The Supreme Court has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from using the Alien Enemies Act to deport accused Venezuelan gang members from a detention facility in North Texas. The brief order came overnight after the American Civil Liberties Union filed an emergency appeal. MPR's Ron Elving. Ron Elving, MPR News in Washington.
Starting point is 00:00:22 The court ruled that the individuals in question in Texas were informed that they were being deported, but not given a chance to contest it. What's crucial here is that this time the Court has intervened before the fact, before the detainees in question had left the country, or as in the previous case, were in mid-flight or being loaded onto planes. That matters because those earlier men, 139 Venezuelans, are in that maximum prison in El Salvador today. Van Hollen spoke to reporters following his return to the US from El Salvador. He says, Abrego Garcia has been moved to a detention center with better conditions. The US and Iran have started a second round of indirect talks over Iran's nuclear program. Today's talks being held in Rome, mediated by the Omani foreign minister. And Piers Hadil Al-Shalchi reports.
Starting point is 00:01:23 The Iranian state news agency said that Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with the Italian Foreign Minister ahead of indirect talks with U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. The first round of talks were held last weekend in the Omani capital of Muscat, when Iran's foreign minister said the two sides discussed the lifting of American sanctions on the country and Iran's nuclear program. Trump said he wants a diplomatic solution with Iran, but has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of military strikes if a deal isn't agreed to. The meeting with top church diplomats, so not with Pope Francis, comes as tensions simmer over the Trump administration's immigration crackdown and cuts to aid programs. The Pope and other Vatican officials have sharply criticized the Trump administration's mass deportation plans and cuts to foreign aid. The Pope has called the American crackdown on migrants a, quote, disgrace and publicly rejected the theology Vance used to defend it. The vice president in Rome over Easter attended a family mass at St. Peter's on Friday. The Pope recovering from pneumonia is limiting

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the nation's deadliest act of domestic terrorism. Grayson Wheeler with member station KOSU reports on how Oklahoma City plans to commemorate the bombing that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995. People will gather across the street from where the Murrah Building once stood to hear remarks from community members and former President Bill Clinton. The crowd will observe 168 moments of silence, one for each person killed in the attack. OKC Mayor David Holt tells KWTV that he sees the anniversary on two levels.
Starting point is 00:03:34 One is to honor those who were killed, those who survived, and those changed forever, but also to share lessons of the event forward with people who maybe weren't even alive. And that's a growing number of people every day. Next weekend, thousands of runners will race in the OKC Memorial Marathon, which funds the OKC National Memorial Museum. For NPR News, I'm Grayson Wheeler in Oklahoma City. Federal authorities are expected to take over the investigation into last night's crash of a small airplane in Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:04:05 The Dodge County Sheriff's Office says three people were killed when the plane crashed into the Platte River south of Fremont and that the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will oversee the investigation. NASA's Lucy spacecraft is heading toward another close encounter with an asteroid. Tomorrow's expected flyby will be Lucy's second asteroid encounter since the spacecraft was launched in 2021, with the ultimate destination being the unexplored series of asteroids near Jupiter.
