silly golf contest. But if you've had separate conversations with him,
Starting point is 00:51:19 then obviously I wouldn't be able to speak to that. I think he puts the law above any sort of affiliation. And same with Mr. or Dr. Nye, or Mr. Nye, whatever. I don't know if he's an actual doctor. He puts science above everything else. He did a, I need to be a perfect club. He did a documentary that I saw a couple of years
Starting point is 00:51:42 together, it was a little, it was a little off, had some thoughts on it. It was a little, Bill Nye might be kind of a thirst bucket, I think. But it's all, let me just dive real quick back into your actual selection. I picture for whatever reason, immediately what comes to mind on the Bubba, Bryson pairing is how weirdly natural the Bubba and Jeff Overton pairing seem to be. You know what I mean? Just a couple of people who are diametrically opposed in every possible way, and for whatever reason, Bubba was kind of like, was wide open to it,
Starting point is 00:52:15 and totally rolled with the whole weird situation. So was that one that was on your mind? Well, it was kind of like taking my two problem children and making them sleep in the same room in bunk beds. Right. It's like, you guys figured out, okay, we're not, Web Simpson has been through so much. Okay.
Starting point is 00:52:33 I had already started typing in Web Simpson. No, it's the same, that's where you're going. I will not put Web in that position again. I think Web needs to play his first real Ryder Cup without having to babysit somebody. And we're gonna let that happen. Very interesting. All right, John, let's go over to your squad
Starting point is 00:52:49 who's gonna be backing up Mr. Polter here. We're gonna go with the rib. Rory McElroy. Again, needs no introduction. T-4, the Genesis. You know, he won the HSBC. He won the HSBC. We do have some concerns.
Starting point is 00:53:04 He does not play. He's not. Also great success at the 2010 PGH Championship. That's exactly right. I was trying to think if he had any real significant lakeside moments, I know he won the match play at Harding Park. That's very lakeside. Maybe the 15th club can get on.
Starting point is 00:53:25 Some of, some of these Roy's other great lakeside moments. Kiowa. Kiowa. That's a big, big ass lake. That's a big, big ass lake. But similar vibe. Listen, I'll go out and say, I think Roy's a great pick. Thanks, man. I think, I think, I think, he'll really bring a lot of good stuff
Starting point is 00:53:40 to your team. It's all right, please. In the final pod, I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to lie, Zinger's got his work cut out in this pod. I don't know how these personalities all mesh. And this is where I lean on him to say, you know what, we need to kind of move some things around.
Starting point is 00:53:52 But a guy I want leading that pod, kind of being the spokesman and being the guy that people turn to, is Web Simpson. Flesh that one out for me. He is a certified dog. He has been through a lot when it comes to not just his Ryder Cup pairings, but the anchor band and he's come out the other side as truly one of the best golfers in the world, so consistent. And the exact guy you don't want to go up against a match play because he's not going to let you in. He just doesn't let he doesn't give you
Starting point is 00:54:20 a way around him. He is one of the best iron players in the world has been for a super long time. Our good friends over the Sagger and rankings absolutely love him. He is one of the best iron players in the world, has been for a super long time. Our good friends over the Saggering rankings absolutely love him. Currently number one in the world, the Saggering rankings. And I want him as a staple. I think at least three matches, I don't want to commit people to four matches, but I want him going at least three team matches. Talk to me about, and let's I know you don't want to disparage any of your guys, but talk to you about the wholesale turnaround that NLU seemed to make on Web Simpson, because things were a lot bleaker,
Starting point is 00:54:50 I would say back in the day. Solle was just trying to protect his cellphone bill. He doesn't have unlimited text. That's it. No, to be clear, Web is texted his way onto my team. But for a long, long, long time, I just couldn't look at that follow-through and think that he was the actual good ball striker.
Starting point is 00:55:10 I couldn't, I just thought he faked it around and that's on me, look, that's on me. Obviously, one of the elite players and elite ball strikers, he doesn't hit it far, far. I don't think he quite hits it as short as we've pointed out in the past, but that's a guy that's gonna give himself a ton of looks at birdies.
Starting point is 00:55:26 The pudding thing, he's completely clear now with his arm lock putting and he hits puts with such conviction. And taking down Justin Rose at the 2018 Ryder Cup when Rose is number one player in the world, maybe number two player in the world. That meant a lot to me. That guy can lead the, I remember being on that 16th green or whatever that part three was and watching him close that match on being like, that's a guy I won on my team.
Starting point is 00:55:48 Do you remember him shaking it on 11th Augusta? Yeah, and 16th Augusta, and number eight at Medina. Yeah, I do, but as somebody that also lives close to the Hazel, that's how it's gonna say. We have a lot in common. Any concerns that, you know, obviously you and this is not been widely reported to the media, but you and his caddy Paul Tissori have had a bit of a running, kind of, rift or a running, kind of rivalry going in the Florida State Golf Association
Starting point is 00:56:15 winner series events. Will you guys be okay being in the same team room? Of course we will. You know, how can you not say this? You know, look at this pairing and not think how great it would be to have, you know, a caddy who is a great player in his own right on the bag for Web Simpson. It's impossible to say how much value that is. Excellent. We've got the rib on the team, we've got Fleetwood on the team. I got to think you're looking maybe somewhere John Rom, someone like that, what's on your mind? Before we do that, I'm gonna add the big jungle bird as an ass cat. I'm gonna have him follow around whatever.
Starting point is 00:56:52 This is the guy that... Group web is in. Yeah, that of course interrupted the ceremonies at the 2013 USL. He's got unfinished business with a web. He got out of the jail cell. He's got the jail cell, pal. So. web should apologize for that. That was classless. Coming soon, maybe. Yeah, I mean, we, you know, we're gonna go with Rom here. Yeah, I, listen, I think it's
Starting point is 00:57:14 a no-brainer. Yeah, so we're, so really our last, you know, our last five picks, really six picks. Havland, Rose, Fleetwood, Poulter, the rib, and Rom. Starting really getting into the, the meat of the order here. Yeah, I mean, you can say all you want about my squad. And then I got some young bucks. Backloaded. They're a roll up front. 40 nations ready to roll.
Starting point is 00:57:35 Listen, what more can you say about John Rom? Certified killer. Number two player in the world needs no introduction. He needs no introduction. Sully, who's going to be joining Mr. Simpson in the Azinger pod? This is where things get a little weird. Honestly, DJ and Brooks going together
Starting point is 00:57:50 would help things so much. And I end up thinking DJ's gotta go somewhere. He seems as the most adaptable to kind of playing with, almost playing with whoever. I know I just said he doesn't play well with Brooks, but I think he's willing to try almost anything. So I'm putting him in this pod, not pairing him up necessarily with Webb, but maybe potentially with our next guy.
Starting point is 00:58:10 Okay. Knees in introduction. I know, and this is the part of the press conference here where we're gonna hear. I love for each of you just say something nice about someone else's player, and so, Tron, I know you consider Dustin to be the greatest player of all time.
Starting point is 00:58:23 Maybe just a word on why he inspires you so consider Dustin to be the greatest player of all time. Maybe just a word on why he inspires you so much. He's the greatest player of all time. Thank you. Not to get ahead of your next question, which I'm sure was at the top of your list. We're not at all concerned about any bad memories at Whistling Straits for Mr. Johnson. Well, I would like to acknowledge that, or just to ask really, how will we be treating this Andy area? Yeah, that's a great question. acknowledge that or just to ask really, how will we be treating the sandy areas? Yeah, that's a great question.
Starting point is 00:58:47 I don't wanna give too much of it away, but there's a chance we may have one of the teas in one of them at the spot, at DJ's spot on 18, one of the days. So there will be no hospitality tent there, there'll be no, I think they covered it up. The bunker kind of went there, right? Take change shape out there, allegedly.
Starting point is 00:59:04 So there is no DJ bunker anymore, but we will have a plaque there and might have a tea there one of the days. Very cool. Who says teas have to be on grass? That's a great point. I mean, the fact that you'd put a tea in one of the spots that would kind of haunt
Starting point is 00:59:19 one of your team members just shows, shows your leadership right now. It's got experience, he had a great shot out there. I don't know if you can forget that. Tron, your next pick please. Yeah, we're down to the last three here. I'm just gonna, I wanna let some of these guys down easy. I don't wanna have to have them worried about where
Starting point is 00:59:37 or if they're gonna get picked at all, I'm just gonna tell them you're not getting picked. Sergio, you're not getting picked. Matthew Fitzpatrick, you're not getting picked. Sergio, you're not getting picked. Matthew Fitzpatrick, you're not getting picked. You've gotten dusted in previous Ryder cups. I like you a lot. Rafa Caberabale, you're not getting picked. Stenson, you're not getting picked.
Starting point is 00:59:56 Paul Casey, you're not getting picked. Matt Wallace, you're not getting picked. I thought, I thought, yeah, sorry, Mike Wallace. I thought he was a dog, wanted him to be a dog. He's not, he got spooked, you know, after you guys had some contentious Twitter beat devs going out. I didn't realize he went to Jacksonville State University in Alabama, really?
Starting point is 01:00:15 Yeah, yeah. Um, did those DMs keep him off your team? Or are you purely trusting the 15th club and going on data? Are there some personal vendettas on your team? Both, both. But yeah, you just not a not a great pressure player Looked hard at Tom Lewis not on the team though Mike Lorenzo Vera great hair not on the team Danny Willett not on the team
Starting point is 01:00:35 Uncle Yost the greatest ability is availability. He's been hurt a lot lately not on the team Alex Noren looked hard at him trying to smoke Sally, not on the team. Lucas Beard guard looked hard at him. Guido, Miggly Aussie, not on the team. So let's start, I want to talk about who is in the team. Stop asking me about who's not on the team. He just focused on who's not by team. We're gonna go with Molenari. Really? Wow. We're gonna, we're gonna nurse his aspect to health. He's got some really, really good, he's come out firing, the last couple of times the PGA has been there,
Starting point is 01:01:10 had a couple, couple of really good first round showings there. We're gonna nurse him back to health. We're gonna param up with Tommy and get those vibes going again. And, you know, I know Sally thinks he's gonna set the course up accordingly, but I think regardless of where he puts the tease, I'm confident in Mullen Ari's iron play and putting to bring
Starting point is 01:01:31 it home for us. Well, in the spirit of this round, Sally, tell us something positive about Mullen Ari here. He has one five matches in his Ryder Cup career. Yeah. All of them at the most recent Ryder Cup, and he won zero of his previous six. Really?
Starting point is 01:01:51 Yeah, did not know that. All right, we're gonna nurse us back to health. What's your process of doing that? Is it herd immunity? Is that a state of the state? Strategy here? No, I just, I don't know. I mean, we're just, we're taking a flyer.
Starting point is 01:02:04 Could be an Adam Scott, a presence cup situation. Yeah. Greg Norman picking him to give him some confidence. I also looked at getting, you know, doing some British Commonwealth research here, seeing if we could possibly annex Australia. Sure. Which, not about that.
Starting point is 01:02:21 Now that you bring it up, I didn't want to bring it up. Should we be discussing whether or not Britain is part of Europe. Whoa. Wow. I feel like let's operate under the assumption that it is. For Britain and Europe based on the bylaws
Starting point is 01:02:36 that you all said that you. I think it is great Britain in Europe is. It's just you're it's I see Europe up on. I think all right. Let's pick apart the captions agreement after this. For the there's, all right. Let's pick a part, the captain's agreement after this, for the purposes of this press conference, let's operate under the fact that Great Britain is part of.
Starting point is 01:02:50 Okay. You know what, I'm just getting word. I'm just getting word. Francesco Moanori has opted out. Oh, he's off the team now. He has opted out. He said, Mr. TC, Captain TC. I should have mentioned I was owe it six to start.
Starting point is 01:03:07 That's my fault, sorry. He's got some halves in there, but I don't want any of them. He's off the team now? According to him. He thinks he's better served as an assistant captain. Oh wow, okay. So who would be taking his place?
Starting point is 01:03:21 Thomas Peters. Wow. Someone who obviously has some good vibes. I'm getting word now that Tron just forgot about Thomas Peters and he's now thinking, you gotta wait. All right, well a guy that has some good vibes. Needs an introduction. Needs no introduction.
Starting point is 01:03:36 Went to college and one state down in, exactly. In Illinois, a very comfortable plan in this part of the country, bomber. I'm gonna pair him and, and, uh, hatten up and they're going to just absolutely murder people. All right, Sully. Uh, over to you for pick number 10, I believe.
Starting point is 01:03:52 All right. Uh, now this is, this is number 11. This is, uh, pick number 11. We have two, two guys left here. You know, I really was trying to avoid doing it. I wanted to go the other way. I didn't, I felt like what he's done to recent teams has been too much of a distraction. I considered bringing
Starting point is 01:04:11 his wife in as the, as steering into it and just bringing her in as an assistant captain. I couldn't ignore his play on the field. It's just, it's just too good. He is the 12th ranked player in the world, according to the Sagan rankings, of course. Top five in your heart. He's way up there in Stroke's game on the PGA tour. And of course, he has top five in your heart. I'm going to take Captain America Patrick Reed. Solid, this is a tough look.
Starting point is 01:04:38 I'm going to be honest. We have just to set the stage. We're coming out of the world's just being completely in shambles, we're hoping for a new world that's completely unified, we're going to a course with nothing but questionable bunker situations. That's exactly what I'm so glad you mentioned this in that TC's question was whether or not we're playing
Starting point is 01:05:02 them as waste bunkers, we are of course playing them as waste bunkers and no one is of course playing them as waste bunkers. And no one is better out of a waste bunker than Patrick. We do whatever you wanted there, man. But my strategy here is I'm throwing the kitchen sink at Mr. TC here. I'm going I'm I'm forming a great great group of 12 players that can play on a lot of different style of golf course, but especially can play on this one. If we were going to France, would my team look a lot differently?
Starting point is 01:05:27 A lot differently, yes it would. But I'm not going to get caught up in trying to formulate the golf course or the players, the team to the golf course. I'm going to manipulate the golf course to match the team. Sean, the team you're a response to seeing Patrick Reed line it up on the other side of the field there. Well, I think we saw this coming. That's why Justin is one of our assistant captains.
Starting point is 01:05:48 We're trying to, to, you know, totally divide that household. Sure. You won't be allowed near our team or anything like that. But. All right. Tron, pick number 11. Yeah. The read picks stinks. That's disgusting. Yeah. Um, the read picks stinks.
Starting point is 01:06:05 That's disgusting. Yeah. I would love to see you leave him off. It's an entertainment. Come on, it's an entertainer. I've been on the fence on which team I'm gonna root for here. And that's a tough one to overcome. As an American fan, that's gonna be tough.
Starting point is 01:06:19 On home soil, it's gonna be a different scenario. I kind of want to see him and DJ together. I think I'd be interesting. That would be interesting. All right. we got two left here, huh? Correct. I'm gonna go with Shane Lowry. Ooh! Needs no introduction. The reigning champion golfer of the year. Maybe of the two years. It actually could be for two years. Yeah. Great team room guy. No concerns at all with Shane.
Starting point is 01:06:45 Admittedly, he had not even crossed my mind in this exercise, which is crazy since he literally won the last major. Yeah, very interesting. I like that pick. So we rounded out here, what do you think? Let's do it. You know, I'm gonna put the bullet in a few guys' heads here
Starting point is 01:07:01 before I make the last pick. Phil Michelson will not be part of the team. I think he's fine with that. I've talked it over with him. He's fine with that I wanted to I wanted to so bad that I see you're the eagerness and DJ's face. He wants me to take him I won't be taking Jordan's beef. I can't Can't make that I have too many good talent to players right now If I felt like we were in an underdog situation and we needed to mix things up I would do it. I would take a swing, but we're in the cap and seat here. I actually believe that Gary Woodland, you won the US Open, you know, last year.
Starting point is 01:07:31 I'm sorry, you're not going to be on my team. Uh, uh, you're close. I just don't, I think we filled the role of bomber quite well, um, with the other guys. Honestly, maybe the closest call, Matt Kutcher, Matt Kutcher, an absolute match play dog. Again, the kind of guy, Matt Kutcher. Matt Kutcher, an absolute match play dog. Again, the kind of guy you hate going up against. He's so consistent. Not going to be on the team. Kevin Kisner, of course,
Starting point is 01:07:51 always gets thrown around for these team events. He won't be on the team. JB Holmes, again, we're kind of think we're good on the bombers. I think we're okay. How closely do you guys follow the the Windham Championship results? Very, very closely. Very closely.
Starting point is 01:08:04 Ricky Fowler, not going to be on the team. I just. Very very closely very closely. Ricky Fowler, not going to be on the team. It's I just I don't need you that it just shows the depth of what we're working with here. But quietly, somebody that's played some of the best golf in the world, it takes a long time to get all the way up in the official world golf rankings, especially when you're a special young player, just playing in your first few, you know, professional events, but a got the Sagan rankings, absolutely love. And you're just your favorite ball strikers, favorite ball striker, Colin Morakawa.
Starting point is 01:08:31 Love it, I was trying to lobby for a Ches Review pick there. But very interesting, I would say your riskiest pick, is that fair to say? I think it's the only one that is any kind of reach, I don't think it is a reach kind of based on what I just said. People don't realize how good he is. Of course, I consider Matt Wolfe, I just kind of want somebody that I think I can rely on a little more.
Starting point is 01:08:55 Matt Wolfe's good is really, really good. But more, Kawa, the, what really impressed me was his appearance on the new lineup podcast. I'm not sure if you've heard it yet. The confidence he kind of talks about in that, I don't even want to say it borders on arrogance, because it's not, but it's just like so reassuring. He's so sure of himself. And I don't think there's a situation for him
Starting point is 01:09:14 that's too big. I want him on this team. I think he's going to be on a lot of them. And I'm, is a great, great team for him to break in it. Home soil, a lot of veterans, let's go calling. You want him on that wall? You need him on that wall. He is gonna be on that wall.
Starting point is 01:09:27 Tron, please finish it off here. God, you know what, this is coming down in the water. Molenar is back on the team. Yeah, I looked at Chris Ventura as a total wild card and then I realized like he either wins or MCs. So we didn't want that. God, we're looking hard at Bernhard Langer. I just don't think he's quite as the distance. So we're going to leave him on the shelf.
Starting point is 01:09:53 It comes down to two guys that I feel really confident in both of them. Got to figure out which one. And it's between Victor Perez, 40th in the world obviously, needs no introduction. And Victor Dubieson. Oh, and Perez, for those of you ignorant Americans that aren't very familiar with him. I literally had lunch with them like three weeks ago. Don't look at me like that, is you? You're dinner actually. Really?
Starting point is 01:10:22 Yeah. Victor Perez? Yeah. That Perez. Yeah. That's your poll. I ran into him there and his agent said, hey, you want to come have dinner with us? Go, okay, sure. On the 2019 Dunhillings Championship. Each Chipotle guy.
Starting point is 01:10:34 Fourth at the WGCHSB Champions, which we don't have to say, you know, very short course here. T2 at the Turkish Airlines open in that playoff. Right. But how did he play in Saudi? Yeah, it leaves a little bit to be desired. T38 this year, and then last year at Saudi T13. So, you know, these are not great, yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:56 You also won the Foshon Open, which has come up a number of times. Yeah, exactly, which is cool. And then the trophy has on T2 and missed the cut. So, he hates seeing that, but very, very good, good young player in his own right, I believe he's 27 years old. On the flip side, we're looking at Duby's son. Duby's son is, uh, Is he busy here?
Starting point is 01:11:17 Yeah, I don't really know what's going on with Victor. We've reached out to him, we've not heard that. He kind of said he could cool take it or leave it. He hasn't played in the Ryder Cup in like six years. He hasn't really played much in six years. So we're going to go with Victor Perez. Okay. That's a good pick. Quite a build up there. I like it.
Starting point is 01:11:38 All right, so those are 24 players. Congratulations to each of you on a great team. I'd now kind of in the inverse of what we did earlier. I'd love for you to critique the other teams worst player if you could. Oh man, so we have the juice from here. Bob McIntyre, that was an interesting way to go leaving Stenson and Paul Casey on the shelf. Listen, I'm going to pass results don't necessarily dictate future. I don't disagree with that.
Starting point is 01:12:06 Um, just doesn't really have any past results that really impress me. So, uh, you dusted the scam chance. Yeah. You beat Cam chance, that. Uh, I do feel for my, my opponent, Tronnie is just not the same depth of, of players to choose from. So there was a good chance that somebody like Bob McAntyre was gonna be on the team. So, you know, I'm really not in the spirit of this competition, wanted to spare each other team member,
Starting point is 01:12:30 and other teams. All right, let's go to truck. Go ahead. I think it's interesting, Sally, it's always said the same thing about the European team before the 2018 Ryder Cup, said the same thing about the European team for many other Ryder Cup.
Starting point is 01:12:42 2016, how that works. We're asses. Yeah, I mean, I love my young guns. We're building for the future a little bit, but also relying upon, we've got some veteran leadership on the team. Now, just far as solid as team, yeah, I mean, you got Bubba up there.
Starting point is 01:12:55 You know, I'm gonna have Bill Nott, a science guy following that pod around, gonna spook Bubba a little bit, I think. And then, yeah, I think I'm gonna rely on my assistant captain to really get these guys heads. Wow, that's a level of game, gamesmanship I wasn. And then, yeah, I think I'm gonna rely on my assistant captain to really get these guys' heads. Wow, that's a level of game, gamesmanship I wasn't willing to go to, but my opponent will be coughing in back swings
Starting point is 01:13:12 then perhaps we'll explore a little bit more on the core setup from. Yeah, I mean, I'm not sure the cat pod gets through the first day without an injury. There, you know, it's gonna be cold. It's gonna be windy. Some bad backs in that pod. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:13:28 Not worried. You got Brooks and Bryson and Bubba in one pod with Phil. Like that's a... I feel like I've mentioned that the pod situation is very fluid. These are in parallel, it's wrong. And then you've got Webb and DJ. I don't know how they square their worldviews.
Starting point is 01:13:45 There are some competing worldviews. I have noticed, I don't know that Bubba's a huge science guy. I could be wrong on that. That's, that's, can you make sure? I don't, maybe I don't plan to put them out in ForSums. Interesting. Let them play their own ball. Sure, just don't talk to each other.
Starting point is 01:13:58 Bryson, I said this in 2018, if there's any player in the history of the world that needs to just be playing a song cough ball, it's Bryson. I'm not putting him out in force. All right, well, gentlemen, this was enlightening, invigorating, hopefully entertaining, and any closing remarks?
Starting point is 01:14:14 I look forward to the competition, I feel, somehow even better about it than I did a week ago, would like to congratulate my opponent on this ball or ass spread, and Jesus, I've never even seen before. But yeah, I look forward to it. Thank you so much for a very fair moderation. Do we think closing question, do we think the rider cup goes off without a hitch
Starting point is 01:14:31 on September 25th? Ask your boy Corgan. He seems to think it's already been postponed. No, I think it does. I think it does. I think they've printed up too much merch before it not to go off 2020. It's not a good 2020. That to 2020. Right, it got 2020.
Starting point is 01:14:46 That's interesting. Yeah, that's different than like the 149th open. Yeah. All right, well listen, as Bigger Aini says, you know, we don't know, but it'll be fun to find out what happens. We'll see. Thank you very much for tuning in to this draft
Starting point is 01:14:58 and I believe a shake of hands here. Well, we're not gonna shake officially, but an air shake of hands on this, a tremendous competition. Cheers! Let's get it right club. Be the right club today! That is better than most. How about him? That is better than most. Better than most.
