Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingly. President Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, says the president's deportation efforts are underway, focusing on those in the U.S. considered

a threat to national security or public safety. Homan also says migrants without legal status could also be arrested. NPR's Jasmine Garst says some people in immigrant communities are on edge, including Chicago. In Chicago's Little Village neighborhood in a restaurant on the main street, every time someone opens the door, a waitress named Caridad looks up in fear. She says she worries that it's immigration agents. Caridad doesn't want her last name used. She's in the U.S. without legal status. The potential raids have turned this

immigrant neighborhood into a ghost town. People stay home out of fear. Earlier this week, Mayor Brandon Johnson told NPR the city will stand by its sanctuary policies which prohibit Chicago police from enforcing immigration law. Jasmine Garst, NPR News, Chicago. President Trump is defending his decision to pardon the roughly 1,500 people involved in the January 6th attack at the U.S. Capitol four years ago. NPR's Franco Ordoñez reports. In a wide-ranging interview with Fox's Sean Hannity, President Trump explained his thinking behind those pardons. He also cited his own legal battles and complained about the unfairness of President Biden's

preemptive pardons of his family and allies. I went through four years of hell. I spent millions of dollars in legal fees and I won. But I did it the hard way. It's really hard to say that they shouldn't have to go through it all. So it is very hard to say that. Trump also criticized the Biden administration's response to hurricanes and repeated several misleading or false claims about foreign governments emptying their prisons into the U.S. Franco,

Ordonez, NPR News. Police in Tennessee are investigating why a 17 year old student at a high school in Nashville shot and killed a fellow student yesterday before taking his own life. Police say a 16 year old girl was killed by the gunfire in the cafeteria of Antioch High School. Another student was treated and released for a minor wound to the arm. Police are examining social media for possible clues on what led to the shooting. Adrienne Battle is the director of schools in Metro Nashville. Antioch High School will be closed for the rest of this week. We are arranging a location where students and staff can receive brief counseling and other supports.

Police say they still don't know if that shooting was targeted. Antioch High School has roughly 2,000 students in grades 9 through 12. This is NPR News from Washington. Crews in Southern California are working to contain a new wildfire. The Hughes fire broke out yesterday in the mountains north of Los Angeles. More than 50,000 people are under evacuation orders or warnings. It's already burned more than 10,000 acres. Later this morning, this year's Oscar nominations will be announced in Los Angeles. As NPR's Chloe Weiner reports, the recent Golden Globe honorees may provide clues to some of the front runners for Academy Award

nominations. LESLIE KENDRICK The Golden Globes aren't always a clear indicator of who might be nominated for Oscars, but they do give us a sense of what voters might be paying attention to. This year, Netflix's queer Spanish language musical, Emilia Perez, and A24's epic The Brutalist won top prizes at the Globes. The Academy has also announced shortlists in some of this year's categories, including nods for Gladiator II, Wicked, Alien Romulus, and Dune Part II for best visual effects and

sound. The Academy Awards ceremony itself is still on track for its original date, Sunday, March 2nd. Conan O'Brien is set to host. This year's presentations for best Original Song will move away from live performances and instead focus on songwriters. Chloe Weiner, NPR News, New York. Hotel workers in Las Vegas have voted unanimously to ratify a new five-year contract ending their more than two-month strike. The agreement covers about 700 employees who walked off

the job in November against Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The Culinary Workers Union says it was the first open-ended strike by Nevada's largest labor union in more than two decades. I'm Dave Mattingly in Washington.
