Starting point is 00:00:30 President-elect Donald Trump lost an attempt to delay his criminal sentencing in New York City today. As NPR's Amanda Bastille reports, the date is set for later this week. Judge Juan Marchand denied a request from Trump lawyer Todd Blanch to delay the sentencing in his hush money trial. In May, a jury found Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, and Mershon later confirmed Trump did not have presidential immunity in the case. Blanch argued in a filing on Sunday that the court should pause all proceedings while Trump's
Starting point is 00:00:59 legal team appeals the immunity decision. But Mershon said Trump's lawyers repeated past claims he had already rejected. Trump's sentencing is set for January 10th, just 10 days before he's sworn in to the Oval Office. Jimena Bustillo, NPR News, New York. Canada's Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced he's retiring after almost a decade in office. NPR's Jackie Northam says Trudeau faced mounting pressure to step down over his handling of Canada's economy and immigration. In his resignation speech, Trudeau spoke about his deep love of Canada, but acknowledged
Starting point is 00:01:34 a lack of support from voters and many members of his own Liberal Party. This is a far cry from 2015 when he was first elected Prime Minister and Trudeau mania swept through Canada. He had a progressive agenda including gender equity, more taxes on the wealthy and more action to protect the environment. But the honeymoon lasted only a few years. Inflation, housing shortages and immigration issues plagued Trudeau's agenda. His resignation comes as President-elect Donald Trump is threatening 25 percent tariffs
Starting point is 00:02:05 on Canadian goods. Trudeau will stay on as PM until the Liberal Party chooses a new leader in the next few months. Jackie Northam, NPR News. With winter weather hitting the east, the southern tip of New Jersey saw the state's largest snowfall totals with at least five inches of snow falling there. That's according to the National Weather Service. Kenneth Burns of Member Station WHYY reports other areas of the state still had to contend with slick roads and slushy sidewalks. There was still enough snow to shovel and make commutes treacherous in parts of central
Starting point is 00:02:37 New Jersey. Don Trower commuted to his job as a gas station attendant by e-bicycle. So yeah, it was a little tricky. Like I said, just trying to to stay on the bike and all that stuff and not slip and fall. Nick Albani, a middle school history teacher in southern New Jersey, was surprised at the amount of snow which prompted his district to close for the day. I was expecting less.

Though most roads in this part of the state are clear, officials are warning that roads could refreeze overnight as the temperatures fall. For NPR News, I'm Kenneth Burns in Hamilton, New Jersey. You're listening to NPR. Wigovia and Zep-Bound are the biggest names in obesity drugs right now, but they are not the only game in town. New research looks at a range of studies about them to draw some
Starting point is 00:03:34 big picture conclusions. More from NPR's Sydney Lupkin. Researchers at McGill University in Montreal conducted a review of 26 randomized controlled trials of 12 different obesity drugs. These included Wigovia and Zep-Bound as well as several new not yet approved drugs. The review published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found all the drugs worked, though their potency varied. Lead author Arisha Moyes says common side effects across the board tended to be nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. It occurred when they were escalating the dose of the drug and they were mild to moderate
Starting point is 00:04:09 and very few of these effects actually required treatment discontinuation by the patient and they seemed to diminish over time. There were no head-to-head studies of the drugs included in the review, which limited its findings. Sydney Lepkin, NPR News. In the St. Louis area, there was a brief APB out this past weekend for a small monkey wearing a pink tutu. But fortunately, before the worst of a major winter storm could hit the area, the monkey was brought to safety.
Starting point is 00:04:36 The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says the small monkey had been staying at a home when it managed to open a door and make a break for it. Photos on the Sheriff's Department's Facebook page show a deputy kneeling on the ground where the tutu clad monkey approaches and grabs his hands. Crude oil futures prices eased a bit involved with trading oil down 40 cents a barrel today to end the session at $73.56 a barrel in New York. I'm Jack Spear, NPR News in Washington.
