The rumours are true.
Saturday the 13th of September.
At King's Place.
Oh, that sounds like a date to me, Harriet.
Hello and welcome to Nobody Panic.
Hello.
Except this week, we're not going to be doing an episode of Nobody Panic
because it feels like, in light of what's going on in the world,
it's time for us to maybe have a listen and read and...
A step back so that we can spend our time listening to other voices.
We didn't feel that anybody needed to hear from us.
This week, in light of what's happening in America,
I'm sure everybody is following along,
but after the murder of a black man, George Floyd,
by a white police officer, there have been these protests about police brutality, and we thought
we would step back this week. And so we want to direct everybody to some places that if you're
feeling helpless or you want to get involved or you want to educate yourself, then these are some
places you can go. So the first thing is that you can donate to the Minnesota Freedom Fund
or any of the bail funds in America. America is one of the only countries that has cash bail,
and this is a fund that is bailing out protesters who are being arrested. That is the Minnesota
Freedom Fund. The next place you can go is the George Floyd Memorial.
fund, which is on GoFundMe.
And if you go to black lives matter.
Dot C-A-R-R-D.com, then you can see a whole list of other places that you can put your money.
You can donate to all 37 of the cash bail funds.
You can donate to place on the ground.
You can donate to the gas mask fund.
You can donate to all these different places that are supporting the protests and where
your money will be deeply appreciated.
And if you can't donate, there's still so many things you can do.
There are loads of great people to follow on social media who have been doing for years,
excellent work educating people on this exact thing. So do go and follow them and read and
absorb what they're saying, but please don't ask questions or comment or DM them because
they're already doing a lot of work already. And these aren't spaces for like white noise,
you know? So at rachel.orgle, at no white saviors, at Leila F. Sad, I might have
mispronounced that and I'm sorry if I have. At Killer Mike, at the Vitamin D project, at Monroe
Bergdorf at Body Possepander at Miriel C Harper and that's M-I-R-E-I-L-E-C-Harper.
And I found all of them so helpful.
And we've also found as well that a thing you can do is to try and diversify your life,
try and diversify your Instagram feed.
Is your Instagram just full of a bunch of white people will change that?
All the podcasts you're listening to try and change that as well.
So we've got a list of really great podcasts that if you listen to ours,
and you need to be listening to these as well.
And some of them tackle issues of race,
and some of them are just really fun.
So two good podcasts that aim to kind of educate about race by Renéedo Lodge
and in good company by Ottega O'Agba.
And Renéido Lodge is going to dip in and say that she's the lady who wrote
why I'm no longer talking to white people about race,
which is also a great book if you want to read some more about it.
And some fun ones, two queens in a pod,
the receipts, black girls live in, the sister collective and Laid Bear,
which is a sex podcast, which is eye-opening.
Just two more podcasts.
No Country for Young Women from Sardie Asma and Monty on Anuga,
which is on BBC Sounds,
and that's about living life in the UK if you're not a white man,
and Code Switch from Gene Bemby and Sheree Marisol Maragi.
Again, just talking about all these issues.
So we would love if you went and listened to some of those podcasts
and gave your amazing support you've given us and gave it to some of them.
So that's what we're going to be listening to and reading
and trying to understand this week,
and we will be back with Nobody Panic next week.
