It's kind of like the back to the future where the photographs fading, and it's a race against it. That's kind of like what we're up against with Rory. I will say, it's very, very hot in here. You know, this, let me preface this by saying this is not a bit. This is not a bit. I think it sucks. 23 guys under par, lowest tied for the lowest cut ever in US open history. They're putting water on the greens. It just, they're spritzing. It's a good course. It could be, they put a lot of water on the greens.

My thing is, like, I think the setup's been wonderful, except for the, and even if they had to, I don't understand why they syringe today and didn't do it yesterday when I get, I, I know today was hotter. There was also more storms in the forecast. There was more humidity.

And I'm still pissed about all the water they dumped on the greens and, and the surrounds on Wednesday night. They had it exactly where they wanted it. They backed off of it and like it's going to be cool all weekend. It's going to be like mid mid mid mid to low 60s all weekend. So like what are we trying to get ahead of here? I wonder if it's the the thick rough around the greens. If you get things to firm, it might get a little silly in terms of bulge is hitting the green roll into the back and stopping the rough right like there it the way this course is set up with so

much thick rough around the greens if the green because the surrounds are not either not playing how they would like them to or they're short you know that the everything that's landing short is stopping in these that's the problem yeah is that like it's not just the greens that are soft. Some of the surrounds as well. I would, I would add this, Randy. I agree with you. You said it earlier. Haven't seen this many balls backing up in a US open. That's a, that's a little, that's a little, I still want to backspin.

I feel like the US open right now is being graded on a curve, but I do disagree with you on the leaderboard. There is a great ratio of Dogs versus little boys on this leaderboard like I'm going down this lift and I'm like man There are some absolute players up here and then yeah, you can throw me a Hayden Buckley throw them to the dogs Let's see does he get mauled does he come out? That's a great leaderboard to me like I I'm really into all the names Up here. There's just enough of man. I don't know anything about like a good example is like, I know who Patrick Rogers is. I've never seen him in a big moment. I'm excited to watch what he does tomorrow.

And he's got great lettuce on top of it all. Patrick Rogers stinks. I know, but I have never seen him like, let's see if he stinks tomorrow. Like that's intriguing to me. Two things, if I may. I gotta say Randy, because I've heard you say this before that you have admitted that your expectations

for this championship are unrealistic. And so I just want, I'm helping you out here to get this stated on the record that what you're looking for out of this is not, you're not looking necessarily looking for the most fair and most like, you know, the most demanding test. You're looking for borderline unfair. That's one thing too.

Second thing, this golf course isn't that hard. There's like six very getable holes on this golf course that are with two good shots or one really good shot. You are in great position for birdie, if not eagle. And like that is gonna add up to a lot of guys ending up under par. But I'll also push back on that a little bit as we've had wind both days,

This is firmer than wing foot was ton of a ton of undulation. Lot of blind shots that make guys uncomfortable. Lot of places to get in trouble in the bunkers like you can get. You can get in a bad spot in there.

There's a little bit more trouble out there. It feels like there's weirder spots to get into. My thing is it just it just feels like they're playing it a little bit more trouble out there. Like they're, they're, they're, you know, going to that side of the spectrum a little bit too much. I think they've done a great job overall. I just, the change from Wednesday to Thursday,

I'm hoping we see something overnight that's, you know, it really pops. Can I ask you this? Do you think it is all water on the greens? Like tea to green, do you like the set up? I think it's fantastic. I think they've done a fantastic job with that. They moved the tea up on six today.

I thought that was a good hole. The pins have been great. There's been a lot of variety there. I think tomorrow they'll, they'll, they'll amp it up with the pins on the par-fives on, either tomorrow or Sunday on 17. Like it's there's so many options. These greens, there's so much going on. There's so much variety. Like it's it's kind of hard to mess it up. Sure. And I think their their argument would be the only

way to mess it up is to make it too extreme. But I don't think we're even relatively close to making it to extreme. Sorry, that was a lot, Randy. No, I mean, Mara Kawa had his C game today in Chattas 66. I mean, like, what are we doing? I want guys, from Thursday morning, ball in the air, I want it to be a grueling test. Maybe Sunday will be difficult, but you can, I mean, Thursday and Friday, the US Open

is not what it used to be. And so, solid, your point when you're saying unrealistic, I think maybe it's unrealistic in today's climate, but it certainly wasn't 20, 30 years ago. I mean, this is what the US Open was, and they've been back down and they've gone away from it. Can you rattle off some years that are that are pro, that your favorite years, some of the best years?

O4 was, O4 at Shinaka. I was like respectfully and disagree, that was sick. Yeah, it's so sick. And I will say, I have not forgotten about that wing foot superintendent from a couple of years ago. That he still has a job and he's going you know, going about his day to day life. He should be ashamed of himself. He needs a quit and he needs to reconsider some things.

And I do want for the listeners sake to also be stating to the record, you guys were unhappy with that setup and there was one guy that broke par on that setup. So I just, I just want. I just thought that setup was boring. I'm just reading into the record. I just thought the course was boring.

Yeah, that was, it was. This is more interesting. This is, I'm so super pleased. This is my favorite venue I'm so super pleased. This is my favorite venue since Oakmont in what was that 2016? Yeah. Yeah. Like, this is unbelievable.

I had, I've had an awesome week so far and I'm excited to watch this weekend, aside from NBC, absolutely taking a job on it. It's, it's been a tough scene. We're going to say, of course, that for hamster, damn, but T.C., you were out there. I think we were kind of all mulling. We're sitting around here saying, like, it hasn't really felt like a major when Rory rolled the putty on 12 today. That felt like, you know, they had the replays and the roar and like it, that sounded like somebody making a run in a major. I got it, man. I don't really remember if it's supposed to feel that way on a Friday,

but I just have felt like it just felt very normal to this point and I don't like it. Yeah, I think it's probably a combination of things. There's less tickets up for grabs just because of logistical challenges that the course, there's just not as much spectating areas as you would normally have at some of these other courses. I think that, you know, the dual waves, like they're pretty well balanced. There's no center of gravity. Some of the coolest holes are out on the front

and you know, a lot of the buildouts are on the back, like 15 and 16. I think NBC has a lot to do with it. They're just like, they haven't gotten their audio levels, right? I haven't watched a whole lot of it. The stuff that I've watched, you know, jumping between the cock and USA and NBC.

There were plenty of roars out there yesterday afternoon. Try not to think. Also, if people are just expecting

a bunch of really, really obnoxious, like almost New York style fans, they kind of lump everybody in, in the Northeast to, you know, like, oh, there are a bunch of, you know, fans just like at Beth Page. Or, and it's not that, like, and maybe that's because the tickets are super expensive, and it's a bunch of private club golfers out there. But like, it's a very tough expensive ticket to get this week. But the golf fans that were out there are like on balance, very, very knowledgeable.

It kind of reminded me of like open championship fans or, you know, St. Louis Cardinals fans, great, you know, moving the runner over the best fans in baseball. Right, Randy? No, but like there was, there was a certain, I just had to throw out some, some chum there. I saw you tweet when you're, when you're complimenting them for, for applauding, like, tasteful layups and position leaves.

Like, no, there's a certain, there's a certain, you know, intellect there, I think with, with the level of golf fans out there. And I think, but I think the comp is 99 at Brookline, which was famous for the heckling and the jeers and the intense, intense atmosphere. I went back and looked at some of those highlights. And I think a takeaway I have from this is the access to the fans is not what it was for that Ryder Cup.

Like they're right on the, they were 17. There were fans left of that fairway when Justin Leonard made that putt and everybody went crazy. Like it was just way more intimate there and that was a takeaway I had from being on site is like man there's not like bowls or stadium seating very, you know, just not a golf course that's really designed for you know that many people to go see

but it's not intimate in tight. There's like couple spots where guys gotta walk through crowds and like it gets the energy going. Like that little corner on 15 into 16t and then down to 17 and then you know kind of up by like two green three teeth four green all that stuff like there's some stuff over there. I think part of it too is there's there's not a whole lot of Like they're all set back like you said and then also like it's it's kind of a whole lot of, like they're all set back, like you said. And then also, it's kind of tough to get there, right?

Like they're doing a great job with the shuttles and everything. A bunch of people are taking the tee, but like, I will get on them for like, probably leaving early today. Like there wasn't a whole lot of people out there at 6.37 o'clock tonight, which- It's also split on two sides and it's just tough.

Yeah, but, you know, and I feel like, you know, everybody was like, was up till midnight last night watching the Celtics game. Yeah. They all might be a little sleepy on the Fernandez too. You know, just out there and stands, you know, Randy, I know you're drinking one right now, aren't you? Oh my gosh. I was writing down the recipe as they were as they were talking about it. Love, love to know what the aristocracy is drinking. Well, what a better person to tell us than Jimmy Roberts. Exactly. I love my job.

But what was it? What was a positive takeaway for you, Sally? Dude, the cream rose today. I mean, see in Scotty, Shephler, get out there and shoot 67 today. John Rom shot 67 today. More a cava. Like it just, every time I look up, it seems like he's got 15 feet for birdie and it just looks like a vintage Colin Morakawa major championship performance, which. Randy's piss, he's sitting in a draw.

He's upset with this, your guy too, Randy. Why, why are you sliding your guy like that? No, I'm not. I'm just relaying what he's telling us. You know, y'all are lucky. He's only got a C game. He'd probably have 15 under. Yeah.

If he had his A game, he could hit a fade. Can't, he can't hit a fade with his iron. So it's probably easy. It, I don't know. It just looks like we're destined for, for, I, there's a, I'm with you, Ray. There's some names on this leaderboard that I do not expect to be around for very much longer as badly as I wish David Lindmer if it was going to be around longer. When he got to minus five almost got to minus six with a whole lot on number 10. I think Lindmer's

actually one of the ones that that I would anticipate sticking around a little bit more as major as us open record as we went over last night is very, very good. I think he will think he'll finish on the top 25. I'm hoping for a top 10 there for him. But don't don't interrupt you, but I do want to get to Mr. McDermott's question. Will TC apologize for Fleetwood. Yes, he will later in the show get to that. We'll get to that. Thank you for asking. So I don't know. Rory, we're going to talk Rory. We're going to have a guest in shortly that was out there following him for I assume the majority of the day today that we can talk to him about. I don't know. It's a big boy golf course. It is. And I 36 whole leaderboards, your eyeballs are going towards the guys that, as we talked about last night, that are going to survive the leaderboard gravity. And they're there. I mean, you know,

spieth kind of spit the bit, you know, it's just, I know it's unfortunate, but there's really not that many names that we expected to be up there that aren't. And so that has me excited going into this weekend. I think we can always talk ourselves into the first couple days. We get really hype for it. And like, you got to get through the field. Like, you got to get through the first couple days.

And it's a lot of coverage. And it's a lot of golf. And it can feel boring at times. When it gets out and run into tomorrow, it's going to feel like a major championship. So what did you like? I felt like Rory was on the golf course for twice as long as everyone else today. I was such a good taste. I was in it.

I mean, I don't want to use a... I followed Rory for 45 holes today. I felt that way, truly. And I felt like the best analogy that I can make for watching his full round was it felt like taking edibles a little bit. And when they hit on three, when he was like, any made double, it was like, oh dude, nah, man, I don't wanna do this.

And now I'm gonna be in it for like six to eight hours. And I'm just not feeling it. And then it just got a little better and a little better and a little better. And then by the end of it was like, man, that was actually, that was okay, you know, I made it, nothing bad happened, you know, I didn't freak out. Like it was, it was, it was,

I had plenty of food nearby. Yeah, exactly, no. I almost lost my mind on the third hole and then I didn't and it was great. But I felt it in like the pit in my stomach when he, you know, left two of those in the heather. I was like, oh my God, no man, don't do that. And he battled.

I saw something from him, Randy. I saw something from him today and I loved it. It made me feel something and that was about the only player out there that made me feel something. Because Morakawa and Ram, they played awesome. They hit awesome golf shots. I like both of them, but I didn't, I'm not, I'm, you know, I'm invested in this, this Rory stuff.

So that felt really fun to watch. I feel like if I could pick you off that, like when you watch more, Kalon, Rom, you're just kind of, you're in all of the talent. You're in all of some of the shots they pull off, but it doesn't make you feel something emotionally and for whatever reason, Rory is a different, a different, and I think that's, like, just context now of like, it's been what, seven, eight, nine years since he's been, you know, to the mountain with a major. So it makes you feel like, man, I really want to see you. Well, it's context on the good stuff, but it's also knowing that like there's so much variance

in his swing where at any point, like he can make that bad swing, like he made on, on what was it three to the right? Yeah. Gritty putt to make the double bogey man. Like that, that could have been quad very easily. It was a really good third attempt out of the head. I got Mitch Cumstine saying, Rory is pineapple express. I think that's a very, very good.

Mitch is killing it. That's the second or third. That's a great day. I just, I felt like I was like, oh my God, Rory, you're gonna do this now. And then he makes that putt and it's like, hell yeah, man. And he's just, I feel like he's fighting demons that I can relate to, whereas some of these other guys are,

like, oh, more of a call, I can't, I just can't hit a fade right now. You know, it's like, oh, that's cool man. I'm sorry, you can't hit the ball flight on demand, you know? Like, I feel like Roy's dealing with some other stuff. Like, he can't hit a wedge. You know, he can't not airmail a wedge. And he's, right now, he's not airmailing wedges.

It's all so hard. I don't wanna, like I said this last night, I'll say it again, I can't not air mail a wedge and he's right now, he's not air mail on wedges. It's all right. I don't want to, like, I said this last night, I'll say it again. I don't want to overstate like Warikaw was fade goes like two yards left to right. His draw goes like two yards right to the left, which is hitting a straight ball, which as Azinger said, that's like six feet. We're a long way from the finish. It's going to make Saturday, Sunday extremely compelling. I think, you know, I went on good friend of the show, Bob Sturms, Radio Show on Wednesday. And I said, you know, the one thing that Rory might be taking advantage of here and might be working in his favor is with all this live stuff. And, you know, he's obviously become one of the mouthpieces for the tour. He might have, you know, a little chip on his shoulder. It might be, he might be a little pissed off, which I think is genuinely good.

I know he's tried to convince himself of that through the years, rededicate himself to golf. But I think for the first time, he can legitimately have some frustration and some anger to channel towards his game. And whether that actually makes a difference or not, I don't know, but it's certainly different than all the other majors recently.

He struggled on the greens. Just felt it really did feel like this was gonna be a good golf course for him.

And it is, it is. It just that was that was the one that the only guy that I've been like kind of pulling for that I saw going going down the leaderboard today. The rest man, it's just like everyone kind of showed up. I was disappointed in Matt. Shane Lowry. I kind of had some, I thought this place would be a good fit for him.

He made some noise early on Thursday and then he's just been, you know, MIA since. So that was, that was kind of tough one for me. I'm a little bit surprised, didn't, didn't show up well. Corey Connors and Sungjae. He's kind of, yeah, approach fiends. Shane Lowry as well. That one was, did, did Cammy Young make the cut? He didn't. He missed by the end. God, that was an unbelievable finish from.

So I was going to say, you know, at this point, he missed a cut, but what a, you know, five under on the back nine. That's good stuff. He went quad, bogey, birdie, ace, birdie, birdie, par to finish. Yeah. He needed one more. The NPC was trying to get that cut line move to plus four, even though there was no hope of ever that ever

happening, but it didn't end up nothing. Nothing pisses you off more than one. One of the networks gets the cut line wrong. Well, they don't even really try. Like, they can do a simple good. It's on the homepage of data golf.com. They give you a model that tells you exactly what the cut's going to be, what the probability is that it's going to move. It's sitting at 99% that's going to be plus three and they're trying to probability is that it's gonna move. It's sitting at 99% that's gonna be plus three and they're trying to tell us that it's like they're gonna post for it. It's not accurate.

the best in the world that are certain, they're better than most of the rest of us, but man, it is really hard to play this game at this level all the time. I mean, some of these guys are leading right now, we're doing, you know, most of them actually had to qualify. I think at the time that my story went up, it was like 15 out of the top 20, all had to go through qualifiers. Most of them had to go through playoffs. These are like four, you know, at the course till nine night before four a.m. wake up. Some of them, you know, didn't get their clubs until the beginning of this week. It's they've they've definitely overcome a lot to be here and to be succeeding. And it's it's kind of cool to see. It's it's kind of what the US Open is supposed to be, right? It's it's

an open tournament. It's supposed to be if you can qualify you can do it and they the US Open guys like to say that just by being here you you've made the cut and it looks like at least this time that's true. Stephanie which of those names and as you learned about their story and how they even got to Brookline to play which of those guys most surprises you or maybe who was the most unlikely person in your opinion to kind of be near the top of the leaderboard? I mean, I feel like maybe it's too obvious an answer,

but Duffy has been sort of the most fun, I think. He wasn't even gonna come because he was focused on winning enough corn fairy events to get his tour card and he didn't want to skip a week. And so if he had not gotten his card a couple weeks ago, he wasn't even gonna try to qualify. So it was sort of a last minute decision. I like Joel Damon has sort of a similar thing. He wasn't gonna do it at all. And then like he was you know I'd drink or whatever the the night before he fought because he was like, if I cut, you know, Brendan Quinn had a good spare about this in the athletic. He was like, if I come, I'm just going to get my ass kicked. So what's the point? That doesn't sound fun.

But he finally decided, okay, I guess it's worth, I guess it's worth showing up, played the qualifier, played well enough to get here. And it's, it's wild, you know, if you can get here, you really, you can make a run. and it's wild, you know, if you can get here, you really can make a run. Tron asked us, I think it was Tron, just a little bit ago before you joined, who among kind of these lesser names or, you know, quote unquote, no names, do we think has staying power?

Is it gonna stick around this weekend? So to put you on the spot, who's your pick from what you've seen, from what you've written about? Who do you think is going to be around come Sunday afternoon? I haven't even filled that bag calling. I'm no names to be honest because Duffy even said earlier. He was like nobody knows who I am. You know, I'm just going to try to give the big guys a scare. I thought that was a really good attitude.

This is all at this point. It's all icing, so you might as well enjoy it. I think Damon has been really fun to watch. I think this course fits him better than maybe he thought when he was planning to get his ass kicked. It's not maybe playing as quite as long as he thought it would, and he's pretty precise and so he's had some success here. I think we could see him, stick around. What do you guys think?

Well, to your point, I walked a few holes with Joel earlier this week and he had said, you know, that the course didn't fit him well beforehand. And I, someone asked him, okay, do you feel any differently after playing nine holes? And he's like, ah, no, not really. I think the good thing, though, is it's going to play firmer and faster as Saturday and Sunday go along. It'll play even shorter than it is right now, right? So he should, he should see a little bit of a boost there.

And they are the ones that brought limited commercial interruption. And when they got the contract for 30 cents on the dollar, I was hoping that it would be the same commercial windows. But instead, when NBC picked it up, they've taken it and then just sold their normal commercial allotment on top of it. It was the same disgrace last year. I asked Mike Wannabe on the podcast last year. He didn't really have a great answer

for it. And in terms of basically sent the message of like your best championship is getting butchered on television and didn't seem like there was much of a reaction to it. So here we are. I might lay some of that at Mike's feet because, I mean, we're getting a lot of USGA, like you called it the nesting doll of promotion. Just. Yeah, the house ads are kind of brutal too. Like, some of them are good, but I'm seeing a lot of them.

And the thing that's really bugging me other than flipping from channel to channel, which is, I feel like every 15 minutes, I'm getting the Olympic music, the lead in. It's like, well, who is coming in? There's no hockey game going on, or college basketball game. They're reintroducing the coverage after every commercial break.

And so they're going from, I counted it. It was the Fernando segment, we may segment, Stimp meter segment, Boston Skyline segment, and then it cheers bar segment all within 60 minutes, or just over an hour. It's like, what? So we're breaking out into these two minute segments,

which some of them are pretty good, but then you're hitting me with the Olympic music. So it's like, it's just, it's grinding everything to a halt. So it's like, okay, now let's go back out to you. We haven't showed you Rory in two holes. Let's check in on Rory. It's like man,

just to clarify that the the song is the US Open Music, not the not the Olympic music. They have special music for it. Are you sure? Yeah. Cause I feel like it's Olympic theme is different. Yeah. It's just, they have bastardized it, man. I will say one more thing. I don't have any issue with the, like, analysts, like the coverage. What's not their fault? No, it's not. Azinger's been fine. Toreco's been great.

Like, I think the commentators have been solid. It's not even Tommy Roy's fault. Like, it's just so disjointed, jumping around, both me personally trying to find the channel and then them throwing me into these segments, like for no reason, they're just like, why are you dropping that in right now? And then yeah, we're starting from zero every 15 to 20 minutes.

I agree. Yeah, and then it's just the playing through and the booking.com ads and then Cadillac ads, which how does that even happen? Because it's a Lexus event with US, like they're just, they're just, and they're hitting us with like, I hate it when the NBA does this, but when they start hitting you with crossover Hollywood, when ABC starts hitting you with US, they're just, they're just, and they're hitting us with like, I hate it when the NBA does this,
