The body of former President Jimmy Carter is lying in repose in Atlanta right now.
Marlon Hyde from member station WABE says members of the state legislature observed
a moment of silence when Carter arrived in the state Capitol on Saturday.
A crowd of Georgia lawmakers watched as the motorcade carrying the remains of former US President Jimmy Carter paused in front of the Georgia
State Capitol in Atlanta. Jack Carter, the eldest son of Jimmy and Rosalynn and
Jason Carter, their grandson, shook hands with political leaders as part of the
ceremony. Members of the state legislature gathered to pay their
respects including former Georgia State Representative Calvin Smyrie. Jimmy Carter
it was an awesome person.
A giant pine tree has fallen in the state of Georgia forest.
And for that, I'm humbled and a little emotional today.
Carter's remains will lie in repose at the Carter Center
for viewing until Tuesday before heading to Washington, DC.
For NPR News, I'm Marlon Hyde in Atlanta.
Road conditions in some parts of the Central US
are becoming dangerous at this hour as
a winter storm is bringing a mix of snow, ice and low temperatures to the region.
Forecasters say the weather will also reach the east coast in the coming days.
The storm is being brought by a polar vortex, which is carrying ultra-cold air to the south.
Stocks gained ground on Friday but still ended down for the week. As NPR Scott
Horsley reports, all of the major stock indexes fell by at least half a percent.
It was a short week on Wall Street with markets closed on Wednesday for the New
Year's holiday. Investors had lots to celebrate as 2024 came to an end with
double-digit annual market gains. The first week of 2025, however, was not so
rosy. Stock in U.S. steel fell on Friday after President Biden formally blocked the storied company's
sale to Japan's Nippon Steel.
A new report showed U.S. factories are still in a slump, although there are some signs
of improvement, with new orders and production activity both perking up.
For the week, the Dow slipped six-tenths of a percent.
The broader S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq both fell about half a percent.

Hundreds of people rallied outside Israel's Defense Ministry for their weekly protest against the war with Hamas on Saturday.
Earlier in the day, Hamas released a video showing one of the Israeli hostages still alive.
Former Defense Minister Yoav Golan, who was at the protest, says that's
another reason why Israel should push for a ceasefire.
I am fully aware of all the other goals and achievements in different areas of our security
campaign, but this is probably the most important one, getting them back home.
Golanat was fired in November by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A blast from an improvised explosive device killed one person and injured at least 35
others in southwestern Pakistan this weekend.
A group called the Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack, saying
it was targeted at a military convoy.
Police say eight of the wounded are in critical condition.

The Kansas City Chiefs left their home airport four hours late on Saturday after an ice storm covered that region and
suspended all flight operations there. A break from the ice finally allowed the team's plane to leave for Denver just before an expected blizzard reached
Kansas City. The Chiefs and the Broncos play Sunday afternoon.
