When Malcolm Gladwell presented NPR's Throughline podcast with a Peabody Award, he praised it
for its historical and moral clarity.
On Throughline, we take you back in time to the origins of what's in the news, like presidential
power, aging, and evangelicalism.
Time travel with us every week on the Throughline podcast from NPR.
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jack Spear.
The Indian military has struck several targets in Pakistan and parts of the disputed Kashmir
region.
As Villa Marks reports, the Indian Armed Forces called their strikes on nine sites of retaliation
for last month's attack, in which dozens of Indians were killed in Kashmir.
The Indian military said its operation focused on locations used to plan and direct what
it called terrorist attacks against India, but its strikes had not targeted Pakistani
military facilities and were, quote, focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature.
The two nuclear armed neighbours have long contested control of the Kashmir region, trading
fire over territory that has been disputed since India's post-colonial partition in 1947. India perceived an
attack last month by gunmen on a tourist-friendly destination in Kashmir to
be at the direction of Pakistani authorities and is calling these latest
missile strikes justice. Pakistani forces have fired back, the Prime Minister
saying quote, a forceful response is being given. For NPR News, I'm Villamarks.
President Donald Trump and new Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a mostly
conciliatory meeting at the White House today.
The pair showed some signs of backing off from their differences brought on by Trump's ongoing
global trade war.
However, Trump again brought up the contentious topic of making Canada the 51st US state
causing some consternation as we are
from NPR's deepest shiver off.
Carney for his part called Trump a quote, transformational president and said there was an opportunity
to work together.
But with this specific topic of the U.S. annexing Canada, he was very firm and direct that Canada
is not for sale and that becoming a U.S. state would never happen.
To which Trump responded, never say never, as by a reporter whether the U.S. state would never happen. To which Trump responded, never say never.
As by a reporter whether the U.S. would lift tariffs against Canada that are as high as 25 percent,
the president said no.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem testified before House lawmakers for the first time
since being confirmed at the start of the year.
Sen. Peris Amedebus Steele reports the hearing came as Congress is in the process of drafting a funding package that could provide billions of dollars more to the Department for Immigration
Enforcement.
Washington Republican Dan Newhouse asked Noem to provide an update on how she's protecting
workers who may be at risk from deportation.
Newhouse said he'd spoken with a cattle producer in his state who was worried about employees
in limbo after the Trump administration moved to terminate a parole program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans.
Noem didn't respond directly about the program.
President Trump has been very clear that he believes that people that are here illegally
need to go home.
There's an estimated 8 million workers without authorization in key sectors like agriculture
and manufacturing, according to the Pew Research Center, Jimena Bustillo, NPR News, Washington.
The US trade shortfall soared even higher last month as companies rushed to beat Trump
trade tariffs.
The huge expansion of the gap came as exports totaled about $278.5 billion in March.
Imports jumped to nearly $419 billion.

Lincoln Center Theatre announced today it will open its season in September with a revival
of the epic musical Ragtime.
It will be the first production of a new artistic director as we hear from reporter Jeff London.
Lier de Bessonet takes over as artistic director of the Lincoln Center Theatre with a restaging
of her production of Ragtime, which was a hit in a limited run
at New York City Center.
The show, which won several Tony Awards after it premiered in 1998, is an adaptation of
E.L.
Doctorow's audacious novel set in the early 20th century.
It tells the story of upper-middle-class white suburbanites, African Americans in Harlem,
and Jewish immigrants weaving fictional characters with real life figures.
DeBasinet has had two other city center revivals transferred to Broadway, Into the Woods, and
Once Upon a Mattress.

Americans may be a bit uneasy about the economy.
One thing they're apparently not ready to give up on just yet is having food brought to
their door. San Francisco-based DoorDash reporting record revenues for its
latest quarter. Company says total orders were up by 18% at 732 million.
Company also announced a pair of acquisition deals today. DoorDash has
reportedly made a 3.6 billion billion offer for London-based food delivery service
Deliveroo and the company says it's purchased seven rooms in a New York-based company that
makes hospitality management software for $1.2 billion.
Critical futures rose today, oil up nearly 3.5% to 59.09 a barrel in New York.
