Starting point is 00:00:00 Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump says he won't apologize to Pope Leo, telling reporters Monday that he is not sorry for lashing out over Leo's opposition to the Iran war. You cannot have a nuclear Iran. Pope Leo would not be happy with the end result. You have hundreds of millions of people dead, and it's not going to happen.
Starting point is 00:00:21 So I can't. I think he's very weak on crime and other things. So I'm not. I mean, he went public. I'm just responding to Pope. Leo. Trump criticized the Pope Sunday night in both the social media post and to reporters after disembarking Air Force One. Leo responded that he does not fear the Trump administration. Also Monday, President Trump sought to explain away and now deleted social media post depicting him as a Jesus-like figure,
Starting point is 00:00:49 saying he thought it showed him as a doctor. A U.S. blockade of Iranian ports now in place as the Trump administration seeks to force Tehran to open the straight of Hormuz and accept a deal to end the the war after talks broke down over the weekend in Islamabad. A world away from the strait, farmers in New York's Hudson Valley being hampered by rising costs, Elias Guerrera, a member station WAMC in Albany, New York has more. About 7,000 miles from the southern coast of Iran, farmers north of New York City are in planting season, and feeling the pinch as roughly a third of the world's fertilizer travels through the strait of Hormuz. Amanda Powers from the New York Farm Bureau said fertilizer prices have skyrocketed since last year, from roughly $400 a ton to $580 a ton on average.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Meanwhile, Powers said diesel prices in New York have risen about $2 per gallon since last year. Power says all of this means people will have to pay more for groceries. If you have fewer crops being planted, it doesn't take rocket science to figure out that the prices are going to be higher in the grocery store. With nearly 3,000 dairy farms, New York is one of the nation's leading producers of milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese. For NPR News, I'm Elias Gera in Poughkeepsie. Trump administration has agreed to let a rainbow pride flag fly permanently at New York's Stonewall National Monument. Reporter Steve Kastenbaum was at the monument where people celebrated Monday's federal court settlement. A steady stream of people came by the Stonewall National Monument to snap a photo of the Pride.
Starting point is 00:02:25 flag. I have actually been dreaming of coming here for over 20 years, I guess, since about 2000. Rose Barter was visiting from Homer Glen, Illinois. It should have never come down. Matthew McMorrow advised one of the plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit that led to the settlement. We fought back and we won. And I think that's an important message to everyone who's under attack by this administration. The pride flag will remain a fixture here in Greenwich Village across from the bar where the gay rights movement began. You're listening to NPR News. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has secured a parliamentary majority. His Liberal Party won the majority Monday night following two special election victories. Carney has said that a win
Starting point is 00:03:12 would help him deal more effectively with the trade war started by President Trump. As it stands now, Carney's liberals control 173 seats and the 343 seat House of Commons. With the top overall pick in the WMBA draft, the Dallas Wings selected Yukon Star Guard, Hazy Fudd. The choice will reunite Fudd with another former Yukon star in the coming WMBA season in P.R.'s Becky Sullivan has more. The Wings had the top pick in the draft for the second year in a row, and again, they chose a star guard from the Yukon Huskies. Last year, that was Paige Becker's, now Aisy Fudd,
Starting point is 00:03:48 who became the seventh player all time from Yukon to be chosen first overall. The Minnesota Links picked second and chose Olivia Miles of TCU to play alongside their star Nefisa Collier in hopes of returning to the WNBA finals. Soon after, the three senior stars of UCLA who just led the Bruins to an NCAA national title were taken back to back to back. The Washington Mystics chose Center Lauren Betts, the Chicago Sky to guard Gabriela Hakez, and the Toronto Tempo picked Guard Kiki Rice. The tempo are one of two expansion teams joining the league this season along with the Portland Fire. Becky Sullivan, NPR News. Children's television visionary Sid Croft has died. He was 96.
Starting point is 00:04:28 His death was announced on Instagram by his friend of business partner, Kelly Killian. Sid Croft teamed with his brother Marty to create the 1960s children TV show, HR Puffin' Stuff. This is NPR.
