Starting point is 00:00:00 Donald Trump promised to change Washington, D.C., a place where there's an old saying that personnel is policy. That's why we have created a new podcast called Trump's Terms, where you can follow NPR's coverage of the incoming Trump administration, from his cabinet secretaries to political advisors and top military leaders, to understand who they are, what they believe, and how they'll govern. Listen to Trump's Term terms from NPR. Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Preparations are continuing in the Middle East
Starting point is 00:00:30 for the start of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Tomorrow we will start with these three objectives, that there will be no more fighting, that humanitarian aid will start to have a facilitated access to Gaza, and that the hostages will start to be released. That's UN Secretary Antonio Guterres. The ceasefire is scheduled to begin in less than three hours from now, and the first release
Starting point is 00:01:01 of hostages is expected soon after that. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, says Israel is treating the ceasefire as temporary and he says he retains the right to continue fighting if he deems it necessary. The popular social media site TikTok says it will go dark in the U.S. starting tomorrow unless it receives assurances that the law banning the app if its Chinese parent doesn't sell it won't be enforced. And Piers Windsor-Johnston has more on that story. Tick-tock says it will pull the plug on Sunday,
Starting point is 00:01:31 unless it's given more clarity from the Biden administration regarding the ban. The White House on Friday said it's leading the future of the app in the hands of the incoming Trump administration. Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond, says Trump has several options to keep the app running in the U.S. The best thing that Trump could do is to work with Congress and say, we're trying to have an effective solution.
Starting point is 00:02:00 We don't want to cut off 170 million U.S. users. The bipartisan law would force TikTok's Chinese-owned parent company, ByteDance, to divest its ownership or cease operating in the U.S. Windsor-Johnston, NPR News, Washington. Thousands of protesters took part in the People's March today. It took place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and occurred just two days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. It comes almost eight years after the Women's March,
Starting point is 00:02:31 where half a million people came together in Washington to protest Trump's first inauguration. NPR's Elana Moore has this report. More than a dozen left-leaning groups organize the People's March. But it comes at a time when some anti-Trump voters are feeling exhausted by politics. I am tired of fighting, but who's going to do it? Rachel Izzo attended the protest. She's a nurse who works in D.C. As frustrating as it is to have this happen again, I feel like we have to all come together for whatever cause we believe in that is going to be affected by this presidency and all have our voices heard and not stay quiet.
Starting point is 00:03:08 Despite a smaller crowd than eight years ago, organizers say they're focused on bringing new people into the movement and doing long-term organizing. Alaina Moore, NPR News, Washington. I'm Dale Willman and you're listening to NPR News. Pets from shelters in areas of Los Angeles County hit by the wildfires will now be getting a second chance in North Texas. Priscilla Rice of Member Station KERA has more. The nonprofit Wings of Rescue and the Humane Society of North Texas are transporting 150 pets to Fort Worth this weekend. Senior Director of Social Awareness for Wings of Rescue Cassie Davidson says clearing out space at shelters in LA will allow wildfire evacuees and their pets to be reunited.
Starting point is 00:03:55 And so to alleviate that, to ensure that no animals are euthanized to create kennel space, we are flying out as many pets as we can as quickly as we can. All of the pets arriving in North Texas will immediately go into foster homes. I'm Priscilla Rice in Dallas. More winter weather is moving into the US from Canada this weekend. Sub-zero wind chills are in the forecast for the Rockies and northern Plains states. While the Gulf Coast and the southeast could see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, which will start on Monday in Texas. The weather is expected to cause travel disruptions in areas not
Starting point is 00:04:28 used to dealing with such snow. Patrick Mahomes threw for 177 yards in a touchdown as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Houston Texans tonight 23 to 14. The Chiefs now advanced to the AFC Championship game for the seventh straight season. They'll play the winner of Sunday's game between the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens. It was an offensive battle tonight between the Washington Commanders and the Detroit Lions. Washington is leading late in the fourth quarter, 45 to 28.
Starting point is 00:05:00 I'm Dale Willman, NPR News. After the election, the economy feels like one big, huh? I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
