New York City mayors Aramabani is seeking to reassure the traveling public following Sunday night's crash at New York's LaGuardia Airport. As we continue to learn information, we will share it with you. And in the meantime, let us keep those who died in our thoughts and continue to hope for a quick recovery for those who were injured. The crash between an Air Canada jet and a fire truck that had been given the green light to cross a runway, killed two pilots.

The accident has revived concerns over air traffic control staffing, but NTSB chair Jennifer Homondy told reporters that were already a Monday that it's too soon to discuss that. Underwoods of federal immigration agents began turning up at major U.S. Airports Monday, President Trump ordered the deployment to help support TSA agents who are not getting paid because the Department of Homeland Security is largely shut down. NPR's Luke Garrett reports. White House borders are Tom Homan. is in charge of the operation. He tells CNN, ICE agents will likely guard airport entries and exits, and he thinks ICE will leave the security line to transportation security administration workers.
Starting point is 00:01:10 The union that represents TSA officers blasted the ICE deployment. Here's Union Policy Director, Jacqueline Simon. It will be easier for somebody with malintent to get through a security checkpoint with an untrained ICE agent there instead of a trained transportation security officer. Homan said ICE agents will continue their immigration enforcement mission while at airports. But in a statement, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said ICE agents will take orders from TSA, and the federal agents at Atlanta's airport are, quote, not intended to conduct immigration enforcement activities. Lebanese state media say Israel's military struck another bridge in southern Lebanon Monday. Israel has been targeting Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants to stop them from launching missiles into northern Israel. And Piers Keri Khan reports. Israel's military says targeting bridges is vital to stopping Hezbollah from transferring its weapons south. Dozens of missiles a day are fired into northern Israeli towns. Ongoing Israeli airstrikes have displaced more than 1.2 million people, according to Lebanese officials. Ali al-Hik is sheltering in a tent with his parents and four siblings in a Beirut stadium housing thousands.

The court heard arguments Monday in a case from Mississippi that could also affect voters in 13 other states and the District of Columbia. More forgiving deadlines from military and overseas votes in an additional 15 states could also be impacted a ruling expected by late June.
Starting point is 00:03:25 President Trump's celebrating. his administration's efforts to curb crime at an event today in Memphis, Tennessee. Last year, the Trump administration sent National Guard troops into several blue cities, including Memphis, typically something that would happen only at a governor's request. Here's impuretipa Chivirond. Some city residents joined members of the administration on stage in Memphis to laud the president for his efforts to cut crime rates. Trump himself declared crime in the city, quote, fixed. But for years prior to our involvement, Memphis had become known. for something else, being the murder capital of the USA, then not a good title. It was averaging
Starting point is 00:04:03 far more than one murder per day with a crime rate higher than Columbia, Mexico, City, or Baghdad in the year, I shouldn't be saying this. But here's the good news. It's been fixed. The city has seen a decline in violent crime. The issue will likely be a major focus for Republicans in the midterm elections. Deepa Shiverom, NPR News, the White House.
