Starting point is 00:03:48 Oh no. It's everyone excited for a little a Caridermus adventure? I haven't even made it through one of the adventure books without dying, so I gotta think that Sonic is not gonna be good for me. I'm half excited. I'm trepidacious.

Starting point is 00:04:04 I've never seen one of these books before, but it's reputation has caught up to me anyway. Yeah, well, before we begin, I should explain that this session is based on Metal City Mayhem, a Sonic adventure game book written by James Wallace. We played through it a few times on our old podcast, Ape It Book Club.

Starting point is 00:04:21 And now I have translated the adventure into five of the hopes that we can finally defeat it. So Onyx is going to meet Dancer? Yeah, at least, at least Gens is strong. The, it's true. Oh my god, the mechanics of these adventure books are insane. If you've ever listened to us play through it,

Starting point is 00:04:38 it's literally like, they set up a whole thing where you get rings and you have lives, but then also you can just get a game over forever. Right, you know what? I think you're right. I think this is our chance. This is our chance.

Starting point is 00:04:51 Yeah, right. Well, cause now Sonic doesn't have magic, but you have magic. So I think that might help. That's gonna say, Sonic can't fucking dimension door. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. But before we get to the adventure, we should introduce ourselves proper.

Now that we're all feeling ourselves, we're all in the hoglet-day spirit. I think it's time for us to get into it. As I explained you through now on your way to visit your old robot, Palke Keechain.

Starting point is 00:06:14 A few days ago, you received a text from him inviting you to a feast in Critter's Hollow, an animal village outside the gates of Metal City. And so you boarded what I imagine is some sort of jet blue, interdimensional jet blue fly. Yes, the two are caught at chips, just one, thank you. I will take over flying again. Please, I have no idea how to fly this thing.

Starting point is 00:06:38 You see the pilot is so scared because you're going through a wormhole. His pilots are terrible, but the planes are beautiful. Everyone's talking really loud. I have my noise canceling headphones on. The pilot is just screaming, I can feel the teeth in the back of my brain. Oh!

Starting point is 00:06:58 What? This is just a normal human who is not made for interdimensional travel. So like he's doing constitution checks and he is failing miserably. Onyx doesn't understand that. He looks at Nia and says, take care of him. He's ruining my brother's sugar ray experience. He's trying to be immersed in sound serve.

Starting point is 00:07:21 No! I'm existing in two places at once. So the pilot passes out from the stress. Onyx, of course, lands the plane beautifully. You touch down in an area known as the Green Hill Zone. Above you, palm trees sway as the gentle breeze. Russell's the grass on the titular hills for which the zone is named. And of course as the wind hits your noses you smell hints of chili dog and see a large dark plume

Starting point is 00:07:54 rising from the valley beyond. According to his message that location where you're seeing the smoke rising is where you're supposed to meet key chain for the great feast of crittermus. So you're on the ground, you're in the Green Hill Zone. Critter's hollow is just right over that hill. What would you like to do? There's smoke, is it smoke like fun barbecue or smoke like the town is on fire? I want you to give me your perception check.

Starting point is 00:08:23 I will also do this. Okay, great. That's a nine. Nine? Nyaq will take a gander. Okay. That is an 11. Nyaq got a 16. Great. So, Jins starts climbing the hill and is wearing high heels and trips. Wow. Onyx trips over Jins. And then both of them create kind of a like a humanoid tower for Nyak to scramble up so you can look over the hill. I protect myself from getting hurt during this with the

Starting point is 00:08:56 moonicorn baby swaddled. You brought nothing? Matt. Oh, oh wow. Thank God I'm not wearing shoes. I am babysitting. Oh, so obsidian's for obsidian. Obsidian's not here. Obsidian is on a date. Oh, a hogly day date.

Starting point is 00:09:18 It is crittered by us after all. So we're babysitting obsidian's. That's so nice. Great, so you have nothing. Obsidian's moon and horn baby with you in a Bjorn or maybe a Moby or maybe an Ergo. I don't know whichever carrier you desire. A Swadal.

Starting point is 00:10:28 you see Nyak crest the hill, and as you do Nyak, you are greeted by a nightmare. Below in the valley are the charred remnants of a great outdoor feast. Hot dog buns are scattered everywhere. In the center of the scene, a large fire consisting of tables, chairs, and the ceremonial, critter-miss cactus burns brightly. And nearby an overturned vat of chili, you see the charred remains of what looks like some sort of pig man. Oh my God.

Starting point is 00:11:05 Parker Harris. I was never gonna be able to eat anyway. I had a chip on the plane, but still, the beast is ruined. Oh my God. I guess I care a little bit. Let's go see what happened here. Did they just...

Starting point is 00:11:22 At the very least, you must come see Bacon Man. Yeah, I look at Jens and I'm like, What happened here? Starting point is 00:14:18 Jins, well Onyx is perfecting a bad costume. You okay, in shame I go invisible. Okay. You take a knee and you kind of like survey the surroundings. I imagine a niac is helping you with this investigation a little bit. And you see several pairs of uniform footprints as well as scrape marks from a variety of critter paws and claws. But you do notice that one pair of claws looks way more fabricated in nature.

Starting point is 00:14:50 They look more square and geometrical than the other sets of claws, but they are still scraping along the ground as if they're being dragged away. You try to follow the footprints to see where they go, but after a few feet, they all mysteriously vanish. Huh, okay. So there's some robot claws and some credit claws. Okay, can I look at the impressions of their feet to see if when they vanish,

Starting point is 00:15:18 it looks like they like pressed in further because they were like teleporting or they were picked up by something. Yeah, give me a insight or nature. Okay. There was a fight here. Yes. Good call. Okay, I have plus one to insight plus zero to nature. I'm going to go nature.

Starting point is 00:15:40 Yeah. 18. Okay. With an 18, yeah, you study the place where the prints disappear and you realize the prints are deeper there. It's almost as if like there was like a big push of force and then they like launched off. So maybe they took to the sky.

Starting point is 00:15:59 I guess some sort of like misty step or. Alright. I guess we look around in the air. Yes. Do we need to get back on this jet blue flight? I can't fly it. I only lost one wing. Okay, well, we only have a wing.

Starting point is 00:16:16 You see that the fire from critters hollow has spread to the jet blue and it is on fire now. Ah, yes, we should have landed so close to the fire. Okay, actually down to no means. Oh wow. Should we do something about the fire? It'll burn itself out, doesn't it? Yes, this seems all natural.

Starting point is 00:16:32 It's a controlled burn and an uncontrolled way, but that's ultimately good. So as you're arguing about how on fire your plane is. Did everyone get all of their personal effects out of the plane? Oh my god, Nia, oh my, my personal, I don't have a back. Did you lose the gloves?

Starting point is 00:16:52 The back, the back of gloves. Nia, dead sprint, a dead sprint back to the burning plane. They're in the overhead compartment. So maybe check them, check them. Chance checks his phone, that's N a heck, runs into the fire. No, I've shooted out a plane window and tried to dive through. Give me a, yeah, acrobatics or athletics to see if you can get out of this plane.

Starting point is 00:17:19 That's a 19. 19, yeah, okay. No, this is kind of where you excel. So you like dive in one window. You somehow with your thick head managed to break through like the super pressurized glass, you dodge roll into the plane, grab all of your personal effects, all of Jins's bags, and then you jump out a different window for some reason.

Starting point is 00:17:37 I'm the slide. Absolutely, I'm the slide. Absolutely the slide, you're right. Oh. Great, I have the bag. So you return to Jins and Onyx and nothing with the bags. And as you do, you hear a crackling... as the sound barrier is shattered.

Starting point is 00:17:55 And suddenly, standing in front of you is a blue hedgehog in bright red sneakers. The hedgehog looks at you with a mixture of anger and rage and points his gloved finger. Who are you? What are you doing here? Are you with Robotnik? Who the fuck is Robotnik?

Starting point is 00:18:15 Who said the fuck up? Why are you pointing at me? You little fucking piece of shit. I come out of invisibility looking like but I'm gonna disguise how dead man who is still calling me I slap him with a glove Up here as a dead bloody Nobody puts a glove finger at my brother

Starting point is 00:18:36 Why the hell are you wearing shoes? What? What? So much happens at once I'll be asking the questions around here Did you start this fire? Where does your get your gloves? You ask where did you get your gloves and of course you are wearing the dead visage of Sonic's friend, Parker Harris.

Starting point is 00:22:40 Oh, yeah, you see this really trips Sonic up. He thinks for a second and then says, I knew that Robotnik had the ability to create metal versions of critters, but now he can totally mimic a critter. He can create a lifelike cyborg organism that's still a robot on the inside. This is bad news gang, we gotta get in there.

Starting point is 00:23:00 The guy does sound awesome, I would love to meet this dude. I think it looks to Nia and Jen's with fear in her eyes that she can't stop lying. Either one seems that way, right? Jen's just looking at his phone. Niaq shrugs. When suddenly this army of badging bots appeared, they were merciless. They captured all my friends except for tales who managed to fly away. And if I wasn't distracted playing like Game Gear, I could have saved him. My white gloves are stained forever red. Yeah, now this is on you, my man. Damn.

Starting point is 00:25:28 You saw, I have that game gear. Yeah, give me your game gear. Can I take a whole world of this game gear? Sure, we don't care. Keep going. I'm not Aussie's football. He's doing reconnaissance. I've been running all over the zone to see if there's anyone left, but it seems like the badnik's got everyone. So tails hasn't come back yet and I started to get a little worried about him.

Starting point is 00:26:39 He's just a little guy. So we should probably go check on him. So if you're ready, follow me. Okay. Yeah, we saved your friend, Parkerer I think we can save tails too yeah one for one so yeah just it'll be done money as I first yeah so we got a game year and then if we could get our flights comped back because again this party not really much of a party I don't have any money but I do know a place we can maybe get some rings.

Okay, I land and then like go do my power up and then say, oh, I almost forgot to say your two tailed fox is fighting for his life. What? Starting point is 01:24:52 They do a wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it pursues the course of action you describe to the best of its ability for 24 hours is the duration. The suggested course of action can continue for the entire duration. If the suggested activity can be completed in a shorter time, this bell ends when the subject finishes what it was asked to do.
