After punching back against sweeping US tariffs with tariffs of its own, China is warning that it will continue to take measures to safeguard its
sovereignty, security, and development interests. MPR's John Ruich reports from Beijing.
In a statement outlining China's official position on the Trump administration's tariffs, the government said economic globalization is the only way forward,
and the US should stop using tariffs as a weapon. It was clear that China would not roll over in the face of what it called
Unilateralism protectionism and economic bullying. We don't make trouble, but we have no fear of trouble
The statement said Beijing has seized upon the Trump administration's protectionist policies to project itself as champion and protector of fair trade
The statement said China will continue to open its economy and liberalize trade and investment. President Trump announced a 34 percent tariff on all
Chinese imports last week, and Beijing matched it with an equal levy on U.S. goods. John
Ruch, NPR News, Beijing.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed President
Trump's new tariffs during a phone call this weekend, and in the Telegraph newspaper,
Starmor wrote that he will continue to seek a deal to include tariff exemptions, but that
he's prepared to use government intervention to shelter British businesses.
The death toll from severe storms in parts of the South and Midwest is rising.
At least 16 people have been killed following another round of pounding rain and flash flooding
with at least 10 in Tennessee.
In West Plains, Missouri, Mayor Mike Topliff got emotional after Friday's storm led to
the death of one person trapped in their vehicle by floodwaters.
It's tragic when something like this happens, but to see neighbor help a neighbor.
We have a strong community. It's time, you know, we put the little
petty things aside. We take care of the greater good right now. The region has
been hit by strong storms for days now, some spinning off toward Nato's and
there have been a series of flash flood emergencies from Texas to Ohio. In the
biggest show of opposition to President Trump's policy since he regained
the White House, hundreds of protest rallies were held across the country this weekend
in every state. Bruce Conviser reports from New York, which holds to one of the largest.
By the tens of thousands, they marched down Fifth Avenue from 42nd to 23rd Street. The
protesters chanted blue whistles and carried placards.
Lewis Flesson was among the protesters voicing anger with the president and his advisor billionaire Elon Musk.
The assaults on America, the assaults on public health, the assault on science, the assault on freedom,
just about everything. In keeping with the protests theme, many people carried signs calling for the Trump administration to keep its hands off of
social security,
reproductive rights, free speech, and democracy. For NPR News, I'm Bruce Convyser in New York.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the Trump administration is revoking all visas issued to
South Sudanese passport holders. Rubio issued a statement this weekend
citing South Sudan's failure to accept the return of its citizens who've been removed from the U.S.,
accusing South Sudan of taking advantage of the U.S. The move comes amid concern that South Sudan
could return to civil war. The matchup is set for tomorrow night's championship game in the NCAA men's basketball tournament after the Houston Cougars and
Florida Gators won their final four games last night. Greg Eklund has more from San Antonio.
Houston pulled off a dramatic come from behind finish to get past Duke 70 to 67.
Down by 14 points midway through the second half, the Cougars chipped away at the lead and
outscored Duke 9-0 in the final minute.
Joann Roberts hit a pair of free throws to give Houston the lead for good with 19 seconds
left.
Going up to the free throw line, I wasn't really nervous at all just because of the
work that I put in and just believing in it and trusting myself.
And I try not to get sidetracked by how big the stage is.
Houston will be in its first title game since 1984.
In the first semi-final game, Florida defeated Auburn, the overall number one seed in the tournament, 79-73.
For NPR News, I'm Greg Eklund.
The women's tournament will wrap up with the title game later this afternoon.
South Carolina seeking to make some history and to join just two other schools to claim a third national championship in four seasons.
One of those schools is UConn, South Carolina's opponent this afternoon.
