Despite announcements that the Trump administration is ready to talk tariffs, mixed messages continue
to roil global markets.
NPR's Mar Lyson reports.
According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, the president has directed his trade
team to create tailor-made deals for each country.
It's still not clear what Trump's goal is, to eliminate tradebalances in goods, but not services with every country in the world
Or to use the big tariffs to bring in what he says will be trillions of dollars of revenue
Levitt says 70 countries have reached out to the white house since trump announced the tariffs
The israeli prime minister has already been to the white house and next week the leaders of el salvador and italy will come
Financial markets all over the world have reacted negatively to Trump's tariffs, but
they've rebounded a bit when the White House messaging started focusing more on negotiating
deals.

The U.S. Supreme Court is pausing a lower court order that required the Trump administration
to reinstate some 16,000 fired probationary federal workers.
The justices say the nonprofit group
that challenged the firings did not have legal standing in the matter. The high court is still
considering the administration's argument that the lower court decision infringed upon
constitutional separation of powers. Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing for house action on a
Senate budget resolution, but lacks the votes needed to pass it.
As NPR's Barbara Sprunt reports, the intra-party dispute is a litmus test.
The Senate has passed a budget framework, a key step in unlocking much of President
Trump's agenda.
But to move forward, the House also has to pass it.
And members say they don't think it currently has the votes.
Deficit hawks like Texas Congressman Chip Roy say the Senate version doesn't include enough spending cuts alongside tax cuts.
The Senate budget does not reduce deficits. The Senate budget would increase deficits.
Speaker Johnson wants to get the final bill to Trump's desk by Memorial Day.
The president has previously helped whip support among holdouts for his priorities
and may be doing so again now. Barbara Sprunt and Peer News, the Capital.
The number of measles cases in West Texas has now surpassed 500. KUT's Olivia Aldridge
has details.
Texas' state health department also announced that ongoing transmission of measles had spread
to several new counties. Public health experts continue to say the best way to curb the outbreak
is to drive up the vaccination rate. Jennifer Nezzo is the director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University School of Public
Health.
That's the way to stop it.
This only ends with immunity.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited Texas over the weekend after a second child
died in the outbreak.
He said in a statement that vaccines are the most effective way to prevent the spread of measles after previously promoting unproven alternative treatments for the disease.

The Internal Revenue Service has reached a deal with the immigration authorities to share
tax information on migrants who do not have legal status.
Under the agreement, ICE officers may ask the IRS for information about an immigrant
who is facing criminal investigation or one who has final deportation orders.
And the Dominican Republic crews are combing through the rubble of a roof collapse.
Authorities say at least 79 people were killed and at least 160 others were injured.
The mishap occurred at a popular nightclub in Santo Domingo, with politicians, athletes,
and other prominent figures reportedly in attendance.
An old album returns to the top of the pop charts, thanks to a deluxe edition containing
some new songs. NPR PR Stephen Thompson has the story.
For the last two weeks, Playboy Cardi has topped the Billboard albums chart with a brand
new record called Music. But this week, it's been replaced by an album that topped the
chart more than a year ago.
We can't be friends
Ariana Grande recently reissued her 2024 album Eternal Sunshine with five new songs and an
extended version of another.
With six fresh tracks and fresh vinyl and CD editions for sale, the album leapt from
number 87 all the way back to number one.
The Wicked Star also landed all six of those new tracks in the Billboard Hot 100, with
Twilight Zone hitting the top 20.
