In Washington, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has unveiled a sweeping plan to modernize US air traffic control,
Starting point is 00:01:20 including a revamped flight management system. Details from NPR Scott Newman. At a news conference with airline CEOs and the heads of the FAA and NTSB, Duffy cited January's deadly midair collision in D.C. and recent problems at Newark Airport as urgent reasons for action. He said President Trump is committed to solving the problem once and for all. He doesn't want to take this problem and pass it to the next administration, to the next secretary, to the next set of victims.
Starting point is 00:01:51 He didn't give a price tag but said with full funding from Congress, the overhaul could be done in three to four years. Scott Newman, NPR News, Washington. President Trump has fired Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden, according to an email obtained by the Associated Press and NPR. Hayden's 10-year term in the Post was set to expire next year. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffrey says Hayden is accomplished, principled, and distinguished, and calls her dismissal the latest effort to ban books. Organizations providing HIV AIDS outreach and care in the
Starting point is 00:02:25 Deep South are feeling the shock of funding cuts to health agencies. From our partner KFF Health News, Amy Maxman has more. Half of the country's new HIV cases each year occur in the South. To combat the epidemic, the federal government funds groups that offer testing and support, like food assistance, to communities at risk of the disease. But as HIV prevention funds are cut and delayed, these organizations are scaling back their work. Daphina Ward is the executive director of the Southern AIDS Coalition. Prevention. We're seeing this about phase of what it means to truly work towards ending HIV in this country.
Starting point is 00:03:05 If the cuts stick, Ward says many people won't learn they're infected, won't be treated, and may spread HIV to others. U.S. futures are flat in after-hours trading on Wall Street. This is NPR. A detained University of Alabama student has decided to self-deport to his native country, Iran. His attorney says Alireza Deruti is no longer facing the charge that precipitated his arrest, but did not want to spend any more time in jail fighting his deportation on a second
Starting point is 00:03:38 charge. Deruti's visa was revoked in June 2023, but the reason is unclear. She said it was during that trip that Weinstein sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan apartment. When she resisted, he told her she needed to work on her stubbornness. She said Weinstein assaulted her a second time, almost four years later, in a hotel room, saying afterwards, you see, that wasn't so difficult.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Sokola was not a witness at Weinstein's 2020 New York trial. His conviction was overturned by an appeals court on procedural grounds last year.
