It is another brutal day for U.S. markets. The Dow is down now more than 2,000 points. Major market indices falling 5% to 5.5% reaction to a U.S. trade war. On a day when the government released a strong jobs report, a gain of 228,000 jobs in the month of March, U.S. tariffs and
Starting point is 00:00:52 retaliatory actions by China and other economies are top of mind. But one group that is celebrating the new Trump tariffs is Gulf Coast Shrimpers. Stephen Basaha of the Gulf States Newsroom reports that Shrimpers have long complained that cheap imports have harmed their industry. About 80% of all seafood consumed in the United States is imported, and a big portion of that is foreign shrimp. Shrimp that U.S. fishers say is subsidized, driving down prices and driving them out of business. Bossard's Boats in Pascagoula, Mississippi has been in Leanne Bossard's family for generations. She believes that tariffs will give southern shrimpers an even playing field.
Starting point is 00:01:34 It makes us feel like we finally have somebody looking out for the little guy and we may be able to continue a heritage that we're very proud of and feed our country. India is the largest exporter of shrimp to the United States and now faces a 27 percent tariff. For NPR News, I'm Stephen Besahan, Birmingham, Alabama. Across the country, schools with high concentrations of students in historically underserved communities are re-evaluating whether their programs violate President Trump's anti-DEI orders. Starting point is 00:02:09 Trump's threat of pulling Title I funding poses a major dilemma for many educators. Chicago, for example, just unveiled a big initiative to try and improve academic performance among black students, because that is a student population that historically has been very poorly served in that school district. And there was almost immediately a challenge saying
Starting point is 00:02:30 this is illegal under our interpretation of Students for Fair Admissions. And so those are some of the types of programs that are up for debate. Melzer of the Nonprofit Chalk Beat speaking with NPR's Here and Now. President Trump has defended his orders against diversity, equity, and inclusion programs saying that DEI unfairly prioritizes race or gender over individual merit. President Trump announced on social media that he is extending the sale of TikTok to a US-based owner an additional 75 days. An agreement had been expected today ahead of a self-imposed deadline. The Chinese-owned video app is required to fund an American buyer, was required to do so by January 2025 under a 2024 law passed by Congress.
Starting point is 00:03:20 From Washington, this is NPR News. The U.S. now has more than 600 measles cases in 22 states. That, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, includes 481 cases in Texas alone. Here's NPR's Maria Godoy. Texas health officials on Friday said the state had confirmed 59 new measles cases in the last three days alone. Officials say 56 people have now been hospitalized with measles. That's up from 42 earlier this week.
Starting point is 00:03:51 The vast majority of cases in Texas are in kids and teens under 18 who were unvaccinated. Meanwhile, health officials in New Mexico reported the state now has a total of 54 measles cases. The CDC says there have been six measles outbreaks in the U.S. so far this year. The country has now reported more than double the number of measles cases this year, as it saw in all of 2024. Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases
Starting point is 00:04:19 known to mankind. Public health officials say the best defense is vaccination. Maria Godoy, NPR News. A SpaceX crew of four is back on Earth after spending nearly four days orbiting the planet's polar regions. Central Florida Public Media's Brendan Byrne with the details. The mission marks the first time humans have orbited over the Earth's north and south poles. The privately funded mission orbited the Earth about 55 times, passing over the poles every 46 minutes. The crew conducted around 22 experiments while in space, mainly focused on uncovering how space travel affects the human body. The crew's SpaceX Dragon
