Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. Authorities in Arizona say a person has been detained for questioning and connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. Authorities believe the 84-year-old was taken by force when she went missing from her home outside Tucson, Arizona, more than a week ago. MPR's Emma Bowman has more. A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Department said Tuesday night that the quote subject was detained during a traffic stop south of Tucson. The news comes hours after investigators had their first big break in the case. Earlier Tuesday, the FBI released images retrieved from Guthrie's security camera, showing a masked person at her front door the morning she went missing.
Starting point is 00:00:44 It's unclear whether the person detained is the person who appears in that footage. Authorities have yet to name any suspects. It's also not clear whether Nancy Guthrie, the mother of today's show co-host Savannah Guthrie, is still alive. Emma Bowman, NPR News. To Canada now where at least 10 people are dead, 25 injured in a school shooting in Western Canada. Craig McCulloch reports of victims were found in separate locations. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they found the first victims inside the Tumblr Ridge Secondary School. One died en route to hospital and another two were found in a residence in the small town of 2,400 people in Northeastern British Columbia.
Starting point is 00:01:26 The shooter was found dead inside the school. CP Superintendent Ken Floyd says it might be hard to find any motive. I think we will struggle to determine the why, but we're going to try and do our best to determine what transpired that day and what led up to this tragic event. Floyd says the original alert issued in the early afternoon of a female shooter are correct. For NPR News, I'm Craig McCulloch in Vancouver. American skiing standout. Michaela Schifrin finished out of the medals again Tuesday, competing in the team
Starting point is 00:01:57 combined event at the Winter Olympics alongside partner Breezy Johnson. Shiffran finished her part of the race with the 15th fastest time, dropping the U.S. to fourth place. Here's NPR's Becky Sullivan. The expectations were really high for her, and then they got even higher still after her teammate, Breezy Johnson, skied the first leg, the downhill leg of the race. Johnson had another great race. She had the fastest time on the downhill leg. So essentially, Schiffran even kind of had a head start, but her slalom time was frankly slow. She was 15th out of the 18 skiers who finished that slalom run. And it adds to what is, you know, is hopefully really not a pattern for her,
Starting point is 00:02:34 but it is the seventh consecutive Olympic race in which Michaela Schifford did not meddle. That dates back to the 2022 games in Beijing, where she left empty-handed. She does still have two individual events left to come next week, including that individual slalom race. She says she's going to spend the next five days focused on watching that tape, focusing on training, trying to figure out what went wrong today and how to fix it. And you're listening to NPR News. Commerce Secretary Howard Lucknick is acknowledging that he met with Jeffrey Epstein twice
Starting point is 00:03:06 after Epstein's 2008 sex crimes conviction. Lucknick has previously said he cut ties with Epstein in 2005. Lucknick was questioned by Democrats during a hearing on Capitol Hill Tuesday. He's facing calls from several lawmakers to step down. At the Winter Olympics, even in the high mountains of the Italian Alps, the skiing and snowboarding runs relied largely on artificial snow. As climate change brings shorter and warmer winters, NPR's Ruth Sherlock, reports it's becoming increasingly difficult to find suitable locations to host winter games. The International Olympic Committee, the IOC, is reckoning with a stark truth.
Starting point is 00:03:46 The pool of countries that can host the Winter Olympics is shrinking dramatically. The IOC is, cites a recent study warning that because of climate change by the mid-century, only about ten countries may be able to host snow events. So the IOC is considering moving the event between a small permanent pool of climate-reliable hosts or spreading the events across a wide geographic area or even countries to find the best higher altitude snow spots. And they may move the games earlier, beginning in January, to avoid the snow melt that often happens by this point in the season. Ruth Sherlock, NPR News.
