said DHS remains committed to civil right protections,
but must streamline oversight
to remove roadblocks to enforcement.

Israeli artillery and airstrikes hit south Lebanon today after Israel said it had intercepted
rockets fired across the border from Lebanon.
This was the heaviest exchange of fire since Israel entered into a ceasefire with the Lebanese
militant group Hezbollah in November.
Hezbollah has denied it was responsible
for the attack. Heathrow Airport has announced it has reopened after a fire at a nearby electrical
substation yesterday that had closed Europe's busiest airport. Villain Marks reports from
London the first few flights arrived this morning. An airport spokesperson confirmed
Heathrow was quote, open and fully operational this morning while airlines raced to get
stranded passengers whose flights were diverted or cancelled through to their
final destinations. The airport added hundreds of additional staff to help
10,000 additional passengers travel through Heathrow from around the world.
But travellers are still being asked to check their flight status as several
routes early Saturday had already been cancelled. The shutdown had initially
prompted the counter-terrorism force at London's Metropolitan Police Force to conduct an investigation.
However, suspicious causes for the fire have been ruled out, leaving UK lawmakers and ministers
concerned about the resilience of Britain's critical infrastructure. For NPR News, I'm
Villamarks in London. And you're listening to NPR News in Washington. An investigation is underway into a mass shooting at a park in Las Cruces, New Mexico last night.
Officials say three people were killed and at least 15 people were wounded in the crossfire.
Police Chief Jeremy Storey says the shooting broke out during an altercation between two
opposing groups.
Kitty Dukakis has died at the age of 88.
Her son says she died peacefully overnight
with her family by her side.
She was the wife of former Massachusetts governor
and Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis.
During the 1988 campaign, Kitty Dukakis
shared her past problems with depression and addiction.
Friends say she knew that her voice could make a difference
on a range of issues. Disney's live-action show, Snow White, may be whistling
while she works, but she's got a lot of work ahead of her. NPR's Bob Mandela reports.
She's buoyant, determined and waiting for families to show up. And they are, if not
quite in the numbers, Disney hoped.
Including previews, Snow White made $15 million its opening day, which suggests it's headed
for about $45 million this weekend, roughly half what Princess Ariel took home in The
Little Mermaid two years ago.
Snow White has gotten pushback in some quarters for its casting of Latina actress Rachel Zegler
and for statements Zegler made to the press.
You know, I really don't remember you being this opinionated.
But Zegler's also earned raves for her performance and Disney's good at spinning wishes into gold.
Its most recent live-action musical Mufasa opened much lower but still topped 700 million
dollars worldwide. Bob Mandello, NPR News. And I'm Nora Rahm, NPR News in Washington.
