Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, I'm Carriad. I'm Sarah. And we are the Weirdo's Book Club podcast. We are doing a very special live show as part of the London Podcast Festival. The date is Thursday, 11th of September. The date is 7pm and our special guest is the brilliant Alan Davies. Tickets from kingsplace. It's coming to London. True on Saturday the 13th of September. At the London Podcast Festival. The rumours are true. Saturday the 13th of September. At King's Place. Oh, that sounds like a date to me, Harriet. Hello and welcome to the podcast. I just had a mouth full of Tessa's noodles when she went to get to the toilet. I left the room. Stevie, get my noodles. Are your noodles finished? Yeah, that's why I'm yours.
Starting point is 00:00:46 I'm still hungry. You? You had like a little bit, though, like a little bit of Brock. No, get in there. No, I don't want them. They're yours. I actually bought them for Tesla as well, so this completely negates the kind gift. Guys, welcome to the podcast. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:00:59 You know what I'd like to do right now? Oh my God, what? I'd like to go on holiday, but in a stress-free environment. Oh, my God. I would literally love that. But like, the best holiday, but for the cheapest price. Oh my god, I would literally love like a totally stress-free holiday. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:10 That would be like so perfect. I know. And I have this voice as well, which kind of makes it feel like I wouldn't want a cheap holiday, but I really do. Sounds like I've got anything too much money. I do. I'm going to go on just the best holiday. Imagine having too much money. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Imagine it. Just imagine it. Just let's all just have a silence for a second. Okay, I'm done. So I normally ask you at this point, my adult thing. I'm just going to barrel straight in with mine. See, if you watch your everything week. You've got a bit more noon on your boop.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Oh, God. There's a heartily afternoon. and then put it on a boob. I just did an adult thing where I really want to dye my hair. Have my hair dyed blonde again because I had it blonde a couple of years ago and I wanted to go to the same place
Starting point is 00:01:50 which is a bit pricey but I think it's worth it because I don't want to ruin my hair and I went to the shop to on the way here to be like oh my God I've got time I'll go and do like the patch test that you have to do
Starting point is 00:02:02 and then like book the appointment very out of do the deposit it. Also have a chat with her and show us some photos so that when I... I always rock up and lie when they say they... Have you done that? I'm like, yes. It was with like Shannon. Don't pick the word, the name Shannon. Oh, I'm with Margaret. Oh my good, why are you picking these old names? I'm just like confidently saying... Ethel and Agnes.
Starting point is 00:02:23 No, Barbara. I mean, God! I just want a millennial name for me. That was I was hoping for, but I don't think it's going to happen. Come on. Chloe. Oh, that's all right. She saw producer Chloe. Said the word, Clary. So I just thought because when I go to the hairdresses, even when I, even if I did lie and say that I'd had done the patch test, they'd know because you have to fill in a form, but also, I panic and then go like, yes, anything.
Starting point is 00:02:45 And then I end up doing them doing things to my hair that I don't want them to do because I'm like, well, I don't want you to feel bad. If they go, what about this? I go, no, then you'll feel sad. They won't, but I still feel like that. So I got all of that done and out the way, like a week before. Turns out they don't have any appointments in the time that I can go, so I can't have it done until after I come back from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which is a shame because I wanted to be blonde for the fringe because I looked like a dead person. Why don't you go somewhere else?
Starting point is 00:03:09 The problem is that I genuinely don't want to go somewhere else because I don't dye my hair very often. And when I do, the only time I've ever gone blonde is at Bleach London. And my hair was such a lovely, lovely, it was so healthy afterwards. They did some stuff to it that was amazing. So I'm like, I'm going to be an adult.
Starting point is 00:03:27 I'm on the waiting list. I'm on the waiting list. Great. Well done. Thank you everybody. That's fantastic. Thank you. Very business.
Starting point is 00:03:33 And your business? How's your house? your business going. My business is all right. I had a colposcopy. Oh yes. You get a letter when you're sort of early 20s that says you have to come for your cervical smear now. It's not fun. It's fine though. It's also just fine. I prefer not to be doing this. I've had better afternoons. Absolutely. And so is the person doing it to you. Yeah, right? And you're like, but anyway, then you get a letter. This is my second cervical smear and then you get a letter. And then you get a letter, sometimes you get a letter being like, tick, you've smashed it.
Starting point is 00:04:08 Sometimes you get a letter saying, abnormal cells! Abnormal cells. Nobody panicked, but you have progressed to the second round. You are going to the judge's houses. It makes you panic as well. Unfortunately, the letter says in it, you've got these abnormal cells. This does not mean you have cancer. Then there's like a whole A4 letter and all you can see is the word cancer. Because it keeps telling you like, there are lots of other things other than cancer and you're like, yes, okay, but cancer is still an option here. So 99 times out of 100, it is absolutely fine.
Starting point is 00:04:34 You go in and also Stevie had written this amazing article. Who did you write it for? Refinery 29. It's really wonderful. I live blogged my colposcopy. She live blooded her colposcopy. She says, don't wear a crop top because you'll have to take your trousers off
Starting point is 00:04:46 and you'll feel like Winnie the Pooh. So I knew to come in a long t-shirt or a dress. Oh my God. And then she's, she made this. There's a TV screen which I didn't realize and there's literally a camera that goes up your cervix and you see it. But not up your cervix. No, so not it will hurt.
Starting point is 00:05:01 No, it literally just doesn't actually go. Up your vaj. Yeah, essentially. Up your front box. And it's very small, so it doesn't hurt. The copperscope doesn't hurt. It doesn't hurt. You see it on the screen.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Stevie made the good joke. Is there anything good on? Yes. A lot of buzz in the room. I tried it out. Not poor reception for me. Really? But I think I was panicked and I was, you know.
Starting point is 00:05:17 It was what I didn't sell it well for the crowd. Also, the camera turned on and then I just shouted, is that my vagina? I was like, and I literally screamed. I was like, because I'd never seen it. I've never seen it. No. From that angle. Not deep in.
Starting point is 00:05:31 And I've never seen it that close. You haven't put a GoPro on a penis. No, you never did. So you don't know. And like, you know, you don't see it sort of lit up in there. It doesn't get the light. I know. Anyway, I was, I remember staring at it and being like, this is extraordinary.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Yeah, it's like the film Alien, isn't it? Yeah, this is both like horrifying and fascinating. Then they put black dye in it and it looks like your cervix is like gone to the dark side. Yeah. It's terrifying. Anyway, so. Well done. Thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:05:54 But I wanted to share it just because it's so fine. And I was so worried about it for so long in the lead up and is like just totally fine. and you have a nice chat with the lady and like it's just fine. In the next few months I'm going to have an adult thing because I have to go in a year later to see if it's still there and they were like, because I had the abnormal cells. So I'm probably going to have to go and get it like a biopsy, which I heard does hurt, but I can report back and I'm going to live blog that as well.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Oh, sorry, I've had the biopsy. So you had it cut out? Yeah. Oh my God and it was fine. Yeah. Oh, this is the best episode of the podcast we've ever done. We were watching it. We were having a lot.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Then she said, don't watch this bit. And I didn't look, but I couldn't really feel anything different. And then she was like, that's done. You're totally done. You're done. Oh my God, this is so great. I just had the colposcopy. I didn't have the other thing. And so I've been the same that you just said.
Starting point is 00:06:47 I've been worried about it for months. No, so I've had the biopsy. Congratulations. Oh my God, you're now cell free. So now I will be two. Yay. Woo! What a great adult thing.
Starting point is 00:06:57 That's my favourite one you've ever had because it helped me personally. Great. Let's go on holidays to celebrate. Let's go on holiday to celebrate. Now, this is actually a suggestion from Ella Horn, who wrote to us because she's basically just been on quite a stressful holiday situation. And she said it too late for me as I've had all of this stress, but it was stressful enough that I wanted to pass it on to both of you in case you can help. So her questions are basically how to go on holiday. It's supposed to be relaxing, but like how do you decide on the destination, on the budget when you've got a group of friends?
Starting point is 00:07:26 Like how do you settle on something? Also, like, how do you get yourself ready? What do you need to take? How do you leave work for a week and not have everything set on fire? Which I think is a very good point. Yeah. I think settling on where to go and a budget is so hard because it's sort of like the moment when someone says, oh, should we split the bill?
Starting point is 00:07:44 But times by a thousand because if you're the poor one in your friendship group and everyone's like, oh, Mauritius. Like you're then facing this thing of like, well, I just can't go then. Yeah. Or I can't. Yeah. So I think I've never been the booker. Like I've never been taking any control really
Starting point is 00:08:03 To my shame as we all know Not at all assertive worry that I would make the wrong choice Did book flights though? Luke recently Yes I did Oh my god also something I did Which is totally irrelevant to this Because I was burned by not really paying attention to the instructions
Starting point is 00:08:19 From the last holiday I went on And by the time I got around to booking flights Because I'm a laxadaisical lady that does things at the last minute By the time I got around to him They were so expensive So this time, the first, and now I'm going out to the south of France for a couple of days to a friend's 30th, which is so lovely. In September. And I just, as soon as she suggested it, went and bought the flights.
Starting point is 00:08:46 They were 12 pounds. Well done. Now you just have to try not to tell everyone all day. So she'll be out there with her family for like the whole week. And then, but the do is on the Friday. I actually, because they were 12 pounds, and I did not know if I would be working or what I was doing that week,
Starting point is 00:09:02 I booked one on one day and one, the following day, because they were 12 pounds. And then I was like, then there's no pressure, there's no stress. I'll just, you know, cancel it and lose that 12 pounds. But I will just be like, that's okay, I'll go. If I can go earlier, I will, and if I can't, here's my second one. And I was like, yeah. We've talked about this, I think, in the past,
Starting point is 00:09:20 about like, if they're like five pounds difference in flight, whatever. Take the five pounds. One that is a more reasonable hour of, of the day. Don't arrive in London at 3am. London Heathrow in 3am because it was 5 pound cheap because you can't get home. No. Just get them at a reasonable time.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Arrived at the airport already like you know you're awake. You're not. It's not the middle of the night. Like flight comparison sites so you can find the cheapest one. But obviously some of those you have to look at the time because some of them like I remember once I was trying to book tickets to Vienna and I was like looking at all the price comparison things I was like this one's so cheap and it was like a 24 hour flight. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Be careful of the numbers. Be careful of the numbers. Be careful the numbers. But if you go on kayak. See if it circles around to Iceland for a day. Don't do it. Sky scanner is the easiest one I found. But also travel SOP, which is like travel and then SUP,
Starting point is 00:10:09 is if you're like, what's up? Has the biggest range, apparently. But also flights direct is really good too. So check those places. Sometimes once you've seen a deal, also go directly to the website separately and see if it's different there. And also a savvy tip is delete. your Google history.
Starting point is 00:10:28 So it knows that you are trying to book flights. And so it puts them up. So delete them. Awful that it does that. It's awful. It actually does do that. So just be aware that you just need, you know, ideally you're at your job and you take a moment and no one knows what you're doing at your desk.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Sure. You've got, you've locked out and you've got a desk facing the wall. Oh, I love that. I mean, the back to the wall. So no one can see. If not, just turn your computer out. Yeah. I'm in the corner now for no reason.
Starting point is 00:10:51 And you can just spend a bit, you know, really researching and being like, oh, I'm chuff with these. And I think if you're panicking that like, you know, people are going to suggest places that you can't go to, have some suggestions of your own. Yes. So come in with your own thing. Like, South of France is great. And it only takes like an hour and a half to get there. So that might be cool.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Base it on flight times rather than flight hours and hours of flight rather than basically anything else because that is a positive. And they'll also be more likely to be cheaper than people who are like suggesting all these fancy places. And you're like, great. But that is going to knock out like a day of fun. you know because we're going to be traveling and I think that's the thing it's like we're immediately in discussing this we're straight into the like uh WhatsApp thread crisis zone that listen to our um podcast episode how to cope with WhatsApp groups because you'll need that going into WhatsApp group holiday bookings yes so that is a you know a real nightmare and if you
Starting point is 00:11:45 are you're watching that and you're like oh my god they're going to book this Marisha's holiday it's just you just have to be bringing a lot of A game to the situation yes which is actually easier to bring an A game in a WhatsApp group and be assertive for over a screen situation than in a group. If you're all sat around and everyone's going, yeah, Maricious, yeah, you'd be like, no, I'm poor. But if you'll say like, hey guys, what about this place?
Starting point is 00:12:06 And so like, have a look yourself. Maybe somewhere a bit closer to home. Yeah, it's not enough just to be like, you can't just say no, basically, without a suggestion. Like, don't bring any critique to the party. Imagine it's someone, again, suggesting like where to go for drinks. If your friend was like, oh, should we go to all bar one? You're going to say all bar one.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Yes, because I always go there. You wouldn't go, no. you'd go maybe but there's always this place too come back with an example or another suggestion so i think you just have to accept this thing of it is quite a stressful just go into it like you know what this is quite stressful i'm bringing my abe i'm being as cheerful as possible like how nice to be going on a holiday at all like i'm trying my best here yeah and then or you can be you kill everyone or you can kill everyone or in general you can be a absolutely lovely you can just you just have to sort of if you have if you have not brought anything to the party if you've not suggested can't complain cannot complain
Starting point is 00:13:01 and no matter how expensive things are you just need to be like lovely lovely well done but people who booked this well because people have done loads of taking loads of admin and stress and done loads of things so for you to be like oh yeah yes and that also i think um crosses across even if it's not a money thing, even if you have contributed and whatever, don't complain about stuff on the holiday when like someone's at a bar and they're just complaining about the bar the whole time or like they're complaining
Starting point is 00:13:26 how long it takes to get served. And I know, so sometimes I do it and I'm like, why? It's just bringing the mood down. You're here now. You're here now. I remember going at school once somewhere. Great. Sorry, I'm absolutely on tenterhooks here at this story.
Starting point is 00:13:44 drawn me right in. I remember my friend Ellie Redburn won the prize for best value, best value for money. It was just a pointless thing to do. Like, you know, people, it was just like a nonsense like, who's been the best value?
Starting point is 00:13:59 And I remember, and it was, and Ellie had been absolutely banging value. I'd just been like, you know, they're being useful, helping, suggesting, not complaining. And I was like, it really made me be like, gosh, like always try and play for best value. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Obviously not in life, but I just mean in those bursts of like, we are literally here to entertain each other and ourselves. Yeah, let's just have the nicest time we possibly can. And you'll have a nice time if you do that. I think Ellie mentions about like accommodation as well, which if you're doing like a package holiday, of course, like you can get really great deals and things like that. But if it's a massive group, villas and Airbnb and definitely an Airbnb over a hotel
Starting point is 00:14:34 and that's your, you definitely want that. Which goes good for you. In which goes, absolutely, yes. Yeah, definitely get yourself in that Airbnb. don't change your money at the airport. That's what my dad always used to say to me. Constantly, go and find an ICE. And I was like, okay, and then I did do it.
Starting point is 00:14:52 And then actually the last two times I've been on holiday, I've changed at the airport because I've forgotten. And I've just heard my dad being like, oh, well, you're going to get a poor exchange, right? And you're like, I actually probably did. And I don't, because all of the numbers. He's very good at travelling. But like, the idea of like, I don't know what the numbers mean.
Starting point is 00:15:09 So if I don't look into it, it's fine. But I will have lost, like, an extra 20 quid or something. No, I don't think it's that much. You just want to have lost it. Like five pounds? Yeah, and you just have... That's a beer? Yeah, it is a beer.
Starting point is 00:15:21 But, you know, don't beat yourself up. It's basically... Holidaying is basically trying to find this line between being as prepared as you possibly can for these eventualities. And then if that hasn't gone according to plan, we're here now. Yeah, absolutely. So if we have to get money out like this, there's absolutely... Oh yeah, don't get angry if you have to get it out of the airport.
Starting point is 00:15:40 You just have to be like, oh, not to worry. And when you come back, if you have left over, you... euros or anything put if you have a passport cover or something that definitely travels with you put them inside that so then you just get to the airport you know oh i've got some leftover euros and even if it's only like 20 euros or something yeah you have at least a bit of money oh yeah to buy like food in the airport on the way back yeah and you're always like oh i've got nothing yeah so it just means that you sort of arrive even if you've forgotten to take money out whatever you've got a little bit uh i hear that monzo is incredible and various sort of traveling abroad
Starting point is 00:16:10 debit cards yeah net west is good yeah nat west is good and so look into your debit card and whether you can just use them broad and if I think as well like laying out being really clear about the stuff that you want early on is helpful so like for example some people might be thinking in like a big group like whoa great we're going to go like a massive piss up holiday some people will be wanting more of a relaxing holiday and then you're going to get clashes yes so I think if everyone is just very clear about the sort of holiday that they're after then you don't have that problem later on yes and just do you do your best of that and that is probably something that comes to experience like you might have like the best
Starting point is 00:16:44 friend but you definitely can't holiday together because you have like very different ideas what about a holiday is you might be in a couple and you can't really holiday together you know oh wow you like or like you know you I'm sure yeah maybe don't be in that couple yeah maybe can reconsider reconsider but like you know might have friends who are you're very good friends but want such different things and you're like yeah no not to we don't do this anymore so sometimes they just will be learning like fussy anxious people are very difficult on holiday because you just want to completely turn off like I'm very fussing see and anxious in certain situations, but a holiday, it's just like, I am lying here for the whole
Starting point is 00:17:18 day and doing nothing, and I'm not going to feel guilty that I haven't gone to see that ruin. Yeah. And I think that's a thing as well, like, when you're there in a group and people are like, well, we have to see the ruin. You're like, great, you go and see the ruin. So you try and find that line between, like, decide what sort of person you are. Are you someone who, like, wants to get there and, like, go and see the stuff? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:36 And if you are. Find a pal who wants to do. Who does it. And then when you present to the group, say, hey, me and Joan might go up the Empire State building. Me and Joe might go and see the ruins. Me and Joe might walk to the hill. Or even if he haven't even got a Joan, be like, hey, I'm going to walk up the hill this afternoon if anyone wants to come
Starting point is 00:17:51 and not, which makes people be like, oh yeah, I'll come up the hill. As opposed to guys, I really think we should walk up the hill. At 8am, we're walking up the hill because we absolutely have to do it because of the sunlight and we're going to lose the light. Yeah, and so it's the same thing. You're still presenting the hill as an option. But just
Starting point is 00:18:07 try and find that way around. It's like holiday you versus normal you. And just try like, try on a new holiday you for style. So if you do think you are somebody who like wants to go up the hill, try on the holiday you. And if you are somebody who is lay in the pool 24-7, try and go up a ruin. You try and say like, yeah, I'll come up the hill. You know, try and if somebody else, if you are not someone who naturally suggests anything, try and be on board with other people's suggestions.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Like, so just try and like work out what kind of holiday you are and just like up your game slightly for the other people. Absolutely. I remember we once went on this like disaster. We attempted this like extended family thing. one summer when I was maybe six or so and with like some cousins and like it was a real oh they got it was like very much pre-doodle days but somebody very serious sent around an email or maybe it came in the post now I think about it oh dear it came in the post an itinerary an itinerary but before the itinerary arrived you got this post letter to tick what style of
Starting point is 00:19:04 holiday you wanted that's not right and so one option was like you could choose between like ruckstick and luxury and one was like it would literally said like extreme rustic uh dig own latrine like cook own meals like anyway and my mom ticked like five star luxury want to do this like you know and then we ended up very much on the rustic experience in this like weird um very my mom was definitely you know not playing ball she was reacting against the itinerary she was like so curious that it's very easy to do that yeah yeah the top of the thing were definitely not playing to the masses and being like so there was just like constantly like we're going to do this now like military style.
Starting point is 00:19:43 I think that's what everyone did. Then we'd get there and my mum would like, you know, be like, I'm on this beach now and I'm not talking to anyone. And then, you know, one of the mothers would be like, I think we should set off now to go home to make a start on the dinner. I remember my mom, I mean, she doesn't swear, but like, she might as well have done of being like, absolutely not. We've driven all this way.
Starting point is 00:19:59 Like, of course I'm not going to turn around now and like make a start on dinner. Like, we're on holiday. Yeah. And so it's so, but like that is like with family and when you don't know where to find that line. And so like being able to, being able to, Being able to laugh is such an important thing. Oh my God, yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:14 And being able to, like, tease people and be open to laughter. And, like, for a situation, like, I've just been on this very fun holiday when the flights got cancelled from the lightning strike. Oh, yeah. And we're going to Italy. And I was like, it's a real testament to this gang that being very relaxed, being, like, you know, having known each other for a long time, but also really trying their hardest with holiday you, that no one is freaking out here in this airport that we literally can't travel. That's excellent. We're still laughing. People are suggesting we hire a minivan.
Starting point is 00:20:42 Like, the morale is still high. Yeah, keeping the morale high. And so if that, if you, like, take that on board,
Starting point is 00:20:48 be the morale person. Like, try your best to me. Especially if you're someone who feels a bit uncomfortable being like, oh, should we go to this particular
Starting point is 00:20:54 wine bar? Because what if it's crap? Yeah. Holidays even more pressure because you've only got a finite amount of days in there. So you're like, oh God,
Starting point is 00:21:00 every bar, especially the evening has to be perfect. Has to be perfect. But so if you feel a little bit under pressure, then yeah, take the role of like morale booster. like hype man it up like
Starting point is 00:21:09 either of these will be great like be that hype man if someone else is making a choice even if you think it's weird you get on board with that choice yes you're like great choice I can't remember if this is a quote or not and I don't think it is but it's something about a quote do remember when we were going to do grandmother Willow
Starting point is 00:21:23 in every single episode this would be my grandmother Willow unfortunately I'm now panicking because I don't know the quote but it's certainly like just commit absolutely commit make a choice nobody can make you feel a way you don't want to be made to feel like wow that's awful thank you grandmother yeah I'm sorry grandma I think she's drunk
Starting point is 00:21:44 you know what poker hand is nobody can make you feel she's too hard maybe like nobody wanted to feel like I'm a tree right okay so actually the quote is slightly different the actual quote is no one can make you feel inferior without your consent but I'm gonna it's really good but I'm gonna transpose this across everything
Starting point is 00:22:04 No one can make you feel anything without your consent. Yeah. So, of course, you'll initially feel it. But, like, you can choose to not be stressed, you know? Yeah. You can be like, I'm going to find everything a little bit funny. I'm going to just make the most of all of this. And I think that's what you have to, like, those, like, bad stressful things will be the things that you'll look back on and be like, oh, God, remember that.
Starting point is 00:22:23 It'll be a funny story. Oh, definitely. A great anecdote. An absolutely great anecdote. Even just the thought of you saying then, be the person who rocks up with some chocolate bars. I was like, yes, please. Everyone wants that. Everyone would, like, applaud that person who would, bring.
Starting point is 00:22:34 or everyone are, even if they didn't think they wanted chocolate, but I'd be like, lovely idea. Thank you for thinking of the group. Again, the morale is high. The morale is high. Just keep that morale high. Now, there's one aspect that we haven't covered really, which is like the idea of when you go away,
Starting point is 00:22:48 then coming back and all your work is still there and you've basically taken a week off work. And, you know, as two people who, I think it's like technically unemployed, but I'd say self-employed, we don't have that thing of like, you know, having to come back and then, you know, know, Japan called, like that doesn't happen to us.
Starting point is 00:23:07 But I often will get called in to fill in for people when they're on holiday. So I can sort of see it from the other perspective. And I can see how... That's very useful, actually. Yeah, I can see how the fire starts, essentially because there hasn't been a good enough handover. Yeah. So the idea is like, you know, let's just have a call before I go. I'll tell you some things.
Starting point is 00:23:30 And we'll do a handover. And the handover is always like, so there's like a thing. just pop up like this, some things, maybe try editing that, and then like, yeah, there'll be bits and bobs for you to do. You get there. Obviously, nobody knows what to do with you because you're not the person.
Starting point is 00:23:44 You do the stuff that they say, but you do it in like a day. And then the rest of the day, the rest everyone else is saying things like, can you just do that? And you're like, well, I'm not trained to do it. I wasn't told. And they're like, oh, this is a disaster.
Starting point is 00:23:56 You're like, oh, my God, I think I'm the person who's making this company burnt down. Yeah. But actually, all you need to do is if you're going away, you need to make sure that you get someone in and you really explain to them everything that they're going to be doing that week. You really cover your bases. You have like an out of office that has someone who's going to be in work who could deal with like urgent stuff. But don't try and work on holiday because you're just going to get really stressed.
Starting point is 00:24:18 The fact that we have email, the fact we have emails, they have phones and laptops. It's judgeful. Data roaming means that no matter, you're never, you've literally never switched off. Yeah. You don't, we don't do it. We're still on the beach with our phones, you know. We're still checking our emails. were totally bonkers.
Starting point is 00:24:34 I limit it to like two hours a day when I'm on holiday. And even then I get a bit sad doing that. Yeah. And so like you just want to do your absolute best, like put as many things in place to be like, I am leaving now. And for that hand over to just be the smoothest and like best it can possibly be. And to do it, even if that week leading up to the holiday is quite stressful, it will be stressful. You know, take a step back from that stress.
Starting point is 00:24:57 Be like, it's not the end of the world. It's not a disaster. Like, it's okay. Like take a step back from it. Don't freak out. Don't leave it to the last minute. Just like put those things in place to be like, I'm ready. I'm ready.
Starting point is 00:25:08 And also like, of course when you go away, there's going to be more work when you come back because people are not going to have known how to do stuff. Everyone knows that that's the case. It's not like everyone's like, what? Like, you've been on holiday. Like everyone knows that that's going to happen. Yeah, you might have to like do a bit more work when you get back.
Starting point is 00:25:23 But that's just like, that is just how it is. Yeah, don't ever beat yourself up about it if you get back in this stuff didn't happen that should have happened. Of course it would have happened. Of course it would have happened when you were there, but you weren't. And actually, if anything, giant compliment. Absolutely. The place crumbled.
Starting point is 00:25:37 I love it when I used to come back and people are like, oh, so glad you back. He'd be like, oh, yeah. Stop. Oh, it's in a mess, has it. What a shame. Oh, am I absolutely vital? I'm so vital right now. But yeah, I hope that helped.
Starting point is 00:25:50 Yeah. I mean, obviously, you know, I'm not Thomas Cook, but certainly I think, I feel like I could organise a holiday now. Yeah, I think the take-homes are like, be ready for it. be the holiday you just try your best morale decide what kind of holiday you are you are you are like you know yeah up your game book your flights early book your flights early if you are it's a summer holiday do not freak out about the clue haven't got enough clothes like oh yeah you're fine packing is a thing that we haven't talked about but I want to do a whole episode
Starting point is 00:26:22 called how to pack yes I think it's too much it's too much yeah we will do I want to like learn how to fold things I want to like know how to pack things into shoes oh my god I want to Maricondo has a lot to say about it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And also that really fantastic war correspondent we read about who packed her, was so good at packing, she travels all the time, and she packed her socks into the cafeteria and then set them on fire. I should say it's cafeteria.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Is it? Yes. I think we've had this discussion before. We have, but I just wanted, if people are listening. I feel I'd never say it, except when I tell this story. Yes, I think it's the last time I tell you. Yes. But she did.
Starting point is 00:26:55 And so you say it again? Cafitier. No, cafeteria. Cafeter. Yeah, we've been through this so many times. So we're going to do a whole episode about packing. Yes. And then the absolute last thing of how to holiday, take a book, get a good book.
Starting point is 00:27:09 Take a lovely book. Just getting a piece of absolute holiday trash. Yes, and also a hat because then the sun, when it reflects of the book, if you've got a brim, then you can read it properly, whereas sometimes the glare, the glare gets in a little bit. Absolutely. A hat book and there's nothing that you can't do. There's nothing yet. And then you can wait in the airport for hours.
Starting point is 00:27:28 A trashy one as well. like I'm, don't try and impress your friends with your war and peace business. Don't bring one, because you're not an idiot. Just take... Best trashy holiday that you've ever read. Yes, I know exactly what it is. It's Kat Marnell's book, How to Murder Your Life. It is not trashy, it's actually an incredible book, but it's so easy to read.
Starting point is 00:27:46 It's like a wonderful, wonderful, but I say it's the pinnacle holiday reads. Yeah, what you need is just like some kind of murder. I say murder and I mean page Turner. I just mean like, ooh! I like stuff about. like um I read um oh what's it called the one that was turned into a TV show with billy piper which is an escort crossroads that would have been funnier if i had not confused billy piper and brittany spears in that in that yeah but it was no it was funny because it was
Starting point is 00:28:16 very good um no i forgot on what it's called bell du jour bell de jour book yes um uh i read that on holiday and absolutely love a love a bit of an escort situation yeah love that i read um into the Water recently, which is the next book, totally unrelated, but next book from the girl that wrote Gone Girl. Oh, yes. And I didn't enjoy a gone girl at all. No. And truth be told, I didn't read it. Such a damn it. Imagine if I was a literary critic. I didn't read it. Absolutely damning. My housemate was so cross with it and she just performed the whole thing at me.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Right. It's an excellent book. I'll read it. No, no, no. If the twist is ruined, then the twist is ruined, so you can't read it. Yeah. You have to get the twist was ruined for me. I really enjoyed into the water it was just real like holiday trash like yum yum yum who did this crime I also loved a book called Gentleman in Moscow which sounds like it's going to be a sort of
Starting point is 00:29:09 Jeffrey Archer spy thing but it's like a beautiful and it is and it is a beautiful like beautifully written story just like the nicest story about Is it trash though? No it's not but I think it's page turn and it's like lovely holiday read that you're just maybe
Starting point is 00:29:25 one above trash One above trash But something that you just want to come back to be like Oh I can't wait to get back to my book you know yes oh that is true i did take two because what how sad would it be if you got yeah and then swap with people that you're on holiday with book swap so great if you're doing if you're doing i was just thinking about like how many if you are reading especially if you're sort of holiday alone which we haven't touched on here and is like a whole other podcast but like if you're
