Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Giles Snyder.
Police in Houston, Texas are investigating a shooting overnight that left one person
dead and more than a dozen others injured, several in critical condition.
Patricia Cantu is the assistant police chief in Houston.
This whole incident started as a party, a family party, a family gathering.
I believe some of the witnesses are saying
they had an uninvited guest. The uninvited guest was asked to leave. He left as he was
leaving. He began shooting in the area. There was return fire from the residents as well.
Cantu says police could hear gunfire as they were arriving at the scene and found multiple
people injured. She says several have been detained, but the police don't know if one says police could hear gunfire as they were arriving at the scene and found multiple people
injured.
She says several have been detained, but the police don't know if one of them is the suspect
who started the confrontation.
Federal aid to help people afford rent would take a big hit, and President Trump's new
budget proposal, MPR's Jennifer Ludden, reports that it comes as housing prices and homelessness are at
record highs.
The White House would slash rental aid by 40 percent and limit it to two years for able-bodied
adults.
Kim Johnson of the National Low Income Housing Coalition calls that devastating.
We would see homelessness escalate in a way that has been really unprecedented and unheard of.
Kevin Corinth of the conservative American Enterprise Institute does not think Congress
will go for such deep cuts on housing, but he sees a case for scaling back.
It makes sense to get people aid when they need it, but we don't necessarily want them
to stay on it forever.
Trump's budget would also shift homelessness spending away from permanent housing to more
emergency shelter.

To the UK now where British police say that five men have been arrested over a suspected
terrorist plot.
The investigation is in its early stages.
The BBC's Simon Jones has more.
The police have not named the site that was allegedly being targeted, but they say people
at the premises have been informed and they are being offered advice and support.
Four of the five men arrested are Iranian nationals.
They were held in West London, Swindon, Stockport and Rochdale.
The nationality of the fifth, who was detained in the Manchester area, is still being established.
As part of their investigation, officers are carrying out searches
at addresses in London, Swindon and Greater Manchester.
The BBC's Simon Jones reporting authorities say three other Iranian men
were arrested in London in a separate investigation.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejecting allowing US troops into Mexico
to help in the fight against drug trafficking.
Sheinbaum said this weekend that sovereignty is not for sale.
Her remarks follow a Wall Street Journal article that said President Trump pressured Shane Baum
to accept a bigger role for the U.S. military during a phone call last month.

At the Vatican, Canadian Cardinal Michael Cherney will be among the church leaders who will begin the process of electing a new pope following the death of Pope Francis.
This is not a political convention. We're not dealing and wheeling in order to create a consensus.
We're entering spiritually, prayerfully, having listened to one another as deeply as we can.
Yesterday, firefighters made adjustments to the chimney in the Sistine Chapel that will
send up white smoke to signal that a new pope has been chosen.
Meanwhile, the Vatican has declined to comment, but the New York State Catholic Conference
is accusing President Trump of mocking the faith.
The White House posted a picture on social media this weekend
showing President Trump dressed as a pope. It was generated by artificial intelligence.
At Churchill Down, sovereignty won the 151st Kentucky Derby this weekend. Justin Hicks,
with Louisville Public Media, has more on the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.
Justin Hicks, Louisville Public Media It was a misty and muddy derby,
following a day of constant rain showers,
but nearly 150,000 people showed up to watch as Sovereignty
and Jockey Junior Alvarado took home the top prize.
Sovereignty started the race at nine to one odds.
They win more than $3 million
of the $5 million prize purse.
It's trainer Bill Motts' second career derby win.
The morning Line favorite
journalism had a strong showing midway through the race, but fell behind in the final stretch
to come in second. It was followed by a biazza in third place. For NPR News, I'm Justin
Hicks.
And I'm Joel Snyder. This is NPR News.
